why call it ‘beta’ if no final version?
“beta version (plural beta versions)
(computing, technology) A development status given to a program or application that contains most of the major features, but is not yet complete. Sometimes these versions are released only to a select group of people, or to the general public. The testers are usually expected to report any bugs they encounter or any changes they’d like to see before the final release. This is the second major stage of development following the alpha version, and comes before the release candidate.”
‘beta’ is final bug/other testing by an open/closed player base before the final full release. If there will be no full release, it wouldn’t be a ‘beta’ – it would be the final release.

A fantastic point that ANet will sadly never comment on lest they dare to admit they have been falsely advertising a product for over a year.

pretty much, true facts.

Thank you, somebody finally put into words what has been going on for a year. The term “beta” would imply that, mac users, actually have a native client, with which to report bugs and glitches for. Seeing as our game is still the FINAL window version of the game, forced through a port. Calling it a “beta”, is a blatant lie. ITS NOT A BETA IF ITS NOT EVEN NATIVE!

try reducing graphics to best performance and see if you keep crashing.
If that fixes the crashing, you can increase one setting at a time to your liking.
I think it’s the environment graphics option that makes macs crash.

I’ve been systematically trying each graphics settings one at a time and I dont think its just limited to environment .. more so in wvw .. character limit seems to play a lot in if its going to crash or not.. i think its highly subjective as to where in the game you are .. pve/wvw and how “busy” that spot is at any given moment and if you are in the middle of that “Busy”.

just say it! The game is unplayable with more than 25-30 players on screen. Mac users are getting bent over here.

Also i’ve noticed that, just having the game launcher open, without even logging in through the launcher, is causing either my computer or internet to get laggy. This has been going for 3 days. I have the launcher open in the background, planning on playing within the next 30 minutes… next thing I know, NONE of the webpages in safari will load, all my youtube videos stop loading. Everything else on my computer still works, with the exemption of ANYTHING requiring the internet connection.

Would REALLY like it if devs could just make this game so its PLAYABLE on macs. It seems every second update, mac users get screwed over in performance or connection issues. At this point I’m almost willing to pay to play ESO if THEY HAVE A kittenING NATIVE MAC VERSION OF THE GODkitten GAME!

Ok, here’s a new update to the update:

The devs have developed a fix that should address certain performance issues you have been posting about, and that fix will be rolled out after testing is completed.

That’s not months from now, by the way. Testing is underway!

Mac client confirmed ! (and not a beta one)

The two main problems I have are with the fact that sense its a port, and the lack of support. Its a native widows client being forced through the mac ox through a filter of some sort. I’m not a programmer so i don’t know how it works exactly. I just know it is TERRIBLE to attempt to play sometimes.

And who knows when the next time we’ll see communication from anybody official again.

Yes, It is slightly annoying to have to always hold the Fn key in order to manipulate the music i constantly listen too when i decide i want to game.

I also do it the way flaming said. in the system preferences.

I used to use an app (which Mavericks promptly booted because it wasn’t an identified developer, which i may have to switch too again) called Function Flip. The app is SIMPLE, you go in a select which F keys you want to function as standard, and which ones you want to use only the special functions on.

The way i remember it was a pretty kitten trustworthy third party developer which is the only reason i decided to try it. Because in order to use it you have to completely disable the app downloading preferences in the security preferences. Just something to think about.

Not right now no. The current state of our Mac client which isn’t native it’s a cider wrapper is a bit of a joke. I would hold find something else your friend likes. The Mac support is pretty horrendous. I would not recommend this game to anyone in its current state and probably at all ever again.

I posted yet another request for information in the account forum:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/account/Mac-still-can-t-buy-gems-use-gem-cards/

Although I don’t even know if this bug affects me because I don’t buy gems anymore, I encourage all of you with this issue to stay proactive. Please remain civil, update your support tickets, don’t submit multiple tickets, and if the answer you receive from your support tickets does not solve the problem (ex. use Windows) update your ticket again. That is really the best that can be done at this point.

Posting a new thread is unnecessary and unreasonable. This IS being worked on, and nothing is to be gained by a new post.

I for one don’t care if the Gem Store doesn’t work! I’m not going to put anymore money into this game until YOU say your working on a native mac beta or are starting on one.

The fact that mac users have been forced to play a “beta” which is actually a port is just bad, and should be rectified.

no, MAVERICKS HAD kitten TO DO with these problems. The FIRST thing i noticed after updating to mavericks is that the game ran a lot better. ANet kittened up something with the living world updates.

And the fact of the matter is… I have submitted multiple support tickets on different toons with different information on the same glitches things (POI’S not registering, game crashes, the fact that calling a port a beta is ridiculous) and i haven’t gotten a response from them with any of them yet.

I’ll keep playing the game. But i’m done recommending it to anybody to play, let alone spending any money in the gem store. ANet obviously does not plan on working on a native mac beta client.

I switched over to Bootcamp yesterday. It took a long time to set up from scratch and thankfully I had already paid the €299 for Windows some time back, but the hoops and continual patch updates was a PITA. (which is why I am annoyed)

So I am running the windows client at this point. Oddly enough as 99% of the stuff I do is in OSX, the incentive to reboot the machine to play GW2 has dropped.

I will also no longer be purchasing any gems with real world cash until we get a working Mac client.

which is why I will not bother trying to get Windows 7 and do bootcamp on my machine. I’m just not going to deal with the hassle.

How i would LOVE to tell a windows user that, to play a game, they would have to do a setup on their computers to install OS X with a reboot JUST to play. That will never happen though.

I just find it intriguing that this game states support for mac yet it is truly not a mac client it is a wrapper which by definition is not the same thing. To have a client means that it is coded around the kernel that system is built on. A wrapper is a port and in most cases is very touch and go I think for macs Aspyr does wrappers best. Anet just needs to either drop mac and focus windows or they need to fully support Mac and stop half stepping us. We pay good money for this game and I’m sure most of us have spent multitudes of cash when the gem store is working and to receive this kind of silence from a company is absurd.

That’s exactly what i’ve been saying. Thank you! You put it far better than i was able too.

I understand that it’s easy to get upset when there is a problem, however I’m sure that there are people working to resolve it. We have to stop and think that they are not doing it intentionally, it’s just that stuff happens, and we need to learn to be patient, and to provide them with as much information as possible in order to fix the issue. We are lucky to have a Mac client, being that the majority of gamers are on Windows or Xbox or PS4. Luckily ArenaNet chose to support Mac rather than a console. I know that the Mac client is through transgaming (cider) and is a wrapper around the windows client, it’s not exactly the best, but it has been working for most and allows us Mac users to play a GW2 (the most excellent game out). However, we also have to consider that we don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes…perhaps the cider client was just to allow us Mac users to play right away, and they may have people coding a proper Mac version. We just don’t know as of yet. It’s also critical to be aware that every company has it’s issues, including Blizzard, they have their fair share of issue, not to mention their “cookie cutter” games that draw people in, but don’t exactly have good gameplay or content within them. Blizzard has grown beyond it’s own scope and their quality has really come down to a point of awful.

Just be patient, provide any information that’s requested, and I’m sure we’ll have a fix at some point. And who knows what the future will bring.

The fact that Blizzard has been supporting BOTH pc and mac for over a decade contradicts this idea. Also ESO (Elder Scrolls Online) will support, pc, mac, and both consoles. And all the talk about “we REALLY don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes” that’s because nobody at ANet will communicate to any of us what they are doing, have done or plan to do.
ALL of us have every right to want to know exactly what’s going on. If they ARE working on a native beta client or not. After a YEAR, we deserve that much.

As much as i want to agree with you Flamingfoxx. I’ve seen some recent beta gameplay of ESO, and the basic battle system is very similar to GW2. Also the way point system. What i’m getting at is, and again this is just my opinion, many people may underestimate the power behind the Elder Scrolls name. And it looks like that ESO might be enough like morrowind and, moreover skyrim, that the fact that its an mmo will be almost unnoticed. This is again my opinion, i have never played FFXIV

Actually, i tried to make a thread about having people on OS X not spend money for the first two weeks of March and the mods deleted it. We have no power…

I have power and I have decided to exercise it by no longer buying gems. I stopped buying gems in August after following this board for four months and becoming frustrated with the lack of respect Anet seems to have for the Mac customer base.

When I first started posting here there was no support on this forum from Anet. Then we were told there was someone assigned to this forum. Now a few days a month or so someone from Anet stops in, posts a link to some problem solving steps or says they have no news, and then they silently disappear for a few more weeks. The only problems I have seen acknowledged and addressed were the bugs that didn’t allow Mac users to buy gems. Even then, with the most recent bug, I had to post in the account forum to ask Anet to take a second to post their information on the problem in this forum as the information was not posted here. It seemed to me they would have done so without needing to be promoted since this is the Mac “support” forum and the problem was being actively discussed here by members.

Sure the game works 99% fine for me, but based on the way this community is mostly ignored I have chosen to keep my money in my wallet. I don’t like the way they have handled the Mac client Beta or not. Their attitude seems disrespectful.

For those of you newer to this forum I encourage you to take some time and read through some of the older threads here over the last 6 month or so. I couldn’t care less about a native client because after the way they have handled the Beta client I don’t have a lot of faith in them.

I couldn’t help myself and bought the toxic armor skins. But I am now residing myself to not spending any more money in the gem story in GW2. I’ll save my money now for ESO and Dungeons and Dragons online. Which is old yes. but it is a fun game.

-#2 is the most important thing in regards to this issue.
YES it would be wonderful if there was a native client. But at the end of the day the amount of people who are holding out because of the client not being native would be rather low so the increase in account purchases isn’t likely to cover the cost of completely reconstructing assets to work natively in OpenGL

You just gave me an idea…

Yea, imagine you had to tell a windows player to make the game playable they paid for was they had to install OSX and boot up native into it.

honestly, i would LOVE to do that! Not trying to be sadistic. "Well of course you can play ESO on your PC… You’ll just have too run what’s called a “separate partition” to be able to run OS X along side Windows on your pc. Yeah sorry, ESO is mac only. That or you can try and play the game on a cider emulator. What are you system specs… actually that doesn’t matter never mind." What a day that would be…

While I agree with the fact that ESO will take practically ALL the mac users from GW2 if in fact their game client is mac native. And if it is, they will make a KILLING. The game looks great. Unfortunately for some of us, i’ll only speak for myself, cannot afford the kitten ed 15.99 a month sub fee. The honest truth is, for lack of the kittening lore making any sense with the alliances, they have made it play so much like morrowind and skyrim from what i have seen. That it will be the FIRST mmo that is in fact worth that subscription fee because of the content.
But then I stand by my opinion of Blizzard being greedy daft turds. I mean the fact that they strip you of your flying mount in new areas to FORCE you to experience content means THEY know its not fun content. GW2 on the other hand offers so many fresh, exciting and innovative twists on an otherwise bland and redundant Massively Multiplayer Online gaming market that they have proved it will work with the macro transaction in game store. WoW does it because they can make more money.
I was told that Diablo has awesome graphics, gameplay and good content. It was just a eight hour game. I’m sick of game studios thinking they can half kitten this kitten and still have the full support of gamers.

I’m also sick of all of us gamers dividing and separating each other based on either what systems we play on, be in PC, MAC or console. OR based on what games we enjoy playing most. We are all gamers, we need to stand together on this kitten. The fact is i’m playing on a “pc” (i am on a mid 2011 iMac 27" as you can read in my sig) too. its just built differently, doesn’t run on windows and blah blah blah. I admit it is expensive. I need to end my rant now. But this has been building in me for a while. Like i don’t give a crap if anybody plays GW2 on a pc or windows surface pro. We are BOTH playing this game because its fun.

I have also noticed a VERY huge difference in the playability of GW2 after installing mavericks on my computer, despite the fact that it does feel like Anet tries to make it even harder for the emulator to force the code down OS X throat with each new update.
sorry for my rant.

just an update in case anybody else is still having the problem. I turned reflections completely off like it said in this thread, i was able to turn other settings up higher with no more problems. So in case anybody is still having problems with the random crashes. Try turning off reflections all together. I’ve been able to to play for roughly 4 hours with no problems now, in WvW

Hey guys, my game isn’t crashing since I have disabled water reflections.

4 days no crash: Finished Teq (it usually always crashed after a few minutes)
Had intense 40 vs 40 WvW battles and it didn’t crash (it usually crashed like 5 times per night in WvW)

Bottom line: the code for water reflections is buggy.

Screw what i just said about Disk permissions and the SMC. I’m going to try THIS today. I think i remember noticing a difference with that yesterday. kittening worth a shot if i can possibly turn the other settings ON in the graphics…. yes, ON. I’ve turned most of the graphics settings off in an attempt to WvW.

I understand this is a old thread. But even after the last update post Blood and Madness, I’m getting INSANE amount of crashes. At this point the only thing I THINK i can do without running into some dsbits run error is MAYBE crafting. WvW is OUT of the realm of possibility right now. With more than 10 players on the screen my game won’t run. System specs are in signature. i’ve tried all the troubleshooting tactics that are stickied on the forums save for disk permissions already. Going to try that today. I don’t see why i should have to do the SMC reset but i’ll try that as the last resort.

I almost can’t do anything. I get the same generic “the game ran into a problem that wouldn’t allow it to run” message every time. Yesterday it crashed twice on its own. i never moved or did anything. Not sure what to do at this point other than just stop recommending to everybody i know to try this kittening game!! Because if i can’t play it with my friends, I DON’T CARE!

Not sure if you’re experiencing the same problem. When I open the client it never fully loads (no login info/play or full update bar despite saying its 100%) Attached a screen shot of the client. This is after a good 10 minutes or so of just hanging out so I know its not a loading issue.

Anyone have any suggestions? I’ve already gone into my library and deleted the GW2 file, restarted the client and restarted the computer. Currently running on OS X10.8.4

Any help would be appreciated!

I was just having this exact problem. I kinda started to freak out a little. But I just opened the launcher window again and it updated this time for me.
