Cataclysmic Contradictions

in Lore

Posted by: Excelliate.7914

Excelliate.7914

Yes, I understand what you’re saying, but I don’t really think there was any established lore about the Orrian people in GW1, so Arenanet got to fill in the gaps. Admittedly, they did make Orr seem like a city of superhumans , but from a lore standpoint, I’d say the person who wrote the scrolls was probably exaggerating the magic use. Also, I think the developers meant to point out that there was a lot of magic because of Zhaitan.

Cataclysmic Contradictions

in Lore

Posted by: Excelliate.7914

Excelliate.7914

Well, based on what you said, yeah, the Orrians should have crushed the Charr. But they didn’t, and that was established in GW1, so I don’t see how that damages GW1’s lore. I’m going to venture a guess that Abaddon (who wanted Orr’s downfall and was in control of the titans), may have had something to do with it.
Khilbron was also able to teleport in GW1, an ability which he may have had before becoming a lich, so transportation of the scrolls wouldn’t be a problem.

Method of corruption.

in Lore

Posted by: Excelliate.7914

Excelliate.7914

That’s a very broad question. There are a lot of different methods used by each dragon, but I’ll list some ways.

Zhaitan doesn’t really corrupt living things, only corpses and apparently water and earth. There are instances of living beings showing signs of Zhaitan’s corruption, but that was from a specific artifact.

When Kralkatorrik created the Dragonbrand, it was described that his breath and presence crystallized living creatures below and turned them in to branded. I can’t recall any instances of a creature becoming branded within the game, but the Sentinels say that some of them have been turned into branded, and I would guess that happens when a dragon champion forcibly corrupts them.

Jormag corrupts many Sons of Svanir by offering them power—if they accept, they become Icebrood. Also, Svanir shamans can preform a ritual that forcibly transforms people into Icebrood, and certain artifacts and powers can instantaneously cause corruption. Other Icebrood are created by being frozen in corrupted ice, and are slowly transformed.

Primordus doesn’t corrupt living things, and we’ve never encountered a minion of the DSD.

Ebonhawke + Ascalon

in Lore

Posted by: Excelliate.7914

Excelliate.7914

I seriously doubt Ebonhawke will be assimilated by the charr. The humans are the only race with the money and experience to supply luxuries, which puts them at a huge economic advantage over the charr. Ebonhawke will more likely become a place where the humans sell goods to the charr, and the surrounding plains will probably grow into smaller townships as more humans move in to take advantage of the new economic vantage.

Why does Zhiatan have a mouth?

in Lore

Posted by: Excelliate.7914

Excelliate.7914

Why does Zhaitan rely on a weak, detached mouth in the first place? Honestly, I felt that was just a silly plot-bandaid to defeat a dragon they made too powerful.

He is a zombie dragon capable of raising continents by his command for pete sake! Couldn’t he have had more reliable means of eating than only two mouths? (One in dungeon, one in personal story.)

Zhaitan seems to move the least of any of the dragons, and he needs a reliable way of consuming magic without having to fly around all the time. Anyway, Zhaitan doesn’t just feed on magical items, he consumes any and all magic—the mouths are just for the solid stuff.

You’d think after killing Zhaitan, we would have more insight into the true nature of dragons?

I wish. But with four or five dragons left, they can’t just give out all the secrets at the beginning.

Lazarus the Dire Legacy?

in Lore

Posted by: Excelliate.7914

Excelliate.7914

There’s a solid chance in my mind Lazarus is leading (secretly or not) the current white mantle. If the remnants of the mantle fled into the Maguuma Jungle, and Lazarus was wounded from the damaged aspect, he would probably try and take refuge with them. From that position he could direct the remnant Mantle, and keep them relevant for over two hundred years. It seems like the bandits have a very large presence in Maguuma, and since they either are or are working with the Mantle, I would guess Lazarus is operating somewhere in that general area (if he didn’t run off into the Mists as soon as the dragons woke up).

If Lazarus is playing a part in the Mantle/bandit situation, I think it’s also possible Lazarus could be in contact with the Inquest and Nightmare Court, seeing as bandits have an alliance with them in the Brisban Wildlands.

The Flame Legion and the Elder Dragons

in Lore

Posted by: Excelliate.7914

Excelliate.7914

Dragon worshipers tend to be very vocal about who they support. I’d imagine that it would also be harder to use a dragon’s power while it was awake without its knowledge (seeing as the flame legion uses it on such a large scale.) Also, from what we’ve seen of Primordus, he doesn’t really give power, rather, he simply destroys. It seems like Primordus would sooner destroy the flame legion than give them strength.

Actually, it does resemble Ashford Abbey, but I doubt those are related. I want to say it was Jotun made, but it really doesn’t look like any Jotun structures we know of. I don’t think the Forgotten lived that far north, and we know the modern races or dwarves didn’t make it. My guess would be the Mursaat or the Seers, the Mursaat homeland was described as having tall towers, and that’s what EotN is, and the Seers are probably named Seers for a reason (suggesting a relation between them and the Scrying Pool).

can the dragons have intelligent thoughts?

in Lore

Posted by: Excelliate.7914

Excelliate.7914

@Excelliate: “the other dragons have massive dragon champions that look like they were part of the same species before corruption”

The Shatterer was, by far, never a living being. It is hollow – completely so. It’s just animated stone, lightning, and ether. The Claw of Jormag by looks is just a skeleton encased in ice (very similar to the Dragonspawn, in fact).

Thus the only fleshy dragon champion that actually looks like a dragon other than Zhaitan’s champions would be Glint. And given how an ogre can be changed by Kralkatorrik to look like this I wouldn’t put it past him to be able to change, say, a drake into looking like Glint.

The only evidence of a draconic race in ancient continental Tyria lies in Bone Dragons, which lack of back body.

I’ve looked at the Shatterer, and I can’t rule out it not being an organic being at some point because its legs still look solid, and if Kralkatorrik can change things in crazy ways, than it could change a dragon that far too(same goes for Jormag). It is true though, that there is little supporting evidence for a large species of dragon to exist in ancient Tyria. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is the huge bones in the Ascalon Catacombs in GW1 that don’t look like Lupicus bones. I guess I want there to be a dragon race to explain where the elder dragons came from, and their minds—they could have been originally intelligent.

can the dragons have intelligent thoughts?

in Lore

Posted by: Excelliate.7914

Excelliate.7914

While Zhaitan’s champions could just be conglomerated pieces, or at least formed recently, it seems unlikely to me for a few reasons, the first being that, to me at least, the champions look like they are from one being, and Zhaitan seems to have all of its minions in the same stage of decomposition, no matter how fresh their corpses were. Another reason would be that the other dragons have massive dragon champions that look like they were part of the same species before corruption.

We know of at least two other dragons preserved since earlier awakenings — Glint, and Drakkar(Less similar to the others, but still dragon-esque). Now, the dragons could be created by the Elders, but if there was a dragon race, it seems more likely to me that the champions are holdovers, and preserved from awakening to awakening.

can the dragons have intelligent thoughts?

in Lore

Posted by: Excelliate.7914

Excelliate.7914

True, but why didn’t Zhaitan just send out all his champions at once? With no prior warning, it seems like he could’ve taken over all of Tyria in one move (and created plenty of minions in doing so). It seems like the champions must’ve been sleeping under Orr like he was, as there aren’t very many dragon corpses to raise in modern Tyria.

Of course, if Zhaitan was merely preparing or not fully awakened, it would make sense to keep his main force close for defense. Maybe the dragons hold back because they are being cautious of the other dragons, not because they’re worried about us.

Excelliate.7914

I would like to think they are very unintelligent, because of how horrible their strategies and reactions are. It seems if they were intelligent, everybody would be dead by now. Of course, they do in fact show intelligence at certain times, so either their bad decision making is due to a need for the good guys to win, or the dragon’s minds are too chaotic to make rational decisions all the time (or something similar).

Sylvari Form

in Sylvari

Posted by: Excelliate.7914

Excelliate.7914

I doubt the sylvari are dragon minions. The other dragons corrupt humanoid things to make humanoid followers. Sure, the dragons can create followers from non-living and formless things (in fact, that is all Primordus does), but it seems that they only have a few truly aware followers at a time, and even then they are bound to the dragon’s will and imbued with immense power. If the sylvari are dragon-created, then the sixth dragon is either dead, or not malevolent.

Sylvari Form

If a plant race was going to be humanoid, it would look like whatever it was designed to look like. A plant’s biology is so far away from an animal’s that if a plant were to emulate an animal, it would basically be an animal. I think Anet wanted to branch away from the traditional fantasy races (this would be why they offed the dwarves).

Anyways, Bard, you may be right about the form coming from Ronan. It just seems to me that there is equal evidence on both sides. Now that I think of it, it is possible that there are other trees, and they chose the human form simply because they were copying the Pale Tree, which grew first.
