Recently I wrote a post here on how condi players can fight against a necro’s transfers.

In there, I focused mainly on how a condi mesmer can overcome a Necro’s ability to transfer condis back. But not just a mesmer, many other classes running condi can, with their own skills, not have to feel powerless when they face a necro. (Necros are not OP against condi builds if you know what to expect and what to do).

Now I want to help not just necros, but also other classes, figure out a Power Shatter Mesmer.

There are in general two main things you want to defend against:
1) Burst rotation from Greatsword skill 2 + Shatter (somtimes with blink + mantra of stun)
2) Burst rotation from Sword skill 3 + skill 2 + Shatter (sometimes with mantra of stun)

And they like to bait dodges/defenses before doing the real shatter burst. It could come from GS or Sword. So don’t let your guard down.

The most terrible and hardest to dodge is imo the burst from stealth at point-blank-range. Especially if you don’t have a very good connection or reflexes. One point-blank-range burst will just destroy you if you are glass. Not impossible to evade, but you really need to be extremely focused to get out of this if you don’t have any means to pre-warn it like a necro laying down a staff mark.

Howdy parner. I think it would have been more useful if you referenced an ele instead of Mesmer because Mesmers have always done well 1v1. Cele signet necro is a threat to d/d eles atm.

I play a variety of Mesmer and necro builds and power necros are anything but passive. At the beginning of each match, I think it is the weakest possible build available due to its dependency on LF.

hey i think thats great that you don’t have much problems with necros.
but from the many posts calling necros too OP against condi builds, I think many other players will find these tips very useful when fighting a necro and will no longer think that a necro is OP against a condi build.

by passive, apart from using shroud to tank power/condi bursts, i also mean that we don’t pro-actively dodge condi bursts because we think that we can transfer it back easily and many don’t even know what to look-out for because most of the time, they don’t need to know how an enemy condi burst looks like.
They only know: “I have a lot of condi on me, I need to transfer it back”

Yes necros only have 2 dodges, but that doesn’t mean we should eat bursts!
the idea here is to use our 2 dodges to evade the bursts.
Especially against condi because hey what if the enemy knows how to prevent a transfer? dodging their bursts twice early will set the enemy back quite a bit.

This is for 1 vs 1 mode.

Necro gameplay has been too passive.
Whether it is versus power or condi enemies, the answer for many players is to sit and deathshroud to tank and soak up the damage. Yes we only have 2 dodges but those 2 are there for a reason.

The worst offender is against condi enemies because necros have so many means of transferring the condi, they don’t actually pro-actively attempt to dodge condi bursts. They just soak up on the condi and then transfer it back to the enemy.

And USUALLY, you have a dead enemy. And then the community complains that Necro is too OP against condi builds. (But then they forget about Diamond Skin Eles).

But what if one day, the enemy actually knows how to prevent a necro from transferring the condi back to him? What if one day, a necro finds most of his condi transfers missing or failing?

I hope to see that day come. I hope to see the day when necros actually seek to learn and dodge bursts, condi or power. I hope to see the day when necros don’t sit in shroud thinking it is sufficient. I hope to see the day when necros don’t blindly soak up on the condi bursts thinking a simple transfer is going to work.

So here I bring up to the community, the ways to fight a necro using condi.

I think I am very well-placed to explain condi transfers since I use all the available transfers a necro has in my build. I’ll even teach you how to counter. All these are my own experiences as well as the knowledge that the Necro community has shared with me. I think there may be some errors here and there so feel free to correct me!

• 1) plague sending / Trait
  -when there are 3 condis on the necro, next crit by the necro on the opponent transfers 5 condis
  -blind and block only effective to delay the crit from happening, does not stop the transfer once crit happens cause it is instant
  -How to counter: Don’t instantly condi burst him. hit him with 3 or more different condis, then when you see a signet break above his head, you probably triggered his plague sending. Load him after that. This trait also works on the nearest enemy, not on the targeted enemy. So if you have images, clones, pets, minions, summons etc, try not to be the one closest to the Necro.

• 2) Deathly Swarm / dagger 4
  -900 range dagger skill that travels and appears as a thin dark-green swarm
  -can be dodged or blocked,
  -cannot be blinded as it will transfer the blind back? not sure about this because I don’t remember missing it before
  -transfers 3 condi when it connects
  -How to counter: if you have loaded him with condi, watch for a dark-green-black swarm thing that travels out from the necro. it moves relatively slowly and can be dodged or blocked. Don’t let it hit you if you don’t want to eat all your own condi damage.

• 3) Plague Signet / Utility
  -Instant cast stun breaker. Very OP against condi foes. transfers up to 5 condis back.
  -Can be dodged or blocked
  -Cannot be blinded? (if you loaded him with 6 or more condis, chance a Necro will miss?)
  -How to counter: you can see this icon in the necro status bar as a signet icon. if you see it, and you are condi, load him up with condi but right after that, dodge, block, invulnerable, invis, blink away. Do anything you can right after you load him with condi to prevent his plague signet from hitting you. It is instant cast so you have to pre-empt this transfer. the longer he takes to transfer it back to you, the more damage the necro takes. This is like pre-empting an invisible foe, where you need to count his stealth timing and dodge or block or evade etc. Same thing for a necro, because it is instant cast, most necros when they are loaded with condis they will want to activate this to transfer it back. Don’t let them do it easily. Pre-empt them with all your evasive skills. If you do that, there is a very good chance that they will miss the cast or take too long to transfer it and by then they will be almost dead.

• 4) Putrid Mark / Staff 4
  -1200 range aoe mark. Casting animation is the same as all the marks so you can’t really tell whether he is casting this or some other mark
  - Can be evaded/dodged
  - Might be able to block unless the Necro traited unblockable marks
  - Cannot be blinded
  - Transfers 3 condis back on hit
  - How to counter: Same as plague signet, since you can’t tell whether he is casting this mark or some other mark, you have to pre-empt him. Load him with condis and pre-empt him by doing all your evasive/invis/dodge/blink/invulnerable skills so that he can’t transfer it back to you.

• 5) There is still the traited minions transfer on hit I think but I don’t really play with minions much…

Class Example : Mesmer

• You can use your images to block dagger 4 from hitting you.
• You can use your images to eat the plague sending because there is a good chance the crit from the necro will land on your image. Just make sure you are not the closest to the Necro.
• Load the necro and go invis and stay there as long as you can.
• Interrupt the necro if he tries to heal.
• If necro transfers the condi on to one of your image, then pop right out of invis and load him again. then go back into invis.
• Even better if you come out of invis with aegis. After your aegis breaks, try to dodge or chain dodges.
• Use your blink to widen the gap so the necro becomes harder to transfer it back to you.
• Use your sword evasive skill to pre-empt any transfers.
• Use f4 invulnerable shatter skill to defend yourself against transfers.

Mesmers have many pre-empt skills against a necro.
Having said that, it can still be a very close fight though, especially if you don’t have condi cleanses yourself.
One good transfer and fear from the necro = a dead mesmer.
if you are condi PU and you run condi cleansing mantra as well, then the necro will have a much harder time since he needs to catch you with a good transfer/burst at least twice.

For other classes, just do whatever you can to pre-empt and prevent the necro from transferring back to you and you have a dead necro.
For example, a condi engineer running MOA, after loading the necro with condis like burn, MOA the necro. You have a very dead necro.
For example, a condi ranger, use your shortbow to evade, use your sword/dagger to evade, use your dodges, use your pets to taunt/control the necro. You have a very dead necro.
Important thing is to pre-empt after you load the necro because very often, reacting is too late.

TLDR: if you are condi and fighting a necro, after you load him with condi, you need to pre-empt him by using all your evasive/defensive/control skills so that he can’t transfer it back to you successfully.

Death = losing the character and all the items on him (have a separate bank for hardcore characters)

Hardcore characters :
cannot trade/send things with Softcore characters
cannot use the Trading Post
cannot go WvW
cannot go PvP

Give us a Hardcore level ranking list for top hardcore ranked players

maybe I can add some tips:

1)Do not use your Shroud fear and Staff fear while he is still above 90% HP.

2)Be ALWAYS ready to fear him the moment he drops below 90% HP and you see condis appearing on him. I cannot stress this enough. This is the make or break moment. Fear him to prevent him from healing back up above 90% and then start loading and bursting him with everything you got.

3)Use your shroud lifeblast and shroud 4 to bring him below 90% and break his Diamond Skin. Scepter auto is NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Staff auto is possible but harder to full off an instant fear once he drops below 90% and also mostly he is in your face and hard for your auto to always hit.

4)Use your locust signet when you see protection boon on him. this is also very important. You must try to strip his protection boon. But this is really luck because usually they have a lot of boons and you can only strip 2…

5)Use your plague signet to transfer burns back on him whether or not he is below 90% HP…don’t let those burns tick =/

6)Eat Koi Cake to trick him =)

WvW only.

I was previously running a hybrid build with around 2.1k power, 40% crit chance, 170% crit damage and 1200 condi damage.

Before the triple trait update, it was enough to fight against a diamond skin ele. Now, it isn’t nearly enough against a good one that has high protection up-time and manages his health well. Especially those cele or dire DS eles. Not sure what other traits they run. Water?

I recently fought 5 different DS eles in the span of 2 weeks. All in Tier 2.

Seems like it is quite a popular build now. cele/dire DS eles. Extremely tough, almost impossible for a full condi enemy to win. Puts up a good fight against full power builds too because of all the boons and sustain and relatively high HP/Armor. Also very good burning and physical damage.

I got tired of losing to one on my hybrid build. So I made it more power…XD
Here is a good powerish-hybrid build that uses…a SCEPTER. not a new concept, but I can attest that it is also very effective. And yes I can kill DS eles on this build…=D

I’m not sure if replacing the scepter with a dagger for a pure power build will make it better…but I find it more comfortable fighting with a scepter even on a powerish build.

I’m just saying that if player were to use LoS to avoid the passive proc, it should work. If blocking an unblockable mark is the only way to avoid it then there’s a problem.

Except that LoS would normally be preventing the Necro from critting you in the first place.

I’m in TC and recently had the honor to roam in T2 against YB and SOS and FA.

I realized that there are a lot more Diamond Skin Ele roamers in T2. T1 I very rarely fought Diamond Skin Ele.

But in the 2 weeks of T2 roaming, I have fought against 4 different Diamond Skin Ele players.

Why does T2 have that many DS eles?
Is it because the condi meta is a lot more prevalent in T2?

These DS eles are also seemingly running condi builds.
Which I feel seems very effective. They cancel out condi builds totally and dish out condi of their own, while remaining tanky behind dire gear.
A very effective and strong build imo. Good condi damage, good tankiness against burst, extremely good defense against condi.

Also is the latest patch DS eles with triple trait lines to choose from too overpowered?
I think they can easily maintain above 90% HP against any build that isn’t heavily or purely physical damage.
Even Hybrid builds with 2k+ power and 1k+ condi will have a very hard time breaking their diamond skin I feel.

That is why I feel Condi dire/celestial diamond skin eles are so strong.

I’m not asking for them to be nerfed though. every class has its pros and cons. But I feel this is one build that should become meta because it is so well-rounded.

I have 8 level 80 classes.

All of them leveled either through champ trains, karma eotm trains, karma WvW trains, PVP level scrolls.
All of them bought and lived off the trading post.

Not a single one of them really explored and lived off the world like a real MMO toon.

But that will no longer continue!

I just created a asura lady engineer and I will explore the world of Tyria with her, she will level up as she journeys across the vast world, and live off all the items and loot that she finds in the world!

She will not join any mindless trains to level up.

She will not use the TP to buy any item. She will trade all her loot to NPC if she doesn’t need them. Even precursors!

I will finally get to enjoy the beauty of the world as it is. and not rush through it like a mindless critter rushing for level 80.

I will take my time and enjoy the sights and wonders of GW2.

I hold the same philosophy.
But sometimes we need to outsmart the enemy. like if they outnumber us, we need to pretend like ‘honorable’ duelers and not interrupt their ‘friendly’ duels.

then if our zerg passes by…that is a different story.

I think many of us who frequent WvW would have come across duels happening around the map.

Many duelers will say no interrupting because it is not an honorable thing to do.

But…they are enemies!

what are the situations when you will consider interrupting a duel?

Usually I will interrupt if:

1) they are dueling alone and the enemy is low life then I will help to burst and kill the enemy.

Usually I won’t interrupt if:

1) there are other enemies watching who might attack me if I interrupt.

As a Ghost Thief player reading this Thread

PU Mesmer loses to almost every heavy condition build from a Thief. Ghost Thief is also really good at it because they never see you so they can’t prep invis or a teleport. The only way a PU mesmer can survive is if they teleport away very quickly before I can place my 2nd Needle Trap. However, I’ve seen Shatter mesmers die from just a Steal and the 1st Needle Trap. Whether they’re spamming spells when they panic stealth or something… I dunno.

At the end of the day, if you’re being harassed by a Ghost Thief, drop a reveal trap on the floor and stand on it. Ghost Thief with no stealth is really crippling to us. If you don’t reveal us, we’ll follow you until you die or escape into a tower. Simply Steathing away doesn’t work because of the animation effects you make when you go invis are still visible when you’re invis… Kinda like how you can see and hear Infiltrators Arrow from an invis Thief. Also works with Shadow Shot, you can hear and see that too…

Anyway, I digress. It’s a pretty OP build but it certainly has its counters. The only way to Nerf it is to make certain abilities reveal you, like the Caltrops. You can’t make all conditions reveal you or else every Thief Build gets kittened ’cause you apply poison with your Auto swing chain… Kinda kittens over power builds like d/p or d/d.

The Traps themselves shouldn’t reveal… Trapper runes then become useless.

Right now, our biggest problem is Rangers. That kittenin’ AOE taunt, man. Still gets us when we’re invisible >_>. It’s gotten me killed 8 times. I’m counting.

i suddenly feel a strong need to bring reveal stealth traps…and that feels so wrong…why should i have to bring an external tool to fight??

I just found out there are perma stealth trapper thieves.

If you think PU mesmer stealth is terrible, think again.

PU stealth mesmers are fine. We still appear once every few moments.

What needs a nerf if anything, is a perma stealth trapper thief that loads you with condi and never exits stealth.

I recently fought 2 perma stealth thieves in WvW using condi traps with trapper runes and learned that there is a perma stealth trapper build:

i was about to post and say i just fought two thieves who ran perma stealth trapper…
its so crazy!

almost impossible to kill them!

I say almost because the thief messed up and i caught him with his pants down.

and then later killed the same thief when he snuck into our open tower and was perma-stealth trying to kill people in the tower and we caught him with…

i always thought that wvw bought items were restricted from being resold in the TP or being salvageable or mystic forged because anet didnt want wvw items from flooding the market and destroying the market.
but isnt silver waste farming already doing this? 100 gold average an hour? comparable to speed dungeon runs i believe
will allowing wvw armor to flood the market really make things worse than silver waste farming? why so much benefits in pve and pvp but so much restrictions in wvw?

The DPS isn’t too bad because of the high rate of fire. People play it with air/fire to get more damage out of it.

that was what I felt too. a shortbow seems to shoot faster on autos than a longbow?
also shortbow has double evade if you trait the quickdraw. pair that with dodges and evades on sword/dagger, you have a lot of evades that still do damage at the same time.

in terms of short term quick burst, a longbow is stronger. but shortbow gives a lot more survivability and sustained continuous damage i feel.

I never linked shortbow with zerk so I was quite surprised when I saw it.

and yes I’m very sure he was using D/P. He was using pistol 5 and heartseeker within the circle and did 4 heartseekers in the circle to stealth.

and he just walked up to the enemy and trap trap trap and the enemy just took condi overload =/

and he used S/D to chase and do some twirling attacks
