I know classes aren’t balanced around 1vs1.
But who is the current 1vs1 King of the Hill?
Please separate old classes from new elite specs when ranking. My ranking:
1) Chronomancer (F5 + chain spam burst, reset by F5, repeat chain spam burst)
2) Druid (the healing sustain is real)
2) Scrapper (the healing sustain is real)
2) Revenant (the healing sustain is real)
5) Dragonhunter
5) Daredevil
7) Reaper
7) Berserker
9) Tempest (never seen one in a 1vs1 fight before…so not sure how they do)
10) The rest of the old classes. They don’t stand a chance against the elite specs.I really have to disagree with your rankings and this is based on my own 1 v 1 experiences in arena matches. I usually will go out of my way to 1 v 1 someone so I recognize the trigger effect and what to look out for per class.
My experience in 1 on1 place them at this ranking.
1) Reaper
2) Dragonhunter
3) Scrapper
4) Druid (close tie between the scrapper)
5) Chronomancer
6) Revnant
7) Tempest
8) Berzerker
9) Daredevil (close tie to berzerker)Some old builds are still viable, but yes elites do seem to have the upperhand.
Your rankings almost feel backwards……
1) Chronomancer is not as simple as you make it. It needs to be timed right for chain spam burst to even work, that is under the assumption the chronomancer isn’t cc’d.
1) Druid is highly sustainable; I cannot argue this one, but in order for them to be truly effective they must rely on their pets to output the damage needed. It would be the fight that never ends in a 1 v 1
2) Scrapper? There stealth is more effective than the heals to me. But 3 is a good spot for it.
2) Revenant does not belong this high at all. They have very low condi removal, and the healing is not that great. The reason they appear to heal very well is because people attack them when infused light is triggered. In a 1 v 1 this can be avoided. And for the love of god hit dodge if they use unrelentless. CCing them is a must since they have a lot of evades at their disposal
5) Dragonhunter being below rev is just amusing in of itself. I’d place them at #2. The amount of stuns and cc damage DH can produce is insane. You put in Rune of Trapper and you can apply a trap in stealth, triggering a stun/cc just to reapply it. By the time you get yourself up you could already have a finisher driven through you.
5) I feel for the poor daredevil. Their damage output is insane, but they are as squishy as squishy as can be. So as far as a 1 v 1 goes I’d almost place them last.
7) Reaper being at #7 comes off like a bad joke. It is easily #1.
- They have sustainability with Reaper’s Shroud (unless you can moa them)
- Endless amounts of conditions to apply
- Boon stripping
- So much chill that even Santa goes on vacation on Christmas.
I would much rather face a chronomancer then a reaper.7) Berzerker doesn’t scare me much at least not anymore. The damage output is immense when they trigger rampapage, but dodging those could result in life or death
8) Tempest is still very tanky and maybe its the way I play now, but their damage output doesn’t seem to harsh. It is getting them to sit still for a second to burst them that can be painful. But the tankiness is why I placed them at 7.
Very well written reply. Thank you.
Also I wouldn’t disagree with any of your points.
Except for the Reaper.
Just bring a diamond skin ele or tempest and you have a dead condi reaper. even a power reaper will struggle.

20% life force is the standardized rule for duels.
Last I heard it was 30-50% for HoT.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/pvp/Starting-Lifeforce-needs-to-be-reviewed/first#post5734775
But anyway, I’m more curious to know if Chaos or Holts won.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
Considering Druids start with full Celestial Force during PvP matches, it hardly seems fair for a Necromancer to start with 0 Life Force.
true this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
You are right about Chronomancer and Druid being good at that for a while… but since they produce no damage, they are doomed at the long term when their skills get in CD. DH plays in a different league than the other classes and eventually will destroy them.
are you talking about normal 5v5 pvp or 1v1?
i see chronos winning dh quite often in 1v1.

so…who won?
Chaos or Holts?

Elite Item Used: Reaper’s Greatsword (temporary until I finish Dark harvest)

I might need to figure out how to take higher res screen grabs.
wow great setting for your reaper!

Take herald down a few hundred notches, please.
If you, for whatever reason, block their UA (which you have no excuse avoiding in a pure 1v1 setting), that’s all their burst. They’ve got access to approx 13.8k healing on demand across their two legends and two weapon sets which means very little with all the DPS flying around (1.5 unloads from my thief). Infuse light can be considered a block since you have no business attacking them once they pop this.
Honestly, I see these guys as more mobile medi guards with 0 condi cleanse, but medi guard is capable of more burst, a better ranged weapon, and slightly less telegraph to skills.
um no UA is not the only burst a rev has.

i added some videos for each of the posted warrior and mesmer builds so far to show their common rotations.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
I kinda modified it to what might be better but it’s just my opinion.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vRUQNAndWjc0Q5N2ZD22A7NOqFK6bMHlBMBCgGIG2/bJA-TFCFAByt/AAnCgCV/5KlgIp8IJlYppPYhnAQAAEgdGduzAH9oH9oH9odzduzje0jGA-w
The concept behind my build is, full berserker armor/weapon/trinkets + fully defensive traits/utilities. Many stunbreaks, many condition tranfers, more dodges.
That said, I think your build is more focused offensively and not so much the attack+defense combination I had in mind.
Not that your build is bad, in fact I think your build has great synergy with heavy boon removals pairing with axe and focus combi.
But I feel some fights, necros don’t have the initiative and often have to survive a burst or two, which my build may be more capable of surviving.
I tried running with focus, but focus 4 was too unreliable and doesn’t bounce well, requiring me to set it up with a fear, which may not be worth it (or maybe I’m casting it wrongly)
focus 5 cast time was too long…
I prefer dagger because of the condi transfer/blind.
dagger 5 not so useful though but still passable with the weakness application.
I dropped path of corruption because I decided to run with corrupt boon. with master of corruption traited, that is a pretty decent boon corruption ability already without POC. and master of corruption allows me to have a faster heal too.
I thought of running spite line too, but since I decided not to go with focus, and i thought axe cooldown was decently fast already, i went death magic for more defense.
I went plague form because it is more defensive and gives more survivability against things like rampage and to tank possible bursts when caught out with shroud on cooldown.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
Just a question, but what are you trying to achieve with your build?
I wanted a jack of all trades build that can have a fair chance against most if not all other classes in a 1vs1 while roaming in WvW.
Citing an extreme example, I don’t want to run a heavy condi build that has zero chance against a diamond skin elementalist.
I understand though that it is not very possible to have a build that is 50-50 chance against every other classes’ builds. there will be fights favoring my build and fights that favor the enemy’s build.
But I don’t want a build that has zero chance against another particular build like condi vs diamond skin.
I’m trying to find a build that has at least a 30% chance of winning against any other builds. That is, even if I meet the worst counter to my build, it is still a 30% chance I can win.

Current status: Struggling against druids and scrappers. Their healing and sustain is insane.
Necro, not Reaper.
I tried Reaper and don’t like it.
Too melee and too kiteable against other classes in WvW.
TLDR: I’m sharing my 1 year roaming experience against other classes for what its worth. Also I’ll expand on this as I fight more against the new elite specializatoins.
I’ll also post videos to show.
Naturally, my sharing will be based on the build I’m using. But it can still be useful to take points off and adapt it into your builds.
Current Build (still fine-tuning as I face off against the new elite specs)

Vs Power Warrior
General tips:
- Plague form + blind to negate their Rampage
- Watch out for their Immune to condi stance so you don’t waste your fear
- Watch out for their stability icon and use corrupt boon on them
- If they run to widen the gap for more healing time and cooldown and show signs of wanting to drain your lifeforce before committing, don’t be afraid to run in the opposite direction, disengage by entering towers/keeps or just teleporting away.
- I mean, hey, if you can run first away from me, so can I. I don’t have to chase after you or wait there for you to come back. Right?
- Skull-crack build
- Commonly uses Mace/Shield + Greatsword
- Combos include:
- Using Greatsword rush to get close, whirlwind to damage and evade, switching to blocking with shield as they get close, before shield bash followed by Mace skull-crack burst stun, then switching to greatsword to hundred blades and then whirlwind out.
Video: https://youtu.be/k0LO8SZVw3k
- Using Greatsword rush to get close, whirlwind to damage and evade, switching to blocking with shield as they get close, before shield bash followed by Mace skull-crack burst stun, then switching to greatsword to hundred blades and then whirlwind out.
- How to fight:
- Use dodges to evade Greatsword rush and whirlwind.
- Use Shroud to breakstun if you get caught by shield bash. The subsequent stability pulse will negate the skull-crack that usually follows.
- Thoughts:
Build variations include Mace/Shield + Hammer.
With 2 utility stun breaks and shroud stun break + stability, we should have a fairly even chance against them.
- Eviscerate build
- Commonly uses Axe/Shield + Greatsword
- Combos include:
- Using Greatsword rush to get close, whirlwind to damage and evade, switching to blocking with shield as they get close, before shield bash followed by Eviscerate.
Video: https://youtu.be/OZMKlopXwJA
- Using Greatsword rush to get close, whirlwind to damage and evade, switching to blocking with shield as they get close, before shield bash followed by Eviscerate.
- How to fight:
- Use dodges to evade Greatsword rush and whirlwind.
- Use Shroud to breakstun if you get caught by shield bash. Eviscerate usually follows right after the stun so you may want to save a dodge for immediately after you breakstun.
- Thoughts:
Their killer moves generally involves shield bash + eviscerate.
Repeat this mantra: breakstun + dodge, breakstun + dodge, breakstun + dodge.
With decent enough reaction and internet connection to execute the mantra above, we should have a fairly even chance against them.
- Rifle build
- Commonly uses Rifle + Greatsword
- Combos include:
- Using Rifle autos and volley to engage, then rifle kill-shot burst, then switch to greatsword to open up the gap, switch back to rifle and repeat.
Video: https://youtu.be/nP0578-r5_k
- Using Rifle autos and volley to engage, then rifle kill-shot burst, then switch to greatsword to open up the gap, switch back to rifle and repeat.
- How to fight:
- Use your dodge for kill-shot and volley.
- Use shroud to tank and trade hits with him.
- Rarely a warrior will use Greatsword rush to get close. They use it to kite. So don’t need to save dodge for this.
- Thoughts:
Their rifle autos and volleys hurt. So don’t be stingy on using shroud to tank. But no matter what you do, dodge their kill-shot and we should have a fairly even chance against them.
- Sword build
- Commonly uses Sword/Shield + Greatsword or Hammer
- Combos include:
- Using sword to leap to you, followed by shield bash, sword flurry burst to immobilize you, switch to greatsword to hundred blade you or auto with sword, then switch to hammer to stun you, then switch back to sword to final thrust you.
Video: https://youtu.be/yc6hekuIvAc
- Using sword to leap to you, followed by shield bash, sword flurry burst to immobilize you, switch to greatsword to hundred blade you or auto with sword, then switch to hammer to stun you, then switch back to sword to final thrust you.
- How to fight:
- Dodge his shield bash. Very important. His combos usually depend on shield bash landing.
- Use shroud to breakstun, remove immobilize.
- Thoughts:
With our many stun breaks and remove condi in shroud, we should have a fairly even chance against them.
- Hammer build
- Commonly uses Hammer + Greatsword
- Combos include:
- Using Greatsword rush to get close, whirlwind to damage and evade, switching to hammer staggering blow which is almost instant knockdown with no tell-tale animation, hammer burst and hammer 5.
Video: https://youtu.be/DKagEb-W4Jk
- Using Greatsword rush to get close, whirlwind to damage and evade, switching to hammer staggering blow which is almost instant knockdown with no tell-tale animation, hammer burst and hammer 5.
- How to fight:
- Use dodges to evade Greatsword rush and whirlwind.
- Save a dodge for his hammer burst which is very obvious jumping animation.
- Use your shroud to breakstun and stability to tank his stuns.
- Thoughts:
With our many stun breaks, we should have a fairly even chance against them.
- Longbow build
- Commonly uses Longbow + Greatsword or Hammer
- Combos include:
- Using Longbow 5 to immobilize you, longbow burst and longbow 3 to nuke.
Video: https://youtu.be/sKrHUGQlC9s
- Using Longbow 5 to immobilize you, longbow burst and longbow 3 to nuke.
- How to fight:
- Don’t stand in the fire circles. Dodge out of them when you see longbow 3.
- Save your shroud for the hammer stuns
- Thoughts:
I’ve never fought a Longbow power build while roaming, though I have seen one in action.
Vs Mesmer
General tips:
- Stand on your staff mark when the mesmer is invis. Gives yourself more reaction time. And so they don’t burst out of invis at point-blank range.
- Some mesmers like to invis and blink behind you and burst from behind. So you need a good 360 awareness and reaction and internet connection when their bursts come out of invis.
- Mesmers can come out of invis with aegis so don’t be too quick to burst them. Try a couple of autos, bait out their dodges etc.
- Shatter burst build
- Commonly uses Greatsword + Sword/Torch
- Combos include:
- Greatsword 4 then Greatsword 2 + Blink to you + Mind Wrack + Greatsword 3 + Greatsword 5
- Greatsword 4 then Greatsword 2 then switch to Sword/Torch then Sword 3 to immobilize and blink to you then Sword 2 + Mind Wrack
Video: https://youtu.be/bDVXL425UsQ
- How to fight:
- Greatsword 4 may not need to be dodged. Run straight and you might be able to minimize damage.
- Greatsword 2 must dodge because it generates clones and can usually lead to bursts.
- Sword 3 must dodge because it generally leads to bursts as well. If you failed to dodge, use shroud to tank or use staff 4 which usually removes the immobilize from you and with enough luck with crits, can kill off the clones that are usually running towards you because of shatter.
- Save your fear to interrupt his mantra/heal/mass invis or use it to interrupt his rhythm.
- Most mesmers like to dodge once their Sword 2 evades end so don’t be too quick to try landing a burst.
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_JCOcM8LqI
- Thoughts:
Mesmers that run either power lock + power return or power spike + power return traited for 3 uses are extremely painful.
Some mesmers time their power lock with their burst so you’ll need fast reaction to stun break and dodge. Usually if you’re not focused and prepared, you end up wanting to dodge but finding yourself stunned and by the time you stun break, you find yourself too late to dodge and the burst had landed.
If you’re able to react fast with decent internet connection, you should have a fairly even chance against them.
Vs Ranger
General tips:
- Save your dodge for rapid fire. The rest of the longbow skills are not easy to dodge.
- Longbow build
Vs Guardian
Vs Elementalist
Vs Revenant
Vs Engineer
Vs Thief
Vs Necromancer

With all the new elite specs and changes, what are your thoughts on the necro/reaper’s starting lifeforce?
There are three areas I would like feedback on.
1) Standard PvP maps (the old version)
2) New PvP maps (the new version where you kill the Lord)
3) 1vs1 duels
What lifeforce should a necro be allowed to start with, if any?
Should it still remain at zero as per pre-HoT?
my thoughts:
1) start with 20% lifeforce
2) start with 10% lifeforce
3) start with 50% lifeforce

I ran mainly condi/hybrid nec too in WvW until I dropped from Tier 1 to Tier 2.
90% of the eles roaming in Tier 2 are Celestial/Dire Diamond skin Eles.
condi necs got zero chance against them.
hybrid necs got a small chance.
still, if you don’t mind the occasional helplessness against a diamond skin ele, condi necro is a very good choice for WvW solo roaming. especially with the new scepter changes.

I think i know what is causing this mentality of pack roamers chasing half the map to kill a solo roamer.
I don’t experience this much in T1, but since coming to T2, it became very evident.
Pack roamers (2 or more players) will do their best to chase down an enemy solo roamer. sometimes going half the map just to do it.
Why? where is the challenge to pounce on an enemy with more numbers? is it fun?
I always justified it as “they are defending their homeworld. doesn’t matter if i am alone and they have 8. to them, i need to die”.
i finally figured it out after experiencing it myself.
it was the scarcity of meeting enemy roamers in T2 that resulted in this bloodlust the moment they see an enemy. they just want some action.
you could roam for 3-4 hours and maybe meet one or two evenly numbered encounters. and that is considered a lucky day.
so in the end, to these packs, any enemy is fair game. any enemy means action, it means some fun. even if it is not challenging.

I’m suggesting to add different stats and tiers for all level 80 armor.
so that we have perfect roled stats and not-so perfect rolled stats.
so the higher rolled stats will be worth a lot of money and there will be a lot more variety and need to farm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
i liken the necro old scepter to a warrior sword.
A necro old scepter FOC does a lot of burst damage when used at the right time.
same as a warrior sword’s skill 3 Final Thrust.
the warrior sword works well as both a condi weapon and a power weapon or a hybrid weapon depending on how you use it.
i hope scepter returns to being a condi or power or hybrid possible weapon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
I run a power scepter build and losing the additional damage per condition is just…dots…
I used to be able to crit 4-5k damage after Signet of spiting the enemy with FOC but now…I’ll be lucky with…I don’t know…2k damage?
the additional torment stacks got nothing to do with me.
please bring back the old scepter 3 Feast of corruption that gives 8% additional damage per condition
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
the consistency of good drops really need to be improved. not those drops that sell for 1000s of gold, but just those 10 gold 20 gold 100 gold drops.
i cite an example. i played runescape for 10 over years. my favorite activity was grinding at dragon spawns to:
1) increase my attack exp. yes my level is 99 attack capped. but my exp total can go up to 200million exp which is 10+ times the exp needed to get to 99. So I grind and grind and love it. and there is a ranking board online that shows everyone my exp.
2) I love grinding at dragon spawns because they have a top level 20million gold drop called dragon visage. in 10+ years of playing, I’ve only gotten this drop twice. twice in 10+ years. but I still love it because there are still other semi-top drops that drops more consistently and helps build up my wealth as well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
I’m suggesting to add different stats and tiers for all level 80 armor.
so that we have perfect roled stats and not-so perfect rolled stats.
so the higher rolled stats will be worth a lot of money and there will be a lot more variety and need to farm. and the perfect rolled stats will be worth billions of gold.
Do you find PvE tiring and lacking in challenge? Do you feel the drop-rates could be better? I personally do not really like the PvE mode in this game because I find the ‘treasure hunting’ aspect of the game very lacklustre. The chances of finding decent/good drops that sells for a hefty pile of gold is very low.
I used to PvE lots because of the grinding (yes i love to grind and watch my levels grow but this game caps my level at 80) and the loot (yes i love to get great drops that sell for lots of gold but this game’s great loot is extremely rare and it might take me years before I get that ‘my gosh i just found a great item!’ feeling).
So i moved away from PvE and entered the world of roaming.
If you are looking for a challenge, I hope this video inspires you to try out roaming!
