It really sounds like a glitch to me. I mean, you get a bunch of weapons before you get to the end of the track for the armor, so it seems strange that you would get so many weapons before a single armor piece.
But…maybe ANet intends you to buy the other armor pieces with the tokens that you also get as a reward?
Welcome to sPvP!
1) Check out Killchained’s video series on stomping. This will give you a good idea of how to stomp, when to stomp, which classes to stomp, and how to prevent stomps.
2) Staying or leaving a node greatly depends on your build. If you’re tanky enough to stand your ground, sitting on a node isn’t necessarily a bad idea. Generally, you only want to sit on home or mid. Leave far to roamers like thieves and decap engis unless your team specifically calls for help on it for some good reason.
3) I don’t play necro, so no help here, lol.
So…did you just not get all your rage out in your other threads?
Skyham isn’t in the competitive queue (team PvP), so I don’t see what the big deal is.
Yea, it’s annoying in Solo Q, but I think a lot of people are taking Solo Q way too seriously, lol.
Yea, people just put way too much stock into what a rank means. A lot of people never realized that just because you played a ton of PvP games doesn’t mean you’re a pro and just because you don’t spend every waking hour in PvP doesn’t mean you’re a scrub.
Edit – I guess the OP deleted his post.
For sPvP, your gear and level doesn’t matter. Just click the ‘PvP Build’ button at the top and select the runes, sigils, build, and stats you want. Stats are based only on your runes, sigils, and amulet chosen on the PvP Build window.
If you don’t have the weapon type you want to equip, you can just buy a white one from the vendors, which works just the same as an exotic/legendary since the actual weapon stats don’t matter.
Seems like there are a lot of players who love to talk down on other players, make excuses, and blame others for their lack of success.
It also seems like a lot of these players are having trouble finding friends to make a group of 5.
Somehow I don’t think this is a coincidence. =P
Moral of the story: Be a decent human being to the other human beings you surround yourself with, even when they don’t fulfill all your expectations.
Is this the correct thread?
It’s the thread I intended to post on since my reply has to do with the points the OP made. =P

sPvP throws Tomes of Knowledge at you like Olive Oil throwing dishes at Bluto. Seems like a pretty good time to level to me. =P
Eh…the patch overall made PvP a little better, but it hasn’t made much difference to me.
It’s nice to have all my PvP skins unlocked account wide…but I honestly haven’t changed any of my character’s look since the patch dropped (well, one alt I never play got a shiny new look).
In PvP itself, I’m still running the same build after playing around a bit, but that’s primarily because there were no meaningful changes for thieves, outside of a nerf to S/P.
It really just feels like ANet put in a ton of resources and time into what just amounted as a nice quality of life change while nothing has really gotten that shaken up. I’m still waiting for a new PvP mode. Sure TDM is out there, but I haven’t really touched it since it’s custom arena only. Even then, I’m not really that excited about it since I think sPvP needs more objectives, not less.
As frustrating as it is to have so many good items turned into tonic junk, I gotta admit: The customer service on refunds has been on the ball.
The new drum is pretty fun.
From a more pragmatic perspective, though, consider extending your bags/banks, getting a permanent gathering tool and/or the infinite salvage machine.
Maybe it’s viable in high level fractals?
Personally, I don’t have a single reason to ever use this trait.
Eh, I would generally recommend just getting used to D/P over D/D, but if you do go D/D, make sure to get the SA trait that blinds on stealth.
Thieves Guild really is the go-to elite for PvE. Yes, the thieves will get trashed from the start a lot of the time, but that’s just the way it goes in a game that only has 3 elites per class (ignoring race elites since they’re generally just a fun gimmick at best).
Daggerstorm can be great on fights with high AoE or with projectiles, but other than that, there’s nothing else worth considering. Sadly, ANet decided to focus on making a bunch of new heals instead of new elites.
I had a bit of a rough time in my first day or two back after the patch, but that was partly because I spoiled myself playing a bunker guard for so long. However, now that I got back in the swing of things, I seem to be doing well.
I’m running the standard 2/6/0/0/6 trickery D/P build and the only change I made was switching Lyssa runes for Traveler.
Thief is definitely not at the bottom of the list. I think the OP needs to play more and get used to the new builds people are running.
Yes, Easter isn’t just a religious holiday. No one said that’ so let’s not start debunking arguments that no one is making. However, like it or not, Easter is treated as primarily a christian holiday, regardless of any relation to pagan holidays or secular celebration.
So, I’m sorry if you you don’t like that I desire to escape the influence of the dominant religion offends, but I certainly don’t think that deserves the animosity it has seemingly evoked.
(edited by Dahkeus.8243)
I, for one, am glad to see this christian event ignored.
What does that have to do anything? There’s no way of knowing how many megaservers there are.
P.s. I sense an undertone of “Let’s prove that the PvP population is too small so we can use this to leverage our opinions of what we think PvP should be”, but that may just be because it’s so prevalent on these forums.
That looks incredibly squishy and has almost no condi removal. Ouch.
If you want fun, I’d recommend Ele first and foremost, theif and mesmer second, and perhaps Necromancer third.
Fun, maybe, but thief, mesmer and ele will probably be three of the hardest classes to learn.
guardian. the only class that viable in all game modes.
^ Guardian is a solid choice. It’s not the only class viable in all game modes, but it’s a strong choice for just about anything and the mechanics are very straight forward.
I would discourage thief as it’s a very unforgiving class to learn due to the low passive defense (you’re squishy as hell) and high reliance on active defense (evade/stealth/blind).
In a standard, max range DPS situation, yes, it is pretty lackluster. Because of this, you generally want to just stick to autoattack. However, it has 2 main uses:
1) Maintain DPS when a target gets close to you.
2) Set up burst in PvP situations. An example of number 2 is using Rampage as One, then Rapid Fire to stack might on your pet. After this, you can use a burst pet ability like Blinding Slash.
So that basically means that the ability has failed design, just as I predicted.
Because that ability is not only wasting it’s potential
(if an enemy gets in close range – I’m already switching my weapons. Standing still to maintain Rapid Fire against melee is a suicide)
- but it is just an ability that somehow strengthens other abilities or proc effects (Rampage as One / Sigils) while it was not even it’s purpose (or shouldn’t have been – no abilities should be effective only with a certain weapon/ability).That being said, the only pro of this ability is that it gets you rid of Blind, or removes Aegis while keeping the main portion of it’s damage… Or keeping an open fire on stealthing Thieves…?
It may be just me, but it definitely feels like a failed ability. There are many class professions that have much higher burst damage that Rangers lack.
I don’t feel like Rangers are the no.1 class for sPvP. Not the LongBow version. Would it be a bad idea to give something more to this ability? Or probably reduce it’s cast time or trade some other part of ranger’s LB damage into Rapid Fire?
What? It’s actually a pretty solid design. It’s not a brainless spam-this-on-cooldown-for-deeps ability, but it’s also not always a dps loss either. You use it in the right situation to gain DPS or other advantages that autoattack doesn’t provide.
The cat’s already out of the bag. As disappointing as it is that there is now not a single PvP-specific skin in the game, making these skins account bound at this point won’t make the ones that have already hit the trading post go away.
Yes. You totally deserve exotic gear for a 10-15 minute time investment, lol.
In this thread: More proof that there is a very large portion of jerks in the PvP community.
To any players who are giving sPvP a serious short for the first time: Stick it out. Ignore the fussy veterans that are getting their feathers ruffled because you didn’t hop in immediately knowing everything they know now.
Do the double sigils on longbow change anything?
Running Fire/Air, Rapid fire will have a much higher probability of double-proc compared to long range shot, even if you’re running 100% crit chance.
Depending on your crit %, it might. I mean, you’re limited by the internal cooldown, so with a high crit %, there’s not a ton of difference between autoattack and rapid fire, but as your crit % gets lower, you start to become more limited by RNG for that proc and less limited by the internal cooldown.
“hard” is a very misleading word.
No class is “hard” to play in GW2.
Yea, it was just a matter of time until one of these people popped in here to say this.
Every time someone asks about the relatively difficulty of a profession in a game, there’s always at least one guy who has to boast about how “every class is easy” and that it’s not hard, you just have to [insert game mechanic here].
There will probably be the inevitable defensive reply to this, but don’t bother. This kinda stuff pops up on forums for every game, no matter how complex or simple the mechanics.
Hmm…so the argument is that TDM isn’t viable because it’s so obvious that it’s imbalanced.
…but no one can agree on how it’s imbalanced.
Something doesn’t add up, lol. But, I guess that’s what happens when you have people arguing about a “dominating meta” 2 days after a balance patch.
It’s a little too late to make this account bound. =P
Axe OH is better than many think, still it shouldn’t be run as standard Off-Hand. It is a very situational weapon. Just equip it whenever you feel like needing a reflect and/or pull. I always carry one in my inventory.
^ Yea, solid advice. It’s handy in situations, but seldom a good main weapon.
I really don’t care if somebody sucks because they can get better, but why the hell would you play your first few matches in tourney pvp and not hot join….
Why not? There’s no sign on the outside of these game types that says that this isn’t for new players. In fact, there’s an MMR that’s supposed to pair players with similarly skilled players, so new players are more likely to get paired with players that are also new.
Yea, it’s not inherently bad, but I find that offhand axe rarely synergizes well with a build.
Interesting. I’d love to see healing eles become part of the meta.
Well…as long as it doesn’t result in bogged-down stalemate games. =P
Don’t forget, that when you get revealed by ranger’s sic ‘em or a stealth trap. That’s a free +200 power boost for you.
Funny thing is I don’t think I have ever been revealed by either of these since they came out. No one wants to waste resources on buying the traps and rangers almost never bother with sic ’em.
It kinda depends on your definition of ‘hard’. Thief definitely requires a very fast reaction time since it’s a very fast-paced profession compared to something like Guardian. However, you’re generally not juggling as many abilities as something like an ele.
Personally, I’ve found it to be one of the harder professions to play well, but I certainly wouldn’t say that it’s harder than a staff ele to play. Eles in general are easily one of the toughest professions because of the number of skills they have to juggle along with how you have to plan which element to use so that something you need isn’t stuck behind an element on cooldown at the wrong moment.
Agreed with this. As much as I like all the new UI changes, it would be a very welcome change to have the Equipment panel made the default when you open the character screen.
+1 on this.
A lot of it is up in the air since the meta is settling after a big balance patch, but Survival of the Fittest has opened up a good number of possibilities. Personally, I’ve been finding success with 2/4/2/6/0 so far.
However, the standard spirit ranger build should still do well. It’s possible that when all the dust settles, people may just stick with the same spirit ranger build that’s been a staple of the meta for so long. The build is boring as hell…but it works.
RtW doesn’t really increase the range, I’ve been testing it.
It’s more simple – the arrow travels faster so it gets full benefit from range. Slower arrows may be outranged because the game counts the range from the place you made the shot. It’s a big difference on moving targets and feels like you’re able to hit even further.
It still does arc so the range is obviously increased.
Yea, the extra range isn’t RtW. The longbow will allow you to hit targets even when you’re farther away than where you need to be for the autocast to keep 1 casting. This has pretty much been the situation since launch.
As for MT, it’s a good skill. It’s not a great ability, which is why I wouldn’t take it without Wilderness Knowledge and Survival of the Fittest, but it gives you a reliable immobilize that helps out a good bit. If nothing else, it’s worth tossing just to cleanse conditions at times since it has such a short recharge.
Personally, I like using Point Blank Shot to knock someone off point and then immobilizing with MT to keep them off while the point decaps. This can work well against tanky targets standing solo on a point.

+1 to you Eleshazar. I totally agree.
Nothing has really changed for S/D. You still have the standard acro evade spam, but I have heard of some people using the D/P trickery traits with S/D as well.
The new released traits are all pretty useless for PvP and there hasn’t really been any other changes that really affect S/D.
I totally expected this to be a troll post, but there’s good advice here. Nice. =)
P.s. for good tips on how to land stomps or prevent stomps, check out Killchained’s video guides: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAhX2Vt8fhBZclmnw3k8GvNBZx-zWW8cH
Thing with your build is you don’t need quick draw pet prowess or furious grip. To me it’s a waste of traits. If you’re gonna go with lb, might as well go long range all out!
U don’t need shorter cd on LB because if you’re not spamming #1 from max range ure not doing it right
You’re missing the point. You can’t just sit at max range and spam 1 all the time in sPvP and even when you can, that’s not always what benefits a team fight the most. There is too much Line of Sight in a lot of cases and in others, the best place to perch for ranged attacks isn’t at max range.
Examples:
Forest if Nifhel – the best place to stand for mid is the side platforms that won’t let you get to 1500 range. The side points also have barriers in front of them so that 1500 is impossible.
Battle of Kyhlo – Side points are the only place where you can hit a target on point from 1500 range. Even shooting mid from the top of clocktower is less than 1500.
Skyham – Again, very few places will even allow you a 1500 range shot and none of them will hit someone on a point. The best perches for mid are much shorter than this.
So, unless you just pray that you get a map like Forest or Legacy, you will have some traits that will do almost nothing for you.
In the meantime, Point Blank Shot is an ability which can turn the tide of a fight faster than killing an enemy by preventing a stomp or enemy rez. It also can allow you to decap a point, such as by knocking someone off the Clocktower point in Kyhlo.
Oh, and yes, furious Grip doesn’t do a whole lot, but Tail Wind does give additional mobility. Example: kill the beast or defend home, then swap to melee weapons for swiftness and run to the perch on mid. By the time you get there, you’ll have weapon swap off cooldown and can switch to bow.

Lb is weak without rtw because your dps becomes unreliable. I cant imagibe doing lb without it. U can hit from 1500 (ish) without eagle eye. With rtw and eagle eye it becomes about 1800. Try it out on the golems.
yes, I know you can really hit from 1800 using Eagle Eye if you don’t rely on the autocast, but that much range has very limited use in sPvP because of how compact the maps are.
You really just need enough range to stand off point and in those cases, your dps is still reliable enough without RtW.
Now, if we start talking about WvW, then RtW + Eagle Eye definitely becomes a really strong combination.
Reliable long range dps is the only factor that allows you to go zerker and kite people around. Rtw gives you the ability to keep dps on fleeing targets making the ranger the best long range assassin in the game.
The community has been asking for Legolas and you’ve been given it. At least take the time to test it out properly.
I’ve tested it and I’ve found the shorter cooldown on bow skills to make a bigger difference than RtW+EE, at least in sPvP. If you’re 1500+ range in sPvP, the enemy will just line of sight you, then take a back way to capture an objective. I’ve also found that having more knockbacks and AoE has more of an impact in sPvP where you will frequently need to kick stomps or enemies rezzing their allies.
(edited by Dahkeus.8243)
Power Longbow Ranger is actually a pretty good counter to a lot of condition/AoE spam classes like necro that are becoming popular.
Since it’s a ranged build that stands offpoint, you generally want to stick with (tanky) allies who will contest the point for you. While they do this, you can melt through enemies quickly and if an ally goes down, you have wolf fear and Point Blank shot to counter stomps (at least the ones without stability, lol).
Power rangers generally have been in a weak spot, but the buff to pet AI and the addition of Survival of the Fittest, the profession seems to have some good potential in sPvP atm. Here’s the build I’ve found success with so far: http://intothemists.com/guides/3523-sotf_power_ranger
However, if MM ends up becoming really big, it may be worth working Piercing Arrows in.
Ultimately, I’ve found Read the Wind to still be a bit lacking in sPvP since it works best with Eagle Eye and 1500 range isn’t very useful with the small map designs.
However, I have been using a build similar to the OP with a few changes. Here’s the IntoTheMists guide I’ve posted on it.
The build is 2/4/2/6/0. Instead of going deep in Marks to get RtW, I’ve put 20 in Skirmishing to get the reduced cooldown on bow skills. I did still keep 10 in Marks for Keen Edge since it’s a nice extra condition removal.
I know it’s still early and the meta is still forming, but this build seems to be very effective at assisting with team fights since it counters many of the popular builds that focus on dropping AoE conditions on top of the point. With this, you stand back and provide assistance in DPS without becoming another target. If an ally goes down, use wolf or Point Blank shot to come in and rez.
I’ll be trying 4/4/0/6/0 with the new SotF trait. I use LB + Axe/WH.
Taking SotF without Wilderness Survival? Ouch.
Yea, the build is definitely solid for fights, but you really have to rely on good teammates to keep points contested or else you’ll still lose the game to being outcapped. That’s just one of the straight-up disadvantages to ranged builds and stealth-based thieves encounter similar issues.
Still, I hope to see something like this become strong in the meta. Spirit rangers are really getting old. =P
Yea, I hate QQ threads like this, but fears do seem to be pretty over-the-top right now. =/
