Feedback on ascended armor vs exotic

in Thief

Posted by: Galandil.9641

Galandil.9641

Simple answer: don’t go for ascended armor, it’s not worth it.

Some numbers to back the claim.

1) The gain in stats is absolutely absymal – the primary stat gets boosted by +14, while the secondaries by +11 (for a full set armor, ofc). This means that, on a naked toon (i.e.: just the armor equipped and nothing else, not even traited), the primary stat gets boosted by a mere 1.14% (from 1231 to 1245), the secondaries by 0.96% (from 1140 to 1151). If you start to add weapons/trinkets/traits at the picture, the gain % in stat is just… well, I said it, absymal.

2) The gain in armor rating: absymal too. If you have a toon which doesn’t use Though anywhere on the equip (which is your case, except for the 300 in SA trait line), you go from 1980 armor to 2034, +54, which is a +2.72% boost in the armor rating. If you add the 300 thougness coming from the SA line, you go from 2280 to 2334, so a gain of +2.37%.

Now, if you compare the cost of a full ascended armor to its effectiveness, you can easily see that it’s not worth it. First of all, for the price in itself, second of all because when you put runes in it you know that they’ll be “lost forever” if you want to change them in the future (no one will ever salvage an asc armor just to get back the runes).
And about the cost: just the cost of damask to make the 6 insignias required is about 18×14.5g=261g. Throw in the rest of mats, and you’ll spend at least 400-500g to make a full asc armor set (if anyone wants to chime in with the exact cost atm, pls do ).

So, tldr: stick with exotic armors, and just get ascended trinkets/weapons.

Traits with triggers: from passive to active

in Thief

Posted by: Galandil.9641

Galandil.9641

We have currently 4 traits that activate when a certain threshold of health is hit.

Pain response: useful in theory, in practice most of the times it just goes on CD giving only the regen buff and maybe removing one of the 3 conditions.
Hard to Catch: random teleport at random moments, bad since day one.
Last Refuge: we all know about this too.
Instinctual Response: no one has ever used it I think, and for good reasons.

Now, why can’t we have the activation of these traits decided by the player? It’d be a lot better, it’d promote more active gameplay (not just relying on passive abilities which procs nmw), and there’d be not a lot of work to do.

3 of them can just be binded on a specific key (let’s call them F2-F4), and their effects remain the same as they’re now: as soon as the trigger is hit, the skill is usable by the player, and, if used, it goes on cooldown (the duration is the one of the trait). If the skill is not used, and the health goes again over the threshold for any reason, the skill isn’t available anymore (but doesn’t go on CD).

The other trait which maybe should allow us for some more control is Hard to Catch obviously: just make it a ground target, instead of being ported in a random place.

We could maybe have another restriction, in order not to “save” the trait skills for too long, i.e. a window of use of 4-5 seconds, after which the skill is disabled, it doesn’t go on CD but it’s not usable until the trigger is activated again (so we need to go up over the threshold and then down again to have it usable).

I think this modification would make those 4 traits much more useful than they’re now, and mostly less a liability than anything else (Last Refuge, I’m looking at you!).

This is what happens when you play SoloQ and Hotjoin instead of TeamPvP with voice chat for proper team coordination.

Nah, yesterday I lost a match for the same reason: Khylo, we were up of about 10 points, 475-465 (something like that), we had mid and home, I shouted in caps in team chat “just defend home and mid”.

After 10 seconds, I got zerged at mid by 3 enemies, and I was alone. We lost the game 501-500 lol.

Leavers in soloq - enough is enough

Galandil.9641

spoiler alert: this is a half-rant, with a proposal at the end. You can skip the rant and go straight at the proposal. Or read the rant the same, just to have a good laugh at me.

Start of rant

T’was a beautiful day in the Heart of the Mist for me today.

Not a single time I had to play on Failhammer.

Oh, the joy.

I was so happy about that, that I didn’t care too much when I lost a match.

I was so happy about that, that I didn’t care when I died three times due to 2-years-old-now immobilize bug.

I was so happy about that, that I didn’t care when I got stuck twice, during two different matches, in the wall between the stairs and the graveyard in Foefire, forcing me to logout and login during the match.

I was so happy, like a kid that, for the first time, it’s tall enough to look at all those ice cream in the trays behind the counter without the help of anyone else.

But all good things come to an end. And in the utmost and unbearable form of the LEAVER.

The first time, I just shrugged – “it happens”, I said to myself. Not knowing what would happen next match.

Another leaver. “Oh, well, bad luck I suppose”, I said to myself. Always the nice guy, I was.

And then, again for the 3rd time in a row. “Mhmhmh, well, 3 times in a row it’s really annoying, maybe the streak of bad luck will stop here”. So naive.

Because the unspoken horror never warns you before revealing itself in front of your eyes. But when it does, oh, the HORROR. Gazing at Azathot and Nyarlatothep having wild sex, surrounded by the chaos flautists playing and dancing their obscene tunes, would have been better for my mental sanity.

4th match, leaver.
5th match, 2 leavers.
6th match, leaver.
7th match, leaver.

In a row. My mouse hit the wall, the keyboard was swung like a Guardian swings his greatsword during a Whirling Wrath. All of which, I did in mystic silence.

Leavers, I hope you implode in a cloud of confetti.

End of rant

And now, the proposal:

Anet, do you know of the existance of a very simple idea called “team balancing”? It’s used even in small games (community wise) like Natural Selection 2. It’s so simple it’s mindblowing: when a team has 1 less player than the opposite team, when one player of the opposite team gets killed, he doesn’t respawn, he stays frozen in a limbo, waiting for another player of his/her team to get killed so he can respawn (thus, creating a simple respawn queue).

Why, in a game mode which is supposed to be played by single players (so with no control at all, even future retaliation, against leavers), isn’t this active yet?

Team comp doesn’t matter, it’s already random at the start. So if you keep a single player waiting for the respawn, you don’t unbalance anything in the game, indeed you give the team that had the leaver the possibility to try and win the game.

Really, is that hard? For a game that wants to be an “e-sport”?

Or maybe we just misunderstood what you meant as e-sport: except-sport.

Why the hate against WvW roamers in spvp?

in PvP

Posted by: Galandil.9641

Galandil.9641

Another thing that hasn’t been mentioned in this thread: knowing how to “play” properly downed state when in a 2vs2 (or more).

I saw a lot of good WvW roaming type players failing in playing the downed state, for example when you’re in a 2vs2 on a point and the teammate + one of the enemy is down – most of the times the result is that the teammate is killed and the enemy is rallied. They lack the knowledge when to stomp the enemy instead of rezzing the teammate (or viceversa), based on classes downed/still up, the hp of the enemy still up etc.

And this is another thing that makes a huge difference between helping your team or letting them down.

Where to get wool/cotton/linen scraps?

in Crafting

Galandil.9641

Not very much, it’s difficult to get wool/cotton/linen, and the TP prices reflect that.

One of the fastest way to get linen (or money by selling it if you don’t need it) it’s this: go to Lionscout Tunnira ( http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Lionscout_Tunnira ) in Bloodtide Coast, just outside the portal from LA; buy from her the Cloth Footguards (in multiples of 4), then throw them in the mystic toilet, you’ll get back cloth items that you can salvage for linen (and sometimes cotton, albeit it’s very rare). This method is really fast as to get linen, the only “downside” is that you need to spend karma to buy the footguards from the NPC, so you’ll need to spend quite some karma on it.

Idea: Commander WvW rank shown on UI DOT.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Galandil.9641

Galandil.9641

I have already covered this in my former post. I explicitly stated that it will be hard to tell those ranks apart and then it will at that point come down to skill.

I explicitly stated that even in the worst case scenario under my system it will still give certainty enough to filter out the complete newbs that won’t know what they are doing. (ie rank 10)

And are you telling me that you can’t tell that a newbie/troll comm with rank 10-20 is such by just following him/her for more than 5 minutes? They won’t have knowledge of the maps, siege equip, what to use/when, etc, even the routes that they use will be a fast indicator of his competence (or lack of).

And your proposal will create more unnecessary elitism, in a perverted form: most people will follow brainlessly the highest ranked comm most of the time – and we all know that, apart from very few cases, EotM comms will have higher ranks than regular WvW comms.

So, in order to avoid a newbie comm with rank 50-, you’d create a much bigger problem. And due to the actual state of WvW on most tiers (except T1 and maybe T2), we need new commanders with not-so-high ranks (i.e. 100+) that are willing to learn, with the help of more experienced players (there’s no shame in tagging up and being helped by players that are following the tag).

Idea: Commander WvW rank shown on UI DOT.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Galandil.9641

Galandil.9641

Your argument still doesn’t work since even in the worst case scenario (eotm farmer) someone with a ton of points earned that way will still be a better com than someone with like 10 rank points. (ie someone who’s completely new) This is because they’d still have more knowledge of how various siege machines or zerg battles work than someone completely new.

So even in the worst case scenario my idea would still work as a filter.

Not at all. The problem is not comparing a Rank 10 with a Rank 1000, the problem is comparing a Rank 500 (made only in EotM) to a Rank 250 (made only in WvW). The latter will have, on average, a much better understanding on how to command in WvW compared to the former.

Question about backstabbing...

in Thief

Posted by: Galandil.9641

Galandil.9641

Just two tips.

1) Remember that you can backstab even by flanking the enemy (no need to be exactly behind, just not in the 90° arc in front of the target);

2) Do it over and over, with experience you’ll learn how to position yourself quickly at least on the flank of the target.

and please don’t forget there’s a cap of 5 stacks at a time for most duration conditions, 3 for immobilize (IIRC). so if your whole team uses devourer venom at once on the same guy, you just wasted your venoms.

The cap is 9 stacks atm for duration conditions, except immobilize which has just a cap of 3 as you correctly pointed out.

But apart from this, I agree with everything you said – imo a venom share thief in party is, most of the time, a subpar choice if compared to other builds (thief or not), with the most notable problem being the inability to avoid focus from the enemy party.

Yep and the top guilds 1-100 had ways of showing exclusivity by just pvping as well. Trimmed capes…..Gold, silver and bronze.

My main point is that rewards (of any kind) should be consequent (and only consequent) to a well designed ladder system. If we don’t have the latter, it will always be a mess, with bad matchmaking (no one has fun in steamrolling/being steamrolled when paired to a team which is far away in points from his/her).

Trying to address a team ladder with personal scores is always bad, so we should have a teamQ with a ladder, with positions tied to guilds, and soloQ with scores based on single characters.

It wasn’t that hard to gather a group of 8 players in GW1, why should be a problem to gather only 5 players in GW2 to enter a teamQ match?

We didn’t have that many rewards, even for the top teams, but all players were playing just for the sake of playing and trying to climb the ladder. And top teams were playing a lot the same (War Machine, Last Pride, Idiot Savants, Reno, and a lot that I’m forgetting at the moment).

So: ladder, ladder, ladder.

What do you mean by “how is this new feature used”? There’s not a how, it’s pretty binary: you use it, or you don’t. So it is just a “how much is it used”. And I’ll bet it will be close to 100%.

And, apart from this, who cares how much (only) teamq will use the feature? This has been asked since a lot by so many (not only teamq) players that it’s astonishing and appalling that you will let the soloq players wait for its implementation more time.

SoloQueue is almost like RA was in GW1. I don’t get where you expect pro teams to be randomly assembled.

Pretty much this.

Want a more skilled/less random environment in which to play? Gather 4 friends and go tPvP.

Or stick to soloQ and try to teach new players how to play. The usual “go before in HJ” excuse isn’t of any help, since in HJ you really almost never learn anything about the game mode (with all the stacking/spectating kitten going on).
So being silent all the game, while seeing other n00b teammates moving randomly on the map and then just saying after the game is lost “l2p” it’s of no use – if someone wants to learn to play he needs to go soloQ.

S/D Destroyed

in Thief

Posted by: Galandil.9641

Galandil.9641

I can understand what anet is trying to address: the 100% probability of hitting (at a cost of 5 ini) with the highest damaging (+boon stealing) skill in the S/D set. Imo it’s not really at all a problem related to the amount of evades that we get from S/D + Acro.

I can understand less how they’re addressing it (as usual with anet). The solution should have been this:

- Ini cost of FS+LS: same as now.
- FS: it opens no matter what the LS, as it is now.
- LS: leave it as it is now, but remove the unblockable part of the skill (or maybe lessen the ini cost to 1 instead of 2).

I say this because FS is a kitten long and telegraphed skill, which can blocked/dodged very easily, so I can see Amo point regarding the fact that S/D dps will get down the drain against almost everyone.

Sure, with the actual proposed change, we’ll have more dodge uptime, but even on a cap point in the end we’ll have ini problems and with a lot less damage done on the other player, and this is bad, since evading a lot but not putting pressure (as in: make damage) will let us give the cap to the oppo.

Galandil has an excellent point as asurans just use human male armor models.

I wasn’t even thinking about armor models.

My point is that, at least in PvP, we should have a simple option to scrap away all that shiny/glittering/fashion stuff for enemy models. It’s PvP, not Fashion vs Fashion mode.

A game that now is 15 years old like Q3 made you choose via a config file which model you’d want to see for enemy models (Keel/TankJr with green acid color ftw!) and which model for friend models. I’m astonished that this game doesn’t give us that option yet.

This should a competitive environment, so everything should be done in order to help players enjoy the gameplay, not let them lose some diopters in order to understand wtf is doing that little asura.

A simple solution to this problem (and I say this as a player having the main character as Asura) is to put an option in the game that lets you load standardized human models for all the other characters in the match instead of the actual ones.

And I wonder why after almost 2 years Anet never put this option out for PvP.

The goal was to better allow selection over/behind people’s heads and selecting people on geometry like bridges. The change was very slight though, so I doubt it would impact your experience.
If you’ve been away for extra long, there’s a new option to disable right-click interact which helps prevent deselects.

The problem is not in deselecting targets with right click.

The problem is selecting target with left-click which sometimes doesn’t simply work at all, we need to click twice moving the pointer in a slightly different position on the target model to get the target. And moving the pointer horizontally does the trick, so I don’t think that it’s caused by a vertical selection problem.

In PvE it’s not really a problem, since targets are almost always static, but in WvW/PvP it’s a major annoyance, especially when playing with classes which needs in some instances fast actions (for example, using port skills with thief in order to disengage rapidly targeting a far away enemy, etc.).
