Ah I see, because I saw this article and was expecting the new weapons in the April Feature Pack but I guess I misinterpreted.

What about new methods for obtaining pre-cursors?

Plans for new legendary weapons

Hi,

Apologies if this is common knowledge but I’ve been almost entirely inactive since July. I read recently that there were plans for implementing new legendary weapons at some point soon, is there any confirmation, or even valid guesswork, as to when this might occur? I’m interested specifically in legendary weapons, not armor or trinkets etc. Thanks!

+1, it would be a lot easier if we could optionally filter out items our character can’t equip.

Also, +1 for the comment on the food filter not showing food. That always annoyed me.

So are prices on these mats likely to rise again over the next few days, after the initial dumping of hoarded goods people were speculating on? Or would you all expect them to just keep spiraling downwards?

Precursors from Forge

in Crafting

Posted by: Daemon.4295

Daemon.4295

There is no evidence and I doubt there will ever be, let alone I don’t understand why Anet would encourage a different rate.

There is no rationale for that – to punish people who choose one way or another?

I’m just not sure whether the RNG function is X% chance to drop a precursor, or X% chance for each precursor to drop. If it’s the latter then you’d be a lot more likely to get a precursor by throwing mixed weapons in. I assume if that was the case the community would have noticed the considerably higher drop rate, but as I’m not a fan of RNG gambling I never really looked into forging for precursors until today.

I’d like to see Torment on the longbow to facilitate barrage. Either move and take damage, or stand still and eat barrage. I’d put it on Hunter’s Shot, I think it would synergize really well with stealth.

Torment would be amazing. “What your chasing me? You’ll regret that move, buddy.”

Yeah you could really gain some range with stealth + torment. And it would make it easier to land barrage in a 1v1, which is my main gripe with the longbow.

Marksmanship awesome, skirmishing rubbish?

in Ranger

Posted by: Daemon.4295

Daemon.4295

I think skirmishing is still way better, but there have been some improvements to several traits in the marksman line making it a much better option now.

Skirmishing is more versatile, it has lots of useful traits for different builds. Marksmanship is useful mainly for power builds, but it does have a few useful traits in there for any ranger. Spotter now gives 150 precision to nearby allies, and anyone that uses a bow should want Piercing Arrows.

All of those are good…depending on build. Not exactly sure how moment of clarity works..so don’t know about that one.

moment of clarity doesnt work. I’ve tried to make it work, but unless that “extra” attack is meant for the pet, i get nothing from it.

Moment of Clarity definitely works, and it’s very powerful on the greatsword in conjunction with maul. Not as much on shortbow or longbow. You have to land an interrupt for it to work (the “interrupt” text needs to appear on screen), and your next attack will hit for 150% damage. So in the case of the GS, you interrupt with GS5, then hit maul for tons of damage. You have to be fast though, or you’ll waste the attack of opportunity on your autoattack.

Leave Barrage alone, its very good in WvW, it gives me dozens of loot bags, especially when used with sharpened stone and zephyr…

The 1 skill is still rubbish on LB, however…

I never said to completely delete the skill from the game but move it to utilities which you can swap at any given time. What is barrage doing to you when you’re not zerging in wvw? Not much///

Nooooo, barrage is great, it’s the best skill on the longbow! It’s the ranger’s best AoE weapon skill and one of our highest dps weapon skills. It’s a great opener (after applying vulnerability), great for tagging, great for splashing damage, great for opening on clumps of mobs in PvE (or zergs in WvW), you can hit hard to reach spots with it, it’s an AoE cripple (buying you more time at range), and you can use it for control… Why would you want to remove it? It’s just a little weaker now because of vulnerability being transferred to rapid fire.

Best way to level?

in Ranger

Posted by: Daemon.4295

Daemon.4295

The bear promotes bad playstyle and is the main reason, rangers are shunned in dungeons, as has been pointed out in many threads before.
Ranger is the only class where you can get to level 80 without ever learning the basics of the class. All because you can get carried through the PvE content by the training wheels, which the bear provides without actually learning to use the class mechanic or any of the skills/weapon sets.
If you don’t learn important clas mechanics during early PvE, you will have to learn them the very hard way, cause there is no other point in the game, where you can experiment as much as while you are still leveling. Most rangers, however, never learn them, which is damaging the reputation of the class as a whole.
I for my part rather have my pet die on me from time to time than having a pet, which sits around at 95-100% hitpoints all the time while hitting like a wet noodle. Because in skirmishing with squishy pets, you learn way more than leaning back and staring at the screen like on drugs while pressing a button once every few minutes.

What you say is true, but I think you could say the same for the other classes as well. So long as you’re up against trash mobs you can run pretty much any setup without worrying about learning the finer skills of your class. Granted, Ranger is the easiest class of all to level with, but you can auto-attack your way through hearts and personal story on other classes as well. The difference is just that Rangers can do it against mobs 4 levels above theirs thanks to pet tanking.

Thanks for both the answers, you guys explained it really well.
Ill try leveling with berserker gear, and a Tank/DPS pet.

I’m not sure yet, how to keep DPS pets alive, Like birds or cats they always seem to die really quick. Whats the trick to keep them alive?

They shouldn’t be dying very often in open world PvE, but if that’s the case just use tougher pets. If you’re leveling in berserker gear you’re doing most of the damage anyway, and you need your pet to tank for you. For fast leveling you should build to do as much damage as you can, as quickly as you can. I’d run a 30/30/10/0/0.

Piercing Arrows is absolutely essential if you run a bow, let alone two bows! To me it’s one of the most important traits across all my characters, it doubles or triples my damage output. Ranger Changes on July 23, 2013

in Ranger

Posted by: Daemon.4295

Daemon.4295

Just in case the devs are ignoring the other threads relating to the longbow changes, I want to toss my hat in the “I hate these changes” pile. Why? Allow me to explain.

As a PvE player, stealth on a longbow does me absolutely no good. My pet tanks for me while I attack from long range. And I have an area of effect cripple. And I have a knock back. Stealth simply brings nothing to the table for a PvE longbow user. So Hunter’s Shot is now a dead spot on my already limited skill bar.

Expanding on that, Rapid Fire now applies 10 stacks of vulnerability. But it does so gradually, one at a time. So it will never benefit from the full 10 stacks, whereas it could with the old Hunter’s Shot. And because Rapid Fire is now a condition applier, it’s role has changed. It used to be something held in reserve for when targets made it inside the Long Range Shot’s damage drop-off (1000).

Where I used to open a fight with 20 stacks of vulnerability with Hunter’s Shot and Opening Strike from me and my pet and held Rapid Fire for close-ranged enemies I now open with 10 vulnerability and have a completely useless weapon skill.

If the idea was to get people to use the longbow with Remorseless, I don’t think that’s going to work. Between Eagle Eye, Piercing Arrows, Spotter, Steady Focus, and the signet traits, there’s just too many good traits competing for too few slots to justify resetting Opening Strike once every 12 seconds.

tl;dr – I hate the change. I implore to change the longbow back and add a stealth skill whenever you roll out your new skills and traits system latter this you if you feel you must give the longbow a stealth skill.

I’ll throw my hat in that pile as well. Stand strong because there are a lot of opinions out there that can’t see past pvp.

Guys, the longbow is an extremely powerful weapon in PvE, almost too strong. Due to the pet mechanic you can sit back and fire away to your heart’s content while your pet holds aggro. In PvP it’s a really poor weapon due to the impossibility of maintaining range. This change took a very small amount of damage off a strong PvE weapon, but made a very weak PvP weapon a lot more playable. And personally I’m finding the stealth useful in PvE as well. So when you talk about PvE vs PvP, you have to acknowledge that the benefits to the longbow in PvP far outweigh the marginal dps loss in PvE.

The greatsword change on the other hand is far more annoying, it’s a sugarcoated nerf that takes a lot more dps out of my PvE cycle than the LB fix.

I just don’t like the time limited achievements and activities, they really penalize more casual players. I struggle at the moment just to do my dailies and the living story, and have almost no time for anything else. Its’s getting to the point where either I give up on staying on top of living story, or I give up on doing the other things I enjoy (PvP, dungeons, etc.). Don’t get me wrong, I love all the new content and how much effort Anet is putting in, I just wish I had more time to complete it.

Awesome.

I don’t think that makes any difference at all, most players will dodge out of any red ring as soon as they see it appear. All the more so if they don’t know what’s coming. Stealth will be great for many purposes (escaping, re-positioning, gaining range, entangle bombing, trap setting, infiltrating in PvE), but I don’t think barrage is one of them.

I honestly don’t see the point of giving stealth to Hunter’s Shot. IMO, it would be perfect for the shortbow after the range nerf, but the longbow is meant to be used at very long range, where it’s easier to avoid ranged attacks, and it already has a counter against melee attacks in Point Blank Shot.

I think the logic is that those 3 seconds of stealth allow you to regain range, Point Blank Shot only really buys you a couple of seconds. I think it’s a really good change, in combination with greatsword swoop you have great escape tactics now.

Also, let’s not forget the change to Maul. They don’t say how much vulnerability this skill will apply, but it should improve GS autoattack damage and hopefully overall GS damage output.

Looking at the amount of vuln we might be able to apply now between GS, LB and remorseless, I am going to guess that is the next thing sPvPers will complain about.

It’ll be great in dungeons, vulnerability is really strong in party combat.

It’s a tie-up to the Remorseless buff. Remorseless and LB now work so well together it’s gonna be a tough choice between SotBM and Remorseless for LB rangers!

Also, it’s ANet’s solution to the LB having no way to defend itself.

Yeah, Remorseless is definitely more appealing now. I still doubt it will be able to oust SotB for me though, I’ll have to play around with it a bit and see. It’d be hard to give up stability and invulnerability.

Ranger:
Entangle: Updated the damage and bleeding skill facts to properly display their actual effects.
Rapid Fire: This skill now applies vulnerability on each hit.
Hunter’s Shot: This skill no longer applies vulnerability on each hit, but now grantss the ranger stealth for 3 seconds.
Point Blank Shot: Increased the range from 600 to 900.
Maul: This skill now applies vulnerability instead of bleeding.
Counterattack—Crippling Throw: This skill can now be used while moving. Increased the cripple duration to 5 seconds.
Whirling Defense: This skill now grants 4 seconds of retaliation for the duration of the skill.
Call of the Wild: This skill is now a blast finisher.
Remorseless: This trait now reapplies Opening Strike when the ranger gains stealth or kills an enemy.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/july-23-content-release-notes/

I’m pretty excited about stealth on Hunter’s Shot to be honest, at 3s with a 12s cooldown that’s 25% uptime on stealth (30+% with Quickdraw trait). I don’t know whether it’ll make the LB ranger stronger, but it will certainly make it more fun to play

Blowing people away in WvW with longbow is currently the easiest possible thing you can do, since it’s 1800 range and the DPS is extremely high for an accurate ranged weapon. The only other weapon that deals comparable damage at 1200 range or more are grenades and guardian scepters, and scepter requires the target to stand in AOE. Not happening in WvW.

Barrage requires your target to stand in AoE just as much as guardian scepter’s Smite does, only Smite is instacast, you can use it on the run, it has a 6 second cooldown, and there’s an immobilize on scepter 3. So unlike Smite, Barrage is pretty useless in any sort of small skirmish, and to be honest its damage isn’t all that great even when you do land it just cause its duration is so long. Quickness is really essential for this skill and for the longbow in general, particularly if you want it to be at all functional in smaller combat.

okey, but the melee weapon doesn’t really matter? I mean does sword or GS scale the best with power?

Depends on your personal choice. Many prefer sword/warhorn for pure damage. I, personally, prefer the GS as it isn’t that much slower than and has better survivability than the S/W combo meaning that I can stay in melee longer.

I’m with SynfulChaot, GS has great utility and since Anet buffed maul it does enough damage for it to be my default melee weapon. I wouldn’t use it without Moment of Clarity though.

Throw in the all the dead falls, cramped corners next to map edges, and ranger’s access to very little stability or its own knockbacks and you have the worst class for the map.

@Devs: Berserker Rangers need ZS back

in Ranger

Posted by: Daemon.4295

Daemon.4295

Dear devs,

You’ve always said that you want to increase the number of valid build options within each profession, and in that respect the power/crit ranger has always trailed behind the more popular ranger setups in terms of usage adoption. It’s a setup that needs a little bit of love in order to gain popularity, yet it continues to receive what appear to be ‘contingent nerfs’, i.e. nerfs that were targeted at other setups but inadvertently (I assume) end up affecting the berserker ranger as well. The original quickness nerf and the loss of zephyr’s speed both hurt the berserker ranger’s DPS output, and I’m guessing this was unintended as I don’t see how this setup can be considered over-powered or over-utilized.

Zephyr’s Speed was a key trait for power/crit rangers, who stood to benefit most from it as they have the highest direct dps, and surely you must realize how much they needed it to compete. I can only assume that ZS was swapped with Instinctual Bond to take BM rangers down a notch, but in doing so you gravely hurt berserker rangers by making the trait totally inaccessible at the bottom of the Beastmastery line. Your balance team surely knows better than I do what’s best for the game, but in this occasion there may have been alternative options that might have better promoted ranger balance. Perhaps ZS could have been moved somewhere along the marksmanship line, for example? This would have kept it accessible to berserker rangers, while promoting build diversity.

I highly doubt I’ll ever see Zephyr’s Speed again on my berserker ranger, I just hope someone from the dev team reads this post as I can’t help but think that more thought could have been put into the swap with Instinctual Bond.

TLDR: Berserker rangers were in no way in need of a nerf, but were badly hurt by the loss of Zephyr’s Speed, which is now totally inaccessible as it requires 30 points in the BM line. Anet should consider moving this trait to a different trait line (marksmanship?) to promote build diversity.

IMO all we need to shift the dps split more towards the ranger is a new category of pet that does low base damage, say on par with bears, but buffs the ranger some (eg one or two stacks of might) on its family skills. Clean and simple option for transferring some of the pet’s dps to the ranger without affecting the current balance.

How does it fare against good thief? Do we have a chance to withstand their crits before they bleed/burn to death?

Shadow Arts thieves won’t die to traps due to how much cleanse they have.

S/D thieves will just evade all over them with flanking spam.

How do you evade something you can’t see? If they trigger a stack of poison, flame, and spike the odds are already tipped well in your favor, even if they cleanse immediately. You can drop the next round of traps at or around your feet once they get in your face, so they have to sit through three more traps (remember, they pulse) plus your torch bonfire to melee you. In the meantime, you have your two sword evades plus dodges to burn their initiative and avoid damage, high toughness from rabid gear, and support from your pet, whichever you may have chosen. I really don’t find thieves problematic in comparison to other classes, at least in sPvP.

How does it fare against good thief? Do we have a chance to withstand their crits before they bleed/burn to death?

Traps are an excellent counter to thieves, I run condition trapper in PvP and can’t remember the last time a thief beat me in a square 1v1. WvW is different of course, but in sPvP with three traps on the ground and traps off cooldown thieves don’t stand a chance. It’s also a lot harder for them to get away, as you can bomb them with ground targeted traps if they pop stealth.

Actually , the game compensates the lack of utilities and elites with increased stats .

Do you mean that an upscaled level 80 has higher base stats than an actual level 80?

OP – I agree that it doesn’t fit in well with axe/axe. So don’t use it. Since before the patch i have been using sword/axe in my serker build in wvw and pvp and it fits in marvellously with this build.

PoS pulls them in, proceed to entangle, sword skill 3 then quickness for beastly damage. If you pull them but are overwhelmed by their close-combat ability then sword skill 2 gives a great disengager if you’re not running lightning reflexes. The latter combined with sword skill 2 also makes for some serious retreat distance

Yeah that’s pretty beast, particularly if you pull them in and pop SoS and QZ for six seconds of pure damage. Personally I might go for RaO instead of Entangle though.

I like the pull mechanism a lot, it works really well in conjunction with axe5. Offhand axe makes a lot more sense as a weapon now, as both skills function as counters to ranged opponents. Torch = cond damage, Horn = DPS, Axe = Range counter. If I played a melee ranger I’d probably really like offhand axe. Sword/Axe to stick on my opponent, reflect projectiles, and if they do get away, yank them back with path of scars. Or hold midrange for a while with Axe/Axe, and when I’m ready yank my opponent to me and go to town with Sword/Horn and QZ. Fun!

My take on how ranger got here

Yeah I have to say the guardian is a really solid and balanced class. I’ve been leveling my guardian alt lately, he’s currently lvl 45ish, and I’m having a tough time choosing between weapons, skills, and traits because there are so many great options at your disposal. With my ranger I rarely regret not picking up a certain skill or trait, so yeah, you gotta wonder what state we’d be in if the ranger had been a developer favorite.

i swear to god..if you people complain about an “issue” and get the sword nerfed in some way or other i’m going to rage so freakin hard. We all know the more attention we get the more nerfed we get…can we go back to complaining about nerfs that have already happened..

There, Proxy, I’ve fixed it and made it fair. Sorry to disappoint/offend you. It reads much better now. Again, Daemon and Proxy, thank you for making this a useful post instead of another rant. /bow exit stage left

Nah, I’m sure you wouldn’t have turned it into a rant On the positive side, you did get called a “tin foil hat hearer”, which I thought was pretty funny. If it was me that would have gone straight into my signature!

Thanks Bryzy and Chopps for pointing this article out by the way, regardless of Jon Peters’ comments on the Guardian it was an interesting read. I never played GW1 but it’s interesting to get some insight into the thought process behind how the classes were reshaped for GW2. Does anyone know of a good link to descriptions of the Marksman and Warden classes originally considered? I take it one was an archer and the other a sort of beastmaster?

Where does he say Warriors and Rangers only existed for flavor? All he’s saying is that there is synergy between the GW1 monk class and the GW2 necro, engineer, ele, and guardian classes, and less so with ranger and warrior.

I wouldn’t say that people make baseless complaints, but I do feel they blow things out of proportion, or don’t understand the concept of balance around high skill competition.

The longbow and shortbow should have never operated so similarly, and the damage should have always had its highest focus coming from the player (I’m talking like 90% player, 10% pet).

I personally think that when one person who is popular in the community expressed his justified concerns, it turned into a bunch of lemmings crying about the apocalypse.

That’s unfair, Rangers clearly took a hit to pet damage and many rangers are running BM bunkers at the moment, so it’s only normal to see lots of complaints. There may be more options than ever before for this class now, but no one likes seeing their favorite build nerfed. I hardly think it took some particularly popular player to set off complaints regarding the changes to sb and pet damage. But I do agree with the rest of your post, I reckon it’s just a lot harder to understand the full impact of a buff than the impact of a nerf.

Longbow still doesn't...

in Ranger

Posted by: Daemon.4295

Burst well enough or sustain well enough.

It definitely got buffed to say the least, with rapid firing being a half second quicker channel and arrows from the autoattack firing once per second, but the damage isn’t enough pressure with the lack of mobility that still exists on the weapon.

Still, its a good update for the longbow, it just isn’t where it needs to be yet. Another cripple outside of barrage, or an immobilize, would be all the weapon really needs now though.

I’ve been asking for a chance cripple on LB1 since the beta. Don’t think this is gonna happen though cuz it makes too much sense.

And I’ve been asking for a snare on lb3. Open with vulnerability and immobilize, follow with barrage (which would actually land in a 1v1), autoattack til gap is closed, point blank into rapid fire and then weapon swap. It would have been far more useful than the increased cripple on barrage, the problem is landing that skill in the first place.

Regarding decreased aftercast, I haven’t had a chance to log in yet. Does it make up for the loss of Zephyr’s Speed in terms of DPS? I imagine the longbow is in a slightly better place despite losing that key trait, would you guys confirm?

Harsh nerfs, but to be honest they don’t seem unfair. Ranger pets just did too much damage and it really makes more sense for the longbow to fire from further range than the shortbow. Personally I might have just added a distance penalty to the shortbow at 900+ range though.

Why thank you! I’ll will, in fact, enjoy them a lot

Some points to further illustrate my joy:

  1. Rangers are no longer forced to use Signet of the Hunt if they want faster movespeed. Call of the Wild is just enough as a source of swiftness.
  2. It gives rangers a reason to invest 30 deep into NM. It just so happens to give 3000 hp and +30% boon duration. Oh hey look, ANet is promoting trait diversity :O
  3. It gives rangers a reason to use shouts. Huh what? ANet is promoting utility diversity too? :O
  4. It makes using Soldier Runes viable on rangers. And guess what? Rangers have a 15 second cd shout that gives the pet protection and stealth! This is arguably the best shout to use with Soldier Runes. The closest contender is Shake It Off because its a stun break and removes another condition, but it has a 25s cd. (no regen/swiftness for them though!)
  5. Regen and swiftness might not be great in PvE/Dungeons, but they are incredible in sPvP/WvW. One of my biggest issues with BM Bunkers is that I don’t have access to SotH or Swiftness so I’m forced to stay at back point even though I want to do secondary objectives (like getting Stillness). With this change I finally have a way to reliably get swiftness.
  6. How many classes have access to Regen and Swiftness on such a low cooldown?

I will admit I’m going to miss Zephyr’s Speed but then I get 5 more trait points to move around and use to try out new builds. So many changes were made, it’ll be a fun month figuring out new builds

Granted, the new GM trait sounds really strong, but you’ll have to go 30 points into NM to get it.

I am very sad about Zephyr’s Speed, wish they had moved it to a different trait line instead of turning into a GM trait. Zephyr’s Speed works best for power builds, and now it’s totally inaccessible.
