Mesmer Downstate

in PvP

Dahkeus.8243

Eh, the big red arrow is really what gives it away. However, mesmers still have a really good downed state. Since it de-targets you from enemies, you can’t just use a normal teleport to follow the location like you can with a thief. The temporary stealth also prevents even a ground targeted teleport from landing unless the downed ability is used too early and even then it’s a test of reflexes to spot the point of reappearance, then point and click before the stomp animation finishes.

Really, having any sort of downed state that isn’t directly countered by stability is a blessing right now.

The server change announced should help guilds stick together a bit more (at least guilds that have members on multiple servers), but guild halls would do much, much more to help guilds feel more like the communities they were designed to be.

I, personally, would really like to see this happen.

I gotta admit…I was pretty pessimistic about what the announcement today would be.

This is still not the addition of guild halls, a new race, a new class, or anything like that, but this should be a great change overall if done right.

I’m really hoping that this does a good job to unify guilds that have members across other servers.

The wishful thinking side of me wants it to be guild halls.

The realistic, yet still somewhat optimistic side of me hopes to see changes that allow parties to stick together more easily for more aspects of the game. Ex: hot join PvP prevents joining at the same time and autobalance often pits you and your friends against each other, even when you specifically try to get on the same team.

However, I really don’t have my hopes up on this last feature release.

5v4 don't count on Leaderboards?

in PvP

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

@ Style: I did some thinking and realized that this wouldn’t work because not every game that experiences a 5 v 4 is entirely a 5 v 4 match. Some games start off kitten v 4, others have 5 v 4 halfway through and some even have 5 v 4 for part of the game, but then have the missing player return after being gone for a bit. If you apply this to only games where it’s 5 v 4 from the start, then you miss a large portion of the games which end up kitten v 4 from players DCing or leaving midway. If you apply this to any game that experiences a 5 v 4 at any point, then games with small partial DCs or where a player just ragequits near the end will be wrongly treated unfairly.

@ MithranArkanere: That’s a really complicated solution that would open up a whole ‘nuther can of worms since you would have players raging at being sat out during the game. If there wasn’t enough incentive for people to ‘volunteer’ to help out these broken games then you could have innocent players sat out for an entire game. If you make the incentives too good, then people will just abuse the system to get in these games.

EDIT : I realise this isn’t the most helpful for soloQ, but as ppl said, soloQ is rly random and helpless at times, and that’s why I stopped playing it overall. As a general tip if you try to form up a team and play as best as possible : It is better to stale the teamfights to win lightly defended nodes. If you can win a fight, obviously, take it. But don’t make your strategy revolve around winning teamfights, it isn’t the right way to go in my opinion. Nodes > kills.

If you’re not doing solo Q, you can just ask on voice chat: “Need help at mid or should I stay here?”

bhagawd really nailed it. I know it feels weird to sit on a point with no incomings while your team is struggling on another point, but if you are playing the right build to hold a point (strong in 1 v 1 or a bunker), then you’re being a very strong asset to your team, particularly in solo queue.

One thing I would stress, however, is to be good on communication. If you’re sitting alone on home and you see enemy incoming that will be tough for you to hold off (outnumbers you or is a build that may counter yours), be sure to call out to your team by saying something in chat and/or pinging the map.

It’s possible your team will ignore or not pay attention to this, but your odds of holding that point go up significantly and your win percentage will reflect that.

Guardians...?

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

Guardians are in a better spot than any other profession in the game in pretty much every aspect of the game:

PvE
Guards give DPS nearly on par with warriors while bringing reflects rivaled only by mesmers. They have 2 high end, meta builds (look up Obal’s guides for these). Most professions have 1 meta build and some have none (necros).

WvW
Guardians probably are the most popular profession in organized WvW guilds since they are hands down some of the best front-liners available.

sPvP
Guards are still considered a must-have for most teams since they are such strong bunker/team support. They also work well as meditation DPS.

There will always be people who reroll after getting a case of seeing greener on the other side, but the bottom line is that almost no other class in the game is viable in as many areas as guardians are while having as many viable builds as guardians do.

There is one MAJOR flaw with your entire thing…. Playing Guardian isn’t fun.. it’s a CHORE. You MUST use these specific meta builds in order to survive, or you must sacrifice all your survivability (next to none, low hp) to do damage. Meaning you DIE before you can do any of that actual damage, especially when zerging

Lol, speak for yourself.
1) Every class has meta builds. If anything, Guardian has more meta builds and hence more diversity than most other classes in just about every aspect of the game.

2) All classes sacrifice survivability for DPS. However, Guards are one of the sturdiest berserkers in the game since you still have so much access to blocks, blinds, and protection, even in the many of the glassiest of builds.

3) Why would you zerg in a glass build? If you’re talking WvW, then the meta is a high defense, tanky build.

I’m really baffled at your post…either you’re new to the class or you’re really out of touch of the Guardian meta or you haven’t ever played another class. Play a thief for a day if you want to know what it’s like to be squishy, lol.

Dungeon modes again?

in PvP

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

Sorry we weren’t super clear on how this whole thing works so let me try and clear it up here!

The dungeon tracks are on a 2 week rotations and only 1 will be active if you don’t unlock them. When a track you were currently progress

So when the 4/15 build hits you will need to complete the story mode of the corresponding dungeon reward track you wish to unlock permanently on your account. By completing the story mode on any character you will be able to run the repeatable dungeon reward track whenever you so please forever.

Even if you have run the dungeon in the past you will need to run it again after 4/15 to unlock the reward track. The reason for this is to put both PvE and PvP players on the same level once the 4/15 build hits. So PvP only players wouldn’t be the only people that need to run the dungeons on 4/15.

You can unlock the dungeons at anytime AFTER 4/15 regardless of where it is in dungeon track rotation. So on 4/15 if you complete the story mode of all the dungeons you will have all 8 repeatable dungeon rewards tracks available to you day one.

Personally, I would love to see a team of full PvPers run through a dungeon.

Guard: “Ok, umm, I’ll bunk boss?”
Thief: “kitten it Engi, stop knocking the mobs all over the place!”
Ranger: “Why are my spirits all dead?”
Necro: “Why are my minions all dead?”
Warrior: “I don’t understand why people think this stuff is hard, lololol.”

Larger maps with more side objectives would really be ideal. I know a lot of people like Deathmatch and would probably like to see a WoW arena-style setting, but I personally don’t think that GW2 is a good platform for that.

Also, objective-based PvP is generally more accessible to a wider audience since victory isn’t just about who has the fastest reflexes, but also who can have the best battlefield strategy.

As it stands now, sPvP is too small and compact to really have a more grand or diverse strategy and WvW is too large to have the same impact from small fights.

I think that many of the GW1 GvG maps are a good example of a more balanced approach to size and scope of PvP matches.

Prediction: Decap engi will still be incredibly strong.

I agree with the prediction. I think this will give certain builds a better chance at eventually killing off a decap engi, but decap engis should still be able to give their team a big advantage since they still have so many knockbacks with no tells/cast times.

However, I think one of the best ways to balance decap engis, at least for solo Q is to take Skyham out of the rotation.

Don't Defend Close if you can get Decapped

in PvP

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

Unfortunately, unless you’re 2 v 1 a decap, just about every class is still liable to get decapped by a good engi. I play a Sc/Sh & Hammer bunker guard with SYG and traited Virtue of Courage and I still can get decapped by good engis if they stick with it long enough.

The number of knockbacks available to engis simply outpaces the amount of stability any class can bring and some knockbacks have no telegraphs (such as flamethrower).

If I were dev for a day, I would at least put some casts with tells onto some engi knockbacks so that there’s a decent amount of counterplay for 1 v 1s. This will allow good players to stand a chance with well-timed dodges and use of cooldowns without making a decap engi too weak to pull off their role.

For the millionenth time, it’s not the knockbacks that make the decapper so annoying, the KBs are merely the tools, it’s AR that gives the decapper its survivability to stick around and decap.

You don’t see any non AR bunker engis decapping or holding points for long unless they’re killing you.

AR helps them bunker, but that only makes a difference against some builds. I’m guessing you play necro, lol.

Surviving alone doesn’t really help win a game unless you’re standing on a node you control or are preventing someone from capping a neutral node. If engis couldn’t knockback like they can, then they be just another bunker without stability and running to far would be a complete waste.

If you can prevent being knocked off and decapped from your homepoint, it doesn’t matter if you get in a deadlock fight and are unable to kill them since you still control the point.

according to anet the zerk build is receiving a 10% damage nerf which means having 5 group of zerker after the patch will be doing 50% less damage , so means that if you want more damage inviting 1 or 2 condition build to the group is far better then having all zerker

a good lvl 80 condition build class can easy do 6k damage a sec with out crits at least this is what I do with my thf having 15 stack of bleed doing 3k damage a tick ,poison doing 1k a sec and my daggers doing 2k a sec

I am sure with the zerk nerf condition build are going be close next to a zerker damage build especially now that you can stack both condition stack and power stack sigils

5 people doing 10% less damage is still equal to 10% less damage. if 5 people do 9k damage instead of 10k you would be doing a total of 45k damage insted of 50k. The difference is 5k. 5/50×100=10%.

That’s incorrect , 5 people doing 10% less damage each is a total of 50% less damage over all as a group

your math that you just did was each player doing 1% damage different I promise you that if the zerker build atm is doing 9k a hit after the patch they will be doing 6k a hit or less

lol, I’m glad you aren’t the one caIculating the interest on my mortgage. I think you should research how percentages work. Also 9k damage versus 10k damage is a 10% difference not 1. If you had 10 million people doing 10% less damage the damage difference is still going to be 10%. 10% of 1 person doing 20k or 10% of 20 people doing 1k is the same. 10% of 5 people doing 100k is still 10%.

^ This made my day.

Dahkeus.8243

Are you posting in the wrong thread?

You’re still arguing against things I’m not saying. I’m not saying that each profession should have a specified role. Where are you getting this stuff?

I’m saying that healing should be a viable tactic. This doesn’t mean you should need to have a dedicated healer, but it does mean that there should be a reason to wear something other than berserker gear in a dungeon group.

I’m saying that groups should need to handle mobs with something more than just stacking in a spot and AoEing/cleaving them down.

Yes, it’s good that there are roles for reflecting projectiles and stacking specific DPS buffs, but because anything outside of this matters so little, group tactics are stale and no one following the meta wants anything other than a full-berserker geared member in their party.

It’s bad enough that this is present in all, but high end fractals, but if you continue this trend into a 10-player group, these problems will be even more pronounced. Groups will take a guard, someone to stack might (maybe an ele), a spotter/spirit ranger, then they’ll just stack whatever does the highest personal DPS.

and let me repeat since you still don’t seem to have seen it when I wrote it before: I’m not arguing for dedicated roles

One more time since you seem to have missed this so many times:
I’m not arguing for dedicated roles

Feature Pack - What's your bottom line?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

So, it looks like we’ve received the lion’s share of the feature pack announcements so far and I’m wondering what people think these changes will ultimately mean for them.

Here’s my personal bottom line:

Trait Changes – I will maybe adjust 5 points in my thief’s PvE build to get a bit more DPS if I ever do another dungeon on my thief again, but that’s about it unless there’s something really earthshaking that hasn’t been revealed so far. The only decent looking trait changes aren’t for any classes I play.

Rune/Sigil Changes – I’ll probably adjust some sigils, depending on what they ultimately look like, at least in sPvP.

Critical Damage Changes – No changes here. Berserker is still king.

Wardrobe System – This will be a nice convenience to share skins. Decent quality of life change, but won’t change the way I play.

Dye changes – I guess I’ll be selling some unidentified dyes and won’t need to worry about buying many, if any, dyes anymore.

Social Improvements – Last logged in feature will be easier to track inactives in the guild than checking the last date someone earned an achieve.

Account Bound Stuff – Well, this will make the grind of ascended gear more bearable I guess. Decent quality of life change, but won’t change the way I play except for maybe saving me some gold.

Repair cost/trait reset I guess this will save me some gold.

What I’ll do when I log in Apr 15th I’ll probably just rearrange a few armor setups/skins for some characters, but that’s about it. I don’t expect this patch to really change much for me outside of making some things a bit more convenient.

You’re misreading what I’m saying if you think that I’m arguing for trinity-type mechanics. I’m arguing that there’s a wide range of mechanics that are largely ignored because of dodges. Yes, blinds are used to some degree on trash and aegis is helpful to some degree too, but we still have no real use or at least very limited use for:
– Group heals
– Group regeneration
– Weakness on enemies
– Group Protection
– Enemy CC through immobilize/snare/knockdown

Do you even play this game? Wait, don’t answer. I know at what level the “average”… if you can call it that… GW2 players play and do dungeons.
I’m honestly sick of seeing these ridiculous arguments thread after thread. I see someone else is already wasting his time trying to make you see reason, so more power and critical damage to him.
Strike hard and true.

Yes. How dare people argue for a wider range viable roles for dungeons instead of just praising the pure berserker stack-n-DPS mentality that is encouraged by 90% of dungeon content.

@ hendo: I’ll repeat this point since you seemed to have missed it – Making healing worthwhile doesn’t automatically make a dedicated healer required.

And yes, high end fractals is the one portion of the game where a decent amount of defense is needed since you can’t burn through it with the same stack-n-spam tactics that you use for all the other dungeons in the game.

Like I said, there are already plenty of examples of tons of weak enemies attacking you in the current dungeons. In order for a 10-man dungeon to be anything different than 5-man dungeons, you have to present greater challenges. A boss sending a dodgeable attack your way every 7 seconds or so is not new and there would be no point in the new dungeon. Now a boss forcing you to dodge while lots of weak enemies force your larger party to use lots of support skills would be interesting.

For that matter, there is no point in any new content if it’s the same ol’ dodge the boss attack every 7 seconds. All you’re doing is reskinning the same encounter.

The problem with your example of current dungeons is that those weak mobs just get stacked and AoEed down while they get trapped in a spot that keeps them easily blinded/reflected/etc. If they added in a bit of AI code to make enemies step out of AoE, similar to in the first Guild Wars, players would actually be soaking up a bit of that steady damage and would have to engage with enemies instead of just standing in one spot, spamming abilities.

You know you ~can~ just go play WoW, instead of turning GW2 into WoW, yes? Action combat is the point. 10 man action combat could be interesting, but these suggestions about unavoidable damage are contrary to the heart of the game.

Is this a troll?

WoW’s a gear-grind extravaganza. Just because people enjoy large group, instanced content doesn’t mean they like to grind all day to be able to do it or like having their friends locked out of their group because they aren’t in the same gear tier.

And how is unavoidable damage contrary to the ‘heart of the game’? Do you believe that having all healing and support traits/builds/gear being irrelevant is being true to the ‘heart of the game’?

I’m not trolling, I’m serious. I, and many others in this forum, quite enjoy the fact that basically all damage is avoidable with a good group providing strong party support. Aegis + blind + evades + blocks + dodges are all active damage mitigation, which require skill and reflex to apply. This is compared to equipping toughness gear, which requires no skill. I don’t think it’s fun to mitigate damage with gear or healing, because it’s a very passive form of play.

We all want harder content, and even harder content that requires more people or more coordination. That part we certainly all agree with! Content which requires toughness or healing power or whatever seems like less fun, since it is not twitchy and active.

Basically: we agree that harder content would be cool, but you’ll find that very many people do not want more Trinity-type mechanics like what you are suggesting.

Ultimately, you don’t need a dedicated healer spot to make gear with healing stats a viable or attractive option to players. Making healing worthwhile doesn’t automatically make a dedicated healer required.

When you open up 10-player content, there’s also a lot more room for diverse builds and it would be a shame if it resulted in just being another situation where you only need a tiny portion of the available utility because that results in people making parties where they primarily stack whatever is the highest DPS class.
