There probably isn’t a ceiling to the algorithm. Its real ceiling is what people would be willing to pay vs what people are willing to sell for.

the 5000 gems sitting in an inactive account isn’t part of the exchange and has no effect on the exchange. Only the act of buying or selling on the exchange causes the price to fluctuate. If there is more buying than selling the price will go up, if more selling than buying, price goes down.

As far as I understand there isn’t a limited number of gems in the game, only a finite number in the exchange supply pool. Meaning if someone dumped 1 million dollars into the game they would get 1 million dollars worth of gems created (and if they tried to convert that all to gold all at once via the exchange, crash the exchange rate and make gems really cheap again).

Think of it this way: Anet wants to sell you gems, so they really cant ‘run out of stock’ on gems otherwise their system shuts down and they don’t get money. But also for every item in the gem store they sell they want an equivalent amount of money for that item.

So instead of selling a character slot for 10$ directly they give you 800 gems for 10$ and you can either buy the character slot (which destroys the 800 gems) or sell the gems on the exchange and someone else can use those 800 gems to buy a character slot. From anets perspective that 800 gem was bought and used to buy a character slot, the exchange was just an intermediate step before the final transaction. The exchange didn’t create those gems, the 10$ purchase did, and it didn’t destroy those gems, the character slot purchase did.

Also considering the ‘inactive’ account isn’t disabled the real player could come back at any moment and use those gems.

The exchange rate is regulated by an algorithm (MATHS) that adjusts the prices based on supply stockpiles.

Basically, the more we buy and the less we sell the more costly it will be to buy, and the more profitable to sell. by that way the price will keep close to the price we players are willing to pay for gems.

There were a few things said in the state of the game specifically about WvW that I want to highlight here.

1) Elementalists, guardians, and thieves will no longer be able to destroy trebuchet projectiles
2) WvW/PvE split for Confusion condition and Retaliation Boon, confusion and retaliation will do less damage
3) Thieves stealth change is being reverted in WvW and PvE, but not sPvP (back to 3 seconds revealed debuff from 4).

There are some general balance changes to the classes, including the introduction of boon hate to warriors and the ability to steal boons using a thief sword skill but I wanted to point to the things that were said specifically relating to WvW.

I take it John that this is an exceedingly general topic and we can use examples from a variety of games in this thread without issue?

For example game economies in various games are largely different.

Guild wars 2 economy is global the price of a good on one server or shard (whatever you want to call it) is the same across all servers. Also in game there is no such thing as a Divinities Reach market and a Lions Arch market. In guild wars 1 there were several local markets and price offerings can differ just between those markets and time of day.

One big example of this is Eve Online – where not only do you have a ‘free’ market in empire space but local markets in each region and even controlled markets in nullspace all marching along in some level of harmony. In that game you can actually make new markets and make money logistically.

Curiously, if gems are destroyed (which i still doubt happens), what happens when a person buys gems with gold and spends those gems in the store, removing the supply from the exchange?

There’s actually a few questions specific to debating over regulation.

Those gems are destroyed upon buying a good from a gem store. But that is completely irrelevant in relation to the exchange. The exchange itself does not create or destroy gems. What players do with the gems after they buy them is up to the player and has no effect on the exchange itself.

The currency exchange neither creates or destroys gems and has a finite supply.

If gems had a fixed price then either
1) the currency exchange will need to create gems
or
2) deny any gem purchase when supply runs out.

Gems are created when someone buys them with $, and gems are destroyed when someone uses them to buy an item off the gem store (including bank and bag slots) or transfer servers. I saw mention of this a few months back it will take me a while to find the original quote.

Here is 1 of 2 quotes:

There seems to be some confusion:
The currency exchange has a supply of Gems and Gold.

If players are converting Gold to Gems, then the Amount of Gold player will receive for their gems goes up.
If players are converting Gems to Gold, then the amount of Gems players receive for Gold goes up.

The exchange rate changes based on the scarcity of each supply. You cannot inflate it, it’s an exchange rate. As players purchase in one direction, it entices purchases in the other direction.

I think the discussion on further regulating gem prices is a bit silly. I am in the camp that the current system is fine.

Anet has said the following:
1) gems transacted through the gold→gem exchange are not created
2) the only way gems are created is when real world money is spent to create them

so, how does one ‘regulate’ this system while guaranteeing that the supply of gems doesn’t run out? (in my estimation it is already regulated, though the algorithm arena.net set)

If you put a price cap on the gem price a couple of things may happen:
1) people may seek to buy gold from illegal sources because they don’t see 10$ as being worth the arbitrary X gold amount in exchange for the risk of getting their account banned for a TOS breach.
2) people just simply wont transfer gems to gold as they don’t see it worth it
3) the supply of gems in the exchange will disappear leading to shortages where you simply cannot buy gems.

The exchange is great, in my opinion, in determining what 1$ of real world currency is worth in terms of gold by adjusting over time to what a player in the game feels 1$ is worth.

You seem to be thinking that a gem is worth less gold, but the market here is simply disagreeing with you. Personally I find 1.80 to 100 gems unreasonable for me if I wanted to convert my gems to gold. The 3+ gold range seems more reasonable to me.

In an example: You might think a share google’s stock is worth 500$, but you are going to have a kitten hard time getting someone to sell it to you for that price.

Teq could actually get some tweaks to make it much better

1) have players run crystals from the lab to charge the laser
2) leave a poison field around teq that goes up to the bone walls which will prevent players from directly attacking the boss unless the mega laser takes it out
3) teq’s bone walls reflect projectiles requiring melee to take them down
4) the turrets are the primary way to damage teq during the fight, so keeping them operational would be good
5) event fails if mega laser is destroyed <- event needs a failure condition
6) Teq sends vet level enemies to take out the left and right turret banks
7) make a cool flying attack from teq for him to target either the left or right turret banks, with npc verbal warning to get out of the area before it hits – down all targets hit
8) disable close waypoint
9) careful with scaling – as player count wont make teq easier the npc waves he sends should scale in size and veterancy but the hp of teq can stay roughly the same. Alternatively let teq’s hp scale but make each turret attack take off a percentage of his health (like .2% for regular turrets and 10% for the ML shot)

Also you do have a chance of getting a zone level appropriate item instead of an item near your level as well.

Golems are the reason you want to make sure the oil is constructed at keeps. and effective scouting will still spot a golem rush before it can get to the door and you can have your server defending outer or inner pretty quickly.

As far as gold→in game items are concerned I think we are in a period of general deflation. t6 prices are remaining flat but everything under that is dropping, rares are dropping, ectos are dropping.

The only thing that went up was gold→gems and that wont be around forever, well maybe.

All they have to do is what league did in normal queue.

For matchmaking purposes provide an ELO bump to premade teams. This should bump up the full premades out of soloqueue territory while allowing premades vs soloqueue to happen, but the soloqueue players would be much better overall as individuals over the premade queue bringing the win chance to an even 50%.

Made up numbers go:
Player 1a elo 1200
player 2a elo 1300
player 3a elo 1100
player 4a elo 1150
player 5a elo 1000
Team A elo: 5750 * 1.20 (premade) new Team A elo: 6900

then team A would be matched against a team with a total of roughly 6900 elo.

The system would automatically adjust, recording win/loss rates based on how the teams are matched, if a 20% rating boost for premade teams isn’t enough it will automatically up that until match made games are roughly 50/50.

It solves the problem while not splitting the queues. Everyone wins because you as a player are assured that you have a fair chance to win.

This game is really fast paced and has more to do with proper communication than rough skill. I don’t like to pair up randoms and premades. And I wanna actually see a guild-ladder in the future, this would mean they have to split the qeues.

Proper communication is important true

however you can put a mathmatical number on it and adjust the MMR system based on it. At a certain point highly skilled premades wont have any solo queue to match up with, if this happens and the solo q team has a calculated chance to win of 10% then the winning team will get little elo for winning and the losing team lose very little elo for losing. Unless there is an upset ofc.

In a practical sense it will natureally seperate the queues, while letting new premades and unskilled premades to get in fair matches mixed in with solos. Even partial premades.

As far as gvg ladder they dont need to seperate the queues for that either, just any match that is 5 of one guild agaisnt 5 of another counts on the gvg ladder in addition to each players solo rank. If spvp kicks off then they can seperate the queue.
