than igot an other problem :p cant diside between kudzu and dreamer :s like then both but i like 1vX builds so yea..

If you do a lot of 1vX then I’d go for Dreamer, if you like them both. Shortbow is probably the most all-round useful weapon rangers have anyway, you’ll always be able to show off your Dreamer

oke, i hear good and bad things of a LB ranger :o whats the best for 1v1 longb or shortbow. gone make the best 1v1 build. with lb or sb

Definitely shortbow, longbow is simply terrible for 1v1 and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. It’s a decent weapon for PvE, a great weapon for zerging, and an awful weapon for 1v1s. The reason is very simple, in a 1v1 your opponent will always close the gap on you and the longbow does pathetically low damage at short range, due to the way the LB1 skill functions.

I use signet actives all the time, with signet of beastmaster. Stone, wild, renewal, are all good. Hunt is pretty weak, you can get the same effect out of any interrupt with MoC or just casting GS5 into thin air (afects pet only though). Its only real advantage is that you can cast it quite a bit before initiating combat.

In 2 on 1, I’ve found the best luck in focusing burst (as much as the class can manage) on the squishier of the two and then using the SB to strafe the other while my pet chips away at the downed player which doesn’t take terribly long with a cat or raven.

To be honest, the only class I have ever seen take on a 3v1 against good players is a thief speced for stealth but then running away isn’t the same as winning.

I’d say eles are the masters of 1vX, with rangers in second place.

With piercing arrows and a trap build you can win 1v3s, if you can get your oponents to run through your traps while you have them off cooldown. First set of traps, entangle, second set of traps, and circle with piercing shortbow.

How’s WD bad in tPvP? Those whirling finishers, reflect (allies can hide in you to heal), and guaranteed projectile finisher (I -know- our autos are 20% but this is 100% and applies the effect to everyone on the way there AND back).

I can’t speak for tpvp but in wvw, standing still for any period of time (much less 5 seconds) means you get hit with a dozen aoe’s, half a dozen snares, and/or bursted by a thief flanking the battle to go after squishy back liners.

Activating WD in a zerg moshpit might as well just down you automatically, fart out the bag, and save the enemy the trouble.

Standing still is suicide in wvw, axe5 should be mobile like the thief’s whirling reflect.

Ricochet still does miserable damage. Garbage auto.

This is the real problem with axe, ricochet does negligible single target damage. That’s why I hardly ever run mainhand axe, which is unfortunate because I find it to be the most fun ranger weapon. I rarely run offhand axe either because path of scars just doesn’t bring much to my game.

Overall I feel all ranger weapons are in a good place now with the exception of longbow and axe, which need some work. Axe needs more single target damage and lb needs a snare on lb3.

offhand axe is far from useless, or maybe i play a different game or something :|

Read the first line.
In PvP.

Axe off hand needs something. Even full zerker the auto attack does more damage than the axe 5.

I’ve done over 50k with axe 5. Lupicus, traited signet of stone, reflected AoE. Also, the act of reflecting tends to pull aggro so you can use it to pull enemies off someone trying to heal.

That is PvE.
Gotta say which mode.

In PvP it is debatably one of the worst ability in game.
In PvE it is workable.

What would make it better in PvP?

Being able to move while you chanel it.

I disagree, there are far worse weapon skils around (necro staff 1 is the worst I can think of). Reflecting projectiles is actually really strong in lower level pvp where the majority of players don’t realize they need to stop firing at you.

Cond or Power build?

I’m working on a full set of Rampager gear because I suspect you can actually do more damage with a power/precision/cond trap build than a berserker build. My guess is that a 30/30/5/0/5 trapper can take down bosses and other tougher mobs faster than a 30/30/5/0/5 berserker, while the berserker might be faster at burning down trash mobs. I’m curious to see how much damage I can do with a sigil of fire longbow on a full rampager build.

I blame AN for this filth. And I doubt anyone from AN will ever read and understand how players like me feel about this issue, or do something about it.
Ever.

I don’t think you can blame Anet, minmaxing and speed farming is hard coded into the mindsets of every MMO community. No matter what the developers do there will always be a specific class, build, or tactic that will make dungeon runs that little bit faster, and the meta will naturally gravitate towards that. Personally I see it as a non-issue as I have no trouble finding a pug party for dungeons through gw2lfg, so it doesn’t really affect me in any way.

Will Southsun be ending in a Group Dungeon?

I would like to know so that I don’t waste my time with the content. I have no desire to complete a single player chain; only to beg 4 other players to run me through a dungeon.

Forcing people to party to complete a dungeon is just wrong, especially after a long chain of soloable content.

I sure hope so, in my personal opinion temporary themed dungeon events are the most entertaining type of event in GW2. Keep them coming ArenaNet!!!

Ranger Tiers?

The class being said to be good in spvp, no doubt, is no more than people simply parroting what someone else said. The source of which is probably a number of people, who you could count on just one hand, who have done well with the class in spvp. Just because 5 out of dozens have made a good go, doesn’t make the class good.

This is just outright insulting to the community, how can you claim that players with hundreds of hours of spvp under their belts are basing their claims off hearsay rather than personal experience? Are you suggesting that they persevere in playing a weak class, blinded to their poor performance, simply because they once heard that some top tier teams roll with a ranger or two? I consistently achieve pretty good success rates in basic pug play with a ranger, and I’m certainly no pvp guru. Are you counting me on one of your hands?

Since your name doesn’t show up on the leader boards, no I’m not counting you.

Of course you’re not, or any of the countless other average players that do alright for themselves in spvp despite your claim that the class is weak and we’re all just mindless retweeters. If you disagree on the ranger’s performance in pvp that’s fine by me, but you can’t dismiss everyone else as being incapable of judging a game they’ve been playing on a daily basis for months.

I think we’re not on the same page. You seem to be focused on just DPS while I’m after utility with a bit of damage.

Wolf is definitely king for utility, but i feel that it lacks the damage that birds/cats bring. Cats on the other hand bring damage and just damage so it’s not as good a utility pet.

Yes, I agree that you don’t have to use 2 of the same type to be effective, but I just prefer birds over cats due to their size. Most people ignore my birds because it just swooping around them and it’s hard to determine when they actually deal their damage, while cats are really noticeable and it’s easier to see when they’re about to swipe at you.

Lastly, I think I derailed your thread :-S sorry bout that XD

On topic: If there’s any buff that will be given for lacerating slash, I’d rather have it more bleed stacks or longer duration. The Arctodus I haven’t used much so I can’t really comment on it.

I understand what you mean. :P

You make a good point. The birds are small and mobile, while the cats are all in your face.

Still, I feel like the eagle/hawk is all messed up. lol. Wouldn’t you agree that if Quickening Screech was an on-command attack, and Lacerating Scratch was a normal attack, that it’d be more effective? It’d be better for utility AND for damage.

I agree with this, I see no point in an on-demand pet ability that you have to spam with absolutely no regard for the situation. I’d much rather have control over the swiftness.

Personally, I like Lacerating Slash. I even trait for faster F2 Cooldowns just for it. Spamming it has gotten me more DPS than using the Raven’s Blind or the Owl’s Chill.

Yeah you can get higher DPS out of Eagle/Hawk than Raven or Owl, but then again, you’ll get higher DPS out of cats so….

Exactly. There’s currently no reason to take an eagle over a cat. I even tested it.

Without the on-command ability, it took my jaguar 85 seconds to take down five Heavy Target Golems.
With the on-command ability, it took my jaguar 64 seconds to take down five Heavy Target Golems.

Without the on-command ability, it took my eagle 126 seconds to take down five Heavy Target Golems.
With the on-command ability, it took my eagle 89 seconds to take down five Heavy Target Golems.

The eagle has has Quickening Screech. Even with that, though, a cat will still be more effective. Especially since Quickening Screech is activated randomly, and can do more harm than good sometimes.

If Quickening Screech was the on-command ability, and Lacerating Slash was a normal ability, it’d make much more sense and the eagle could compete with the cat family.

Wow, I lazily tested this last night on heavy golems and had a much bigger difference between cats (jag and lynx), and hawk. I don’t have the results on me but they killed at least 20% faster, I tested with both 0 traits and full pet traits.

EDIT: I also realized how cool the lynx’s 600 foot leap is. Psychologically it’s gotta grab some players’ aggro when they see your pet fly at their face from 600 away.

Daemon.4295

In all of my hours playing this game not once have I ever heard or seen “NO RANGERS”. Speed farmers simply ask for zerker warriors and mesmers to go as quickly as possible, it’s not that rangers specifically are poor, it’s that the current meta gravitates towards mesmers and warriors to complete dungeon runs as quickly as possible. To be honest, since the quickness nerf I’m not even entirely sure that’s still accurate.

I could care less what dungeon farmers do though, you can easily avoid them and have fun in a dungeon with any class. I don’t see why Anet feels the need to rectify this, it’s not like you need to wait longer than five minutes to run COF as a ranger or a necro. If anything, I’d like to see them put a stop to dungeon farming altogether through better loot in open world PVE. There are other ways to stop the botters.

Let the guy/gal play what he/she wants, if you want to try a Ranger in WvWvW, then go for it, don’t listen to all the negative people, go and have fun!

It’s all false press anyway, rangers are very useful in WvW. Stice was spot on with his analysis. Rangers are great at raking up badges with a longbow, although the actual damage output isn’t super high, while being one of the best roamers in the game with both trap builds and BM bunkers.

Rangers can zerg surf with the best of them in berserker’s gear with a longbow and either axe/warhorn or greatsword on switch. Very few other builds can match them for badges per hour.

If they use cleric’s or apothecary’s gear instead and run suitable weapons they are among the most effective solo/small group skirmishers and can hold their own against any of the other popular roaming builds.

In other words, rangers are pretty solid in WvW.

New life for Berserker rangers?

I think Indoles summed it up pretty well in the end, as nice as the lower cd’s and increased effects are for signets/skills, at the end of the day the old beserker ranger style was built around less time for the opponent to react and the old qz was a big hit to us. But the updates from this patch will probably make some old rangers pull out their beserker builds for another go

Oh there’s no doubt berserkers were stronger in PvP before the quickness nerf, even with the longer cooldowns on signets and shorter QZ duration. The question is just whether the new fixes have made berserkers playable again, which they weren’t initially after the nerf. I am finding that my berserker is stronger in PvE (slightly stronger at range, considerably stronger in melee with GS), but weaker in WvW (weaker at range, while the changes in melee are irrelevant as I only use GS to block and escape). This is because the mechanics of ranged and close combat change when you’re fighting intelligent human players.

Overall, I preferred the state of the berserker pre-quickness nerf but I can play berserker now. Thanks to the latest patch I once again find the longbow zerker to be the strongest option in a zerg v zerg scenario, while there are likely better options for all other PvP and PvE scenarios in terms of both damage output and survivability.

30 Marksman/30 Skirmishing/5 Wilderness/5 Beast is what i’m running on the build right now.

I’m thinking if you see a 2v1, you should switch to Signet of the Stone over Technobabble.

Technobabble is so incredibly powerful though in a 1v1 against some people..You can basically just lock someone down while you kill them.

Signet of the Stone though would help a ton… But yea Signet Builds right now are way better then they use to be now that the cooldowns have dropped.

That’s what I’m running right now, but I don’t have access to technobabble. It’s a great build in conjunction with the greatsword thanks to traited signets and attacks of opportunity, and very nice with longbow as well.

Yes I am really torn between Marksmanship, Skirmishing, Wilderness Survival and Beastmastery now.

Marksmanship offers a great DPS increase with guaranteed crits and the signet build.

Skirmishing combines 2 offensive direct dmg stats in one line and has great minor traits. I still like moment of clarity even if it is not that strong for a grandmaster trait. Wish it would proc on pet interrupts aswell, it actually should.

Wilderness Survival still offers the most sustain and valid condition removal.

Beastmastery increases pet damage by 30% and makes them very tanky.

Yeah it’s tough, luckily you can pick two!

New life for Berserker rangers?

I find the notion that whether one build is viable is misleading. A wooden stick is viable in the hands of Tiger Woods, for example. Instead, you should focus on whether you do well with it with your playstyle. Then, figure out how that ties into what your team is doing. And most of all: experiment. You will find many misinformed opinions on the forums in terms of build viability.

By the way…no mention on Protect Me with buffed pets????

I didn’t mention Protect Me here because this post is specifically targeted at berserker rangers, many of whom (myself included) opted to play around with other builds after the quickness nerf. A berserker doesn’t need protect me, traited SoS is a lot better and running both is overkill.

Interesting…you should tell that to no life kripparian and see what he says considering he does just that (runs protect me). Why would you run both though? That’s an odd suggestion to say the least.

I don’t know who that is, but signet of stone gives invulnerability to you and your pet, plus toughness. Protect me gives you invulnerability and kills your pet, and no toughness. The only reason to use protect me is if you don’t want to go 30 into marksmanship for SoB, and lots of berserkers make good use of that trait for signet of the wild and signet of the hunt as well. Again, this is a thread aimed at berserker rangers.

I switched to a full gc after the patch to test a signet build. Ran CoF with my pets on attack mode the entire time and they only died once at the acolytes and once at the final boss, and both times it was my fault for bad microing.

10k greatsword?

I don’t think anything a ranger can do hits for 10k. I might be mistaken, I’ve simply never seen it.

I’ve done it, and without food or buffs. Moment of clarity maul after popping signets (hunt and wild) and a berserker will top 10k if he crits. It’s super gimmicky though, I only topped 10k trying deliberately just to see if I could, but I frequently top 8.5k.

Patch in a nutshell: Signets way to go

in Ranger

Daemon.4295

Sigil of Intelligence + Signet of the Hunt + Signet of the Beastmaster is kinda fun.

Start the fight with a guaranteed crit +150% damage Maul, and then during the fight save the active Signet of the Hunt until I swap back to Greatsword for another guaranteed crit +150% damage Maul. Because these big hits are guaranteed, I can lose some Precision and mix in Cavalier or Valkyrie that keeps the high power and crit-damage but adds in some defense.

Had this for awhile, but now with the other changes I am more likely to actually trigger the other signets and get the +25% damage.

Don’t forget moment of clarity, you can always 150% maul after an interrupt.

Sounds like you expect the pet to run to the mob, run behind him and initate combat. Although I would prefer that behavior that isnt the way itll work, it will only run behind the mob if it is targeting you.

I would be curious to see its behavior if the pet is attacking a mob that targets another player. Would probably not run behind the mob since “behind” gets weird if the target isnt the pets master.

/Q

It should always run behind the mob regardless of the position of the ranger or any other players. The point of the change is to put the pet out of the line of damage of most cleave attacks. Obviously 360 degree cleaves will hit them anyway.
