Discrimination? (Non-English chat language)

Once again: Speaking in a language other than the preponderant language on a server is not a breach of the User Agreement, the Rules of Conduct, or the rules of common sense. We don’t take action on it, and ask that you please not report players using alternative languages. You may, however, report players who are harassing other players through insistence that they conform to the use of a certain language.

Discrimination? (Non-English chat language)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Anyone getting upset about languages needs to understand that…

the guy speaking that other language isn’t speaking to you.
the client filter and block function are there for you to use.
many people cannot speak any other language than their own.
and last, complaining in map chat about people using any other language will get you blocked and reported.

Anet have said repeatedly that no language is mandatory on any server.

This is accurate. I don’t know that someone would actively report another player for saying “Use [language] in chat!” but they might. And depending on the aggression of the statement, that rude player might be given an infraction, it’s true. I suggest that if you feel strongly about not seeing another language, simply make your personal choice (as above) and move on, without making anyone else feel bad and without stirring the pot.

On the other hand, I’m not sure I’d call this linguistic or cultural discrimination so much as I’d call it the behavior of someone who is not being very pleasant or reasonable.

My work gives recognition rewards in the form of gift-cards, and I used to always use them on amazon to buy gem-cards.

However, my last order on amazon.com last month said that they were out of stock, and they still haven’t received any.

Since this is the only way I justify buying gems and I wanted to get some before the next living story content comes out, can someone please look into why amazon.com no longer has the gem-cards available?

I will see if I can find out anything about this. It could be simply that Amazon needs to order more cards to sell, but I’ll check.

As suggested early on in this post, the forums community will not be able to answer such a question. If you truly want to know about your account situation, please submit a ticket.

As a general reminder, posting this sort of “I got banned” commentary is not a valuable forum contribution, and in fact it is not uncommon for a forum-based plea of innocence to be found, upon investigation, to be entirely without merit. I make no judgement on this thread, but again (1) these sorts of posts are without value and (2) only CS can answer about an account issue, and only then in a support ticket that the player submits.

Does ANET forcefully disband Guilds?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Submitting a support ticket is the only practical way to get information on this incident, as posting in the forums does not put you in touch with those most familiar with the incident, that is, those charged with enforcing the UA, RoC, Naming Policy, and so forth.

According to CS, players should be aware — this has been communicated publicly — that they currently do not have a tool that allows them to change a guild tag. Therefore, if one is found to be offensive, the only option is to disband the guild. Longevity of use is no guarantee of continued use. This means if someone chooses an offensive character or guild name, or an offensive tag — in this case [FART] — it is irrelevant how long they use that name or tag, and action is taken as appropriate, when reported or observed. The key is to choose names with an eye to the Naming Policy and general standards, and not tread so close to the line that action is required.

I agree with you, it’s sort of wacky to be able to purchase when you cannot use it, trade it, sell it, give it away, etc.. But on the other hand, I don’t see a store telling me “You cannot buy more shoes, you don’t have room in your closet!” (Ok, ok, I’m just kidding there. )

As BG said, a quick ticket to CS will get you a refund. I see your point about the system simply preventing the purchase, though, so I’ll pass along the idea. (Keep in mind, it could be much more complicated to program such a “cap” than it might appear, but it can’t hurt to ask about it.)

I think the point of her doing that was to make sure those who haven’t been following the thread closely know that there is some dev interaction/acknowledgement on the subject.

Yes!

Gaile’s comment makes it sound like the idea all along was that horizontal progression applied to those leveling – rather than at end game. That bothers me A LOT.

Perhaps you mean Jon’s comments? For I said nothing whatsoever about progression, horizontal or otherwise. Just want to make sure you didn’t read something into my words that reference leveling, progression, or anything of that sort.

~~~
Anyway, thanks for the input added today. And I mean that, especially because I recognize some of you are irritated and would like to post like that one guy who shouted!
The reason I re-posted Jon’s comments involves some level of confession: I saw this huge thread in the forums, kept reading across many sub-forums and posts that ArenaNet was being asked to provide some sort of response, wanted to get you some info (although I knew it wouldn’t be much at this point), sent an e-mail to some devs to ask about how we could respond, then met up with Jon who pointed out that he’d put up a pretty comprehensive post … that I had completely missed.
If I missed it, maybe someone late to the thread missed it, so hence the repeat or re-post. Not to say “share your ideas” if you already have! Not to give a placating “there there” or meaningless non-update. But because I honestly felt that some forum member may have missed the update and input request from the dev team and they may want to provide new feedback.
So you guys who posted last month or two weeks ago or when the thread started? You’re good. Got it, thank you, and really, thank you again if you patiently re-posted today. To you folks who are saying “You need to update that thread,” please note that right now, the only update we have available in the one that was offered – in detail and at length – when Jon last posted. He or another team member will update when they have more info, but do know this thread was and continues to be useful.
Game Updates: Traits
This thread is very large and has a lot of great feedback and input within it. But because it’s so long, some participants may have missed a very informative post by Game Design Lead Jon Peters.
To help you help us with a topic that the devs feel is very valuable, I’ll repeat Jon’s post:
Hey all,
I see a lot of people talking but with a thread this long the details are often muddied by a large number of similar but differing opinions. I want to address some of the more straightforward stuff.
Trait Tier level increase. We made this change because despite what the more hardcore players like myself want, most players need to be introduced to systems more slowly so that they don’t get lost. Every time we overwhelm new players that is an opportunity for them to stop playing the game. Every time that happens it becomes harder and harder for new players to develop into longtime players. Without more longtime players it becomes hard for you and your current guilds to meet and find people to replace those who inevitably will be pulled away by real life from time to time.
Unlocking traits. We talked about this a bunch in the horizontal progression CDI and it came to our attention that many players were not learning about traits, how they worked, or understanding the options. When we talked through unlocking traits via activities it led us in the direction we have currently. Unfortunately, unlocking traits in the open world generally causes one of the #1 things we never wanted in the game which is players in conflict. You want might the Balthazar trait but someone is about to complete the chain and leave you waiting. This is bad for the game, but I think right now only occurs this dramatically for a few of the traits.
If you all list out the most offensive ones here we would be happy to look into changes given that we have already done so in the past when we switch many of the poorly placed map complete adept tier traits among a few other changes. Here is a list of those changes:
Profession Trait 13: This trait is now awarded upon preventing the Statue of Lyssa from being re-taken by the Risen, as well as defeating the corrupted high priestess of Lyssa.
Precision Adept Trait 5: This trait has been moved from Bloodtide Coast map completion to the defeat of Sharky the Destroyer in Arca Lake of the Harathi Hinterlands.
Precision Adept Trait 6: This trait has been moved from Fireheart Rise map completion, to the defeat of Captain Jayne in the Brigantine Isles of the Gendarran Fields.
Toughness Adept Trait 6: This trait has been moved from Iron Marches map completion, to the defeat of the Giant Blood Ooze in the Challdar Gorges of the Bloodtide Coast.
Vitality Adept Trait 5: This trait has been moved from Timberline Falls map completion, to the defeat of Gargantula, the spider broodmother in the Wynchona Woods of Harathi Hinterlands.
Vitality Adept Trait 6: This trait has been moved from Mount Maelstrom Map Completion, to the defeat of the Krait Witch in Timberline Falls.
Profession line Adept Trait 5: This trait has been moved from Sparkfly Fen map completion, to the defeat of the Champion Ice Wurm in Lornar’s Pass.
Profession line Adept Trait 6: This trait has been moved from Frostgorge Sound map completion, to the defeat of Lord Ignius the Eternal of Lornar’s Pass.
At the end of the day this system has helped spread out the teaching of the system and the feeling of accomplishment through acquisition, but it has done it in ways that are sometimes counterproductive and still not nearly visible enough to impact as many players as it could.
Guild Wars 2 is a game that is going to continue to evolve and it will be because of your feedback and our efforts so do not get discouraged from posting feedback and be patient with change and I hope we will reward that patience.
TLDR;
We added this system as a direct result from the horizontal progression CDI. We are always reading your feedback, however, we don’t always have time to respond right away or action it quickly. We updated some trait unlocks in the past but we can do more. How can you help?
1) Give us a list of the most offensive trait unlock locations.
2) Keep giving feedback and be patient as this is a big ship and it takes time to steer it.
~~~~~

Jon also wrote later than he would need to be a bit less active on the forums but he explained that this meant he was actively working on making the game better.

So as Jon asked, please keep your feedback coming with our thanks for your efforts to also make the game better! Please note that as Jon points out, changing systems or making adjustments takes time and careful review, but you are being heard and your input is valuable to us.

Hi adozu.

I understand your concerns and have actually expressed similar thoughts in the past. However, there are valid reasons to allow the use of the word, such as Proud Cancer Survivor; Fundraising for Childhood Cancer; Breast Cancer Awareness; and many others.

I really dislike the fact we have to filter perfectly reasonable words, but in some cases, we do because they are misused so often. I spoke with a member of my team about “cancer” and we’ve made a modest change to the filter that may censor the more objectionable uses. If we find that misuse is rampant we’ll review the filter options again.

In the meantime, please do feel free to report (flag in lower right) a post in which you believe the word is used objectionably and we’ll take a look.

According to Colin Johanson, Guild Wars 2 Game Director, Super Adventure Box will be back in the future. We don’t have a timeframe for the return of the SAB, but we will be bringing back this popular content.

I know you would like more details, more info, a date, etc., but that’s not available right now. I hope the above comment reassures you, though, because at the core, the important answer is that yes, SAB will be back in the future.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Meh, there’s gotta be one in every bunch, eh?

If you’re serious, and I can’t really tell, I’d just say that every bit of news is viewed subjectively, based on its appeal to the player in question. I like buffs to Rangers — make them almiiiighty! — and you say, “No, leave them alone, handle [this other profession].” That’s ok, it’s the way things are and probably, in time, we’ll both get what we desire.

If you’re not excited about SAB, that’s ok. It’s not required playing and to each his/her own!

Guhracie — Yes, I do understand you, and I appreciate your position. I feel you make very valid points, some of them related simply to common courtesy (which is what I was thinking as I read what you wrote, and which you then said, so two minds and all that). Some want dev posts everywhere. Some, like you, have a reasonable expectation. I am truly hopeful that we’ll be moving that way and I’m doing my small part to help. (For instance, flagging a post to specific devs to see if an answer is possible. Not hourly, not every dev or every team, but selectively and, I hope, with some level of wisdom. We’ll see how that works out — I might drive ’em nuts. )

I’ve been pleased at the uptick as well! I do wish we had some more concrete comments on what’s actually coming. Not nitty gritty details, but more like “at some point we’ll have a third heavy profession” or “we do intend to open up a zone the size of Frostgorge.” And then if worst comes to worst and the coding just won’t work or whatever, you can say “We’re really sorry, but you remember how we talked about a third heavy profession? This weird thing came up that made it unplayable as designed, we have to start over when we have time.”

My sense is that many would be forgiving, but many others would not. I don’t drive the Revelation Train, but I’ve seen a “We’re going to do this… uhhh… no, never mind” scenario work out poorly for game companies, from cancelled titles to reduced features or simple delays. (Won’t name names, but I’m talking broadly, not specifically to Guild Wars/Guild Wars 2 or ArenaNet.)

I Think something like this would be appreciated.

Lots of posts, but I’m sure this thread has served its purpose and was answered back months… well, ok, days ago.

Do mass reports work? No.
Could someone get suspended for fake reports? Yes.
Could a group get nabbed for intentional griefing through false reports? Yes.
Do you guarantee you’ll nab each and every person or group submitting a false or mob report? Probably not.

Bottom line: Report reasonable, play reasonably, and all is well.

Arena net has some of the worst communication out of any game company I can think of. When they’re not giving crappy non-answers and ignoring problems, they’re outright lying to the playerbase.

you really wont see a change in communication. Josh foreman got yelled at for communicating TOO MUCH. Even if anyone at anet WANTED to communicate, they wont be able to because the higher ups deemed it bad for business.

I’ve only been around for a few months, but in that time, I’ve seen them not only make an effort to communicate more, but Gaile now has the title “ArenaNet Forum Communications Team Lead” and has been posting in several threads.

If that’s non-answers and outright lying, then consider me fully duped.

Duping!!?! ~gasp!~ Oh, sorry, different type, gotcha.

Things aren’t going to change overnight, but we are making a concerted effort to improve communications. Not every thread gets — or realistically can get — a reply. That is driven not so much by a particular topic but more critically by sheer volume. And yes, not every question can be answered, but maybe it just can’t be answered in the short term, or maybe it’s taken under consideration for a more focused means of communication, such as a CDI, or maybe you’ll see an answer in the Update Notes. And sure, I guess some questions will go unanswered, too, but not for lack of effort or interest.

The truth is, you’re noticing, or I hope you’re noticing: We’re actively taking steps to be more communicative and involved, and we’ll continue to do so as time passes.

Players mass-reporting other players

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

You can rest assured, if 100 players report Fred, but Fred’s not doing anything wrong, he’s going to be just fine. The 100 false reporters? Not so fine, if they start abusing the report system. (And we may not use the exact message as expressed above, but that’s pretty much how it works. )

I remember a livestream months ago (maybe half a year or so) where someone did a fake giveaway of a legendary (he did the drawing off camera and a friend of him won) – people got upset and massreported him, around 500 people where watching. On stream you could see 3-4 min after people started to report him he was kicked out of the game, he tried to log in again but he got a error massage, that he was banned – but he did nothing wrong ingame, it was only on twitch.
(Don’t ask who he was, I was only watching it because of the giveaway xD)

Yes, I am not entirely convinced mass reporting does nothing.

I don’t have enough information to answer your claims substantially. Things like exact character name, date, time and time zone, server, etc. Right now, and no offense intended, it’s a rather vague “I saw this thing happen” story and nothing more. Maybe the player was reported and, based on his in-game activities and not the out-of-game prize distribution, he earned himself a suspension or a termination. Maybe this is one of those urban legends, where everyone knows someone who knows someone to whom something happened, but no evidence exists that anything happened at all.

I don’t know about the story.

What I do know is this: There is no numeric bar or magic number after which someone is automatically “banned.” Each report goes into a flowing report system, and every report is reviewed individually. If an agent saw 100 reports of a player in the same hour, s/he would probably review several times, but not each of 100 times. Because after a few reviews it would be pretty clear if there was an actionable offense or if some report abuse was going on. (And you know what? Game logs would confirm a case of requested spam reporting.)

I talked to the lead of the CS team today to ask how we monitor flooded reports, and he’s going to get some data on that. But the outcome of someone reporting 100 players once each, or one player 100 times is the same: The player is reviewed and is actioned only based on his or her breach of the UA or the RoC, and not as a result of crowd request.

Vote kick must exist. Too many people would abuse it by going afk or otherwise being a jerk on purpose. What they need to do is make it majority and require 3 votes. Whoever decided it would only take two probably should have thought about it a little harder xD.

I’m curious if the others in this thread also agree that 3 votes would make the system equally effective (for yes, it seems vote kick must exist, as Woljnir says) but perhaps less arbitrary.

Or would 3 bring a whole new set of challenges?

Ok, let’s all take a deep breath here.

First, the thread has become a bit off topic, with its many “I don’t like your style” comments. Let’s keep in mind that this is a discussion forum, and that means you’re going to see a lot of opinions, not all of which will be identical or even close to your own. That’s ok. That’s actually good. A conversation gains from a wide variety of opinions and input.

We can do better if we:

  • Share our opinions as opinions, and not as absolute fact.
  • Focus on the post, and not the poster. That is, consider the content of what someone says and don’t dismiss it simply because you have a certain mindset about another forum member.
  • Stay on topic.

And now, assuredly on topic to the theme of this thread ~ahem~ someone asked about the CDI and it’s now in Phase 2 and we invite you to add your thoughts!

I’d also like to hear Anet’s input. Is this true – do you ban players just because dozens/hundreds of other players report them?

Nope. You can rest assured, if 100 players report Fred, but Fred’s not doing anything wrong, he’s going to be just fine. The 100 false reporters? Not so fine, if they start abusing the report system. (And we may not use the exact message as expressed above, but that’s pretty much how it works. )

That bit that someone said in the OP’s screenshot about “1,000 posts and the player is auto-banned” is ridiculously untrue.

What category do you think these people are choosing? Here are the categories:

  • Botting
  • Inappropriate Character Name
  • Spamming
  • Verbal Abuse
  • Scamming
  • Selling Gold
  • LFG System Abuse.

I will check with CS to see if there’s a trend of false reporting, and ask them if they may want to increase tracking reporting players to check for signs of abuse.

Thanks for this discussion. It’s good to be able to set the record straight.

EDIT: We’ve removed the hosted image, as it contained the names of players and forum policy prohibits “naming and shaming” in posts or in screenshots.

Exeon — thanks for expressing yourself constructively.

Crash — I’m asking about that thread. I know it’s huge, and believe me, I hear you (and a thousand other forum members ) loud and clear. I don’t have an answer for you on that subject, but I know you’d like to know more about the status of that thread, if nothing else.

DDCarvalho — Those are very practical suggestions. Thanks!

Melvin — I like that idea of an “immersive solution” very much!

Why can’t the survey be something like
on a scale of 1-5 how happy are you with XXXX
out of these 5 things which was your most liked
out of these 5 things which was your least liked
please rate these 5 items in order of most liked to least liked
on a scale of 1-5 how would you rate your experience from levels 1-5, 5-10,10-15, etc
on a scale of 1-5 how would you rate the speed at which you gain skills, the speed at which you gain traits, the speed at which you unlock the ability to do XXXX
what things would you like added to the game out of these 5
what things would you like changed out of these 5
how is your overall satisfaction with XXXX

I think some of these could help you with interpreting what your metrics are telling you. Rather than telling everyone what someone thinks or wants the metrics to tell them.

Now those are interesting ideas! That form of survey makes a lot more sense than the one requiring a answer coupled with an essay question, or the simple yes/no. A few are too vague, but overall, they have good potential. Thanks for these ideas.

I appreciate the feedback. I just wonder how such a survey could work. Most surveys are not essay questions. They’re like this:

  • Should we change [this thing]? Yes/No.

That seems unhelpful. First, things are seldom answered with just a yes or no answer. Instinct is to react, “Well, I need to know more about why you’re looking at that area,” or “That’s not as important as [these other things]” or “Yes, please change it [this way] and not [that other way].”

Or maybe you’re thinking:

  • Which of these things should we focus on? [list]

And we all know, given we’re forum members, that those opinions — about priorities or changes — could number in the dozens. Nah, probably in the hundreds.

Maybe it’s an essay question. Maybe it’s “We’re looking for feedback on [this thing]” where you can provide your thoughts in detail. If that’s the case, may I introduce you to the CDIs?

You make good points, it’s not possible for any human being to read every thread. And certainly when their job is making a game — design, programming, art, writing, and all the other facets of development — reading the forums in large amounts could take them away from their job at a cost to the game.

But if 300 Anet Team members are reading the forums, even if lightly, it starts discussion. Heck, I’ve sent notes about threads to various teams, and I know just about every other person here has done the same. Like this: “I don’t work on [such-and-such], but I found [this linked thread] really interesting.” Or maybe, “This is for your team. I think we can support it by doing [our stuff] if you are going to work on this.”

So surveys? Maybe they’ll happen, I’m not sure. Could you outline your thoughts on how they’d look? Input on something topical? CDIs are great — are you participating? Have you made a suggestion there that we have one on a topic near and dear to your heart?

Please don’t see this as a “never happen” response. I’m mostly just asking questions, that’s all.

If you’re considering how the GW2 Team can best hear your input about the game — such as what you’d like to see in the future, how things are working now, etc. — I personally don’t think a survey is necessary. Honestly and truly: These forums are a huge and very effective medium for communication. They are read daily by members of the team — probably more people than you think! — and the forums, as a whole, give us a much better view of what’s important to Guild Wars 2 players than most surveys would do.

Too we have interaction here that’s incredibly effective. Yep, I’m thinking CDIs and I’m glad they’re back! (Even if I marvel how Chris is able to keep up the pace! )

Surveys are difficult to devise in a way that makes them unbiased and statistically accurate. That’s not to say it cannot be done, and the idea of surveys linked to an active game account certainly sounds better to me than those random Internet surveys, like “Who’s your favorite singer,” which get gamed through fan groups, artist management companies, publicists, agents, and the use of “ballot-box stuffing” methods, like vote, clear cache, vote again; vote, change computers, vote again; vote, set up 100 fake e-mail accounts, vote again.

Anyway, just wanted to add a couple of pennies about the subject, fwiw.

Hey Ic — did you post this in Bugs? I really think that’s where it needs to go. There may be a thread, or you might want to make a new one, but I’d really appreciate if you get this on record (if it’s still an issue, given we’ve had several builds since the 12th. )

Interesting question. We might hear from one of our sound team on this subject, if they have time to answer. (No promises but it’s possible. )

Personally, I would have trouble finding any old information if this thread were in any way locked or changed, especially since the search function on these forums doesn’t always work right.

I think it would be very confusing for many people if they can’t find information due to the thread being changed.

I think this thread should stay the same.

I take this on board, and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

The last thing I want to do is to deflect or throttle discussion because as I said, this is a a really great thread. Given the… umm… “less-than-stellar quality” of our search engine, I agree we should just leave it be.

You folks update this if you’re finding “Haaalp, it crashes my computer!”

Ok, back to the General Dungeon Discussion…

Every single major update has several changes not mentioned in the update notes though.

Yes, and I’m asking about that. I’m not new to ArenaNet, but I’m rather new to having greater Update Note visibility, and I’d like to understand things better.

I checked with the developer and yes, that was part of the September 22nd build. I don’t know that I should go into published notes and add a string about that, but you are right, it was added on that date (and I agree, it’s a positive that I would have loved our players to see. )

I’m sorry that happened, Imp. You can transfer for free (if you delete your characters, which might be ok for a new player — see the linked article) but there is that cooldown period, and we don’t have the ability to reduce it.

Hey! You could guest on a few servers and find the one you want to move to, then be ready to pounce when the option arises!

Just a quick note: Please don’t swear. The filter caught it, and it’s fine, but best to not go even with the mild swearing or, if you see a “kitten” change the word to something else. Again, no biggie, just wanted to mention.

That’s good feedback, Jerus. I sense that you haven’t had slow load times, which is good to know.

I will leave it be and check back for feedback in a day or so. If it’s “Please put me out of my misery and split the thread11!11” I’ll do so. Otherwise, it seems just grand as it is.

I wasn’t aware that this happened, Charrbeque. (Dang I <3 that name!)

As you know, we pride ourselves on having very detailed update notes; it’s part of the transparency policy we try to exhibit across the board. But sometimes there are so many working parts — or working teams — that something gets missed in the notes.

I just talked to two folks in QA and with some team members who work on the Trading Post. This is a new element, as you pointed out, but I don’t know precisely when it was implemented.

Thanks for posting to make us aware that we might want to add to the notes, and thanks for your positive reaction to the change!
