Make us re-play our personal story!

I would love to replay the personal story (I made a topic about it in the Suggestions forum a while ago).

I don’t think they should make us do it, if people don’t want to then that’s up to them. But it should be an option. There are many parts I would like to do again for various reasons, like not fully understanding the lore/history behind something the first time I did it, having to play with the sound off, or simply really enjoying it and wanting to go again.

I’d also like to re-visit Claw Island because it seems a shame to only be able to go there twice.

Why is Mission Control leader-only right?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Danikat.8537

Things like this are why I think it’s a good idea for guilds to have, at minimum, 2 people who can do everything and at least 1 extra person with access to key features like permission to change ranks.

It’s probably only practical for big or long-running guilds where it would be a big loss if you had to start over and where the leader gets to know some of the members well enough to trust them with those permissions (because you should obviously never give it to someone you don’t trust) but it’s important to have a back-up.

Also a way for those people to contact each other outside of the game.

I had a similar issue with a forum I used to moderate – our one and only admin dissapeared. No one knew what had happened and no one had a way to contact her because she just wasn’t ever online anywhere. Without her we couldn’t update the software, couldn’t ban users or modify permissions, couldn’t edit the layout etc. basically couldn’t do anything except bare-bones day-to-day stuff. In the end we had to scrap the forum and move everyone to a new one.

Ambient killer daily

I always find topics like this amusing.

I work for an animal conservation charity devoted to a particular group of animals. I spend all day working on ways to keep them alive and persuading other people it’s the right thing to do.

Those same animals are depicted in game and I don’t think twice about killing them.

The two have absolutely nothing to do with each other. What I do in the game has no bearing on what I do in real life, any more than playing Warcraft 2 means I want to conquer the world with an army of orcs. (Even if I could.)

1.) what made you choose and stay on the server you’re on?(guilds and friends aren’t a valid reason since transfers were free for four months)

I’m on Desolation. I originally picked it because it’s a predominantly UK server so the majority of players speak a language I’m fluent in and are online at similar times to me. I stayed because I also found the open world active, even before the updates, and most people are friendly.

2.) what will it take for the wvw players to get you into wvw?

I’ll do WvW as and when I feel like it. Probably sometime after I’ve finished my Personal Story and at least some dungeons, basically when I feel like I need an extra thing to do. Other players pressuring me would just put me off honestly.

3.) wvw benefits your dungeon runs, do you not agree that helping us get the buffs you benefit from is the right thing to do?

My server is already Tier 1 and usually has a lot of buffs up and controls a lot of the map. I seriously doubt one extra WvW newbie running around would make much difference.

4.)is it the repair bill that scares you out?(i know pve players with upwards of 200g, so the fact that they’re scared of a 10s repair bill is confusing)

No, see above for my reasons. Although I’ve also never had more than 2g at once so that doesn’t really apply to me.

5.) why would a risen priestess of milandru be impressed with your Sunrise?

I doubt other players really care as much as the owner of the legendary thinks they do. I get gear I like the look of for me, not in the hope that some random will be impressed by it.

2. As you level up crafting you stop getting XP for lower level items. To keep getting XP from crafting you need to craft the harder/newer items.

3. An African or a European swallow?

Is there ever a use for jumping in combat?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

Jumping in combat can be useful against the AI.

For example I discovered whilst doing Dark Reverie that if you jump up onto even a relatively low platform all the enemies (except the turrets) suddenly stop attacking you. The first mushroom on the far side of the floor area puts you about shoulder height on the sylvari NPCs, just above head height on the hounds and well within reach of the bigger enemies but they’ll all suddenly stop and walk away as if you’re not there.

And like other people have said the NPCs won’t jump so it can be a great way to put some distance between you or block their attacks.

But against other players I don’t think it has any use.

Where am i supposed to quest?

in Players Helping Players

Danikat.8537

Also bear in mind that you’re not supposed to rely entirely on the personal story and heart quests to level up.

Unlike a lot of games doing everything is actually beneficial here. The best way to level up is to use your personal story and heart quests as a pointer for where to go but make sure you’re doing all the dynamic events you come across, gathering crafting materials (if you can’t use them then sell them, you’ll make a lot of gold that way), getting all the POIs and vistas. Everything gives you XP so any time you skip something you’re also skipping XP.

Tarnished Coast (US) and Piken Square (EU) are the unofficial RP servers. There are small groups of RPers on other servers but most of them are on there.

If you only want to do it occasionally it might be worth guesting rather than switching completely, I’ve wandered around Piken Square from time to time randomly RPing with people I bump into and most are open to it.

afraid to start a new character....

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

I’m a 27 year old with a life and a career. I have 5 permanent characters and a 6th slot to make random extras. Never been a problem for me. Also it’s generally a bad idea to imply that parents have no life or career. Many have both and even the ones who are full time parents probably have a lot less free time than you do given that kids are a 24/7 job.

- For me doing the personal story again is one of the reasons for making alts. But if you don’t want to then you don’t have to. Unlike GW1 you don’t have to finish any of the story to access areas. You could ignore it completely if you wanted to.

- You can always just buy things for your alt at a slower pace. You only need 1 level 80 to be able to do everything so you won’t be missing out on anything while you save up for gear.

- As many people have already said dailies are account wide. I often find having multiple characters actually makes it easier because I can switch to one who’s already near lots of downed NPCs, or a crafting station or whatever I need instead of spending time travelling or money on waypoints.

- As for other things like new content being added a lot of it, like Dailies, is account wide or only needs to be done once. The only reason you’d need to do things like Fractals on multiple characters is if you want to try using a different playstyle. You can easily farm laurels or relics or whatever on one character and spend them on another.

Basically I think you should give it a try before deciding you do/don’t like the idea. If for some reason you do feel like it’s too much to handle you can go back to just using 1 character, but I think you’ll find in most cases you’ve misunderstood how the game works.

dye combinations

Danikat.8537

I like black. It’s quite common for me to wear all black in real life and I think it can look good.

But IMO it works best with fairly plain clothes. In GW2 it often either obscures the details or the different materials look odd together because they each go slightly different shades.

Its also a bit uncreative when you’ve got the option of freely re-dying your armor to hundreds of different colours (once you’ve got them unlocked of course, but dye drops are fairly common).

I have to admit most of the time when I see someone in entirely abyss dyed armor I just assume they didn’t know how to make it look good and couldn’t be bothered trying. Which probably isn’t the impression they’re aiming for.

I enjoy the dailies

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Danikat.8537

The problem comes when people try to complete the daily, instead of just playing the game like they normally would. So they finished their daily 1 hour into playing the game, instead of finishing it 30 min before they log off. If you are just watching a bar go from 0-100%, then of curse it will become boring.

Agreed. Even on weekdays when I only have an hour or two to play I don’t do that.

I’ll usually look at the daily when I first get on to see if there’s anything easy or worth doing first. For example one day I logged into LA and was planning to head out to explore, then I noticed that doing a jump puzzle was one of the dailies, so I quickly did the short LA one before leaving.

But most things, especially the ‘kill/gather/craft so many whatevers’ I won’t even think about until about 20 mintues before I stop playing. Then I’ll check my progress and if I’m close to getting it done I’ll finish it off. If not I’ll forget it and try again the next day.

It’s the same as the other achievements really. If you looked at things like the slayer and weapon master titles when you first got the game it’d seem virtually impossible and incredibly boring. But if you forget about it and just play you’ll find yourself doing most of it without even trying. Then if you want to you can finish it off later.

I agree.

I didn’t mind the original system but I’d never have gone out of my way to get it. Partially because it was boring, partially because unless you needed the coins there was no point.

But I like the new system. The variety makes it more interesting and also often easier (this morning I got 3/5 on a level 4-6 character without even trying. I was just running around levelling and getting to the next section of my personal story.

The rewards are much better too. Nothing you can’t play without (in spite of the current obsession some people have with getting all the Ascended items ASAP) and the fact that you only get 1 laurel a day means it doesn’t make a huge difference if you miss a day, but at least you’ve got something to aim for and a reason to do the dailies now.

Guesting is out of control.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

People should never be put into overflow on their own server. If someone guests on a server and they map is full, they should always be put into overflow when trying to join an overcrowded zone on the guesting server.
Simple as that.

That is rediculous. It was very common to be put into an overflow in popular areas before guesting was even possible. If they made it so everyone on their home server was always in the non-overflow it’d just lead to the game crashing and then no one would be able to do the events.

I agree that people on their home server should get 1st priority over guests, but according to the wiki that already happens.

Personally I think the guesting aspect could be solved by setting it up so events happen on all servers at the same time. Like the festival finale’s in GW1.

But that wouldn’t stop people from being pushed into the overflow. IMO the only real solution to that is either to reset the rewards to something closer to what the were before this update (and then sit through everyone kittening that they ‘nerfed it’ and have ruined the bosses) or wait until the massive over-farming we’re seeing at the moment drops the price of rares and ectos and the farmers move on to whatever the new hotspot is.

Tybalt was already a Lightbringer when you first met him. That’s the highest rank the Order of Whispers has below the Preceptors, and there can only be 3 of them.

Dodge is the easiest, fastest daily there is – it has shoved gathering aside, laughed at crafting, & so long as a thief with a spear can swim around, it’s the best. And you can be on a baby thief – it doesn’t matter. My record so far is full dodge daily in 4 quests.

I laugh at the idea of dodge as the easiest daily. Condition applier is obviously easier — with the right character. Using harpoon gun on thief I thought to do underwater and conditions at the same time — and completed conditions in < 3 kills.

I think the easiest has to be talking to 1 laurel merchant. Although I doubt we’ll see that one again. (I assume it was just there to make sure people knew what was available.)

I think it depends hugely on what choices you make and therefore what story you get.

For example most people seem to like Tybalt but you only get to meet him if you join the Order of Whispers. In general I’ve found the sylvari and charr storylines to be pretty good but I wasn’t so keen on the human one.

Also my only issue with Trahearne is the voice acting. He has absolutely no inflection in his voice at all, he says things like “If we don’t stop that huge beast everyone will die” in the same way he’d say “Hmm..it seems to have stopped raining”. (It also sounds like the actor was putting that voice on, so my guess would be he couldn’t do both at the same time.)

When I have the sound off (which is a lot of the time due to other stuff going on) I don’t mind him because I imagine his lines being said properly.

Well with the new system you never have to do dodge daily if you don’t want to. (Not that you had to do it before, you could always skip those days and lose nothing.)

Also if you’re bouncing all over the map to do it then frankly you’re doing it wrong. Yes some of the new achievements require you to be in certain maps but if that’s inconvinient you can easily skip them. (Alternatively you can go to the Heart of the Mists, through the portal to LA, out to one of the racial cites and out the gate and you’re there for free.)

But since the update I’ve managed to do the daily every day I’ve been on with 2 characters (and therefore 2 maps) at most.

The best way is either to look at the list when you start playing and work out what you can do easily (or are going to be doing anyway) or wait until you’ve done most of what you wanted to do and then check your progress. Unless you’re somehow not killing enemies, not doing events, not gathering, not crafting, not doing WvW, not levelling, not salvaging items, not dodging etc. you should have at least come close to completing several of them.

And if you’re not doing any of that then I’d love to know what you are doing. I’ve managed to spend an hour or two at a time doing things that aren’t remotely productive (mainly climbing the scenery and/or taking screen shots) but not every day.

Complaining about overflow and guesting...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

I think it could be either. During the headstart weekend it was more common than not to be pushed into an overflow in the starting areas, and guesting was impossible at the time so that obviously wasn’t the issue.

But at the moment there is no way to prove how much of it is guesting and how much is people on their own server all wanting to do the same events.

Importantly though I think it will calm down soon. If people keep rushing the events the way they are the price of rares and ectos will drop and that will put some of them off. Others will get bored and move on to other things. Just wait a while and the problem will sort itself out.

Which may be why Anet has not said anything about fixing it.

But you can open other boss chests on the same character, or switch characters and open the same one again.

World Fastest Guild Bounty Hunt - T3?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Danikat.8537

Joined my first guild in this game when patch hit, and it was some random guild that asked me to join. They’re small and nobody ever talks and they haven’t even started guild missions.

Why is it so hard to find decent guilds in this game? It’s the least social MMO I’ve ever seen.

Well part of the problem is that joining whatever random guild happens to be spamming chat is both the easiest and one of the worst ways to do it.

Aside from their little advertising spiel, which always seems to say the same sort of thing, you have no idea what you’re getting. But one of the things you’re guarenteed to get is a group of people who, like you, joined whatever random guild was first to ask and who have no real connection or loyalty to it or to each other, who are quite likely to leave as soon as something better comes along. All of which makes even getting a conversation going difficult and any other kind of interaction unlikely.

They also tend to be smaller guilds with inexperienced leaders who don’t know how to forge those bonds and get people playing together.

I’d strongly recommend thinking about what kind of guild you’re looking for – what activities do you want to do with them, how much time can you devote to it etc. and then look through the guilds forum here, ask around on your server, look at some other sites and find one that suits you.

I love the gear grinding Mike O Brian. Thanks for telling us about doing a dungeon over and over to get gear that’s clearly better than anything else and that long before release, I appreciate being well-informed.

So…basically you wanna do a dungeon once and get an entire set right?

He sounds like a GW1 player. For some reason, many of those players feel they should have all the best stats for almost no effort. I never played that game, so I don’t get it.

I was, and still am, a GW1 player and I don’t get it either.

Yes you could get max stat armor very easily in that game (as soon as you got off the newbie island in Factions and Nightfall). But the stats on the armor itself are incredibly basic. You get the armor rating, a small energy (mana/stamina) bonus and one or two extras which are at best the equivilent of 1st tier traits in GW2.

You can also add 1 rune and 1 insignia to each piece of armor. Using max stat armor without any runes or insigias is the equivilent of using greens in GW2, it’s doable but you’ll be at a big disadvantage.

And those runes and insignias are where it can get expensive, and therefore difficult. You can buy them from NPC traders, but the prices are set by supply and demand and most of the more popular ones can easily cost more than the armor itself.

They said before launch that there would be some grind in the game, but that it would be for optional extras, not a required part of gameplay. But a lot of people seem to be confused on what that means.

But really if you compare it to any other MMO, or even most RPGs it should be obvious. The big one in this game is that you’ll never find yourself needing an extra few levels for the next Personal Story quest or zone and with no way to get those levels except to camp a spawn point and kill the same mobs over and over.

World Fastest Guild Bounty Hunt - T3?

My guild actually found the bounty was too quick.

We had people watching each potential target so as soon as it started everyone waypointed in but they went down so fast only the first few did enough damage to get credit for the kill.

The second one was already dead, having been accidentally taken down by 2 guildies trying to hold him off until the rest could join them and 1 random passer-by.

I have no idea if that’s standard or if something went wrong but if this is going to be a common occurance I think the NPCs might need to be buffed to a) make it somewhat challenging and b) give people a chance to join in.

Considering you’re virtually guarenteed to have a group taking them on they should IMO be Champion difficulty. (And before anyone mentions small guilds I’ve seen champions go down to 3 people, including me and I’m not very good.)

Repeatable personal story

Danikat.8537

One of the things I really like about GW1 is that all the missions are repeatable. If I forget part of the story, or had to do it with the sound off the first time and want to re-do it properly, or just feel like doing it again I can.

It would be great to have that option with the Personal Story in GW2 as well. Some of the missions, like the Battle for Claw Island, I’ve really enjoyed and it’s dissapointing to think I won’t get to do it again without an alt. Others, like the first reunion of Destinys Edge I’d just like to see again – I hadn’t read the book when I got to that point so I didn’t fully appreciate it.

I think it’d be a relatively simple change too. Add a button to each page of the My Story tab in the Hero panel that recreates the green star in the world and lets you back into the instance and remove the reward at the end. The actual quests and instances wouldn’t need to be changed at all.

I was making my way from Wayfarer Foothills to Diessa Plateau, doing some of the Living Story stuff, when I noticed there’s a huge gate and what looks like a path lined with torches leading up the cliff opposite the Doylak Pass Waypoint.

I’m certain it wasn’t there before Living Story started, because the last time I was in this area I was climbing the bare rocks in that exact spot trying to see if the invisible wall on the edge of the zone was a straight line and if it was in-line with the transition portal on the road.

(Also because I’m 100% sure I’ve never seen it before and I highly doubt I’d have missed it.)

So my questions are: does anyone know when it was added, and does it have any connection to the story yet?

I need a name!

Its been 12 hours and I suspect at this point the OP has made a name. Or uninstalled the game. ^^ Either way, I doubt he needs help anymore. :-)

That might be true, but at this point it’s more of a general naming topic anyway.

Although, you never know. With the Asura I mentioned above I actually made her several times so I could try out different names and see if they were taken and if they suited her. Then I either cancelled out of the character creator or deleted her.

Fantasy name doesn’t have to be ‘fantastical’ in my opinion nor does it have to be related to the profession of the character. Unless it is a title type of aname they earned later, they got their names as babies before choosing what to do with their lives. Which is why I find some people’s names so odd. I cannot imagine what parent would call their child Rotting Rat (not the exact name I saw) or names no Tyrian would ever have heard of before.

Unless they’re like my main character who was named at birth and then not-so-subtly raised with the idea that she was obligated to fufil the role the name implied. Although in that case no one but me would notice because she’s named after her ancestor, my GW1 character.

You can also do a bit of both – combine a profession/appearence specific name with something else. For example I have a GW1 character, a pet focused ranger, called Beastmaster Kelvar. And obviously there he would have just been called Kelvar as a kid and earned the Beastmaster part later.

This is especially fitting for Charr (and Kodan if we ever get to make them) who will change their name based on their current situations. Usually their profession and warband.

Your message was surpressed

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

It seems to affect all type of chat.

It also has some odd standards for when to supress messages. For example I like to wait when I’m killed to see if anyone would revive me. I used to type ‘thank you’ into /say in advance ready to post when someone did revive me, but I found that even if I hadn’t said anything for ages having that message sitting there ready to go caused the game to believe I was spamming it and supress me.

I’ve also been caught by it in situations where I was going down and being revived a lot, or otherwise playing cooperatively with strangers and kept saying ‘thanks’. That one is easy to get around because if you vary the message even slightly it allows it, but it’s still annoying.

I’m not sure if it’s Anet being overly cautious or if it’s an issue with how the chat is programmed – maybe these are the only ways they can pick up spamming – but it could do with being adjusted.

I still think they should provide a bit more information on each server on the selection screen, especially for new players.

I had a bad experience during the first beta when I picked a server at random, thinking it didn’t matter, and ended up on the unofficial Russian server. Only being able to speak to about 50% of the players meant I was left out of a lot of the social side of the game, even things like events being called out in map chat.

I can’t remember now if you couldn’t switch during that beta or if I just didn’t bother because it was only 1 weekend but it made me determined to make sure I made the right choice for launch, which involved trawling through 4 or 5 fan sites to try and find out what groups would be playing on which servers.

They’ve made the situation a bit better, but I still think everyone should be given 1 free transfer so you’re not having to delete all your characters and start over or pay if you guess wrong at first, because it is still esentially a wild guess at which server would be best for you.

If you delete all of your character you can change worlds for free.

Alternatively you can guest on any world for as long as you want and can do everything except play World vs World (WvW). I would actually recommend trying a few servers out through guesting before you switch, so you know you’re switching to one you’ll like.

Edit: Guesting is playing on another server temporarily. You can do it for as long as you want but it’s not a permenant change like world switching. The only thing is you don’t get any WvW bonuses (either from your own server or the one you’re guesting on), you can’t play WvW on that server and I’m not sure how collecting Influence for your guild works.

As for why it’s because of WvW. If you could have characters on multiple servers players could create characters on their opponents servers and use them to do things like open up keeps to let the enemy in or waste all their resources so they can’t build anything.

Tactics like that were quite common at the start of the game when you could switch world freely and it was a big problem for anyone playing WvW.

Rng and black lion chests

The wiki is working on it: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Black_Lion_Chest/Drop_rate

Of course it’s a work in progress (we don’t have odds for the permenant bank, trader and merchant access yet) but with over 500 chests opened it’s getting to be pretty good.

Although IMO all you need to know is that nothing in there is necessary to play or worth buying a key to get. After that point it doesn’t matter because any keys you do get (and consequently any items that drop from the chest) are a free bonus.

Ruggy – That’s exactly the sort of thing you’re supposed to use the guild bank for.

Maybe in future your guild leader should deposit the gold into the bank and then each person can withdraw what they need for their tasks?

Slot skills for Asura Ranger

in Players Helping Players

It depends on what build you want. The important thing is to make sure your skills (and traits) all work well together.

You can find pre-made builds, and discussions on making your own, in the ranger section of this forum and links to other sites on the topic. (I’d give you some links but I never use pre-made builds so I don’t know any.)

Alternatively you can make your own. Start with one or two things you know you want – for example a weapon you like using, or a particular kind of utility you enjoy and then work out what goes with it – what will boost your strengths or make your weak spots negligable (or eliminate them, but you can’t be good at everything in this game and if you try you’re in danger of ending up mediocre at everything).

If I don’t already have a name in mind my fall-back stratergy is to think of words I associate with the character and then try translating them into other languages until I find something that looks/sounds good. Usually I try Welsh, Latin and Quenya but any language will work, as long as you can write it in the latin/english alphabet.

Alternatively I go completely free style – I start with a name, word or sound that I like and experiment until I find something that fits and isn’t taken.

For my asura (female) for example I started with the sound/word Xix and the idea that it had to end in a vowel to fit the lore (not always important but it was to me in this case), played around with it and checked what was taken and ended up with Xexxi.

Lionguard Lyns gone - not a fair warning?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Since the issue here is that some people didn’t read the announcements that were made I don’t really see a way around it.

Yes Anet could send the patch notes to everyone as an email or an in-game message (or several messages). But they’re not psychic, they can’t send each person only the parts they care about. And if they send the whole thing you’ll just not read that either.

As for not remembering that it was said last month there’s an easy solution to that too. I read that she was going to be removed, so I spent the commendations I had at the first oppertunity and didn’t get any more. I’d completely forgotten she was going to be removed by the time it actually happened, but I sitll had plenty of warning.

My main is a ranger. I wouldn’t switch but if I did it’d probably be to elementalist.

That’s based entirely on the fact that I have 5 permanant characters and other than the ranger the ele is the one I’ve spent the most time playing.

(If anyone is interested the others are engineer, guardian and thief. I’ve tried all the professions but those 5 are the ones I most enjoy.)

Is this reasonable?

I think this is why most people with multiple characters have one main/favourite.

You pick one character and make them first priority for gear. Instead of (for example) making sure 5 characters have exotics before you start working on ascended you focus on getting 1 character everything they need, and also use them to do the high-end content which (arguably) needs that gear while you take your time with the others.

Or you might never get the others top-tier gear, if you’re not going to be doing content that needs it and don’t enjoy getting it.

In part it’s because “OMG they ruined it forever!” is the standard response to any update/sequel to any game. And most movies. Probably books too.

It’s also because Anet tend to want to keep the meta-game active so whenever a build becomes too common they’ll change something to either make it work differently or nerf it completely. And then of course everyone who relies on that build and other players telling them how to use it is stuck until someone invents a replacement and puts a video up to show them up to use it again.

I’ve never done the monthly achievement before because it always involved at least one thing I wasn’t interested in or wasn’t ready to do. I strongly suspect I will get it this month.

I was never that bothered about not getting it, but it will be a nice change. (And a nice boost towards getting those laurel minis.)

Lore for Charr Guardian

I have a norn engineer. Part of her backstory is that she was going to be an Artificer (and still is in her spare time) because she’s fascinated by gadgets and potions, but she inherited her parents wanderlust and would never have been happy staying in Hoelbrak, she got talking to some Iron Legion guys and discovered there was a way to combine her passions.

I also have an asuran guardian but I haven’t really worked out a backstory for her yet, only that she decided she couldn’t stay at home inventing when the world is in danger.

I have a charr thief too but that doesn’t seem at all strange to me considering he’s Ash Legion.
