Based on history we will be heavily nerfed then thrown a bone that no one wants. O.o just read about empathetic bond nerf, yay.
As the ranger community continues to get nerfed into oblivion I had a thought. What if a ranger could use a staff? Designed around support.
We could actually support teammates w/o running spirits which water the class down to well, elementary status… and maybe just maybe, not have to trait/ waste a slot for movement speed which leads to this thought:
Tangent: Why in perfect kittening hell are rangers one of the least mobile classes in the game. I’m not talking about swoop/ leaps, we have very limited access to swiftness coupled with our dmg being hampered by pets makes for a pickle.
More often than not a utility/ trait/ rune set is wasted just so we (rangers mind you) can keep up with the rest of the meta.
Sorry for the bi-polar post… staff would be cool, people would actually want us around/ why are we so slow?
It looks as if it’s been covered but what thell.
You want to run full dire/ apoth (depending on how survivable you want to be). Nades are great for power or condi’s which is why you might be confused. Power will be more glass cannon which is why from the sounds of it you will want to run condi.
Furthermore, pistol shots are much easier to land than rifle… and the option of putting on a shield is great. Condi nades can do massive dmg as can power nades. Just a play style choice.
As far as might stacking goes it is very beneficial for condi or power…. which has great synergy with nades. If you grind out runes of the noble and go p/p full dire you can melt people as your condi dmg/ upkeep will be constant and the raw dmg of your abilities will be respectable rocking a steady 15-20 stacks of might through noble runes/ enhance performance/ sigil of battle.
These stacks will also push your condi dmg through the kittening roof… although now it would certainly be wiser to take powder over performance. You will still have a nice amount of might stacks.
With all this being said… I run zerker bombs and haven’t looked back
kittening make it happen already.
Capture the flag is much more dynamic than standing on a circle.
In every other mmo I have played I have always tried to win the objective. It was MONTHS ago when I got fed up and just decided to start farming because it was more gratifying.
PvP is quite stale in this game and it’s getting worse as the skill gap continues to narrow.
It’s ironic that this game was marketed as a skill based game… and as time has gone on it has rapidly crept away from this approach. The skill gap is so TINY compared to when this game first came out, and it keeps getting worse.
I normally dislike qq threads as well but this is really out of left field.
lol, sounds like me and my ascended rifle… sure did take my time grinding that out.
Well I wanna run zerker flame-thrower so am biased. I feel like A-net does not like the idea of us having stability as we have so much CC. I think the only things wrong with flame-thrower is the dmg (it’s abhorrent actually) and lack of a blast finisher.
Bombs and ’nades do excellent dmg, elixir gun and toolkit have amazing utility.
Flame-thrower is the kitten child in the middle with nowhere to go. ft 3 & 5 are the only things that are heavily used in my exp (power or condi).
Well… I’m lazy.
I think you missed the point of the thread. Why/ where the hell did this come from? You are correct, it does nothing to change play style at all. Ironic the dec. 10th patch was aimed at creating build diversity… and here we are literally being told to not even look at turrets.
battle + bloodlust means an easy 4 – 4.3k attack power on my wvw build hello 10k BoB’s.
Turrets are so broken that if we continue to nerf them they will circle around to op… Bold strategy.
I feel like the utility is fine with FT, the damage is what needs a boost. 1,2, and 4 could all do a lot more dmg. Especially 2. Zerker flame-thrower could be so much fun.
This sounds very similar to what I run… my setup: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQFAUlIq6ZH5SfF17IyoHdmotZiKoffeIXPYbB-jUyAYfASEQyDI7xoxWBLiGreBT5iqdDi+NyyAwsAA-w
Hits very hard, tons of cc and has some nice defensive abilities… Basic premise is to drop big ol’ bomb, magnet pull you, prybar, bob goes off continuing cc chain, auto attack as they get up overcharge shot knocking them down again. Very long cc chains are possible, especially if he has thumper. I imagine with some tweaking we could guess his build.
For traits, are you positive on the 2nd turret besides healing turret? Might have been dropping supply crate. If the blast finishers were knocking you down then it’s easy to guess the explosions line. Safe to assume speedy kits was in play.
For gear Did conditions seem to drop quickly? How much might did he usually have going for him? Was he squishy when you actually landed a good hit? etc.
Let’s start with this http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQFAUlIq6ZH5SZF17IyoHdmoNhiKoffeIX0VbB-jkxAYfAyCQyrIasF3ioxqrxUuER1yAwsAA-w
and see where we can get?
Power bombs are a ton of fun btw
Only complaint is the casting time on box of nails… stupid ridiculous. Other than that it is an amazing kit.
………………………………………………………………………….. I love killing people with my wrench.
This is my wvw set up… I have been an kitten and posting this build in many threads. I don’t know of many people running a power bomb set up but it’s a lot of fun (trying to spread the word). Rifle hits very hard with this build. The idea is to drop BoB, magnet pull them, prybar, BOOM, rifle 4, throw wrench, etc. Most fun I’ve had in the game. For spvp i run eagle runes and full zerker.
I just want the cast time reduced, stupid ridiculous.
If you are totally against rifle you could…go with p/p and a flamethrower over net turret and take burn duration you could do some nasty damage, (rocket kick, incendiary ammo, blowtorch, fire field etc.) You could rock sigil of smoldering… all the while still maintaining a lot of cc and still do decent physical damage… maybe try forge runes? Obviously trade out sitting duck for something… blah blah blah.

I have way to much fun with this… hit glass cannons for 10kish with BoB.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQFAUlIq6ZH5SfF17IyoHdmotZiKoffeIXt1DC-TkAg0CtICSFkLITQygsBNEB
I use a mix of soldiers/ zerker. Have 3500 base attack, 1250 toughness. Run lemongrass poultry (-40% condi duration with hoelbrek runes), maitenence oil. HIts real hard and great kiting abilities.
You can always switch up the traits for nades if that’s your jam.
Bombs away friends
I humbly disagree. I have always seen Rifle traits are in that line for crit, not condi dmg. I think changing the bleed to have better synergy with the rest of the abilities (power) is a good idea.
On a side-note, even with the recent buff, I find that the difficulty of landing blunderbluss laughable. Especially when the idea behind the skill should make it, one of the easiest to land skills in the game.
Bombs, tk, ft all have great in your face combat skills. The rifle is also quite efficient in close quarters… and elixer X juggernaut is 30 secs of fighting with your bare hands. Do you actually think we cannot spec for melee or just really really want a mace/ hammer for engi? ;p
Well with the incoming nerfs to incendiary powder, invigorating speed, and to a lesser extent transmute (some see it as a buff, I don’t), I have been toying around with different builds.
I am absolutely in love with the rifle and have always liked the idea of a “mad bomber” build but have had difficulty pulling it off.
This guy here:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQFAUlIq6ZH5y5F17IyoHdmotZiKoffeIXPYaB-TkAg0CnICSFkLITQygsBNEB
Has been an absolute joy to play. Basic idea for a burst combo is drop BoB, magnet pull, prybar, bob explodes, overcharged shot, throw wrench, net shot, jump shot, blunderbluss. If you can land all of these successfully your target should be dead or to far in the hole to recover.
Hoelbrek runes give you a base attack of 3509!! On top of this when in combat you will be consistently rocking 8-12 stacks of might. And on top of all that you get a -20% condition duration. You can hit glass cannons for just under 8k with BoB. Prybars will hit for 4-5k. And hip shot is great at generating pressure from range… everything hits hard actually
I do not take points with this build. I stay on the fringe of fights and magnet pull for burst combo’s when I see someone is getting low. (although speedy shoes/ slick shoes dropping bombs dance is very fun in a large group)
You can get out of a lot of sticky situations as well with slick shoes, glue bomb, block on a 16 sec cooldown, etc.
This build has been a slow evolution but am very much enjoying the results. (although you feel horribly stupid when you drop a BoB and magnet pull misses).
I was wondering if any of you guys would make changes to this build? I have thought about taking explosive powder instead of short fuse but I like smoke/ glue bomb at the ready. I have also been toying around with armor mods over adrenal implant.
Oh and yes, I have ran this with nades, it’s just as; if not more so, effective than bombs. I just wanted to make a zerker bomb build.

I don’t buy that at all… we all know most of the ins and outs of other classes by this point. I especially don’t buy it because build diversity among engi’s is far and away above other classes. Do we even have a cookie cutter spec?
I find wars, guards, thieves, eh… spirit rangers lol; far more predictable than another engi’s… just more difficult to down.
Does anyone else notice this? I seem to get focused by other engi’s all the time in spvp. I have noticed it with other engi’s (including myself). Kinda ironic that we are one of the closer knit communities on these forums.
I imagine (what I am telling myself) that with the current meta engi’s are the easiest class to focus. Rangers have endless evades, guards don’t die easily, wars definitely don’t die easily, necs can soak dmg for days, mesmers and thieves have constant teleports/ invis.
That leaves ele’s and engie’s as the “best” targets. Out of the two i’d say engie’s are the better option.
Am I crazy or do we all deliberately target each other? ;p
Was bored and came up with this.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQFAUlIqya3zy5F1LJxIFde0gKYXRKyv+/oQupF-TkAg0CnIMSZkzIjRSjsGNAB
Fun berserker bomb build I came up with. Not a serious build mind you, quite silly in fact.
You hit really hard and are fairly slippery if played right. My basic approach is to let the hip shot’s flow on the fringe of a melee. I do this until a kill opportunity comes up. I then go into “madbomber” mode and jumpshot onto the target, BoB, net shot, blunderbluss, airblast, overpowered shot, bombs away. You can string together 3 knockdowns very consistently if BoB lands. Follow with airblast then overpowered shot. Can keep someone on the ground for a long time.
Defensively you have a lot of blinds, snares, knockdowns (love spinning, airblast and spinning back again as i turn a corner)
Basic approach anyways. Another madbomber thing to do is Jump shot into a melee, BoB, slick shoes, bombs, napalm, etc. can create a lot of chaos in a short amount of time and is a hell of a lot of fun. Backed by melandru runes, projection injection, leg mods, and super speed (+ inertial converter), make for getting the hell out of dodge quite attainable despite being fairly glassy.
Sitting duck works really well with net shot and glue bomb. Add in hydromancy sigil and landing your bombs is a bit easier.
I have also ran this with soldiers and valk ammies. I prefer zerker though because it’s more in line with the builds “personality.” If you want you can go (25/15/0/20/10) (30/15/0/10/15) (20/10/0/30/10) etc. etc. you get the point. I settled on this because I thought it had the best balance but can obviously be tinkered to how “mad” you wanna get.
Again, not a “competitive” build but a lot of fun. You can rack up some kills and kite like a boss. Bombs away friends

We don’t want classes to have perma-vigor where dodging is inherent with skill/ reaction. With this being said we looooove classes who can perma stability, perma-evade, and have insaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaane passive healing and/ or other abilities that make life for the player that desires a much more “skill oriented” approach.
Oh my… I’ve confused myself again with the philosophy (lack there of?) of this game.
Been having a lot of fun with this in spvp. In wvw; however, I have recently joined a roaming guild and am finishing up my gear set. I run a might stacking p/p build but am considering going over to the power side. I find the rifle a bit more dynamic.
My main concern however is retaliation. The guild i’m in swipes the tails of zergs/ helps out in big sieges. So retaliation is a concern. Is this a problem when you’re roided out of your mind and making it rain on fools?
I have played traps ranger for a long time before switching back to engi. My engi crushes traps on condi dmg/ upkeep. I can top out at 1650 condi dmg with corruption stacks. No, I don’t might build, I also have great survivability via blocks, boots, snares, knockbacks, insta blind, perma-vigor, etc and still have almost as much toughness.
Only class I struggle with is a very well played skullcrack/ 100b war or a boon-hate necro (which aren’t really currently around)
That being said playing other classes is very easy… but the ceiling for success is much lower.
Engi’s for life… or until a better game comes out
Where to begin… at a glance it looks like nothing more than an escape mechanism. It’s potential; however, is much greater than that. A base cd of 20 secs gives us a lot of room to be creative in how we dictate a fight.
Gap opener/ Closers
-getting away, staying on top of (duh)
-mitigating AI damage: necro minions, ranger beasts, mesmer illusions. Drag their pets away from the villain then rocket boots away from the pets while maintaining range (dmg) on the villain. Pets for whatever reason are generally ignored in this game. They do A LOT of dmg, eliminating this greatly benefits you.
-immediate LoS (when available): In a really, really close fight but your heal down? Rocket Boots out of the villain’s LoS. Whatever is around, be it a giant rock, wall corner, up a flight a stairs. Being able to buy time in a close fight is invaluable. Boots really help you get that time.
-Ward jumping: You can get past wards with these babies. Necro’s wall of terror, guardian line of warding, etc. (Brain just panicked ankitten ot 100% sure on this one but fairly certain you can)
-Rooftop jumping: A large hole in the ground is rocket boot’s best friend. You can leap over these gaps while the villain will have to walk around. This allows you to kite more efficiently. Or conversely, cut the villain off he is trying to kite you.
The list goes on and on depending on your situation. Rocket kick is also a very reliable source of damage once you get the range down.
Blast finisher, I won’t go to in depth on these as you can look them up with the respective field but keep in mind the effect happens when you LAND and it’s aoe. You can leap to an ally and help them out by a small splash heal (water field) stealth (smoke field) etc.
I can’t play w/o rocket boots, let alone another class. Cheers.

Ahaha, just logged in and made a thread saying same thing… didn’t look first
But I think with multiple maps of capture the flag. As we have with conquest, with all sorts of terrain would bring a great dynamic to pvp.
(edited by Dolt.2731)
Would be awesome!
Especially with tournaments.
Game-play is very fast. Combat will slow down though as you gain more experience. Also if you are running a glassy set up/ low defensive tools etc; you might want to think about running with a bit more attrition. As you are new to the game. Even the most experienced can be bursted down quickly.
Try this on for size. Really fun build with combo rotation’s etc.
Ummm Shield 5 got buffed… full 2 second block and can still throw for the daze; meaning i can stun multiple people and not just 1 and still throw my shield at the end of it’s duration!! How is this a nerf??
Yeah necs and wars got buffed, they needed it. Will not be replaced be necs, we bring to much utility to the table, no one can burn like we do and We have soooooooooooooo much cc. Not to mention amazing group support with healing turret, eg, etc.
Stun breakers we have are amazing btw (outside of elixir s oddly) and with the rocket boots change we are more mobile than anyone now. Honestly; what they took from us is not that big of a deal… what they gave us is a huge kitten deal. Adapt and prosper.

Even before patch Top rated engi’s had started to move away from hgh builds. you can see the builds here http://forums.intothemists.com/index.php?/topic/46-top-gw2-tournament-builds/
After the patch with so many buffs and only one major nerf (elixir r) a ridiculous amount of builds are now viable. We now have a stun break on elixir, kit, gadget, and turret… any play style is somewhat viable atm, just have to figure out the nitty gritty and what you want to accomplish.
Great time to be an engi imo.
Started this before the patch… since then i, dropped 10 in alchemy (backpack regenerator) for 20 in tools picking up speedy gadgets. Swapped FT for elixir gun and elixir r for rocket boots….
The dynamics of this build are hard to put into words other than you have an answer (if cd’s are up) for any situation. You are an excellent group fighter/ roamer. Insane mobility. Great defense and asinine condi upkeep. with that being said…
As of the new patch I’m trying out builds every hour. Gadgets are kitten addicting, it seems any style of play we can think of is possible atm… great time to be an engi.
(edited by Dolt.2731)
So much fun… Ele’s are gonna be qqing so hard at this lol. great synergy with slick shoes as well.
rocket boots are way to much fun. Slick shoes are awesome. Been running around with land mine and battering ram here and there as well. Glad to see the Eg stun breaker as well. Great patch i think.
As time goes on you will be able (hopefully) to identify what skill they use to stealth. From this you’ll get a feel for how long they have to act before stealth wears off. This gives you tremendous anticipation on when to block/ dodge etc… as a smart thief (in most circumstances) will wait as long as they can for initiative to recover before jumping back in.
Also hopping into spvp matches could help. Not only can you grind out dailies but there is an asinine amount of thieves to fight against.
(edited by Dolt.2731)
If these are true… can’t wait to mess around with gadgets
And walking into a thief’s shadow refuge and hitting shield 4 to knock them out of it is… so, so, so kitten awesome! Not to mention this with rezzes, stomps, etc.
On top of everyone else’s comments, if you build correctly you can get everything oh pistol has to offer and more. Engi’s have many ways of applying burning outside of pistol 4. if’n you run bombs, toolkit, or nades you have access to an aoe slow… and so on.
Using the new build that high lvl tourney engi’s are using… http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-VRw;0B-cP-i0c-sTFx0;9;4T9-J94275;308-5;0Tw;4hoHAhoHA2VN
I use FT for many many things, the utility it brings is outstanding.
The idea (i think) is to keep reapplying condi’s, all of which (outside of fear) are available to you at a very rapid rate. I have the basics down just wondering if anyone had any in depth tips on when/ where to use the multitude of blast finishers available etc…
I prefer not to play hgh builds as the dynamics of the build are a bit more one-dimensional than this one.
Started playing a 30/10/0/20/10 condi build and must say it’s quite fun even though the learning curve feels steep with so many options at your disposal. I got a message from an ele today while doing dailies. “I <3 engi’s who can’t play anything but bunker condi, u r pathetic.”
Felt pretty good. As far as I know this a newer build and not “bunker” as it has 0 healing nor stability. But I know I have a long way to go… I am fairly consistent with my condition upkeep and cc but want to get into the nitty gritty of the spec so…
Had a couple questions for those more experienced. How often do you use mine kit? I know it’s very situational but I find myself in ft kit or p/s most often. And on that note do you prefer ft auto attack for burning or pistol for bleed stacks?
Do you generally open with incendiary ammo for a lot of up front pressure? As it has such a long up-time I hit this pretty much whenever it’s up to kick-start the cd… is this wrong? Any other tips would be great, thanks.
Oh i run full nightmare rune’s, rabid ammy/ jewel, sigil doom/ smoldering if that helps.
(edited by Dolt.2731)
30 (I, V, VIII)/ 10 (VI)/ 0/ 20 (I, IX)/ 10 (VI)
Healing Turret, flamethrower, bomb kit, elixer R, supply crate
pistol (doom) shield (smoldering)
nightmare runes/ rabid ammy/ jewel
Is a build Teldo just came up with and is sooooooooooooooooo much fun.
