This…is pretty awesome. Reminds me a lot of Ranger Spike in GW1. I think if WvW wasn’t as massive 24/7 event and was more like Hall of Heroes/GvG, we would see a lot more organized tactics like this.
Thanks for sharing this!
I agree. Giant 50-man map zergs is a big part of the reason we stopped doing churn bombs in the first place.
Although I’d still be really happy to test a 50 ele churn bomb on a 50-man stack…
Btw, this is semi-off topic, but I checked out the staff sPvP build guides on your channel and they’re pretty awesome. You did a really great job of not just explaining the build, but the logic behind decisions in gameplay, which I really appreciate.
Personally…I think people got bored. Yes, there are a million and one complaints that people can make about balance and such, but people don’t get as upset about balance when the game still feels fresh to them.
As it stands now, we’ve had the same classes with the same skills and same professions in only 1 gametype since launch. This was bound to happen.
edit Also to the OP: You were on a team with 2 thieves and 2 eles and a ranger against a much more balanced team. The score doesn’t particularly surprise me. Sometimes the luck of the draw in team comp just isn’t in your favor.

Does this mean my 10+ stack of tourney chests in my bank are gonna disappear :/
Why collect so many and never open them? I can’t imagine that those rewards matter that much to you if you have so many. Otherwise open before the 18th.
No point to opening them, after doing 4k+ tourneys, and getting same gear. Saving them hoping the rewards would implement better stuff in it.
Open them, then salvage gear for Luck. That’s as good as it gets. The devs have already confirmed that you should open them and that this is as good as it gets.

Eh, if you feel like people should have to jump through hoops for info that could easily be available through a single post, then that’s your prerogative.
I’m sure making people jump through hoops helps your own personal sense of justice that you feel people owe you, but in the large scheme of things, it just slows down people who want to learn and stifles free discussion, which leads to improvement.
Besides, I can guarantee you that it’s a lot easier to make one post explaining a build somewhere than to individually coach everyone who wants to learn from you (well…depending on how many people there are that think you have something to learn from).
Yea, Thief and Engi are the way to go for 1vX. Check out Yishis’ channel to see footage and explanations of how this works:

Play PvP for a while and you’ll find that heavy burst like this is pretty rare as any build that can pull this off will spend the majority of the game on their back or away from fights.
Also, if you’re getting hit like this, you’re probably really glassy yourself. That may be part of your issues.
…but I doubt you’re here to find out what went wrong in attempt to improve and counter this. I think you just want to vent a bit. =P
Dang it! The more I read about Hammer Guardian, the more I wish I’d made a Warrior.
The light field is annoying, but you use a hammer build where it’s needed, such as in Fractals or disorganized pugs. In these cases, having prot up is more important than making it easy to stack might. When you’re doing normal dungeons that don’t need this prot, use GS/S+F and you’ll still bring the awesome utility of a guardian while also DPSing like a warrior.
Besides, the light field doesn’t prevent might stacking with fire fields entirely, but you do need to be careful with timing your blast finishers to hit the right field, which can be annoying. Just remember that the oldest field down is the one that is triggered by combos.
It’s not about coddling or about whether or not you can figure out someone’s build without them sharing.
Showing off your play and then saying that you won’t share your build is like saying “Hey check out this new book I bought!” then throwing it on the ground instead of handing it to them. Sure, you can pick up the book and see it just fine, but it’s a pretty crappy attitude.
And I’m sure there are good eles. There are good people in every community…but the community overall here seems to be pretty needlessly secretive.
Thanks for sharing the vid…but what is it with eles not sharing builds? This is the second video I’ve seen posted by an ele that refused to share their build. I’ve played this game since beta and have been a regular follower of the forums the whole time, but I have never seen anyone refuse to share their build until I started following the ele section. =/
It’s too bad you don’t have a community here like Guardians and Thieves do.
Even if enemies did projectiles more in open world, you’d still be better just mowing through them as usual anyways.
Wall is an amazing skill because of how much of a difference it makes in difficult content. Try running Arah or upper level fractals without any projectile reflect to see exactly what the impact is.
My personal opinion: WvW is influenced more by how many people you have on your server that log in regularly with PCs that can handle zerg fights without massive FPS loss than it is by how “skilled” or how organized players are.
Sure, there are good fights between organized groups at skilled times, but we’re talking about a battle that’s going on 24/7 and is often filled with people who join to get random achievements, map complete, or to just roam around, trying to get random ganks.
Skill in WvW is vastly overestimated.
But at least it’s fun.
Blob is a term that people use to describe enemy zergs…because the person posting is a pro in a coordinated, skilled group, whereas the enemy is just a bunch of noobs in large numbers.
(^ to be read with biting sarcasm)
Overall, GW2 did a good job on making gameplay that’s less focused on UI and more focused on what happens in the fight…
But stacking in dungeons really takes away from that since there’s not much to watch for outside of a mess of spell effects squished in an awkward camera angle.
Here’s some options:
– Open up waypoints and Points of Interest on your map. This gives more xp than you would think and also opens up the map, which is really handy for later on (especially if you join a guild that does guild missions).
– Do some sPvP and spend your glory on the Tomes of Knowledge to get levels.
– Try out WvW. The new Edge of the Mists map gives a really good hybrid of PvE and PvP.
– When you reach level 30, start trying out some dungeons. Ascalon Catacombs – Story Mode will be the first one available.
Also, remember that there are tons of different areas to level. If you started off in the area of one race, you can always use the portals in Lions Arch that connect major cities to go to different areas, so if, for instance, you get bored of Sylvari areas, you can go to Human areas since all races have 2 nearby low level zones.
So, I’ll admit from the start that I’ve never played an ele in PvP.
However, I’ve heard a lot of people mention thieves as a hard counter to eles…and as someone who’s primarily played thief, I believe that.
It sounds like, because of this, that the best way to buff eles without breaking them is to buff specifically tools that allow them to compete against their hard counters.
Welcome to GW2. If you’ve taken a break MMOs, but played WoW, then GW2 is a solid choice for coming back. A lot of mechanics are streamlined so that the experience is easier to get into, but there’s still plenty of depth to keep things interested.
It would be unlikely that we’d see this since many hexes like this have been replaced by the Confusion condition, which is basically a simplified version of empathy and backfire.
Ele in PvP (buff)
Ranger in just about everything (except spirit builds in PvP) (buff)
Warriors could definitely use a nerf though…hard to only choose 2.
It seems like the general consensus is that eles are in a pretty weak state compared to other classes at the moment in PvP. However, it wasn’t that long ago that eles dominated as bunkers.
If you were dev for a day, how would you balance this class to make it competitive without being overpowered?
EDIT I totally forgot about the new balance forums. Devs, feel free to move this topic, but if you do, can you add something about how this is about sPvP in the title?
(edited by Dahkeus.8243)
I’ve played the game since beta, but just recently decided to give the ele prof a serious try…
and so far it’s a blast. I really should have rolled an ele a long time ago.
However, there’s two areas where I wish GW2 eles were more like GW1 eles:
- Echo/Glyph of Renewal Meteor Storm. The giant nuking of Meteor Storm is awesome and the feel of the spell has carried over well. However, I really miss the ability to double cast or instant cast the spell with a cooldown like you could do in GW1.
- Air spiking. Eles seem to have some pretty awesome spiking abilities, but I also really miss the big single target air spiking that you could do with eles in GW1 when chaining spells like Lightning Orb.
Any other GW1 vets miss this type of stuff?
Okay, I made an eel and he is at lv 10, and pretty fun (go asura!)
Typos are awesome.
The best advice I can give for any new player that wants to run dungeons is to find a guild of friendly people who are willing to explain fights.
I presume it’s D/D for bosses, and S/P for trash?
And shortbow, only use to premight stack and to get around quicker? Or is clusterbomb best for aoe spam?
Noob questions I know. XD
Yea, you got it with Short Bow, but it’s also good for AoE trash when they’re spread out further than what you can cleave with the sword.
Also, if you want a really good, detailed guide to thief meta builds as well as how to use them, check out Chase’s guide on the GuildWars2Guru forums:

New dances and new emotes are one of the top things I hope to see available in the gem store…but I’m not getting my hopes up. From what I understand, the cost of developing these things is really high compared to any expected profit. I’m pretty sure this is why WoW never got the dance studio that was promised with WotLK.
I’m pretty skeptical about this “leak”…but it seems like just about every time in the past when we get leaked patch notes, they turn out to be legit.
I actually don’t mind having an elite trap, but if they want to fix traps, they need to improve the current traps instead of just trying to tack on another.
This is why adding a venom heal didn’t fix venoms. In the end, you still sacrifice too much dps to make a venom build really viable in PvE and you lose the condi/stun breaks that you need in PvP when you fill your bar with venoms.
I’m all for venoms and traps being made viable…but I hope they balance devs realize that this can’t be achieved by simply tacking on another skill.
That would be amazing. I miss jumping off cliffs in WoW and using slow fall. =(
Very nice! However, I wonder if you could get some condition on you then use Smite Condition, then maybe you could top this. Even without a condi, it still adds a decent bit of burst.

I haven’t played a person of color because I don’t think I could do it justice.
Obal, you, sir, are awesome and are one of the main reasons that Guardians have better resources for PvE dungeon builds/guides than any other class.
In sPvP, it’s an amazing weapon for teamfights since it brings such strong cleave damage to a fight. In WvW, yea, it’s not great outside of heavy zerging, but in sPvP, this is one of the best weapons any DPS guard can have in a teamfight since it makes enemies trying to revive friends fall down.
JI + Banish is a beautiful thing.
Recipes for stat combinations are not vanity items.
I was skeptical about this argument at first, but this is a solid point. I agree with this.
Not sure of the build, but the pirate theme and inclusion of Alestorm is pretty awesome. =)
I hate to agree with the crowd of forum trolls that go “OMGOMGOMG IT R FACE ROLL!!!1!11!” about any imbalanced build, but overall, most warrior builds do seem to have a lower skill floor and ceiling than most other professions. It’s not as simple as something like a spirit ranger, but it’s definitely no engi or ele.
I’ve run into eles like this before and while they do have some incredible burst when they pull it off (especially if they catch you in the right place with the fiery greatsword), they usually aren’t too much of a threat.
You can probably get by with this against more inexperienced players, but I don’t think this is a particularly strong build overall.
Part of me wishes that staff eles were in a better spot simply because I love the long duration swiftness I get from a Static Field dropped at the start. =P
I haven’t gotten much of a chance to play it yet, but I’m looking forward to spending some time in it.
If nothing else, the map is astoundingly beautiful. Kudos to the people who designed the looks of the place!
Yea, I agree with this. If it was up to me, I would have done elites before healing skills since some classes are really pigeonholed into certain elites with almost every build (ex: Engineers and Supply Crate).
Welcome back Allie! You have your work cut out for you on these forums. =P
All weapon sets are good at certain niches. Here’s a breakdown of Thief weaponsets and what they are best suited for:
Dagger/Dagger – In PvE, this is the absolute highest DPS single target weapon, which makes it popular in high end builds. In WvW, this is a strong weapon set for roaming, particularly when used with a build that traits into Shadow Arts for the blind on stealth trait. In sPvP/tPvP, this is a mediocre weapon. It has strong burst, but relies heavily on stealth and since capturing points wins the game, you don’t want to spend too much time in stealth (you can’t contest points in stealth).
Dagger/Pistol – In PvE, this is a pretty weak weapon set since it requires more initiative to stealth than D/D (Blinding Powder + Heartseeker instead of Cloak and Dagger with D/D). While the blind field is great for non-boss mobs, it’s a bit of a waste for single target fights. In WvW, this is also a strong weapon set for roaming. In sPvP/tPvP, this is also a very strong weapon set. The blind field from the pistol offhand is great for team support as well as for handling melee-based enemies in 1 v 1 scenarios.
Sword/Dagger – In PvE this is a relatively weak weaponset since it provides the lowest single target DPS of all melee weaponsets. In WvW this is a mediocre weaponset for roaming, but in capable hands, it can work well. In sPvP/tPvP, it used to be very strong, but it has been toned down significantly. It can still work well in capable hands, though.
Sword/Pistol – In PvE this is one of the best weapon sets for AoE and trash mob encounters. This is because you have a strong cleave attack from Pistol Whip as well as a blind field that nearly makes you immune to enemies standing in it. This is also a great weapon for solo leveling since you can just keep the blind field down and auto attack to kill almost anything. In WvW this is a strong weapon set for roaming due to the effectiveness of Pistol Whip. In sPvP/tPvP this is a strong weapon set that has seen increased popularity recently.
Pistol/Pistol – In PvE this is the best ranged weapon set for single target encounters. Melee weapons will deal more damage, but when you decide to stay ranged, this is your best option. In WvW this is a relatively weak weapon set that can be decent in some zerg encounters. In sPvP/tPvP this is a very weak weapon set.
Pistol/Dagger – In PvE this really only shines as a weapon set for soloing difficult enemies since you can stealth, gain distance, then use the stealth attack for high damage. In WvW this can be a mediocre weapon set for condition builds. In sPvP/tPvP this can be a mediocre weapon set for condition builds.
Short Bow – In PvE this is a secondary weapon for using against large AoE packs of enemies. The blast finisher on Cluster Bomb is also great for stacking might (from fire fields) or getting other combo field bonuses. In WvW this is a great weapon set for following a zerg since it gives AoE ranged DPS and also allows you to stack might in fire fields or swiftness from air fields with Cluster Bomb’s blast finisher. In sPvP/tPvP this is an awesome secondary weapon that is a stable of most builds since it gives you AoE dps from a safe range for team fights, a poison field to prevent downed enemies from healing, and amazing mobility from Infiltrator’s Arrow. The short bow is one of the main reasons that thieves are the best class for roaming.
I played XBox live for a good few years and I quickly realized the value of not having to be on voice chat with strangers. =P
12 year old kid: “I CALL THE SNIPER RIFLE! I CALL THE SNIPER RIFLE! OMFG YOU TOOK MY SNIPER RIFLE, YOU (insert vulgarity that would make a grown sailor blush).”
I pretty much gave up on my alts after Ascended armor came out. =(
So I use blink constantly. And I was noticing that I can’t blink on a bridge or to get on it or off. It completely ruins the blink. Is this a bug? Or is it simply because the bridges do collapsed at some point?
^ This could be a thread on the WoW forums, lol. Blink for mages was always broken due to terrain. I imagine that it’s a similar issue here.
(well, except that there’s no collapsible bridges in WoW)
I’m pretty sure they did that for WoW, but nobody ever used it. They still used TS/Vent/Mumble instead.
I think that would confuse players too much.
In PVE the warrior does a lot more raw damage with his GS (especially 100b). So if you like high figures you should use a warrior. The guardian is able to pull 5 foes to him which makes farming/leveling a bit easier.
There’s really very little difference in damage between war and guard and depending on the fight, a guard can come out ahead in dps.
Hundred blades stacks up a big number because it’s a channeled skill, so yea, while it does good dps, it’s not as uber awesome as people think it is.
It’s a legendary.
I’m all for getting rid of grind, but legendaries are the exception. The weapon is a status symbol, not a requirement for staying competitive or being competent like exotic/ascended gear.
You should have to put in legendary effort to get a legendary weapon, otherwise it’s just another shiny weapon skin.
I’m glad that there’s a distinct reward for people that have achieved so much…but there is a really big discrepancy between the helm and boots compared to what it is for the other pieces.
