OK, whinge on.

One of my two accounts is getting spammed every 2 or 3 minutes today, irrespective of what character I’m on or where. That’s bad enough, but what really irks me is that every message has one of a couple of URLs in the text [[EDIT: REDACTED NAMES OF SPAMMERS]], that I’ve been seeing intermittently for months now. The spacing strongly suggests that the text is in a DBCS font, but even so – can ANet really not filter messages or track IP to spot these promptly and keep them out? It’s really spoiling my game today.

Whinge off.

Edit: I normally have a fair amount of sympathy with developers and similar roles – I did that sort of job long enough myself to know that it’s not always easy or trivial. But this is annoying.

I completed the achievement on different characters, without moving the incomplete journals. Are they actually necessary to completion?

I doubt it. The collections are account-wide, and you get the completed versions from the reward chest anyway.

Doghouse.1562

Edit: The graphics aren’t so much muddled up as inconsistent. The incomplete journals have distinct graphics, but ALL of the completed journals share the graphic with the incomplete Justiciar’s Memoirs. Hardly exactly friendly.

Beware. For now you should probably complete all three journals before deleting anything related to them from inventory.

When you complete a full set of pages, the “incomplete” copy of the journal is NOT deleted from your inventory (according to the developer, because it was too hard to do otherwise). So you end up with both a complete and incomplete version.

That wouldn’t be a problem, if it weren’t for the fact that, right now, the complete and incomplete journals have their graphics muddled up (the completed Justiciar Bauer’s Memoirs has the graphic of the incomplete Apprentice Kasandra’s Diary, for example).

I came within a gnat’s whisker just now of deleting an almost-complete Diary (to free up inventory), under the mistaken belief that it was the superfluous incomplete copy of the Memoirs.

(I’d add supporting screen shots, but a PrintScreen apparently doesn’t capture the mouseover text.)

I got it early hours of the morning with only about 10 people playing, but that was before the new build.

Similarly. It seems to be a bit like Shatterer – too many players, and something gets in the way of the skill being deployed. I got it around 11pm the evening before last, in a fight with not all that many players, when he used the skill at least 3 times. In quite a lot of fights before that (all with many more players) it simply didn’t happen.

…Also they don’t want you to get a free port to a NPC merch to vendor your junk so this is why it don’t work inside Bloodstone Map.

Unlikely. Even ignoring Merchant Expresses, you can always jump to WvW or Heart of the Mists for no charge to access vendors and so on, then drop straight back out to where you were before.

But given that Pride of the Pact is the highest point in the zone, and you can get pretty much anywhere from there quickly by gliding, letting it be used inside the zone would be tantamount to a “no WP charges” pass. I suspect ANet just want you to keep leaking small amounts of cash, paying for your ports around the zone.

Lol. It got me wondering how a “bug” could be written.

Depending on ANet in-house terminology, Ester could simply mean that an entry has been made on the bug tracking system. Where I used to work, we’d have called that “raising a bug”, not “writing” one – but, different shops sometimes use different terms.

I really just want to finish the game.

[Frustrated Whinge]
Me too. but not like this.

Just as with the original PS, I’m peeved as heck about the final episode. I haven’t attempted it now for weeks, and very much doubt I will any time soon. I’ve resigned myself to not completing it until ANet does a “PS1 ending” on it and alters it into something not only different but solo-able.

With the original PS my objection was that, simply, after every episode being “my” story and something I could try solo, the final one quite arbitrarily needed me to hook up with a random group of other players to have any chance of succeeding. And I really don’t understand why, having changed the first PS ending to make it solo-able, ANet should then promptly inflict exactly the same flawed agenda on us in the new content. This time I not only feel pretty much the same, but am also totally fed up with the crappy fight mechanisms, the appalling “jail” mechanism on the last fight, and the numerous bugs I’ve either hit on the couple of occasions when I’ve managed to whip together enough friends to at least attempt it, or have read about here.

I love GW2, and that includes the PvE experience – but once again, what could have been a great finale to “my” journey has left me with a bad taste and feeling hard done by.

Yes, just saw this myself. It seems to be pretty much all over the zone at the top of the ramp up to the keep. Depending on which direction and angle I point my camera in, some or all of the graphics apart from the basic terrain disappear. Including, I should add, my character. I had one angle just now where the whole of the keep was missing except for a single tent floating in the air where the upper level ought to be. In another location I’d have called it a clipping problem.

Doghouse.1562

Hi,

For as long as I’ve had Guildwars 2 I’ve always had the Mute GW@ when in the background option unticked because I have 2 monitors and want to hear the game when im not in the game.

Since the update of today after a full game restart I have to untick the option everytime the games starts.
I tried a guildwars 2 repair, this did not fix it.

Yes, I came here to report the same thing, and for the same reason – if you’re running in any windowed mode – and especially on multiple monitors – you don’t want GW2 to go quiet just because you’ve changed the focus to look something up, or to type in TS chat, or whatever. (And if you also sometimes run parallel game copies, as I do when I’m running my dailies, there are times when you definitely don’t want the one that’s not in focus to automatically go quiet.)

Corrupted local data seems unlikely to be the cause; I see the bug on the two, independent copies of the game that I have on my machine (separate directories on separate physical drives). I can change the option once in game, and it is honoured – but whatever I choose to do, and however I close the client, next time I fire it up the mute option has been set again.

Unable to replay LS2 completed episodes

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Doghouse.1562

Doghouse.1562

One of my characters is currently unable to replay episodes of LS2 that she’s previously completed. Her Story Journal appear to have forgotten anything that she did prior to Episode 4.

I’m a bit of an altoholic, so I keep a fairly careful record of which characters have done what. One of my characters has completed LS2 up to and including Ep.4, “The Dragon’s Reach, Part 2”, and is currently at the last chapter (“Cornered”) of Ep.5, “Echoes of the Past”.

I’m currently trying to hoover up the remaining Mastery Points within the LS, to let me finish off my Tyria tracks. However, when I decided that this character was the one on which best to attempt one of the earlier chapter achievements, I noticed that the only previous episode that offers her the “Replay This Episode” option is “The Dragon’s Reach, Part 2”. The three episodes prior to that all give me a “Play this Episode” button, and if I swap to them, show no progress through the chapters. The Story journal also show the “episode not active” chest icon against the earlier episodes, rather than either of the two Achievement icons indicating completion (see attached screen shot).

Other characters who have made similar degrees of progress through the LS don’t have the same problem.

Out of curiosity, last night I played through the first few chapters of Ep.1 again. My Story Journal for the parts I’ve completed show correctly when I opt for that episode, and if I swap to another Episode, Ep.1 offers me “Continue” (as does the one I;m actually currently on, Ep.5). I’ve also been receiving completion awards at the end of each chapter.

Much as I’m happy to receive modest extra loot for playing catch-up – and may be able to fully-recover my progress by doing so – it’s not why I’m playing the character right now, and I’d rather not be doing it in the first place. Anyone have any idea what’s going on, and whether there’s any less painful thing I can do to sort it than just replaying everything?
Edit: Gave up and just played through them all again. Annoying, but at least my character’s back where she ought to be and I can get on with whatever it was I intended to do in the first place (that I’ve long-since forgotten…)

When will charrs get posture fix?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Doghouse.1562

Doghouse.1562

One of ANet’s biggest problems is that they can’t seem to wrap their minds around the concept of OPTIONS. Everything has to be an all-or-nothing CHANGE with them, and it has kittened me off many times since GW1. I think forcing a change in how peoples’ characters looked would anger a large portion of their fan base and result in more folks leaving the game.

Clearly it’s a trade-off. Options may equal a better player experience (and there are some I’d really like to see myself), but they often also equal more code. More code equals more bugs and a higher maintenance cost. And time spent on delivering and testing them is also a hit on other new stuff that might otherwise have been delivered with the same resource (such as LS). And on the whole, if it’s a question of some spiffy new interface function or a wadge of new content, I suspect most of us would pick content. But basically, it’s likely to be very much a question of, “If we’re opening up that part of the code anyway and it’s trivial to implement, maybe; otherwise, we can see the appeal, but it’s unlikely to happen.”
((Long-time programmer and tester here; I’ve seen how these things go from the inside.))

Spurious tracked debuff in SW/VW

Doghouse.1562

I’ve had this half a dozen times now. And I’ve been paying attention, so I’m confident it’s not me. Am I really the only person?

I’m running the 3 lanes in order, moving on when the vines go down, intending to engage the final boss. I’m mostly using ranged weapons and I almost never go anywhere near the vines themselves, preferring to fight from mid-lane. Maybe 1 time in 3, when the middle boss dies, I get the “Tracked” debuff, even though I’m invariably somewhere in the top lane at the time.

Hearts and Minds ; End Boss Fight *spoilers*

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Doghouse.1562

Doghouse.1562

Utterly agreed.

The final episode is lousy when it comes to handling player deaths. I play weekly with the same group of three other friends, and the simple fact is that we’re not likely to complete the HoT PS in its current form.

Before the boss, there are multiple places where you can fall or be knocked back to your death, ending up just watching the (boring) scenery around you while the rest of the party progress the story that YOU aren’t going to get to see – and the only way to get back into the fight seems to be for the party to wipe. Way too harsh in as extended and important an episode as the final one of the PS.

And the “prison” mechanism of the final fight – again, way too harsh considering how easy it is (especially on your first encounter with the boss) to get killed by not getting into the air in time. And don’t bother wiping to get imprisoned party members back, because you’ll simply go straight back to the start of the fight, and have to start again.

Of our four players, I’d say that two are never going to be the greatest MMO players in the world (and I’ve lost track of the number of times that one of them in particular has taken a wrong turn or died “embarrassingly”) – but then, they’re “causal” players, the weekly sessions are pretty much the only time they play GW2, and we have fun playing and progressing together. The other two of us are more regular players; we have our own strengths and weaknesses, like anyone, but we’re probably good enough to be classified at least as “average”. And we’ve progressed as a group through the HoT PS to the final episode, and enjoyed doing so. But it’s plain to me that we’re not, as a group, going to complete it in its current form, because the mechanism for getting into the air in the “electrification” stages is simply too hit and miss, and the penalty for failing is way too high and too unfair – and I know my friends well enough to also know that, as a group, we’re simply not going to keep grinding away at the episode in hopes that, eventually, we’ll actually fluke out and manage to keep one of us alive long enough to actually finish Mordremoth.

The simple fact is that I hoped ANet had learned from the first PS, but they haven’t. Just like the original PS final episode, the HoT final episode is mistuned. Yes, it’s the final episode of the PS, so it needs to feel “special”. But it seems ANet designers think that “special” and “hard” are synonyms, and nothing could be farther from the truth – this is not a fractal or a dungeon, only meant for people to run through repeatedly with a set of strangers until they know its detail inside-out – it’s the climax of our PS, and precisely because it’s the final episode of our journeys, we all deserve the reward of being actually able to complete it for ourselves – which includes solo if we choose – and, especially, without the indignity of having to feel that we were simply carried though on the backs of others, because we weren’t up to the challenge. Nothing wrong with having a “hard” mode with bigger rewards – but give us PS content that we can actually complete and enjoy, please. And remove the walls of that stupid prison.

Spurious tracked debuff in SW/VW

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Doghouse.1562

I had the “Tracked” debuff appear on me this morning following a defence in the bottom VW lane despite not tackling a single VW Champion. After the first lane was opened, I went round to defend the next two lanes as well. I realised I was debuffed when I attempted to go in for the top Champion. Went back to bottom (middle boss attempt had failed). Tried to go in, got (unsurprisingly) booted out again – and the debuff renewed with full time left to elapse. So in the end, all I could do was wait outside for the event to finish, then run in to loot..

Please allow us to disable gliding

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Doghouse.1562

I’m sure this has been brought up many times before, but it feels worth underlining after today’s daily of Chaos Crystal Cavern.

I’ve been really glad to see jumping puzzles added to the daily categories, but the glider being automatically deployed every time the spacebar is held a fraction too long is making it extremely difficult to make precision jumps.

It’s all well and good to disable it for puzzles in which it could be used to circumvent the path, but that does nothing for those that arbitrarily keep it on, or vistas that require the same level of coordination.

Just a simple toggle would work wonders.

I hit a similar problem in the open world a couple of days ago – was trying to make a specific sequence of jumps, and found it very hard to do so without the glider deploying and spoiling things. It would be very useful to be able to opt to disable it briefly (and to take any associated risks, clearly).

Why I believe gw2 fails miserably...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Doghouse.1562

I have the best armour and stats at the moment, and i’m happy with everything. But I just sat back in horror as I watched a level 15 icebrood elemental in a low-level region remove half my health in a few seconds.

If they ever decide to make a gw3 I hope they get rid of that stupid scaling system, because it really makes the game look like child’s play.

Even if my health suddenly drops from 20k to 1.5k, I would expect a low level enemy to struggle against a level 80. My suspicion is that levels are actually meaningless in this game.

I’ve posted on this topic before, and I’m posting again because this is something that is still bugging me.

ADDENDUM: some of these mobs are actually killing me quicker than level 80 mobs.

“I would expect…”

And there, in a nutshell, is the problem. You have expectations. They’re wrong. You’re playing with a fossilised mindset. GW2 is not WoW, nor is it some d20 AD&D clone. Frankly, you need to stop making assumptions and let the game show you what it has to offer. GW2 has found different solutions to a number of the common MMO challenges, and many of those differences are strengths, not flaws. So.

Levels. Irrelevant? Depends what you mean. In the way you obviously think of them, pretty much so; in practice, they have a definite purpose. GW2 character and zone levels guide a new character through the content; they also give players a feeling of character development along the way, if they want to experience that. What they emphatically don’t do is what you’re expecting – turn you into some kind of superhero just because you’re more experienced than the next guy. If that sort of extreme min-maxing is what you’re looking for, understand that it’s not what the game is about, emphatically not the only way of doing things (or even the most enjoyable, in the end) and I sincerely doubt there will be enough of it to cater to your needs. Either open your mind to other possibilities, or go play something more to your taste.

Scaling? In truth, level scaling is not only not “stupid” – in my book it’s very clever indeed. Firstly it means that the whole open world potentially remains as meaningful playable content even when your character has maxxed out – rather than, as most games have done, leaving you staring at vast expanses of de-clawed park land that you could safely wander through naked, and that frankly might as well not be there (and as an aside, need I point out that the real world is not quite like that?). And secondly it means that GW2 is a game in which characters of very different levels can play together in a meaningful way, instead of lower-level ones effectively being useless appendages. It’s not perfect – both heavily-scaled-down and heavily-scaled-up characters tend to be a little disproportionately strong – but that’s an issue with the tuning, not the concept. Once you realise why it’s there and get used to it, it’s one heck of a lot better than the older, frankly kiddy-game, wish-fulfilment alternatives.

This achievement guide has some of the questions and the wiki seems to have all the questions. However I think there are so many questions that it is hard to look at the list and get the answer in the required time. I just kept coming back and guessing until I got the 20. Eventually I actually knew some of the answers, lol.

Assuming you can type at at least moderate speed, search is your friend. (My browser is currently Firefox, but I assume that some variant of the following will work on other browsers).

Open the wiki page. Open the browser search. Now (and only now), interact with the hologram. The timer is now running. Pick a slightly unusual word from the question, go to the browser search field and type it in. 90% of the time, you’ll go straight to the entry for the correct question (if not, hit the “find next” button until you do). Go back to the game and answer it

You ought to be able to do that with 25% or so of the time remaining, even if you don’t hit the right question first time.

Missing fire graphics in VB event

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Doghouse.1562

Doghouse.1562

During the Pact Encampment event “Recover cannon components from the wreckage”, it has suddenly(?) become somewhat arbitrary as to whether individual, burning wreckage piles have fire graphics or not.

Meaning that it is very easy to run up to one of them and take damage, or even get killed, under the impression that it’s safe to loot them. I did it multiple times myself before I realised what was happening, and I’ve watched a lot of people do the same over the last few days.

Burning wreckage piles without fire graphics do still display the “interact” cog symbol (that means, in effect, “throw water here”), and lootable ones the hand icon, so once you’re aware what’s going on it’s not hard to interact correctly. But – judging by the number of people getting it wrong – it’s clearly confusing if you’ve never done the event before (and, presumably, harder to work out the event mechanics as well).

Update: I didn’t think to grab a screen capture the times I saw this, over the last couple of days; I’ve run the event again multiple times since raising this post in hopes of grabbing one, without seeing the problem recur, so – unless anyone know better – I guess it’s possible it was transient.

Truth to tell? Who knows. Does it even matter? I know, though, that I have two accounts, one with maxxed MF, one without, and I definitely feel that I get a better hit rate on rares and above on the first than the second. I’m sure it adds up over time. Plus, what the heck. It’s something else to pursue when you’re playing. If it gives pleasure – even just boasting rights – what more justification do you need?

Consume All - Essence of Luck

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Doghouse.1562

Doghouse.1562

Consume all for Essence of Luck not working.

I just lost a stack of 62 exotic Essence of luck from using consume all.

I know because, I just reached 170% right before I use the stack, there was no word showing that I gain X% magic find , and hero panel still showing 170%.

I report ingame with screenshot but i dont have screenshot of my essence of luck stack .. so.

You almost certainly didn’t lose it. 62 Exotic essence of luck is 12.4K luck; at 170% MF you need 14K-15K luck to gain a point. Most likely you only just had 170 MF, and you simply haven’t earned quite enough more luck for that extra +1% yet.

How to check:

  1. Open your Hero UI (“H”).
  2. Open the “Achievements” tab at left (6th icon down).
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the display.

At bottom right, you’ll see your current Magic Find, and a bar showing:

  • how many points of Luck you need for the next +1%
  • how many of those you’ve earned so far.

If you consumed a stack of 62 Exotic, and haven’t used more since, that should be close to full – but unless you have a lot of MF points from achievements, that stack isn’t enough, on its own, to get you a full +1% at 170 MF.

To see your MF from Achievements, mouse over the “Magic Find” number (“+170%”) just above the bar, and read the hover tip.

MF gain is on a (simplified) diminishing returns curve. The more you have, the more luck it takes to get you an extra +1%. “Simplified” because there’s a plateau once the cost per +1% hits 30K luck.

(Be grateful you can actually consume a stack of 62 essences with a single click now. It wasn’t always so, and – believe me – maxxing out MF by double clicking every essence, every point of the way was, literally, painful, even with Artificing to merge small essences into big ones!)

(Edit: As an aside – and without meaning it in any negative or derogatory way – I’m actually quite surprised that someone can manage to get all the way to 170% MF and not be aware of the above. Along the way, you’ve cashed in well over half a million luck points. But everyone plays in their own way, I guess, and I suppose if you always cash in large stacks of luck, you might take a while to notice how things work.)

Feb. 23rd Update, Problem found in Game Data

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Doghouse.1562

Doghouse.1562

It looks to me like either the client or data in the latest patch has a problem.

Following the patch this evening I got a message “GW2 saw a problem with your game-data” that it’s hard to see can have come from any source other than the patch itself.

To explain: I run two copies of GW on my computer. The copies are held in separate file structures on different physical drives; to the best of my ability to do so, the two are fully isolated from one another. (I start the second copy as a a scheduled task under a second user id, using a .bat file to launch it and to delete the “AN-Mutex-Window-Guild Wars 2” handle that normally gets in the way of running multiple copies.)

I was playing via my first, “main” copy when the latest patch struck, so after a few minutes of patch availability I logged out and let the first client patch itself. I then fired up the second copy, and allowed it to patch itself while I continued to play on the first, which it duly did. Both copies appeared to work fine following patching. A short while later I exited both clients under control and closed down the computer for a couple of hours.

On returning to the computer, both copies of the client gave me the “problem with your game-data” message on start-up.

Which seems very suspicious. Whilst I can easily envisage that one copy might have somehow become mildly corrupted, it’s hard to see how or why the problem would be at my end when it shows up, effectively simultaneously, on two separate copies. I would suggest that either the client is giving a false error report, or the patch itself is in some way “broken”.

Edit: Since “repairing”, neither has, to date at least, repeated the “error” message.

Pretty sure you have 60s before the inaction time out, which is very short after that (15s?).
I would prefer if it was 300s (until doors started) and 60s (after doors start)

It’s 20 seconds to the first inactivity warning.
And you get ejected (sarcasm alert) a full 10 seconds later.
The warning message repeats once a second.

So… 30 seconds of inactivity, and you’re gone.

(I didn’t intend it this way, but…
Just won a challenge, so checked the inactivity time out and message intervals multiple times. Then spent too long typing a first draft of this post whilst waiting – even though it’s on a second screen, and I was trying to check the chat log very regularly. Got kicked. Which meant I could count-back the warning messages to find the total time out as well. Fortunately the meta succeeded anyway.)

So. After an intense period running after the train powering up pylons, I took part in, and won, one of the challenges. OK – quiet moment. Time to get ready for the main event. Quick bio break. And I mean quick, because I’ve already seen that the inaction time out on armours is short.

I just hadn’t realised how short!

I – literally – ran. I can’t have been gone more than 90 seconds or so. But by the time I got back my chat log was full of “move or else” messages; my transformation was gone; and our attempt at the meta was out of pocket to the tune of one enchanted armour.

What can I say – an inaction time that low is ludicrous. If keeping armours active is sufficiently important to the meta that we don’t want people going afk from them, then at least give us a way of letting people leave the screen for a minute or so for good reason without everyone losing the armour as a result as well. Seriously – it’s not good as it stands.

This one is really quite weird.

Just now, after playing PvP quite happily at a decent frame rate, I swapped characters to one who was parked in Auric Basin. FPS dropped to about 20. Took that character into HotM – back up to 60 or so. Left HotM (returning to AB) – 20. WP to Malchor’s Leap – no change. Basically – anywhere in open world I was getting lousy FPS; in PvP I was fine. Killed the client, started again – fine everywhere. Whatever’s going on, it’s strange.

was wondering what to do because i came across a player with my real name didnt know if it was a coincidence or if my account is compromised ?

I’d agree that it’s unlikely unless you have a very unusual name, AND see other evidence. Plenty of players give characters their own names, and most names are less uncommon than you might think. The rest is odds, and even improbable coincidences happen all the time (we just don’t normally notice the millions that could have but didn’t).

I live and work in Britain, and I have a British name. But it isn’t a particularly common one. In evidence of that: I worked for a large multinational at one point, and when I once checked the company directory, of the 17-18k employees in the UK at the time, only 2 other people shared even my last name. And my name comes from the north, whereas I live in the south. Even so, when I went to see my doctor a few years ago, my notes still got mixed up with those of another patient I knew nothing about, registered with the exact same practice, who had the same first and last names.

Marking computer as trusted - how?

According to the “Security” tab under “My Account”:

You can choose to mark a computer as Trusted, in which case you won’t be prompted to enter a code when you sign in from that computer.

I’m probably blind as a bat, but I can’t for the life of me see where I go about doing that, nor find helpful instructions anywhere. Can anyone help dispel my confusion, please? I’m currently using SMS 2FA, but most of the time simply trusting my gaming rig would suit me far better.

Doghouse, I have exactly the same problem – and almost the same system: Win7Ultimate 64bit, 8GB RAM, nVidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti.
Normally I have 40-100 fps depending on the area I am, but since the Jan.12. patch, the game often starts in 20-25 fps mode – wherever I am/whatever I do. After several restarts of the game, it will be OK again.

Support says it’s a hardware problem – even though the problem appears only in GW2, only right after the Jan.12, patch. All other games are running with no problems.

Did you find any solution?

(OK – deleted reply made via second account. and reposted via Doghouse, for thread consistency)

Well – whilst it’s an easy answer (and one too easy for Support guys to use as an excuse), to be fair “hardware problems” can cover cases where ANet does something different but valid that the hardware doesn’t handle properly, of course. I’ve seen that on one or two other occasions, in other games, and it’s frustrating.

508000/508000 exp, 1 mastery point and cant learn gliding

Almost certainly NOT your problem – but as a friend of mine spent 30 minutes stuck at the point of having earned his first MP, on this, kick-yourself, version of “missing the flaming obvious” – and I actually spent a few minutes wondering what was going on myself the first time, before I sorted it by accident – I’ll mention it anyway, for whatever it’s worth…

When you earn your first MP, make sure that you’ve actually clicked the bouncing MP symbol at bottom right to accept it. Unlike HPs, but just like chests and so forth, until you do that, you haven’t actually got it – and in the Masteries tab on your Hero UI, your total MPs will (correctly but confusingly) read 0.

So far today I have been on the winning side in 3 dragon ball games but it has only registered 1

Indeed. I tried it yesterday for the daily. Won the first game; got no credit, moved on to do stuff that seemed to be working. Same story today. I don’t honestly think I’ll bother any more; it’s too much effort to play games for the outside chance that I’ll actually get recognised for my efforts.

Yes, noticed it during the dragon event in Frostgorge yesterday. Really crappy fps followed by smooth fps moments later.

Could be the same cause, I guess, but I’ve met that sort of thing before in other games – fps dropping way down without necessarily any obvious reason, then coming back again later. This feels different. My fps was lousy from the first moment my character got into game, and stayed that way for the whole time I was in it, including after dropping out to character select and back in. I guess in principle that it might have cleared, if I’d left it for a while – the longest I let it run was probably no more than 5 minutes – but that’s a test for the future; on previous occasions I’ve simply been trying anything that occurred to me to try to get a decent play experience back.

Anyone else seeing anything like this?

Following the latest patch (Jan 12th) and what looked to be a subsequent mini-patch on the morning of the 13th, I’m getting weird fps behaviour. Normally, I fire up the client and get a decent, smooth-playing 60+ fps (which I’m seeing right now, whilst logging at the Statue of Melandru near Pagga’s Waypoint in Malchor’s Leap). But just now – until I killed the client and restarted it – I was seeing an utterly painful, unplayable 15 fps. And I’ve seen the same on 3 occasions now (twice a client restart resolved it, once it didn’t).

I’m running an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti on Win7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1 with 8Gb RAM.

Option Reset Bug

Doghouse.1562

could you please stop spamming us with broken updates and do some actual work, like test them on a test server? that kitten camera shake option keeps enabling itself and the jumping puzzels and other evens are annoying on their own already.

It’s not possible to release an update for software of this size without bugs. When I say not possible I mean literally not possible; I don’t mean just hard.

Your frustration is totally understandable, but also based on a misunderstanding of the reality of software development.

If you disagree with me, you don’t understand the field and you’re wrong. Go and ask an engineer if it’s possible to make an invincible bridge. Now disagree with him. You’re still wrong.

Yup. Ex-professional IBM software tester here. Three absolutely immutable laws of software development are (1) there will ALWAYS be bugs**, (2) there’s never enough resource to find them all, and (3) some of the ones that slip through will be downright embarrassing. Anyone who for one moment thinks otherwise has never been anywhere near serious software development.

**The simplest commercial program I know of is an IBM assembly code null routine called IEFBR14. “BR14” stands for “branch on register 14”, which is simply a return – functionally the program effectively does nothing but exist. It ought to be a trivial piece of code, but it’s remarkable how hard it is to do even that – there are a number of errors that can be made, because there are actually other things, in context, that it needs to do in order to work “correctly”. Feel free to google it.

Two PCs, both Win7 fully patched, both 64-bit client, both used the same with respect to ‘Exit to Desktop’, etc .. one has the problem the other doesn’t!

Only obvious difference is they they each log in a different account.

I can go one better… I have two copies of the game on the same box on different drives (two accounts) – could easily be mere luck, but I’ve seen this on the one I use most (SSD, same partition as the OS) but not on the other (separate, HDD)!

Settings won't stay saved?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Doghouse.1562

Hello. Ever since the patch release today with all of the wonderful and lovely Winter’s Day Events, items and more. My account settings are not saving, and all of them keep reverting to how the game settings are when you first start playing the game.

I don’t know if this has been reported yet but I do hope it’ll be fixed soon. I am getting a little tired of having to fix my camera settings, adjust my options and so much more.

I have two copies of the game installed on my machine; the main copy has been having this problem; the second hasn’t. And it only seems to be the “General” options in my case. Weird.

I get the impression, though I can’t swear to it, that it’s ignoring recent changes on whichever options panel I happen to be on when I close the dialogue (which might make sense if it’s saving changes when the panel is changed, but doesn’t explain why it regressed in the first place). Having made my changes, changed panels and logged out, the client SEEMS to be remembering them for now. Whether that stays so, time will tell, but I’m doubtful; they’ve twice regressed today. And it’s definitely annoying to have to keep remembering and checking!

Edit: Hah… missed the post immediately before mine, with the link to the Dev’s response.

Assist the Ash Legion Heart

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Doghouse.1562

I recently did world completion on 3 characters. I never had an issue. One time the assault event was just starting. The other two I got it completed by doing the defend event which starts every 8-9 min. I can’t remember exactly but it’s around that interval. I completed it in 1-2 defense events.

If you’ve never suffered on this heart, you’re lucky. The heart design is unequivocally broken, and I make no apology for bumping this thread yet again.

I’ve fully completed Diessa Plateau on 12 characters, and partially on more, so I can say with certainty that I’ve done the heart a minimum of a dozen times. And, yes, it can go fine. BUT. Many times it doesn’t (especially of late, in my own perception at least). The problem is that there are days, and times of day (the weekend seems particularly bad), when Incendio Templum is simply continuously under Night warband control, and enough players are hovering around (hoping to complete the heart, presumably) that the defence events are very short and hard to benefit greatly from (and it certainly doesn’t help that one of them is merely to take down a couple of effigies). At such times it can still take half an hour or longer to complete the heart, during which time you’re frankly doing little more than waiting and hoovering up the occasional pop-up. It’s soul-destroying, and not remotely the best way to reward players for spending their time in game.

"Strange Observations" Story bugs? (spoiler)

Doghouse.1562

Same thing. But i stuck on “share the news…” stage, they just don’t want to talk to me.

Just had the same problem. I’m not sure if it’s relevant, but I initially missed the side tunnel to where everyone is waiting, and went back down to the lower level, where I started. I got close to the team, though, with Taimi in tow. When I finally worked out where they were, Taimi was already with them. Whatever – once I finally got to them, absolutely nothing happened.

Second pass through, I note that Taimi followed me to the team, and the ending triggered when she arrived.

(Other possibilities I can think of that might have conceivably been involved, first time through:
- I got past both sets of traps without triggering a fight; second time, I triggered both sets
- I died once when confronting the controllers; second time, not
But I’m betting on my having gotten too close to the team whilst not actually being in the right place.)

Yeah, I found that misleading as well.

Nothing more complicated than that you haven’t realised that you’re done with the instance for now. If you’re like me, you’re staring at the green star, which is well within the instance zone, and feeling convinced that you need to get to it (and indeed, when in doubt that’s what I normally do, and check that it really says “Exit to Tyria” before I leave). But on this occasion there’s genuinely no path to it – and if you check at bottom-right you’ve got the familiar “Leave instance” icon. Time to go back to the larger world and run, therefore.

(Sorry – this was a bump of an old post – but having become stuck at the same point myself, it seemed worthwhile answering it.)

Unplayable Solo

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Doghouse.1562

Doghouse.1562

where are you at? I’m decently far and so far have solo’ed every story and exploring maps. A couple of skill points have champ bosses but even solo the game allows and usually has players around also doing it. While not as easy as the core game its not impossible either. Just requires some skill.

There may have been players around during the first few days; I’m not finding that to be the case now (6 days afterwards), and getting the Hero points has been close to impossible. For better or worse, that has to change so that average players can still get through the content 12 months from now, if they so wish.

ps2: if still having trouble I would recommend minion type classes. With the 90ish% damage reduction to minions by aoe (unless targeted) they are very strong right now and would help “solo” as they take the pressure off of you.

Good advice in the short term, perhaps, but actually a pointer to the fact that the balance is wrong. It mustn’t be necessary to run a particular profession in order to get through what is supposed to be new, main, PvE content (“We’re so sorry that your thief can’t do the expansion content. ‘You chose… …poorly.’ Why don’t you go roll a whole new character and try again?”). Again – if the average player, with an average character of any profession, can’t get through the content on their own – it needs to change. (It doesn’t need to be easy to do – just not so hard that it becomes undo-able and makes people give up in frustration. They’ve paid for it; they have a right and expectation of being able to get value from it. And if that value isn’t delivered, they are likely to walk away entirely – which is the last thing that ANet, and the GW2 community by extension, actually needs.)

ArenaNet please stop nerfing content.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Doghouse.1562

It takes someone 5mins to make a post about how ‘hard’ something is when it may be forever to actually get good at it.

And it takes seconds to make a post devoid of constructive comment such as that.

Frankly, I really don’t care what the “L2P!” crowd think. This is about play balance – in this case, making enough of the new content accessible to all players to feel that it justifies their purchases. Not just making a few hardcore elite players feel smug with themselves.

Don’t get me wrong; it’s great that there should be content that challenges even better players equipped with top-notch gear. But this is an expansion that people are being asked to pay out for, and that (presumably) ANet hope will secure theiir revenue for a while. Many players are rather more casual, don’t spend long hours in the game, and have neither the time nor inclination to invest such hours as they have in banging their heads repeatedly against brick walls. And it’s certainly not remotely in ANet’s financial interest to put a significant portion of its customers off within hours of getting into the expansion, by putting excessively difficult stuff straight across their main path of progress – they’ve paid good money for the new content, and if they get too frustrated, there’s a very good chance that they’ll simply chuck the game in altogether, and go find something else to do.

The simple fact is that the initial tuning of HoT was wrong – great if you were looking for new high end challenges, but lousy if you weren’t. If you went through the new zones on launch day, fine – you could have freeloaded on the backs of all the other players. Anything you possibly wanted to do was being done by dozens of other people at the same time. Very different now, after even a few days – peak times may, conceivably, be different, but most of the time, in the first new zone, if there’re more than a couple of people around even for an event, you’re lucky. And you might as well forget most of the Hero Challenges (at their original difficulties, at least – if they’ve been nerfed, i haven’t tried them yet) unless you’re prepared to wait around shouting out in chat for someone else who happens to want to do the same thing – because they’re hard verging on the undoable if you hope to solo them and haven’t got absolutely top-rate gear and a good spec. The conclusion is inescapable; whether everyone approves or not, main path, key content in HoT was simply too difficult, and needed to be retuned.

Edit: Actually, I’m going to go further, and say that the top-end players are the last ones that Anet needs to keep happy – because they’re the most likely to be earning enough in-game gold to be able to stay well away from shelling out actual cash for game things they want. It’s mostly the more casual ones who want more but don’t have the time/inclination to grind who actually keep the revenue stream active and the game going.

Doghouse.1562

yeh always crash when i try to get to the last step of the “prologue” instance

where it seems like a cutscene starts … but just complete freeze and have to use taskmanager to end gw2

i didnt patch 100% before trying this though
tried 1x at 30% when i was just able to get into the game
tried 1x at ~65%
will now wait for 100% and then try again and tell here if it worked then

Yes, I’d suggest just letting it finish downloading. Second time this happened to me, I just left the game to do whatever it needed. After a while, it unfroze, and the cutscene played (followed by story completion). I then tried to progress into “Torn From the Sky”, and got a cleaner “area not loaded yet” message.

I can’t say that this is the only explanation, but it seems fairly obvious that the game has no check on whether the cutscene has been loaded before it lets you into the instance, nor any clean way of telling you that it’s still downloading, if you happen to need it before it’s finished – and that that is what at least some of the freezes people are having are caused by.
