2) Paying for betas is not something we should support.

3) $50 for a mediocre sized expac? Might just spend $50 on steam sale and get a whole lot more content instead.

No. Why? Right before they are released and right before they are starting to be finished crafted (there will be a glut) t6 mats will skyrocket, a few times from speculating and then further from actual initial demand. All of which will require gold farming……yay fun……

This ends up making it cheaper, maybe by $100, $150-$175 after shipping. Though I would prefer the NZXT Guardian 921 RB ATX if it will work with the components.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/GNKzxr

I also have to make sure that all these components will work in the case (especially if I get the NZXT Guardian) and with the motherboard. Unless pcpartpicker is that good that I don’t have to double check. I’m going to keep playing around with it for a few days.

Few things. Raidmax is not known for quality, I would shy away from them. NZXT is fine although that Guardian case is a bit dated…..does not have usb 3.0 for example.

Here’s a thread to check out for that psu : http://www.overclock.net/t/1500086/why-you-should-not-buy-an-evga-430-500-500b-600b-psu

If you are anywhere near a micro center they have cpu/mobo combos that’ll save you at least $40 over buying most anywhere else.

For the gpu decent prices for the 280x are around $180-200. At $210-240 price you are in r9 290 territory. 280 for $149 and 280x for $189

Like someone else noted….check out reddit softwareswap for windows.

Dvd writers shouldn’t cost more than $15

After all is said and done that’ll bring you down about $180, which’ll allow you to get a solid state drive (dern filter) and a better psu.

Why can't you farm materials?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Essence Snow.3194

I got it, I just took it that the OP was one of those individuals that like farming/gatherings the materials to make an item on their own for the feel of it, and Bloodstealer’s easywin comment just made me think he was saying OP just wanted things handed to him.

That’s basically what he’s saying. aophts is wanting things to be easier for the rarer items. All rarer items, not just the ones that actually have a problem (easy to tell due to his complaint about T6 materials as opposed to, say, Silver Doubloons or Giant Eyes). How they are obtained in all games is the exact same: either by farming the item, crafting the item, or by buying the item (when applicable for obvious reasons). However, the items in question have to be rarer than the vendor-trash loot in order to have them still be valuable (which is why the vendor-trash loot is just that). This leads to Bloodstealer’s point: that all aophts really wants is for things to be easy, so that he can just ignore the fact that there’s a market at all and play by himself. There are no MMOs out there that make it as easy as GW2 for basically anything but the Legendary Weapon level equivalents (which, even then, aren’t actually in most other MMOs due to the fact that they’re the same as a considerably easier to obtain alternative) and the very select few odd-ball things (dungeon specific drops, bugged quest drops, and Giant Eyes leading the list). However, even the rarest stuffs in GW2 tend to not be as rare as a real grind-fest MMO, of which they’d just be barely in parity with.

In this case, using the T6 example given from the opening post, what exactly is there that you couldn’t reasonably farm? Outside of making every single item in the game, which isn’t exactly supposed to be a reasonable goal for everything but the most hardcore, there just isn’t any one specific item that requires enough T6 materials that it would take a completely unheard of amount of time in MMO terms (though, most of them would be pretty unheard of in normal RPG terms). Outside of all of the ones that require the very clearly problematic parts, ones that ANet has even stated they plan on doing something about in the expansion, you’re not looking at more than a week of heavy grinding. Which is absolutely pathetic in comparison to the months and months it takes for a similarly “hardcore item” from any other MMO in a similar vein.

I disagree. Have you ever tried to directly farm t6 mats? (directly, not indirectly) It’s simply not realistic in this game. You farm for loot in general here and those mats happen to be a byproduct of that. If you specifically target a specific item in this game to farm you are in for a rude awakening.

The acquisition methods of this game simply are not the same. They do not have that self fulfilling aspect. As such, much of the sense of accomplishment of making items in this game vanishes. Instead of “I built this house with my bare hands”, it’s “I worked a 9-5 and hired contractors to do the work”.

It doesn’t have the same feel for a lot of players.

RNG Conspiracy Conundrum

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Essence Snow.3194

Essence Snow.3194

Lets say if the issue exists, it turns out to be related to how a map interacts with 100 accounts accessing the rng function at an incredible rate; this type of issue wouldnt show up in a small instance with few accounts, and fewer loot generating events per time frame.

True, there might be some more exotic issues that wouldn’t be easily checked without an earlier suspicion of what they may be. On the other hand, dungeon (and mystic forge) tests would be enough to check for the most common claim – the one about the existence of intentionally flagged lucky/unlucky accounts.
Besides, while the bugs like you mentioned might skew the drop curve, they would be extremely unlikely to target specific accounts, and thus wouldn’t really relate to the theories being checked.

Not saying this means anything, but my second account which I anecdotally believe to be luckier than my main got 2 ascended drops and a precursor drop within 1 hr of each other the other night. lol it’s only 200ish hours old.

Particle Concern

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Essence Snow.3194

Essence Snow.3194

So after watching all the teasers for the Chronomancer and the Dragon Hunter, I have to say that I have a slight concern about particle effects. We all know that in certain events they can be overwhelming to say the least. I’ve noticed that both of these specializations have quite large flashy animations for a few skills. Now while this is fine and dandy when running alone or in small groups, it can obscure a significant amount of retail when more players are involved.

I hope I am mistaken and these new animations will not increase the particle effect overload. If however, this concern is grounded, I would love to see some sort of implement to address this.

One possible solution would be a particle slider. This has been a popular option for long time. This would allow the individual player to tone down particle effects to suit their whim.

Another possible solution would be particle scaling. This would be a game wide mechanic where particle effects would scale down as more players are in a given range.

So what do ya’ll think? Are my concerns unfounded? Are the solutions viable? Do you have any solutions?

What I have noticed about Guild War’s 2 is ALL the Gold coming into the game comes from the Gem store.

This is 100% false. The majority of gold in game comes from either Dungeon rewards (majority) or selling items to the vendor(all those grey items). Teq gives 2 gold minimum each time it is completed per person. I am sure the 3 headed Worm does a similar amount and other world events give a handful of silver. That is just raw currency rewards right off the top of my head.

BTW, I stopped reading at this point because when someone is SOOOOO wrong in the first couple sentences there is no reason to read the rest of a wall of text like that. IF there are any salient points made they will be repeated later on on a lesser wall.

Cherry picking one long boss event that you will likely do once a day at most to get you just 2 gold when it costs hundreds of Gold to craft anything epic? Really? All the other trash in this game sells for coppers and most of the bosses don’t give you any trash to sell for gold or even copper. Even the level 80 junk sells for coppers.

You tell me how do you make the hundreds of Gold needed in a reasonable time frame to level up your crafting & craft Ascended gear without selling anything on the black market (as your salvaging it all for mats) and without spending weeks or even months grinding?

The other poster is correct. Gold is not manifested by buying gems. There are enough players, who over the course of the game, that grinded it out to saturate it to the level it is now.

The only time at which gold came from the gem store was at the very beginning of the game and that has long since past.

There isn’t a discernible pattern. There will always be “unlucky” and very “lucky”.

Everything else in these threads aside…Why is that a good thing to have in a game? (accounts that remain on the low end of the curve)

Open world dr is 100% not removed by switching characters. This is the whole basis of dr from world boss camping.

Depends on perception. Exotics are good loot, there’s no arguing that. They’re better than rares, masterwork, and fine drops. Their player-assigned value is irrelevant. Most players complaining, zudet, if there was a system that implemented a “streak breaker” for those that got nothing higher than a rare for 10 hours. Why? Because such a system would likely be along the lines of “this is an automatic success for an exotic roll, standard rolls for type/quality/etc.” Which means they could drop an exotic after 10 hours, but because it sells for maybe 60s, they’re kittening it’s not “valuable.” Perception is what makes this such a bad discussion.

Afterall, is it “I’ve never had an exotic worth more than 10g but I’ve gotten exotics worth less (and I’m never going to bring those up)” or is it “I’ve never had any exotics period”? There’s a massive difference.

Additionally, there’s also the issue of when streak breakers would take place. Top and bottom 25%? 30%? 5%? Variable? There’s a lot of….elasticity I guess, in drops. Afterall, even within exotics you’ve got “typical” exotics, Named exotics (Drognarr’s shortbow, Eir’s shortbow, etc), and then Precursors (a step above Named). However, we dont know how the loot system actually attributes your odds of dropping them. We dont know if it’s EVERY exotic at once on a table if you “roll” an exotic, or if you’re rolling exotic, then rolling the “quality” of exotic, then the specifics of the exotic. Those two differences are important. One treats precs the same as say, an exotic rampager’s tribal bow of accuracy. The other treats them differently.

If they’re treated the same, then it’s sheer luck someone’s always getting precursors, nothing to do with their account. It also makes it immensely difficult to “break” that streak as the system sees a precursor as no different than any other exotic. If they’re treated differently, then it gets easier, but by no means easy.

10hours? I only got a few exotics in 9 MONTHS on my main account playing 8+ hours a day.

Here’s a question that I’m curious about. Out of all of the people that have an issue with RNG and see that there is a problem, how many actually have an understanding in regards to the basics of probability such as that you would get from a statistics course or petsonal research into the subject?

The thread is about loot. Not just rng. There are many more variables involved in loot, more places for this to go awry. Like I’ve said multiple times, the rng could be working perfectly fine. That does not however mean that loot is. That also does not mean that an unchecked rng derived loot system is a good thing to have in a game.

Almost everyone uses assumes loot when it comes to loot in this game. Almost every single complain thread is about RNG in regards to loot. It’s safe to use both in the same discussion.

What? How can I even respond to that when you use rng alone to counter a point about loot as a whole?

It’s like arguing a car runs fine b/c the gasoline is fine. You can’t omit all the other factors involved in making the car run. Maybe the gas is fine but the fuel injector is clogged. Will the car still run fine? No, ofc not.

It’s logical that a more played account will have more/better drops than a newer account by virtue of rolling the dice more.

In the same timeframe?

That aside…the thread as created is not just about old verses new accounts. It focuses more on trends over time because the over time bit matters.

…considering, that there were massive changes to drop rates both gamewide and for specific locations and/or items over time, comparing drops from 2 years ago with drops now really has no sense (besides realizing the obvious fact that they have changed).

The reason I used “more played” vs “older” is b/c a new account could very possibly have been played the same amount as an older less played one.

Who said I was just comparing my main account then and my new account now? I have played both almost everyday for three months. Prior to obtaining my new account I was comparing my and guildies loot to other guildies loot. In the guild we all know JJ (sry to call you out man) will consistently be the one to get the best loot. That has been happening since day 1 of the game.

Is it possible that the grandfathering of the newer Magic Find system was bugged and new accounts are not affected by it.

Or perhaps the bug is on the new account side and they are getting positive benifits.

There are all sorts of possibilities. That’s the reason I focused the thread on “loot” and not “rng”. Rng could be working flawlessly for all we know, but when acted upon by other variables in the “loot” algorithm the outcome (loot) becomes unexpected.

Now I don’t think unchecked (<key word)working rng has any place in a game either, but that’s not really the focus of this thread.

I bet B is new and A is older. I bet B wasnlt played for a long time.

You bet. This doesn’t make that true however.

it does make it true if every player who complains of this has the exact same answer.

…no, that doesn’t mean it at all. All that means is that every person who complains about it complains about it. You seem to ignore that not every player does share that experience however. You especially seem to ignore that there are players with exactly opposite experience (seeing old accounts get way better drops than young ones).

Can’t ignore what doesn’t exist. Every player that I’ve spoken with does share this experience. I don’t ask " Is your new account better loot than you old?" It’s “Any difference in loot?” it’s always yes the newer is better. Never once has anyone ever said “My main gets better loot”. The fact they all have answered the same two questions with the exactly same answer…

Anecdotal evidence. Tastes great with crackers, little good for anything else. But since we’re traveling down that road, let me hop on the train going the opposite direction. I have three Guild Wars 2 accounts. One with 5,645 hours, one with 850 hours, and an infant account with 98 hours. I’ve gotten 2 precursors on my main account. I rarely even get exotics on my other accounts. Therefor, I postulate that older accounts are luckier than new accounts, based on my experience. Everyone I’ve talked to agrees with me.

Or it’s just that RNG doesn’t care when you made your account, it just rolls the way it rolls. Yeah, that sounds somewhat more likely.

It’s logical that a more played account will have more/better drops than a newer account by virtue of rolling the dice more. There really isn’t anything to question there about luck as a general observance.

The reverse does not share that logic.

That aside…the thread as created is not just about old verses new accounts. It focuses more on trends over time because the over time bit matters.

I’ve never thought of a computer program as really being capable of truly being random.

But even if it can’t it doesn’t really matter, because the program doesn’t have emotions and will just work the same way for everyone.

I said sufficiently random. I can’t predict what loot will drop, nor can anyone else. The “seed” has been confirmed not to be connected to account number, or age, or the height of your character or any other number that would permanently kitten any particular account.

The same complaints pop up every so often since the game was released, and if the system was bugged they would have found it by now. Nor was it secretly created to favor new accounts, old accounts, or people named Charles or whatever. As long as you vary your in-game activities to avoid triggering DR you have the same chance at getting a particular piece of loot as everyone else. Anet gains nothing and loses much if they deliberately cheat players out of pixels that are ultimately worthless anyway.

Good point, but about the seed numbers. We know thats its not tied to character or account number or anything but…(puts on tinfoil hat) what if it’s tied to the activation code? Apparently thats a randomly generated number as well, and some parts of that number if they fall in a certain range, it makes that accout more “lucky” than another account.

Just a thought….

And/Or the rng is fine but it has to interact with other account modifiers to produce loot and a product of that interaction causes discrepancies.

With a low enough chance you can get a significant percentage getting nothing while a relative few get a boatload given enough trys. That’s the nature of randomness. There isn’t a discernible pattern. There will always be “unlucky” and very “lucky”.

Just to be clear here, I know that there is nothing wrong with the loot system and that it truly is sufficiently random, and that any extremely lucky streak can end at any time.

Just out of curiosity…How do you “know” this to be true?

Yeah I agree and unfortunately my expected reality is all these threads get deleted and I’ll be getting an infraction if not a ban from forums.

Everything else in these threads aside…Why is that a good thing to have in a game? (accounts that remain on the low end of the curve)

@ Indigo
For me an item I got as a drop holds more value than an item I bought off the tp, even when they are the same item. It’s part of playing an action/adventure mmo for me. I go out kill monsters and get stuff. The thrill of getting something as a drop goes a long way for me. Buying it off the tp?..not so much.

Ultimately a failsafe code for low side outliers like there are for other games would be fantastic. I realize however that’s rather complicated. In the meantime or instead…..a sign of good faith that’s shows they give a kitten about a lot of players’ concerns would be nice.

You aren’t understanding how hard it is to gather evidence relating to this possible problem. Sorry you can’t understand….

All I would like to see is him show evidence towards the claim in his opening post that one account gets better loot, while playing normally and roughly equally. It doesn’t have to be perfect or prove anything beyond that

He could start a thread and post on it every day.
Day one, old account A. Played X hours, did content Y. Got total # of each: masterwork, fine, rare, exotic, gold earned, etc.
Day two. New account B. Recorded loot over same amount of time as day one. Did same content as day one. Records all drops again.
Day three. Account A. Played X hours, did content Y. Records loot
Day four. Account B. Records loot drops over same amount of time and content as day 3.

Rinse and repeat over at least a month. Gives running totals of each accounts masterworks, fines, rares, exotics, gold earned, etc. on each day’s post.

It doesn’t need to be more than that to show if his claim that account B makes markedly more than account A is accurate or not. He doesn’t need to prove that RNG is working or not working on this, a rough first pass.

And then what? If I were to do all this, as soon as I posted it someone would quickly state that it’s irrelevant as it’s insufficient data. Then we’d be right back to where we are now except I’ve spent a lot of time doing something for basically no reason. That’s not really great incentive in my book.

This is a perfect example of what the person you quoted was referring to.

I call ’em as I see ’em.

So do I. That’s why I made a preemptive note about it. It’s fun to see things come to fruition.

Were you under the impression that your comment would surprise me?

It evidently went over your head. No worries
