most DMs will have intelligent enemies actively avoid characters that are built like traditional MMO tanks

Meanwhile it’s also the opposite in GW2, as the mobs will actively seek out characters with higher toughness, which is why mobs seem to hate warriors, guards, and ranger’s bears.
Then again, aggro is also determined by DPS and location, so it all really depends on the given situation.

"Swirling Mists"

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

DocZed.6973

The Revenant’s Adept and Master minor traits in the Invocation line revolve around orbs made out of the Mists circling around you. The Adept minor forms the orb every time you use a skill that costs energy on a one second internal cooldown. The Master minor makes it so the healing effectiveness is increased and that they all return to the Revenant.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Swirling_Mists

My question, to the players that have had the chance to play the PAX/Rezzed demos, have any of you had a chance to play around with this mechanic?

1) Do they spawn just where they are or follow the Revenant in a fixed radius? Are they even capable of being used by the Revenant without the Master minor (ergo for teammates)?
2) Do they have any uses besides for healing (as mentioned in the Master minor)? Do they heal allies or damage enemies? What do they do exactly?
3) Is there a hard-cap or duration attached to these orbs?
4) Do they have enough potential to go 4 into Invocation for them (minus the quicker Legend Swap and the Masters), or are they just a nice little bonus? Are they even a nice bonus or negligible?

I realize a lot of potential cannot be determined from the demo alone, but I’ve been aching for information about these two traits since the Ready-Up and they didn’t have either traits equipped during it.

Those two traits are kind of selling points to me for the Revenant. Even in a DPS spec, I could be dropping mini-health kits for my allies or getting mini-heals just for swapping legends, on top of regaining energy.
Passive support is an idea that appeals to me very much. I love running traits like “Spotter” or “Battle Presence”, so I think you can understand why “Swirling Mists” is really appealing to me.

Anyway, I’d prefer NOT to hear any speculation, as I am dying for cold, hard facts around these two traits, but I’d welcome talk around this trait.

Thanks in advance

I mean, what had Mallyx to do with conditions?

It’s not as much that Mallyx had to do with conditions, it’s more along the lines of a condition spec borrowing inspiration from Mallyx’s attacks from the first game.
Banish Enchantment is a boon strip with the same name.
Unyielding Tormet Anguish is kind of funny. The new skill shadow-steps folks away while the old skill resurrected the summons that Mallyx made during the fight. Unyielding Tormet Anguish instead borrows from “Shadow Smash” which deals a hefty amount of damage and randomly shadowsteps you.
Mallyx’s heal works like “Consume Torment”
His other two skills are new, the elite channel and the Resistance skill.

I feel like Scarlet being an engineer does limit what a Revenant could possibly do with her, unless we’re whipping around magical grenades and summoning Steam Hulks.
Most of her insight into the Leylines were given to her by the Eternal Alchemy, so I don’t see a lot of lyeline related skills.

Tome of Knowledge and the Revenant

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: DocZed.6973

DocZed.6973

I’ll be insta-80’ing the Revenant, but I’m restricting myself to playing through the Personal Story and Season 2 to learn the class before I take him into any cooperative/competitive content.
It’ll grab me some first-hand experience with the class, some waypoints to begin with for quick-travel and starting Map Completion later on, bombing rewards like Black Lion Keys and more ToK’s, and lastly a refresher course with S2’s story.

I agree with all the folk saying you should be able to ToK your Revenant, since OPs argument can be carried over to ANY class (not just Revenant), but I’d also urge folk to practise a bit before jumping into cooperative/competative.
Based on the replies we’ve received in the thread so far, I’m not in the least worried. It’s the player’s skill, not the class, and the players in this thread seem to more than capable of playing a new class.

River Rafting

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: DocZed.6973

DocZed.6973

As disgusting as it is to say, I’d want it to be like the raft mini-game from another MMORPG called “Mabinogi”.

Players would group up and ride a large raft down a river. Some players would dedicate to steering the raft, the melee/tanky players would attack any enemies that would board the raft to attack the driver, and ranged characters would hit enemies on the shore-line before they tried to board. Players would earn rewards at the end for the amount of enemies killed.

Much like Blaeys said (I didn’t read your reply until after lol), it could be a pretty neat activity that offers more than just a steady ride down a river.
Maybe it could be instanced in an Adventure?

EDIT: Maybe it could be like Dajkah Inlet from GW1. A survival-based thing where you earn time by killing enemies.

Revenant Armor Unlocked?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: DocZed.6973

DocZed.6973

That argument could be used for any of the profession specific starting armor.

For example:
If wearing a Mesmer mask is part of the lore then Mesmers won’t be able to wear outfits, except for outfits specially made for them.

At any rate, it will only be a few minutes after the expansion starts before there will be warriors and guardians running around blindfolded so I wouldn’t worry too much about lore and blindfolds.

Since it’s impossible for the blindfold to be Revenant-Specific, I hope that the Revenant closes his eyes during combat like the original Ritualist did.
You might have been able to always hide a Ritualist blindfold but they would close their eyes when in combat, always closed off to the physical world and focused.
Little details like that really feel the biggest.

Have you even seen any of the videos about the demo released?

I didn’t see many people die to the wyvern even when it was flying around dropping fire fields, and you can just glide back up to the ledge after being knocked down.
Unless there are points of the fight where the up-drafts are removed, just stand out of the fire and you’ll be fine.

That’s not to say that later Wyverns won’t be more difficult, of course, as they mentioned there would be others. And harpoon guns…

There will probably be one or two initial closed beta tests, probably with a set of selected players and then one or two with a wider selection, maybe with a sign-up sheet.
I’m sure they’re at a point where they no longer need to do stress tests, so the closed betas might be more closed than we’d like, likely with embargo like we saw with the YouTubers. They’ll want to test the new features but they’ll also want to keep us excited and guessing.

That’s my take, anyway. Official feedback will have me checking the GW2 homepage like five times a day after the PAX demo.

Revenant OP? Why?

Hammers do poor damage…
——- snip —-—
Mace/Axe looks fun, but I have a feeling it’ll only get solid play if it’s like sword for warriors and scales well with both power AND condition damage, so that it can be ran as a Celestial or Carrion build. Beyond that, their combat potency seems rather low.

For the hammers on revenant, don’t forget, they’re all wearing celestial and two whole trait lines weren’t available, particularly the power-tree.
Hammer damage might seem mediocre right now, but they aren’t even geared/traited for a power weapon.

As they were wearing full celestial in the demo, celestial mace/axe might not work if you think they already seem weak. You’ll probably have to mix and match celestial gear with other gear or, as you said, run carrion or another condi-spec.

The Revenant paradox

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: DocZed.6973

DocZed.6973

If Revenant gets any mention in the expansion, I’m sure it’s mostly going to focus on Rytlock’s return/revival and subsequent transformation into a Revenant, rather than the entire profession’s emergence. The story of Heart of Thorns is focuses around Modremoth, not the Revenant.

Rytlock may be the first Revenant to make a splash in the Living World, but I doubt he grandfathered the entire profession. As they’ve said in what few comments they’ve given, the profession may be “new” gameplay wise but there are instances of spirit communes all throughout Tyria’s history. They didn’t need to explicitly explain the emergence of the Guardian or Engineer professions (the two “new” professions at initial release), just slight nods to them through in-game quotes such as saying the Engineer derives from Charr and Asuran tactics or that the Guardian is a concoction of Elonian protection magics, a dash of monk, and an extra helping of heavy armor. We never had a story segment devoted to explaining either class so I don’t see why any segment would be pure focuses on explaining Revenant’s origin (minus Rytlock’s own return).

I serious doubt the Revenant profession as a whole will have a large impact on the Heart of Thorns storyline. We may see a few important faces that just so happen to be Revenants, but it’s more about their character than the Revenant-Wrapper they find themselves in.

If I’m wrong… well, that’ll be disappointing.

Preordering the expansion

DocZed.6973

Is it possible for any ANet employee to let us know when HoT will be available for pre-ordering from stores? I keep checking in to my local store but they have no news of it as of yet.

Keeping in mind that pre-ordering date has little bearing on release date.

AngryJoe’s interview, which took place last weekend, said they were more focuses on Closed Beta and the PAX previews at the moment and won’t be giving prices or dates until they get closer to release.
When you hear the news that Closed Beta has ended, keep your ears open for the Open Beta as they might be ready to release the information about dates and prices near then.
They might do pre-order weekends like they did for GW2’s initial release, hopefully a head-start as well.

I’m thinking Knights Armor with Zerk accessories if Hammer is decent, if not I’ll roll a condi-set.

I’m not entirely worried about Rev’s medium health with life-steal, 2 slotted heals, and the Invocation line dropping those health orbs for you and party members every time you use an energy consuming skill (which is everything besides for the AA).
Kinda worried because I don’t think the devs were using it in their showcase, I never actually saw those Mist Orbs, so it’s just wishful thinking.
I think raw damage and armor is what I should focus on unless Revenant is golden for conditions.

Revenant's Hammer Auto-Attack...

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: DocZed.6973

DocZed.6973

That, or the swinging animation should be less physical and more magical, like Guardian’s Staff.

That’s exactly what the developers DON’T want, as stated many, many times during the Revenant’s teaser episode of POI.
They want the Revenant to be a brutal, very physical magic user, and they want to encourage a brawler playestyle. They WANT the Revenant to swing it like a regular hammer.

As the animation is right now, I think I prefer it.
In the beginning I was a little upset that the hammer was a ranged weapon, but now that I’ve seen the animation for the AA being very physical I’m looking forward to maining a hammer. Even when I’m ranging with enemies in my face, I can at least pretend I’m smacking them since it’s piercing AoE anyway.

As for the projectile, on the other hand, I’m jumping on the “I want to throw a ghostly version of my current hammer skin” train.

Question being, can I expect a physical copy of ‘Heart of Thorns’? In Canada?
I’m sure it’s the last thing on people’s minds but it would be nice to add to my shelf.

Can I remind everyone that the heal skill has a 30s cooldown?
I’ve seen like a dozen posts saying that the heal has no cooldown.
