2 character slots if I pre-purchase deluxe?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

It seems so from their wording on the last blog post.
First of all, they said that was how it was going to work on the stream where they previewed this stuff and Colin’s newest post doesn’t change that. Secondly can you people please read the dang dev blogs they have been posting over the last month?
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/updating-your-wallet/
“The conversion of skill points to spirit shards will be automatic. This will happen on a per character basis, so make sure to log in on each character to receive your total count! I think you’ll be surprised at just how many spirit shards you have.”
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/specializations-part-two-reward-tracks-and-elite-specializations/
“Old skill points in excess of those earned by leveling and skill challenges will be converted into crafting materials for the Mystic Forge. Items and activities that were previously repeatable sources of skill points will now also provide that same crafting material.”
Guess what? The crafting material was the later revealed Spirit Shard.
I read already those posts some time ago. Still, they don’t answer my SPECIFIC request, since we’re not talking neither about unspent skill points in excess nor about items like scrolls not already used.
However, I’ll see tomorrow if I get some spirit shards from the already spent scrolls from those 2 toons. If not, I’ll come back here and have a laugh at your misplaced arrogance.
No, you don’t get your skills that you unlocked with skill scrolls back. There are no official statements about refunds specifically, but chances are they will not be able to refund the skill points you made through skill scrolls, or the gold and skill points you spent on traits before the patch goes live. In essence, I recommend not spending anything tonight until after the patch hits.
Yours is a somewhat unique scenario in that you got your alts literally everything before they even hit 80. I imagine most people tend to only buy what they want to use, but if you feel like it’s not fair, then you could possibly submit a ticket in game. I don’t think there’s much that can be done, especially since the changes to hero points have been known for months now.
Of all the gripes that I have with everything HoT related, this is the less important for me, it was just a curiosity.
However, just for the sake of precision, they COULD give spirit shards, since it’s pretty trivial to calculate how many skill points have been used from scrolls to buy the skills. It’s just Total skill points spent on skills/traits (fixed costs) – skill points received up to that lvl (fixed amount) – skill points earned by skill challenges (trackable) = skill points received by scrolls. ^^
That’s fine for lvl 80 characters.
But what about other characters, not already 80, but with all the skills already unlocked via scrolls and with all the traits unlocked? I have two characters created way before the NPE, and they have all the skills/“basic” traits (i.e.: all traits except the 5 lately introduced GM) already unlocked, even if they’re both between lvls 40-50.
Do we get a refund of skill points in spirit shards, or all those skill points spent lost? And what about traits?
You’ll get hero points for each level you’ve obtained and for each world skill challenge you’ve done. You’ll get spirit shards for each scroll you’ve used.
Can you provide me some official link on the matter?
On page 1 other people are saying the exact opposite. Keep in mind that I’m not talking about a character who has unspent skill points (like my main toon), but I’m talking about a non-80 lvl char, which has all skills unlocked and 0 skill points available.
Do we get a refund of skill points in spirit shards, or are all those skill points spent lost? And what about traits?
Again, people, A.Net specifically stated that they are not supporting ANY pre-purchase from 3rd party sites yet. No announcement. No links. No seal of approval. Amazon has a ‘market’ allowing individuals and businesses to sell on the site, not just directly from Amazon. That means that illegal key sellers could potentially be on Amazon selling keys they got through stolen credit cards. If it is cheaper than this site’s game version, more than likely it was obtained that way.
Be patient and wait for official word instead of risking them locking your whole account because a fraud call on the KEY related to what you get from Amazon just to save $5-10.
Bunch of drivel. Learn to read what’s been posted before.
@soakman: my bad, didn’t see the link (that I even quoted lol).
However, when I follow the link to the official retailers (at the end of the post that you linked), if I choose United Kingdom from the drop down menu, I get only 2 retailers: Amazon and GAME. So we have the confirmation that the pre-order on Amazon.co.uk is absolutely legit.
Proof: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/retailers/#UnitedKingdom-physical
Just wanted to point out that “being sold by koch international on amazon” is not the same as “being sold by amazon”.
Amazon will be an official supplier of HoT, but Amazon are currently not offering HoT, at least not yet.
Try to learn to read what has been posted before, I pointed out before your post that the copy is dispatched and sold by Amazon.co.uk.
Sorry im UK so free delivery as im amazon prime member thats why the LOL
That’s why I said “but I live in Italy so I’m shafted”. For a UK based customer, it’s a good price and if I lived there, I’d have bought it.
There was a good time when even shipping to Italy from co.uk was free, but not anymore.
What shipping costs ? its a serial code you buy dude lol
No, apparently it’s the same as the original GW2 pre-order, you receive a cardboard box with the key code in it.
I tried the checkout before confirming the payment, and I’d pay a total of £33.82, due to higher VAT in Italy (so the price goes to £29.22) and the shipping cost of £4.60.
So “lol” less and try to inform yourself a little bit more before randomly replying. Dude.
Don’t buy the game via other places unless you get confirmation from a Dev or until other retailers have been authorized to sell the game. If you do, it looks like your entire account could be shut down for fraud, and you will need to buy it AGAIN from an authentic source to play. Is that really worth saving a few bucks?
It probably WILL come out for 3rd-parties to sell at some point, but it has NOT yet. If you don’t want to pre-purchase from ANET, HOLD ON TO YOUR MONEY.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Buying-HoT-through-a-3rd-Party-Careful
I’ve bought the original GW2 pre-order copies (3, for my household) from Amazon at the time, and didn’t have a single problem.
Moreover, it would be utterly ridicolous for Anet considering AMAZON (which is one of the most trusted, if not THE most trusted online seller in the world) an unauthorized reseller. We’re not talking about Kinguin here.
And where do you read about shutting down the whole account (even the base one), if only the HoT key is not legit? Give a link, if there’s one.
I’d buy the copies of HoT from Amazon.co.uk btw, but living in Italy the shipping costs would kill the saving on the base price.
@BrotherBelial: a mini, a skin and the guild hall thingamabob – who cares about them at THAT cost? I don’t, and I’m sure a LOT of players don’t either.
Oddly enough, on Amazon.co.uk the price is cheaper than the official one from Anet store, yet on Amazon.de and .fr the price is the same as the standard edition, €45.
@Sarie: no, all HoT copies on Amazon (uk,fr and de) are sold and dispatched directly by Amazon, so no marketplace seller involved.
Actually there was an answer to these and other questions during one of the live streams. The reply was that we who are in small guilds need to rethink what a guild is.
Can you provide a link or transcript of this part pls?
To me, it seems one of the most kittened decision ever, I’m honestly tired of things gated to “minimum of X players required” (with X > 5, the size of the party in GW2). Ofc I’m not talking about open world events, but everything else “instanced”. Not everyone likes to be in a zerg/semi-zerg guild.
Apparently, the people that do the event to claim the guild hall need to have HoT (opening the GH is done in the new zone), but then, when claimed, guild members without HoT can join the GH instance.
But in all honesty it’s not stated very clear, so we’ll need to wait and see for the details.
Guys, don’t try to argue with this coulter guy, he’s one of the most annoying whiteknight of anet. It’s just wasted time.
This is a wonderfully written article.
Every journalist that states “I think that $35, $50, and $75 for the three tiers, intact, would have made far more sense.” and then, after few words, states “But again, we’re talking about a few dollars here either way.” evidently isn’t even able to understand that from $50 to $35 there’s a HUGE difference of 30%. And that the starting price, in such a comparison, isn’t important, the important part is in the % difference.
lol theres a kittenload of complaints on A LOT of stuff but I never seen anet react this quickly to any of the other complaints like this one lol…
Remember the Commander Compendium incident?
This does make you wonder though. Of all of the information that Dragon Season and other sites have posted regarding the upcoming update, how likely are they to be taken as credible or true? They stated that ascended would be 10% better and yet Colin just said that wasn’t the case as the difference is remaining the same. So how much from those “patch notes” that hasn’t already been released by Anet is true?
Or, more likely: +10% gap → kittenload of complaints → backpedal to +5% gap.
Conversion of Ascended gear and Stat changes
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Galandil.9641
The most important part to me is that they’re leaving the gap at +5%.
Greatest backpedaling ever.
Let me state this clearly: I feel for you.
I was browsing the changes, and I read the obvious huge and NON-SENSE nerf to the heal.
To me, it’s just illogical to add a negative effect to the only skill, a heal, that should NOT have any negative effects at all. And on top of that, it’s even a huge negative one, 10 vuln stacks for 4 seconds are really just plain stupid.
If they wanted to nerf, they could have done a lot of different things: increase the CD (oops, they did it too), lower the amount healed (base and/or per condition), lower the amount of conditions consumed (3-4-whatever number), lock the conditions cured to just some fixed ones (like Withdraw/Hide in Shadows), etc.
They instead went the lazy and stupid way, and the fact that you can remove those stacks with another skill is nonsense, it means that one utility slot will be used just to support the heal. Less variability in builds.
I hope that they change this, and I just wanted to let you know that I support your outcry regarding this topic. Not all teefs are bad! ^^
Cheers.

Remember crit damage? Different pieces had different weights when you converted them to stat points. When they introduced ferocity, they normalized them.
They’re doing the same for ascended gear. Ascended isn’t actually becoming 10% better because it’s already mixed between ~5% (weapons/armor) and 10~14% (accessories). They’re simply normalizing that.
In total, ascended currently has ~7% more stats than exotics.
EXOTIC Ring x2 92 63 63 Earring x2 81 55 55 Amulet 115 79 79 Back 47 31 31 2H 179 128 128 Head 45 32 32 Shoulder 34 24 24 Chest 101 72 72 Hand 34 24 24 Leg 67 48 48 Foot 34 24 24 ASCENDED Ring x2 103 68 68 Earring x2 91 60 60 Amulet 126 85 85 Back 56 35 35 2H 188 134 134 Head 47 34 34 Shoulder 35 25 25 Chest 106 76 76 Hand 35 25 25 Leg 71 50 50 Foot 35 25 25 ASCENDED DIFFERENCE Ring x2 436 478 1.0963302752293577981651376146789 Earring x2 382 422 1.1047120418848167539267015706806 Amulet 273 296 1.0842490842490842490842490842491 Back 109 126 1.1559633027522935779816513761468 Staff 435 456 1.0482758620689655172413793103448 Head 109 115 1.0550458715596330275229357798165 Shoulder 82 85 1.0365853658536585365853658536585 Chest 245 258 1.0530612244897959183673469387755 Hand 82 85 1.0365853658536585365853658536585 Leg 163 171 1.0490797546012269938650306748466 Foot 82 85 1.0365853658536585365853658536585 TOTAL 2398 2577 1.0746455379482902418682235195997
Again, you’re wrong, since you’re ONLY factoring the stats. Factor in the +10% on armor rating and weapon damage, and you’ll get a much higher gap of base damage inflicted between exos and ascended.
I did the math, here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/wuv/Ascended-Armour-now-10-difference-Thoughts/5154873
As you can see, there’s a whopping +13% of damage inflicted on an exotic armor when using full ascended equip or exo armor/weapon (I used ascended trinkets for both since they’re easy to obtain).
Moreover, if a player with full ascended fights a player with exo wpn/armor, if they both have power as the primary stat, the disparity in damage inflicted PER HIT is +19.16% if the armors are both light, +19.59% if both are medium and +19.95% if both use heavy.
Of course, you can check the figures crossing (light vs medium etc.), but you’ll fall always around that +19% of damage inflicted per hit.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Galandil.9641
It’s the science of diminishing returns. With everyone receiving 30% more on their stats, asc without a change would be negligible. I’m not gonna run a bunch of numbers since I’m at work right now, but the marginal difference between the increase of ascended paired with the overall 30% Stat increase brings the total effectiveness up by <1%. That is to say, ascended is going to be closely related to an effective 6% difference than prior numbers.
You are completely wrong. Do the math.
Dollars Euros and Pounds costs convertion.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Galandil.9641
That’s not completely true. For example, in Italy (euro area) the VAT is 22%, yet the Standard is still €44,99. Same for all other countries, Germany has a VAT of 19%, and they still pay the same.
The trick is that Anet will know your eventual vote.
People will buy anyways, people always buy anyways.
All the noise and maneuvering will result in nothing — like always.
And people got electrolytes!

To clarify: $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it.
$50 for the expansion and not even a character slot.
Good riddance, A.net.

Witcher 3 2 Expansions Preorder: €25
I’ll stay some more in Skellige and Novigrad I guess.
The pricing is unethical, but come on. We’ve been waiting 3 years for this expansion. Is there any hard core GW player who isn’t going to buy this?
Yeah, me and my fellow 2 mates.

if you look at the world through the cold cynical eyes of economics
You rang?
This reply from a representative of Anet is APPALLING.
Alright, since I don’t like to talk without looking at actual figures, I put down an excel spreadsheet to see how much the actual damage will change in % in the various scenarios (Exo vs Ascended, Asc vs Exo, Asc vs Asc).
I made the following assumption:
- Exos will get a net +30% on armor defense value and character stats. Absolute Exo weapon damage is irrelevant since it’a baseline (so it doesn’t matter for the comparation if it will be boosted by 30% or not).
- Ascended will get a net +10% from Exos values of armor defense/char stats/weapon damage.
- The “Exo” player will have always at least all ascended trinkets.
These are the fixed point in my analysis. Let’s start to look at the actual (pre-patch) damage coefficients in the 3 scenarios above. We all know that damage = weapon dmg * power / armor (skill coefficient is a constant so it can be scrapped, and I didn’t include all the possible scenarios involving crit chance/damage-might-vuln-etc., too long to look at and it wouldn’t help us to understand how base damage will change in the coming patch). As of now, Asc weapons have a +5% damage range compared to Exos. I used the “worst” case scenario, i.e. the primary stat used in the gear is Power.
Exo Weapon vs Exo Armor: 1.078/1.000/0.931 (vs Light/Medium/Heavy Armor, no additional Toughness from traits)
Exo Weapon vs Asc Armor: 1.051/0.974/0.906 (-2.48%/-2.64%/-2.28%)
Exo Armor + Asc Wpn vs Exo Armor: 1.137/1.055/0.982 (5.47% in all cases)
Exo Armor + Asc Wpn vs Asc Armor: 1.109/1.027/0.955 (2.86%/2.69%/2.59%)
Asc vs Exo Armor: 1.187/1.101/1.025 (10.12% in all cases)
Asc vs Asc Armor: 1.158/1.072/0.997 (7.38%/7.21%/7.11%)
We can infer from these numbers that Ascended gear actually introduced a power creep, since even full Ascended vs full Ascended increased the overall damage inflicted by at least a 7% from the original situation of Exo vs Exo.
Now, let’s move on to the projected numbers given by the new stat system.
Exo Weapon vs Exo Armor: 1.079/0.994/0.920 (baseline)
Exo Weapon vs Asc Armor: 1.023/0.939/0.867 (-5.16%/-5.49%/-5.76%)
Exo Armor + Asc Wpn vs Exo Armor: 1.198/1.104/1.022 (11.08% in all cases)
Exo Armor + Asc Wpn vs Asc Armor: 1.136/1.043/0.963 (5.34%/4.99%/4.68%)
Asc vs Exo Armor: 1.219/1.123/1.040 (12.98% in all cases)
Asc vs Asc Armor: 1.156/1.061/0.980 (7.15%/6.78%/6.47%)
As you can see, the % in this case are higher than how they are at the moment. That +12.98% in the full Ascended vs Exotic armor in particular is very worrying, going around in WvW with that armor it’s like having 13 stacks of Vulnerability always on vs a full ascended geared player (more than the +10.12% seen before). The only thing that actually decreases compared to the baseline from the present situation is the full Asc vs full Asc.
Now, maybe the weapon damage range difference between exos and asc will remain the same at +5%, or maybe not all the values will be increased by 10%, but I honestly doubt it and I fear for the worse. This is one of the most, if not THE most bad choice made by A.net, it’ll be a lot harder than now to gear different alts and/or experimenting/switching to different builds on the same toon, we’ll have to choose between spending a LOT of money toward gear or stick to exo armors (which are obviously the most expensive part of the gear) and suffer more damage than before from fully Asc geared players.
However, keep in mind, as I said earlier, that I considered Power as the primary stat in the gear, so other mixed gears will see a lower increase in damage compared to the baseline.
It remains, though, that people that states “it’s a little difference” should revise a little their math knowledge and stop saying that, cause it’s actually NOT true.
(edited by Galandil.9641)
Ok, why are you all talking ONLY about armor, when the actual line from A.net states:
The attribute difference between exotic and ascended gear has been changed from 5% to 10%
GEAR, not only armor. Gear = armor + trinkets + weapons. Or do you have any more (vettable) infos?
Seems like its only NA’s whining about S/D being nerfed. How surprising.
Hi, EU here. S/D nerf is just plain idiotic, with no logic at all and made PvP matches a nightmare to play with S/D.
At least in WvW we can still rely on the dmg of CnD.
Thanks for sharing, this seems a fun build to play with p/d, I might actually give it a try.
But, at the same time, with this thread/build you made me realize (once more, and probably for the last time – i.e.: I’m giving up any hope) that anet doesn’t have a clue how to develop a game at its core.
This is because you came up with a fun build to play only because we now have a new set of runes. And it’s like trying to save a building from collapsing propping it up instead of working from the basement.
IMO developing/balancing a class should be done in this way:
1) Give a set of skills usable by the class, all viable regardless of other things.
2) Give a set of traits usable by the class, in synergy with the skills at point 1, regardless of other things.
3) Give runes/sigils that can work with 1 and 2, but not changing the overall scope of the build.
In this case, we have a lazy design instead: the 3 is the only reason why we choose 1 and 2 – runes/sigils should be the cherry OR the strawberry on top of the cake (cake = skills+traits), they should only give a different flavor to the cake but they shouldn’t force the chef to change all the cake. But here we have the runes as the cake, and skills/traits only as the cherry on top.
Thanks again for sharing the build however.
That’s taking his words out of context though. He did say that people couldn’t use iWay past a certain point because they didn’t know how. And [MATH] apparently showed people how.
And that’s true for almost any build used in GW1 (the “past a certain point”).
With the difference that IWAY was:
- easy to play/learn;
- steamrolling vs newbies/players who didn’t know how it worked
It’s like bragging in GW2 how much you’re skilled while using, in WvW, a build like P/D condithief. Which is all this thread is about in the end, bragging.
Calling IWAY the cheesiest etc etc is one of the most ignorant statements I’ve ever heard. You wanna know why r10+ IWAY existed? because it worked.
That’s the exact definition of cheese: a build that works even in the hands of mediocre players.
I know a lot of players that, during the days of GW1, played only Tomb, for years, and others (like myself) that played only GvG. You could say that removing either would decrease the playerbase, maybe it’s true, but the problem that even just the playerbase of only Tomb or only GvG was a lot wider than the one actually playing any GW2 queue (solo or team).
It’s not a matter of absence of more than 1 game mode in the end, it’s the fact that this conquest mode it’s just bad and boring.
Would you care to expand on this concept ?
I know what you mean but you should try to make it more accessible for the everyday forum goers if you want to sollecite a broader response.
Simple: matches start after you wait a long time, for example in EU for a soloq match you have to wait on average 5-10 mins in the time range 23:00-1:00. In the same time range, a GW1 GvG would start in less than 2 minutes on average after 2 years from release.
And GW1 GvG was a 8v8 teamq (as far as match starting goes).
You can even see that the players are almost always the same, it’s like getting them from a pool of 30-40 players.
I think there are reasons why LOL is an esport and this game is not. One is: They really keep DOT’s to a minimum whereas GW2 adds a new DOT every patch.
Not only are they numerous, they are applied AOE with less risk to the caster.
It just makes for really poor pvp at times.
I agree partially.
Look at how conditions were implemented in GW1. The damaging conditions had negative pips fixed (based on the condition itself), and the only thing that scaled with the attribute was the duration. Add to that that the removal of conditions was managed by a LIFO queue, and you ended with a system that promoted skilled plays instead of random spamming like in GW2 (covering the most damaging conditions was paramount in GW1).
Funny note about a specific condition in GW2, Confusion. There was a Confusion mesmer hex in GW1 which worked in the same way as the GW2 condition – guess what, it was scrapped before the release of Prophecies. Food for thought.
I didn’t take that from that post at all.
He was calling out someone who is complaining about a one trick pony that has a minor impact in the actual competitive aspect of this game that it is almost negligible
Because it can be countered really really easy.People would rather complain about everything than take 10minutes to figure out what it’s doing
why it’s doing it
and how you can counter it effectively.
Then you should learn to spot straw-men.
What Mark said it’s true, Anet it’s doing again and again the same mistakes in “balancing” the game. I’ll give you an example regarding their process.
If you’re an old enough player of the game, you should remember that for quite a while thieves could melt most people down playing S/P with Haste (and with melting I mean it, quickness would last even during the stomping). Thieves pointed out that the problem was not in PW in itself, but in quickness, and that that effect should have been nerfed.
Guess what: first, Anet nerfed by 15% the dmg of PW, leaving quickness as it was. Months later, they proceeded to nerf quickness from 100% to 50% speed, never reverting the changes in PW.
Or, look at it now about thief s/d build: the problem was/is not in the FS/LS skills, but in their synergy with feline grace and air/fire sigils (again, passive procs!). Thief players were shouting this thing since a lot of time. You know pretty well what happened, Felince Grace and the sigils remained untouched, Anet made some random/idiotic changes to FS/LS, now the weapon set is way subpar and not viable anymore in pvp (at least, vs any competent player).
This is the same about the topic at hand: Nightmare runes are not, overall, a problem. But, when coupled with a specific build of the Necro, they create a problem. And I fear (pun intended
) that their solution in the future will be: nerf Necro leaving the runes as they are.
So, in the end, the fact that Anet just messes around when trying to balance things out and ends up in creating more problems than before, it’s true.
I checked you on both EU/NA TPVP/SPVP leaderboard and you’re not even on it.
Hot join Heroes tend to complain this one trick pony rapid fire build more than anyone else, but don’t know that build is just borderline viable in rank battle. (So many, SOOOOO MANY counter to that power ranger in TPVP/SPVP)
Mesmer dish out similar damage with way more utilities to help the team. (And their attacks way harder to mitigate)Don’t get me wrong or accusing me of saying leader-board is an accurate measure of skill, but if you’re not even on that 1000 (which is SOOO EASY to get in if you at least play some ranked battle, just a little), it shows that you almost never play competitively . Yet you want us to listen to your QQ about the balance issue that Anet continues to fail huh?
It’s like saying that any game developer staff should have a team that is “top” in its own game.
Like in GW1 GvG, during the old good times, Anet should have had their own team constantly in the top 100 positions in the ladder.
The sheer stupidity of these posts of yours is appalling.
There, I’ll write it in a simpler way so you can understand it:
Skill in developing/balancing != Skill at playing the game
It will proc exactly before landing an autoattack, thus giving you revelead and kittening you up for good.
PS: Pretty much all complaints about any class, stems from WvW, not sPvP.
You’re so wrong about this, so wrong, mate.
