If you had really seen all the pain and misfortune you’re calling attention to, I would think you would be in favor of making the world a better place. I would think you would be the first to step up and encourage people to treat each other kindly, and not make even more problems.

re: the 90s are calling. They want their SourceSafe and CVS (the source control, not the pharmacy) back. – Well, it’s not a primer for engineering students. It’s a post on a forum with a quick and simple explanation for forum-goers without a software engineering background. To help them better understand some industry-specific terms and concepts that are being thrown around. To help them understand the issues, and why we may not be able to get fixes as quickly as we all want them.
So the outdated terms I used are okay in this context. Please tell the 90’s I won’t be returning their call.
But if you would like to put up a clearer, more accurate explanation, with more up to date terms, please feel welcome to do so.(I’m totally serious) And if I like your explanation better, I’ll replace my post with a link to yours.

For those of you who haven’t worked in the software programming/developing industry, this is what all the “version control software” and “proper documentation” stuff is about:

Version control software is what companies use so that multiple developers can work on the same project, and not be tripping all over each other.(ideally) But they have to use it, and use it properly.

Version control software kindof treats the various libraries, objects, subroutines, etc… like library books – only 1 person can have it “out” at a time. And there are records of who “has it” at any given time.

A software company has developers A, B, and C all working on the same project. So they’re using version control software to help them be more productive:

Dev A is working on Subroutine 999. He has it “checked out”, so when Dev B goes to access it to make his changes, the version control software tells him that he must wait, because Dev A is already working on it. And he can see notes from Dev A explaining why he has Subroutine 999 checked out and what he’s doing. But here is where the library analogy breaks down. Dev C who (like us) wants to get fixes in quickly, accesses Subroutine 999 without going through the version control software. So Dev C makes changes while Dev A is also making changes. Neither one knows about the other’s changes, and they clash and make a bug. Or Dev C does go through version control, but he’s in a hurry, and doesn’t read Dev A or Dev B’s notes about Subroutine 999. Or he doesn’t make notes about his changes. Any of this leads to problems because people are working on code without knowing fully what’s going on.
Dev C is not a necessarily bad guy. He just wants to get his changes out quickly so that stuff gets fixed.(or implemented) So he doesn’t want to take the time to go through all the proper steps – he just wants to get it done.(Quickly!) But then there are consequences. Because the code is so vast, that you can’t just look at it and see the whole thing. You have to rely on other people’s notes to tell you what’s gong on.

Some developers are very bad about documenting their code, or their changes, or both. That’s fine if you’re the only one working on a project, and as long as you continue to work on that project.(Well, not really, but you can get by.) But if you are no longer working on that project, or there are other people working on it, then the code needs to be documented. And if you make changes, they need to be documented. Or it all starts to fall apart because people don’t know what other people are doing, or have done.

Or maybe the version control software is not doing it’s job well. If it’s hard to use, or doesn’t work well, then it can make everything much more difficult. If you make something difficult to do, slow to use, or it doesn’t produce good results, many developers are likely to avoid/skip/go around it. This may be the issue, or may also be the issue.

Hopefully this sheds some light on why we’re harping on this stuff like it’s so important.

re: if there is actually a version control software being used – For a project the size of GW2 they would have to be using version control software, or GW2 wouldn’t even work at all. Either it isn’t very good version control software, or developers are not making good use of it.
Either way it’s a management problem. Get better version control software, or make people use it, and use it properly.

First off, being rude and disrespectful never gets you what you want. Being polite isn’t guaranteed to work, but being rude is guaranteed to fail. I’m glad that they’re actually posting here on the official forums instead of Reddit.

Second, don’t shoot the messenger. Gaile isn’t the CEO of Anet or a dev, either. She’s the person who is passing the information to us. She has no direct control over any of it, so please don’t address her directly with your frustrations.(As if this is her doing.) Yes, please let her know politely how this is messing up our game play, but don’t take it out on her. Her job isn’t to make the game, it’s to communicate with us.

re: test for 3-5 maybe 10 accounts before push to main servers? – Yeah, they’ve done that. They’ve probably tested with dozens or hundreds. But some problems don’t show up except with higher numbers that you can’t test with.

re: How one manages to mess up the player settings, without actually changing anything with them, is beyond my comprehension as a developer. – But they are changing them, they’ve added more choices and keybinds in the options menu. Which evidently is throwing things off. And somehow that slipped through the cracks.

Don’t think I’m excusing Anet. I know that it’s impossible to ship bug-free code. But even still I think Anet is shipping code with more than an excusable amount of bugs. I’ve worked in a development environment, and I am reasonably sure Anet’s software control and documentation policies and procedures are either not effective, or are not being properly enforced.(Changes and fixes would be quicker and have less bugs otherwise.) Or maybe they’re understaffed,(for the workload) or management does not have reasonable expectations. There is some reason for the relatively large amount of bugs per patch, and the relatively long handle time for fixes. But I’m not going to accuse them of not testing at all, or be rude about _ it. I would say respectfully, that we can see there is some underlying problem, and we would please like to have it addressed. So that Anet releases better code, with less bugs, and has a shorter turnaround time for fixes.

We need to please be polite, or at least civil in our responses to them. It’ no wonder they post on Reddit instead of here. :p

Thank you Anet and Gaile for posting this response about the options settings bug.

My (super tiny) guild is going to try and claim with a party of 4. Can anyone please give us advice for this fight? We do not have any Warriors/Berserkers, and have 1 Mesmer that is not also a Chronomancer. I think that we have at least one of every other profession, though.
We are going to try with a party of 4 first, then add more if that fails. We understand that we should not go above a party of 10, because it will start to scale up. Looking more for strategy and tactics, rather than “Use <this> gear and eat <this> food”, type advice. We have already looked at the dulfy guide.

Also, what does the “base” guild hall come with? Does it even have a merchant and armor repair, or is it just bare walls? I will probably make a separate thread regarding best way/order/method for upgrading, so please hold that sort of info, thank you.

We know that we need all party members to have Exalted Lore 1, or some kind of portal to reach the starting point for Gilded Hollow. We know that gliding is a requirement to get to the starting point for Lost Precipice.

Finally, what advantage/benefit does one hall have over the other? Why did you/would you choose the one you did?

[Suggestion] Normal version of raid

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Elden Arnaas.4870

Elden Arnaas.4870

The bottom line is, if “not enough” people do raids, then Anet will nerf them. So both sides(casual and hard core) need to present an united front (now, while we can still make a difference) and request that raids have a scaling difficulty similar to fractals. This scaling system has already been implemented in other GW2 content,(fractals) and works well. So I would suggest that we please come together and get behind fractal-like scaling difficulty for raids, before Anet goes crazy with the nerfs.(Because you know eventually, they will.)

18 slot bags are a much better value, IMO. Though you do sacrifice 2 slots per bag, they’re about one-quarter the price.

You can easily sell most stuff that you don’t want to salvage. Though you may lose money, it seems that you want less busy work. I can sympathize. Low values runes and sigils that you can’t sell on the TP are generally below 19 copper each. If your guild has a guild hall, you can pop in there(G screen, click on the “enter guild hall” button in the upper right) and sell them to the merchant, then pop right back to where you were.(same button) In our guild hall, the merchant is very close to where you enter the guild hall. I don’t know if this is standard.

Agreed with the above, mystic salvage kits are a good value, as is the copper fed salvage kit.

The confusion aura is easily visible and distinctive without this “visual clutter”. It doesn’t need multiple animated figures flitting around in it to be recognizable. I don’t really care what the confusion aura looks like, so long as it’s distinctive. Why didn’t Anet start with stuff like that?
