How to Reduce Culling.

To reduce culling, or even remove culling, Anet need to reduce how much data is needed to be sent to the client. The following are some examples;
Enemy are seen as a single type of creature (a single race type),
Stop sending data relating to each individual enemy’s dye selections,
Stop sending data relating to each individual enemy’s armor,
Stop sending data relating to each individual enemy’s weapons.

Make all the enemy the same creature model (while accounting for class) without all the pretty details (that each individual selects and modifies to their own taste) that we currently have.

+1 this. Giving each class and profession one skin and dye colour according to team colour. They could even make this an option which 80% of people would use.

Except it wouldnt fix culling at all. Not even a tiny amount.

Frankly I am disappointed SE transferred to our server at this time. I dont like transfers to winning servers, and that includes the server I’m on.

And make no mistake right now, Kaineng is winning due to our population and coverage advantages. Ferg is fighting well though so props there, and always massive respect to anyone on ET that stuck with that server through the fall and the megazergs you guys had to fight every week on the way down.

NoQQ is ET now. I saw a raiding party of 5 of em at Speldan Clearcut this evening.

Unless something has changed since Friday there should not be more than (2) NoQQ people on ET @ all. (Real life running interference on me) Now there is a Mesmer on ET so maybe it was their 3 pets + the mesmer & the Elm. Now that would equal 5 ;-}

I will check today to make sure that other (NoQQ) haven’t joined them on ET to make sure

Do you know what I like best about WvW? Enemies using creative strategies to beat me. Something you dont ever get in PvE. They presented you with a problem you had to solve, there are plenty of solutions in the toolkit you could use:

1) build a treb in range of the lord area in QL and counter treb the treb, a treb’s splash area is pretty big and will probably hit, you might need to use a spotter to zero in the shots.
2) build ballista on the ground near it (if you can target it, ballista can hit it with #2 at least)
3) take QL

Completely legit.

BTW you can build a treb that can fire into that open hole as well from the outside, but only in very specific locations on the map. Or, you can take the easy route and build a few ballista and kill the superior trebuchet from below.

Just because something cant be easily counter trebbed from SM doesnt mean its cheating, there are plenty of treb locations inside SM itself that cant be trebbed from the safety of a tower or keep, and that isnt cheating either.

What you are asking here will have no effect on why culling is in place.

Appearance data is only sent once and has no effect on the long term bandwidth load that anet is trying to combat with culling. In effect, blocking apperance data would have such a MINOR effect, it isnt even worth a programmers time, at all. (which is why they now send you dye color data, which is awesome).

Its obvious you think you have a solution, but that solution is so far off base, it wouldnt fix a thing.

You can take that treb out by building a few ballista where you are standing and using the #2 ability.

How about utilize smart play next time instead of whining on the forums about it, like your enemies are obviously doing.

Yep unlimited supply is bad, just have the commander himself build his own siege to full, dont give free supply to players.

Its not a bad idea really. Though its going to run my plans of taking and holding briar keep unless my server has it as its breakout target. Needs a few tweaks.

Ok update: I made it to the end, finally, but I died before I could jump into the present box because I start with just over 10k health, so getting to the end is gunna be nie on impossible.

…Thanks Anet, you really know how to make me ragequit.

The status effect takes a % of your health every second.

It does twice as much damage a tick to someone who has 20k health than 10k.

So in the end, it doesnt matter what your maximum health is.

I did a bunch thinking on the theory that 3 teams provides a balanced matchup, and that in reality for a ‘balaced’ pvp to exist you need a minimum of 4 teams, and a maximum of as many as possible.

The more factions that are in play, the harder it is for one faction to have a complete victory. While 3 teams setups can work, it often ends up creating a third wheel in a fight. if A+B are fighting each other, C can attack either A or B because… well they have nothing better to do. As it is a videogame, and people dont care primarily about holdings, attacking the weakest team is the better move to solitify second place. If team A is 50k points up on you, and a better team, and C is almost equal in points with you, its better for B to attack C, taking score away from C and gaining score at the expense of C. In this situation, A gets to play kingmaker, if A primarily attacks B then B will struggle to take points away from C, and C will probably win.

These scenarios are practically eliminated in a 4 way matchup. If A and B are fighting you have C and D that are looking for a fight. While C or D might attack A and B they are inviting an attack on themselves. Most likely you will have people trade off targets and generally people will gravitate to the one front wars. It also lessens the likelyhood of a server becoming completely dominate. Defeating 2 servers can be achieved right now, but its an order of a magnitude harder to defeat 3 servers at the same time, even if one server quits the matchup you still have two others to simultaniously defeat.

Even more ideal than 4, is PCF or player created factions. A faction system that allows a huge number of factions. In these scenarios, politics comes into play much more readily as players will form their own alliances. Downsides is the level of forum drama will be huge, but that can also be a plus. Look at Eve online, many people follow that game and its political drama even if they never played it. I mean the game itself is pretty bland in execution (the pew pew is in fact, quite boring at times), but brilliant in its sandbox nature.

Ferg is no walk in the park, but devona is fully capable of attacking it and taking keeps from them, especially outside of primetime hours. Ive seen you do it before, last wednesday. Thing is you need to do that early in the week then keep the pressure on so ferg cant upgrade, that way your taking stuff in ferg while taking stuff in kain’s BL so you can get that point spread you need to move up.

10 points is doable by friday, but you gotta start pushing ferg.

I want you guys to not get crushed in the teir above us, considering next week its going to be pretty much a 1 v 1 with HoD in the middle if you do move up. But if you dont move up, you might actually lose your oppertunity to move up as the T7 matchup is going to change and it has a chance of evening out depending on how ET and HoD are recovering. If it evens out we might be stuck with you for multiple weeks, and honestly you are too big for this teir.

People will always seek to get a good bang for their buck, and if gem prices remain low people turn to the ‘black market’ to buy gold. Gem prices need to continue to go up to a reasonable level where it would be sane to transfer $$ -> Gold.

As the price of gems increases people be seeing the gems->gold side of the market as viable, and might actually buy gems for gold instead of seeking 3rd party sellers.

I was with you up until these points which do not make sense. This is the proposition I was given over a month ago:

1 bank tab = 4.6g

And this is roughly what it looks like today:

1 bank tab = 12g.

The exchange rate has seen a 5-fold increase over the life of the game. What was once a favorable proposition turned fair, and since then we’ve seen it go to crazy. If I’m not buying gems directly from Anet, my choices are straightforward: earn it honestly in-game or pay a gold seller.

Yes they are account thieves. Yes they ruin the game. But as the cost to acquire gems using gold goes up, opportunity blossoms. That’s rising demand for gold and they are more than happy to help. By contrast, when the trade rate becomes more favorable, players see that Anet gives them a better deal. In sum, as the buying power of gold goes down, the more that’s needed, the better business gets for gold sellers.

You see but this is why the gem price is inflating. If people can and are buying gold from gold sellers to buy gems at a cheaper rate, that increases the demand on the gems spiking the price, until the price point is reasonable enough that people will stop using gold sellers all together.

They do.

As far as number 2, is they will make the gear accessible through WvW play. They said it being pve only was a mistake that they aim to correct.

As far as how they are changing WvW. They have the sticky thread at the top of the changes for the 14th, which has some nice fixes in it. They also have a major update coming in feb with huge changes to wvw content.

So I would hard pressed to say that anet didnt care at all about wvw.

Also DR doesnt seem to want to move up a tier. Until you start controlling ferg you arnt going to move up till someone simply drops down.

If you want to move up, you actually have to attack ferg. You like dropping your zergs in kains BL every night at 3am instead of Fergies BL at 3am, where we fight you for 2 hours then most of your guys log off too. Thus your score isnt going up.

You keep saying you want to go up, but right now you arent acting like it, and actions speak far louder than words.

Khrums that type of information is not taxing.

Whats taxing is sending locational data + ability data + health data to x clients. Armor, dyes etc is only sent once, and would actually be eliminated as a stresser if culling didnt exist.

Pile 500 people into the same area and arenanet has determined that the server can only handle sending information to each person about 80-100ish objects without laghappyfuntimes.

Its all about magnitude.

Ok lets say for funs sake that there is no culling and a fight happens in SM.

There are 20 NPC’s in ‘visible range’ of the fight. Lets say there are 30 people participating in that fight, and the server is sending location+ability etc every ‘tick’ and each tick is every .1 seconds

For 30 people the server will send 5,000 updates a second (30x(30+20))x10
Now lets double that and there are 60 people (60x(60+20))x10 48,000 updates a second, so doubling the number of people increases the bandwidth load by 10x
Now 500 people in the SM room all fighting: 2,600,000 updates a second.

With Culliing at 80 that puts the updates a second at 500×80×10 or 400,000 updates a second.

Any way you cut it getting a massive battle between 500 people going smoothly is a hard task.

And that is just the expedential bandwidth utilization, not including the CPU load on the server of actually calculating that fight. (which is why AoE is capped)

its going to cap the doubloon market to the price of pebbles + 15% until the supply of pebbles diminishes, if enough people do this.

Just like ectos is capped right now at wood+mithril+bones+15% due to crafting rare weapons and salvaging for ecto. (huge oversupply in all 3 items).

Also this isnt risk free, as you can always get unlucky with the RNG, or simply not put a large enough batch in to normalize the randomness of outcomes (but you can still get unlucky).

Dear people complaining about sky high gem prices.

What do you think, in gold a U.S. Dollar is worth in game currency? That is the primary factor to the price of gems. Gem price will continue to climb as the value of gold diminishes as this game matures. It is undeniable that 1g at release was worth more than 1g now.

it is poor, flawed logic. Sometimes, I don’t get where they are coming from and they are so bloody biased. The game mechanics, logic employed by devs coupled with the lack of communication, and poor optimization is losing my interest fast. But hey, lets all just play theives, because they are single target masters. In fact, lets make wvw, just like pvp… where you have thieves, mesmers, warriors and guardians only. Guild wars? no. 4 class wars? yes

The only games that allowed unlimited AoE targetting would end up grinding to a complete stop when a huge force started getting AE’d in a chokepoint. The sheer amount of calculation and bandwidth requirement pretty much murdered servers in past MMOs.

For example if AOE was unlimited: You cast an aoe spell that hits 60 people. the server has to calculate in each tick the total damage to apply to each person, send that information to the person recieving the damage and the person sending it, plus combo information to anyone interacting with the combination field. The damage is based off armor value of the person and the attack level of the person, plus a few random proc rolls that its got to do for each damage tick. So if AOE was unlimited that one spell per tick has a huge amount of calculation to do, and bandwidth to consume. Now imagine a 60 on 60 fight where one force of 60 is concentrated for a second getting hit by all 60 enemies aoe’s. Sure they are going down fast, but during that second its going to lag out completely as the servers CPU will start stressing under that immediate load. It might take the server 10 seconds to do all the calculations it needs to do for 1 second of player activity.

Thus an AoE cap.

Siege is exempt for a couple reasons, 1, its limited in its placement, 2 there is much less calculation to do, as its only based on the opponents armor, there are no proc effects to consider. But even with this we still get lagstorms in sieges where all 3 servers are fighting over the center of stonemist.

The AoE cap has to exist or Anet will have to implement its own form of Time Dilation.

If you want to get an idea what this lag would be like, if you were there in Warhammer when there were lots of people attacking keep or citadel and a bunch of wizards would drop huge aoe’s into the zerg coming up the ramp… LAG… LAG… LAG… everyone dead.

I am sorry, but Anet has totally screwed up siege warefare, and large scale combat due to their limits on player damage via limit to 5 enemies being targeted. So, 10 people behind the wall facing 30, cannot possibly hold because those 10 people are limited in their damage output, and cannot discourage. yet hey, you can portal those 30 in/out and there is no restriction. I don’t get their logic, at all. Oh boo hoo you dont want a player to damage all 30 idiots standing in one huge cirlce? have you seen the current strategies, people just stack on each other so aoe damage only hits 5, and if multiple AOEs hit, it hits 5 diff people, so in reality, its little damage.

Sorry ANET, don’t agree with you on this one at all. YOu have MADE zergs stronger and stronger, and skill is entirely removed. 10 skill players, are limited in damage, while 50 idiots can take anything. The only counter, is to have more players on your side. Skill… not needed, numbers…. needed.

Also not all AoE damage is limited, and not all skills are limited in the number of enemies they can affect.
For example, siege is pretty much unlimited. Reflect skills will block any number of projectiles, and warding will prevent ANY number of enemies from crossing.

Helps when kain doesnt have the numbers to counter attack though, at all.

Strategy like that depends on outnumbering the enemy, splitting off that number of force while still being able to repel kain at cliffside speaks of a significant numbers advantage. And by last night you mean like 2am or later my time, when I left WvW last night we still had all our keeps.

Did it before.

Coverage is the #1 decider on who gets the most points. Extending your coverage by having people sacrifice sleep/work can help with that. Otherwise you need people. Then you need to use those people better overall than the other two servers. We did it when we ousted ferg from first, we extended our coverage in numbers, with the help of SoS in oceanic prime we had the best coverage, and we took first.

Also i giggled at the DR people ‘mad’ at kaing because we ‘dared’ take you BL around reset.

Ohno, someone is taking my things in a video game. Its not like you guys havent taken your share of things out of our BL on an almost daily basis… should we be mad about that? Kain attacks DR because DR is the only legit target right now. Attacking fergs BL requires a lot of people we dont have, attacking DR’s BL helps take pressure off our own BL and EB. Ferg doesnt generally attack our BL because they also cant split their forces to fight us and DR at the same time. If they push our BL with enough people to take it, they will be sacrficing their BL to DR, which I think they are not willing to do.
