I’d like to see masteries against particular classes.. scaling the same way as “guard killer” and “defence against guards” scales , except both of them rolled into 1 mastery.
For example, Guardian mastery:
1. +1% damage against guardians and -1% damage from guardians
2. +2% damage against guardians and -2% damage from guardians
Thieves would suddenly find they do less damage to A LOT of players and die MUCH faster. :P
Gandara
A fully upgraded tower should not fall in less than a minute to a zerg. Sure it should fall fast, but with the mass heals and damage a zerg brings, it already makes it extremely difficult to defend against WITH siege.
When you are downed in seconds while on an arrow cart that is as far back from the outer wall edge as possible, the idea of defense becomes moot.
I agree that zergs are favored and approved of in WvW, but when the mentality exists of “Bring Zerg or GTFO”, then I feel the strong stay strong and the weak just keep losing. Because of that, we have servers who are perma-Outmanned and servers with 5 hour queues.
Gandara
Currently in the Edge of the Mists testing area, there are only 2 waypoints available (your main keep, and your spawn/safe zone)
They are not upgrades, they come standard with the areas, and the only way of gaining more waypoints is to capture an area with one (enemy keeps)
I like this idea to the extent that they would come standard with the structure. As pointed out, the WP’s benefit strong servers and allow them to keep pressure on the other servers more easily. A contested Keep in EBG can easily cost you a tower if your zerg is on the other side of the map and the run from your spawn takes too long (think 4x Superior rams or golem rush).
On the other hand, giving instant access to the Way Point seems a bit too much. I’d suggest a cool down where the Way Point auto-builds or becomes accessible only after the Lord’s buff is gone, which would help temper the momentum of the new owners a bit and give time for a counter before a zerg can map in as soon as it’s captured.
Gandara
No checklist for something as basic as a party wipe?
Also, if you try the relog trick, it doesn’t let you get to the reward chest after the last boss. Until they fix it, save a res orb for that.
Gandara
I think Anet would prefer you play PvE while in the queue so it’s in their interest to not implement any of these (IMO very useful) suggestions.
I still play PvE when I wait in queue, but my guildies aren’t thrilled when I tell them that, mid-dungeon, my queue popped and I’m leaving. In my opinion it has the opposite effect; why start PvE’ing when I have no clue when I’ll get in WvW.
+1 to OP’s suggestion as I can’t wait and watch TV, read, or do chores, without possibly missing my silent queue pop up.
Gandara
How about just showing me where I am at in the queue so I sense of when to wait 5 minutes in LA or run a fractal or two? (the game knows in the back-end, why not push it out to the player???)
Gandara
Started getting really bad lag on Gandara, lasted for 20 minutes, and now can’t log in.

Thanks for the explanation, Bill, it was great to read, and I look forward to the upcoming fixes. I book marked the GDC video so I can watch it.
Ugh, I really want to come up to Bellevue and see what you guys are doing. It’s frustrating as a developer to sit by and hope someone else figures it out. I’m sure I’m not alone here on that feeling. So get your NDAs printed up and ready to be signed.
As a developer or creator of original content, you must be aware that there are many ways to approach or code a feature or fix a problem. Working in a similar field, I know how easy it is to [peer] review a product and suggest an improvement that the original content developer did not think of. If Anet brought in 10, 20, 50, or 100 more developers you’d have that much more creativity and knowledge to apply to your product and improve or speed up the product (i.e. SETI@home or graphics render farms).
But there is a limit, based on funding, space, simultaneous development, etc, to how many coders or people can be applied to development. Like most products that are in constant development, there are production phases or iterations, where you spiral the development and come and revisit your initial or follow up implementation of a feature to re-evaluate or improve/fix what you are looking at.
The skill priority implementation is one aspect that is being reevaluated, as quoted by Bill above (i.e. seemed good at the time, after a second look, maybe not the best way). At first blush, it seems easy to say that all you need is an afternoon to see how things are done, and (possibly) assume you can gen up a better way. But 99 times out of 100, it’s not that easy.
Just continue giving feedback as the devs are obviously engaged with the community and listening (even if it doesn’t always seem that way).

Maybe he is talking about the BL JP’s with the Mistwrought keys to unlock the treasure (cache?)?

Apparently FSP and Kodash are both servers who have to ruin the fun for everyone. I’m running around as a princess with a pretty new kite and both sides keep killing me. Watch out, rogue tonic user with a kite, gonna kill everyone with cuteness!
Maybe we’ll get some servers on the next round who can enjoy a little fun.
Gandara
How embarrassing FSP, using AC view cheats to take out our AC’s inside behind the gate. The doors weren’t even upgraded either at Ogrewatch. I thought your server was better than that. Shame on you.
Gandara
I never said it. I just explained the source of QQ ^.^
And I know Gandara has a lot of roaming guild groups, and I really enjoyed fighting them this week (except YaK, whom I have yet to see with less then 30 ppl…)
Thing is, our guilds can find fights and have fun, it’s much worse for our PUGs.
Fair enough, glad you got at least a few fun fights.
I wish I had interesting and fun battles to tell from EBG. But the only interesting bit I have is me and Eze try to cap a fully upgraded Speldan with Dredge and the two RoF who came to defend wouldn’t leave their circle of NPC protection. XxX got it about 10 minutes later anyway. Almost had a good fight :P
Gandara
Aside from the “GG” posts for guild battles, lots of QQ’ing in this thread. More than the last couple weeks.
Well, many ppl in RoF are tired and annoyed with matchups we get – out of 5 random ones, we had exactly 1 balanced, vs RoS and WSR. Rest of them wre either vs significantly bigger servers or vs FoW and Vabbi…
We have no control over the match ups. If we are matched up against a server with a fraction of the coverage we have, are we supposed to go against the very purpose of WvW and not take towers? As for player battles, most of our guilds don’t blob up on BL’s and even guilds are given space on EBG. PuGs comprise to zergs primarily and especially in EBG you won’t see much different. And if you run into a guild group that mows you over b/c it was 2v1 or 3v1, it’s just another coverage issue that you can’t really expect us to bench half the players while roaming.
And to be honest, I would prefer a better match up too, as it’s boring capping and re-capping towers with little to no resistance.

100+ views and no comment, so it seems very few, if any (forum users), have it unlocked. I’ll provide an opinion, but I haven’t unlocked it myself.
While the stealth removal is nice, it’s not the reason I’d use it. Mass poison on zergs, especially ram users on gates, is what I’d get it for. Reducing the healing effectiveness seems pretty powerful when enemies are out healing AC (or other) damage on the ram users.
But, that said, it’s too expensive to invest in right now as I feel 75 points invested in other skill lines would benefit you more.

Aside from the “GG” posts for guild battles, lots of QQ’ing in this thread. More than the last couple weeks.

Agreed.
I’ve been saving my rank points for that reason, barring a couple tiers into AC Mastery and a couple points into the new Repair and Siege building supply use reduction. I don’t know what they’ll release next, so I won’t spend the points.
I see them implementing a way to reset points as a gold/badge sink. 1 silver or badge per point reset.
Gandara
Like the reconnect system back in GW1 and sort of how we can get back into Dungeon instances.
I would be on board with a 5-10 minute timer. 30 seems a bit high to hold a player spot empty.
But I agree, disconnecting because of lag and then having to wait 20-30 minutes is rather discouraging.
Gandara
Anet won’t address the lag and so people will stop playing WvW… maps get less people, and lag hides its ugly head and then Anet proclaims its fixed. /TheEnd
Gandara
EBG Gandarans facerubbed SM ALL DAY LONG, so there was some tomfoolerly going on around the map.
Fought the Grub on our outer Keep wall. Not sure how it got up there, but it was totally OP, burrowing into our steel plated walls.
We also decided we liked the view from the climbable tower outside our Keep and built some siege. The Alpha Golem was born and raised on the tower, but didn’t quite learn to fly, so it fell to its death.

It’s been like this for a long time. Devs have been silent too. It was acknowledged way back during the culling days, and we were told culling will be fixed, but not lag, as it is supposed to be a separate issue. Since then, no update on any resolution, if any is forthcoming.
Threads about lag are becoming as numerous as stealth threads.
Gandara
Remove: Server lag.
Add: Better rewards.
Both self explanatory.
^ This.
Gandara
It’s a huge issue, that never gets addressed.
I would prefer game polish, bug fixes, and lag being addressed versus content.
Yes, they are separate groups, but any company will proclaim agility among their employees, allowing them to be retasked to high priority issues. This is what Anet should do.
Gandara
It’s the combination of relatively high damage and being able to run away and reset the fight whenever they want that is the issue.
Especially in the JP, if a player goes toe to toe with a thief, they run, reset, and harass until the player makes a mistake.
Like all the white knights in here say, this is just one more anti-thief thread, learn to play, etc… etc…
But, does any other profession have so many complaint threads? Combined they wouldn’t compare to those for Thieves. Obviously there’s nothing wrong with stealth and their escape mechanics with so many threads saying it’s broken, just a bunch of “L2P” players. /s
D/D bunker eles, before the last couple updates were just as broken and they got adjusted, but the complaint threads on Invinci-D/D eles was never anywhere near as many as for Thieves.

Why do people insist…
…on forcing people to…
…click their threads…
…with this cheesy tactic?
Don’t hide part of your title in the thread!!!
And echo the rest of the answers. You can share the buffs is the main reason and to spread the AoE damage out. You could have a Lava Font hit five people every time or have Lava Font hit 10 people half the time (assuming perfect RNG). You reduce the effectiveness of an AoE attack which also makes buffs more effective by reducing the damage and allowing buffs like Aegis, Protection, and Regeneration not to be overwhelmed by damage.
Same with healing; spread out, your Water healing combo fields and finishers, as an example, might hit 2-3 people or they could hit the max number of people while grouped up.
I call everyone to stack just to stick with the current trend, everyone else does it so why shouldn’t I?
And we only stack on you because we heard all the cool kids do it, and we want to make you feel like you’re in charge.
Gandara
Take matters in your own hands.
Don’t upgrade towers.
Wear low level gear.
Wear no armor.
Don’t use defensive siege.
Fight with even numbers and don’t coordinate.
Should Anet fix it? Probably. Until then, get creative.
Gandara
Yeah, at least let the blue dolyaks give up their supplies when it wanders to our castle.
Dolyaks in general are bugged. It is quite common for the client dolyak and server dolyak to be really out of sync on its return runs.

Anet is silent on this topic.
Such a game ruining effect, yet no fixes.
And I agree, it has gotten a lot worse in the last month. I have 5 minutes of decent play, then the skill lag starts, then friend and foe players are teleporting around. Just now, a couple dozen people got DC’d from client crash.
Maybe it’s time to dust off my Steam account and play some TF2.

DT hits pretty hard too.
Fortunately Scepter is not a mainstay of most eles and most are too lazy to switch weapons for this use.
Still should be changed though.
Gandara
It’s the few initial strikes that take the most health. Popping retaliation when you are hit unexpectedly from a thief usually means you are at 1/4 health already.
Gandara
Why aren’t we Gandalf? That’s what I really want to know.
Despite the 9 rank difference, RoF, your VCY (I think) guild farmed us Gandarans nicely around Klovan earlier today.
Gandara
My nicely fortified tower will draw in the enemy and gather them into a nice packaged ball of loot, badges, and WXP. The upgrades let it last until the friendly zerg rofflestomps them all.
Gandara
Got a patch notification in WvW, for an update in 1-2 hrs, so let’s hope this fixes the issue.

Had a bit of fun with my guardian tonight.. although sadly left a bit frustrated. I was solo roaming around and saw a gandarian necro just jumping up and down watching me. As I moved closer he bowed so I bowed figuring he wants a duel. We start fighting and I notice 2 of his guildmates watching the fight, I am barely damaged after a couple of mins and he is almost down, when his guildmates jump in. Needless to say I get downed and stomped with all three of them jumping up and down on my corpse. All three were from a guild with tag of something like [XYZ] ?
No big deal, we are outnumbered anyway so no repair bill. Just a bit shabby IMHO, initiate a duel and gank when your player starts losing.
I know most Gandarian’s do not do this but none the less it was disappointing.
That’s unfortunate, I’m sorry you had a bad experience. Chances are the losing player asked his mates to help once he realized he was going to lose.
Earlier this week I ran up to a lone AG warrior was near Melons and we started goofing around, swinging at each other but not hitting (just auto attacks) and a couple other AG’s ran up and started wailing on me, so I had to run off. Some people just won’t others have any fun. All they see is a 3v1 easy loot bag.
TBH I would love to run around in a transformed state (doll, dolyak, etc…) with the other servers, just to spread some hilarity. If any AG or MS see this and are on EBG around 2100 GMT and want to do this, send me a PM with your IGN and we can see how long we can run around without being killed.

Why are you complaining about a Stomp than can be interrupted compared to Mist Form and Distortion stomps? Doesn’t matter what you do, you’re not gonna stop of Mist Form or Distortion Stomp. I am not certain, but Stability Stomps can be stopped with Blind.
Stealth Stomps seem more unfair to the downed player b/c you can’t trigger your interrupt on something you can’t see, but you can see Eles and Mesmers. So unless you have a teleport ‘interrupt’ it won’t matter.
If your teammates see a thief stealth near a downed player, chances are they are stomping and you should use an interrupt. Mesmers with GS#5, Focus#4, possibly Staff#5 if you are lucky, Necro’s Staff#5, Elementalist Staff #3, etc… Thieves could argue that they don’t their ‘invinci-stomps’ are weak because the lack of easy stability or invulnerable skills.
Nothing will stop Mist Form and Distortion stomps if timed properly. Stealth stomps on the other hand are easily interrupted if your teammates are paying attention.

Apparently no one who plays on EBG reads the forum, or maybe there is nothing exciting to write about when everyone is typically zerging around. :P
Not today though. MYA farmed us Gandarans for a half hour near Rogues Quarry despite our commander yelling at our pugs to stop chasing. While it was frustrating from a battle perspective, I was still impressed by your coordination and fighting skill.
Gandara
I agree with Anet’s reasoning to allow siege to despawn to prevent a tower from being trolled with rams or bad placement. But I tend to agree 1 hour is too short, based on the same reasons listed above. Only a small group of people tick siege.
Gandara
I would disagree that having orbs increase rewards only would make a strong server stronger. Cheating would still happen as it does no matter what. I am also not stating that orbs are the solution. It was just a idea to get the juices flowing. How would you increase the rewards of defending.
I was reflecting on the previously implemented Orb mechanic, that provided stat bonuses. “Each Orb of Power granted the owning world a 5% boost to maximum HP and 50 bonus points to all stats.”
Rewarding defending is a tricky mechanic as shown by its lack of implementation by Anet. Reward WXP for staying in a tower, and you’d have afkers clogging the battlefield. Anet tried to encourage defenders to stay by delaying the indication of a contested area by 30s, giving the enemy a chance to setup their incursion and delaying immediate reinforcements for servers who had no defenders at the tower. It didn’t work.
Loot acquisition is primarily from killing players (and NPC’s to some degree). Tower defenders typically don’t see that kind of action very often.
I would start with increasing WXP rewarded for repairs. It takes 10s to repair a wall for 10 WXP, another minute to run back and forth to a camp, etc. Not exactly a high rate of WXP rewarded compared to a zerging player who could get 60 WXP in seconds from tagging an enemy.
Successful defenses award WXP, but a zerg rolling through to destroy the offensive gets it too.
I’ve thought a lot about it and I consider myself pretty creative, but can’t come up with a method to reward defenders without it causing massive abuse. It would likely require a major redesign of game mechanics to reward defenders without it breaking the game.
Gandara
I personally think lowering the cost of the upgrades would increase the number of people upgrading making it work as a gold sink a lot better.
The core of the problem is only a small group of people consistently pay for the upgrades. Also this group of people is also frequently the ones that do not join in on the action where the majority of the zerg is. So their income is generally less.
To the bolded part: To add to that, those players more often than not feel obligated to pay for the upgrades as no one else would do it. Their own nature betrays them. It’s those core players that provide the backbone to the server that allows the others to roam freely, knowing they will be warned when a tower is threatened. Yet they are rewarded the least, despite providing one of the most valuable functions.
An idea was floated a while back, to let people pay into a sort of tower gold vault which would fund the upgrades. The idea was, rather than being forced to front the cost of a whole upgrade (Keep and Castle upgrades are expensive…to WvW’rs), they could pay for part of it, allowing the cost to be spread around easier. To prevent abuse, allow a Guild who claimed it priority to upgrades (e.g. queue upgrade order). Of course if there is money in the tower when it is lost, you’d lose the money. But tiering the vault size like the max supply cap would reduce how much players would lose if they had funded all the upgrades at tier 0. The max gold allowed would be the sum of unlocked upgrades.
Gandara
(edited by Esprit Dumort.3109)
The Orbs are a flawed mechanic. It made a strong server stronger. Encouraged cheating to get the valuable bonus. And forced the focus of battles on 3 locations (where the orbs are).
And your bonuses would have players flocking to the strongest servers for those buffs, like vultures on a battlefield.
Gandara
The cost is a gold sink.
However, it does not work as intended, because only a small group of people consistently pay into upgrades. They get to see their investment disappear far more often, and get increasingly frustrated. Because while they spend time and money on upgrades, they are removed from most of the action a.k.a. loot/WXP making the loss even more apparent.
So I tend to agree, remove cost, at least for Towers, as controlling the upgrade process is easy by sniping Dolyaks and capping camps. The gold sink is ineffective.
Gandara
(edited by Esprit Dumort.3109)
Only a WvW player would worry about hitting an enemy to stop them from disappearing.
Only a WvW player fears seeing a random portal appear near them.
Only a WvW player thinks getting Gift of Battle isn’t an accomplishment.
Only a WvW player smiles when they see a small green up arrow on an enemy.
Gandara
I was expecting a half baked post about fairness, but it turned out to be a well thought out post that did make some sense.
I would support some an implementation as painful as it may seem.
Never being in a T1 server, I would assume a decent amount of bandwagoners who only zerg around and not really contributing to defense and upkeep, so there is potential the penalty will hit a smaller group than you realize. Though, this encourages those players to move to lower pop servers where their upgrades have more effect.
Let me get this straight: you want to hinder the ability of larger servers to actually siege and make tactical plays – you know, those servers with more people to zerg with. But hey, I guess PvDoor is fun too right?
While many large servers may use tactics, most can win by sheer numbers and that’s one of the arguments OP is making, I believe.
WvW is about big battles, but even I don’t think Anet intended it to be a major zerg fest where 50 people run around steam rolling everything for rewards. Zergs are more PvD than small group play as zergs have no opposition so they just take and retake towers most of the time… aka PvD.
Anet said they would penalize large groups in rewards (loot and WXP), but that aspect is negated by the quantity of caps they churn out per hour because of little to no resistance. How do you defend against a 50 person blob with 4-rams and enough people to out-heal and out-buff any damage a handful of AC’s can turn out, all the while players trying to get in are wrecked by the insane damage field they need to walk through? Thus the zerg caps more per hour and tower rewards are the same in a zerg as is for a 5-man cap team. So, no incentive not to zerg.
Gandara
I’m pretty sure the takeaway from OP’s post is Anet giving us:
WvW Trebuchet Skill: Launch Asura
Gandara
A barricade type siege would be nice. But friendlies being able to pass through it freely would make it too powerful.
At choke points you could setup staggered barricades such that you run through and the enemy has to go through layers of barricades. Almost like insta-gates to hide behind.
You either make them as expensive as golems, so you can’t just spam them and/or limit number of barricades within a radius of existing ones.
Gandara
I think it’s dragon bash in addition to the WvW load that is making it worse than normal. I see lag even in simple PvE..
That does not seem like an unreasonable guess. Another PvP Arena and players bouncing around all around the map is probably making areas light up like a pinball machine.
I shutdown the game (gasp) because it is so bad right now. I will try again later when it is no longer primetime.
I’ll leave this here for the devs: Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud
Gandara
This lag has gotten a lot worse recently. I’ve been rubber-banding through doors, skills don’t activate. And this isn’t even in a zerg fight, just running around normal.
I lag out, then the server catches up and I’m dead somehow.
kitten Anet, fix this problem that is almost a year old now.
Rent some Amazon servers or something to spread the load.
