Your flaws were using assumptions as they were the norm…..in your case specifically that all rich players will forge b/c they are smart. That ignores the consideration of the time and effort it takes (which you very well know).

It simply shows how players can have a disproportionate impact on other players via wealth gained from only a few specific playstyles. In other words, there are “OP” playstyles when it comes to the economy. Anywhere else in the game something being “OP” is not tolerated for long as it’ll be balanced for the overall benefit of the game in general.

Disproportionate impact because you are better at doing something than others is not “OP”, it is the entire point of gaming.

Your comparing one playstyle with itself, which wasn’t the point. The point was disproportionate to other playstyles. We are pretty close to Halloween though, so I’ll let the straw man slide

You by yourself don’t matter. It’s the whole of players that participate in unbalanced play. They together have the unbalanced impact. Remember it not always about you.

You made some of the very same flaws in your reply that you said the other poster made.

That said….didn’t you say you bought over 100k gems with gold? Wouldn’t that be a perfect example of how one “rich” player has a disproportionate impact on other players than those that don’t? (seeing as it would raise the gem to gold ratio for others)

edit: and yes I know some that use rl cash would benefit if the convert to gold

How to save dungeons

The news that they are turning the gold spigot from dungeons to a trickle should not have surprised anyone.

Abandoning content and making it less rewarding is not smart. It’s borderline stupid as it invalidates your (devs) prior work and leaves players with less attractive options.

Anything borderline stupid-stupid is almost always surprising.

You are too reward driven. Where’s the fun, the enjoyment? Nope, it’s all about the lucre.

In a MMO that’s like saying “You’re too into killing monsters.” or “You’re too into exploring.”

It’s one of the core elements. Explore…kill things…get rewards…with work together thrown in there.

Yes but some are only focusing on the reward. It’s like focusing on the destination and ignoring the journey.

Sadly that’s what MMOs have devolved into. Build the most OP character that’s currently allowed and repeatedly do the content that rewards the most lucre in the shortest amount of time. Genre isn’t important. Lore isn’t important. Profession isn’t important. It’s about getting the most lucre as fast as possible for what? Get the best of everything and then what? You win so onto the next MMO?

That is up to each individual. If more individuals want to do something…so be it, it’s their choice to have.

Economy Questions Repost

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Essence Snow.3194

Is the intention to deincentivize dungeons
Yes

Why?

It’s dead-end content and injects gold from thin air (so to speak) into the economy, causing inflation. Two very good reasons to make adjustments moving forward.

How about 75 people farming 50-100 champion bags an hour handing out 2-10 silver each. That’s without counting all the blue/green being sold to merchant. Pretty sure more gold is injected in the economy by people AFK-farming Silverwaste than dungeon runners.

Wrong. The money flow and wealth generated from SW either goes directly to the gatherer via merchant transactions, or TP transactions with other players in the form of drops/salvage/mats. You might have noticed there is no end, flat gold reward in SW. I will say again, the gold rewards of dungeons come from thin air and are injected into the economy, causing inflation. That is bad.

I must also add that I see little difference between afk’ing portions of the SW events (for the record, I do not afk because I like to, I don’t know, play the game) and skipping dungeon mobs and cheesing dungeon bosses to maximize g/hr returns.

Each champ bag contain silver..or coinage. Also every item vendored does create coin “out of thin air”. That coin is coming from the same place dungeon coin comes from.

Moving to remove dungeons?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Essence Snow.3194

Essence Snow.3194

I am not a dungeon speedrunner.

I am not a min-maxer

I prefer full clear runs over skipping.

I enjoy dungeons for the opportunity to enjoy a bit of group content more involved than open world play that takes a little while and has a nice reward at the end.

I don’t do dungeons just for the rewards, but they are part of the overall experience. Lowering the rewards lessens the experience.

More than anything else this feels, to me, like an effort to devalue the base game so as to encourage sales of the expansion. They couldn’t come right out and remove dungeons without looking very bad in the game press so they just make them less appealing. I won’t be surprised if this is just the first of multiple steps to discourage playing dungeons.

I doubt that.

What I think this is: the removal of a gold faucet, for the reasons alluded to by the Pope; and an attempt to remove the reason to speed run the dungeons. If it works, as seems likely, then whose left in the dungeon LFG’s except people who are doing them for fun? This may result in less, “COF2 Exp only, berserker only, 8K AP only.” and less (maybe none?) exclusion based on meeting fast farm requirements. Ironically, this may not mean “anything goes” players getting a run faster.

It also may mean less players do it overall so everyone spends more time finding groups.

Salvaged mats economy to be DESTROYED

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Essence Snow.3194

As long as there are methods for those that want to directly acquire the materials they need within reason I don’t have mush issue with a salvaging shift.

I have concern that by “directly acquirable” Anet will dismiss the “within reason” bit. I fear that map rewards will allow the game population to acquire mats directly to decent levels, but the individual player will be “sol” and will still need to resort to the tp to acquire mats “within reason”-able time frames.

In a lot of matches it is very easy to tell early on that your team will lose. Once you’ve gotten credit for the match there is very little incentive to “draw” it out if you will. For that reason many players will either mess around or semi-afk till the end of the match if it’s obvious.

Guild Wars 2 Inflation Research

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Essence Snow.3194

I guess the biggest problem is the wild variation in the calculation.

If I look at 01/01/13-Today then the inflation over the last 2 years is only ~25%. I can pick any two arbitrary months to get anything from -20% to 50% in that same time period.

The best indicator of spending power is pretty much 100% tied to ectos. They are used in all armor, all weapons, and most other recipes. As long as you can buy ectos you can make everything you need. The ecto buying power has also remained remarkably stable over the last 3 years.

The problem is that many of the other goods you are tracking are based on changes to the game supply/demand curve, not inflation. Precursors are luxury items and have no place in an inflation calculation. Gold to gems are heavily dependent on gem store items and sales, not ingame inflation. If you remove these two erroneous items and weight ectos properly you will see a much different result.

I’d wager the biggest problem is that the ig economy is controlled for the most part. That makes it vastly different from real world economies and real world inflation. Thus we cannot define ig inflation by the same parameters as rl inflation.

Take ectos for example……we have had major alterations to them.
Ecto salvage rates being bugged
Ectos made salvagable into dust
Introduction of world boss rewards
Game population magic find increasing
Guild event rewards…etc..

How is inflation measured by items when major alterations are made to said items’ demand and supply? This goes for most every item in the game, making rl economics moot in a lot of areas.

Daily AP Limit

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Essence Snow.3194

Essence Snow.3194

Just a thing to note. There is a soft cap at the high end w/o daily AP included. The lack of AP available…..each AP takes much more effort and play at the high end than it does earlier on. Those at the high end have already done all the easy/quick AP, so they do not have the ability obtain more AP at the same rate as earlier on. This in itself allows the gap to be bridged.

I also hit the cap a while ago. I definitely do not feel liberated. I don’t really like the cap as I feel that AP are so scarce that there’s little reason to play my main account unless new content is released. I’ve been playing an alt account in the meantime.

So about silk

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Essence Snow.3194

Essence Snow.3194

I really like the approach of Guardian of Tyria.

And yeah, as Illconceived Wa Na pointed out, I am used to getting my own stuff and I really dislike the fact that there isn’t a really reliable way to get cloth. I know it is a personal preference to not buy everything from the TP.

I do remember when they made silk recipes into what it is today. It was to bring back the huge numbers of silk that players had and to create some artificial scarcity due to the necessity of having the material. I do find decreasing the supply by upping the costs on crafting recipes is a nasty way of doing it, if you intend to keep the upped cost permanently.

It would have been great if the cost would be brought down again since the market is now effectively drained with the 3 silk scraps per bolt and 100 bolts for the ascended material while the rest stayed at 50 with 2 of the unrefined versions needed for a refined version.

They didnt just change the recipe in order to suck out silk supply, they changed it to keep crafting cost for all three armor weights high. There is no reason to change the recipe again as it would bring us to back to the original problem of silk being worthless.

Again, if Anet thinks that more cloth within the economy is needed, they will adjust faucets, not the sinks.

Well that’s odd since they have repeatedly adjusted the sinks in the past.

Raids and guild limits

Essence Snow.3194

With the addition of more specialized content I was thinking that it would be a welcome thing to be able to join more than the current 5 guilds.

From the 5 guild limit some players use some for PvP focus guilds, WvW focused guilds, dungeon focused guilds, general PvE guilds, fractal guilds, event guild (ex..TTS), friend and family guilds, storage guilds, and soon to be added raid guilds.

It would be nice to be able to extend the number of guilds we can join when new content arrives.

This could be done in several ways.

Simply extend the limit per number of new content mechanisms
Introduce gem shop items that extend the guild limits
Use number of account characters to determine account guild limits.
I’m sure there are more that elude me atm.

Anywho..just thought it would be a nice addition to the game seeing in impending raids.

Which ascended slot first??

I suggest doing the PvP dailies (all 4) and the reward tracks. I have gotten a full set worth of ascended armor chests and about 8 ascended weapon chests. Much cheaper than crafting them but you do rely on RNG more.

Which reward tracks are you talking about exactly??

Any of them work as you want the loot boxes. I normally hoard those loot boxes until one of the PvP weekends with the MF buff and then open all of them. I’ve gotten most of them over the past six months or so just doing the daily achievements.

I have done all the pvp dailies on two accounts and have gotten exactly nada from in terms of ascended armor or weapon boxes, What I have gotten are ascended junk rings. So this is not a reliable method for all to say the least.

The best chances for ascended drops (armor/weapons) come from higher level fractals.

I never said that it was.

But in your example its still the demand that sets the price.

It might be helpful, if you define pooling of funds as well.
I would argue that in gw2 time spent equals gold and therefore funds, so if player B plays more than player A, he is pooling more funds than player a.

Should we in your opinion limit game access, so every player has the same funds available?

You should be aware of my position by now as we have debated ad nauseam since the start of these forums.

I see your pooling of funds, and rais you an 28% gold drain on the game economy.

Any price effects achieved through supposed pooling (which again in an of itsself is NOT responsible for high prices. Demand is.) is counteracted by the huge goldcut that goes to the goldheavens in the sky via the exchange.

Your view is very limited on the ingame economy. Your basic assumption is that there is some very few “rich” players and everyone else needs to buy gold via gems bougth from real cash. There is enough players with thousands of gold ingame who could easily affect any of the luxury goods markets, but do not do so because of no demand.

The data provided by Wanze, while open to interpretation in some areas, clearly shows that gems have been growing more expensive over time, while the gem to precursor price has been declining. This is indicator of following things:

- ingame inflation is higher than precursor price inflation (this is your first proof that there is no massiv rl cash->gem->gold->precursor exchange happening, at least not big enough to not be outperformed by ingame inflation)
- ingame inflation is real, and as was stated already has NOTHING to do with exchanges, be it on the TP or the gem exchange. On the contrary, the fees incurred here are a way of curbing inflation
- people actually going the real life precursor route do so at a severe tax (15%), while the gold used for this trasncation goes through an even higher tax (~28%)

Again, you can believe in any wild theories. Just please try to at least provide some proof besides speculation.

Idk where to begin with this. There are so many this wrong with this reply.

1) Elevated price demand is simply not possible without elevated coin potential. If no one has 1k gold, there is no 1k gold item demand. So any demand at elevated levels of coinage is a product of the means of which produced said coin.

2) As long as the mean of producing coin is capable of out pacing the sunk percentage from exchanges (hint…they are or else they would be used), the sunk cost does not fully counteract the means.

3) " Your basic assumption is that there is some very few “rich” players and everyone else needs to buy gold via gems bougth from real cash." That is not my assumption. I never said that, nor would I.

4) Most of the rest of your reply is based on the above falsity and a lack of understanding about how the gem exchange interacts with the ig economy, so not worth responding to.

That’s ^ an ill attempted strawman….lol

Although I don’t agree with cash to gem precursor thing being an issue, it does however reflect the pooling of funds which is an issue.

The same pooling of funds which helps keep elevated prices high. I’m looking at you tp.

How is pooling of funds responsible for high prices?

Demand is responsible for high prices, pooling of funds is just the tool to satisfy that demand.

Pooling of funds allows for users to have elevated amounts of said funds. If the tool responsible allows for enough users to pool funds that their demand impacts prices…it’ll elevate prices to their demand.

It’s a very simple concept:
If there are two types of players A: who does not pool funds and B: who does
Player B’s income will surpass what is possible of player A
If there are enough type B players and their demand out-paces supply
Then it’s their demand that prices will reflect and not type A players

In other words type A players have to deal with type B players impact.

It’s the same premise of nerfing farms. Those that farm farms that are very lucrative effect the rest of the community. To keep their impact from running rampant Anet nerfs the farms. However….other means of this happening are left alone.

As per usual the game should be designed around fun first and foremost. The economy and it’s balance should not dictate design. They should be secondary concerns. Make the game fun 1st, then balance the economy around that fun. That should be game economists’ job, not dictating game design. We have seen obvious examples of why giving the economy paramount consideration does not work, yet we continue trying to drive a square peg into a round hole. \But it is what it is …..I guess.

The OFFICIAL answer to the question if you keep the AP is no. I asked ANET ingame and they said no. Ryebread, an active developper told me so.

I argue that they should switch it to 0ap instead to stop it from being misleading.

It’s not misleading as it has been clearly stated by them in and out of game.

That’s precisely what “misleading” means in this context. Under the achievement tab it says a certain number of AP (which has most always been permanent), when in actuality we had to find out that it was not via other sources. Idk how you can even justify trying to spin that as not, but I guess there’s all types of ppl out there.

All progression on beta characters is not saved on your main account. Ever complete any achievements, such as the daily, and seen that it didn’t transfer over? Why did you think that these would be any different. Anet has stated many times that anything done on your beta characters will not make its way to your main. They even have it plastered at the top of the screen when you play any beta character.

That’s all well and fine but it doesn’t stop the AP under general from being “misleading”. That is what you responded to, yet somehow that color green is not green to you but some yellowish blue. You know what else is yellowish blue? GREEN.

Just because it’s there doesn’t mean that it’s misleading.

lol just because it’s green doesn’t mean it’s green…gotcha….lol

The fact that it mislead some into believing it was something it wasn’t means (by definition) it was misleading. Idk how else to explain what misleading means..maybe this:

mis·lead·ing
?mis?l?diNG/
adjective
adjective: misleading

giving the wrong idea or impression.
“your article contains a number of misleading statements”
synonyms: deceptive, confusing, deceiving, equivocal, ambiguous, fallacious, specious, spurious, false

Does that help?

It’s only misleading because people choose to ignore the facts. Your green is green example is not the same.

And those facts would be? Keep in mind that they would have to be in the same context as the AP in the general tab.

Kinda reminds me of magicians. We all know that some of the tricks they perform are not real magic, but that doesn’t stop them from misleading us.

Pre-orders are about WHEN sales revenues are received. It is a practice that allows sales to be independent of review. If you want to support that practice…you are entitled to do so.

Don’t like it one bit. It’s just another way to get pre-orders imo. If betas were open, then I would have no issue.

Will you complain when HoT adds 30,000 AP’s for HoT related content that you can’t get access to those AP’s without buying the expansion?

If yes: lol

If no: this is just early HoT AP’s

Pretty sure I said pre-orders. I am against the practice of pre-ordering that has gain popularity in the past several years. It’s not good for customers.

This really seems like balance that was not at all thought out. “Double health allow crits?” “Sure why not!” I can’t fathom any real thought was given to this.

[Suggestion] Extra Toon Slot is nice, but...

Anet just announces some changes that will make many players happy. Offering to refund core game purchases from the past 6 months is pretty nice of them. Even offering an additional character slot for existing accounts who pre-ordered is a great boon for veteran players.

However, the issue with the pre-order for Deluxe and Ultimate puts me in a bind. I was one of the first to pick up the Ultimate edition. My laptop screen nearly cracked after I started tossing my wallet at it last week. The one additional slot that was originally offered was perfect. Now we’re getting 2. I don’t need 2 extra character slots.

I’d like to ask that we players who purchased the Deluxe or Ultimate editions to have an option to get the Gem equivalent of the extra character slot.

“I’m not sure we all agreed that’s a problem.”

No problem…nothing to fix with a suggestion.

Soda may not have been the best example as most know that soda is ridiculously cheap. The containers are where the costs lie. The cost of the soda itself is in the neighborhood of 1 cent per 12oz.

I’ve got a deal for you. Ocean front property in Arizona. Now here’s what I’ll do for you. Two, yes, you heard me, TWO at a special price. How special you ask? Very special. Cheaper than anyone else that’s for sure.

Sure some may protest my price is too high, but you’re no fool. You’ll be laughing away sipping the finest Absinthe brewed this side of the Mississippi with your toes in the sand.

Heck, pre-order sight unseen and I’ll even throw in daily sunsets, warm sun, and occasional pleasant drizzle of rain. I don’t think it could be any more enticing if I shook a stick at it. No Siree.

Arizona ocean front property…get it for yourself, your wife, your sister, your brother, your kids, your father, and your mother. At this price heck buy one for Jimbo down the street. Nothing like having good neighbors while you sitting on ocean front property in Arizona.

Pre-purchasing is a bad practice that does not benefit players at all. It actually does the opposite. It’s kinda like blindly voting….by participating in it not only has your vote lost it’s meaning but it actively works against others.

I guess the bright side is I have money to buy Batman: Arkham Knight now. It will only cost $10 more than HOT, and it’s, you know, an entire game.

You can buy steam key for that game for <$25 all day long on ebay thanks to the nvidia bundles
