I actually don’t have much to say on the ele fights but against the DH you atleast made the same mistake several times. Don’t attack when he has Shield of Courage up. You need to kite with staff when he puts that up. Preferably staff 5 so it breaks the shield. When fighting DH, you should save that unblockable fear for that very occasion.
i was trying to see if I could rotate and get behind the DH when he had his shield of courage up XD
I don’t run with unblockable marks sadly so I really am at a loss on what to do when he ups his Shield of courage…
The only thing I could possibly do is save up my corrupt boon for when he ups his shield to corrupt his stab and fear him and buy me some kiting time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
The d/f ele was very bad on top of being at a disadvantage vs reaper. The staff ele wasn’t terrible but spent too much time trying to damage you in shroud instead of kiting it. He honestly didn’t put out enough damage to reasonably beat you unless you made a mistake with shroud
I thought he would outsustain me but in the end I prevailed =/
which surprised me…because he just kept healing and healing…

I’m seeing more and more staff tempest roamers in WvW.
And they are surprisingly pretty strong!
I fought one staff ele at the end of the vid and one ele in the mid that I couldn’t tell what weapon he was using =/ dagger + something? How did the tempests and I do this time?
He is using dagger+focus.
ah…thanks! no wonder the skills seemed different from a D/D ele.

We need futuristic armor/weapon skins.
The current medieval fantasy style is cool but limiting.
We need high-technological futuristic armors and weapons so we can create characters that look like those in apple-seed or the ghost Nova/kerrigan from Starcraft.
Please consider giving us these futuristic styles!
Something like this:

If you ever see a guardian get down to less than 50% health and he hits Renewed Focus (3s invulnerability and reset of all his virtues) he is trying to reset his Wings of Resolve to heal back up. It can be interrupted easily if you have a hard CC off cooldown. Our virtues go on full cooldown even if they fail and that will cut off 5-6k of his healing.
I’m not sure how many Guardians still use Shelter as their healing ability at this point, but if you have unblockable marks you might save your fear to counter Shelter, which would cut off another ~5k healing.
Going to be hard interrupt Shelter with staff#5 unless you got super fast reflexes or you’re waiting out for the guardian to Shelter with fear mark already ready to set down. Shelter is 1.25s, and staff marks are .75s, giving you half a second to react – and that’s if you’ve got no other skills on queue.
I agree with the above.
i used to run unblockable marks and it was not easy interrupting the heal =(

I find it quite hard to interrupt wings of resolve as a reaper. my best option is to time my elite shout to interrupt him as he comes out of renewed focus. but my elite shout has a big tell.
won’t be easy for me to land a staff 5 fear i think as he is jumping around.
also won’t be easy for me to land a shroud 3 fear which is in melee range =/

This is pretty much why i left the necro class. The problem here is the fights were way too close, for a class that has no decent blocks or disengage skills it is really bad if one person can do that much damage and has the skills to prevent you from doing damage. That is what this studio cant seem to understand
Unfortunately the DH wasn’t very good. She had all the skills she needed to avoid taking any damage from reaper shroud and then hit you hard afterwards but she didnt use them until the damage had been done.
If up against a really good DH you would have been extremely frustrated especially since you are using power. Sure you could take the shout for unblockable, but you would something else really important.
she felt good enough for my level XD
I do agree the build could be tweaked for an easier fight against the DH. like using unblockable staff trait (helps a ton against block-heavy classes), unblockable shout trait, rise. I prefer roaming and fighting with one build though lol.
Actually I would love to see some really skilled power reaper videos against other similarly skilled opponents. I want to see how others fight and how I can improve…but so far I’ve not really seen any…
Most of the power reaper vids are against a lot less skilled opponents or they are running with their friend/s and not solo-roaming…

The last I checked, which was like yesterday, I think Never Die [ND] guild was still in TC.

Prepare yourselves.

I’m witnessing one of the bloodiest fights in the history of WvW.
Massive Zergs facing off one another at every turn, name calling, insults, fist-waving, chest-thumping, war-cries.
These few days since reset has been a battle for the ages, full of hot blooded men of war, crashing into one another, sword striking on metal, shields slamming into shields, hammers swinging left and right.
The battlefield has been marked with shattered souls and crushed bodies.
Things have never felt more right.

don’t burn important cooldowns frivolously.
Not gonna repeat what others have said, but tying into this, learn how to cancel-cast your elite by stowing your weapon. I noticed you missed it quite frequently due to dodges or being out of range, especially agains that s/d thief. On top of that, even when you cancel Chilled to the Bone, the animation will still complete, which can catch a lot of people off guard when you use it again a few seconds later.
Thanks for the tip! I noticed this too. Reaper Shout Elite is very easy to cast, cancel and then trick/bait opponents into wasting their dodge/cooldowns.
I am still practicing to incorporate this into my play-style though.
Hopefully I’ll get better at it!

You could ask your friend to try the build as below. Works well with Dire too. Sounds like your friend might be new to reaper roaming. Dire is less punishing and will allow for more mistakes.
The build is ‘noob’ friendly too. Easy to play. Given the way chill works now, no crit chance needed for this build.
Oh and it is cheap to build.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
For one… use food buffs :P
First fight at 5:20, you should have released from Shroud on his disengage and healed. He burned his gap closes and SR, so he would have had to make it very apparent he was going to re-engage you. This period would have let you maintain better health and apply ranged pressure and regen life force in his moments of weakness.
Fight two you were just way too aggressive and left shroud when he didn’t burn any of his utilities, giving him a lot of options to quickly kill you with little risk.
The third fight near the 6:00 mark, you chased him while he had Shadow Return available, which would cause any engages you make to be wasted.
You’re very predictable in how you combo RS 3’s fear into Executioner’s Scythe when it comes to repeated duels, so this gave you away a little bit for the rematches. I’d also suggest maintaining the stability for a bit longer so incoming CC’s get negated, as you’re going to want to be able to apply as much melee-range pressure as possible.
1) I don’t have spare gold for food/buffs lol. I have an expensive side hobby of creating many new toons and dressing them up to post on GW2 Style : http://gw2style.com/look.php?id=11063
2) TY for the great tips! I never even noticed that I almost always chained shroud 3 with shroud 5. I am definitely trying to vary my fighting style so as to be more unpredictable since we mostly fight the same few roamers in WvW. I’ve been doing the noob way of varying my looks instead of my fighting style so they don’t catch on and figure they are fighting the same person lol. But I should really learn to fight differently XD

talking about dire/condi, I wonder if that mesmer has enough condi clearance in his build?
Will a condi build take him out?
I’ve not tried it myself, but condi reaper is pretty OP if you ask me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
And seeing a pile of ectos drop would practically make your heart race lol.
I can’t stress this enough. I wish GW2 had drops that did this on a more frequent basis…I’m not asking for a lot…like once every 6 months?
I do get fake races though, like when look-alike precursor items drop but then you realize its not a precursor but a cheap version!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
Well…I’m definitely not a big WvW player and I haven’t played a ton as a necro, but here’s my thoughts, at least from watching your fights against the first thief:
It looks like your biggest mistakes in your first two fights were burning your shroud trying to close the gap instead of pressuring from range with staff/axe. Once you burned through your shroud, the thief jumped in and pressured.
It looks like you learned from that in your later fights for the most part, which is why your next two games were wins. You lost the last game because he switched his strategy and instead went for a hard burst at the start, which you weren’t expecting.
So basically, you’d want to be patient against a thief staying at range and focus more on building up shroud and when the thief pushes for a hard burst, dropping chill and using shroud to counter burst with shroud AoE.
Think of it this way: If a thief and necro at full health both go full DPS against each other and don’t use any defensive skills, the necro will win every time. However, if the same thing happens with a thief and necro at half health, the thief will likely win. Because of this, the thief will generally try to win the fight by resetting until you’re at low shroud + hp. Be patient at the start and save your shroud so that when they go for the burst, you can change what they expect to be a quick burst into a longer DPS match that you’ll overtake them on.
Anyways, that applies to dagger power thieves at least. Condi thieves are a whole other story and I can’t speak much towards staff thieves.
Thanks for the thoughts! Thats quite a new way of looking at a Reaper Daredevil matchup to me…I’ll try it out in my fights!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
Well, the game isn’t balanced around 1v1. Simple as that. Makes no sense either because it’s a MMORPG.
PU is strong if the following things come together:
- You got room to maneuver.
- You are fighting someone alone.
- They want to kill you.
The last is actually pretty important. A PU Mesmer is surprisingly toothless until you try to hurt them. Try to duel them, they kill you. Do anything else, like try to fight for points, win, do teamfights, anything, they are quite bad and their team will be missing one.
It’s basically a highwayman-trap-spec. You bait people who want to prey on solo runners into attacking you, then you kill them. Used to be the natural answer to the perma-stealthing thieves standing around enemy walls waiting to ambush players, as they’d often jump onto a Mesmer immediately.
Outside of that one use case, not really a point to it. And as 1v1 isn’t a combat format the game supports, also underpowered if anything (why is Mass Invis limited to 10 players? Mass Invisibility!).
True…but as a reaper its hard to outrun any other classes assuming I don’t want to kill them but they want to kill me XD
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
So PU is basically the only mechanic Mesmer has that allows us to do outnumbered fights. Since WvW solo roaming is basically 90% outnumbered fights, PU is obviously an important choice.
However, chrono provides our only access to a 25% movement speed passive. The importance of this in WvW roaming is also enormous. There’s no point running a build that lets you win fights if you can’t actually get to any fights.
The resolution is to run both. You can take chaos and get 2 useful major traits out of it that are not build-specific (manipulation cooldowns and PU). Chrono has a bunch of good options for any build. This then leaves you with 1 free traitline. Go illusions if you’re condie. Go inspiration if you’re with a group suddenly. Go domination if you’re looking for power burst, and go dueling if you’re power but want a bit more utility.
I haven’t personally fought this Mesmer you’re referring to, being on FA myself, but beating power mesmer is all about recognizing and responding to the burst before it hits you. Mesmer has no sustained damage, so you can easily fight back and put them on the defensive, but you have to avoid eating the burst in the first place. If you let the power Mesmer control the pacing of the fight and use their stealth aggressively, it will be difficult to win. If you put pressure on them and force defensive stealths, it allows you to control the pacing and land hits.
Thanks for the tips! I think I’ll need to really re-think my way of engaging mesmers/chronos.
I’ve been very passive mostly, dodging their bursts first then counter-bursting them.
Perhaps I should try to pressure them more and control the pacing like you said!

As a power Reaper roaming in WvW, I find it a lot tougher to fight PU mesmers (both condi and power versions) compared to chronomancers.
Are Base PU Mesmers still the King of Roaming?
Chronomancers don’t really come close to PU Mesmers in my experience…I fought a PU Mantra base Power Mesmer from FA EVO guild, i think his name is Andy or something, my record against him in like 50 fights is 50 losses. I won zero times. Zero! He is extremely skilled and I got no chance against him.
Against less skilled base Mesmers like those in my video below, I still find them much harder to fight compared to a Chronomancer =/I have also fought this particular mesmer maybe 300 or 400 times (though his name escapes me as well), and dueled him extensively in attempts to beat him after being constantly rejected while playing a breadth of classes, doing my best to run hard counters since he was PPT’ing our camps one day, and have repeatedly taken down his guildmembers outnumbered many, many times when he is not there. Every fight where he is involved, however, has pretty much been a strict loss without many others there to take down his passives from the Chaos traitline so I can get in and simply kill him. Alone, he’s similarly devastating. He plays full berserker and is next to impossible to kill without single-target damage that will one-shot him. I’d say I lose about 90% of the time on every class and build used against him. He is by far and large the best mesmer I’ve ever seen in the game, and plays an order of magnitude better than most I’ve seen stream in the ESL, including Helseth. He only runs one mantra, though, MoP.
I play a similar reaper build when I’m not on my thief, and a good chrono can easily shut us down with the amount of blocks and lockdown available to them. That said, there are very few actually good chronomancers, and PU/Chaos is absolutely the better roaming option since it has so many goodies meant for the small-scale, and it offers a ton in terms of defense like permanent protection uptime.
You can run Ins/Chaos/Chrono and also do very well, however. Though I’d argue chrono is a little better for larger encounters due to alacrity and the ability to reset important skills like veil.
You’re right about the one-shot way to defeat him.
I heard flamegun berserkers have beaten him. One shot kill from their rifles.
I also heard druids have beaten him. Out-range and out-heal his damage?
He isn’t running any reflects i believe…
I never actually seen it happen though lol…

Cool vid but I couldn’t watch more than half of it…
As a necro roamer and duelist I can’t stand the fact that at the start of every duel you are close to 100% deathshroud, I would never go above 20% when starting a duel vs someone, other than that its cool, don’t see many axe necros
I hear you. I guess our philosophy when it comes to shroud is different =p

They could at least make the occasional set of weapon skins that aren’t Black Lion skins and set them in game as a drop. I know those things are money for them, but an endless stream of same ole same ole doesn’t help the game.
This!
endless stream of same ole…
I need a skin…let me go grind a few runs of silverwastes or dragonstand…break all the loot, sell all the mats, a few weeks of grinding later, I’ll have enough gold to buy the skin. A few years of grinding later…I am still only getting items to break and sell the mats…but in the process I am still saving up enough gold to buy the items I want…I just don’t feel like it is any ‘wow’ factor…
Not rewarding.
No.
What I want is…
I need a skin…let me go kill a specific mob…solo content…a few weeks later…WOW the skin I am hunting for dropped from the mob!
or
I need a skin…let me go kill some mobs…solo content…a few weeks later…WOW I found an item worth 100+ gold! Now I can sell it or trade it for the skin I want!

Before you guys jump in to say again that if they drop more often, then they lose their value, then so be it! Introduce more loot after that that are valuable when the current batch of valuables lose their value!
Loot doesn’t need to remain valuable forever! they can be replaced with newer equally valuable items after they lose their value!
The important thing is to let PvE players feel the exhilaration from finding a VALUABLE item!

If valuable loot were to drop more frequently for you, it would in all likelihood have to drop more frequently in general. Such drops would then stop being quite so valuable.
We should remove loot all together, because it’ll eventually lose value.
0.o.
It’s a pretty lame criticism, because other more loot RPGs manage to achieve a higher balance between making the character feel rewarded from loot drops with the inevitability of characters grinding out the system.
But, that balance doesn’t even come close to existing in GW2. They have had the right item at some points with the introduction of standalone armor and weapons.
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/List_of_named_weapons
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/List_of_standalone_armor
But the items on this list are mostly acquired via…
- Gem Store (biggest culprit of them all)
- Previous Living World Seasons (N/A)
- Festival Events (N/A)
- Material Intense Crafting Recipes
- Mystic Forge Recipes (Either Material Intensive or Mystic Coin Intensive)
The remainder that do actually drop are isolated to specific areas and with a very, very very low drop chance. They aren’t part of the universal loot tables.
Just because the game has horizontal progression doesn’t mean that it can’t have rewarding loot. Unique named items and armor with an unique skin can be perceived as valuable for applying an unique look to your character. The cosmetic aspect of the game has always been cited as GW2’s reward system.
However, the aspect that they base their rewards on is also the aspect that they make money on, which is why the ratio of cosmetic skins being produced for the gem store exceeds what is produced in the game.
And loot is in a current state where it’s a bunch of garbage that piles up in your bags to salvage for crafting materials. Crafting materials, mind you, that now lack a lot of value, since they are no longer supporting legendary weapons.
The sad thing is they don’t have to make a ton of new skins if they wanted to overhaul the loot system. They already have a ton of available options in the lists in the two links I have provided that players just don’t get, because of how they have to be acquired.
If you took all the current named weapons and all the old unique armor items from the old Living Season rewards, repurposed them to drop universally, made them account bound so the skins cant be acquired off the trading post and altered their drop rates so it was probable for a player with average magic find to get one once every 3-4 days, you would add an element of looting of “Ahh, that’s cool” that wouldn’t be exhausted quickly just due to the volume of items that already exist.
So many cool weapon skins on that list that either have incredibly low drop rates and are targeted to very specific chests or bags or cost something like 50 mystic coins and 250 of a T6 material to make (which they aren’t that cool to spend that amount on).
Wasted potential.
^
THIS
SO MUCH THIS!
This poster above nailed it.
Loot has to be rewarding! I don’t feel rewarded grinding a few thousand hours for items that I break and sell the mats worth a few bronze or silver coins.
I feel rewarded when I find drops worth 100s or 1000s of gold!
This is where GW2 really disappointed me.
The rewarding loots drop so rarely!

(I won after a long fight. But it was so much harder to fight a Power PU Mesmer compared to a Power Chronomancer)
Apart from the video below, you can see other Chronomancer fights I had with my Reaper in my signature’s Roaming 1 and 2 videos. They are still not as tough as a PU base Mesmer =/

What would you change? What is valuable loot in your opinion? Do you want exotics and ascended chests for killing veterans? Or for what activities exactly do you want improved loot?
Be more or less specific
I’m referring to loot that is worth 100+ to 1000s of gold.
Like precursors etc.
I’ve played for 2+ years and only got 1 precursor drop.
Other then that 1 precursor, I have got no other drops that is worth more than 50 gold by itself.

Lack of valuable loot is really killing my interest in doing PvE.
Most games/game modes are the same. Kill monsters and gain loot.
Loot makes up a huge part of the game IMO.
I really need better and more valuable loot dropping =/
And dropping for solo play too. Not where I need to form teams for raids or join large groups to kill world bosses.
I really need solo play good loot drops.

THIS
SO MUCH THIS!

I find PvP very monotonous. I go in, hope to get into a better team than my opponents, spam my skills, and then hopefully I win.
Do you guys (for solo players, not team players who have team strategies etc.) really think over and revise your build and time your skills?
When there are 3vs3 or 2vs2 or outnumbered fights happening, its so chaotic the one thing you want to do is just spam skills…
Can we have 1vs1 King of the Hill official mode where skills actually matter for solo players?
At this rate, I still find solo roaming in WvW much more enjoyable despite the really bad drops.

very few people craft because equivalent or better items can be bought from the TP.
