Just a reminder that the games you mentioned aren’t necessarily applicable to the MMO sphere in the given example. MMOs were, by comparison to today’s standards, primitive in terms of physics based mechanics, so a lot of the games you listed aren’t relevant to the conversation, despite being great games.
We did have years of standing in one place smashing hotkeys based combat not because nobody wanted to do more engaging content, but because at the time they couldn’t do the type of combat/motion we see in the more action-based setups that are commonplace in today’s MMOs.
I guess that’s my point… and then I just went on waxing nostaligic I guess. heh.
Aaaaaah got it. Well, I didn’t really intend that any of the games I mentioned be used as a comparison for MMOs. The post I had been replying to had just mentioned the year 1999 in a negative light regarding games, so I felt the need to defend an innocent year. I understand the technical limitations. I just don’t appreciate the portrayal of a year in which, to be honest, I was already a fairly seasoned gamer, as some bygone era of yesteryear when the cave-people were too primitive to make a playable game, let alone one that included jumping, haha.
I understand what he means.
- I feel that the aspect crystals in Dry top hinder the use of dry top kites.
All of the people scattered through out the area, including centaurs needed a way to climb/cross the terrain.
You cant say they have been using aspect crystals that just arrived.
The settled areas are all attainable without crystals. They found a way in and made themselves comfortable where they could reach.
I don’t love the idea of past living story rewards being made available at all, but I certainly prefer distribution through the laurel vendor over the gem store. Never, NEVER the gem store.
“In brighter times, Elonian prides gathered around massive “ancestor trees,” where they believed the spirits of their forebears watched over them. According to arcane scholars, the fruit of these trees was seen as divine, possibly as a way to pass down spiritual wisdom from one generation to the next. " From the GW2 wiki on Centaurs.
Back in GW too, I recall Centaurs having a big tree at their home that they considered almost holy.
Wait… so… They’ve been eating prenatal Sylvari for centuries? To “Pass down wisdom?”
…
THE MONSTERS!
My Sylvari main is called Mushnik, if you know the reference!
Also ranger pet moa called Audrey II
I’d have gone with Seymour.
It was also a time in which … back in the day)
?
Is your comment directed at me or sentrasia? Or no one? I’m a bit lost in regard to the relevance. :/
(edited by HyruleanHyroe.1473)
why dont you come up with more creative ways of trahearn dieing?
How about… the Pale Tree is mortally wounded and he sacrifices himself in a ritual he picked up in Orr to heal her so that the Sylvari people have a future?
How about… a golem gone haywire uses his spinning knockback attack to mow Trahearne down like a weedwhacker and the clippings are given a hero’s burial in a paper bag at the end of the driveway?
Hogwash. My very reliable sources tell me that this is a real, undoctored rendering of the final encounter with Mordremoth.
Jumping is not a new concept. Games without it suck. Games without z-axis/height suck. This isn’t 1999 (Sorry random year there!).
WHAT?
1999 is the year of Super Smash Bros. and Unreal Tournament, System Shock 2 and Legend of Dragoon, Pokemon Gold and Soulcaliber! To use it as an example of some archaic “Stone Age” of sucky gaming is downright offensive. Apologize sir, and we shan’t need to duel.
Do you mean the one when you first zone in dry top? Or achievements? I haven’t tried any achievements yet, but the initial jumping puzzle was kind of odd. It didn’t really add anything to the story or to the zone, I didn’t really understand the purpose of having it there. It was weird being forced to do it to get started with the story or even just to start exploring the area.
If it were just for an achievement I wouldn’t mind, since it’s optional. But I couldn’t explore or play the story until finishing that jp.
I’m betting the idea is just to acquaint new players with the mechanics of the crystals. The Festival was set up similarly, but since it’s not a permanent feature there needs to be some form of brief tutorial in place for new players, and that dash and two simple jumps is it.
I’m with the majority of the posters here. Required jumping is minimal and easy, optional jumping ranges from easy to pretty challenging. It’s good design.
With the WP system active however it simply doesn’t make any sense to have “real” mounts. Toys like the broom would be OK though -> as long as it fits the ingame world (what wouldn’t exactly apply to a flying broom… but we still have that one.. so shrugs)
I agree with this statement.
Cosmetic mounts would be fine.
Second that. If you’re looking to make money off of them, you’re SOL. I, however, LOVE my set and have never regretted buying them. Especially since they were made account-bound, because now I can just transfer them to whatever character I’m leveling at the time. They are so convenient.
You have to admit that it’s rather silly to have a Gemstore item be less effective than a chest drop?
Part of me agrees with both sides, so I won’t choose one over the other. However, if the kites had to be different, I definitely think it makes more sense to have the buff be on the in-game drop. If gemstore kites provided a speed boost and in-game drop kites did not, that would be providing “P2W” advantages. Anet seems pretty set against that.
Ah, but it actually only says that it will be cleansed by the rightful king of Ascalon. It’s entirely possible that refers to a Charr, since they originally occupied the lands before humans took over. Adelbern may have laid a curse without realizing the actual implications.
Problem with that logic is, if that were to be true.. Then a Grawl would be the rightful King, since Grawl occupied Ascalon long before either Charr or Human :P
BUT, Rytlock is actually 1/8 Grawl and 3/16 Forgotten. Obscure but true fact of pure authenticity.
—Rytlock’s ritual will fail. Why? If Rytlock succeeds, Anet will be breaking their own lore. According to GW lore, only a human can cleanse ascalon of the ghosts.
Ah, but it actually only says that it will be cleansed by the rightful king of Ascalon. It’s entirely possible that refers to a Charr, since they originally occupied the lands before humans took over. Adelbern may have laid a curse without realizing the actual implications.
Yeah! They obviously should have been Ley-Fractals. There’s even precedence!
Then Mordremoth could have been Mandelbrot.
I completely agree. This is a RPG: why do my skills matter? When roleplaying, I want to pretend I am someone that is not myself. That character is good at things that I am not. And I don’t want to be constantly reminded that I am not good at something (jumping).
Because your keyboard and mouse inputs control your character, not your imagination. Players vary in skill and some like challenge. If you do not like challenge, then don’t do the challenging optional content.
Sounds like tabletop games may be more your speed.
Eeeeeeeeh, most tabletop games still require some level of skill in order to succeed. I’m thinking this is more a job for a LOTR marathon.
I feel like a bit of weeding may reveal the root of the problem.
With Zephry Sanctum round two they added more difficult crystals. I got all the easy ones (or the top tier anyway), but punted on trying to get to all the hard crystals because some where just not worth the tick on the wall. Maybe have 30 easy coins and 10 hard coins letting casuals go for one and he hard core go for both. And let the top tier by 100% of both, not 99%.
Now that’s a reasonable compromise.
You know what, Anet? I’ve changed my mind. I agree with the OP. It’s not fair to force players to find every last coin for the achievement. They should only have to find 30/34. While we’re at it, I think it takes too long to find all the PoIs for the map completion achievement. No fun, not fair. Everyone just looks at the map instead of looking for them. We should only have to find 688/723. Also, level 80 is too hard to reach. Could you lower the level cap to 77? This will prevent people from reading up on the best ways to level a character, which is bad. In addition, it’s unfair to make players collect 5000 AP for the massive achievement chests and titles. After 4423 points it gets boring and un-fun. You need to lower the threshold. Don’t you realize you’re making people look up achievement guides and alienating casual players? By the way, Legendaries take far too long to get. It’s not fun or fair. I’m basically being forced to look up the recipes instead of experimenting. You should definitely add them to a merchant so we don’t look up information on their creation.
I don’t think I’d consider myself “Hardcore.” I still haven’t finished the achievement myself, but I’m enjoying the hunt. I just think it’s important the everyone remembers what achievements really are. They’re not core content, they’re not a gate for anything, and they’re not geared toward casual players, aside from the occasional “Congrats, you opened your inventory!” achievement. Achievements are meant to add replayability and difficulty for the more dedicated players who are willing to commit more time to honing their skills and solving puzzles. If someone has a desire to complete all the achievements, then fantastic! They have a bit of a completionist streak, like me, and this game caters to that side of players very well. However, in order to satisfy that completionist streak, they’re going to need to go above and beyond the call of duty, so to speak. That’s the way it is and should be. If someone doesn’t want to take the time to hunt down that last coin, they need to be satisfied with their 25 coin achievement and forget about that extra 3 AP.
Map completion in GW1 was similarly painful (nothing like GW2), but there was a small amount of leeway. You could have 100% map completion even while missing a small town, just because the experience was so painful to get.
I actually always hated that part of the cartographer achievement. I always felt like there might be something I was missing because it said 100% when it wasn’t really 100%. Bugged me like crazy.
I have to admit, functionally prohibitive bugs like this should really be a priority fix. Especially when you consider how much critical discussion is revolving around the achievements in general (though I feel this is undeserved and they have been doing a good job). I’m glad I stumbled upon this thread, as I was unaware of the bug before and probably would have wasted a lot of time tonight trying to get the achievement.
I think that’s what Carighan means by effectively. It’s understood you’re not literally requesting that the final tier be removed. It’s that, in effect, by creating extra coins you are saying there is no final tier reward for anyone who finds all of them. In practice, it’s basically the same idea.
Thanks very much for the answer!
I hated Forgal, and I think Taimi is better than Tybalt.
Well, lots of people thought Twilight was high-art, so..
Aaaaand lots of people initially criticized LOTR for being pedantic and anemic. Your point?
(Referring to the books, Naus. Just so’s ya know.)
I know she’s a pretty obscure character, but Explorer Smatti in Risewild Hills has some of my favorite VA in the game. I’m curious about who provided her voice, but more than that I just want to extend my compliments to the one responsible.
I’m all for killing off the lovebirds and saving the other three. Rox and Braham are the only ones who are not a constant Deus Ex Machina, so they don’t feel cheap. Plus, Charr/Norn rom-com, anyone? Taimi is a get-out-of-trouble-free card, and can definitely be obnoxious or a liability sometimes, but is at least a non-generic RPG Hero. She’s uniquely written and should definitely stay. Margarine and Cat-Smear need to be bumped for better characters. I vote for Explorer Smatti, but only because I love her voice actress.
Kill the wolf attacking it quickly, then wait around for it to walk there. It also spawns in the same place every time.
Sorry, this is just wrong.
The separate idle animations is a good idea and would help the story telling a lot honestly.
It could even be extended to the player by tying it to the personality system they have making the animations which fit who/what the character is supposed to be like.http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Personality
Would really make all the characters feel like they had a lot more depth personally as well as improving story telling/immersion.
+1000 to this. I want to feel noble, kitten!
This is just great. I may have to set it as my BG.
Totally on board with separate animations, though between those and the idle quotes/default response, I find the speech much more intrusive. Can’t stand it when, in the midst of some epic discovery, one of them pipes up with an obnoxiously cheery “What can I do for you?”
I personally am a fan of another theory I’ve read here on the forums. Not that Taimi will end up as an opponent, but that we’ll discover some hidden weaponry Scarlet was developing to kill Mordy and Taimi will be the only one capable of using it or adapting it since she’s followed Scarlet so closely.
At least, I’m a fan of that theory until that hidden weaponry turns LS:S2 into another Zhaitan. :/
This whole thread…. it’s just too amazing.
Jennah is Psylocke.
But the original British Schoolmarm Psylocke, of course.
everyone thinks their own engi is best named?
Yes. Yes I do.
Considering I require 1 more Dive point for Dive Master (World wide) and also considering that they tie Achievement points to such dive locations (Dive Master, Prospect Valley) is it truly optional? If they tie achievement points to eye/hand coordination is it fair to others that lack that twitch skill? If they want to make it truly optional then give a title for it without the achievement points.
Achievements are always, always 100% optional. They are generally additional sets of circumstances under which to complete a task in order to increase difficulty and replayability. If all achievements were easily obtained by every player, they wouldn’t be achievements. They’re there to recognize and reward players who put enough effort in to get them. That effort may take the form of an investment of time or gold, puzzling out some sort of riddle, or honing their skills in order to complete a more reflexive task. If you can’t be bothered to make the same investment, you under no circumstances deserve the achievement. So yes, it’s fair.
Yeah, it’s been totally removed. At least for now.
Besides needed to farm the blade shards, the spinal blades backpiece is pretty cheap to build.
Silky sand is supposed to be annoying and largely useless, guys. It’s a flavor item. When you’re in Dry Top, everywhere you go and everything you do causes sand to get into your bags, and every so often you have to stop and clean the sand out.
It’s a little bit annoying, but it’s totally appropriate to something you would have to do while running around in a desert tundra, and very infrequently you find something good in the sand as a bonus.
I can’t believe this never occurred to me. This is so perfect, I… I just… I can’t…
I love ’em. Give me frequent cause to use my M2 key.
I’m posting just to break the chain of "V"s.
Idunno, I’m with OP here. Crafting materials are one thing, but as far as consumables go, how desirable the function is should dictate the price. I’m not saying no one would necessarily want while-downed buffs. Just that if no one wants it, then no one is going to pay 24 silver for it, regardless of how expensive the ingredients are. I’m guessing the listings don’t accurately reflect activity. If you’ll notice, the highest buy order is around 11.2 silver, a considerably lower price. That’s a better, but still not perfect, reflection of what players are willing to pay for it.
Yeah, saw that. Just think it could have been a really fun aspect of the release if you could use chicken feed to lure chickens into an existing twister.
Ataaaaaaack of the Killer Chickenaaaadoooooos
Well, I guess that’s not it. What a shame, could have had a really fun mechanic there.
Well you must have one of those lucky accounts, cause I’ve gotten maybe 1 ascended recipe and 1 of the new helms out of 20-25 chests. And getting lockpicks isn’t that easy (unless you trade the geodes for them). I think out of probably at least 2 (possibly 3) stacks of the sand, I’ve gotten maybe 2 lockpicks and maybe another 1 or two from drops and thats with probably 3 days of farming the new area (two at 8ish hours and another at probably 4 due to no t4 taxis) at tier 4.
Sounds like you have a lucky account too, to me. Only unusual drop I’ve had out of 44 chests was a rare recipe, and I’m still making some nice coinage with all the mats and stuff they drop. Plus they drop lockpicks fairly often, so it’s nicely self-sustaining. I’ve only had to buy six picks so far, and at tier 3 prices. And I don’t even have time to farm!
I’ve got plenty o’ peeves, but one that had me staring in disbelief recently was the use of “archievement.” This was not a typo. It was used over and over again, by multiple posters. Do they really think there’s an ‘r’ in there? Really?
Your character is part of an organized army dedicated to destroying the elder dragons… Why would he not know their names when you have all the knowledge of the priory and whispers to draw on>?
^This^
First, I think this may be my first toy purchase from the store. It sounds awesome.
Second, has anyone tried luring a chicken into a dust mite twister? Can we create a full-sized chicken-ado? I’m at work now, but someone out there needs to try this and see if it’s possible.
