These are the Professions we have in GW2:
I pretty much love them all! xD
To answer your other questions:
1. Difference in races? Are some better at some classes or not? Is the difference only story related or is there a reason to go with a specifiq race?
There is ONLY 3 Reasons to choose a Race.
Reason #1: because you like the aesthetics of the character.
Reason #2: You enjoy the Story line of that specific race.
Reason #3: You enjoy specific Elite Race specific cosmetic skills.
Other than that, choosing a Race doesn’t effect your stats or character power in anyway or form! Play the race you enjoy! Play the game your way!
2. Classes. What to choose. I used to play and prefere Blasters in CoH and Corrupters in CoV. Anyone know what I mean and what would be the most like that here?
Just watch my 2 videos and read more details on my written (guide) for how the combat system functions as well as getting an idea of how all 8 professions play in combat. It will hopefully help you choose your first profession you might be interested in trying out.
3. What effect does the choices in the charachter creation do. (background and temper)
When choosing your character’s background information, you are choosing how you want your character’s storyline and personality to begin. This effects your Personal Story which you follow and develope based on choices you make to uncover secrets of tyria and becoming a hero. The choices you make do matter and it does change the direction your story goes. So make sure you enjoy them! Its big part of the game.
4. Is there a real tutorial or is the first mission the tutorial?
The first mission IS the tutorial. The idea of the first mission is to show you how leveling is done. It’s to get you used to exploring and getting involved within the world and the story since there are NO Quests in the traditional form. So happy adventuring!
=)
A followup question. Wich charahcter is the best for solo mode pve play? I dont mind teaming but my work schedule means that i will often have to solo.
solo mode?
ALL professions do well in Damage/Control/Support equally for Solos and Group plays.
Choosing a profession is based on choosing a playstyle you mostly enjoy.
If you watched my 2nd video on “GW2 Combat Demos” it should give you an idea of what style you might be interested in trying out.
Not Only are All Professions self-effeciant when it comes to the combat cores of Damage/control/support in their own unique ways, But the entire game is solo friendly. There are no Quests. Just open world Events, Tasks, Minigames, World Bosses, Personal Stories and such. This means you’ll end up playing with people around you which will make your life much easier. But if nobody is around, you’ll be just fine as long as you understand the Combat basics, which I assume you watched my videos and written guide, you should be fine. =)
If you are new to game, I Highly recommend you watch this video to learn the Combat basics since there are No Roles such as Tanks/Healers/DPS in GW2.
This video explains how the Combat System Mechanics work:
This Next Video gives you an idea of how all 8 Professions play in combat:
I hope these videos help you get a nice head start when playing GW2!
And if you want to read the written (Guide) I recommend checking out the link below for more details:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first
Good luck =)
There arn’t any roles in this game.
You are pretty much responsable for yourself and for contributing with your team mates. Specially in dungoens.
It’s NOT your job to support other players or to heal them. Everyone can support themselves fine in their own ways.
If someone dies, it’s ultimatly their fualt for lacking Damage/Control/Support.
In short…If you are Not dying, then you are fine. If other players lack Control/Support and end up dying anyways, You are still fine since it’s not your fault for their lack of knowledge when it comes to the basic combat mechanics.
It’s important to coordinate “Control” while “Supporting” each other as you contribute “Damage” in your team.
Check this video next:
I hope this helps! You can find Svanir in (hearts of the mists) btw if you wana train with him. =) Good luck!
@DreamyAbaddon
Thanks for those videos and explanations. They’ll go a long way toward helping people understand the GW2 combat system. I think that should be a sticky.
Do you have anything that explains combos?
Yeah you guys can go check out my Written (guide) for combat details as well as “Combo fields & Finishers”
Note: I didn’t write anything about the Combos but if you read below my guide, someone has a fully detailed information about how the Combo fields and finishers work so I advice you check the guide out and look for that in the buttom comments!
Here it is:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first
It would also be nice to see you guys leave a nice feedback comment on my guide to keep my thread bumped up!
I hope this helps =)
(edited by DreamyAbaddon.3265)
Once you watch my videos and understand the core mechanics of Damage/Control/Support, you pretty much can play any profession you like.
Choosing a profession is based on playstyle preferences based on the core mechanics of the combat system. There are no Roles. Sure you can make tanky characters but it’s discouraged to Tank since you will die… xD
Also you are Responsable for yourself and contributing in your team regardless of profession you choose. If you die, it’s your fault since you lacked Control/Support/Damage. It’s your job to keep yourself alive, and to keep yourself useful in a team by coordinating “Control”, and “Supporting” each other, as you deal “Damage”.
There are no tanks/healers/DPS roles.
The game pretty much changed how combat is done.
This video will put you up to speed in how the Combat System actually functions:
After you finish watching that video, check this other video on how all 8 professions
play in combat so you can get an “idea” on what you might be interested in:
Good luck! =) And Welcome to GW2!
I used to use my mom’s laptop on GW2 since beta.
The build i had was:
Intel i3 CPU
HD3000 Intel GPU
4GB Ram
That’s pretty low end right there. Was fine on low settings. =)
But I do recommend upgrading your PC if you are using a Desktop.
My new Desktop build is:
Intel i7 3770k CPU
GTX670 GPU
RAM 8GB
And im running the game on Ultra Settings. =)
First of all, NOBODY should tell you HOW to play your profession.
If you don’t want to use Elixir gun then don’t. As long as you understand the combat basics in how to apply Damage/Control/Support, you can play anyway you want and trait/gear up based on what your playstyle prefferences work best for you.
Also, If you like to check out other professions, Including “Engineer”, you can check out my video below. But Note: Just because I like swaping kits on engineer doesn’t mean you should play the same way as I do. NO.. I encourage you to play your way and master your style.
I hope this video helps you check out Engineer and other professions that may spark your interest:
Goodluck! =) and if u have any questions let me know. Sadly I got school till 10pm PST so I might respond late
I’ve built my own PC… I don’t really “Trust” companies like Sony or Toshiba when it comes to buying PCs because their computers I have experiences tend to always be unreliable.
Only PC I find to be the most reliable for anything would be one you build yourself.
This is my spec -
Intel i7, 3770k CPU,
Ge-force GTX670 GPU,
8GB RAM
And the rest of the other crap doesn’t matter as far as I know when it comes to games. lol I’ve spent like $1,200?
But of course I don’t use it for just gaming… I do video editing and special effects for part of my work xD
Hello GW2 Junkies!
I’m DreamyAbaddon.
I Have played GW2 since beta on the Xbox360 Controller using a software called “Xpadder”.That’s right, I play GW2 execlusivly on the Xbox360 Controller with the layouts I have designed myself. This allows me to play my favorite game “GW2” on my personal preferences that suites me well since I Cannot play well on Keyboard & Mouse.
I Cannot say how thankful I truly am that GW2 DOESN’T have Controller Support, since I prefer to build my own controller schemes using my favorite software, Xpadder, instead.
[Quick Example on my layout]
(Right-Trigger) = Skill 1
(A) = skill 2
(X) = Skill 3
(Y) = Skill 4
(B) = Skill 5(Left Bumper) while held down -> (A) = Skill 6
(Left Bumper) while held down -> (X) = Skill 7
(Left Bumper) while held down -> (Y) =Skill 8
(Left Bumper) while held down -> (B) = Skill 9
(Left Bumper) while held down -> (Right Trigger) =Skill 0(L-Pad) = F1
(U-Pad) = F2
(R-Pad) = F3
(D-Pad) = F4etc.
Additionally:
If ArenaNet Ever decides to (add) Controller Support in the future for GW2,
PLEASE Allow us to Disable Controller Support (Option) so that we may Continue to use such software like Xpadder to play on our own Controller schemes for some of us who are used to them. For those who Don’t know what Xpadder is, please check the site link below to get more information about it for the sake of this topic:
=) Thanks!
You know you can hold buttons for the second ability instead of hold down left bumper and press a button…..
There are 16 buttons on the xbox360 controller. There are more I didnt list but basicly I have 35 keys/Mouse functionality converted into the 16 button controller that reflects my playstyle.
I’m very skillful in playing GW2 with my controller so changing it would make it feel weird for me. So yeah, I like the Controller layout I choose. It feels just right for me.
Here is a quote I like to say “What works for you, doesn’t mean it will work for others”! =P
I would love controller support for gw2. Sit my lazy kitten back on a couch for PvE.
Inb4 the controller being inferior to keyboard and mouse.
You can do that with Xpadder… Look it up.
Also I suggest if they do add Controller Support, to also add an (Option) to disable it so those of us using xpadder can use it without the support interfering.

I use the xbox360 controller and the software I use to emulate keyboard & mouse is xpadder. It’s NOT bannable because I’m Not botting or making 1 button do 3-4 things auto.
Trust me you’ll be fine as long as you don’t bot.
@ Gamerchick
You actually hurt my feelings there… =/
I only wanted to be your friend, and show you around the game and have fun, but problem was you Yelled at me for no reason and blocked me.
That really made me upset…. I didn’t deserve to be treated that way.
(edited by DreamyAbaddon.3265)
I can’t say! =( I only play on xbox360 controller exclusivly. I wouldnt know what to do with a K&M.
I think its a good way of explaining combat in gw2, once u learn to have control of the battle it becomes a lot easier to win fights and stay alive
Thanks!
Problem is, tons of people who complain on the forums dont understand how these basics work. And then complain of lack of trinity when really, this game’s combat system is more skillful because of the lack of trinity. Thanks to the No babysitter rule.
Anyways. I’ll try to keep this Guide updated the best I can for visual Learners.
Now my question would be: Which classes would give me the most fun and diversity from the Mesmer to really alt with?
Hey Berry!
Check this video out that I have made. It shows you all 8 Professions in action and might help you choose a profession you might be interested in.
^-^ Tell me how that works for u
The beauty of GW2 is No Endgame.
PvE is about exploring, adventuring and being part of the big story, the big lore.
My friends and I play together all the time so when ever we needed to do group content like dungoens, fracticals and such, We do it together.
My advice is to make friends and play with them, I recommend a form of Voice chat since it helps you make stronger friendship when you communicate that way. I Like using Skype to talk and game with friends.
So ultimatly I think the best thing for you to do is make friends and actually playing with them and you should be set to go. =) Trust me, its more fun with friends.
I prefer to play in a smaller populated area because I like avoiding server lag.
But your time zone is way different than mine sadly. I’m from California!
-sigh- If Only we had more gamer chicks in California =(
If you are new to the game. I Highly recommend you check this (Guide) out:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first
It will tell you everything you need to know on Professions, Combat mechanics, to Armor/Trait selection to get you started!
Also please do Comment on my Guide to Bump up my Thread! =) That be awesome!
You either “l2P” or “B&C”
=) I just happen to be helpful. Too bad some people don’t see it that way.
Watch my videos and there wont be any more of these soo called “issues”.
lol Gosh I swear… You people all just complain than learn on forums sometimes.
GW2 has a lot of depth in Combat.
Check out this Video on how in depth the combat really is:
You also want to check this Next video to see all 8 Professions Full Potential:

No problem! It’s why I do it.
I’ll probably going to make another video on How to use Traits and get Armors you want.
“How to Build your own Playstyle”. =) Keep an eye out for my next video project.
My Goal is to make the text-guide version less and more Visual on the videos. =)

Please check out my New Video on GW2 Combat system 101 attached to my Guide!
Enjoy the 101 experience everyone! =)
If you are grinding, then you are doing it wrong.
It’s an MMO-RPG. Just play the game and have fun.
There are tons of things to do.
Explore, Dynamic Events, Minigames, Heart Tasks, Vistas, PIO, Jumping puzzles, Mini Dungoens, Story dungoens, Explorable Dungoens, Fractical of Mists, sPvP, tPvP, WvW, Personal Storyline, World boss events, Gathering, Crafting, etc. (The list goes on)
Play the game and have fun, dont grind. The game is designed for u to explore and adventure in a rich Lore envoirment. This is the only mmorpg u can actually apreciate exploring and doing things with others.
Also There are NO such thing of Quests in GW2.
the term “Quest” is flaw since it could mean anything.
Be more specific on what you are trying to do. But ultimatly have fun.
I like the way everything is laid out and the video just tops it off nice job i learned a lot.
Thanks man! Im Glad you like my guide =D
I play all 8 professions. I CANNOT stick with 1-3…
You should check out this Youtube video to see how each professions playstyle works:
I highly Recommend you check this Youtube Video out to get an idea how each 8 Professions fight:
In the End, it’s all about what you are into.
If you want to check out my guide that explains about the combat basics, you can also check out my guide here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first
Before you check out the link BioFringe sent ya,
I Highly Recommend you check out GW2 Combat system 101 (Guide)
Since there are NO TANKS and Healer Roles.
You’ll need to learn all the basics you can.
Here is the Link:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/page/1
This is hands-down the best guide I have seen here on the board. Thanks to the advice here I have improved my combat skills ten fold! This thread needs to get stickied!
Thanks man!
Yeah it would be nice to start seeing this post get a sticky =)
"Just because Player (A) & Player (B) are both playing Warrior Professions, DOES NOT MEAN they are Both Interested in the same Armor/stats type.
Because everyone will have different Traits selected, Everyone will have their own stats they need and are missing."
Since you are new the game, I highly recommend you check out this (Guide) on GW2’s combat system 101 which will also explain how Armor/Traits selection work:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first
This game’s combat system is extremely different than your Traditional MMORPG.
That guide will exlain how the Combat Mechanics are, then explain what Armor/Traits you need as well as selecting weapons
I wrote it for new players and I’m happy to say it also has a short video attached to it to show you how all 8 professions look in combat.
This thread deserves to be added to the stickies.
Yeah I agree!
Thanks for your feedback! =)
Pretty darn good. Everybody is going to have different opinions, but overall it’s a pretty solid guide for beginners.
The one thing I would like to question you on is giving necros a ** on aoe damage. Necros are kings of AOE, only bested by maaaaaybe the ele. You can easily rack up tons of tags in events and wvw by using staff wells and death shroud.
You are right. Thank you for pointing out my mistake. I edited my post to correct the guide.
Of course everybody would also have their own list of utility skills for different situations and builds. I decided to select just 4 utility skills for each profession, even though some professions have a lot more good skills to choose from. I tried to select such skills which would be useful in both pve, spvp and WvWvW.
Check out my video above and (guide) =)
this should be required reading for those coming from WoW. I’m sorry, but there are so many players out there with this “play a role” mindset that its easy to forget what this game is really about.
I agree! People need to learn how this game’s combat system works.
There are no Tank/Healer/DPS roles.
Im making a New video showing how Damage/Control/Support functions and im planning to use Warrior & Engineer for examples. Be sure to check it out when I release it on Youtube and attach it to my New Addition to my (guide)
Let’s keep this Thread Bumped Up for New Players to learn.
I highly Recommend New Players and Vets to check this video out when it comes to choosing Professions. It Shows ALL 8 Professions in Combat in a short 6 minute Video!
((MUST WATCH))
Also Any New and Vet Players SHOULD Read this guide to learn about how
The Combat System works since there are NO TANKS, and NO HEALERs role:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first
(edited by DreamyAbaddon.3265)
Im not experiencing this….
It may be your connection?
Have a check on that.
To answer the question the the game is named after 3 guild wars that happened between the Human kingdoms of Orr,Kryta and Ascalon between the years 1013-1070 AE .
This guy pretty much said it.
Ascalon, Orr, and Kryta where at a Guild Wars after the events of GW1 game.
The Guild is not refered to the Player’s guild but the ingame lore of how the guilds where at war during that time period.
If you havn’t played GW1 then you would be confused lol
I am working on adding a new video that will show players examples on how to execute Damage/control/support while in combat.
It should be a good addition to this guide for visual learners.
My goal is to make this guide as user friendly to all sorts of people.
Thanks for the support and plz do subscribe on my YouTube channel!
There are absolutely NO Tanks and NO DPS, and NO Healers in this game.
If you are New to the game, you should check out this guide that explains how Combat mechanics/traits/armor/weapons function.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first
There is also a video on how each professions play out in combat attached to
The guide. I’m sure it will be a helpful resource in checking out what your style might be.
Honesty, If you are new to the game, you need to learn the basics cause this game doesn’t have tanks, dps, and healers.
This link will take you to the combat Guide you must check out.
It will teach you everything you need to know on how Combat mechanics and Traits/armor/weapons system functions.
Check it out:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first
Also make sure you leave a comment on it so the thread gets bumped up so more new players can see it.
Hope this helps!
there we go. got a simple video of how to initiate combo fields in my second post back on the list of combo fields/effects. only was able to do guardian with light fields, but its better than nothing, right? lol
You need to make a Space on the link so it shows the video box or else it’s just a normal link.
See my video and how it’s placed/
Yeah you can’t tank and shouldnt try to tank or main heal.
Every class MUST be able to use Damage/Control/Support in combat to stay self-effeciant and coordinating with your team in dungoens is vital.
I would highly recommend avoiding anyone who claims to Tank, because they most likely will be the first to die. Just because you can take some hits, doesnt mean you should.
My (Guide) should help explain that, it also has video attachment on it. =)
No problem man!
I play on (Borlis Pass) server if u wana visit me.
You can also (Guest) servers to visit friends so dont worry about picking my server.
Just visit and game with me sometime!
You can add DreamyAbaddon.3265 to your friends list ingame and whisper me if im online =)
I highly recommend all New players to read this (Guide) to learn how the
Combat mechanics function and how the Traits/Armor/Weapons system work.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first
Also take a look at this short video to get an idea of how all 8 classes play in Combat:
This should asnwer all your questions! =) Have fun! Oh and also please Comment on my guide and leave me feedback on your thoughts.
