You never wana choose “Traits Lines” based on those “Stat-Bonus” though.
Traits are good for building your character’s playstyle that fits your style of playing.

Wrong. When unsure of how to trait, you do NOT want to choose your Traits based on the Stats given.

^ That’s what I’m saying above.

Later, when you get more familiarized with the Profession, it becomes an option to go down trees for their stats, and then figuring out what traits you want.*

^ Choosing Traits to build your playstyle is what traits are for. That’s why you read the Traits and see what they do and how they can enhance and work for your playstyle. The Stat-bonus is just there as a bonus, Nothing else. Choosing them for stats primary and not for how the traits work is a big mistake by many.

*: Don’t do this for full squish builds, do it for avant garde builds, like a Boon Duration Mes will want 30 in Chaos for the 30% Boon Duration. The traits are a plus.

^ The Stat-Bonus are a plus, the Traits are for building and enhancing character playstyles.

If all you think about is stats and nothing else, then you’re in big trouble.
This guide is giving information for new players to take advantage of having a good start. The guide does not tell people what to do but how the combat and mechanics work as well as Best ways to figure out how traits/armor work.

Again, it depends. I’m agreeing with you, but I’m also saying that you are wrong in very few cases where it is optional to go down trees for their stats. It takes a lot of thinking to go down a tree for stats, though, and shouldn’t just be a “I WANT 30% CRIT DAMAGE LELELELELELELELEL”

But that’s usually the case: “LELELELELE”! lol
But yeah, It’s not what I recommend for new players.

Just as it’s optional to make your character have full Damage and No Support/control to save themselves… I’d still not recommend it. If that’s what you want to do then nobodys stopping you. =)

And that’s what im saying.

Thank you jedi master. You solve my problem.

@dreamy there are a lot of healer in this game. Know your game

There are NO HEALERS at all in GW2…
GW2’s Combat system is based on 3 Combat mechanics: Damage/Control/Support.
Learn the combat system and perhaps, you’ll understand the moment you focus on only 1 aspect of the fight, the more of a liability you become to the group, and solos for yourself.

Here are videos I recommend you watch:

Video#1: This video will show you what the basic combat mechanics are in GW2.

Video#2: This video will give you an idea of how All 8 Classes apply them.

Hopefully these 2 videos help you understand. Good luck

Different races playing together

DreamyAbaddon.3265

Hi!

My girlfriend and I just started playing yesterday. I am a human and she a Sylvari.

What is the best way to get together and play without missing anything in our personal stories or starting areas? Should one of us just travel to the others area and quest there, then return to our home area to to the story? Is there a point where we can meet up for the same quest eventually?

Any advice is appreciated. I know it’s an MMO and we can do anything, but, I’d like for us both to be able to experience our starting areas and not miss anything if possible.

Thanks!

If you can get online right now, I’ll show you how to meet up ingame and even some tips and advices on GW2. =) Im playing as We speak. See you in game hopefully soonish.

Play GW2 as it should be, with a controller!

DreamyAbaddon.3265

It might feel more convenient using a controller but it’s not at all more efficient than K&M.You will never be as accurate as you are with the mouse when you use the stick.I made a scenario to back it up : Teleports, shadowsteps, blinks in PVP are mandatory. On top of that, the exact location you “land” is crucial too and to make matters worse you have to do act really fast.I cant consider my self doing all the “tricky” teleports(eg random video showing some “secret spots” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pr6gxULn00 )
So, it might be fun for PvE but in PVP would be selfdisasterous at some point.

Anyways,I only use controller for racing games and only for obvious reasons.I feel far more confident with K&M Its all matter of habbit

This is not true.
I play on Xbox360 controller that I have created for my own Layouts.
And I play more effeciantly than most players I bump into for PvP, PvE, or even dungeons.

Choosing to play on the Xbox360 Controller or a K&M is just a playstyle preferences.
Some people are more accurant and effeciant in combat with Controllers than K&M.

Here is the video of me playing with my controller with all 8 Professions as proof to my point:

Again, I play on my own Xbox360 Controller Layouts Exclusivly and you cant find it online since I havnt shared it to public yet.

Comparing unequal skill level players just show lack of arguments.
Sure there are MANY K&M users that are slower than death but how about comparing competitive players? Results will sure be different that you have presented.
Anyways, can you solve me my query? Why if controllers are so accurate and efficient, there is a option called aim-ASSIST in consoles?Doesn’t make sense to me.

By the way, your videos show that yes you can actually play PvE with controllers, if you like but not fast paced PvP(and I am not talking about WvWvW or hotjoin mate).

Well,if you do not accept it and defend controllers foverer further discussion is uneccessary.Relaxable? Yes but not more efficient than K&M.If you claim that you havent reached the full potential of it.

Yes, Aim-Assist is the best thing for controller and it makes controller play accurate for games such as first person shooters and all.

HOWEVER

I am a competitive player and I can sure kill a very skillful K&M player who is just as competitive as I am. Do you know why? It’s NOT because I play on the Controller, it’s because I have access and smooth control configurations that works for my playstyle and so does the other competitive player who uses K & M.

So it is irrelevant if you play with K&M or an Xbox360 Controller for GW2. What matters is you feel comfortable and have easy access to all skills while on the move and dodge because in the end… it’s the better player who wins.

Xbox360 Controller is extremely accurate play if you know how to set it up right that works for you. K & M Has no advantage over xbox360 controls. Only the player and the controller configuration matters.

P.S: I’m a PvPer…

damage, I wanna gera um more toward one on one fights boss fights spvp

That makes no sense…
If you only focus on Damage then you are screwed in combat.

You need to focus on Damage/Control/Support.
These are the 3 mechanics you fight with in GW2 combat system. All 3 are important for survival and contribution of Damage.

If you can do good in 1v1 battle then you can do good in fighting many enemies at once.

Your goal is to be able to fight more enemies at once without dying solo so you can do well on boss battles as well.

Elementalist do Not suck at PvP or PvE.
It’s the players who are either good or bad.

Back to topic:
I feel like in my opinion, The Norn’s Storyline is boring and plain. At least for the starting missions and a little above level 15. Not sure what’s after that though.
This is mainly because my Norn’s goal is to become a “Legend”… That’s kinda boring goal to have in my opinion.

However, I do enjoy all the other Races.
(For example:)
I like the Human Race were my best friend is a trouble maker and got into a gang, so I had to help save his kitten

Like the Charr Race were my Charr is a Spy for Ash legion, and she found Flame Legion (Bad guys) spies. SO I had to learn their evil scheme by going into their hidden base and see what they are up to and find out they planned a huge attk from the inside to have all charrs break legion alliance which is bad.

Like the Asura race where I had created a cool invention and the Inquest Leader Teyo and her gang stole it and called me a fraud. So I had to find evidence that She stole it and that I had the rights to it. Teyo claimed she copy wright the invention.

So yeah, I think it’s interesting. It starts off nice but over time it does to a bit… “eh”
But im sure ArenaNet is working on expanding the personal stories for more to come!

DreamyAbaddon.3265

Why does it matter? All stats are important anyways.
What matters is, what is your play style?

There are 3 Combat mechanics: Damage/Control/Support
You need to learn to apply all 3 during combat for solos and team play.

The question is: What play style do you enjoy applying Damage/Control/Support?
It’s just the matter of style.

This isn’t WoW so dont worry about just the damage.
Pick the class you enjoy playing and build it how you want.

Good luck

What do these terms mean?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: DreamyAbaddon.3265

DreamyAbaddon.3265

People who come from WoW or Rift like to pretend they there are roles such as Tanks/Damage Dealers but in the end, those terms mean nothing.

Choosing traits for your playstyle and getting stats you need for survival and damage contribution is what matters if you want to continue to be an asset to the team or even just solos.

I don’t encourage taking other people’s builds since it’s not your build.
You are better off choosing Traits/stats that fits your playstyle.

Remember: Survival and contribution in Damage is vital in combat.
Lacking 1 of the 2 is a bad idea since there are no healers to baby sit you.

This is untrue. My keyboard is on my lab while I lay back on my chair with my feet up playing on the xbox360 controller. And I PvP better than most who use K&M.

DreamyAbaddon.3265

If an mmorpg has subscription, then the game becomes “Grindfest”.
This is because the developers would be spending more time making grindy recycled contents to keep everyone in the treadmill so more players would be paying to play so they dont fall behind.

ArenaNet opposes this idea and their philosophy is about making the game “Fun” for players to enjoy. In which case, ArenaNet needs to focus on making fun and enjoyable content for lots of players to enjoy instead of grind.

Look at this article posted by ArenaNet regarding that matter:

DreamyAbaddon.3265

I played GW2 beta with Xbox360 Controller using Xpadder.
In my opinion and for my own preferences I like the Xbox360 controller for GW2 100%.

Without my Controller I cannot play GW2 at all. I’d have to return the game since K&M is almost impossible for me to play the game with, not to mention it’s not fun for me either using the K&M for gaming.

It was because of GW2 I got into PC gaming in the first place.
I created my own Xbox360 controller layout that works for my playstyle perfectly.

It’s NOT online and you cant find my layouts anywhere since I made it and I didn’t even share it to public yet. But I have shared it through skype if anyone is interested in.

Might even make a future youtube video on it one day. =)
So far, it feels like GW2 for me is Not playable without my controller and layouts.

This guide is great, ive had this game since it came out and never understood it, last week I finally decided to try it out haha. This Video and Guide helped me ALOT, i came from World Of Warcraft and Tera and this game is different i like how i focus on me more than others (on WoW i played as a Priest). But much appreciation to this man!!!!!!

Yeah I also played Tera.
GW2’s and Tera’s combat system are very different.
If you ask me, Tera’s core combat is based on the Holy trinity like WoW while GW2 breaks that tradition and redoes everything.

Though they are both different games, combat wise, they are more of a personal style preferences. GW2 just feels more polished in my book without the trinity.

When you have a game that everyone is self-efficient, skillful play takes the priority rather than a class specific. Though we still need to balance a few classes here and there. There hasn’t been a perfectly balanced mmo in history that I know of… yet.

Actually I will look in to if my program allows me to put in a mouse click+ mouse movement- that might work. I have a 360 controller but am not sure I have the hardware that lets me use it on my computer.

I am using a program called Xpadder.
I highly recommend it:
http://www.xpadder.com/

Also, I do NOT recommend to input your right analog stick with Mouse Click+ Movement for your “Camera”. I have test that out and it is really REALLY BAD and Inefficient.
Trust me, I tested it all out during beta of this game.

As for “Hardware”, if you are using a wired Xbox360 Controller, you Don’t need any other hardware. But you’ll need the Driver for it which you can find here for free:

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/d/xbox-360-controller-for-windows

HOWEVER, If you are using a Wireless Xbox360 Controller, you need to make sure the Wirless Xbox360 Controller is the Official controller that takes normal AA Batteries. You’ll also need a Wireless Receiver from Microsoft which you can find here:

http://www.rakuten.com/prod/white-wireless-gaming-receiver-for-microsoft-xbox-360-pc/241546332.html?listingId=241660341

As for figuring out how to put best layouts and making your controller work for efficiency in GW2, You’ll need to contact me through Skype which you can download free from here:

I can only help you setup stuff if you are willing to contact me.

Just recently I was in (Heart of the Mists) with a friend doing 1v1 Dueling.
I do them with my friends a lot for Fun. We test out each other’s build and put it against each other.

(Yes) Random people join and
(Yes) I let them know we are doing 1v1 dueling

&
(Yes) some listen and kindly back off
(NO) Some don’t listen and ruin the fun so we have to keep leaving match and re-enter an empty one in “Hopes” no one like that would ruin it.

This is the (Only) way to do 1v1 dueling with a friend and having access to all Weapons/Utilities/Traits/Armor sets for the sake of “Fun”. There are no other ways yet.

A Developer told me there will be “Custom Arenas” where we can host our own Private PvP matches for our friends to join only. When that day comes, this should not be an issue anymore.

For now: Try avoiding low populated server matches and join the populated ones so you can play the way it’s intended for your sake.

I dont know how you would use a controller to play GW2,
However, I play GW2 on the Xbox360 Controller since Beta and I designed it in a way where you dont ever need to use a Keyboard and Mouse ever again. You can play effectivly and effeciantly on your bed or chair and layback.

I don’t know why anyone would want to use a gamepad, really. I mean for this type of game. Really better off getting a track ball and gaming key pad… or even a portable 10-key. Works great sitting in a recliner and such. They are useful for sims though, like aircraft sims or FPS’ with heavy vehicle combat. But I could never see a real edge using it in first to third person mode games. But yeah, should work with a game pad.

I CAN’T play GW2 with a Keyboard and Mouse. It’ awkward for me and seems impossible.

With the Xbox360 controller, I have better mobility and fast reactions of using skills I need based on different combat situations.

Here is a Video on how I play ALL 8 Professions using only my Xbox360 Controller:

It’s a personal preferences. Some people do better with Xbox360 controller like myself, while others prefer the keyboard and mouse.

Sorry, I just play way better on controller. I’ll die fast without it. =/

just like elementalists can be healers and such, the roles still exist and people can play those roles if they want, they just aren’t distinct.

No matter how many times you state otherwise doesnt change that fact.

I have done a lot of runs on Dungoens without Guardians, Elementalist, and Warriors. It goes pretty fast, effeciant, and smooth without Tanks/Healers wana beees.

The goal is to coordinate Control/Support while contributing Damage in group runs.
The moment someone handicaps themselves by lacking 1 of the 3 combat mechanics in Damage/Control/Support is the moment I’ll be disbanding party without hesatation since I refuse to babyist someone who chooses to die a lot by Tanking/taking hits or not doing anything but button smashing skills for high dps.

(And yes, I have done that plenty of times before) – Which my solution was to play with friends rather than PUGS.

Not saying you have to do what I do, but I am saying Tanking is useless as much as being a healer/support. You are Responsible for yourself and contributing in your team. You are no good if you end up dead.

Move, Dodge, Support yourself, Keep control of fight with your group and deal Damage to kill enemies fast as possible.

You may Not want to accept how the combat mechanics function, but that doesn’t mean you have to feed false information. There are no specific roles. That’s a Fact.

You can Build a Tanky character, but you’ll ALWAYS have Damage/Control/Support skills as well as moving and dodging to keep you in control of fights to evade attks.
Don’t use your skills? Then you’ll end up dead and it’s your fault. Don’t blame the team for your mistakes for not coordinating skills needed to keep yourself alive and an asset.

I dont know how you would use a controller to play GW2,
However, I play GW2 on the Xbox360 Controller since Beta and I designed it in a way where you dont ever need to use a Keyboard and Mouse ever again. You can play effectivly and effeciantly on your bed or chair and layback.

If you are interested in my layouts and how to set it up ingame, PM me and I’ll get back to you and give you my Skype info so we can get you setup =P

DreamyAbaddon is it necessary to copy/paste that post into a thread where “Guardian” is a very concise and correct answer?

No because “Guardians” are NOT Tanks.
Read my previous post and watch my videos.

GW2 Combat System 101 (Guide)

The guide is great. I am a new player and was lucky to have DreamyAbaddon help me out in-game. I totally had no idea that I could actually go on and test-drive professions in the Mists area and his tip on that and the testing encounters there was invaluable.

I think that tip should be added, since it is simply amazing and new players won’t think about trying out going to PvP area at level 2, while it is just awesome place for the new players to help them chose their profession and see how it is done.

So, big thank you for the guide and I really liked 8 professions video. Would be nice to see another one with different weapons, just to give the idea how different it can be in the same profession.

Yeah, Actually this is a good idea! I might make a video on where a newbie can find the area and how to test drive their professions if they are new.

It’s never good to assume they know about it so I might add it to the (Guide)

Easy question for those who know! I want to make some sort of tank and I am wondering what the experts might consider the “best” proffesion for this?

Thanks in advance!

This game doesn’t have a Tank/Healer/DPS role.
And there are no BEST professions. Just professions you like based on your play style.

I recommend you watch this video to learn how the combat system and mechanics function:

Also check this next video out to get an idea on how ALL 8 Professions play in combat. You can also use this as a (Guide) to get an idea on what your style may be:

I have to disagree with people stating that the game does not significantly change at 80. There are several important reasons to knock out those levels, IMHO:

  • Level 70-80 rares drop, which are a notable source of income.
  • You can equip exotics, and wear them into WvWvW
  • Daily reward from world bosses
  • Low level friends will benefit greatly from your aid, as long as you make sure they’ve had a chance to tag something before you oneshot it. And you’ll be equally entitled to rewards, including the aforementioned rares.

None of the things you mention will matter if the player doesn’t enjoy the core game play, which is what you experience on your way to 80.

If you find the game play boring, what does wearing exotics or getting better loot change to your enjoyment?

This “slow down and enjoy the journey” tripe gets repeated every time this question gets asked

Because the players who ask this question are invariably the same ppl that end up posting “theres no end game and it sucks” threads 2 weeks later.

we’re just trying to save everyone some grief by telling them to cut their losses early.

I 100% agree with this.
Just quit the game and leave if it’s boring to level because that’s what PvE is all about. It’s about leveling to unlock newer areas to explore to do contents you enjoy during the adventure and storyline.
