Yea that’s what I’m working on now. The carpal tunnel really kicking in haha. See I have to watch the video and in excel press what gets salvaged “0,1,2,3” and if I sneeze, blink, have an itch within the 15 minutes I have to start all over lols But I’m working on it ^^

In a game economy you need to have things that cause you to lose funds in one way or another. Without that there is no good economy in game and inflation etc will go crazy. If your complaint was towards the size of tax that’s different, but there’s a team devoted to the economy and making sure it is as stable as they can keep it. Taxes are a needed evil, as much as I hate them I understand why they are important. Not to say I don’t miss my military time when I could buy $300 worth of stuff from the PX and it would cost… $300 ^^; They even added bottled water deposits where I live.. So much for buying 34 packs of water, cause I never make it to the store to get the deposit back lol..

EDIT – Nevermind, the video has enough information in it to calculate the percentages of each amount – we don’t need the HD versions. Except the last two salvages cut off of the BLK video. GAH.

Just to be clear, the frequency of each drop amount determines the variance between drops, which has a really big effect on how fast your results regress to the mean, and consequently, your sampling error margins.

For example, at a 0.9 ectos/salvage average with 200 data points, we could add on a 95% confidence interval of +/- 0.0425 ectos per salvage if 90% of the salvages were for 1 ecto and 10% were for 0; that’s a very robust result.

At the same time, if they came from getting 3 ectos 30% of the time and 0 ectos 70% of the time (a 0.9 ecto/salvage average) with the same 200 data points, our 95% confidence interval would be +/- 0.195 ectos per salvage – more thakittentimes as large!

So we really do kind of need that information if we want to make any kind of firm statement about whether the amount of data we have is ‘enough’.

For those curious on how the test went coin wise, well I ended up better than I started heh. Thanks to the Mystic Forge change I started doing after the 2nd test I made quite a few superior runes including the Superior Divinity Rune. Thanks to that my losses with master kits were covered.

Started with 48g
Ended entire test with 80g after all fees,travel, overpriced test #2 rares etc.

I’ve added 200 more rares with master salvage kits.

As pointed out in another of the threads OP made for this, the sample sets appear to be a random assortment of rares. The sample size is moot since it doesn’t appear to be a controlled sample anyway.

I appreciate the effort that was put into this but unfortunately the results don’t tell us anything. If you are pursuing this issue out of academic curiosity, you have to use scientific method, otherwise you are just wasting money. It is better to have a controlled sample of 100 items than to use a random set of the 200 cheapest items you can find.

If a dev can verify that all armor types of the same level will yield the same results then the results would be fine. There will NEVER be a way to see 100% accuracy to figure this out, but like I said before since devs DO have the tools to know and have stated as such its a good indicator that what they say is true. My evidence is merely unbiased results and I am in no way going to buy 200 specific armor types to help some TP player profit from this. All items were Armor types and all were level 80 Rare.

I understand the scientific method, however, I also understand the dollar/time method. Meaning I’m not going to spend 100’s of gold to appease a few people with a conspiracy theory as I have stated unbiased evidence and they have not.

I used my story key, got a salvage kit, bought a bunch of level 68 rares and turned 1g into like four. Nice start point.

I think they might, but people have theories on that as well, and clearly I’m not a billionaire :P I’d love to try every level but yea, maybe when I’m able to purchase 4 legendarys I’ll go for it heheh The 80’s were just to keep the level the same so there was less variables.

Well for a small % chance rolls, 200 samples may or may not be enough to infer drop rate with any degree of accuracy. That’s simple Prop and Stats 101.

400 is more helpful. And we may be dealing with two rolls for ectos. First if we get any and second how many within a range. Also the chances within the range may not be the same (ie 70% – 1 30% – 2). The actual mechanic is difficult to surmise only using the results of approx 1.25 for BL and 0.9 for Master/Mystic.

But this does appear to support the claim that BL kits aren’t worth it for just ectos as 0.35 ectos is worth at current sell price around 9s 23c while the difference is use between the two kits is 23s and change (100 Gems@1g98s).

Aside from the gem cost if you “do” buy them i just want to note that the kits themselves can be free and allow for 100% return of an upgrade. Just in case newer people are reading and weren’t aware of this difference. Sadly my results weren’t tracking that, but I learned after trial #1 to toss the runes in mystic forge which netted me a large amount of my spent money back ^^

What level range of rares did you use? For example, were they all level 76-80 or some other range like that? Did you track the level during the testing? Were the samples for both Black Lion and Master kits all approximately the same distribution of item level?

In regard to the data, I’d like to compare it to the rates I’ve gotten from my salvage tracking:

Your data fits extremely well with mine, with a difference of about 2.5% for Black Lion and about 5.5% for Master/Mystic.

I wanted to keep some things constant, unfortunately I didn’t think about upgrades until after.. But the gear itself was all Armor, was various types, and was ONLY level 80. Aside from the lacking a average for upgrades which would have been cool to find out as well, that’s the best i could do without spanning this over like 3 months of buying very specific gears heh

Sorry but 200 salvages is not enough to prove that BLSK produces more ectos than Master. It is just luck.

Theres a large problem with giving info on when a sale will be as it greatly can affect gem transactions. Which in some cases can be a RMT’s dream. Now as much as i want to see keys on discount.. and I do.. I know that I just have to wait ^^

So the reason behind all this was because I noticed a large amount of people complained that Arenanet made BL kits as a scam and they were no better than masters. So I wanted to post unbiased results from as many rares as I could do (money wise..) even at my own expense as you can see I lost a great deal of profit. But i hope this thread shows people how the kits work and they can factor in for themselves what is more worthwhile using.

Some important tips:
Buying kits directly for ectos is not as profitable over time.
It is best to use free kits you are given as rewards from BL chests or from rewards.
I recommend not using BL salvage kits on anything lower than level 77 rares. If you do, that’s up to you.
Don’t forget Master Kits cost 15s+ for 25. BL kits are sometimes given free, or ina decent amount as rewards for BL chest.

Anet have said they’re going to add player housing and guild halls at some point in the future, but that it’s not a priority.

Id tend to believe what Salacious has said. I know they said it, but its not going to happen. They are dropping this game pretty quick development wise. We don’t see the figures, but it appears they aren’t making enough money on this game to warrant the level of development we want them to put in.

Yes definitly. The ideal way to have done this would have been:
Grab lowest cost rares with upgrades that are maximum of 24s and no more.
Have entirely free Black Lion Salvage kits.

Or even better farm 200 rares, get 8 stacks of free kits. ^^

But alas.. I didn’t have time or patience for that :P

I only noticed because the Kits should return an upgrade 100% of the time . . . and you didn’t have 200 upgrades. Which made me wonder what the heck happened . . . then I recalled picking up some rares in Fractals which had no upgrades

Yea sorry about that lol. Like I said it would have been best to do it that way, especially monetarily. 200 upgrades is always better than 157 haha.

. . . I would have chuckled all of them into the Forge. I’ve had decent luck with that lately, not so much with chucking in the blue junk. I started selling them again. sigh.

There is an instance in each character’s racial home city which acts as a ‘home’ in as much as it changes to reflect decisions made in your personal story. You can’t purchase anything or adapt it other than through choices made in your story.

Yes definitly. The ideal way to have done this would have been:
Grab lowest cost rares with upgrades that are maximum of 24s and no more.
Have entirely free Black Lion Salvage kits.

Or even better farm 200 rares, get 8 stacks of free kits. ^^

But alas.. I didn’t have time or patience for that :P

I only noticed because the Kits should return an upgrade 100% of the time . . . and you didn’t have 200 upgrades. Which made me wonder what the heck happened . . . then I recalled picking up some rares in Fractals which had no upgrades

Yea sorry about that lol. Like I said it would have been best to do it that way, especially monetarily. 200 upgrades is always better than 157 haha.

Lol.. no way… Yea, thats part of what this was for. I’ll try Master kits next when I get a chance, unless someone beats me to it. But they better have visual proof as well heh.
Problem with Master Kits is they aren’t free like the BL kits were for me lol.. If I did the math right I think 8 Master kits is 1g 22s 88c.

My actual BL kits are from BL chest rewards. I’m assuming people would be using free ones from rewards etc to get ectos, and thus the results may help them decide. But like I said I haven’t done Master Kits yet, that’s the real result I’m after. Just wanted to post results so far.

But yes BL kits come in stacks of 25 so 25×8. And at 300 gems each X8, yes 2400gems would be correct. If I bought them like that.

48g was the cost of 200 rares at an average of 24s each.

I didn’t start this test until I had a large some of kits (and gold obviously..) ^^

I ended up with about 68g in the end, but this wasn’t for profit, was just to give results to the community.

For fun I grabbed some dyes, opened them from laurel. Made like 9g, was pretty sweet heh. Sometimes RNG loses and I win ^^

94 mithril
25 elder wood logs
7 gossamer scraps
112 silk scraps

I’m hoping to do a Master Salvage Kit comparison sometime. But for now just wanted to show people what 200 rares got me. Hope this helps give an idea of an average, again sorry I couldn’t do more.

Strategy and skill should always be a key focus of GW2 and never which class you are. Just my opinion.

Would it be possible to add something visual to icons to denote more clearly that they are a masterwork/rare/exotic as some of them use the same icons?

I’m no paint shop master.. but anything simple would be cool. ^^

Edit:Unique items could keep their icons/visual. Just generics would be affected,and not necessarily how I did, just an idea heh

I’m more dissapointed with forum attitudes, you can’t even make a post without someone derailing it so far off topic that it gets locked..

Some people in game are no better, luckily with a good guild you can ignore them all. Too bad the forums don’t have a guild..

Although this was a bohoo on your part, I agree that the guild panel functions are extremely not user friendly. For example, I can accidentally right click a member and upgrade him to a guild leader without any warning or undo ability and then completely lose access to my very own guild.

I noticed this kind of problem since the very first day and was testing out the “accidents” we can run into with such things with a close friend. Needless to say, it’s not surprising yet reaffirming that anet has very kitten poor support… It’s always the same copy and paste sentence, “we are sorry that this happen to you, we can’t do anything about it even though it was our fault”.

In most games, guild leaders are bound to the account so if the guild leader quits, usually the guild cannot be sustained anymore. In this case, Anet should have a simple confirmation box before a guild leader transfer is done. possibly similar to a character delete confirm box "are you sure you want to change guild leaders to xxx, please type your account name to confirm (or email address or guild name, whatever works)

Very well put, that’s all is needed to prevent this kind of blunder. I haven’t given up trying to contact this inactive leader but it seems everything I,ve tried up to now, I’ve hit a brick wall.

On another note. Sorry I’ve not been able to reply to everyone, been busy this last week formatting my drive and installing window7 on my pc and going through all the pains of upgrading stuff. Still need to finish some things, but got it mostly done.

You know if you had enough people, maybe 30? Who put 2g into a guild with the name you wanted you would probably be back to where you were. 30 people x 2g is 15,000 influence I think. I have my own personal guild and it has all the buffs of the guild I’m actually in minus pvp and the new addons. That’s just from tossing influence into it every now and then.

Don’t do the same events more than 4 times without switching to another area and doing a different event. Simply being logged off doesn’t remove event DR “always”. Try to explore different areas and you will most likely never deal with DR.

It doesn’t have to be referred to as St Patricks day, much like Wintersday is not christmas. Just a reason to celebrate. And a reminder to people that forums are not a place for religious arguments. This thread was intended for “holiday” ideas, and those holidays listed are merely representations of “themes” not beliefs in game.
