I’ve never seen an underwater legendary, I imagine very few people actually have one. At least you’d be one of the few!

I wouldn’t use the trait without Technobabble, It doesn’t increase the Stun/Daze enough on GS/SB to matter.

Yeah with technobabble I imagine it could become a pretty strong trait, without that you really need to be a GS user for it to be worthwhile. I don’t really understand the logic behind this trait to be honest, Ranger doesn’t have enough daze/stun or interrupts for it to be justified as a grandmaster. It’s odd because Anet generally do a good job of providing traits that mesh well with each profession’s core boons and conditions. Moment of Clarity just seems off the mark.

Point Blank Shot (Longbow 4): Useful?

Daemon.4295

It’s actually one of the best skills we have…

^ this.

Even if you don’t use it as a way to create distance, it’s great for:

1) Interrupting enemies using big skills *cough*hundred blades*cough*
2) Knocking people off of ledges
3) Preventing someone from stomping an ally

And that’s just in PvP.

If you’re just spamming in on cooldown as a desperate attempt to get a melee off of you, then you’re not using it right.

This. LB4 is an a great skill in WvW (and PvE), the only thing I’d trade it for would be a snare, like Warrior LB’s pin down.

Yea, I’m jealous of pin down, but point blank is the only knock back ability rangers have unless you count the one that is a counter attack on the greatsword.

And anyone that does jumping puzzles in WvW, knows how valuable a knock back is.

The knock back is great, but rapid fire is too easy to dodge and barrage is practically impossible to land on a human target. A pin would be essential and would really boost Longbow damage. Sure, against the golem in the mists I have no complaints, but you can only state that “longbow damage is really strong” (latest state-of-the-game interview) if you assume that all its attacks are landing. Sometimes I get the feeling that the devs don’t take actual combat mechanics into account enough when assessing weapons.

The longbow in general is overall inferior in a 1v1 PvP scenario to the short bow and is really better suited for large group PvP or PvE, so I’d rather see them make the change to crip shot on the short bow to make it immobilize as well. Not only would this play to the strengths of the short bow, but it would also make it easier to flank enemies for the extra damage/bleeding.

I don’t know, I kind of disagree with that. Sure I’d love a snare on SB, but it’s already viable in a 1v1 and the cripple+leap back works well. LB on the other hand just doesn’t work at all in a 1v1, while with a pin like the warrior’s it could actually become usable.

Longbow's problem

in Ranger

Posted by: Daemon.4295

Daemon.4295

Note that it is clearly a damage “penalty” and not a damage “bonus”, as even at max range the longbow does less damage than other ranger weapons.

i really would love hearing how you came to that conclusion.

Test steady weapons in the mists and you’ll see, as others have posted time and again, that LB and SB damage are roughly on par with each other at max range. If you factor in flanking and bleeding, SB starts to outperform LB max range damage. At mid range the longbow becomes a pretty weak weapon, at short range it’s basically unusable, at best you can go through a skill rotation and then swap out. Hence why I call it a “penalty”, if it was a “bonus” I would expect it to be a perfectly viable weapon at any range and better at long range. That’s just semantics though, call it what you want but the fact remains that the longbow is only really viable at max range. Or would you disagree with that?

Where is your damage coming from with this build? Not from traps, not from condition damage, not from your pet, and not really from your weapons either. Crit damage scales off power, so having low power (you have zero over base 916) and high crit is ineffective. Are you sure you wouldn’t have higher damage if you dropped some of that precision for additional power?

I’m all for avoiding cookie-cutter builds, but IMO any set-up needs to provide at least one reliable source of damage output or be geared towards bunkering, and this seems to be neither.

Longbow's problem

in Ranger

Posted by: Daemon.4295

Daemon.4295

Longbow’s problem is that it doesn’t hit hard/fast enough, and that it has no mechanism for holding an opponent at range to avoid the distance penalty.

Note that it is clearly a damage “penalty” and not a damage “bonus”, as even at max range the longbow does less damage than other ranger weapons. This renders longbow almost completely useless in close-quarter combat, such as sPvP.

Landing Interrupts

The easiest way to land interrupts in PvE is to use GS5 straight after initiating an attack on a mob. For example, swoop at your target with GS3 and immediately hit skill 5. This technique is useful if you trait Moment of Clarity for 150% damage after interrupts, allowing you to kick off many encounters with a 50% damage bonus. Note that it does not work on all mob types.

I would suggest that you try swapping your specs around, you will probably do better with a condition ranger and a power/crit thief. Condition damage trapper/SB ranger is one of this profession’s best and most versatile builds, while thief can do insane burst damage. Trap ranger is also really fun to play.

PS: Spirits are terrible, drop them in favor of… well anything else. I run signets with my berserker build, but even untraited traps and shouts are better than spirits.

Which is better for a DPS ranger? Berserker or Rampager gear? I want to maximize my damage but hear crit dmg isn’t too good on Ranger because damage is divided? Should I invest in conditions?

Depends what you want to do. A condition trap/SB ranger will do better roaming in WvW and in tougher dungeons, berserker LB/SB will do better in general PvE, easier dungeons, and keep attack/defense in WvW. If maximizing DPS is your ultimate goal then Berserker is better than Rampager, for a glass cannon build.

That’s part of what a QA team does. They look at changes to make sure they fix what was intended and not break other things.

Simply as an analogy, if Amazon’s QA team let as much get through as ArenaNet’s, customers would be griping left and right about being overcharged, receiving the wrong items, etc. simply because the site was made “more flashy” or new items were added to the site.

That isn’t really the most appropriate analogy, you can’t compare videogame development with website development. Of all the MMOs I’ve played, I’d say GW2 is one of the most bug-free at launch, and probably has the best class balance as well, if only because skill factors so highly into GW2 combat mechanics.

Legendary Bows - Awful

It only seems fair for Anet to cater to the minority of players that might prefer rainbows and unicorns to steel and flame, and cuteness aside the effect looks awesome.

The problem is that then they should’ve given the option to do so with all weapon types. Not just doom a few like Shortbow and Mace into being the “joke Legendaries”. Warriors who like Mace are forever going to look on people with the other Legendaries in envy.

Oh I totally agree with that, but as they decided to kick the game off with only 1 legendary per weapon type this was inevitable. It doesn’t bother me though because you don’t get any advantage from a legendary in terms of stats, so you aren’t forced to equip an item you don’t like. There are plenty of cool looking exotics with the same stats.

Anyway, I’d rather they focused on all the various bugs and issues with the classes before worrying about legendaries and other fruitiness. Frankly I’d get more out of permanent pet names than new weapons and friggin quaggan backpacks.

Kudzu is hardly a ‘joke’ legendary, it’s a perfect match for my Sylvari ranger and I wouldn’t consider any other option. Nature sprouting at my footsteps is exactly what my ranger represents to me.

The Dreamer doesn’t bother me at all either, to be honest. It only seems fair for Anet to cater to the minority of players that might prefer rainbows and unicorns to steel and flame, and cuteness aside the effect looks awesome. If it shot flaming rockdogs instead of rainbow unicorns everyone would want one.

Anyway, hopefully they’ll be releasing new legendaries soon so we can have multiple options per weapon type.

What’s the general consensus on which of these is more profitable in the long run? I’ve heard a lot of people suggest the gilded infusion pays more, but no matter where I go I seem to make a lot more gold out of drops than straight-up coins. I imagine it depends to some extent on where you’re playing and what you’re killing, but I do a bit of everything so it’s tough to say where I spend the most time.

Vivec's Ranger WvW Build!

Daemon.4295

You don’t have 15pts in WS for the protection on dodge, or even 5pts for the 50% endurance regen, to me those are must haves for basic survival. You also have no mobility skills for when things go badly. You either win with the group, die with the group, or die without the group, so you better hope you have a good group. This is the kind of build that gives rangers a bad name. If you enjoy it thats fine, but you’re leading newbies astray by posting it here.

Edit: Spirits without any spirit traits, and no defensive utilities or stunbreaker.

“(This build is made for group/guild WvW play, and is not recommended for SPvP or solo play. Please recognize this when posting your critiques and comments)” – duly recognized.

I tried not to be as harsh about it as the OP clearly put a lot of effort in, but yes these builds that haven’t been thought through well give bad advice to new players and make us seem weaker than we really are. Unlike other ‘easy-mode’ classes, rangers have to be played really well to be effective.

See this thread for a discussion on the importance of endurance regen and quickness. if your build doesn’t have these, then unless you have a very good reason you should probably refrain from posting it.

Rangers skipped over again....

They need to make the longbow’s #1 fire rate faster or increase its damage or something. Honestly, the Mesmer’s greatsword is a better ranged weapon, and they’re not even advertised as a ranged class. That very fact alone should be a big, flashing sign saying, “Something about this is seriously kittened up.” Really, ANet? Really?

….the mesmer has only one melee weapon. The ranger has two.

The only reason mesmer greatsword works is because of the phantasm and mesmer stealth allowing him to recreate distance.

Other than that, the mesmer’s greatsword autoattack is just as bad. It’s equally ranged cap, and it’s a long channel relative to other autoattacks like thief shortbow or warrior rifle.

And next patch is a beam….

Our arrows hit infinite amount of targets, their beam hits 3 total.

This is done with a trait that few even consider getting because of the other options.
It’s very poorly designed and can only work if you target a player in the back.
Now does it not have a target cap? I find that unlikely, but I’ve never tried to hit more than 2 or 3 people with it.

Actually that trait is fundamental and one of the very best traits we have. Anyone that uses bows for damage should try to trait Piercing Arrows if at all possible, it’s effectively a damage multiplier. In PvE it’s essential, though it’s considerably harder to line up your opponents in PvP.

“The trait -is- fine though, 3 condis every 10s? With the utility that’s 4 every 10s, that’s a TON of reliable condi transfer and as long as you’re not using a cat or bird the pet will live through it for 15s, you know, before you swap the pet to wipe the slate clean?”

Wait, why should we have to swap pets to get true condition removal on par with other classes? We have to do so much more to get what others get passively (and also have the opportunity to convert condi into boons, and transfer boons to other players like other classes get) and hinder ourselves in other areas while doing so (you know, wearing a condition signet instead of the other useful utilities because we have no traited TRUE removal of condition and using a heal that isn’t meant for 1on1 play at all and has a large cooldown). I’m tired of hearing these workarounds like using bear pet and protect me , popping condi signet and switching pets, or simply switching pets. How about just give us condition removal on part with other classes? How about that?

I’m tired of hearing people complain about how we don’t have the condition manipulation and control of a necromancer, WE ARE NOT NECROMANCERS, we, nor any other prof, has the ability to manipulate conditions to the extent of a necromancer, if you want that sort of thing PLAY A NECRO. Guardians can come -close- to purging conditions, but again, that’s their thing, they have support even when offensive.

We have SUPERIOR condition removal to most profs, thieves, warriors, mesmers, and engineers without a very specific trait build, do not have very good condition removal, rangers can get a persistent 4 conditions removed every 10s and not to mention we have a heal that drops a condition every 3 seconds while we stand in it. We are not in a bad spot when it comes to condition problems.

And if you -refuse- to use those things just bring sigil of purity, and a lot of crit and maybe even consider Runes of Melandru if they’re still that big of a problem.

Stop complaining you’re not a necromancer, and either play a necromancer, or learn to deal with it as a ranger.

PS: We have an elite that can remove ALL conditions from ALL allies as well as rez ALL DOWNED ALLIES 3 times in 60s.

Whaaat? All you have to do is check the wiki to realize Rangers have dismal condition removal. No one wants to compete with a necro or guardian, but the other classes have equal or better condition removal without killing their core game mechanic in the process (i.e. pets). Healing Spring is awesome, one of the best group heals in the game and a great condition wipe, but other than that we have limited options and they all hurt our pet. All they’d have to do to fix this IMO is apply the wipe to your pet as well, rather than transferring to it.

The problem with the greatsword isn’t just Maul. A buff will help, but the fact is that the greatsword autoattack did lower damage than shortsword, while being a slower chain. It’s just really bad damage, and on top of that the greatsword has no cripple other than blowing your counterblade, so it’s very easy to kite a greatsword ranger.

This, exactly. I don’t know why they’re buffing maul again when the real problem is the low low damage on GS1. I don’t agree that it’s easy to kite a GS user, quite the contrary, it’s really hard to get away from Swoop, you have the cripple on GS4, and interrupt/daze on GS5. It just needs more damage, simple as that.

Regarding LB, I stick with my comment that it needs an immobilize like all other longbows (Warrior) and rifles (Engi and Warrior). That distance penalty is a killer when you have no way of keeping opponents from closing the gap.

@OP: Didn’t you already post this build? I remember this GC setup with no endurance regen really well, it’s a pretty significant flaw. I don’t see how you can argue that sharpened edges is better than natural vigor, particularly with no condition damage.

They talk about all the bugs necros have
they talk about engineers for like 10 minutes
they talk about eles and the nerfs they need
they talk about mesmers at length

They get to rangers…and spend 1 minute talking about how pets in fractals will benefit from your agony resistance…and how great sword needs a buff.

WHAT ABOUT SPIRITS
WHAT ABOUT LONG BOW
WHAT ABOUT OFFHAND AXE
WHAT ABOUT PET PATHING
WHAT ABOUT PET ABILITY DELAY
WHAT ABOUT THAT kitten SB NERF THAT WAS A “GRAPHIC FIX”

The state of the game today was nothing but proof that they don’t care about Rangers at all…

They buffed offhand axe before and I think, at least, it’s awesome in PvE since I had already been using it in nearly every dungeon. I do agree that GS needs a boost in DPS and I’m really happy to hear that.

Keep in mind that just because they ran out of time in this talk doesn’t mean they aren’t working on it. Ranger pet mechanics is a complicated, difficult issue and it’s just fine that it isn’t always discussed.

Everyone: relax!

Big ranger change 1: BIG nerf to our ONLY good damage weapon, the short bow. They said it wasn’t even a buff.

Big ranger change 2: GS gets buffed…….a weapon NOBODY was asking to get buffed

Big ranger change 3: Now we get GS buffed again, and pet agony resistance?

Sorry, but they’re totally ignoring rangers. I mean TOTALLY! Not only do they skip us in EVERY patch, but they refuse to ever talk about us. We’ve been saying “relax” for 7 months now and it’s STILL not fixed…..so no, we shouldn’t relax. We should all roll Ele, Anet obviously wants us to play them.

This isn’t true at all, the two weapons complained about the most are Longbow and Greatsword, with the exception of the Sword root bug. I think it makes perfect sense for Anet to be buffing the Greatsword.

Ranger damage comes through traps and (theoretically) pets, it just wasn’t designed for direct damage. That’s the real problem with longbow and greatsword to me, they don’t synergize with the ranger’s only real strong point (condition damage) and they just don’t hit hard enough to represent a valid alternative.

If they want to make the longbow a more viable option, they need to up the damage on LB1 and implement a brief immobilize. Many have been asking to get rid of that dang distance penalty since release, and if they just added a 2 sec snare to LB3 we would be able to actually land barrage, rapid fire, and autoattack. This is really essential for long range damage, Warriors and Engis have an immobilize on their rifles and longbows, why don’t we?

Earth will probably give you the most additional damage, if that’s what you’re after I’d go Earth/Force on your main set and Earth/Battle on your secondary. The only downside to Earth is the bleedcap in PvE group play.

You didn’t mention what this is for though, if it’s wvw you could use fire sigil instead of earth on axe. If it’s spvp, you might throw in some leeching or chilling. Just remember not to use two of the same sigil type at a time (on-crit, on kill, on swap).

IMO shared anguish and hide in plain sight are our most valuable traits.

Natural Vigor is also very useful . . . also been able to use “Soften the Fall” on defensive moments at gates in WvW – drop on them to immobilize so someone can drop area effects on the now-unmoving people.

I never thought of that, that’s a good idea. RaO + SoS/Protect Me and you won’t even take damage, so long as no one strips your stability buff. There’s a tip for the Ranger guild, one guy leaps off the wall for the CC, and everyone else gets ready to rain down massive AoE barrage

Best sigils for trap ranger

That poison trap is total waste. Spike trap is kinda GG tho.

But the viper nest has shorter cooldown and does more damage than the spike trap. ( according to wiki )
If I have two sigils that have cooldown and on different weapon sets , can I use both of them without waiting their cooldown to end ? ( battle on sword/torch , fire on axe/dagger.)

Poison also decreases healing effects by 33%, which is a big plus in sPvP. It’s always hard to choose which traps to leave out, they’re all great. Chill is excellent as well, gotta love that 66% cooldown increase.

Natural Vigor
Wilderness Survival adept minor (5 pts)
+ 50% Endurance regeneration

Zephyr’s Speed
Beastmastery adept minor (5 points)
2 secs quickness on pet swap

These two traits are just beast, they’re of paramount importance to all rangers and I don’t think any build can afford to do without them. No matter what or where you play, 5 points should always be invested into WS and BM.

I’m posting this because I keep coming across builds that neglect one of these traits. If you’re new to the Ranger class you should note the importance of these two minors, but if you’ve been around for a while I’d be curious to hear your logic behind not picking these up. The only thing I can really think of is Master’s Bond conflicting with Zephyr’s Speed. Anyone care to comment?

TL;DR – All ranger builds need 5 points in WS and BM for endurance regen and quickness

Best sigils for trap ranger

in Ranger

Daemon.4295

Sigil of Earth is probably the most common option for this type of build due to the high precision and condition damage, you’ll get nice and consistent additional bleeds. You will definitely do well with on-crit sigils in any case, some other options worth trying out are leeching, might, and chill.

I don’t personally like condition duration sigils as so much is lost in rounding, if you want to use these make sure that you’re actually getting the extra ticks.

PS: You need 5 points in WS for the extra dodges, I suggest you move them from Nature Magic.

LOL Did they really think that was overpowered? /facepalm

Removing all conditions on a 25 second (untraited) cooldown? I don’t know of any other class which has that much removal in a single skill.

Why would that matter in the long run there are plenty of design differences (skills/traits/etc) between the professions that are not balanced against what the other profession have/can do?

It isn’t true anyway, other classes can transfer all conditions, heal off them, or convert them to boons.

Vivec's Glass Cannon Tournament Build!

Sounds more like theorycrafting than practical experience to me, IME it’s difficult to stand still perched somewhere in spvp. I tried sniper-lb with various setups, but opponents close the gap too easily between gap closers, stuns, and pulls. Standing still in spvp usually means death anyway, the gw2 combat mechanics are built around mobility.

As an aside, you need 5 points in WS for the endurance regen. That’s pretty elemantary, even newer players should know that all ranger builds start from a 0/0/5/0/5. I’d suggest you rethink your choice of traits as well, as a sniper you really want 20% cooldown reduction for survival skills (QZ) and bow skills. Traps aren’t very effective without condition damage, I’d drop the trap traits and slot muddy terrain instead. Traited SoS is pretty much a must have for a GC in spvp, I’d slot MT, SoS, QZ, and entangle (or RaO for stability if you’re getting constantly yanked from your sniper nest).

50% increased damage on one attack is nothing to get excited about, it’s basically weaker than a single crit. Active effects for the majority of ranger signets are really poor.

Um, no? 50% increased damage is a crit (with 0 crit dmg) that can then crit… it’s something that you could get very excited about, not to mention that it’s pretty much the only signet we have that has an even remotely reasonable CD>

I must be slow to excite, +50% to ONE attack is really weak for a signet active, in my book. The fact you need a 30 point grandmaster to get it at all is just comical. I pop blind and leech on the equivalent signet on my other toons, but it doesn’t seem worth it on ranger.

This is identical to a thread posted just a few days ago. Turn off auto-target (not auto-attack), it will make your life much easier with various weapons (Sword, Greatsword, Horn). Auto-target limits the utility you can get out of certain weapon skills, by turning it off you can use gap closers such as GS3 and Sword2 as excellent escape mechanisms, or just to fly across the map (GS3 + warhorn).

I managed to get myself some high toughness armor for that new Daze build i’m working on.

PVT gear + Cava Jewelry + Knights Jewels.

I’m having trouble against bunker builds (like mesmer’s with the setup) and Guardians are tough as hell also, only managed to defeat the guy once in a duel, and I think he figured out what I was doing and switch to anti daze abilities

I’m thinking i will have to modify the talent some

Something like

0/30/5/5/30

My cat pet is just dying so easily without a second source of healing, and I think you need at least one DPS pet.

How does a daze build work on ranger?? There aren’t enough daze options, did you lose a bet and have to trait moment of clarity? :p

Heh, I love the concept behind that skill.

What is the point of fear?

in Necromancer

Posted by: Daemon.4295

Daemon.4295

Fear is one of those effects that radically change between PVE and PVP, without having any actual mechanical change.

1. For some reason, having your character run in a specific direction for a second or two is more annoying than having them launched thru the air or knocked over.

2. Mobs can’t fall off ledges, toons can.

I disagree, I find knockdowns and launches more annoying. When I get feared I feel like it’s just a temporary lull in my dps, when I get knocked down or launched I feel like I’m about to take heavy damage. In my experience, the form of CC that throws opponents the most is pull, it totally messes up their attack strategy and tends to disorient them.

IMO fear is just an excellent interrupt, though I admit I haven’t really experimented with builds that take full advantage of traited fear damage.

For LB users
In WvW what stops someone from simply moving out of range if a ranger is firing on them from max range, then using their speed/leap skills to come after you and close the distance.

Is the max range LB skill mostly used during large battles to fire on someone at a not paying attention?

WvW combat isn’t that straightforward, most of the time your opponent is getting attacked by multiple players and is likely to concentrate on that thief or warrior in his face, allowing you to keep up ranged damage on him as he attempts to deal with melee. If he does come after you you have the skills to keep him at bay, namely longbow knockback and entangle/muddy terrain.

For PVE I have doing full glass cannon-

Zerker stats with full ruby accessories, and as you say, all glass, not so much cannon.

I am now after a build that will give the BEST utility value to my group, I want to be appreciated and make a difference in dungeons, in particular high lvl fotms, on my ranger. I thought full glass cannon and try to contribute with max DPS would be best but I’m just not feeling it.

Crazy I know, but I am seeing this class as a real challenge that I wanna overcome.

Anyone got any effective builds for Fotm 40-50?

If utility in dungeons and fractals is what you’re after then a trap build is your best bet. Strong, sustained damage from traps, high survivability, and combo fields.

It depends what you do in WvW. GC ranger is great for zerging, but poor for roaming. 2v1s are really tough because you have zero AoE in that scenario, which is why I always roam with a greatsword. GS3 is one of the best escape mechanisms in the game. Still, if you want to do a lot of roaming with a ranger, a SB/trap build is probably best.
