Tips for monthly salvage kit usage

I’m looking for the most cost effective way to purchase and salvage around 200 items, taking into account the cost of the items, the mats returned, and the cost of the salvage kits. I’d normally just purchase the cheapest possible weapons and salvage with white kits, but I’m wondering whether there’s a better way if you take the salvage returns into account. Any tips?

I don’t think it makes a huge difference, just because to get the most out of SB you have to circle strafe at short-mid range. If you were standing at 1200 with a SB you were doing it wrong anyway.

Sword/Axe is already a great combo. PoS crits like a truck and Sword provides tons of mobility and makes you almost impossible to escape from—which the new pull will only make worse for your enemies.

Though I’m also looking forward to the new longbow—if these “leaked” notes are real, that is.

Think about it, this is what we’ve been asking for right? More damage on the Ranger, less on the pet? The best thing I ever did playing this class was stop trying to use the pet as anything other than a walking buff provider. Once we adapt to these new changes, I think we’re going to be a lot more dangerous.. well, maybe. We’ll see what how much Torment screws us.

Biggest thing to watch for is that PoS’s return hit is somewhat unreliable… gets obstructed quite a bit, and I bet they haven’t fixed -that-

What’s there to look forward to on the longbow? It’ll miss slightly less due to the increased projectile speed but that’s it. The longer cripple on barrage is pretty much useless, the issue with that skill is people dodging out and not getting hit at all. Anyone running a power longbow build will only be hurt by this patch due to the loss of Zephyr’s Speed, assuming these patch notes turn out to be legit.

The reduced aftercast on the long range shot means that instead firing 1 arrow every 1.25s, you fire 1 arrow per second.

Are we sure about that? I’ve never seen ‘aftercast’ mentioned before so I don’t know for sure whether aftercast reduction does in fact translate to increased attack rate. In any case, if these leaked notes are true, aftercast is pretty much getting reduced across the board. Just look at Warriors and Eles.

Yes I’m certain. There was a dev explaining aftercast on the forums a few months back, but I’m not in the mood to go forum hunting to find it. But every skill in the game has some sort of aftercast (delay in which after using the skill, another action can’t be performed).

Currently, the longbow autoattack has a .75s channel and kitten aftercast, which results in 1.25s (the longbow shoots an auto attack every 1.25s).

By reducing the aftercast, it effectively means that after one shot is fired, you’ll now be able to fire another shot sooner, .25s sooner is the leaked notes are accurate.

Which results in the 1s fire time that I mentioned.

Ok I missed that clarification of aftercast, thanks. So having no cooldown, LB1 should see a 25% damage increase? I.e. 5 shots every 5 secs vs 4 shots every 5 secs? Nice, you still have to consider the reduced aftercast for other profession skills but that’s a pretty hefty boost for LB autoattack dps.

No, Quickness affects SB and LB the same in terms of DPS.

Wrong. Quickness has been bugged for SB for a long time. Attack speed is increased by 31% instead of 50% for Crossfire. When Quickness was still at 100%, SB had an increased attack speed of 62%. This may be due to the same graphic glitch that caused the SB Crossfire attack speed nerf in October. Because Rangers get nerfed for graphical reasons.

I will have to look into this.

Yeah it’s a well known fact that shortbow quickness is bugged, it was bugged before the quickness nerf and remained bugged after the nerf. But regardless, quickness affects Lb more than Sb because Lb deals spike damage off barrage and rapid fire, whereas Sb deals more consistent damage off autoattack. The higher the spike, the greater the impact of damage buffs like quickness and fury.

Next Patch Changes (my predictions)

Rangers definitely will see changes, Arenanet has explicitly stated that this is the largest balance patch to date and all professions are receiving tweaks. It isn’t hard to imagine nerfs to BM builds, people have been complaining about BM rangers for a while now.

Every single profession trait line is seeing changes and we’ve also made updates to some less popular skills to improve their effectiveness.”

Meh, I think they should instead transform the whole losing team into Moa for the rest of the round and prevent them from respawning at all. And reduce their movement speed by 50% too

Heh, I actually like the idea of the losers being turned into Moas. Or maybe you could have an optional moa transformation button at the end of the match, if you hit it you become invulnerable and unable to attack.

Whether end-game invulnerability is a good idea or not depends on what the majority of players would prefer, but I do think it would be a lot better for the PvP community if you had a chance to stop and exchange a few quick comments with your teammates. Obviously this is much more important in pug play, I don’t think it’s really necessary for pre-mades. I’ve never really felt compelled to say more than ‘gg’ to my opponents, but I often wish I had more time to chat with my team.

Best gear and build for farming solo?

Go full berserker if you want to farm PvE or CoF, it’s the fastest way to kill mobs. You have no need for survivability in that context, it just slows you down. I’d suggest 30/30/5/0/5 (with moment of clarity) or 30/25/10/0/5 (with wilderness knowledge).

Yeah YOU can type, but no one ever answers because they’re too busy protecting themselves. It’s kind of sad really, there’s no sense of community in PUG pvp, you don’t even have time to say thanks and goodbye before you get whisked out to the lobby and lose your team.

I imagine this has been brought up in the past, but personally I would really really prefer it all players became invulnerable as soon as the match ends. I’d like to be able to exchange goodbyes, congratulations, comments, etc., but it’s impossible when everyone is fending for their lives until they exit to the lobby.

I’m pretty sure they’ll release an unlimited logging axe, and I will indeed buy it when it becomes available. However, I’m hoping there will be a fourth tool available as well; I’d like to see an unlimited salvage kit, too. Hell, since it can be used to get multiple kinds of materials, I’d be willing to pay extra for it (extra compared to the pick and sickle so far, that is.)

I personally can’t see an unlimited salvage kit ever happening.

  • There’s not really any fancy animation to show while salvaging.
  • It’s much less annoying to run out of salvage kits in the field because you can salvage items at your convenience.
  • There would be significant implications for the economy. Even an infinite use crude salvage kit might have economic implications.

This. I think a lot of people (such as myself) would jump at the chance of buying an unbreakable black lion salvaging kit, or even a master salvaging kit, and don’t care about the animations of the tools, but I also wonder what the effect on the economy would be. But to be honest, I would love even an unlimited crude salvaging kit for whites.

solution to a broken market

One point: Plenty of money is introduced in to the economy through quests and vendoring items. The economy is so stifled by trade taxes and costs on every thing though that vendoring items is actually more profitable then taxed trade on many items.

This causes an issue because low and medium income people are constantly pinched.

I have to admit that this is something WoW did right. They were able to make a fun economy. What they did is have a similar way money was introduced in to the economy— through quests and vendoring stuff, so players on all levels could have some sort of income.

However, their expenses for the normal player are low enough people aren’t pinched, and they feel like through working they can save up money for bigger things.

What they did instead was to have very big vendor purchases, so at medium income levels, you’re making more than you need to spend easily, but when you have a lot of money, there’s a very desirable thing to remove a big portion of it for. Unlike in real life where this is recirculated, this money is removed completely.

Unlike GW2 where money is sucked out at all levels, in WoW money is mostly sucked out of the economy at the top, where people spend half their income and still have hundreds of thousands of gold to easily do whatever they want. Their economic policy makes a strong and healthy middle class, and for the majority of the players, this is where they fall, so the game is more fun.

The difference is that you don’t actually need gold in GW2. You can get all the top tier armor and weapons from dungeons or karma vendors, and you get ascended gear through fractal runs, guild missions, and laurels. So really the only purpose you have for your gold is buying pretty things, and pretty things are far less interesting when everybody has them.

Sword really most DPS?

You should consider the 1h sword as a weapon set rather than just the sword it self. with a condition build you can go with torch and for Power you can go axe. If you need more stability you can go dagger. This stuff is pretty old and while I agree that at time we need to challege widely held beliefs this isnt one of them for it has been well tested and documented one just needs to look.

More than Axe, with a power build you’d go warhorn, buffing your damage with might and fury. But yes you’re absolutely right, you have to take the offhands into account when comparing Sword and Shortbow.

Also, note that quickness only grants a 33% attack speed boost to the shortbow, as opposed to 50% to sword and all other weapons. It might seem like a minor point, but many ranger builds make heavy use of quickness to boost their damage output.

WTF?? I just came across this note on the gw2 wiki page for Call of the Wild (the warhorn buff)…

I have never seen or heard of this, but it’s a pretty awesome add by Arenanet. Apparently it doesn’t fight, it just rocks. Has anyone here summoned the Lunar Wolf before? I imagine it might happen fairly frequently in WvW, maybe I just never noticed.

Hologram Farming Etiquette and Courtesy

You have to AoE the mobs to get all the tags, you can’t expect people to kill slowly or single target. High level players should just go to lvl 80 maps as they’re less crowded, I was farming coffers in Frostgorge Sound and there was far less competition there. It was ruthless though, speed farming akin to COF1. I actually enjoyed the competition to be honest, it was an all out battle for the coffers.

It’s a commonly held belief that the Sword does the most DPS. Yesterday, i was in the PvP lobby playing around with all the MH weapons and was surprised to see that the SB seemed to take down the target dummies faster (by almost 10%). That got me questioning the dominance of the Sword.

What build were you using? Sword and greatsword both kill mobs faster than the bows, at least with a power build they do. Also, remember that with a sword you have your offhand skills to factor into the equation, which means a dps buff with horn or burning damage (plus might from the fire field) with torch.

Any ideas on what some great spots for collecting lots of dragon coffers might be? I guess all mobs are dropping these at the same rates across Tyria? Or do you think certain maps are better than others? Any tips on spots with lots and lots of mobs to mow through?

If you’re doing a lot of buying and selling on the TP it’s really tedious to have to sift through hundreds of pages of transfer history with the forward and back arrows. It’d be a real time saver if we could have page numbers so we can quickly jump 20 or 30 pages in, which in some people’s cases might be a day or less of trading.

There’s just one thing that i’d like to ask you (by “you”, don’t mean poster above, it’s plural).

You keep saying that prices are going to be on par with most efficent farm in the game.
Which is CoF P1.
If i had a crystalline dust for everytime i’ve read in this forums “in 1h i can do X gold in cof, in 1h i can do 5 dust so price will rise until dust will be worth X/5” i’d have 2 bifrosts.
Now.
Following this reasoning…. what will happen when CoF p1 will be deleted from game, nerfed to the ground or brought down to the ratio of reward of other dungeons? (which is 2 to 5 times less, and maybe even more when perceived from players, due to other dgs requiring bigger effort to complete comapred to cof)

Do you expect really ppl to say “best farm in game now nets half of X (which was cof p1 gold gain), so all mats prices must halve to adapt to it”?
No.
Because what’s driving up prices is not (only) the sheer gold avaibility and superior farming due to CoF.
It’s the supply nosediving.
(and it’s nosediving why? because, between some glitch/bug fixes which were being exploited – and fixing those is a must – anet kept sneaking some direct farming nerfs. ask Plinx of tunnel events in CS…and to some mobs loot tables.)
And as long as there isn’t a direct intervention by Anet on it, we can make farming dust the most profitable thing in the game, but prices will just keep rising.

That’s actually exactly what I think will happen. CoF1 is by a large margin the biggest source of gold in the game. If it ever does get nerfed (unlikely due to ramifications) then the market will start to deflate, you lose ~50% of the gold income but keep the gold removing aspects the same. Therefore gold will be worth more and prices will drop to be in line with wherever the new equilibrium point is.

This will take many months since the initial panic, and chaos will throw the TP out of any semblance of normalcy for at least a couple weeks (which is one reason why the nerf is unlikely). But it will happen.

The market will always naturally settle towards the highest gold making activity. If you can make 2g/hr somewhere but can only farm 1g worth of mats in an hour then naturally people will gravitate towards the 2g/hr activity since it rewards them more for their time. Since less people are now farming the mat for 1g/hr the supply will drop and the price will rise until it hits a point where you can farm 2g worth of the mat in the same time as you could earn the 2g straight up.

I don’t think you will ever be able to farm 2g worth of mats at the same rate as farming 2g in COF (or whatever the current gold farming meta might be at the time). The reason being that the market isn’t cornered by mat farmers, it’s flooded with materials getting thrown up on the TP by casual players leveling their characters, grabbing dailies, going for completion, or just generally messing about in high level maps. These are the players driving down sell prices, as they’re often just dumping their daily drops for some quick silver rather than meticulously placing large sell orders to maximize profits, as a farmer of flipper might do.

Yeah I diversify a lot, I only buy more than a single stack of 250 when I’m trading high volume items that run for a handful of copper (eg. bolt of jute, iron ore, etc.).

I don’t know, to be honest I feel like I’d get more gold per hour simply farming COF. The only real benefit I see in playing the TP right now is that I can make gold while I’m working during the day, I can’t run a dungeon but I can log in for a few minutes every couple of hours to collect and sell. I guess I’m just not experienced enough to be raking in the big bucks yet.

Yeah but they’re the most frequently harvested nodes, so you get the most usage out of your unbreakable axe.

If I wanted to earn money out of my unbreakable gathering tools, I wouldn’t have bought them.

Me neither, that’s not what I meant, it would take years to pay off the cost of these tools. What I meant was that you get the most physical usage out of the axe, so whether you buy it because of the animation or just because you don’t want to bother with tools anymore, you’ll get the most bang for your buck with the axe. Kind of a moot point really though, IMO either you get all three so you never have to worry about harvesting tools again, or you might as well not buy any at all.

I really like the minis too. I just wish they would keep up with me. I turn around and the darn thing is half a map away trying to catch up lol. I also wish I didn’t have to reopen them after zone changes. It would be nice if they stayed open like pets and minions.

Yeah they always seem to trail behind. But what I’d really love would be more control over my minis, like being able to command their animations. I want to order my Ettin to run around thwomping people!

It’s because when the salvage bug was fixed you can now salvage ectos from level 68+ whites.

Oh yeah, and crystalline dust too. And I believe there’s a rare chance to get precursors off them if you drop them in the forge. Particularly, hang on…. (placing buy order)…. White level 64 shields.

See this is my point, I reckon limited edition works very well for items like skins, which gain appeal due to being taken off the market, but not for utility items. Hence why items like bag slots, bank tabs, new character slots, etc. are permanent fixtures on the gemstore, because people will buy them as and when they need them. Some people might be inclined to spend a hundred bucks on gems to grab limited edition sickles for all their characters, but my guess is that they’re the minority and Anet is probably losing money by making these items limited edition. Obviously I’m not gonna dish out 2400 gems for a character I hardly ever play anymore, but if the tools had available while I leveled that character I likely would have bought them.

I’m not really bothered about this personally, I would just like to see Arenanet maximize its gemstore sales.

Ah but it does.
If x is available only for y amount of time. That means only z amount of people will have access to it.
That means that c amount of people will still spend in-game money to buy gathering tools and we can assume that c > z.

If suddenly c < z there will be a rather big inflation in the game, since less than the majority of players won’t spend in-game money on the tools, which would mean less and less money got out of the system.

Coming up with a new gold sink is probably harder than you would think. Since it must be something that either sinks MASSIVE amount of gold (as in extremely expensive stuff) or something that people will use frequently (such as WP or whatever) enough so that it actually drains the amount of currency from the game.

I have to disagree, your premise on spending is correct but it makes no sense for Anet to invest time and effort from multiple departments into creating new items for the gemstore, only to then deliberately stint the income off those items because they’re bad for the economy. That’s like helping your kids set up a lemonade stand and then telling them they can only use a handful of lemons a day.

But assuming you were correct, I wonder how much they’d have to increase waypoint costs to cover the loss of the harvesting tool sink. Probably less than you’d think, considering the huge volume of waypoint transfers and the relatively small amount of characters that are actually running with unbreakable tools.

The forum doesn’t always represent the majority of players, but often it does. I don’t see why players who buy unbreakable harvesting tools for utility should flock to the forums any more than players who buy them for the animations, to be honest. But yeah, they aren’t that great of a quality of life improvement, so I reckon they typical buyer either appreciates both the animations and the utility, or likes supporting Anet when they can (my case). Either way, I still think Anet would make more cash off these items if they were permanent features.

From Arenanet’s perspective I really don’t understand this. I know some people buy these tools for the animations, but from reading the forums it seems that the majority is buying them for their utility, so surely Anet would make more money by leaving these up on the gemstore. I have 6 characters and only purchased one pick for my main as that was the character I played the most at the time. If the pick were a permanent feature of the TP I’d probably have bought two or three by now, and would gradually buy one for all my alts. However, if they bring it back there’s no way I’ll rush out and spend 4000 gems at once just because it’s limited edition.

Couldn’t care less about the animations, I buy these items so I don’t have to worry about harvesting tools. I do think the pick is pretty cool, but I wouldn’t mind if they looked identical to the standard tools. TBH I’d rather have faster harvesting animations than prettier ones.

solution to a broken market

They have stated that they plan to implement a way for players to clearly work toward earning a precursor..eventually. So players won’t have to throw countless items into the forge, save up gold, or cross their fingers and hope.

Also, I think they plan on adding new Legendary weapons at some point, which may help alleviate the prices on some of the current ones.

Definitely, i reckon we’ll see a significant dip in old precursor prices as soon as new legendaries are released.
