Some people are saying you will be able to repeat the dungeons for more cogs after he reached LA, but that hasn’t been confirmed by Anet (and depending on how you read certain posts has been denied).

But it also seems that they will all be available in the gem store from the day they appear in the dungeon. So if you can afford them you can just buy them.

Solutions to the mini pet issue

in Wintersday

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

I think it’s been established that a lot of people aren’t happy with the way festival mini pets are being distributed. There have also been some good suggestions for how to fix it, but I’m worried they’re getting buried in between complaints and complaints about the complaints.

So what I’d like to do is collect them all into 1 thread, and try to find out which ones people like best. So with that as the aim please don’t post in this thread unless you’re offering a solution to the mini pet distribution issue, an improvement to an existing suggestion or voting for your preffered one.

Also just to clarify I’m not referring to the minis you get from the airship dungeon and/or buying direct from the gem store. I’m referring to the ones that come from the gem store chest – the Snowman, Festive Golem and Airship (and by extension the quaggan which you use them to create).

Here are the ideas I’ve seen so far, in no particular order:
1) Make the minis unbound. That way regardless of how they’re originally available everyone will have a chance to get them later on by buying them. It might be a small chance (because they’re rare or expensive or both) but that’s ok.

Some people won’t pay real money for them if this is an option, but other people will buy more in order to sell them and overall it will balance out.

2) Make them either cost real money OR be aquired through luck, not both. This seems to be the root of the issue, as it was with the halloween weapon skins. No one minds paying real money for cosmetic items, no one minds getting them by luck, but paying for the chance to get lucky is too many downsides for the reward to balance it out.

3) We buy a chest and get a bunch of random items, as now. But we are also guarenteed to get a ticket item and can trade a number of tickets for any of the items that come from the chest. So you’ve still got the gambling element, but with a maximum spend. We KNOW that if we open 30 chests, or 52 or whatever amount Anet thinks is reasonable we will have gotten enough tickets to get the item(s) we really want.

First there’s a huge complaint about holiday specific weapons that were RNG on the Chest drops back when it was haloween. They changed that, now you cna buy them.

Then there’s the fact you coulnt obtain anything based on miniature pets which you can now get from doing these events.

So, to directly answer your own individual question; Why would you want everything?
Does it not seem logical that you actually already get something fro doing part of the holiday experience?

Why do you need everything and leave them completely blank with specialty items you can obtain for paying something if you are so obsessed or want to support future developments?

The problem is they didn’t fix the issue with an RNG for halloween weapons, they just transfered it to a different type of item and therefore a different group of players. It’s exactly the same system.

Although the entire thing wouldn’t be an issue if it was possible to buy the minis in the trading post.

Im not gonna buy a lottery ticket if I don’t win.

Technically you’d never buy a ticket, because until you do you won’t ever win. But thanks for adding to the discussion and keeping the thread relevant. I think the point to take away for that post is that Anet won’t sell, as many, lotto boxes if the customer never wins.

A method they could use in future is the hook a duck method.

I buy boxes from the cash shop.
each Box has 1x random festive item & 1 golden ticket (potenially tradeable item)

Golden tickets are used to buy Skins and Mini’s or whatever they have at the time in the event.

Using current event as example. You open a box and have a chance at getting a Mini but if you don’t get the mini you wanted you also still get a golden ticket. 20 golden tickets (or pick a number) = 1 mini pet = happy customer who didn’t feel fully screwed with box after box containing junk they didn’t want.

Yeah I’d be happy with that.

I’d also be happy with them just making the minis unbound so I could buy them later on the TP.

Maybe we can get an answer to that – what is ANet’s philosophy here? Will the rewards be similar from year to year?

I’m not dev so take from this comment what you will but looking at any MMO and even GW1, if they do have these minis again next year they will also have new ones added to the list so your collection will keep growing without ever letting you catch up.

IMHO that isn’t bad – I want to be able to expand my collection And I am sure I could save up enough gems from holiday to holiday. I just want to know there is a chance of getting all the minis or I won’t bother with collecting at all.

This.

5 years on from when I first found out about it I’m still hoping to get my mini Polar Bear in GW1. I don’t care that it’s absurdly unlikely, a 0.01% chance is still a chance.

Knowing I could never get it because I couldn’t afford to gamble when it was first available would really bother me.

I don’t know…I was dissapointed by the halloween minis because if you just buy them there’s no sense of reward. (In theory I guess there should be because I earned the money I used to buy them, but for some reason it feels too disconnected for that.)

But I don’t like the idea of buying a chance at an RNG. I think there’s a few ways to fix it.

1) Make them unbound and therefore tradeable. I don’t care how much people charge, it makes me feel like I can get them eventually and then I’m happy.

2) Keep the RNG aspect but don’t charge real money for it. Maybe put them into the presents you earn from doing the various activities.

3) This one is a little convoluted but maybe make it so the chests drop crafting materials, you’re guarenteed to get something useful but which ones are random and you’ll need to buy a few chests to get enough. Then you can either sell them on the TP or use them to make the minis (and maybe other items).

Basically anything but the current system when you have to gamble real money to get them and then if you get extras or ones you don’t want you’re stuck with them.

This is beyoned unfair and goes against everything Arenanet has done with the gem store.

Sounds exactly like halloween, actually.

Are these the minis that you can make buy getting materials from the tixx dungeon without spending a dime, btw?

Actually, Halloween had a Halloween Mini-Pack that you could buy. It gave you all three minis, and then you could toss those minis in the Mystic Forge to get a “super” mini. There was no random/lottery for them. You could buy them straight up.

These new minis on the other hand, can only be obtained through the lottery chests. So someone could spend 100 dollars on lottery chests, and not get a single mini. Or alternatively, spend 100 dollars, and get 30 of the same exact mini. And they are account bound so you are stuck with those 30 duplicates, that you have to either bank or destroy since you can’t sell them.

They are talking about the minis from the Wintersday Lottery Chests in the gem store, not the ones from the new dungeon.

from what I read you could get the quag from the giant gifts at a low chance

Do you remember where you read this?

It’s not like the mini-pets give you an advantage over other players. If you’re going to blame anyone, blame yourself for wanting to collect every little thing. Do you seriously think it was going to be easy to get everything little thing?

I don’t want everything, I just want the minis. They have no purpose except as collectables, so yes of course the people who are interested are going to want to try and get all of them. No one sets out to collect odd bits and pieces of a set, they might not succeed in completing the collection but that’s always the goal.

Guys. GUYS. Before you get mad about the main 5 minis: You can get two BY THE TIME HE HITS LION’S ARCH. He will then stay for like… another 2 WEEKS. Plenty of time to get the rest then see?
Also the other pets can drop from the Giant and Personalized gifts at a low rate.

I think most people are basing the assumption that you can only get 2 in total on this post: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wintersday/Tixx-Minipets/first#post1008858

Surely if you could also make the other 3 later on it would have been mentioned?

Or just make some sort of short trainer puzzle for those who are bad at JPs. A few timed jumps around a curved obstacle you have to run through to learn how to run timed jumps?

Quaggan’s Puzzle in Mellagan’s Grotto really helps with your accuracy. The Asura Lab one is a bit extreme for the casual learner.

The Asuran lab puzzle was either the second or 3rd one I’d ever done. The other two were Morgan’s Spiral and the Troll Cave one in LA, both relatively easy.

I don’t consider myself particularly good at jump puzzles, it always takes me a lot of attempts (I just failed the Wintersday one on the first jump) but I managed to do it eventually. And when I went back and re-did it a couple of months later I found it easy, I did it on the second try.

So IMO it’s just a matter of practice and experience in jumping generally. It helps a lot to practice outside of puzzles so you get a good idea of how far your character can jump and what kind of things you can land on.

Actually they’ve replied to a few of the threads about minis, but mainly to clarify that yes, that really is how it works.

The annoying thing is I don’t think I’d mind at all if they weren’t also account bound. If I had a chance to buy them later on, even for an absurd amount, I’d be ok with them being so awkward to get now because I’d be able to tell myself I’ll get them later. Just like I still feel like I have a chance to get all the GW1 minis (except the frog).

That would actually have been a much better way of doing things.

I’m finding it difficult to believe that after seemingly recognising their mistake with charging people for an RNG to get weapon skins and fixing that issue they’ve now just shifted to doing exactly the same thing with minis.

If they’re really so determined to have these RNG boxes and think players want them they should at least have an alternative way to buy or earn the items for those who just want one or a few specific things.

Something is confusing me about the music though. When I first logged on and was in the Trading Post in LA I heard what I’m sure is the Song of Time and Song of Storms from Ocarina of Time playing. It wasn’t part of the background music, was much louder and sounded like it was being played on bells. Anyone else noticed this?

(Also it was possibly the Sun’s Song rather than the Song of Storms, I always confuse those two.)

That would be somebody playing with the Bell item you can get from the Wintersday Boxes, you can play just about any tune as long as its in the key of C.

Ah, thank you! That also explains why I haven’t heard it again.

Minis - An Overview

in Wintersday

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

Let me make sure I’ve got this right (and it might help other players who want to collect all the minis):

Griffon, Golem, Princess Doll, Soldier and Ventari
We can get the materials to make 2 out of these 5 by playing though Tixx’s Infinirarium on all 5 days he is travelling around Tyria. Once he reaches Lions Arch and all the dungeons are repeatable they will only reward Wintersday Gifts, not the components for the minis.

Alternatively we can buy them from the TP from the day they become available in the Infinirarium onwards.

Snowman, Festive Golem and Infinirarium
These are random drops from the Wintersday Mystery Box, which is purchased from the Gem Store. They are account bound on aquision so the only way to get them is to buy the Wintersday Mystery Boxes and there is no guarentee which one(s) you’ll get and no way to get rid of unwanted extras except destroying them.

Foostivoo the Merry
This one is only available by putting 3 Wintersday Mystery Box minis and 50 enchanted stuffing into the Mystic Forge.

(For example 1 Snowman, 1 Festive Golem and 1 Infinirarium, or 2 Snowmen and 1 Festive Golem.)

Can anyone tell me if I’ve missed any and/or made any mistakes there?

I found the halloween minis dissapointing because there’s no sense of achivement in just buying something. But on the other hand I completely agree that we shouldn’t be expected to pay for a chance at an RNG.

It should be one or the other – a straight sale or an RNG/earned reward in game. Not paying for a chance to win one. Especially not when they’re account bound.

As it stands I think I’m going to just write them off and not count them as part of my collection since I can’t afford to waste money trying.

Did I read correctly that the minis can come from a box/present/chest that drops in game? Can someone please tell me the exact name of this and, if possible, where I can get it?

I only have about 14 HOURS in total to play during the Wintersday event (yes, that’s 14 hours across the whole 3 weeks). The only thing I really want is the minis but I want to make sure I maximise my chance to get them and I really cannot afford to dump real money into buying chests for a random chance.

If there’s a chance to get them in-game I’ll do that, if I have to buy a random chance I’ll write them off as something I’m never going to get and spend my time polar bear farming in GW1 instead, but it would be helpful to know what my options are.

I don’t think so. I’m still waiting for the update to finish but from what I’ve read, both official and otherwise, there are 2 groups of Wintersday minis:

5 which are made in the Mystic Forge from items you get for finishing the airship dungeons – one for each city.

A further 3 (I think) come from the special chests which you buy in the gem store. But you’re not guarenteed to get them, it’s a random chance, and they’re account bound so if you get one you don’t want or get a repeat you’re stuck with it.

Account Bound Mini's?

in Wintersday

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

Lol, and on top of that you can’t by the minis explicitly like you could during Halloween.

@ArenaNet: You do realize that if I could just by a Winter’s Day Mini Pack with all 3 Minis, and transform them into the Baby Quaggan in the Mystic Forge, you would probably get me to by the Mini Pack Twice to get all 4 pets. This way, however, I won’t even bother. I will not gamble real money for ingame pets.

This.

As soon as I knew there would be minis in GW2 I decided I wanted to collect them, and that I was going to make a special effort for the limited time only ones. I bought 2 sets of Halloween minis with real money so I could get all 4. I bought gems and changed them into gold to spend on making consortium chests to get those minis and I’m saving to get the Reef Drake off the TP because I didn’t get one during the event.

But I cannot and will not pay out real money for a random chance like this. It’s far more likely that I’ll be stuck with an inventory full of account bound stuff I don’t even want and no way to even swap it for the items I did want.

It’s an especially bad move at a time of the year when many people cannot afford to spend much on themselves because buying gifts, food, travel etc. for Christmas is taking up their available income.

I, and many other people have said it before and will keep saying it again – selling account bound items for real money is fine. A random chance at items is fine as long as there’s some way to swap the ones you don’t want. But paying real money for a random chance at items with a high probability you’ll be stuck with ones you don’t want is asking too much for too little in return.

I’ve tried them all, although some only briefly, and IMO the warrior is the simplest to get the hang of. Their unique mechanic is very simple to use and, at least on the surface, all their skills are fairly straight forward.

But if you’re just new to GW and not new to MMOs/RPGs in general I’d say go with whatever you want to play so you can get used to it. I’ve been playing 4 characters about equally since launch and recently added a 5th (ranger, elementalist, engineer, thief and guardian) and the only time I really struggle is when I switch from one to the other and have to get into a different mindset and playstyle.

IMO it will be easier to start with the profession you think you want to stick with and tackle the others later than to start with what someone else recommends and then switch to what you want once you’re used to the first one.

You’re unlikely to see other players in the Dream sequence because only newly created characters can go there. From the moment you finish it you can never go back, and since the majority of people have already created a few characters and played through the intros they’re not likely to spend more than a few minutes there.

But from now on it gets easier to find people. Go to the Grove or Lions Arch (through the purple portal) or look out for Dynamic Events as you’re playing, they tend to attract a lot of people.

Also Desolation is predominantly a UK server so more people are going to be online during the evening and weekend GMT time. That’s the best times for you to find people.

Anyone plan on buying the chests again?

in Wintersday

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Yes, i will buy the chests again. As i have for every event. People complaining about the chests and drop rates etc. i think are missing the point. It is simply a CHANCE to get a limited availability event item. Anet has always been clear about that. Some ppl will undoubtedly complain about making event items available for direct purchase in the gem store, if that’s the route they take for wintersday. I guess the bottom line is, there are many different types of players and you can’t please everyone all of the time. Some players, like myself, enjoy the sense of achievement of obtaining rare and/or hard to get items. I also enjoy the chests for the events because it’s a fun way to spend some gems and if i do get a nice skin or something then i feel very lucky and get to shout WOOT! lol. Others would rather simply play with their credit cards and thats ok too. It’s a game and should be fun for everyone. The thing that bothers me though is the sense of entitlement that i see in these forums all too often, especially concerning events, event rewards and the damn event chests. I mean srsly, it’s a game. The enjoyment should come from playing it. Playing a game always involves one of two outcomes, either you win, or you don’t win. The reward for winning in a game of this nature is the items you receive. If everyone were simply “given” every item then it wouldn’t be a game. It would simply be a midieval online fashion show where we all put on our gear and strut around lions arch. I don’t think that i or anyone should always be entitled to receive every reward and every item. In fact, i feel that it is the direct opposite.

I agree to some extent. I was dissapointed by the halloween minis because they were too easy to get and that meant there was no sense of achivement in having them.

But I also don’t want to gamble with real money for in-game items. I’m find with having to earn rewards, or having to take a chance on an RNG for a chance to have them drop, but I don’t want to pay real money for a random chance. That’s too much of a downside for what you get.

IMO it should be one or the other. Either a random chance or something you buy. Not buying the chance to gamble for it.

I find you’re much more likely to get obnoxious people in PUGs. I think it’s a combination of people thinking they can get away with it because there’s a good chance they won’t see any of you again and people being forced into PUGs because their attitude dramatically reduces their chances at making friends who will want to play with them again.

That and some people seem to confuse PUGs with runners. They join a random group because it’s quick and easy and seem to think that means doing the dungeon (or whatever) should be quick and easy as well so they have absolutely no patience for any kind of delay. I’m very honest with people and always make it clear when it’s my first time doing things, or I’ve never been part of a group that succeeded before or whatever but I’ve still had people invite themselves into the party and then effectively insist that I should run them through it.

But in my experience (which is entirely on one server – Desolation) they’re still the minority. You might get one kittenhole in a group, but everyone else is usually ok.

A mini polar bear in GW1. (Because I’ve been saying/singing “All I want for Christmas is a mini polar bear” every Wintersday for the past 5 years or so. And I am trying again this year.)

In GW2 I’d like a ranger pet. I’d actually like them to do a whole set of holiday themed ones, which should be available every year.

A special mini. But not as something you can only get on the 31st/1st (because I’ll be away.)

Actually that’s the main thing I’m hoping for – not missing out on too much that I want to do/get when I’m away from home and unable to play from the 21st-2nd.

Anyone plan on buying the chests again?

I’ve never bought the chests and I doubt I ever will. I don’t have anything against the idea in principle, but it’s not something I’m interested in. Especially not for skins.

I did make some consortium chests in the forge, and got a mini Karka out of it which I’m pretty happy about. In the end it worked out about the same price as if I’d bought the mini on the TP.

Going off map

I don’t think they’d ban you because in order for us to get outside the map during normal gameplay (ie. not using 3rd party software to teleport to areas you shouldn’t be able to reach) someone at Anet has to have left a gap, so it’s at least partially their fault.

I’m not saying they did a bad job. I think it’s to be expected that with a world this size a few little things like joints on invisible walls would be missed or go wrong. Especially when you’ve got multiple people working on it at once and even my limited experience with making relatively simple things on computer tells me you can get everything lined up perfectly, tweak one little detail and suddenly everything has gone wrong. Then you throw in a few million people and sooner or later one of them is going to think “I wonder what happens if I go down here?”

Also plenty of people have talked openly about getting outside the map and haven’t been banned as far as I know. During the Halloween event I jumped off the side of the Mad Realm lobby, beside the door back out, and landed on the Labyrinth map, but outside of the ‘outer’ wall, between it and the actual edge of the map.

Unfortunately this is the only screen shot I can find right now. It’s not great. The bit I’m standing on was actually a perfectly flat ‘ledge’ of rock texture that just ended about where I’m standing. Below and to all sides was just sky colour. (I’m pretty sure this is what the edge of all game maps actually look like, or a straight drop down.)

I reported it as a bug, I don’t know if it was ever fixed because I didn’t try again, but I definately wasn’t banned for it.

You can’t earn points in GW2 because the entire point of the HoM was to reward GW1 players.

I suspect the original point was actually to give long time players an incentive to switch over to GW2 by making them feel like they weren’t losing everything they’d achieved to start from scratch. But either way the whole point was you were supposed to put a lot of time and effort into GW1 to get those points, either earning them directly or farming gold to buy them.

Advice for azura jumping

in Players Helping Players

I think with all characters practice is the key. Not just doing jump puzzles and vistas but any time. Try to climb the scenery pretty much anywhere you can. It gives you practice jumping, an idea of the kinds of things you can jump onto vs. what’s just decoration with no platform to it and every so often you find a puzzle you didn’t know was there.

I recently went back and re-did Morgan’s Spiral, which was the first jump puzzle I completed. The first time I did it (at launch) it took me numeous attempts and a fair bit of luck. This time I did it on the first try and found it fairly easy, even though I hadn’t used that character for a while.

Keybinding and YOU !

Well a lot of people have talked openly and repeatedly about using gaming mice and the bundled software to bind mouse buttons to different commands, and none of them have mentioned being banned. Anet haven’t said anything against it either as long as it’s 1:1 binding, but I’m not sure if they’ve explicitly said it’s allowed.

I can’t see how using a seperate program is any different. As long as you’re binding one key press to one mouse button press rather than using it to create macros it’s fine.

A Little Player Recognition Please?

in Players Helping Players

Danikat.8537

Personally I would like the oppertunity to see more info on other characters. I’d like to be able to see what choices they made at character creation (maybe the entire ’I’m Xyz’ page of the Personal Story’).

I would also say the entire first page of the Hero panel, but I have a feeling that even though ‘gear score’ doesn’t really matter in GW if it was possible to see it a lot of people would suddenly get very picky about who they allowed into their parties and that would definately out-weigh the benefits.

But what I’d really like is a blank profile page that we can write whatever we want in, like UO had (has?). So RPers could do an in-character introduction with their background, both the choices they’ve made and stuff they’ve made up, other people could put what dungeons they like to run, or what other activities they enjoy, or just a general intro to themselves.

You can’t turn it on, or off, for yourself. Other players are always able to see the same info about you as you can about them. The only option you have in this regard is whether other players names are always displayed or off until you hold down a key (I think it’s ctrl or alt by default) or mouse over them.

When other players click on you they can see your name, your guild name and tag, your level (current if down/up levelled), your profession, your title if you’ve chosen to display one and if you’ve got 100% world completion a little star as well.

a quick legendary question

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

Think long and hard before you use transmutation stones on a legendary though because what you’ll end up with isn’t classed as a legendary any more.

Transmutation stones don’t change the stats of a weapon – they change the skin. It’s a subtle but important difference. Think of it like putting the circuitry from an old Nokia into an iPhone case. You haven’t just made yourself a cheap iPhone, you’ve made an old Nokia which looks like one.

If all you want is the skin and having the right stats is more important to you than the game counting it as a legendary then go for it. But if you want the achivement and badge and things you’ll have to keep the stats you’re given.

Unless you’re stock piling materials or something I can’t think why you’d want extra bag slots anyway.

I find as long as I send the collectables to the bank every so often I have more than enough space and I don’t even have all 20 slot bags yet.
