New permanent dungeon?

in Tower of Nightmares

Posted by: GoldenTruth.2853

GoldenTruth.2853

I doubt it is a new dungeon since we had a new dungeon a month ago and we are getting a FotM revamp with the next 2 months.

Also you can tell by taking into account how much work is put into each patch since most living story teams are on a rotation where they do 2 updates in a row. The TA dungeon took up a lot of that teams time (can tell this from very few additions to Halloween). For this patch, although there isn’t much to do gameplay wise, you can tell they spent quite a bit of resources into this patch since they revamped the visuals of a huge chunk of the zone.

I expect we will be entering the tower next patch, it just won’t be a dungeon.

What do you guys hope the update will bring?

in Tower of Nightmares

Posted by: GoldenTruth.2853

GoldenTruth.2853

I don’t get why so many people believe that this update will be a dungeon patch. All the pictures and videos have shown scenes from outside the tower. This suggests that the inside of the tower either won’t be accessible this patch (maybe possible next patch) or will be a minor story segment. Not only that, but we had a dungeon patch 1 month ago and know there will be a FotM update within the next 1.5 months.

If I had to take a guess about what the patch would be I’d place my bets on it having two moderately long instanced story segments, with the main focus of the patch being on open world events.

What would I want personally? Like several people have said an open world multilevel dungeon. However, very little evidence points to this being the case. I don’t really care what type of content it is though as long as it ends up being interesting and fun.

dungeon VS world Boss rewards

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: GoldenTruth.2853

GoldenTruth.2853

they can keep the useless bloodstone T7 mats in dungeons and give me my guaranteed rare instead.

edit: your idea about champions having a guaranteed rare drop is also interesting, up to know I stay away from champ farming it is boring as hell, but if they did guarantee a rare I’d do those farm runs at least for 30 minutes or so.
(I hate farming, it’s so freaking boring)

That wasn’t what i was saying at all.

I’m saying dungeon rewards (or at least AC which you used as your example) are far superior to world boss rewards, and rightfully so as dungeons tend to be more difficult (with the exception of Tequatl and possibly some of the temple bosses). Therefore, your complaint make no sense.

However, champ farming nets far more gold than world bosses, yet, is just as (if not more) mind-numbingly boring. It also on average usually nets more gold than something somewhat challenging such as dungeons.

Therefore your argument should be: “Dungeon’s should give better rewards since they are more challenging/risky than champ farming yet yield lower rewards.”

dungeon VS world Boss rewards

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: GoldenTruth.2853

GoldenTruth.2853

This just hit me right,
An easy world Boss that takes 5 minutes to down has a guarantted rare item drop
while a dungeon run say even an easy one like AC takes 10-15 minutes to complete and it’s much harder, so why don’t we get a guaranteeed rare for that ?

rewards in this game are so subpar and sometimes down right wrong !

Because a rare is worth less than the 1.75g from completing an AC path?

Edit: Though if you made the same argument with champ farming instead I would have to agree with you.

why do you "turn off" content

in Living World

GoldenTruth.2853

Well besides the obvious “wouldn’t exhibit a changing world” which I think is a bad argument and could easily be solved by adding herald flashbacks.

The biggest problem in my mind has to do with people actually playing the content. One could see a glimpse of this at the end of the Sky Pirates patch where Aetherblade Retreat wasn’t being run much (in a non-dungeon setting you could see this with how few people were doing Crown Pavilion when Clockwork Chaos came out).

Not to contest your point but people not doing Crown Pavilion stuff after Clockwork came out was more to do with the fact that Clockwork actively locked the Pavilion until you completed some invasions. That combined with the fact that the invasions proved to be more profitable than anything in the Pavilion ensured that nobody bothered going back anyways.

Well the part about profit was kind of the point. Once the novelty wears off, for most players it essentially comes down to what is the most profitable at that point in time. For example, when Crown Pavillion was new people still did the champ train there even when there were more profitable farms (ember farming/frostgorge champ train)

GoldenTruth.2853

You can buy the jetpack off the trading post (though it is a high priced ~175g).

The actual dungeon will return (probably late November to early December), albeit a somewhat shorter version because it will be made into a fractal.

See I think it’s dumb to even make it a fractal. It should have just stayed and been expanded on as a regular dungeon with a story mode as sort of a repeatable finale to the f&f story. It really doesn’t make any sense.

I think it makes a lot more sense to have it as a fractal, but whatever.

If you want reasons I can expand on why.

I’m curious what you have to say, though I doubt it’ll change my mind.

Well besides the obvious “wouldn’t exhibit a changing world” which I think is a bad argument and could easily be solved by adding herald flashbacks.

One could see a glimpse of this at the end of the Sky Pirates patch where Aetherblade Retreat wasn’t being run much (in a non-dungeon setting you could see this with how few people were doing Crown Pavilion when Clockwork Chaos came out).

Simple put, there isn’t much incentive in doing it far after release. Many people won’t care about a 7 month old dungeon especially if the reward is simply a chance at a skin. So what’s a simple way to solve this? Increase the incentive to run it. However, this ties into the 2nd problem. If they increase the incentive for the new dungeons suddenly all the old ones are run less (because they are less profitable). As Anet adds more and more dungeons, people will run the less rewarding ones less and less, including those past living story dungeons (something we already see now). Even if they made it so all the dungeons were just as rewarding for their risk the dungeon running community would then be split between X number of dungeons.

However, if you put these new dungeons in fractals instead you aren’t fracturing people as much. Because fotm randomly selects the dungeons you run you see this fracturing far less. It would be much easier to find a group (as well as balance the loot) for a dungeon that randomly picks from a large pool of dungeons than from just as many individual dungeons.

Now that doesn’t mean I agree with making it so loot like the jetpack is unavailable. I would rather have it be something like a rare chance at jade maw chest if it was in a previous fractal. While meta-achievement rewards (something guaranteed if you were there and did the content), remains limited time.

FotM rewards would need a large revamp for this to work effectively though (as people actually need incentive to run it).

Well Scarlet almost definitely plays some sort of role in this release for several reasons:

- She is the main villain of this Living Story arc. Most if not all of the non-holiday/SAB updates will be connected to her.
- Tower of Nightmares
- The videos voice is same person (I think) as the one for Twilight Arbor
- Can see a giant portal/dimensional rift above the tower

However, the krait being super xenophobic doesn’t mean that they can figure out a lore-compatible reason why they are listening to her.

For example, there is a giant mesmer viel covering the tower, likewise a mesmer could be influencing the krait leaders. Or Scarlet could simple make them an offer so inline with their goals even they couldn’t refuse.

This concept art was posted on reddit and its a concept for something called a Krait Obelisk

I hope it’s a new Dungeon. I dislike content that levels you down.
Maybe the new dungeon has some water bosses and the new update focuses on underwater fighting.
So underwater weapons get updates since they had no changes at all in the last huge patch even though it had alot of balance changes.

Chances are very low it is a new dungeon because we just had a dungeon update 2 weeks ago (will be 4 weeks when it comes out) and the other living story team working on dungeon content is focusing on the Thaumanova Reactor fractal (something probably out in December).

A Question on the Living Story Jumping Puzzle

in Blood and Madness

Posted by: GoldenTruth.2853

GoldenTruth.2853

Both this year and last year the puzzle restart is based on a timer and the number of people who get sent back to the hub zone. This means it gradually fills up over time, however, when someone fails there is a jump in the progress bar. In fact, people are far less cutthroat because player character models don’t get in the way of your camera (you should have seen the hate against norns and charrs last year).

The only things that changed are:
1. Other players are now wisps (good change)
2. Is an activity so you can’t bring your friends in (both good and bad change since you can’t bring your friends, but I think it counts for the daily activity)

While I can sympathize with you, there are usually two patches, and the second patch is usually only around until the next one. It’s been like this for a long time.

You had SAB for a month, but the Boss week achievements didn’t stay around as long, during the SAB month. It’s been going on for a long time now.

I, at least, was aware of how long the achievements would be around for.

What Anet needs to do on temporary achievements, I think, is to have a countdown timer on the meta screen or something like that.

At least all the other achievements and the mini can still be attained.

Well the TA path would fit into being the 1st patch (even though Halloween is staying for 1 month instead).

Like you said countdown timer would be nice (though they cant be specific about when next patch hits).

Not in my way of thinking. The first patch usually occurs early in the month, the second later in the month. SAB was clearly the first patch…because boss week before that was the short one.

SAB: 1
Teq:2

TA:1
Halloween: 2

I am fairly certain the team that did TA also worked on this years Halloween (though SAB and Teq had separate, unique to that living stories teams).

Also TA was on October 1st so even going by your comments logic….

Again I say it: If you were doing that, you were one of the people I was rezzing after the fight and were just riding on the work of people who were paying attention, good job. The poison pools and adds easily wiped out large swaths of players before. What you’ve said here is the exact opposite of the way it was.

Before = Before the Tequatl Rising update?

or do you mean those AoEs that really didn’t do anything? To which I would then question whether large swaths really means 0-3 players.

Huh that’s weird, because I saw tens of people downed at a time by those poison clouds. Perhaps because you were afk and down you didn’t see them?

GoldenTruth.2853

Before all you had to do was run up to his foot and afk auto attack. No mechanics, no threat of death, nothing. He’s a giant dragon, he shouldn’t be less threatening than a champion bandit. Sounds like the only reason you thought he was interesting before was because he visually looked cool (something that stayed the same).

As you have already said you can join a guild dedicated to killing Tequatl or just guest on to a server that has him on farm during the daily reset (I know TC kills him/has a good attempt at killing him during the daily reset encounter).

Just because less people fight him does not indicate that he is in a worse state. He is currently designed to be a boss fight that requires more coordination than the other meta-bosses. If people don’t want to deal with him they have plenty of alternative bosses they can fight. If people do want to fight him they can easily do so with a little effort (join a Teq slaying guild). The only major problems with the encounter imo are over-reliance on turret controllers, how the first 25% is the hardest push, and most importantly, the lack of in-game tools used to form large parties.

Regardless, the difficulty of the encounter itself isn’t a problem and I can’t wait until more of these meta-bosses actually become some-what challenging (not saying all meta-bosses should be as hard as Teq, but all the dragons should be at least).

The worst part for me is the part where you have to get 2 Oozes to the gate at the same time to continue. How the hell are you even supposed to do that without luck? This part alone could take you from 30min and even up to an hour! The Lava Elementals are highly attracted to the Oozes. It doesn’t matter what you do or where you lure them, those Elementals will want a slice of that Ooze like it was made out of cake. And just like a cake, that Ooze is gonna melt into the ground after 5 or so hits from the Lava Elementals. The only way I could see this done faster is by having a very good and coordinated group with specific classes(what happened to the “no Holy Trinity” Anet?).

One person takes the right path, grabbing all the oozes and bringing them to the right gear. Another person takes the left path, grabbing all the oozes bringing them to the left gear (usually aggro to the ooze once so just wait for it to die). Bring the elementals to about 50% at the gate (do NOT kill any of them yet). When ready tell your ooze kiters to start kiting. As they are kiting finish off the elementals. If everything works the elementals won’t respawn before the oozes reach the gears. If someone makes a mistake it is easier to just run out of the room and restart it.

Dungeon is fine as is. It’s not difficult as long as you know the mechanics of the fights, but punishes you if you fail to execute them correctly.

“New Fractals” – Probably coming in November
“Ascended Armor” – Armor has already been datamined implementation is probably coming soon.
“New Legendaries” I doubt this will be coming this year or at least anytime soon.

Fractals will more likely be in December since the living story teams are working on 4 month intervals . They didn’t know who was going to win the election until after Cutthroat Politics ended so the Queens Jubilee/Clockwork Chaos team is probably working on the FotM patch instead of the Bazaar/Cutthroat team.

I don’t think you can skip the trash based on the info in the top right corner (though I don’t consider this intrinsically bad as long as there is mob variety and not too much trash)

Im not even going to do this path now…..trash mobs are not fun they are not interesting. The guy in the video said his and anet’s design philosophy was to create content that would teach you new things or reward you for what you have learned. trash mobs do neither. They dont give you rewards except for trash loot, and they dont teach you anything. TAFU taught alot of people that you cant just go into any dungeon and expect to do it without any prior knowledge/ use of reflects. I bet the only reason they took the path out was because the devs dont know how to use reflects either seeing as how with two guardians they were having a hard time with one of the vines in that “tricky” hallway.

Devils advocate time.

In Molten Facility a lot of the trash mobs abilities were adopted by the final 2 bosses in the end (shockwave, bouncing fire AoE, invuln AoE).

Plus I am 90% sure the 1st boss of this new path uses the ooze pheromone in some way (which was taught in the 1st puzzle).

Reward-wise really depends on what is in the aether-caches and how good the dungeon completion reward is (as it would be significantly lower if there weren’t trash mobs to make the dungeon longer).

I’m glad that they are replacing some of those terrible on-release dungeons (though TA F/U was probably the best of the 3, excluding the final boss). Though I would like the other 2 either replaced or completely revamped as well.

The new one looks boring as hell and it only took the devs 30 min to finish meaning for pug groups it will take 5 min + 7 min of watching the unskippable npcs talking scenes.

I did all of it ill go back to watch it in case i missed anything but it seemed really boring. The worst thing was that puzzle part. I dont know about you but i like difficult bosses not difficult communication with members of my party especially those french guys who somehow keep finding their way into my parties.

We’ll whether it is interesting or not is subjective, but in the stream they didn’t finish the dungeon. In fact they stopped right before the 1st boss (of what I would guess is 3 bosses).

They spent 9 minutes failing the puzzle then trolled us by not showing at least one boss fight…

Well it wasn’t really just “jumping” it was keeping track of the laser and knowing when it was best to be on a box and when it was best to be running around. I don’t see how being forced to better understand and pay attention to your surroundings is a negative.

The other issue was the fact that the golems (and thus their pull tells) were nigh invisible when the player was trying as hard as they could to just stay way ahead of the beams. If the beams had moved about half of their speed during the fight, so that players had more time to be doing SOMETHING other than constantly fleeing from them, then the fight might have been more fair. As it was, most players had to do everything they could just to stay ahead of the laser walls, and thus the golems got charged up and became nigh unkillable.

The golem pulls were somewhat hard to see I’ll give you that. However, it only becomes difficult to keep track of everything in the last phase. In the short beam phase you could easily just stack on a box. While in the large beam phase you could easily kite them in a circle. The last phase doesn’t last very long and it stresses combining what you just learned while giving a sense of urgency. Besides, they were just standard golems so even when they went invuln it isn’t like hit and run tactics were useless against a small health pool. The fight stressed surviving over simply dpsing (though I’m sure you could probably just brute-force it with enough dps like every other fight in the game).

Good for you. After failing miserably nearly 5 or so times on 3 run attempts, I swore off that dungeon for good. Frizz was just awful. That fight was horrible to deal with, yet another fight that punished you for trying to revive, for not being fast enough, constant pulling, and beams killing you in 2 hits at best. No thanks. If that garbage returns, I’ll just watch a video of Twilight Assault and pretend I did it.

Is it a bad design if a boss that many people are unfamiliar with is somewhat challenging and causes you to wipe a few times O_o?

I thought the Frizz fight was the best fight they made since Giganticus Lupicus, and excluding the Mai Trin fight dragging on forever (along with her undodgeable shadowshot), AR was a step way above their other dungeons.

I have to disagree. The “fight” was a badly made jumping puzzle, nothing more.

The only skill that let you survive was being able to jump on top of poorly designed boxes. You could not support your teammates if someone was not a skilled jumper and there was no build you could make that would assist with jumping on the boxes. You either had those jumping skills or you didn’t and unless most of your group did as well, this gated the entire Aetherblade storyline and prevented people from seeing it. I saw enough posts when this content was live to know that my group of friends were not the only ones who had this issue.

Previous jumping puzzles in dungeons allowed players to support each other. For example the sloped stairway with electrified pulses in the Uncategorized Fractal was designed so people would take turns and others could revive those who got killed and ported right to the bottom. Players could support each other with speed buffs as well and change abilities for such buffs as well. Mesmers could make portals for the platforms if someone in your group had problems with a particular section.

This was good game design. It encouraged working together and enhanced the sense of group gameplay.

Another example of good game design was the Molten Legion final boss fight. That was tough, fun and memorable and even if you wiped, it gave players the feeling that they could succeed if they tweaked their builds and came up with a new strategy. It was not reliant on a single, solitary game skill like jumping which is not shared on the same level by all players.

Frizz’s lab gutted both the elements cooperation and build-tweaking that makes GW2 fun IMO. It was a horrible design and I really hope ArenaNet never gates a storyline with something like that again.

Jumping on top of the boxes was incredibly easy and I don’t see how even an unskilled jumper could miss such a basic jump (and even if they did fail I don’t see how that’s any worse than saying a fight is poorly designed because someone is a bad dodger). You could even dodge or blink through the short laser if needed.

The hard part was not the jumping on top of a stationary box, it was doing so while paying attention to the golem pulls. This, however, does provide elements of cooperation; group stability, group aegis, interrupts, moving as a group not individually.

The reason why I consider it so good is because it is a relatively short fight (2-3 min max) which had a focus on constant movement (watching the lasers while moving in a circle and getting on boxes when needed), paying careful attention to your surroundings (noticing where the lasers were and when the golems were about to pull), and having a clear understanding of the mechanics involved.

Molten Firestorm and Berserker were good boss fights, I can agree with that (albeit they were too easy and needed some damage tweaking). However, I feel Frizz’s Lab had much better mechanics overall.

I’m interested in seeing the new dungeon, but even more glad to hear we won’t be missing on any Mad King fun this year

Oh great, more aetherblade retreat instant kill stuff…

I hope not. ArenaNet has shown they can learn from past mistakes. I am optimistic that flubs like that terrible Frizz’s Lab encounter will not be repeated.

New TA path permanent?

“On top of that, however, is hints that old problems will come to fore in all new ways.”

Sounds like they are updating the old Paths as well. And i hope this new path will be really difficult.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up for the updating of old paths. They probably would have said something specific on the release page if they planned to. After all, in the previous release they said they revamped all world bosses when all they really did for most was add a timer and more health. The quote is probably pointed at the Nightmare Tree boss coming back (which you can see in the trailer).

I’m also hoping that this path is extremely difficult.

I feel like I’m one of the only people who wants the current TA explorable to be completely nuked and replaced. IMO the only thing it had going for it was the environmental design. It lacked good boss mechanics (except the 1st wurm boss to some extent), had a story which really didn’t add anything or matter (3 nightmare court leaders simply trying to take control after Faolin), and had those annoying poison flowers everywhere.

That isn’t to say there aren’t worse dungeons though (looking at you HotW and CM).

I see you there, Captain Casual.

Eh? Was TA supposed to be hardcore and I missed the memo? Tbh I’d rather it be more difficult. I’m simply stating that imo most of the mechanics placed in TA aren’t very good when compared to something like the Frizz or Molten Firestorm + Berserker encounters (though the MF bosses should of had a higher damage output).

Tequatl tokens?

in Tequatl Rising

Simple, yet, great idea.

+1

Problem with it would be as they slowly buff more bosses we would get an even larger number of currencies, so, it might be a good idea to just have one universal super-mega boss token (though this leads to the problem of people getting Teq mini from exclusively doing different fights).

Revamp Tequatl's rewards and add a pre-event

in Tequatl Rising

Posted by: GoldenTruth.2853

GoldenTruth.2853

Right now tons of people are camping at Sparkfly Fen to fight the newly revamped Tequatl. However, later down the road people won’t be simply standing in Sparkfly Fen waiting for a boss that gives terrible rewards.

First off, Tequatl’s rewards need to be upgraded. It is very unlikely that people will wait at a boss who takes far more effort, yet, yields far less rewards than champ farming/other world bosses. It would probably be best to go overboard with the rewards so the event retains the number of players it needs for completion. Therefore I suggest each 25% you get Tequatl down gives at least a rare.

Second, this event needs a pre-event. Although people are sitting in Sparkfly Fen now they won’t be in two weeks. This can be somewhat allieviated by APIs, however, I’m sure many people aren’t going to just wait around in his spawn window when they can be doing different things. The time that it would take for people to waypoint to Tequatl is vital to defeating him, and many people may simply walk into a boss who has downed every turret and has a bone wall up before the main zerg comes. To counter this Anet should add a pre-event to the Tequatl spawn where people build/recharge the mega-cannon so the main zerg can waypoint in. This could also lead to the mega-cannon firing a shot in the very beginning giving many servers that much needed push to get to 75%.

survey: do u want surveys in the game?

GoldenTruth.2853

As the topic states the people posting in this thread are from a very specific sample size. Therefore, this survey is biased and doesn’t mean much.

The only way we can tell if the majority wants in-game surveys is to ask them. However, this won’t occur unless the majority wants to take a survey asking them whether they want to take surveys.
