well, looking at it that way, there really is no class that should be able to wield one of these things (except asura of course, their strength scales with an inverse scale from height to the weight you are able to carry, similar to how a human can at most lift 3 times their weght, while an ant can lift 10 times their weight, with the height of the asura being the ideal ratio of size to strength, but i suppose that is besides the point). it could be that we channel animal spirits when using our melee weapons, maul makes a bear appear and swoop makes a bird appear, so that isn’t unreasonable. also if warriors can wield these things without any source or magic, we rangers should be able to too.
- i like my moa, named lawn moa
– we are likely to get pets with each expansion, like how we just got the reef drake
– we will always ( or at least for a long time) be the underdogs, which makes winning as a ranger much more fun and rewarding (if you win) and gives a great excuse when you lose.
– great at soloing in pve
– i’m an asura ranger, so all of my animations are amazing
– traps
my ranger is lvl 80, but i haven’t worked much on my armour set
my ranger is an asura, so its like, only 4 ft long, totally reasonable
have you gone to southsun cove and encountered the karka, if so you are acquainted with their barrage attack that will take you from 100-0 in 4 seconds (well, maybe just me). however now with the ability to move while blocking, we are able to safely close the gap or interrupt the barrage with our counter, and we are able to toggle the spell on when running through a large mob of karka and dodge all of their ranged attacks.
i appreciate the greatsword more than i ever had before.
we’re gonna keep the ranger all to ourselves (really play the class, and if you like it, continue to play it)
no, they hotfixed a ranger bug, this is worthy of thanks
aaaaand the traps are back to normal
thanks Anet
the blocking until an enemy is in range is a really cool feature, didn’t know this.
i wonder if they will only let warriors, thiefs, and ranger equip the quiver, as it doesnt make sense for most of the other classes.
also would have preferred that they made the quiver an offhand weapon for the bow just for thematic reasons, but that could just be me.
nice, thanks for the update
im still a bad ranger, but i agree with this thread so far
meh, its a step in the preferred direction, cant complain
i agree with the op, and even to follow up they gave a quick response saying they’re still working on the ranger, you can perhaps be a little dissapointed, but the outrage is uncalled for.
thanks for the reply jon
if we are talking viability, necro is at least equal if not more viable than the ranger, but that is beside the point. play a class because you like the class, disregard viability.
ya, i’ve definitely found this to be true, mostly due to the fact that i’m not a very skilled ranger. however what annoys me more is the fact that if i do survive the initial burst and get the chance to go on the offensive, the thief can just disengage with stealth, i as a ranger only have the option to tie or lose, which is most annoying.
i turn off auto attack for my weapons in pvp. you may end up wearing out your ‘1’ key, but you can choose to simply not attack this way.
Ranger Pets are Awesome -but how about giving the player the choice for different play styles?

i have a moa named lawn moa, thus all votes saying pets are bad are invalidated.
i agree with electro
so, are they going to be making content like this every month?
i think the axe off-hand is good as it is, i feel the axe main-hand needs something, but im not quite sure what. a damage buff might work, but its kinda a boring buff
my idea involves removing our current 3rd downed skill and replacing it with a new skill called ‘primal connection’ or something to that effect. this skill when used would revive your pet, and give you manual control over them, putting yourself in the place of your pet and getting the pets 4 skills available to you. the downed ranger would continue to cast the other spells whenever they were off cooldown and would try to revive them-self after not being targeted for a certain amount of time. you as the pet could also opt to go up to your ranger and help rez him.
this would probably be the most op downed skill in the game, but i would be endlessly entertained by it, any thoughts?
i support ranger pet synergy. i dont have much useful input, but this is definitely the vision of a ranger i would like to see in the game.
but, were all probably on different servers
i think its mainly for the aoe and combo field, for dueling i think the dagger is very good, but not against groups
you could put quivers in the offhand slot on the bow, and it would appear overtop of the back slot when you equipped the bow.
If they were either statless/had an option to not have them appear then i support this 100% I think it’d also be cool if by having a quiver equipped you could change the last 3 (ok maybe just 2) abilities on your bow skills, now THAT would be even cooler!!
alternatively the quiver could have a small bonus effect that effected the first skill, like giving all projectiles a 100% chance to be a combo finisher, increasing projectiles speed, a guaranteed critical attack(20 second cooldown) ect.
i am using a similar set up right now, here are my tips:
for the longbow, i go 20 points into marksmanship for the piercing arrows, i really like this and it spices up the longbow a bit by encouraging you to use good positioning.
i also like 15 points in wilderness survival for the endurance regeneration and protection gained from rolling. using the 1h sword is really dangerous because it offers little defense, so having your dodge up often will be helpful (i know the rooting issue with the 1h sword can make dodges sometimes unreliable, but it is still worth it)
you could put quivers in the offhand slot on the bow, and it would appear overtop of the back slot when you equipped the bow.
it might involve to much micro if we had access to the 3 skills the pets have(im not counting the auto skill). they could potentially let us choose which skill to use for our f2 skills, but i don’t think its a priority
in time it will probably be an option in the cash shop to buy unique spell skins for different professions from the bltc
all ranger weapons are slightly underpowered because our pets are supposed to be dealing a large portion of the damage, so rather than buff the weapons and take away our class’s unique mechanic, buff the pets to deal damage more consistently.
if anyone has doubts, go visit the jail in rata sum, and wait for the dialogue to trigger, you wont be disappointed

you should play a Asura ranger an use the 1h sword, that really gets the yoda feeling across too.
^ this, i dont no longer care if the 1h sword is viable or unusable, i am determined to use it
from what i have heard, trapper is probably the best way to go, i really liked shortbow and quickening zephyer before the short bow nerf as if your opponent ever turned away you could quickly stack 13 stacks of bleeding on them, whith the nerf you can get up to around 8, which is still ok. shortbow also has alot of condition damage on its other skill, thus i would suggest it.
the only weapons i dont see being to useful would the the longbow, great sword, and off-hand axe, but really any of these will work with practice.
I like to believe that i conjure the arrows… so i’d rather NOT have a quiver..
ah, but they could make it so that when you equipped a bow, the quiver would suddenly appear on your back, that way you could have conjured arrows along with a conjured quiver, thus by putting more conjuring on your conjuring, you can conjure when you conjure.
drake – im with stupid
murrello – im with ugly
moa – lawn moa
actually they have different teams for holiday events and balance/bug fixes, so we could expect them to keep on track with their current schedule. if they do have big changes in mind to change the ranger, don’t expect it all to be in one patch. it is easier to catch bugs by patching in small increments.
asura is my pick, they have awesome acrobatic animations while most of the other classes’ animations all feel the same
it might just be a thematic restriction, when i look at a devourer or spider, i kinda expect them to be melee pets, let alone have a range. even their current range seems a little long, i almost expect a range closer to 600
im not a pro ranger, just fyi
you will have to work quite hard, but you can split even with the other average players in pvp, just dont expect it to be easy, and some pro players of other classes will still stomp you . play the class, and if you like the playstyle, go with it in hopes of future buffs
enjoy your ranger
ive had a similar experience, only with explosives and ettins in place of zombies, it was quite hilarious actually, but we have a dev saying their working on it, thats all we can ask for
ive been going for 6 hours, why cant i do it
neat tip, if you trait for the healing skills to give vigor, the regen from the spring will continue to reapply vigor and give vigor to allies.
if your soloing the choice is yours, but in a group definitely go with the spring imo.
i prefer entangle myself, only because i never position myself right for the spirit.
yes, i can confirm this
yikes, might have to actually try one of the boars more thoughly now
well, im not any good at pvp, but i might know how he did a bit of this.
– ranger can trait so they get 3s of protection when the dodge in combat.
– rangers have easy access to 50% increased endurance regeneration in traits
– rangers can trait to have their heal skills apply vigor, this is continually applied by healing spring, which lets them dodge more, which lets them get more protection
– fern hound does give regen on its f2 ability
there are probably alot of things i missed though
The HoM pets have the same skills as non-HoM counterparts to keep the game balanced for everyone.
Also, the 4 boars appear to have the same skill, but each boar has a different set of items they can forage. One forages damage items, one forages control items, etc. The tooltip does not include this.
ah, did not know that about the boars, i still think the active is under powered though
