Ranger Combination - SPVP

I’d actually discourage playing a thief, particularly with a LB ranger. There’s two main reasons for this:

1) A thief is best as a high mobility roamer that quickly takes advantage of any uncapped point and then leaves to the next place. This means you’ll either leave your GF alone a lot or you’ll not be playing your class to its full extent.

2) Thieves are squishy and when playing with a LB ranger, you’ll need someone to stand on the point (since LB does best off point sniping). While a S/D thief can survive in some team fights, it’s definitely not a great contender for someone to stay engaged with a fight while a teammate is off-point.

My recommendations would be Engineer, Power Necro, or D/D Ele. These classes can sit on a point and brawl while your gf snipes from a distance.

Thank you Guild Wars 2 staff.

This wasn’t an exclusive reveal meant to impress you.

This was a chance for the devs to see how the game performs with a large number of players pushing the limits of a system that has tweaks like a condition cap removed so that you get a stable expansion.

Let me tell you. I used to be one of the friendliest people in pvp. I never raged and didn’t mind giving and receiving advice. Now, this new matchmaking system has caused me so much displeasure in PvP, that I’ve become extremely salty. Pugs vs premades. First time players on my team vs WTS players. It’s infuriating.

Ahh, so you think a ArenaNet should apologize for your lack of self control then?

Look, there’s no reason to be a jerk. If you lose your cool, apologize and own up to it, then take a break and relax. Don’t make up excuses and blame others for your own actions.

Naaa..i dont feel i need to.. i’m venting & i got the right to. Pppl dont want to hear me, they can bloc me. Problem solved

Yea, typically you can get away with verbally kittenting on people when you’re too weak to control yourself…hence the current state of the community.

But hopefully Are aNet will take a step back and realize what this is doing to the community it likes to talk so highly about. Stories like the OP’s are becoming very common, sadly.

Oh, and if blocking people solved the problem, there wouldn’t be so many of these threads, but I’m sure it’s easier for you to think that it does.

Melee vs Ranged vs Weapon Sets

That’s definitely not always the case. Ranged may be more versatile than melee for all fight types. But there are plenty builds that are better off with 2 melee weapons than any ranged weapons. For example, look at axe/mace and greatsword warriors or both PvE dungeon meta guardian builds.

another reason why it’s a bad idea to voice chat with pugs, feel free to jump in Xbox Live into a Halo game with a headset on. A few minutes of people blasting their music through a low-quality mic and kids whining about the most inane things possible should give you a taste of what it’s like.

Haven’t you heard GW2 has the most positive community.

There are times when it is appropriate to compare with other games to draw realistic conclusions, however to compare the GW2 community with a FPS community is not appropriate. There is very little in common between these two games /communities.

Ever spent more than 2 minutes in the PvP lobby? “Better than” doesn’t equate to “good”.

But even if everyone could act like civilized human beings on the Internet, you’d still find few people logging in a VoIP. This is what happened with WoW. People either preferred their guild’s 3rd party VoIP or didn’t want to voice chat with a pug or were too lazy to plug in their mic or didn’t have a mic or just didn’t want to mess with voice chat at all in any capacity.

50% uptime moving reflect is pretty insanely terrible for rangers though.

If you rely on LB, yeah, you’ll be screwed.
If you can handle yourself with GS or if you are a trapper then it’ll barely make a difference.

Longbow, Shortbow, Axe yeah.

I’m not sure we should be comfortable with a weapon skill that invalidates builds.

Don’t forget that you’ll have to swap pets if you’re using a spider….and you won’t be able to throw the greatsword either.
Oh, and no throw torch for Condi builds.

The danger comes from application outpacing cleansing, which has almost no relation to full stack caps.

Which class for my friend and I?? (BRAND NEW)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

There’s really no class that is overpopular in terms of preventing you from finding a group for anything.

For support/healer, I’d say Guardian primarily since you can run a full damage melee build and still bring more defensive support than most other classes can in full support gear. However, if they don’t like melee, then Elementalist is your best bet.

For you, I’d say that Thief or Ranger are best if you want a ranged character. Rangers actually tend to be best suited as melee in PvE dungeon groups if you want to follow the meta builds, but they also do fine with a longbow. In PvP, they do great as ranged snipers. Thieves are pretty much always best melee, but they are the pinnacle of the nimble high dps class.

Hope that helps. Also, welcome to GW2!

I am sorry if this topic has been beaten to death but I am quite new to this game and I’m still climbing the learning curve. I have made 4 characters so far and have gotten them all to level 10-11. They all have armor and weapons that were either found as drops or as rewards (I still have a few items that are from character generation). Is this why I am taking so many dirt naps? How much does level equivalent gear contribute to survivability? Or is it that I still suck at this game and just have to get higher up on the curve and learn which weapon/skill set to use in particular circumstances? If I’m dying this much at level 10 I hate to think what level 60, 70 or 80 will be like…
Thanks in advance.

The best way to increase your survival is to get experience with the content. Defensive gear/traits can help, but often they can just as easily lead to a false sense of security.

Ultimately, however, knowing when to dodge, where to stand, when to blind/block/evade/etc. all will be the key to keeping you on your feet.

HoT WvW and Rewards

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

After watching the presentation and videos for the new Borderlands, I gotta say that a lot of the new stuff looks really interesting. However, as someone who’s currently not invested in WvW, I think it will take more than good maps to get me into WvW with HoT.

What could make this interesting/worthwhile? Rewards for success.

WvW has to be something more than just another champ farm run to really be worthwhile and here are some suggestions my husband and I came up with on how it could be an environment that really fosters competition:

Oasis Event – The idea of a big event like this that comes every 3 hours has a lot of potential. However, you really have to give some drive for people to keep winning this event or to take down the server that’s dominating it. How do you do this?

- Increase the reward for consecutive victories at the Oasis event.
– Increase the reward for breaking a winning streak from an enemy server.

This would really raise the stakes of the event over time. Not only would strong servers have reason to keep up consecutive wins, but this would also give a lot of reason for under dogs to stay dedicated, even when they suffer losses.

Tl;dr for Oasis Event – Increase the risk and reward for consecutive wins.

Investment – Another potentially interesting idea is giving servers incentive for taking and holding an area, such as Stonemist Castle. This could be done through a system of investment. There could be an NPC in the keep that operates like the Crown Pavilon/Ho Ho Tron donation did, where people can donate to it to reach a certain investment level.

For example, the keep starts out at investment Level 1, and after a certain amount of donations, the keep investment is at Level 2. Then, every so often in set time increments, reward chests are granted to defending server members (similar to daily chests). The level of investment (Level 2, Level 3, etc.) could affect the quality of loot inside them. Maybe Level 2 investment chests give blues, Level 3 chests give greens, etc.

To prevent this from just being a passive reward for controlling a keep, this should only trigger when a keep is actively defended regularly. If the keep isn’t being attacked, then this would eventually reset.

One difference this could have from the Crown Pavilon/Ho Ho Tron events is the investing could be done with a separate currency (WvW Badges?) or even with items. For example, people could donate blues with the hope of raising the investment level to Level 2. This has the added benefit of making individual players personally invested in the outcome of a fight, since they have used their own gold (or badges or items) to raise the investment level.

To encourage underdogs to take the keep, the investment could be tied to the keep itself, and not to the defending server, but could lose a level upon being taken. For example, if the investment level is Level 3, and the other server takes it, it drops to Level 2 instead of resetting to Level 1. That would both encourage strong servers to have their players defend a keep (to invest and get better loot) and encourage underdog servers to have their players go after defended keeps (to take over and benefit from the remaining investment). It also penalizes constant turn-overs and back-and-forth grabs because each grab drops the investment a level, so it’s in everyone’s best interest to take an hold something.

Tl;dr for Investment – Let players invest in a keep so that the chance of profit keeps them interested in defending.

Unique Event-based Rewards – The unique WvW weapons skins was a great move. More of this, please.

Hype up the benefits of holding a keep! – Set the announcer, similar to sPvP, to shout out something like “You gained control of the tower! Hold this to grant boons to your world!”. There’s a lot going on in WvW and if it doesn’t feel like winning a keep does anything but give you some good loot bags, then there’s not much incentive to hold it. A quick, big announcement on what happens when you hold a place could drive better defensive behaviors here.

Huh? Power Ranger is generally best played with a zerker amulet. Maybe you’re talking WvW though. I agree it’s not a playstyle for everyone…but it generally isn’t as reliant on gear for defense as a lot of other professions/builds.

not all true , you can use bezerker amulet in pvp just dont use all power traits , like 6,5,0,3 or 4,6,0,3 + scholar runes.

these suck are bad for rangers, Trust me you may think you are safe at range trying to keep that 90%+ hp but only new rangers think this.

later on you’ll learn rangers are better at active combat prevention it looks like we are avoiding combat but the class is not it is just preventing the target from engaging in combat effectivily , soon enough when you’ve learned to use combat prevention in this way, the Beserker amulet on a Ranger becomes much more powerful than a sit at range power LB full glass kitten set up.

also don’t only use damage buff traits like RTW ect and steady focus , flanking strikes all in the same build its not worth it , in the long run it Piegon holes you into using Signet of stone , where you don’t need the extra toughness because the extra toughness on a full kitten build is pointless and 6secs immune to damage wont save you.

you need a form of condi removal and a decent amount of damage prevention Not just SoS or protect me , i’ve even used a 6,2,0,6 sotf build with muddy terrain and 1 spike trap + krait runes with LB + S/D to prevent theifs from jumping me by preplanting the trap to trigger when the thief walks on it, before the thief gets to the backstab stage giving me more time to react with muddy terrain or pbs.

the trap may seem pointless with a low condi damage but it is more for the cripple combined with predators onslaught and the base bleeds is enough to counter low regen of other classes that also use Zerker amulets (basicly having unbuffed regen)

it can be used for Pressure redirecting drop it while you kite against even a low hp target the mobility cripple and the base bleeds will give you a breathing window to finish off nearly any Melee user (if they have already used up most of their cooldowns)

" sure use a Zerker amulet just don’t go the full glass hog or you’ll have a bad time when you start fighting those with a higher MMR. "

MetaBattle would disagree with that, but personally I run the SotF variant and won’t speak to the effectiveness of a deep skirmishing investment.

thats meta battle , its proberly been made by the census of the average player by many players as the most simple yet effective . that is all . i don’t take guides for their word and copy them as they are guides.

Oh, you don’t have to take their word for it. Don’t take mine either. Look at the names on the guides. One in particular should stick out to you since they were in the latest WTS series and also since they post the skirmishing variant on their Twitch stream as their power build.

Here are some of the most common mistakes I see with new LB rangers:

1) They tend to forget that you can often finish off low HP running foes using Crippling Throw when you’re on GS and weapon swap is on cd.
2) They tend not to use their pet swaps well for CC when going into downed state.
3) Kind of along side point 2, they often use the wolf pet too much during heavy fights and are left either without a wolf swap or without the wolf F2 when they get downed.
4) Hunters Shot gets used when an enemy is blocking/evading/invulnerable. I often see this when a ranger uses hunter shot on an enemy just going in downed state before their invulnerability wears off.
5) Rangers revealing themselves after using Hunter’s Shot since they just used Barrage and the damage is still ticking.
