Colin Johanson on how arenanet measures success.
(Please no gear treadmills, Colin!)
Seriously, we need to get a handle on these WoW rejects who are bringing their addiction for inspection views to games where such behavior isn’t wanted.
This sort of thing did happen in the speed clears in GW1. I recall having to ping my skills each time doing the 100b or EoE parts of FOWSC and if I didn’t have every single one perfect I would get dropped from the party. I used to want to bring one extra spirit.
Of course if I wanted to fool people I could ping the zerker’s gear I have and wear soldier’s/knights gear anyway, but I want to be an honest teammate and contribute in the way people want me to.
Just another thought. If I were to give up the 5% power goes to vitality and take 10 less in strength, would I make up for the 100 lost power with the Empowered trait in tactics? If so, that would buy me a little more vit and boon duration.
Acolytes could be tricky – yeah. Just move constantly. But gate controller? How can you die there? I had no problems there on my engi. And it’s even easier on warrior. You can try heal on crit food if you’re desperate.
It’s embarrassing. Sometimes I make it, but in my last few runs I was at least downed each time. I don’t want to switch my food, as I’m doing these runs for money so I want the +40%.
If I can position myself so I get all of them with 100b, then I can rally off them to get back up. Otherwise I usually go down and am in trouble. Maybe switch to something with shield for 2nd weapon set to buy some time with a block?
It would be helpfull to peeps if you listed your build and traits so they could make suggestions on more helpfull traits.
Sounds like your mostly doing speed runs with the focus on pure damage. If you have some knights gear I would try replacing half your armor and see if that helps.
I run a shouts build axe/wh and have no problems with dying in cof 1. The added might/fury and vulernability really increases my whole groups dps. Might want to check it out if you have never tried that type of play before. It’s not as exciting as full g/c but makes youi more of a group player.
Are you running a signet build? Sounds like your a bit to focused on damage.
I have moved away from signets, partially due to the laughter, but partially due to the fact that I need FGJ and banners to help the team so I don’t have enough signets up. Here is my build: http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-sg-o;1RKkN0P4NLVQ0;9;4TT;0942849B;44X
The banner changes depending on what other people are bringing. I do take knights gear on my helm, rings and legs cause the crit ratio on those items is low. The rest is zerker for pure damage output. People want high DPS warriors for these runs so it’s much easier to get into a group if I have zerkers. Some groups make me ping gear if they are really serious about speed.
Like I said before, most of CoFP1 is easy, it’s just those two parts that usually get me.
I have 8 toons each with 6 types of blueprints. Please, they need to make this at least account bound soon! I got no inventory space.
so, why did the guilds left IOJ? dont tell me they left cus they lost? thats kinda like losers
That’s exactly what happened.
Well come Jan 28th with the changes to transfers, everyone wants to move to good servers. It’s a rush to get out places like IoJ at the moment.
Of course at least I won’t have a wait to get into WvW!
I fee sad for those still on IoJ. It sucks to be in your situation. I hope you guys can bounce back as we would have love to actually fight you fair and square.
We used to be regularly T2 and even had popped into T1 at one pt (though I wasn’t on that week) if I heard correctly. Now I’m just waiting to see how far we’ll slide.
If you like shields, I’d go with Mace/Shield on your guardian. Together with shouts, it’s both incredibly defensive and incredibly helpful to the rest of your group. I have amazing survivability in dungeons. I usually go with scepter/focus as my second set, but staff or GS are both also great choices for different situations.
I think IoJ is heading all the way down to bottom tier. Hopefully we’ll find some balanced matchups there. I’m sad about all the great guilds that left us, but as they leave we go down, and as we go down more leave.
I’m not sure whether this belongs in the Warrior or Dungeon part of the forum, but as a warrior I’ve been doing a lot of P1 CoF lately. Everyone seems to want warriors on these runs and I’ve had a lot of success except for two spots. I don’t like slowing down or not helping my team through certain spots.
1. During the acolyte scene. I know about running to the caves, I know about running to the ledges, I still always die if I stay in the middle long enough to help my team. Then I have to waypoint back to before the bridge and run across. By then the event is or is almost over.
2. During the gate controller scene, I often die. I have my heal and my 2 dodge rolls (which I can place right to stay inside the dome.) I try to 100b quick so I can do enough damage to rally off someone, yet I always go down anyhow. Sometimes after a rally I go down again and have to run back from a waypt while my team waits. Think I got this part under control.
On my build: I am wearing mostly zerker’s so I’m a bit glassy, because people want high damage characters for dungeon runs. I usually take battle standard elite (save it for slaver or last fight) so I can’t use it at either of those spots. I need FGJ of course and I take one banner to help out the team (depending on what others have.) That leaves only one skill for me to play with. I use GS and do keep potions of flame legion for the damage reduction. Does anyone have any suggestions that could help me make it through those parts of P1 runs? For the big battles I’m fine and never go down. (I’m fine vs Slaver and for the final battle.) It’s just those two points that get me.
Edit: Current build is usually something like this http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-sg-o;1RKkN0P4NLVQ0;9;4TT;0942849B;44X
Edit 2: Instead of healing and dodging I’m doing better just slicing them in the controller part, still taking advice on problem one.

Can they become account bound anytime soon?
This please! I play on all 8 of my characters and my bank is full of blueprints. It’s hard to organize. Making them account bound would fix so much for me.
Is there any downsides to a system that lets users simply buy the rings after acquiring enough dungeon tokens?
No, and Anet learned this before Nightfall came out for GW1. That’s why they implemented the system that they did in DoA. It allowed people to save tokens and buy something useful to them as a reward. Then before GW2 came out, in pre-interviews, they stated they would have similar rewards in GW2 which they did implement with normal dungeons (and it worked great!) Then suddenly in FotM they take a complete turn and head off in the opposite direction. I don’t know why. They know which system is more fun for their players.
One thing I would like is some better rewards for story mode, since the story mode dungeons were really well done and there is not much reason to go back.
Hello Havana – The Gw2 file is the executable for Guild Wars 2. The file extensions simply are not showing for it.
I didn’t go in and change any of the extensions. There must have been some error with the crash that somehow changed them. The file would not load, so I downloaded an entire new copy of the game into a different folder (before reading the comment above, that I could have just downloaded it into the same folder and had it write over.) When I go to add/remove programs to delete the corrupted version, I only see one choice for Guild Wars 2. I don’t want to accidentally delete the good one, or both of them. Do I need to leave both to be safe?
I’ve never experienced a crash before in GW2, but tonight the following happened:
I was in Fractals when I got the message about the new patch. After completing the last fractal, killing Maw, and getting the chest I got kicked from the game when I chose to exit into LA. I then clicked to restart and got the message:
F:\GW2\Gw2.exe is not a valid Win32 application
Clicking OK on that little popupscreen gives me:
Can’t open this item. It might have been moved renamed, or deleted. Do you want to remove this item?
Of course I’m figuring this is a shortcut issue. So I go to the folder where the game is located to find no executable files at all. The files there are:
Crash.dmp
Guild Ware 2 Repair
Gw2.000
Gw2.001
Gw2.dat
Gw2
Gw2.tmp
With no executable, I have no idea what to do. I’m trying to download a second copy of the game into a different folder but don’t know if that will work or if the computer can have two copies of the game on it.

We spent well over an hour on this boss today. I think 1:15 fighting him. Could not do it. Got him down to 10% at one point. But if things go bad, he recovers too easily.
Ya sure, dungeon tokens account bound, check.
Karma account bound, check.
Legendaries account bound, waiting.Next level of stupidity and content killer :
Level 80 account bound!
Map exploration account bound!Best regards!
So you are making what is known as a “Slippery Slope” argument here, that if we allow this then we will allow all sorts of other things that may be harmful to the game. These arguments are always invalid, because allowing this doesn’t imply we need to make level 80 account bound or the other things you mentioned. These “slippery slopes” are the type of argument used in politics to make all sorts of bad things happen, but they never are valid.
It will be impossible for me to max out with Ascended equipment, unless I stop playing everything except one build, on one character. Ascended equipment eliminates 83% of the game for me, in one fell swoop.
As someone with three 80s one almost 80 toon, I wholeheartedly agree. This forces us to go one build on one character. I would have approached the game in a completely different way had I known it was going to move in this direction.
When do we get to start phase two of the scavenger hunt?
I think this news is awesome! Really looking forward to the new content and gear.
Nice try, Colin.
Currently a lv 80 rare item is about 15 Silver. A exotic is about 1.5 Gold.
Assumption: The new gear will be about 15 Gold per piece.
I think it’s more likely that the price of exotics will come crashing down. If people put them up for 15 gold, they will be unable to sell as there may be no one to buy.
Also the fact that this is LAUNCHING IN 2 kitten DAYS – you can understand why people are upset. The community that doesn’t want this included in the next patch needs to speak up now or never.
Exactly. Once they let this in the door, the game is changed forever, and in a direction which makes them much more like other more traditional MMOs. We want this to stop now, not later.
If nothing else I would like more communication from Anet. I don’t like what I see right now:
-angry people on the forums
-negative press
-except for the official response, deafening silence from the developer
-the occasional tweet from an official source, with the characteristic whiff of condescension towards critics
-the occasional carefully worded and discordantly cheerful press releaseI’ve seen this beast many times before. This is the behavior of a company that has insulated itself in a criticism-free bubble. Now it’s early still, this is not a terminal condition, they can still be cured. But the symptoms are already there.
This reminds me of what happened with Diablo 3, and it took a long time, but eventually Blizzard caved. They admitted they messed up, apologized to the fans, and started trying to make things better. ANet was never like this in the past, so it’s sad they they’ve become like (D3 release date) Blizzard. It’s bad that they utterly don’t care and won’t respond to the fans and community that supported them for so long.
We don´t want that kitten, not even in a 1 bloody ring.
Exactly. We don’t want to even open this door. It doesn’t lead somewhere good. We’ve seen where it leads. There are Pandas at the end.
As many others have said, I don’t understand why they can’t just treat Ascension in GW2 as they treated Infusion in GW1. Why can’t we just “infuse” our current exotics into ascended somehow?
They could, but they have chosen to go in a different direction than GW1 with this game. I too loved the philosophy behind GW1, and wish they had held to it.
They were going to do this all along. That’s why it’s coming out before any cash shop expansion and without any real polling of the customer base. It has nothing to do with a lack of revenue or “customer feedback”. There’s no logic to those claims.
Good post. This can’t be something they developed a couple weeks ago as a response. This took time to design. They are not being truthful.
The new changes sound great! Can ya’ll stop QQ’ing when the game continues to get a little more challenging? Like for real.. you blew the forums up about the “challenging” Clock tower not giving you free loot. And now you’re QQ’ing about the need to go into another dungeon to have fun. What do you want? To sit in LA? Maybe they can add some chess tournaments in LA for your pleasure and you’ll stop the QQ.
You claim that adding more powerful equipment makes the game harder? You sir, are a very bad troll.
In GW1 they just made the game harder without adding equipment to make it easy. We had to be clever and play well to survive in places like UW and DoA. No one would complain if they were making the game harder, but they are doing the exact opposite of that.
I hope ANet pays attention to articles like these. They may ignore their players, but perhaps they will listen a little to the press?
You can go for ascended gear whenever you feel like it, and I’m willing to bet sometime, even if it’s in 2 years, you’ll want to progress your character gear wise and think ‘Fk, wasn’t a bad idea after all.’
But by then there will be more ascended and infusions for us to collect. That’s why it’s a treadmill. You must keep running to keep up. This update won’t introduce the only infusions the game will have. There will be others. ANet has said said.
This sentence is what has me worried about the new gear.
Quote from Linsey’s blog post:
“Eventually, you’ll be able to kit yourself out with a full set of Ascended gear and high end Infusions to help give you the edge in end game content.”No one was ever supposed to have an “edge”. Ever.
Exactly! GW2 is not supposed to be about ‘my gear gives me an edge over those other players.’ This game is supposed to be the opposite of that.
I don’t think the folks at ANet are dim, so I’m assuming they’d expect a pretty significant push back against a new tier of gear. Yet, they did it anyway. That says to me that they are willing to sacrifice the support of many GW2 fans who love the (up till now) non-treadmill approach to gain an influx of players (fans of the pro gear treadmill approach).
This is what I wish to know more about. How many people in ANet really favor this? How many of them didn’t expect a big backlash? How many of them think this is really just an insignificant change?
Nobody likes a bait and switch and this definitely feels like one.
Feels that way to me too.
It´s a start of vertical progression, we don´t want vertical progression…at all.
And neither did they when they were trying to sell their game pre-launch. funny thing is that we actualy believed them.
Very true. I believed them 100%. This is probably why I’m so angry at them right now.
Solutions:
1: Issue an apology for miss selling a core principal over the 4 years leading up to the game release. Admit that they unintentionally gave us an ideal that they was not willing to standby. Accept requests for refunds.
Release a new manifesto that reflects their new design strategy and move on with the game.2: Admit the decision was a hasty knee jerk solution to please what was perceived to be the majority of the player base. Make new items exotic level stats. Make the new condition feature work on consumables that drop frequently in PvE, Crafting, Karma & via WvW or scrap it. Keep the fundamental value of adding new content with visually spectacular gear for us to grind for. Focus on making the game fun as per the manifesto.
Or they could go with
3. Pretend they are doing this only because the majority of the player base wants it, ignore their design manifesto, and say “I hope all of you are as excited as I am.” Then start making even more changes which make this game more like other MMOs.
It feels like I’m watching the last truly innovative MMO company’s intestines slowly being devoured by a pack of glassy eyed koreans and greasy businessmen in fine suits. While its legs are still twitching.
Very intelligent postings together with very artistic descriptions. I couldn’t upvote this enough.
I having this made into a t-shirt:
We don’t need to make mandatory gear treadmills, we make all of it optional, so those who find it fun to chase this prestigious gear can do so, but those who don’t are just as powerful and get to have fun too.” – Colin Johanson… Pants… on… Fire.
I’m wondering if making it a sig would be infraction worthy?, i can’t see any rules against it but considering how things go it’s best to ask.
Your a genius.
Shortened to fit but done.Feel free to follow along guys.
Done.
Looks to me like 100+ pages of people have PLENTY of people that dont’ want this gear, so take down the names and run with them
If you can do stuff like take down 100 pages of names then you have WAY too much free time.

I say we all do it together. Will they ban us all from the forum at the same time?
I had geared up three level 80 toons each with full exotics. Would never have done that if I knew they were introducing power creep. I wish I could get my gold back so I could save for items of the next tier instead.
One thing that would have greatly extended content would have been making all zones decent at level 80 in terms of rewards, or at least upping the amount of awards in lower level zones. They built a huge and beautiful world and people spend all their time gathering Ori and repeating Plinx and a few dungeons. The content was there, it just didn’t make any sense to do it. Instead they added this.
I just spent so much money on exotic armor for my THREE level 80 toons. Now all of that is going to be subpar? I would have just waited to outfit. I guess it doesn’t matter because if they up the equipment tiers now, they will do it again.
Guild Wars 1 was a great game BECAUSE of the fact that you could get max gear early, so your skill was what mattered most. Guild Wars 2 is heading in the exact opposite direction.
The two things that I feel should be changed:
1. Get rid of the RND elements in creation. You can even make getting a legendary harder, but get rid of the gambling requirements.
2. Make them account bound.
Which of these have better drops? I’m curious as to where I should spend my time int he next day.
Seems like each time I fight the Mad King, I get an account bound tonic. I’ve heard that there are upcoming recipes that can be used to turn Halloween tonics that normally drop from Black Lion Chests into more useful things. Will these Account Bound tonics be usable in such recipes?
(I’m wondering whether repeating Mad King a bunch will be worth it.)
I have no idea what is going on. I did a jump thing around the forge. Turned into something. Got 25 hits and got tossed into the water. I wandered around confused all night. I need a guide.
I can wait a long time for mini games, but more level 80 content? This is going to be awesome! Thank you, Colin (and the rest of Anet.)
Ah, that is a good reason. I’m glad I didn’t buy some to try it. So they don’t work in anything that has an upgrade slot? Jewels are for which items then?
Any reason to use Beryl Orbs instead of Exquisite Beryl Jewels? Just the price?
Great news. I’m tired of only having the same few dynamic events in Orr to do over and over again at level 80. (It is still really fun leveling my toons up to 80 though, but pretty soon I’ll have five 80’s.) I’m looking forward to anything new for my level 80 characters.
We need to test this well. I spent 20g on exotic MF gear/runes/jewelry on my main then did the same for my alt. I need to know exactly how upset I should be.
I dislike going to the older zones because the loot is so awful. They are beautiful and there is so much more I would like to see, but I’m also interested in getting enough money and karma.
