Let’s hope and see if Bobby plans to come back to this and clear things up.

Probably the Star Wars fans, the ones as dedicated as here that are mad, do lash out and are mad at those inconsistancies however small they are.

In this case though, we’re not mad about small inconsistencies. We’re mad about articles like this one:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Shadows_in_the_Water_%E2%80%93_The_Krait

Which according to Bobby, could now be completely discarded, since it isn’t in-game. If all of the official articles released by Anet are subject to change, because they aren’t in-game, then what the point of releasing the articles? How is the lore community supposed to make any sense of it all? Do lore articles and interviews still have value then?

If you’ve spend the last 7 years gathering a wealth of Guild Wars lore, based on 60% out-of-game sources (and I’m just throwing out a rough percentage here), and suddenly the writers declare that all of that could be changed at the tip of a hat, then you can imagine why some of the lore fans are upset.

Edit: Still haven’t gotten an anwser as why it is thought that Bloodstones are retconned.

Angel stated as such on the forum. She basically stated that the humans back then believed that the Bloodstones brought all magic to Tyria, but they were wrong. It’s a pretty blatant retcon to completely invalidate the GW1 manuscripts. And it makes me furious. The entire Flameseeker Prophecies revolves around this plot point. The entirely of Guild Wars 1 is about the importance of the Bloodstones, and their effect on Tyria. It has changed the landscape (like the Maguuma Jungle), causing the water to have healing abilities, and various factions are fighting over it. The White Mantle, the Mursaat, the Shining Blade. Pretty much all of the big factions in GW1 are concerned with the Bloodstones because they are this powerful. And we haven’t even found all of the Bloodstones yet, including the keystone. This was a pretty big thing. But apparently the writers have decided that in favor of a multi-race game they don’t want to deal with the human gods or the Bloodstones any more. So it has been completely thrown out the window. The entire story of GW1 was a joke apparently, based on the ignorance of the humans back then. Yeah, good job writing team. Have some bloody respect for your own lore.

And the calendar thing… 5 days? Is it really THAT kitten important? It’s been months and some of the people here can’t forget that like if it was some major lore breaking point. It’s not good, but wow, it’s not THAT bad.

I’m less upset about the calender, and more about the trend. I want the writers to respect established lore, which shouldn’t be a hard thing to do. You can easily write around established lore, that’s what it is there for.

I think he meant “external sources”, as limited to interviews and what devs say on the forums, because sometimes -and they’re at fault there- they say an opinion or their point of view at certain point, when it’s not exactly what’s going to be in the end product or what the entire team agrees to.

Documents such as the one you linked and manuals are made internally, as well as the books, and if not, they’re approved internally as well. Besides, parts of that document were included in the Tower of Nightmares dialogue too, so invalidating them for some reason would be dumb.

Bobby’s last line probably was taken too literal, in my opinion. But, it also was badly phrased by him.

-

As to Bloodstones, I do understand their importance from what’ve read in these two years, but they’re not completely neglected (in-game at least) and seeing how we’re now close to one, they might come into play again. So far, we’ve not been near them to make them that relevant. If I remember correctly, it was that french article? Yeah, that was dissapointing, but it’s not been “oficially” retconned in-game nor in the article if I recall correctly, just given less importance due to their nature and how it’s a multiple-racial-viewpoint game now, nor the calendar AFAIK has been retconned. Only mention of the extra days are in said piece of wreckage.

But, I do see the points being made and sucks to have the uncertainty that now anything said externally could mean squat.

For those people who don’t understand, this isn’t about any bit of lore, it is about time. People don’t like investing time in something and then not getting personal fulfillment from that time investment. People invest time into MMOs in a lot of different ways and can often be disappointed. Some people have invested time into this MMO’s lore.

It’s about both. They loved the lore and invested time on it. So if the team starts butchering things or taking a new path they don’t like, they’ll be dissapointed.

What interview?

:What we know about Steam Creatures is that they were invented by the PC in an alternate future, according to the PS. We could’ve based those designs on Scarlet’s remnants or taken as inspiration or imitation when they were found.

I don’t see the contradiction.

Those were stated steam creatures and steam creatures are invented by Scarlet before 1325. The ‘future PC’ stated that steam Creatures weren’t invented yet in 1325. Taken as inspiration would mean that they would have an other name. And improving is also ridicolous because then we invented the dagger because we can make an ascended version.

Edit: And as RedStar mentioned, it’s based on conjectures and opinions, it’s not a stated fact.

Then we might as well have no lore at all, because any ‘stated fact’ is based on the conjecture that the source is correct.

For the sake of the argument, why would we have to believe what the future PC said is true? It’s likely that it could have been a lie to cover up that he, indeed, did not invent them, but that’s what he said to everyone else. Matches asura behaviour, specially one twisted and corrupted as the future PC.

Maybe I’ve been too much time away from the game, but when exactly they did offically retcon Bloodstones? Because it doesn’t seem so.

And regarding Bobby’s post, I think it was taken with a little too much seriousness. Things -ideas, concepts, possibilities- that were said or discussed at one point, of course, can change when it’s actually time to make them true because you’ve to factor in a lot of things or maybe a better idea came up. There’s nothing wrong with that and it’s a normal creative procedure in any company.

Just going to say you guys outdone yourselves with the quality of the story and content so far. Keep at it, good work!

The whole community, in general, is loving season 2 so far.

Speak for yourself.

Oh, I was, and for the general community that hasn’t invested their souls in the lore and are quite happy with the content in this season.

I do understand the anger you or Konig or anyone like that could feel after all those years and countless hours analyzing the lore inside out and enjoying the game. But that’s not really the majority, and no matter how hurt 2, 3 or 10 people are about how lore has changed regarding the first game, it’s not statiscally important for the developers or company.

And yes, season 1 was a complete indigestion as you put it, but they have learnt quite a bit from it and are continuing to put better content and story out. It’s not Dante’s Divine Comedy, but I’m, so far, enjoying it. Perhaps because I never experienced nor lived through Guild Wars like you or Konig; only invested several hours reading about it and a few playing the start of it. And that’s what makes up most of the community now, and Anet sees they’re mostly happy, so what matters is the big picture for them.

Move along (as you have) and keep your good memories of the game I’d say. They, probably, won’t be matched by its new version and you’ll continue to dissapoint yourself.

Well they did move away from most of the things they said during development (see the manifesto), it only figures that interview-lore isnt sacred either.

Unless we’ve built content around something, it’s usually considered malleable from a design and lore standpoint. Occasionally we decide to go in a different direction months or years after the first ideas are documented or even talked about externally. In some cases that means what one member of staff says in an interview can change when it comes time to building a release. It’s part of our iterative process.

In short, go by what’s in the game.

I wouldnt even mind to rely only on lore that is presented in the game if there would be enough lore in the game. Im still hoping for some kind of codex in the hero panel.

My advice for you and others who care about the lore is to let us know what you think of the implementation in season 2. We’ve put a lot more resources into seeding each episode with loreful bits.

As always, thanks for playing and letting us know what you think.

The Triad seems the most logical approach, considering their location and assuming they already have crossed Brisban Wildlands from Fort Vandal and (despite how we see they don’t know how to repair a bridge) and the other side, forgot name.

It seems we will see Aetherblades, too. And probabluy further on, Mordremoth’s minions. And, of course, any other natural threat from the Maguuma. That devourer sure does look angry.

Zephyrites heading west.

in Lore

Posted by: Eluveitie.1290

Eluveitie.1290

Well, it would have to be a new continent, one we’ve never heard of. That said, there’s still the possibility that they went west for reasons unrelated to their plans- maybe their attackers forced them to divert, maybe something lured them west… normally, I’d favor the simplest explanation, but simply because there’s been no indication of civilization west of Tyria I’m inclined to believe there’s something more going on here.

They seemed pretty calm and Zen before the attack, so diverted doesn’t seem like a reason. Those explosions look like Aetherblades cannons, and we know they are indeed still active and have previous orders from Scarlet – which we don’t know what are exactly… yet. They were probably ambushed.

What could they want from the west? Anyone’s guess, but Drax’s theory is probably correct, there’s a settlement or something somewhere around there we did trade with back then.

Not sure it has been mentioned, but has anyone commented on the dialogue on the ship where two NPC’s mention something along the lines of seeding crystal’s dust on the clouds when they’re higher up? I’ve been thinking a lot about those lines and I can’t really get any good speculation out of it – alas not one that would make much sense yet.

Sounds like cloud seeding here – tossing dust (silver iodide?) up into clouds to encourage rain. Haven’t seen the conversation, so they could mean something entirely different.

Pretty much that seems to be the context. It could be the reason, not much of a scientist here so didn’t know that, but interesting point.

There’s still many things left unanswered. Mr. E, for example, said something along the lines of (couldn’t find any wiki page stating what he said) dark forces at work in this city (Divinity’s Reach) -hint at Mursaat again- and the world -not dragons I’d assume. Probably the entity is related to those “dark forces.”

Also, Scarlet states that “these forces can be set against each other”, so my guess is that she’s referring to the entity -that could be part of a larger whole- and the dragons, or specifically, Modremoth.

Eluveitie.1290

To kind of elaborate on the Scarlet bit, she is (well, was) a supergenius sylvari who was driven into Joker-style insanity after an asuran experiment exposed her mind to the voice of a malevolent entity, widely believed by the playerbase to be the sixth Elder Dragon, Mordremoth. The entire living story has centered around her plots, one of which was waking Mordremoth, which required reaching the magic that just so happens to be flowing under Lion’s Arch- thus the attack and the giant drill. She used her supposedly silver tongue to amass armies to fulfill her manpower and technology needs- the alliances Elu mentioned, plus a repurposed model of human-made robots that she stole from Kryta.

I was completely vague as to not spoil it for him, but pretty much this is the synopsis you would be looking for.

Mordremoth's Messy First Meal

Eluveitie.1290

Hey Eluveitie,
I was discussing my own misgivings about this issue with an in-game friend and he pointed out that he didn’t see the inconsistency. So I suppose that some would consider that I’m just being pedantic.

Still, I’m not sure what to make of any attempt to explain how Omadd’s machine severed Ceara’s link to the Dream, empowered her to break free of the mental restraints blocking Mordremoth’s access to her mind etc etc when the short story “What Scarlet Saw” involves an exchange between the Pale Tree and Ceara whilst the latter is inside Omadd’s machine, supposedly “viewing” the Eternal Alchemy. This suggests to me that the machine was not able to impede the Pale Tree’s connection to Ceara at all. Furthermore, if Ceara alone was behind the breaking of the mental restraints placed inside her own mind by the Pale Tree, Dream, or whatever, how could she do it? Moreover, why is she the only one that could/has?

That’s a question probably only a dev could answer, because everything anyone can do here is just speculate and theorize. But I wouldn’t get my hopes high, seeing how much explanation we got in the finale.

As Vorpp said, we need to know more about the Dream and how it works, before drawing to conclusions. All I can theorize is that the machine weakened the link between Ceara and the Pale Tree somehow, thus allowing the entity to cut deeper into her mind slowly, and eventually gained control over her.

The Soundless cut themeselves by choice, but it’s not permanent and they have to persist on meditating to achieve being in that state constantly. But the Pale Tree still has influence on them, so whatever method she utilized to wall-off certain part/s of their psyche is still active on them.

That was not the case with Ceara. Omadd’s experiment broke off the barrier, and thus must have had created a weakness that the entity took advantage off to take control of her and cut her connection to the Dream.
