Saving Pet Names

Daemon.4295

I would even settle for one name that was assigned to all my pets.

This would work, this could easily be done I would think.

Something simple that would make a lot of Rangers Happier. Not too much to ask I don’t think.

I’d rather have 1 or 2 names only, for my favorite pets. I wish they would at least let me name the pet I was born with, it’s awful seeing “Juvenile Fern Hound” on my lifelong companion

Signets

Daemon.4295

Passive effects should definitely be traded off when you activate a signet, it’s just that our actives are all really, really poor unless you’re willing to put 30 points in marksmanship. I really think they should all affect you and your pet by default.

I have no illusions of Anet changing these anytime soon, but here’s how I would modify the active abilities:

Signet of Stone: Affects you and your pet (and I’d still trade it for the warrior’s 5s every 90)
Signet of Renewal: Your pet pulls all conditions from nearby allies to itself, each condition is converted into a random boon
Signet of the Wild: Affects you and your pet (maybe drop the added damage if it’s considered OP)
Signet of the Hunt (the worst of all, it’s basically a free crit for your pet): You and your pet gain Camouflage for 3 seconds (if this encroaches too much on thief skills, substitute with cripple or chill to nearby enemies)

Rolling conditional traps build with SB/GS
The bags are raining.

SB + positioning + Piercing Arrows + Traps + Entangle = annahilating AOE for zergs.
And you are still very survivable with all of it.

Rangers are amazing for wvw. Barrage is not your only skill…

Yeah, does anyone else have as many CCs as we do? In WvW I have Entangle (AoE), Muddy terrain (AoE), and Spike Trap (mini-AoE) on my bar, plus QZ for Barrage. Nothing kills faster in WvW than immobilize and cripple.

I guess I’d agree that other classes have an advantage in roaming and 1v1, but on my server I seem to spend the majority of my time either zerging, or defending against zergs, and rangers are great for that.

Advice for condition damage gear

in Ranger

Posted by: Daemon.4295

Daemon.4295

I’m considering re-speccing to a SB/trapper build in PVE. Much as I love my glass cannon ranger in WvW, as I climb through fractals levels I’m starting to need the extra survivability.

To those of you who run SB/trap builds, how would you suggest I gear up? It seems that a mix of Cnd/Pwr/Vit and Cnd/Prec/Tough is my best bet to maximize weapon and condition damage, but I’m not sure it’s the best defensive option. I’m also considering a full set of Cnd/Prec/Tough with runes of the undead for +5% Toughness to Condition Damage. By my calculations that should put me around 50% crit chance, a decent rate for on-crit sigils.

Any advice appreciated!

One could also use sword skill 2, de-select target (when autotarget is turned of) turn the other way and press second part of the skill to jump away even further…

Correct. Now correct me if I’m wrong but unless you have autotargeting turned off under settings, Monarch’s Leap will go into an enemy (if one is within range), regardless of whether you one have one targeted.

Also, note that this is difficult to do without custom keybindings-including a binding for ‘about face’. I strongly recommend all rangers turn off autoattack in pvp, turn off autotargeting, and use custom keybindings with the goal of minimizing the required motion of the hand to complete essential tasks.

Yeah I think you’re right it will go into an enemy.

“About face” is so useful, I think if I had any trouble using it manually myself I’d bind a macro to my keyboard to allow me to about face before leaping away, it’s a very powerful ability. I just wish there was another keybind for “clear target” other than the escape key, I did bind that to a better key on my Nostro’ pad but if I hit it too much I get the game menu, ha!

You can double click on empty ground to de-select target. I just found that out myself the other day in this forum

PS: I bound about-face to my ‘C’ key, that’s how useful it is for me!

I disagree, rangers can be very useful at siege and defense. Barrage keeps defenders moving on the walls, and keep attackers away from the gates. I know there’s no excuse for dying in a red circle, but it’s surprising how many attackers a glass cannon ranger will drop with quickened barrage. With Eagle Eye, you can safely fire away at defenses from long range, and you can force attackers further back than they can hit the gates from at max range. With guard, you can send your pet out to attack siege weapons in stealth, or simply distract the zerg as it often takes them a while to realize where the damage is coming from. Muddy terrain and other CCs are fantastic for freezing all those defenders that think they can jump off the wall for a few quick hits. I really enjoy playing my Ranger in WvW.

-Little Ranger Tips-

Great thread! I look forward to picking up some pointers here myself

Lick Wounds
If your pet is in combat when you’re downed, swap your pet out as soon Lick Wounds is off cooldown. Your second pet will appear right next to your corpse , ready for res. A quick Wolf Howl can also scare your opponents off a stomp.

Knockdowns on Demand
Canines will usually execute their knockdown as soon as they go into combat. Pull your canine out with F3, and send him in with F1 once his leap skill is off cooldown for an easy knockdown.

Dealing with Thieves
Thieves are a pesky bunch in PvP, the best way to deal with them is to get them to blow their initial burst and initiative with skills like traited Signet of Stone (6 seconds of invulnerability) or Protect Me. Expect a backstab when you see them stealth in front of you, drop traps at your feet and try to time a dodge accordingly. If you have a longbow on you, keep in mind that LB2 (Rapid Fire) will track a stealthed opponent if you target them before they pop stealth.

Use your combo fields
Rangers have an excellent array of combo fields, between fire trap, ice trap, torch, healing spring, and poison from pets. Use these as often as possible in dungeons and other group fights, remember you can splash healing and regeneration around your party with healing spring.

Extra long range
Your arrows will connect beyond their maximum range, if fired towards a targeted opponent. With Eagle Eye, this can give you super long range shots with your longbow, allowing you to hit certain dungeon bosses from positions of safety.

Meat shield
Some boss encounters involve constant projectile dodging. These are ideal situations for a meat shield, set a bear in front of you in defensive mode and he will absorb the projectiles for you as you fire away.

Autotarget is NOT your friend!
Turning off autotarget will turn GS3 and Sword2 into excellent escape mechanisms, as they would otherwise fling you towards the closest enemy. If you don’t know how to use Sword2 as an escape, the trick is to hop out of combat with the first attack, rotate 180 degrees, and hit sword 2 again for a double-leap away from your opponent.

Consider your racial skills
Certain racial skills can provide benefits you might not have considered. Asura Pain Inverter can be used in conjunction with Protect Me or Signet of Stone to completely reverse damage taken from spike attacks. Sylvari Seed Turrets can “tank” for you as they draw aggro from mobs, and often cause them to waste special abilities like CCs. This skill also gives you brief invulnerability as you cast, so a good trick for Sylvari rangers is to drop healing spring and then Seed Turret in quick succession.

Immobilize is your most powerful skill in WvW
Nothing will damage your opponents in WvW more than your allies! Muddy terrain, ice trap, entangle, spike trap, axe chill, and canine knockdowns are all excellent ways to slow down your opponent long enough for the pack to tear him up. Muddy terrain in front of keep entrances will cause the death of many a brave fool.

EDIT: Corrected “Auto-attack” to “Auto-target” in point 7. Thanks for pointing that out Solandri!

Probably not, like any dungeon it is designed for five players, I doubt you could get to the final battle in less than four players (maybe three if you’re good and very patient).

Are you using gw2lfg.com ? If not, this will make the world of difference in finding a group for any dungeon, it only took me two tries to find a full Zhaitan party.

PS: If you are really really stuck, just ask on the forum and I’m sure people would be happy to help you out.

I appreciate your input and we actually did get a group together at one point.

First, we had to spend I don’t know how long just to secure the area. Then after I don’t know how long we got everybody in a group.

After a few afks and getting some replacements for drops we finally enter the dungeon.

We get through to the first boss but our group can’t drop him. We get him down to near half health but then the boss heals himself back up. This goes on for about 30 minutes. So I ask another player why won’t this boss die and he says ‘we don’t have enough DPS’. I think to myself ‘Holy Trinity’.

I look at the clock and realize we have spent 2 hours now trying to do this last part of the personal storyline and we are now failing at the first boss mob (for whatever reason) so we left to eat dinner and never return.

Yeah, I hate when dungeon entrances are contested. But definitely use gw2lfg.com , soooo much faster than trying to shout for a group as shouting is restricted to one map on one server. Apparently Anet will be integrating a similar functionality some time soon.

PS: the reason why you lost that battle is that the boss eats those grubs or whatever they are to heal. You need to take out the grubs as quickly as possible.

If you think 3 bugs it’s because you have autotargeting on in settings. If you turn that off you can swoop without automatically targeting an enemy.

If you’re not doing LB/GS wvw build, or a skirmishing/daze build—if you struggle timing interupts, then practice with both GS and SB in PvE for a while.

You’ll get the hang of it. It’s a great weapon once you get the right build and the right motion on the field.

That’s what I figure is going on. Autotarget will cause you to swoop at your target, or the closest enemy in range if none are selected (like other weapon skills). Turn off autotarget and you will always be able to swoop away cleanly, so long as you remember to cancel your target

Same old story, expect the same old posts. People saying Rangers are fine and dandy as they still don’t understand that the real problems are all in PvP and not PvE, people saying they kill lots of other players in WvW (where you’re up against weaker players), people saying they rock in sPvP just to boast on the forums.

Lots of classes have issues, Rangers are the only class with broken core mechanics in PvP (damage from pets and projectiles not functioning as intended). The class doesn’t need minor tweaks, it needs urgent fixing. In PvE it needs minor tweaks like any other class (some non-sensical or useless traits, pets dying too easily in dungeons).

You’re kidding, right? You rolled an engi for any length of time?

Talk about broken

I’m not saying there aren’t problems, because that’s readily obvious to any but the purposefully dense, but Rangers aren’t the only class that’s been screwed in the core mechanics department.

I can’t speak for Engineers, never rolled one and not sure what their main problems are (although I’m sure they have them). But to be on a par with rangers, Engi turrets and grenades would have to miss moving players and their bullets would have to consistently miss their targets.

All I’ve ever tried to argue was that the gap between rangers and any other profession (if it exists at all) is small enough such that a player’s skill can cross it. All of the professions are comparable. Comparable is the key word. After that, it’s up to the player’s coordination and understanding of the game.

This is exactly what we’re arguing, that it takes superior player skill to cross the ranger’s performance gap. In PvE and WvW this is annoying at most, but in competitive sPvP and tournaments it kills the class. sPvP is all about the numbers, players don’t want to run with (or group with) a profession that significantly lowers their success rate. The only reason why you don’t see mass raging is that unlike WvW, you can sPvP with a level 1 alt.

No, it didn’t supposedly “fix” them, it supposedly helped.

I made some changes to improve pets hitting moving targets in this upcoming build. I wouldn’t expect those changes to light the world on fire, but they have improved. There is more to be done in this area still but feedback on how much this upcoming change helped, once it is in, would be great.

Do you guys sPvP your rangers? Maybe it’s just luck, build, playstyle, or the fact that I’m a low level sPvP pug, but I find Warriors (along with Engineers) to be the easiest class to beat. Sure, burst is beast, but you have to land it of course. Rangers have a bunch of useful evades and escapes, and can keep up consistent condition damage throughout a fight.

I do however suspect that a lot of newbish players pick warrior, maybe at higher level sPvP I’d find I do better against other classes.

Rangers have one thing that no other class has, a 15 second water field that provides regeneration and condition removal. If you guys know anything about combos (I do hope you do)you can have other classes do blast finishers into your healing spring to perform AoE heals and this can be crucial in fights where your team just to a wallop to the face.

I don’t know about your experiences, but I find that other players rarely take advantage of all the fields I throw down in dungeons. I usually run with fire trap, ice trap, and healing spring, and even when I tell them to use my fields before going in they often forget completely.

WvW role for a GS ranger?

The GS has a very specific role for me in WvW, it’s a fantastic escape mechanism. I run full berserker with LB/GS in WvW, and when I get swarmed I swoop away with GS3. I hardly ever die thanks to this skill, when I do it’s always because I either stick around longer than I know I should, or because I forget to cancel my target and swoop at him instead of away from him. I don’t use it for anything else though, can’t even remember the last time I actually hit someone with hit.

I don’t think there’s anything necessarily bad about offhand axe, it’s just that warhorn is great, and apparently torch is good too for condition damage and combo fields (I never use it myself just ‘cause I don’t like the idea of fighting with a torch). If more rangers ran with two dual-wield setups as you do, you’d probably see offhand axe a lot more often.

In my opinion, the reason why people think it is broken is because it has one of the steepest learning curves in the game when it comes to dungeons or WvW. The reason is because ANET, rather than gimp pets by giving them AI (see necros), they give us the control. We are responsible for making the pet make good decisions. So now you have to control two characters.

No, this is why people think the profession is broken:

How can there not be a general consensus on these issues after seeing stuff like this?

I think he means that he wants to slot the F2 with one of the basic pet skills, which you can’t do. Your pet automatically uses his basic skills (eg. the canine leap), the only skill you can use on command is the fixed F2 skill.

Controlling the pet’s basic skills is more complex, you have to recall them to your side with F3 and send them in to attack with F1 once their basic skill is off cooldown and they will usually execute that skill first. If you just leave them in attack mode, they will execute those skills as and when they are off cooldown. (obviously this info is for the OP, not you Vox )

Is that what you were asking, OP? If not, sorry for misunderstanding you.

I don’t think you can really prioritize which problem is more of an issue compared to the other because it is all relative the player. For instance, I hardly ever do an sort of PvP so those problems don’t matter much to me and to the other players who PvE as much as I do. On the other hand, PvP players would see them as major issues while the PvE ones not so much. The only common issue I can see is probably utility skills that are just broken, e.g. spirits. So in any case those should take priority over anything according to your approach.

I absolutely think you can prioritize the problems, and here’s why. The broken mechanics in PvP actually affect the outcome of your battles, while the PvE issues at most affect the total time spend to complete a dungeon (marginally, and that’s if you’re a beastmaster that has to pull most of the weight in your group). I personally have never experienced any sort of flak from a dungeon party for being a ranger, and certainly have never seen a group wipe because of a dead pet.

People tend to complain about the issues they live the most of course, but each issue has a different level of gravity so let’s try to be objective. Yes, lack of agony resistance for pets is just silly and needs to be addressed, but I don’t think we can honestly say that the ranger is any worse off in PvE overall than other classes. In PvP, on the other hand, we’re rock bottom with major, game-breaking bugs.

Guys, aside from the silly lack of agony resistance in fractals, pets dying in dungeons is NOT THAT BIG A DEAL! If you’re having trouble micromanaging them with F1 and F3 just put them on defensive mode and use them for buffing, you’ll contribute to your group just fine. People continuously bringing this up detracts attention from the Ranger’s major issues, which are pets and arrows not connecting with their targets in PvP.

Personally I think both of those points are issues, one which will effect one type of person more than another depending on what they play more.

If you put your pet away though, you ARE bringing down your DPS, even if you’re not BM spec (which lets face it, is pointless using in high level fractals because your pet just isn’t used much).

Yes, but the difference is that while you can perfectly well do a dungeon with lower DPS (basically it’s more or less like taking a lvl 75 character into a 5 man dungeon instead of a lvl 80 character), you have serious problems facing other players in PvP. Statistically speaking, the final outcome of a dungeon run is not affected anywhere near as much as the final outcome of an sPvP match.

Yeah, for me PVP issues are more important but that doesn’t mean that I don’t understand issues for players that are more focused on PVE.

Of course, you’re right, but I think our PvE issues are pretty much on par with those experienced by other classes, while in PvP we definitely got the short end of the stick. I actually do far far more PvE than sPvP or WvW, I’d say in the past month I’ve spent well over 80% of my time in dungeons, fractals, and general PvE, if not 90%. PvE issues affect me more day to day, but I realize that the PvP problems are more urgent and should take priority in the devs’ backlog of necessary fixes.

Human Bias

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I find the psychology behind this tendency to roll humans fascinating. They have always been my least favorite race in practically any game, fantasy or sci-fi. I just find them intensely boring, plus they are always the sort of ‘neutral ground’ in every game.

With regards to being privileged by Arenanet, I just think it’s a lot easier for them to design for humans than the other classes, which are very particular. Humans can pull off just about any outfit, plus they share the same basic body structure as Norn so the models immediately work for both races. Sylvari get the short end of the stick because they just look awful in any human apparel.

Player homes are a fantastic idea, there is so much you can do with this. Furniture and accessories should be very costly to craft / buy, making this a whole extra dimension for end-game further down the road. Arenanet could really drive gem store purchases with this.

Someone mentioned using player home instances as PvP battle grounds, and I think that’s just an amazing idea. The first thing that springs to mind is of course guild owned keeps and camps in WvW. I’d much rather be invading some Dragonzur guild’s keep than the usual, generic, anonymous borderlands structure.

Alternatively, you could imagine instanced guild clashes, in which guilds invade each others’ keeps in sPvP style match-ups. Anet could create a few different castle set-ups (maps) that guilds could choose from and personalize to some extent. To keep it simple, maybe initially they’d just be maps for hosted tournaments, and a few years down the road Anet could consider implementing new Guild vs Guild gameplay mechanics.

You are not understanding the issue. Yes everyone can find a group, sooner or later. The issue is that in a PERSONAL story line, no group should EVER be required. There is no sense of personal achievement in a forced group.

Is that the OP’s issue, or your issue? There are at least three other open posts on this, I understand the point being made and agree with it (to a certain extent), although it’s nothing I’d get my panties tied up in a knot over. In this particular thread, the OP mentions the difficulty he had in finding a group to complete personal story with his son. I am replying directly to the OP on this point trying to be helpful, not on issues raised in other threads. Sheesh.

This has been mentioned time and time again, and we’ve never gotten a response from ArenaNet on the subject so it would be absurd to face a ban over this. I’ve never tried it myself, but I wouldn’t consider this an exploit and I’d have no problem sending my pet into a keep with Guard. All the more so because I use birds.

Looking for input on my build

Daemon.4295

Hello was just looking for thoughts on my ranger build. I created this yesterday and was doing quite well with it. I feel my power might be too low. I was looking for a balance with survivability and decent dmg. Thoughts and comments appreciated. This is meant for the que based pvp not WvWvW. Thanks again! I am new to ranger as well only been playing it for less than a week, but having a blast with it!

Ranger Longbow Buff!?

in Ranger

Posted by: Daemon.4295

Daemon.4295

I thought the December update specifically sped up our LB? At least I recall a thread in which Mr Peters said that it was getting buffed.

Projectile speed was marginally increased on both the shortbow and longbow, has nothing to do with attack speed. You are still able to side step the arrow. You’re still getting a lot of missed/obstructed shots.

Dps technically was not affected by the December patch. As the previous poster says, projectile speed was affected in order to help solve the issue of arrows missing their targets in PvP. The longbow still fires the same number of arrows over time, you won’t notice any difference against mobs or a dummy, for example.

I didn’t mind grouping up for the final story. I found some nice people to run it with.

I was very disappointed that my character wasn’t in the cutscenes of this final dramatic mission, though. It made me feel like an NPC, just silently tagging along.

+1 to that!! That was a big disappointment, made me feel like a tag-along in my own personal story. The Charr that ended up in the cutscenes was actually the only one in our party who had already been through it

First thing you intend to buy with Laurels?

The 20% gold infusion. I play dungeons alot and this would jump my money pile greatly.

And nothing to put it in? It’s not a versatile infusion, so it can currently only be slotted into ascended amulets with a utility slot.

Class Specific Gear Boxes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Daemon.4295

Daemon.4295

Guys, seriously??

how is this another gamble…It’s GUARANTEED something rare, or exotic, and specifically something your class can use

this is as nice as it gets for gearing my many alts, especially since i dont often do dungeons so my source of exotics is crafting/map exploration(which is almost NEVER something i need or what i’m looking for)

i literally cannot believe people can find something to complain about this

It takes 5 days to get the laurels you’ll need to take a shot at a random piece of lvl 78-80 gear. You don’t know the stats or the item, or the level. You might get the same rare lvl 78 pauldrons three times in a row, or you might get stats you don’t need, or you might get weapons you don’t use, etc. etc. etc. Alternatively, you can spend five days running dungeons to get exactly the gear you’re after, AND make a heap of gold in the process, saving those laurels for ascended amulets for your alts.

The only useful thing guaranteed to come out of that box is ectos, but even there I’d be better off salvaging after dungeon runs.
