Do you still only play Guardian?
Well, almost
I was told in one of my previous threads here (yes, I always listen to advices) to learn the classes that cause me most problems by playing them. So I started with Necromancer. Created one, learnt the class, went to SoloQ. First tried some 1v1 with another Necros to see how good am I comparing to them, won more of them. Then started to fight Guardians to see who will defeat me and how. Nobody succeed.
Still the experience was useful, I’m ways more effective against Necros now. And of course I haven’t played enough on my Necro I started to miss my Guardian too much. Is this weird?
Now can’t decide what to be my next profession. Probably it should be a warrior, because last 2 weeks managed to kill only 1 of them in 1v1. But Idk, I don’t like this class much. And in the meantime I realized I’m going worse on my Guardian and decided to stick with it for a while till I figure out why. Maybe it’s a mistake.
If your pc can take it you can also record your own fights, then watch them back in peace. That can really help you evaluate your own gameplay.
Oh it’s a great idea, I definately will do it! Thank you!
Thank you all for taking your time to read my complaining and trying to help me to find reasons and solutions, much appreciated. I found something useful in every one of the posts.
@redslion – I get what you mean, I’m planning to find a team at some point, but right now I feel so insecure that I don’t dare even to enter SoloQ. Moved back to Hot join till I understand what my problem is.
@NevirSayDie – It’s not the case, I started to play SoloQ at rank 15 and actually felt much better than in Hot join.
Chances are you have improved a lot, but just don’t feel as powerful.
I like this interpretation
@Cynz – you hit a part of my problem.
After watching all these vids I realized I’m the only one who uses keyboard + mouse for the skills and changed this so now I should use only my left hand for the skills. But it’s not that difficult and I can’t blame this change for all my problems.
@Junkpile – yes, this is what I learnt in the difficult way. But there should be some balance between thinking and spamming skills. Looks like I should find it alone.
I have this feeling last 2-3 week. Like, when I started to play PvP I was better, and now at level 20 I have the feeling I don’t improve, but the opposite.
I’m a guardian. When I started to PvP I was fighting without checking even the profession of the opponent. I was face-rolling my keyboard, clicking the skill immediately when it’s ready and somehow was winning most of my fights.
Then I decided to improve, started to read about builds, tactics, weapons, started to watch streams. Started to think more. And guess what? Started to lose.
Before I was winning more of my fights 1v1. Now I sometimes get downed before I can check the profession of the player attacking me and what exactly he uses.
Before I was always one of the top players of the team. Now it rarely happens, sometimes I’m last.
Why I posting this?
First: Can anybody tell me why? What I’m doing wrong? It takes me too much time to check what attacking me and to decide what to use. And my HP melting like a snowball on the sun in the meantime.
Second: give me some hope, do you think if I keep trying I’ll get used to it and finally will start to improve? Or better to go back to my face-rolling, random-dodging style?
And third: Please tell me I’m not the only one who feels like this at some point. It will make me feel better. Well tell it if it’s true of course
And the most funny is, although I become worse and worse, my leaderboard rating somehow went 20% higher for last 10 games. Now I meet better opponents and this makes things even worse.
My hammer’s Symbol of Protection is not affected by the trait Writ of Persistence (Symbols last longer). It’s still 2 secs.
Hey iBullStrike, I came across your thread by accident (really no idea why decided to check this sub-forum), but I think we are what you’re looking for. A big, friendly, helpful, PvX guild with Teamspeak on SFR. Check us out here:
Rank farm servers. A great idea, thank you A-net. Only… could you guys make them more, because they’re always full? Please?
You know what? Make ALL the servers rank/ glory farm. Thanks in advance.
I’m done. I play for fun and it’s just… not fun. Okay?
Let me help you: their average rank is 31, 2 our is 13, 4.
For some reason they were grouped all 5 35 secs before the game starts, till we were only me and the other guard, lvl 1.
still won but…. too much kitten
bwahahaha
My last game, we started with 4, then 1 left in the middle of the match and we ended up with 3. We still would win if we had 4. If you can see the chat box they accused us of cheating :/

In the week I’ve been PvPing this has to be the most absurd game I’ve played.
Something must have gone totally wrong :o
What? Unfair match-up? Who said that!?
Yes, insinuations and manipulations!
I can’t see anything unfair, average rank 3,6 for one of the teams vs 27, 6 for the other.
I can’t get it. Why anyone will farm for useless blue vases?
because of the numbers dude – the numbers!!
they make your e-fallus grow
Eh oh
So basically the idea is: you invite a girl in your flat, then show her your huge amount of glory and boom! Instant sex.
Wait, 4 Guardians lost on Skyhammer? Rut roh raggy.. :P
You can guess, we were a pathetic view.
I can’t get it. Why anyone will farm for useless blue vases?
Let’s make a compilation of the most absurd PvP games we have. Post here your pics
I will start with mine.
I went to university’s, studied IT (BIT graduate) and the people I met there, well lets just say there isn’t a single verbal thing in the verse that could enrage me after the insults and comebacks that we threw around there. So people can’t get under my nerves, nonetheless people shouldn’t go around insulting others.
Hmm before my brother made my first account in MMORPG my idea about nerd culture was formed by series like The IT Crowd and Big Bang Theory. Nothing to prepare me about the nerdrage.
Personally I think allied and enemy names should be invisible till the end of the match. Red Team 1, Red Team 2, Red team 3 etc etc.
Absolutely! I didn’t know you can see the opponent’s names and ranks before the game in this format I’ve only played hotjoin and SoloQ so far. You’re right, for psychical weaker players it could be very oppressive and to make them to give up before even the match starts.
Btw one of the things I thought as a very good idea is the fact in WvW you can’t see the enemy’s names. All you can see is for example “Desolation recruit” or “Elona Reach scout” etc. You don’t know the names of the players who you kill or who kill you and I think it’s how it should be, just like in a real war. Why it’s not the same in sPvP?
Hey you are rank 16 already, for this game’ standards that means you are a veteran.
Also the rating system tends to place seasoned players and newcomers next to eachother so that experienced tournament runner like you can teach newbies the basics of competitive matches.
It’ s so awsum
Do I smell sarcasm here?
No seriously I don’t feel like a veteran at all, with my poor 2 weeks experience I still feel a newby. Hell I still can’t decide on my build, I change it every day so I do with my weapons. I play one day with hammer one day with greatsword and can’t decide which one I prefer. Aaaaa why it should be so hard to chose! Lol
Hey lynnhood, I read your posts on the thread about downstate and it totally changed my view over this topic, they sound very convincing. I’ll keep an eye on this argument it’s very interesting.
Firstly, it is out of our hands and our control, so we cannot really do anything about that, other than giving constructive feedback.
The philosophy of my life
Try to accept the things you can’t change.
I do not think central authorities that police well manneredness are the answer to the problem. Although I understand the sentiment. They are willing to distribute bad feelings so why should they not suffer a little bit as well. But if the community is strong enough and has a right compass for countering that behavior, such behavior will diminish. [I know that you can never eradicate it, but that is not the goal, the goal is to keep it manageable, so that the dominant experience is fun and gratifying for everybody in the long run.] I think making people understand that it is in their self-interest (see above) to be nice and helpful (or at least not behave like a kittenbag) is a much better approach.
Okay I will agree. When I think of it the rude people are not that many, they are just the noisiest. Even though I’m a girl I’m not very emotional but they still menage to upset me sometimes. When this happens I switch my laptop off, go out, start to remember which are the really important things in life. Because well, as a competitive person I always put efforts to be one of the best in what I’m doing, but achievements in a video game can’t be the goal of my life.
Now please have a look at this awesome rank 1
Btw never knew I’ll be the highest rank in the team soon…
Hey hey again Corian a very nice thread you have here I wish I’d seen it before I posted mine. I could just use it for my post. Now with all these beginner’s threads the old pro players will be like omg they are coming, they’ll invade us and steal our employments. My fault.
I feel like you have to suck really bad for them to pm you ahaha, cause their are plenty of kids I want to rage out but I wouldn’t take the time to pm them about how bad they suck lol. If only I could block people from being grouped with me ever again.
As I can see from your post you’re the only one who is grouped up with beginners/ bad players constantly. Till the others have the perfect teams, you always lose with all these noobs that fill your team every game and you just can’t shine with your awesome PvP skills because of all the dumb players like me, who bring you down! How Anet could allow beginners to play with experienced players and to ruin their game, it’s such an injustice!
I feel for you.
(edited by Eyia Hellhide.7320)
Firstly, thanks for staying with sPvP despite the obvious hate flowing your ways for basically just starting. I do not know how many players tried out sPvP and were seriously put off by the culture of cussing and belittling other players that is apparent in many games in soloQ.
This is what I think, because once after the next uncalled rage I shared in guild chat “Btw PvP community is very unpleasant” ALL of my guild mates answered “True, that’s why I don’t go PvP anymore”. There were different comments but the meaning was the same.
You have made a very good analysis of the situation now don’t you think it’s much like Catch 22? PvP will improve if the community grows. The community will grow if PvP improves.
It’ s true PvP has many things to be fixed/ improved/ reworked. But what I think is the first step should be healing the community. For 2 resons:
1. Even with all the problems PvP games are great fun, and PvP in this game is better than in many other games
2. With nice and helpful community everyone will want to give it a try and everyone will want to be a part of it because it’s a normal human wish, to belong somewhere where is welcomed and then well known, to belong to a community. Why one of the first things we do here is to join a guild?
So I totally agree with your a/b/c/d/e points and will add f: temporarily ban for offensive language. Rage is rage and it’s alright sometimes but insulting people and making them feel bad in a game that is supposed to be fun should not be tolerated. That’s what I think.
first point, Balance is a lot deeper than just how many peeps u got on ur team.
I agree. But this kind of disbalance is the first thing you notice when you’re new, it’s so obvious and so easy to be solved.
OMG! This explains so much!
I hear you bro
This is actually one of the funniest parts of the community that never makes sense. You kill someone and you’re told you suck or you’re a noob. Really? I’m not the downed and dead player, so if I’m a noob and suck, what does it say about you?
There is no logic in rage lol
Anyway I don’t think I’m better than the player I’ve just killed. Sometimes I really am or I just know my class better, but sometimes it could be just luck or any other reason – for example he has lag, his mouse just broke or his mommy is sitting next to him shouting at him to tidy up his room.
Yeah got it thanks
Thank you for the detailed answers and I’m a guardian.
I have some questions to ask and I don’t want to start a new thread only for my questions so I’ll use this one and I hope someone will have a look and answer:
1. I noticed when I fight a ranger and I use Judge’s Intervention (“Teleport to your target and burn nearby foes”) it always ALWAYS teleports me to ranger’s pet, not to the player although I always have the player targeted before I use it. Is this some kind or bug a what? How to keep the ranger targeted?
2. After defeat a ranger the finisher takes more time (btw is there a need they to be so long and solemn?) than their pets to revive them. What to do, always to kill the pet before click “finish them” or there is another option? Because it really takes a lot of time.
3. How to know if I have a title and what it is? I know it’s a very nooby question but I can’t figure out how to know. I mean I can see the other players have these titles like “slayer”, “golden” etc and I can’t see if I have.
(edited by Eyia Hellhide.7320)
It happened to me once and made me to laugh so hard.
I defeated a player for the point and started to make all these dramatic movements to finish him and in the next second I was flying down and triumphantly smashed on the rocks.
So I took a lesson and when I finish a player never stay close to the edge.
Here is something I noticed recently although I’m not sure if it’s a bug or it’s supposed to be like this: when I fight a ranger in 1v1 and I use Judge’s Intervention this always teleports me to the ranger’s pet, not to the player even though I always have the player targeted before I use it.
No!
When I bought the game and started to choose my race/profession I was told races have no racial bonuses/ penalties. So I chose a norn because they look so awesome.
Then when I started to PvP I realised this is just not true. Being a norn I’m always the first targeted when the team is together in a point, I have a chance only if there is a male from my race. I don’t complain or something I’m just telling there is a racial penalty for being that big.
There are enough threads on PvP section of the forums stating that Asuras have this advantage in PvP to be very hard to be targeted especially if they are necromancers. Till with the height there is no some other bonus (more power for example), there is no reason norns to be bigger.
infantrydiv, of course it’s true and I understand everyone happens to lose their temper sometimes. But see, there is a difference between “guys, we are a pathetic team” and “you are pathetic teammates”.
And yes, confronting the best players in your games can be a really frustrating experience and I hope this problem to be resolved soon. Till then all I can say is well, life is not fair and some lessons need to be learnt in the difficult way
Here are some advices from me
You don’t need to be rich to have good armor. First, do you personal story. Pay attention to the recommended level and do your best to keep up with it, because these quests give you the most experience and some of the best low-level gear. They’ll also give you a good amount of spending money, which you’ll need for the game’s fast travel system and various vendors.
Second, when you explore the world you’ll meet these challenges everywhere – you know, NPCs with hearts on their heads who give you some quest to do. After completing the task, the heart becomes yellow. Go back to them and you’ll see they also now have a sign for a karma vendor. Talk with them and see what they’re selling. You can buy some of the best gear for your level from these vendors.
About weapons, it’s all a personal choice. I use Greatsword/ staff for PvE and Hammer/ Staff for PvP. Just try all the weapons you can and choose what fits you the most. When you find a new weapon equip it. Go kill some stuff. Unlock all the effects. You’ll find you feel better with some weapons than with the others.
Also every time you use a Trait book (needed at levels 11, 40, and 60), all your character’s Traits are reset. You can use this to adjust your build or try out new ones.
Good luck with your guardian
(edited by Eyia Hellhide.7320)
@cymerdown – thank you for your welcome and for your advices. Yes, I got the mini-map now is fixed to show north, but it’s useless. I don’t need to know where north is, I need to know where I should go. While playing I can’t know where exactly north is, what to do, to look for the moss on the trees?
And yes, I actually already met some very nice people and only one who was raging against his teammates. Yesterday I was impressed by a player from the opposite team, who greeted us and wished us GL before the game. The match was difficult and tense at the end we won with something like 501-496 and guess what? He said “Congrats, good game”. More players like this please!
@Kugkug – I can’t ignore the chat, at least I keep attention for the message saying “Player A has targeted player B press T to assist”. As I said I have some problems to target. And as Quickfoot Katana said, sometimes people there tell you where to go and what to do. But yeah, basically trying to ignore the useless raging comments.
(edited by Eyia Hellhide.7320)
Yes MaXi I’m talking about hotjoin. Haven’t tried SoloQ till today.
Don’t allow jerks to let you down selan, be proud with your class.
And yes Centi, I follow the same rules myself. They really help
Now reporting about my first SoloQ experience.
It’s awesome! I love it! Thank you so much for telling me to give it a try. I had 6 games so far, won 4, in 3 of them I was the player with most points (brag, brag) not that this has any matter, just I needed it to give me some confidence. In one of the lost games we played 3v5 we had 2 afkers and the game was a pain. In the second lost game, they were just better than us. Now going again to play. No more hotjoin! Ha!
(edited by Eyia Hellhide.7320)
Thank you for this thread, I’ll try to remember and follow all the advices.
About the builds, I’ve seen many posted by different PvPers and they all claim their build to be the best/ultimate/unbeatable. How to know if it’s true when even the comments usualy vary from “it’s awesome” to “it’s a crap build”?
After testing 3-4 guardian builds I chose the one that fits me best but it still needed some changes to make me feel comfortable with it. I really don’t think you can copy/paste an experienced player’s build and to expect to become as beasty as they are just like that.
Edit: some kitten accidently appeared from nowhere
(edited by Eyia Hellhide.7320)
When I bought GW2 I read about all the professions and started to hesitate between warrior and guardian. Finally I chose a guardian because it fits more my character. I’m loyal and I like to play for the team.
Norn because they look awesome. And imo to choose a human in a fantasy game is just boring. If you get me, I can play a human all day irl :P
Female because I’m a girl. Tried to play a male character in another game and didn’t feel comfortable.
Tell us how it went
Oh I will!
Now try it again as an elementalist.
mm noty
Check your settings. Find the one that says Right Click Targeting and disable it now. (NOW!!!).
Sir yes sir!
So that’s it? Some things look so easy and obvious when someone else tells you about them, and then you start to wonder why you haven’t figured out this alone…
Thank you for the tips TGSlasher, much appreciated.
Hey Corian, I’ll give a try of SoloQ tomorrow
Maybe bad matching of players skills has something to do with it also. You get matched with players far better than you so they expect you to play on their lvl. I don’t know.
Hey hey I’m not that bad
I’m a low level, but 80% of the games I’m with top stats, most kills or most points captured. When I say I’m insulted without a reason I really mean without a reason. And it’s usually by players of the opposite team, not mine.
Thank you for the advice guys, I just thought I should first play some hotjoin till I learn the maps and how to fight players from different classes before I go for soloQ or tourney games.
Thank you for your comment Poxxia, it explains alot of things.
Also what started as a small comment from competitive frustration might lead to a huge argument due to “stereotyping” the other person as the usual “raging kid” and ofc the ego pride a lot of players have.
Maybe I want too much, but competitive frustration shouldn’t be directed to the others. Blaming the others for your lost is not what I’d call the psychology of a winner.
Anyway I’m talking about offenders and bullies who attack you even on pm sometimes without you have done anything wrong. I never start these kinds of arguments you’re talking about, because when I feel I’m tempted to answer I know it’s time to switch my laptop off and to go out.
Yeah, as far as your last point goes, that’s just the essence of humanity.
I’ll refrain from making generalizations
Just it was a bit unexpected, because when started to play I was surprised to find in this game so friendly and mature community.
Then I joined a guild which is a bunch of nice and helpful people.
Then i watched some PvP vids and they were like come and try it, don’t be afraid, it’s fun.
Then I started to PvP…
So hello from a new PvPer. I started to play GW2 2 months ago and then 10 days ago I decided to see what PvP is and I fall in love. Last 10 days this is all I do in the game and I’m afraid I’m addicted. I’ve played 220 games so far and I’m rank 13. I really enjoy PvP but it was impossible not to notice some things that are wrong and when I see something wrong I can’t be silent. This is the most competitive part of the game and you can’t really compete if you’re not offered equal chances to win.
1. Balance. Or more rightly the lack of it. In my opinion this is the main problem. Even 1 player more gives their team a big advantage, and I almost never play with equal teams. This leads to frustration in both of the teams because the losing team knows they could be winners if the teams were equal and the winning team knows their win is not decent because the game has not been fair.
The “autobalance” thing is a joke. Yesterday happened the opposite team to have 2 more players for a while and the message about autobalance appeared. They already had 150 points more. Sending one player to us couldn’t change anything. First, to be a real autobalance they should send 2 players to our team for the same time the opposite team has had 2 players more, right? All they do is to make the teams equal now but this can’t cancel the unfair advantage of the other team. And second, of course the sent to us player left immediately the game and we ended up with 1 player less. 500-240 gf
2.Targeting system – something is very wrong here. It’s hard enough to target for example necro or ranger, but even if you ménage to do it, if you dodge an attack or they do it you just lose the target and find yourself hitting a pet. In the previous game I played, you could right-click target someone and it was far easier. There were right-click options “Follow, Attack and Report” with the name of the player. And you were keeping them targeted till one of you both is dead. Here it’s a mess. Especially when both teams fight for a point and there is a bunch of pets and summons.
3. The minimap – I don’t know what exactly happened but it was okay before and now I can’t understand anything. I always run to the opposite to where I want to go, the minimap looks absolutely useless at the moment.
4. Working for the team is not awarded, if you want to have top stats you should play selfish – for example if you stay all the game to protect your teammate who is using the skyhammer at the end you’ll have less points. It will be okay if your teammates know what you’re doing and why, but there is no communication between the teammates, there is no way for such a communication and it’s not right. “Last chance to nail down your strategy” what a joke!
First games I was running a team support build and I was suffering with my points and my effectiveness. Because looks like not too many players know the bonus to fight near a guardian and run around and away from me and all my awesome support effects go for nothing. Not to mention I’ve seen people trying to dodge my healing breeze. So I made a more selfish build and I’m better now but I feel I don’t use the full potential of my guardian.
5. The community – this is the last point of my list but one of the main reasons why PvP community is so small when PvP games are so awesome. Because not everyone can bear to be bullied and insulted for no reason from people who have nothing but mightier pixels.
I remember one of my first games when I had almost no idea what to do (well I watched some vids before I start), I jumped on a point, contested it and then a message appeared “defend the point”. I decided my holy duty is to defend this point with the cost of my life. So all the game was standing there, killing the players who was comming to take it from me 1 by 1 and keeping it for my team. We won the game and felt so proud! Then I saw I have less points than anyone else and read a comment in the chat box “The noob is farming for glory”. And I didn’t even know what glory is and why I’d need it. Now I know what glory is and I know I absolutely don’t need it.
These 10 days I’m PvPing I was called a noob, kitten, loser, idiot etc for a first time in my life. If I was a bit more emotional I’d left so far. Seriously people what’s wrong with you? This is a game, relax, have fun. Your opponent in this game may happen to be your teammate next game, don’t hate them. Your aggression hurts people who don’t deserve it and if you can’t control it, I’d say it hurts people who are more decent than you.
Even more, unlike PvE and WvW community, this here is just devided. It’s called PvP but all I see is: high ranks vs low ranks, hot join players vs tourney players, skyhammer haters vs skyhummer lovers and so on. If you can’t be united as a community don’t wonder why Ante doesn’t take you seriously.
Hey again Vixx, I tried to pm you, but some spam control stopped me.
Yesterday joined a guild on Gandara, called Alliance of Shadows, but looks like I’m too noobish for them, and nobody even tried to talk with me, so I don’t know if to stay. Anyway I’ll let you know if I find a decent guild or decide to move to another server.
Add me in game please.
Hey Hagop, now I think I’ll give your guild a try
Thank you for your time Falunel, I think I already got the picture. My problems are:
- All the guilds I’d like to join turned out to be on American servers
- I like the PvP aspect of the game most and I will want to war with my mates in all the wars, including WvW
- I don’t want to delete my character, maybe this sounds weird but I started somehow to identify with her and we together leveled up to level 14 for 3 days.
So I guess I will transfer just need to decide where exactly. Anyway thank you again and I added you as a friend if you don’t mind
Thank you all for the invitations, but it’s hard to decide now because looks like I have chosen a wrong server to play and now I need to pay for transfer. So I’ll chose wisely my guild to be sure I’ll pay for this only once.
Thank you
I even tried to tell it in game but it said you’re not online.
Aww
Tried to deal with the chat box and totally messed it up. Now I can’t even see NPCs talking
Level 11 now btw…
It’s Blacktide.
And hey Vixx, good to know I’m not the only one.
