Server is full

They don’t have queues, no.

Server full doesn’t mean there are too many people online, it means there are too many people signed up to that server, both on and offline. You have to wait for someone to transfer out or Anet to add more capacity before you can join.

(Once you’re on a server if a particular zone is full you’ll get transfered to an overflow where you can continue playing as normal while you wait for space to free up on your server, but as far as I know there is no equivilent system for joining a server, there has to be space available for you to join.)

Leveling is just to fast!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

I agree that levelling can seem very fast if you’re playing casually – just running around doing whatever you come across and not paying attention to your level or how much XP you get.

Ironically if you’re deliberately trying to level and therefore paying more attention to how much XP you’re getting and how fast the bar is going up it seems much slower. I guess it’s like time; when you’re doing something fun it seems to fly by but when you’re bored you do more clock watching and it seems to drag on.

But as everyone else said levelling quickly isn’t a problem in this game because you’re not locked out of any of the content so you won’t miss anything. All levelling really does is give you more options for skills and gear.

Would the Asura ever go back underground?

in Lore

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

As you probably know the Asura were driven to the surface by the Destroyers, minions of Primordius. Even though they’ve achieved a lot in the last 250 years apparently their society today is nothing compared to what it was before the Exodus.

Which makes me wonder, if they could do you think they would go back?

When they first came to the surface they didn’t seem to like it much, in GW1 there were krewes complaining about everything from the height of the sky to the number of trees and animals, even the smell of the air. But they seem to have adjusted since. I was plesantly surprised to see how their structures fit into the existing landscape and trees and plants growing around them are tolerated. Combined with the fact that generations of Asura have lived on the surface now it makes me wonder if they’d even want to go back underground if they could.

Torches

Danikat.8537

Along similar lines why don’t you ever run out of arrows or bullets? Where is your backpack and the other 4+ bags you’re apparently carrying? Why can you fill this invisible backpack with greatswords and longbows when realistically even 1 would be too big?*

It’s one of those things where practicality over-rules realism in the game mechanics. In reality yes you would have to light your torch each time you wanted to use it (either with magic, flint and tinder or whatever other method) but it’s just not worth it for players or game designers to put that in, so they didn’t.

(* For the answer to those last two questions google ‘hammer space’. Not to be confused with hammer time.)

Audible skill Spamming?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Danikat.8537

He didn’t say he couldn’t be bothered turning it off. He said he shouldn’t have to choose between having no sound at all or listening to some irritating person spam the same thing over and over.

I can completely understand it being annoying, even when you’re only there for a relatively short time. I’ve been considering dropping Prayer to Lyssa from my human character because even though I like the skill I’m getting sick of having to hear “My Lyssa confound you!” multiple times in each fight.

Maybe they could add something like the anti-spam function for the chat where when you’re in town and not in combat there’s an extra cooldown added to skills that involve shouting something?

The 'Selfish' Player

I don’t think everyone should be required to run a support, or even part support build.

Especially since, as other people have said DPS can act as support. If I’m getting swamped by a mob and someone else comes along and wipes them out (or even kills off a few to even out the numbers) I’d consider that a form of support. Definately it’s being helpful and not selfish.

If you’re doing something as a group then I think you should take some time to talk about what you’ll need and what each person is going to be doing, but even then it doesn’t mean everyone has to be support, it’s up to the group to decide what builds would be helpful.

Why are there bots?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

You’d see a lot of bots in JQ. A lot of them are probably still there. Also in certain outposts if you’re there long enough you’ll see the same players come in over and over, run the exact same route to the merchant, the Xunlai chest, the flag by the exit and then out to continue farming.

The thing is they’re easy to miss at first, especially the ones farming in instances because you have to hang around the outpost for a while to spot them, but once you know what you’re looking for they are there.

“Best looking” will always be a matter of opinion.

I haven’t looked into a lot of the crafted/dungeon skins in GW2 yet but I know in GW1 I never bothered getting a lot of the rarest or most popular skins because they didn’t appeal to me. I have a whole bunch of Destroyer weapons I got for the HoM and never used or stuck on heroes because I didn’t like the skins.

In a way you could count yourself lucky if you prefer the drops because it could save you a lot of time and money.

All the resource nodes only move within a relatively small area and they’re marked on the map.

All you should need to do is go to the right general area, then look at the map to find the exact spot. (Holding down alt+ctrl can help too if they’re tucked away behind something.)

Soulbound... why?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Danikat.8537

I see no problem with soulbound items…it’s nothing new to MMOs, this is probably something only people with no experience in the genre would complain about.

True, but then being able to share things between characters at all is pretty much unique to MMOs. I can’t remember a single player game where that was an option. So if anything people unfamiliar with MMO’s would consider it a novelty that they can share anything, rather than being frustrated that it only works with some things.

I suspect it’d be most frustrating for people used to GW1 where (apart from armor) you had to choose to customise items.

I think it’s effectively another form of gold sink. It stops you sharing all your equipment between characters. Although gathering tools and salvage kits being soulbound has stopped bothering me because you need to keep them with you pretty much all the time anyway so it’s actually easier for each character to have their own than to keep swapping them around or keep them in the bank.

I agree it sometimes seems excessive though.

I was once (briefly) part of a guild which claimed they couldn’t enter tournaments because one of the members worked for Anet and they were apparently banned to prevent accusations of favouritism and even then they wouldn’t say who it was.

Have you tried changing server? I don’t think I’ve seen any of these issues on mine (Desolation, EU).

You do often get at least one person giving unhelpful answers to any question, (although that can be a matter of opinion, I thought “it doesn’t matter, play whichever you like best” was a helpful answer to “What’s the best profession?”) and at least once I’ve seen someone accuse another player of being a bot even when they were in chat saying “No, I’m not a bot, I’m here!” but generally people seem to be pretty helpful and friendly.

(And yeah, at the risk of sounding biased if you’re on whichever server 4Chan picked that probably explains it.)

Mad king

in Lore

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

  • Timeline: Kryta was established as a colony of Elona in 300 AE, but 58 years later it gained independence. We don’t know whether it seceded peacefully or through war, the fact that it did must have created a tension between the two nations for some time. Thing is, there has been a war between Elona and Kryta in Thorn’s time:

“The Mad King shall return to Elona shortly. I do not believe he bears a grudge against the Elonian people for what happened to his bride all those years ago, nor the decades long war that followed.” – http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Horseman_Jaysin

There’s no other mention of a war between the two nations ever again, especially not in the timeframe that was given in that introducory. It’s also worth mentioning that Elona was under siege by Palawa Joko even then, meaning that it’s doubtful Elona was fighting the Krytans as well… (King Sahlahjar of Sahlahja (a city in the Desolation) and his kingdom fell prey to him somewhere around 757 AE – when Joko finished his Bone Palace.)

Kryta seceding from Elona doesn’t have to have created tension between the two. Look at the former British Empire. In most cases (with the notable exception of the USA and India) the collapse of the empire was a relatively peaceful process which mainly happened through negotiation and most countries were allied with Britian almost immediately after gaining their independance.

IF Thorn was king at the time I think it’s safe to assume it wasn’t a peaceful process, but I think it’s a big jump to assume gaining independance must involve a war and therefore if only one war between Kryta and Elona is mentioned it had to have happened at that time.

The other possibility, considering this was during the monument building era in Elona (which was carried out by some very irresponsible and unpopular rulers) and just before the scarab plague, is that Kryta gained its independance in much the same way Europe became independant from the Roman Empire – it was simply beyond the capabilities of the “rulers” to actually govern their most far-flung territories so for lack of other options the locals reverted to self-govenance.

874 AE – Istan and Vabbi restore their clanmarshals. Kourna retains warmarshal ruler, Kunai Ossa. While Kunai Ossa refuses the Dynastic Crown, all warmarshals of Kourna are from the Ossa clan.

If they restored their clanmarshal system, it means they’d had it for some time before Turai Ossa became the King of all Elonans for a brief time. Before someone would bring up that Zola was a Vabbian princess (never said, only that she hailed from Vabbi – the region), I’d like to point out that Vabbi’s first princess was Amaki Voss, who assumed that title in 900 AE (even long after the approximate reign of Thorn the SotMK introductory denotes).

It’s not out of the question for the princess to be the daughter of one of those clanmarshals. Many famous native American women are known as ‘princesses’ even though their parents were clan chiefs.

Especially since (if I remember correctly) it’s Krytans who refer to her as a princess and they would most likely have translated her actual title or position into an equivilent one from their own system and language.

Will the Guild Wars 2 Expansion Packs Cost Real Money

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

Algreg you might be surprised. Some people have apparently spent over $100 on gems already. I’m not sure what they’re buying with them, although I suspect at least some are converting them to gold and that’s a big factor in prices rising so quickly (that and it’s a new economy).

On topic I would be very surprised if the full expansion packs were free. I think they’re using the same buisness model as GW1, where regular expansion packs were relied on to cover the cost of running the game, since there was no subscription free.

But at the same time I’m also sure we’ll get a lot of free content added.

Why did you guys buy GW2?

I bought GW1 because I liked the idea of MMO’s (the ‘play with friends and random strangers part’ not pay-to-grind model) but didn’t want to pay for one and my brother and his friend recommended it.

I bought GW2 because I loved GW1, even after my brother and his friend quit, and I liked what I’d seen in all the videos and other promotions.

So far I don’t regret it, I love it and a lot of the complaints that compare it to other MMOs just make me think I wouldn’t want to play those games.

What professions make sense for sylvari? Can they be necromancers, elementalists, guardians, etc.

in Lore

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

I think they all make sense.

Remember the sylvari start learning before they’re ‘born’, they emerge into the world effectively as adults, not just physically but mentally. I don’t think we’re told how long each one spends in the Dream (or physically growing) but when they emerge they’re supposed to have all the skills they need to start their life, including at least the basics of the professions.

Originally they would have had to learn it from the other races, but as I understand it even the Firstborn came into the world with a rudimentary knowledge of most things having picked it up from the Pale Tree.

Also there’s plenty of human elementalists who aren’t that old so it can’t take that long to learn. I imagine it’s a bit like a lot of real life skills – inventing new spells takes a lot of time, but learning to use ones other people have invented is a lot quicker.

If anyone cares it’s because I’ve finally gotten to picking an Order on my main character (taking my time is an understatement) and I’m finding myself with a bit of a dilema. Until I got to the quests where you have to choose whos plan to go with I was sure I was going to join the Vigil, but every time I find myself thinking the other Order has a better plan, and I can’t help thinking if I don’t like any of their ideas it might be a bad choice, but I still like their overall approach of getting on and attacking the dragons.

This is a question about how to report bugs rather than a bug report, so I’m sorry if it’s in the wrong area but it seemed to fit best here.

When using the in game bug report option how much information do we need to give? I’ve been relying on the screen shot to provide most of the basic information like which NPC/Item etc. I’m talking about and just put the actual bug in the text but it occured to me today that might just be making a lot of extra work for you guys in trying to find out who/what I’m talking about.

Do I need to say, for example “There’s a typo in the second dialogue option for Hermann, next to the western gate in Beetletun”? Or can I just take a screen shot of the conversation window and say "The response to this guy should say “Why, not Whay”?

At the other end of the scale I think the thief and possibly the ele have the most potential as glass cannons, which means if played right they can be extremely powerful, but it can all go wrong easily.

But my personal favourite is the ranger because I enjoy it.

Remember the Elite areas in GW1?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

Never got to do them in GW1 because of group elitism, if you weren’t the right class/cookie cutter build combo or you were new you didn’t get a party… so no I’d rather they not add content a casual player won’t be able to experience.

And definitely against any sort of PvP in PvE, no need to open this game up to griefers.

Sadly this guy is the type of person GW2 seems designed for. If the worst player in the game can’t do it, it’s too hard.

It’s a shame because too. Notice how he blames everyone else for his inability to do the content? I pugged FoW from the start with all kinds of different groups, we didn’t finish but we had fun trying. Eventually I was able to complete the zone and it was very gratifying. Not because of any reward, just because of the fun factor. That is missing in GW2.

I think elite areas would go a long way in GW2 as there is no interesting challenges to overcome now.

The problem isn’t that you can’t finish it with a PUG. The problem is that for the last few years it’s been almost impossible to get into a PUG in the first place unless you’ve got the designated speed clear build and proof that you’ve done it 100 or so times before. (Or have bought the drops to fake it.) Not to mention doing it as a speed clear means you only actually get to do one or two of the quests then run around claiming the reward for ones you didn’t do.

I tried many times to find a group willing to do it any other way and ended up doing both with heroes because there just weren’t enough people willing to put the time and effort in. Most people seemed to just want the rewards ASAP and treated actually playing the game as some kind of inconvinience to be gotten around.

Did Humans rule the world in GW1?

in Lore

Posted by: Danikat.8537

Danikat.8537

Humans were more numerous but I wouldn’t say they ruled the world in GW1. At the start of the game they had 3 kingdoms in Tyria – Kryta, Orr and Ascalon. Orr was wiped out completely at the end of the Tutorial and never actually featured in the game. Kryta was in about the same position it is now, except ruled by an evil cult, and Ascalon was already falling apart at the seams. (There’s also Cantha and Elona, but I’m not counting them since they’re not part of the current game world.)

Also you seem to be assuming all the other races have only evolved in the last 250 years and that’s not the case. The charr lived in Tyria before the humans did and have been developing their society and technology the entire time. The norn and the asura lived in different places (the far noth and underground respectively) but like the charr they’ve existed for a very long time and were designing their own weapons and other equipment. The humans didn’t have a head-start over any of them.

The one exception is the sylvari, who did only appear 25 years ago and do seem to have co-opted a lot of equipment from the other races to catch up.

In Game Marriage

Personally I think if they did add a marriage mechanic any changes should be fairly minimal. Maybe a symbol next to your name like the one for world completion and a small buff if you’re close by/in a party together.

I’m not sure about the shared bank idea. I can see where people are coming from, although contrary to popular belief it’s not a requirement of real-life marriage (my husband and I still have mostly seperate finances) but I can see a lot of problems with it, even without people stealing each others stuff. I definately don’t like the idea of a shared inventory, I think that would just make it too hard to keep track of things and it’d be a pain to have to check with your husband/wife every time you wanted to sell something.

Leave anything to do with sex out of my video game about killing baddies.

Leave that stuff in the sims.

Thats a bit narrow minded. its a MMO"RPG". Thats Roleplaying Game. We have a person in our guild who loves crafting. He comes with us on adventures, but he does it solely to get materials and craft. He doesnt really bother with the fighting. Hes got a 400 Tailor/Weaponsmith, 400 Leathsmith/Huntsman, and simply plays the game to work the auction house, make ingame gold, and craft. He LOVES this. Hes basically our guild sugar daddy.

That’s pretty much what my sister used to do in UO. I don’t think she ever saw most of the map, she’d pretty much only leave town to gather resources in the local area and spent the rest of her time crafting and selling items.

Coincidentally she also had a side buisness as a wedding coordinator. She had a bag in her bank full of colourful cloth, flowers and other decorative items and people would hire her to decorate a taven or wherever, make or loan them some clothes, make the rings and she could usually recommend people to conduct the ceremony and supply food too. And this was in a game with no marriage mechanic.

It’s the knowledge that I only have about an hour or two a night to play that makes me value the option to jump to my destination and get on with what I want to be doing. Even if I don’t always use it I’m a lot happier about exploring if I know it’s my choice to do it.

For example I’m on a few different forums for bands who draw a pretty wide crowd, everything from people in their 60’s to teenagers with the majority at gigs appearing to be late 20-late 30’s. But the forums are invariably dominated by people in their early 20’s.

From previous dicussions it seems that forums themselves are more likely to appeal to that age bracket who are more interested in the idea of chatting online to strangers and have the time to devote to sitting down and talking about their interests.

It’s mostly just a guess but I suspect one day they’ll link to cities added in future campains. Maybe in Cantha and Elona.

Anet probably put that area in to leave themselves a space for the gates, rather than having to fit them in to an already full map later on.

Should I Learn All Skills In A Tier Before Getting Skills In The Next Tier?

You have to trade 200 skill points to NPCs in order to get the precusor items for a legendary weapon, so in that sense yes you have to spend 200 skill points to get 1 weapon, but you’re not unlocking anything, you’re using them like a currency.

If you make a weapon, sell or destroy it and then decide to make another identical one you’ll have to spend another 200 skill points. But alternatively you could buy the weapon or the precusors (I’m not sure if the weapons are soulbound) and use it without spending any skill points.

Same with the Scrolls. It’s not a skill you learn, it’s an item you use in the Mystic Forge and to get it you have to trade skill points to an NPC.

Secrets in the Swamp quest chain

Does anyone know what triggers the Secrets in the Swamp quest chain in Queensdale?

The Wiki says it can be triggered once every 3 hours. I’ve been in the map for about 3 and a half hours and the quest chain hasn’t started in all that time, but I can’t find a trigger for it either.

I’d rather have them and have the option to not use them.

Most of the time I’m like the OP and want to explore everything and really feel I get more from the game by actually travelling places. I’ve found a lot of DE’s and things I missed the first time around when passing through an area.

But sometimes I just want to get where I’m going for whatever reason. (Usually because I want to meet up with friends to do something and don’t want to keep them waiting around.) And when that happens it’s nice to know I’ve got the option instead of being forced to run there.

Should I Learn All Skills In A Tier Before Getting Skills In The Next Tier?

in Players Helping Players

For the moment I’m only buying enough skills to unlock the next tier, so that when I’m a higher level and start seriously thinking about builds (at the moment I can get away with doing whatever seems fun) I have all my options open and don’t have to go through the hassle of unlocking skills I need. But I plan to buy all the skills eventually.

One thing I really like about this game (and GW1) is that you have so much flexibility with your build. I’ve wasted so much time in single player RPGs having to restart my whole character because I picked skills that sounded good on paper but didn’t really work out.

The stuff you get from the heart quest what is it used for?

At what level does armor look different ? and When can you dye and customize it?

If by ‘stuff you get from the heart quest’ you mean the items sold by the quest givers for karma then it varies. Sometimes it’s weapons or armor, sometimes it’s consumables that give you short-term stat boosts, sometimes it’s crafting materials or recipes. There’s a lot of different things and they all have different uses.

Armor doesn’t strictly change with level. There are many different armor sets with different appearances and you need to find them as drops or craft them or buy them from vendors and other players. More sets become available as you level up but from what I’ve seen you get a decent variety just from drops.

Are all MMO forums like this?

Not just MMO forums either.

I’ve seen the same with other games, movies, music, even magazine forums. Especially the rediculous "I won’t renew my sub if you don’t bow to my every whim attitude. One forum for a gaming magazine gets that every single month from the same people. If you believe them the magazine has gotten dramatically worse each and every month for the past 5 years or so and every time they say they’re going to cancel their subscription, never buy it again and never come back to the forum, and yet they never seem to follow through.

Allways 3-4 levels behind

I always seem to be a few levels ahead of my personal story because I get so distracted with other content along the way.

For example when I was supposed to go and meet the Order Representatives for the first time, halfway across Kessex Hills from the last quest, it took me about 3 days of real time to get there because I got so distracted with DE’s, heart quests and random exploring and I gained about 3 levels in the process.

At least at first the level requirements for the personal story quests go up one level at a time, so what I normally do is I’ll do a handful of quests until the requirement is a few levels above my current level, then I’ll go explore for a bit, do some DE’s, crafting etc. and come back to it when I’m a few levels above the story requirement.

Where are the side quests?

Have to say I was surprised by all the people complaining that getting a legendary takes too long.

I’ve been thinking of them as the equivilent of the Tormented weapons in GW1, where you had to either finish an entire campain and then do the elite end-game zone (4 dungeons basically) about 15 times to get one. Alternatively you can buy the precursor item from another player for a huge amount of money, which effectively just means you have a choice of where you farm.

But in either case they were never intended to be easy or quick to get, and I don’t remember ever seeing anyone insist that they should be.

If legendary weapons were required to do certain content, or had such great stats that it was impossible to get into a PVP team without them, then I could understand the frustration. But since they’re completely optional I don’t see a problem. If they were easy to get and the majority could have them within a month of getting to 80 they wouldn’t be legendary.

My thought would be, with such a wide culture base, it would be safer to be more open than closed regarding choices in these kinds of things. But that’s just me.

That depends on your definition of safe. Bioware got death threats (potentially serious ones) for including same-sex relationships in Mass Effect, even though it was completely 100% optional and if you weren’t interested you never even had to know it was there.

Where are the side quests?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

At first I made the same mistake. I wasn’t all that impressed with the heart quests because they all seemed to be “collect/kill/interact with X whatevers” with the only change being you had a few different options and a progress bar instead of a specific number, and I never stuck around long enough to see the DE’s chain (or didn’t know to follow the NPCs when they ran off).

Then I started not only speaking to all the named NPCs (and a lot of the unnamed ones too) but actually following up on what they said. When a norn told me her friend had gone off to rescue hunters in a grawl cave I made a note of which cave and headed off to find her, then there she was with a dynamic event to rescue said hunters.

It doesn’t always lead to a dynamic event, sometimes it’s just some interesting dialogue, or a single veteran enemy, or a chest, or whatever. Not knowing is part of the fun.

Basically they’ve taken out the quest log, NPC’s with a big exclaimation mark over their heads and other things that say “You are now doing a Quest”, but they haven’t taken out the quests.

I can’t see the point in an actual marriage system because I think for most players it wouldn’t add anything, and for RPers it’s already possible.

All you need to do is buy/make a couple of rings, write some vows, round up some friends and food/drinks (maybe use the guild banquet option), pick a location and switch to town clothes. Same way people used to do it back in UO.

And this way you avoid the gender controversy because players can decide for themselves and Anet doesn’t have to say a word about it.

But if they did add an actual marriage system I think, since it would mainly be for RPers, they should stick to in-game lore. So sylvari can and will marry anyone because gender is pretty arbitrary to them. From what I’ve seen norn and charr seem to regard marriage as primarily picking a partner to have children with so they’d probably stick to heretosexual relationships (I’m actually not sure if the charr even form long-term partnerships since they don’t live in family groups). I’m not sure about the asura and humans though.
