Has PVP always been so manic?

in PvP

Dahkeus.8243

play how you like and how your comfortable and get good at it.

<never followed meta

but yes it is very manic thanks to people playing as mesmers, thieves and the like where half their gameplay is going invisible, throwing illusion effects at other players, or doing random, passive damage with minimal tells. I wish the spammy classes would go but we’re stuck with them. Brawling is infinitely more enjoyable to me.

Complete bullkitten. Shows how little you play mesmer/thief and has zero idea how the class works.

I am a mesmer main playing double range shatter(the meta). The only stealth I bring is decoy which I save for the most rough spot. The passive damage I can do would be even less than warrior’s auto heal. The burst damage I do(mirror blade+shatter) is just as telegraphed as any of your warriors’ big hit.

I am so tired of the random accusations of mesmers from people without even the basic knowledge. OP is a returning player. Please give him more constructive advice rather than throwing out all the bullkitten.

Take a breath and re-read his post. He used an “or”, not an “and”. He also didn’t say anything about you in particular, do there’s no need to be offended.

Judging by ur mentality OP, go greatsword + hammer traited 00626 with zerker amulet and pack runes. This works just fine. I made a 1v1 video about it, works to an extent in group fights as long as u watch your sorroundings and have an understanding of your opponents are capable of and how the fight evolves. A decent point roamer.

Yeah… you’re literally just spamming your buttons when they’re off CD. Not exactly play anyone should idolize. Whirlwind Attack only ticking once, using Earthshaker into his shelter and aegis and actually just plain missing it once (unless you swapped to hammer to use earthshaker as a gap closer… in which case lol), using rush at point blank a second after the guardian used his invuln, dodging nothing randomly…

So…where did this guy ask for your advice? Cuz I’m pretty sure what he was trying to do was give a good build option and a basic idea of how it works to someone who hasn’t played in a long time. You don’t need a pro to do that and if the build works without having to play it exactly perfectly then this just proves that his suggestion was spot on for the OP, despite your brash criticism.

But if you didn’t really have the intent of the post or the best interest of the OP in mind and only meant to be “that guy” who chips in just to cut someone else down…then mission accomplished, I guess. =/

@OP: I’d +1 this build suggestion. Also, give the game a bit more time as you get back into it. Then game will feel a lot less manic as you get a better understanding of what is going on.

Worst class of SPVP: Ranger

in PvP

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

Funny…I always found power ranger as one of the strongest builds for solo queue. It’s a build that people love to call “easy” since it doesn’t have a ton of skills like ele and can do big burst with rapid fire, but I still find that few players use it well since almost no one ever really knows how to disengage wisely. I think half of it is that most people forget they have a GS and only really use it as a last ditch to fight people that they can’t keep at a distance.

Yes. More blinds.

Awkward Controls?

Dahkeus.8243

Having been away playing other games I have to say, the movement/controls in this game feel very off. I guess I got used to it playing this for a while, but they’re slow and cumbersome compared to other games. Just not feeling fluid to me. Maybe it’s just me?

Hmm, I guess there’s a different feel for different people. Personally, I thought GW2 had some of the best, most intuitive controls/mechanics in any MMO I’ve played when I first started and I still feel that way today.

When I tried Rift, for example, I thought the controls mechanics were incredibly awkward, stiff, and cumbersome, but I know lots of people were fine with them.

Disturbing Itzel Event Chain

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

While the Itzel event change was a lot of fun from a gameplay perspective, I found the story rather disturbing, to the point I actually had to give up part way through because I couldn’t really stomach continuing.

So basically there’s another tribe of Hylek trying to convince the Itzel to change to a new religion. Now maybe there’s some context which would explain why this is apparently causing the Pact to have a royal freak out, but it certainly isn’t being presented in the game. In the game we’re running around launching unprovoked attacks of people merely for talking about the “wrong” religion, culminating in us desecrating a church and assassinating a religious figure in the middle of their worship services like The Pact’s suddenly turned into the Tyrian version of ISIL.

So… what’s up with that?

Well…most heart quests involving grawl revolve around killing them and desacrating their idols because they worship the wrong religion. Sadly, I don’t think this is a new concept for the game.

Dahkeus.8243

Yea, Revenant seems like a solid class, but I really didn’t enjoy it either.

Mace/Axe was nice for the leap and blast that allows for 100% swiftness, but there are two major points that kept me from enjoying it:

1) Ability animations/sounds were just way too over-the-top. Kinda feels like being stuck in an action scene from a Michael Bay movie.

2) The class feels very slow and reliant on cast times. I guess I’m just spoiled on my thief with this one, lol.

What are the Best Ways to Learn This Class?

in Thief

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

Here’s the priority I would suggest to learning the class:

1) Learn mobility and how to move through the maps. You can be a great help to winning a game for your team even if you can’t win a fight on a thief due to high mobility that allows you to decap.

2) Learn the teleport tricks and other nuances of thief teleport/sleath/blind mechanics. Here’s an old video, but most of it is still relevant:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUmrfBr1R5s

3) Watch this video:

4) Avoid medi guards.

Everything beyond that is pretty much just practice and learning enemy mechanics.

My thoughts on why thief wont get rifle.

in Thief

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

What the assassin had a lot of was poison, knockdown and blocks which the thief currently is very weak with.

Gotta disagree with you here. Thieves arguably have the most access to poison, arguably more than Rangers since two weapon sets give 100% up time. That and Rangers already have the Poison Master trait.

We don’t have knock downs, but there are plenty of stuns and dazes.

Blocks don’t make sense for a class that already has more active defense than anyone else (due to stealth, blinds, and evades).

I’m not completely sold on rifles for thieves yet, but if it’s not a rifle, then it’ll likely be a sword offhand duelist class or a mace offhand to be a more thug-ish specialization.

Great video. The fights you posted definitely prove your point.

If WvW seemed to really have any purpose or meaning, then I could see this as unfair, but since this is still a really weak build for sPvP and wouldn’t do much in a large-scale encounter, I can understand why it’s gone un-nerfed.

That being said, I see this as more of a problem with WvW than with the build itself.

Why do people NOT run meta?

in PvP

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

I usually run meta, but there are times when I don’t. Here’s my main reasoning for running non-meta:

Meta builds become meta not just because they are strong. They become meta because they are strong against what players are currently using.

For example, the shoutbow build is excellent against condi builds, but if you’re not running into a lot of that, then a hammer build can be better.

Also, consider that meta builds are generally rated for their effectiveness in an organized team environment. Running something like hammer/GS will be pretty mediocre there. However, when you solo queue, the mobility of the GS can make it more ideal since out rotating a less coordinated team and decapping undefended points can give your team a winning edge.

Most Efficient Solo PvP Role/Class

in PvP

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

I play all 8 classes regularly and most solo. 7 are close together. By far the best Win% has my Power Ranger, which is almost 20% more than any other.

I doubt that you are a master at all 8 classes and would wager that a good deal of your success is due to how easy Ranger is to pick up and play compared to other classes. Being able to deal great burst damage at range and having simple rotations allows for most to pickup the class and do ok in PVP.

Other classes require more practice/skill before you can achieve similar results.

Nah, power ranger is a really solid build for solo PvP. It’s not an issue of low skill cap. This is true, even of strong players.

in Warrior

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

Yea…ask Necros how well this game is suited for builds that revolve around sacrificing HP for power…

I think that this general design is just too unstable to balance. If you’re sacrificing HP, you have to get a really meaningful power gain to compete against other classes that don’t have such a cost and it’s just too easy to become a 1-shot gimmick class at that point. That may be fine for solo PvE games, but MMO PvP is a whole ’nuther beast.

Most Efficient Solo PvP Role/Class

in PvP

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

Let’s say I only solo in PvP and never form a team. Which role in your opinion gives the statistically highest chance of contributing to a win? This will influence which class I take.

Do I focus on:

1. Single Target Damage – but fail against bunkers who sit and soak it up

2. Roaming speed – to help unbalance fights quickly in different places

3. Bunker/Decap – push people off points, not die to any single person, but die to more than one individual. No damage.

4. Huge AoE – to apply pressure on as many people as possible.

Of course, we can also have hybrids who by definition won’t be the best at any single role. Which in your opinion are your best options?

Engis fit these criteria pretty well:
1) Single target damage – Well…they’re ok here. Not amazing, but good.

2) Roaming speed – They won’t match a mesmer, thief, or war with a GS, but with Speedy Kits, you easily get 100% swiftness with very little expense.

3) Few classes decap as well as a well played engi and cele/condi amulets allow you to be pretty tanky to bunk when needed as well.

4) Few classes can spam AoE like an engi.

If we start talking team PvP, then engis aren’t as obviously well equipped since team synergy easily offsets any weakness a class/build brings, but when you get into solo queueing, hybrid builds tend to really shine and few classes fit this as well as engis.

However, I’d say that shoutbow and medi guard are also great choices.

Immo is a soft CC which is condition, not a CC which can interrupt.

A soft CC is a CC. Just because something is a subgroup of a group does not exclude it from that group….

The problem here is in this game

CC is considered as something which you can use to interrupt people.

stop being so stubborn about it, this is what general GW2 use when they are talking about interrupts.

and a soft CC is a condition. They are both totally different things

You seem pretty intent on believing your own made-up definitions of those words, despite large evidence on the contrary. However, I do find it particularly amusing that you have decided to see conditions and CC as mutually exclusive.

The only way I would lose Longbow is if I didn’t need Cleansing Ire to survive. If ANet just remove Cleansing Ire, Warrior loses their meta status overnight.

That’s another problem, not to mention shouts and warhorn completely removed every condi-build out of meta. I don’t mind Warriors being tanky and supportive, Cleansing Ire does not bother me.

I do mind when Warriors are tanky, supportive and can strike with good damage and CC.

You’re talking about Shoutbow?

Shoutbow don’t have any stun/daze/CC. Shoutbow isn’t tanky or have good damage, its celestial.

It is, however, supportive, and mobile.

Pin Down.

The only time Cleansing Ire will ever get nerfed is when the balance of PvP will no longer be about condition spamming vs. condition cleansing.

Pin down isn’t a daze, knockback knockdown or a stun.

And your point? Last time I checked, it was still CC.

nope, it applys conditions

Really? Immobilize is a condition, but it’s also a CC. Same thing with Fear.

Just because it doesn’t have all the benefits of other CCs doesn’t mean it’s not a CC. I mean Daze can kick a heal, but it won’t stop an enemy from stepping away from a big burst of damage.

Anyways, to get back on point, I honestly think that one of two things needs to happen:
1) Cleansing Ire has the requirement of hitting an opponent with a burst skill to trigger reverted so that wars can cleanse condis even when blinded.
or
2) We need another reliable source of condi cleanse, and particularly one that doesn’t take up a utility slot.

Turning mending into a physical skill may make a physical skill build viable, which may address 2 to some extent, but I don’t see that really being a complete solution.

Since Merciless Hammer and Burst Mastery will be on the same trait slot, I personally think the hambow builds that lead to the CI nerf are themselves nerfed enough to justify reverting the CI nerf.

CC is when you DONT have control over your skills
With immob you can still do anything BUT walking..

You’re really just making up your own definition for CC at this point. Movement impairing abilities are CC. That’s why things like cripple and chill are called ‘soft CC’.

I’m still not going to pop it to get resistance for 6s (which can be ripped or converted).

If the goal is to make the skill active rather than passive, reduce the passive healing by 50% (or some number around there) and increase the active heal. You can make it conditional for skillful play like:

Suggestion 1
Passive: gain 150 health per second
Active: heal yourself for 4000, for 8 seconds, your next successful burst skill heals you for 5000, if it misses, you don’t receive the 5000 heal, (cleansing ire procs before the heal)

Suggestion 2
Passive: gain 150 health per second
Active: gain 800 health per second over the next 10s

Those are just a few suggestions, and both have counter-play. Feel free to list other suggestions below.

I thought they said they were reducing the passive heal from sig.

From Dulfy’s notes:
“Healing Signet regen is going to get lowered but you gain Resistance for 6s when you use it, making you immune to conditions.”
