Caudecus’s Manor was a different story, that just seemed like one major zerg fest of mobs and even following what people considered the correct tactics at the time ( I highly doubt they were) it just wasn’t fun, in fact difficulty aside I found the whole dungeon seemed thrown together.

CM is the perfect example of a dungeon where taking the right skills make the whole thing easier. As a Guardian you should take reflect or adsorb projectiles kills (Wall of Reflection, Sanctuary, Shield of the Avenger), as a Mesmer feedback and null field, etc…

People should be glad that ANet has left zerging to victory as an option for so long. In WoW, the wrong skill/class composition would’ve meant a raid wipe. Almost every class here has certain types of skills for every encounter, some more than others.

the other three friends were level appropriate and wearing a mix of green/blue I think.

I had to research and re-learn how to play my Guardian to support the group but post nerf it wasn’t enough on its own.

Caudecus’s Manor was a different story, that just seemed like one major zerg fest of mobs and even following what people considered the correct tactics at the time ( I highly doubt they were) it just wasn’t fun, in fact difficulty aside I found the whole dungeon seemed thrown together.

That is the problem. Your mind set is using guardian in supporting role. Despite what people say, support role is mostly useless. What people actually mean with support is actually Control and counter-control (mitigate). You are survivable, with large amount of reflects and crowd control at your disposal in addition to position reset abilities. You need to be in the front and dictate which mobs are hitting whom and when.

The correct tactics assume people know some basic game mechanics. New players tend to underestimate the disparity between the level of skill needed in PvE and in Dungeons. CM is by no mean hard. Most people in the game go through it just fine. In other dungeons, bosses will kill many players in 1 or 2 hits, dodging does make them trivial, but many people that turn with their keyboards and click skills can still do them very successfully when armed with the right utilities and weapons. It’s a definite learning curve.

If GW2 fails theres really nothing else. World of Warcraft, Star Wars the Old Republic, Tera and The Secret World are all the same crap. GW2 was the only thing that stood out to be different. It got 3 million people because it was different.

Rift is good if you have the time for raiding. The different souls really do give you tons of options in how you want to play… the complete opposite of GW2.

It also has to be said that TERA did action combat way better than GW2.

Also there is still: EVE, darkfall: UW, and the elder scrolls.

Coming from TERA, it’s a much worse game both mechanically and content wise. The only enjoyment I had was making money out of the auction house. The game itself was slow and sluggish if you had fast reflexes. The customer service was incompetent.

If you want to see an action oriented MMO, DCUO is my choice. If you don’t have an issue with SOE losing your account data, definitely give it a try. To this day I’m waiting for SOE to sell it off to some other company that can better manage the customer support so I can go back and play it again.

I don’t like saying this but, you’re wrong it’s nothing like Dark souls

You are definitely RIGHT ON topic, as OP said “in terms of combat, difficulty”. So I guess according to your logic GW2 is more like a casino, fair enough.

Your entire post tells me you really want to play WoW. That is exactly what you should do. GW 2’s combat mechanics allows for collision and aiming. I would not be surprised as players are more used to the combat system, more free aim abilities and encounters will be designed. If you prefer more scripted and managed PvE environment, I seriously recommend you stick with WoW or DCUO. Both games are mechanically sound and offer PvE content that would be more to your liking.

Thank you for raising a very good point (amongst other good points in your post). Playing GW2 dungeons has made me miss how smoothly and well-designed encounters are in WoW heroics, and how much less stressful PUGs there are.

On the one hand, you are right in the fact that I should go back to WoW. On the other hand, I think the concept of playable pandas are a joke (plus the monthly fee), and I like the implementation of most of everything else in GW2 apart from dungeons and WvW.

I was hoping to offer a dissenting view on the design goals and direction of dungeons in this game because some of the dungeons got it right in terms of the mix (for example, the Uncategorized fractal – where you fight the kitty creations of the Raving Asura – was one of the best dungeon experiences I’ve had in the game, as well as Solid Ocean fractal which was just gorgeous) while others are just pure hell (e.g. phase 1 of urban battleground fractal, and all of underground facility fractal, not to mention most of the explorable modes of the older dungeons).

But anyway, thanks for the constructive input. I’ll probably stick to GW2 in the meantime and just grind DE’s until they revamp WoW’s business model or some other MMO with similar quality comes along. It’s really just too bad that most of the dungeons here are not as fun as they are in WoW (for me, at least).

I think what you want to say is that GW2 has great artistic direction with dungeons. Technical execution of their ideas are poor. By all indications, GW2’s dungeons are the result of project management issues. Crunch time comes and the PMPs start to look for things to cut on their WBS to make the release schedule. First to go is always the QA, since it’s a case of “if the customers are complaining that means the QA isn’t effective, let’s cut it to save money; if the customers aren’t complaining, we don’t need QA, let’s cut it to save money.”

The devs have made it clear about a week after release the huge HP pools on dungeon bosses are a placeholder for more varied and “dynamic” mechanics. This game can be very twitch based, the way it’s built, it can be played almost entirely without tab targetting. As the game matures, this is the direction it will go.

WoW PvE is like GW1, the outcome of your adventure is entirely decided the moment you leave town. Your build will nearly completely dictate the outcome of your PvE experience, any exception would typically be failure in execution. This is also one reason why PvPers in WoW tend to look down on PvE players as that type of gameplay is almost like a board game, merits of success came entirely out of the collective knowledge of the playerbase and less to do with the execution and tactical improvisation.

For the record, while it started as a joke, canon Pandas have been around WoW longer than space goats.

Ahem: “Players are great at finding problems. If your players are telling you that there’s a problem, you want to look into it. Players are terrible at coming up with solutions for the problems they find, and most anything they propose should generally be ignored.”

This is a pretty good adage. Clients are the best at finding problems because they use the service the most. Clients are not good at providing the solution because they know nothing about building the service.

Newsflash, children go out of their way to annoy you. Do you think a sensible adult would bother with any of this? How you are acting now, this is what they want. That’s why there’s trolls on the internet. Because like most people, you can’t be the bigger person and let it go. Is it worth wasting time raging about some nameless stranger? Do you actually think you are helping enforcing justice for everyone?

Just politely ask the person to stop or move. And if they refuse just leave. If they use offensive words, report them. Eventually if they dont get any reaction they will give up. If the person acts like a child, treat them as such.

If people can crash others, this is more in the territory of game exploits. Imagine if I spam bells with TW up outside a busy keep wall in WvW, this would be no different than the endless tonic abuse.

The OP is right to bring this to attention. You completely missed the point and the essence of the topic. To read the OP’s post the way you did… you have my sympathies.

Twitch skill is part of the equation.

The other part is know how to cover your lack of twitch skills with your build. You can dodge twice, beyond that no amount of twitch will save you. During a fight you need to know what abilities you can use to do exactly what they do, make predictions and adjust to anything from downed member to fail.

Take the cliffside wind in fractals as an example. You can either dodge, time your way through, or know which abilities in your class grants you block, teleport, or stability. There is not a single class without a way to go through the wind.

While the game mechanic supports a fairly high level of twitch, most encounters are tuned to be very easily doable. While it’s not a game for someone with physical disabilities, it’s hardly a twitch game in the same vein of a shooter. Almost every attack has a tell. Inexperienced players are probably more nervous and feel guilty that it affects their performance.

Instead of getting frustrated at new players who are inexperienced, explain the tells and use group abilities that gives block, stability, or evade to help them. Dungeons ARE very easy in terms of skill requirement. They are tedious because of filler contents and design. Calling people with experience elitist is no different than belittling those that are competent at their job. It speaks volume more about you than them.

Your underlying assumption is that this game is about twitch skills, which as you hopefully know now, is not quite the case. As for your frustration, you can either help the new players get better by give them pointers, carry them, or kick them. Speak up, don’t be passive aggressive. When people screw up, let them know. If their expectations on an encounter is wrong, correct them.

Your entire post tells me you really want to play WoW. That is exactly what you should do. GW 2’s combat mechanics allows for collision and aiming. Dungeons: Cheating, Skipping, and Glitching

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

DancingPenguins.9875

Most of the parties I join either skip, cheat or glitch to get passed content in your dungeons—even in Ascalonians Catacombs, which is one of the easier dungeons. You added new loot items, (Wonderous Bags, and karma) to the Kholer boss for example, but people still insist on skipping it. I am not a fan of skipping bosses—or any enemy that I can get loot and/or money from—nor do I like cheating/glitching/exploiting. I want as much money and loot as I can get when I play a dungeon.

Even though I do not want to partake in these activities, in some cases, I understand why people resort to these cheap tactics. I believe there is a big difference between difficult and challenging. I think some of the dungeons are just too difficult (and in turn, not fun) and drive people to cheat.

Is anything being done about any of this? Thank you. I love the game.

Actually you have it completely reversed. Once you do it a few hundred times, it’s just routine and uninteresting, therefore people are more likely to skip everything and just get it over with.

In fact, I only kill mobs when I know the group isn’t competent enough to dash through things.

care to back that up with some well thought our reasoning?

The majority of people are going to leave low tier servers for high tier, I expect a big influx of people going to SoS.

Why would they make people pay money in a free game (Just make the lockout time longer like 1 month or something) THERE IS NO REASON TO MAKE IT PAID, it just seems like another money making scheme to me.

This i disagree…

Server transfer is a service not a commodity! I’m glad it is going to be paid, as now people will choose wisely if they want indeed to make that transfer. However, that transfer currency is in Gems that can be bought using in-game gold!

One thing different that i would like to see is different prices for different Tiers. Lowest Tiers even could be free to make players fill in those before anything else, and with a price increasing to the highest being on T1 tiers!

What is the logic behind making it paid apart from making more money?
They could just increase the lock out system and have the exact same affect.

It was meant to be paid, the game doesn’t pay for itself.

Perhaps you should tell this to LoL.. if you make a great game it will indeed pay for itself plus much more, you don’t need to rely on gimmicky mechanics.

So I see you’ve never played LoL. It’s a pretty interesting game if you ever want to give it a shot. Although you probably shouldn’t spend money on it, there are definitely more urgent things you’d need to spend money on.

It was also announced before launch that higher population server will be more costly to transfer to.ANet only kept it free because guesting wasn’t ready. This in turn caused a lot of population problems for WvW and kept more people than they’d liked from WvWing. With this announcement, there will be a bandwagon effect that will cause more problem.

In my opinion, paying transfers will create problems

in WvW

Posted by: DancingPenguins.9875

DancingPenguins.9875

It’s about time this happened. But I fear it might be too little too late. Servers that were once great have toppled under the weight of bandwagoners, the population balance has been made a mockery of.

I fear now that the face of WvW has been scarred forever by this, and the intention of the game mode will no longer be fulfilled. Servers were supposed to be of relatively equal population, and skill and co-ordination were supposed to be the determining factors. But now population is the determining factor, and since transfers are likely to slow down dramatically, it’s unlikely anyone in the currently T1 servers will transfer off, leaving a permanent population imbalance, and a ladder format not worth participating in.

Of course, this is not a reason to stop the implimentation of this much needed mechanic. If there’s any hope for WvW to recover, it will be a very, very slow process, probably taking years before the population balance evens out.

Well put, and I completely agree.

I’d even go further to say that the problem may never correct itself, as new players with an interest in WvW will start off on high ranked WvW servers, and thus the current high ranked servers will always have a larger active WvW population.

ArenaNet needs to actively do something to help solve the problem of WvW population imbalance, and stop crossing their fingers and hoping it sorts itself out.

They should’ve implemented paid transfer unannounced just like nobody announces layoffs in near futures unless their books are ablaze and CEOs on the gallows.

it’s simply put makes the dungeons uninteresting, boring and blend to run..

It’s just your opinion. For many people killing trash mobs is uninteresting, boring and blend to run

That would be the problem. Killing the trash mobs is boring and unrewarding, but skipping them is also boring and unrewarding. In other words, the parts between boss fights are so badly designed that most people simply don’t want to do them.

Personally, I find the mad dash and hide and seek part of skipping very enjoyable while spamming skills at mobs dull.

I would not mind having dungeons designed entirely around chasing down a running boss while dashing through a gauntlet of mobs and traps that involves more finesse than DPS the crap out of everything.

Imagine a longer, bigger, prettier Mad King’s Clocktower where you also have to chase down one single boss mob to complete and dodge occasional patrol packs.

How about a last stand dungeon of tireless waves of dredges surging over a keep wall you must defend utilizing kiting, stairs, terrain, and trenches.

These are much more fun than the current design of forcing you to fight trash.

New player starting to do dungeons

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: DancingPenguins.9875

DancingPenguins.9875

I will echo the sentiment here.

Open world PvE doesn’t prepare you for the level of challenge dungeons offer. Putting them off only servers to make the learning curve harder at higher levels when you are more molded in your playstyle.

For example, I know players that are used to turning with keyboards, clicking their skills, never tried many weapon sets or utility skills. While they are fine for general open world PvE at 80, they have a tough time in dungeons and jumping puzzles.

Often time I hear such players feeling frustrated because they were never exposed to the level of content and performance expected from the game. It’s like learning a language, you have to start when you are young.

Also, dungeons are meant for 5 players, while you are fine to do it with 2, there’s no reason to do so. Partying with others offers a chance to build a social network to make your game experience here better.

I speed run dungeons extensively and I’ve actually never had an experience like that.

My advice is that look at user names and try to start a conversation with your group and look a their writing. Writing reflects a person’s intelligence, and naming is the essence of one’s writing skills. Group only with people of intelligence, at least enough to know how to be polite.

Also, use your blocklist. If a person sounds stupid, /block immediately. It sames a lot of headache later on.

Much like the other recent thread that got locked, this not exactly going in a promising direction.
I think it might be a few weeks before you can ask this question honestly without it ending up as a lightning rod. It’s not likely people are going to be able to engage in a good level headed conversation with the posters clenching their teeth around every word.

I’m honestly waiting for a single well written or reasonable post explain to me why just skipping packs of mob without using any exploit is somehow a bad thing.

All the posts about how skipping is bad seem to jumped or skipped over the part explaining why it’s a bad thing and directly to explaining why people shouldn’t skip. It just appears people forcing their play style on others.

The way I see it. All the trash obstacles can either be hopped over or dozed down, each suited to different styles of play. All of sudden in the last few days there came about this notion of this “clearing everything” “orthodoxy” of dungeoning. Just thought it’s strange and incomprehensible.

Why is skipping a problem again?

This really confuses me. Why are people complaining about skipping mobs again? I really don’t see it.

If someone did a dungeon hundreds of times wants to skip mob because they just want the end loot, what are some legitimate reasons on why they shouldn’t skip? It’s no different than people running past mobs on world map or in WvW. If most players don’t want to farm every pack of mob for loot, why force people to?

Why exactly is skipping a problem again?

Must kill guards before yaks.

It would be another push toward streamlining WvW and reduce the amount of total participation as with all events seeking to marginalize casual participation.
