The challenge itself isn’t difficult, but the environment makes it so. With a few corrections it could be enjoyable. Right now it just makes me angry. :/

+The crosshair’s visibility could be improved.
+Plants, mobs, and NPCs block the target dummies. Other players compound this problem.
+Target dummies might benefit from a change in color or size.
+Some environment pieces, such as wooden totems, fruit baskets, and large plants, could be moved, deleted, or resized to improve visibility.
+The main problem is the adventure’s dependence on the Noble Outpost event chain. These days it’s difficult to find a server that is both completing the events and free of event bugs. On top of that, the time required to complete the even chain (95 minutes or so) doesn’t seem to be a fair investment considering the length of the window opened to complete the adventure (about 20 minutes).

These are the biggest problems as I see it. Maybe other players can add their own advice or solutions. Good luck, and have fun!

First off, gingerbread’s my jam as well. I recommend strafe-jumping on the peppermint sticks, usually gives me a better viewing angle and a more controlled jump for the shorter distance. Try to avoid starting the gift jump with a large group of people, they’ll get in your way and set off gifts beneath you. Other than that it’s pretty hit-or-miss for me on the gifts. When you pass them, be sure to dodge past the snowman at the top. Every once in a while he’ll catch you with a breeze and knock you off. I actually never even noticed it was a thing until this year, so I guess it doesn’t line up often. And don’t get greedy during the snowball course. One snowball = one dash to the next safe zone.

Apart from that, yeeaah, hate to jump on the mouse bandwagon, but I can’t really see any way to complete such a reaction and speed based puzzle without one. You say it’d kill your wrist… do you use a really low sensitivity? If you bump it up and practice small, controlled movements, your hand and wrist hardly move, even when completely reversing directions. I really do think it’d be worth the effort, unless you have an existing condition that prevents it. In that case, as has been said before, I’m afraid you’re most likely out of luck.

Karka Queen - most frustrating boss ever

HyruleanHyroe.1473

As a player who typically is guilty of being a bit of a white knight regarding GW2, I gotta jump off my horse for a moment to agree with OP. True, 30 seconds is almost certainly an exaggeration, and actually having all waypoints is of great help. Still, the fact is that for a world boss, KQ just doesn’t quite measure up. The egg tossing is really the only mechanic involved outside of straight DPS, and she does go down reeeally quickly. There have been times, especially when I’m on a different computer that not quite as fast or has a poorer connection, when I haven’t been able to make the dash for the queen before she died. Ultimately, she doesn’t feel nearly as epic as other world bosses and really needs either an upgrade or a demotion.

spoiling star wars in map chat

Not 100%, but sometimes I just wish bad bad things regarding some people in games.

So a guy is in LA spamming Star Wars spoilers. Nice.

PS: I’ve seen it already but C’MON!

Report it. Please!!

Why on earth is this reportable? So does this mean that no one can talk about any book, movie, or show that other people might not have seen because someone might get upset that it was spoiled? Or is it just new things? Or just a certain degree of popularity? Is there some special rubric to determine what is a reportable spoiler or not? Seriously, what makes someone talking about the new Star Wars movie a reportable offense?

There’s a difference between people discussing it and outright being like SO AND SO DOES SUCH AND SUCH, just to get a rise out of people.

I believe the thing will be discussed on a case by case basis, if its someone being a jerk, then yeah they deserve any reprecaution that comes their way.

It’s called having some consideration for people.

You mean.like that part where jar jar binks is swimming through space and eats the death star in one go, while like and Han are delivering R2-D2’s baby?

Right after Snape kills Yoda and it’s revealed that BB-8’s been dead the whole time, yes!

Seems to me there’s no need for it to display on the minimap at all. It’d be easier to add a list of mentors to an existing UI (LFG panel for instance) for people who need help to reference and leave the tag above their heads in-game, but why on earth does everyone in a map need to know where a mentor is?

HyruleanHyroe.1473

Getting the updrafts makes gliders really really fun. But on a serious note, it’s fun that some 10 point hero challenges are a champ fight, in which you need people, the people who are running around doing events trying to unlock masteries and you in the map chat are begging for help. I wish their was a LFG tab for each of the new maps so you could group up with people from that map and do stuff.

That’s a good point! You remind me that I thought of the same thing, though I was hoping for a category for HoT maps in general rather than one for each zone. Still, a little more separation in the LFG window could be very helpful.

It's a war - One player's perspective

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

HyruleanHyroe.1473

I am a long-time Guild Wars player; been around since Factions was released. I’ve never had huge amounts of time to put into the game, and I’ve never been one to focus solely on maxing out every stat and rushing to the end of any given piece of content, so keep that in mind.

I am approximately three and a half hours into the new content introduced by Heart of Thorns. That’s actually quite a lot for me, considering it’s only been out for three days now. I still haven’t left Verdant Brink. In fact, I haven’t made it past “The Jungle Provides” in the Personal Story. I’ve been far too busy exploring and familiarizing myself with new mechanics and systems now in place. So far, though, I’m thoroughly enjoying my experience.

First off, I am LOVING the look of everything. The cinematics are great, but especially the new areas… simply gorgeous. Even without any actual goals, I could spend literally hours just gliding around and gawking. It’s beautiful. When I first encountered the writhing roots/vines on the jungle floor, I felt genuine trepidation approaching them. I knew they would kill me, and I was scared. And then they did. It was awesome.

Second, I am happy to admit that I quickly became very frustrated at not having a glider. I knew it would have to be unlocked, and I don’t mind doing events. In fact I quite enjoy events, especially map-wide meta-events. However, it became apparent that I was going to be very limited in my exploration until I had a glider, and I was going to have a rough time finding events or groups of players without a glider to reach them. Catch-22. I found myself saying, out loud, multiple times, “How do I get around this kitten jungle? I don’t know where I’m going!” The thing is, for a player like myself who really enjoys a good story and tends to view everything that happens from a narrative perspective, this frustration was perversely enjoyable. The Commander is in the middle of a war. Not only that, but a war in wildly unfamiliar territory where an entirely different set of rules apply. That mixed sense of confusion and desperation is appropriate to the situation, and honestly deepened my immersion. I was in a new place and frantically trying to learn how to get around and survive so I could get back to battling the greatest and most imminent threat to my world, and the feeling of accomplishment and relief when I finally unlocked that glider, combined with the new-found freedom of movement, was most gratifying.

Third, THE GLIDER! It feels so good and so right to me. It seems natural, and adds such an incredible dimension to exploration that I find myself gliding at every possible opportunity, even when it’s not helpful. Hell, even when it’s undeniably UNhelpful. And that’s just with the base mastery unlocked! I cannot wait to take advantage of updrafts and dodging and all the other mechanics in store. Learning the lay of the land, mastering local techniques and knowledge, conquering the worst the jungle has to offer and eventually making it serve me… it has almost an Avatar/Dances With Wolves feel to it, don’t you think? I really enjoy it.

As for things I don’t like, most of them were solved with the unlocking of the Glider. Some things are still confusing, but I expect them to clear up as I progress, as is natural. The economy is naturally a bit wonky now, but that just means opportunities for a savvy investor. There may be awful disappointment in the future for me, and I fully expect the expansion to have some issues that need addressed for quite a while, but I haven’t found anything thus far. Really the worst thing about the content right now in my opinion is the in-game grouchiness. I know for a fact that this community is a great one, and such an unbelievably vast majority of the players I’ve encountered in the past have been perfectly friendly and helpful people that it’s truly disheartening to hear such unhelpful attitudes in-game. The forum is a fantastic place for airing those concerns, or even just venting frustrations, but I think it’s important to remember that there are hundreds of other players in-game with you, and any non-productive tearing down of the game isn’t going to help any of them enjoy their experience. Why not offer some advice instead? Or even caution against a portion that wasn’t enjoyed/was too difficult/is currently broken?

Before I wrap up, just a reminder to those who are unhappy with the expansion: all of the above is the opinion of one person, and as such is neither a command that all of you feel the same way nor susceptible to factual disproving. Please feel free to express how you feel differently, but please do not try to tell me that my enjoyment of this content is wrong. Or at least make it funny if you do.

TL;DR
I enjoy the sensation of learning about a new environment and the glider is great. Thank you Anet for making at least this player happy.

and i wont pay that amount out for an expansion,to but an expansion for the price of a full game is kittened and i guess i be with gw2 and will refuse to buy this or any content, just another example of game makers getting greedy.

It’s hardly Anet’s fault that ‘your understanding’ was wrong. There’s no subscription fee, and that’s it. Was true, is true, will continue to be true. They’ll continue to offer living story content for free. No one ever said expansions were free as well.

If you won’t pay $50 for an expansion, that’s your call, but it’s hardly unusual for a new expansion for an MMO to cost $50.

High risk....no rewards?!

HyruleanHyroe.1473

I don’t want to dismiss this issue at all, and as one of the many unfortunates who’s never seen a precursor drop I’d love any excuse to get more consistent high-end loot, but I have one issue with this thread. Many people are arguing for the implementation of a token system, so that even if random drops don’t favor you, you can eventually trade tokens for that skin you’ve got your eye on. My question is, isn’t that more or less what gold is? We all earn currency by playing, and if we play enough we can use that currency to purchase the item we want from the TP. I don’t see the difference, apart from tokens creating yet another currency to keep track of or item to take up space in our inventories, and the TP keeping gold in player hands (mostly)..

I do like and support the whole reward track idea. It’s like a more material take on the experience bar, and definitely creates a feeling of progression and recognition for your accomplishments.

Is gw1 still worth buying?

There are many aspects of GW1 that need to make their way over to GW2. Guild Halls, GvG combat, the vast variety of skills, and of course my personal favorite, Heroes.

I’d honestly be happy with just Guild Halls and Heroes. I always feel so alone when roaming in GW2. Finding a group is next to impossible and most of the maps are pretty empty and dead these days in open world PVE.

(I don’t know if you knew this, but Guild Halls are in fact confirmed for the expansion. I doubt you’ll ever see heroes, though, if only because, as a persistent world, the game would be flooded with a group of NPCs for every player and every aspect of the game would have to be rebalanced to account for five times as many fighters taking on every challenge. The only place it might work is dungeons, and even then they’d have to rebalance rewards.)

Since many of the complaints I’ve seen in the 2 recent rng threads have simply been “my younger second account gets better drops” I’m just going to try it for myself.

When the game goes on sale again, I’ll purchase a new account and I will try recording footage as I play either account, and then compare.

My wife’s new account doesn’t seem to get anything better than mine. In fact, it seems like I get much better loot, though that may be due to the account-wide magic find boost. I’d be interested to hear what your findings are, though I just can’t believe that the folks at Anet are all sitting in their giant armchairs, stroking one-eyed cats and “MUAHAHAHAHAAAA”-ing all day about how they kittened over veteran players with bad RNG for no reason.

I think your request is a reasonable one and support it, but every time I see one of these generalizations I have to chime in. Unless you’ve spoken to >50% of the player base and confirmed that they use weapon skills to escape, you cannot say “most people” do so.

Apart from that, I think adding a deselect keybind is a great idea and I’d love to see it implemented.

Is gw1 still worth buying?

HyruleanHyroe.1473

It’s true that Guild Wars is an AMAZING game, one that I played from the beginning until GW2 was released. It’s well worth purchasing, but ONLY if you’re willing to put a lot of time into it. It’s not nearly as casual-friendly as GW2 and takes a significant portion of time to unlock skills, perfect builds, assemble a team of Heroes/NPCs, etc. It’s definitely more strategy based (if you take the time to make your own builds rather than just copy and paste from a website) and has a noticeably different feel from GW2, which is less like a sequel and more like a different game set in the same universe, 200 years in the future. It does indeed still have a strong player base, and though they no longer add new content there is still a holiday event rotation and plenty of existing content to keep you busy. I’d buy the trilogy myself, but Nightfall is my favorite campaign. Playing the Dervish class is a blast. There are a couple of HD texture mods out there for GW, you can find them on the wiki. You’ll need TexMod to run them, but it’s super easy to navigate.

All in all, if you’d enjoy a more strategic MMO and have time to invest in it, Guild Wars is so worth your money I can’t emphasize it enough. Me, I’ve moved on to GW2 due to a busier lifestyle and less time to dedicate to gaming, but they’re both great.

Y’know, I’m kind of on board with OP. Had to venture into WvW to get my third today because I didn’t have much time. I don’t really enjoy WvW, so it was annoying. However, it wasn’t really a huge deal to kill 5 guards, so as long as there are viable alternatives to PvE I won’t whine too much. Still, Time-Specific material like that is a bit of a barrier to folks like us with limited options in play time.

But you’re only doing it for achievement points and nothing else. Are you in such a rush to get them.

Because now, without doing anything, you’re actually better off than you were under the old system. The daily is no longer a requirement for laurels. If you want specific rewards you can do them. If you want achievment points you can do them.

But without doing anything at all, you’re now better off than you were.

And today I crafted an exotic item and got 3 ectos, in addition to the free unlock.

People with no time to do dailies profit from these new dailies.

Oh I agree, it’s definitely overall better. For the most part I’m making out like a bandit. It’s like, “Well yeah, I’d like to get the reward for that task, but there’s not much I can do about it.

Getting upset with outfits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: HyruleanHyroe.1473

HyruleanHyroe.1473

How do they work as outfits, then, on all weight classes?

I love the logic I’m getting; ‘’it takes time and effort’’. By that logic, they can make wooden weapons, which would mean a new set of weapons every few days and people would be happy?

Quality OVER quantity!

I think what’s being missed here is that every armor set has to be tested and designed so each piece correctly interacts/fits with every other piece in that weight class. That is why outfits work, they only have to interact with themselves. It’s all or nothing, and they only need to make it work as an individual set. When you can mix and match the work multiplies exponentially due to clipping issues and the like, so pushing for more armor sets more frequently could only lead to simple reskins that require no further testing and no one wants that.

That’s interesting, the only 2 rational groups are the lovers or the haters.
What about the person that enjoyed the first 2 meals and got food poisoning on the third because the chef didn’t wash their hands? Wouldn’t they be rational if they stood up and complained so it wouldn’t happen again?

It’s very rational to criticize a negative experience, especially if you’re passionate about the place. It’s a good sign that people still frequent the forums even though they don’t play the game all that much, least they are still interested in seeing what comes down the pipe.

I agree with your point, thanks for pointing that out. I’d categorize those people with the first group, who I wouldn’t call “lovers” but just people who enjoyed the “food.” I suppose I didn’t account for every possible scenario in my example, but it was more about attitude than situation. I’d never insinuate that a restaurant (or Anet) is incapable of mistakes. Just as those “lovers” would visit another restaurant if they were tired of the food, they’d also speak up if their food was wrong or made them ill. A person who likes the game but complains about something that is specifically wrong or broken in order to address it is fine. We all want a game that works, and constructive criticism helps Anet achieve that. A person who attacks the type of content (or food), the quantity of content (serving size), or just every aspect of the game in general, especially if they are doing so to try to drive away new players instead of letting them form their own opinions or to get attention on the forums, is not being constructive. They shouldn’t be searching for a Chinese buffet at an Italian eatery, and certainly shouldn’t be demanding the menu be changed and screaming at new customers. As was said before, that’d be cause for calling the police.

So you wouldn’t think a restaurant was bad if you went in and ordered your food and they just kinda walked by and tossed it onto your table? I mean, you got your food you paid for, right, so who cares whether the service was nice or not?

Not a proper analogy. More proper analogy would be this, you pay for a hamburger and then expect them to give you a Kobe beef steak. Would you consider that a good business move to give everyone a Kobe beef steak for the price of a hamburger?

I’d say still not quite a proper analogy. It’s more like buying a meal plan at a campus cafeteria for several months. One large initial fee gets you all the food you need for each day. As time goes by the cafeteria adds new types of food, has specials, etc, all without charging you extra. They have certain “premium dishes” that cost a bit above and beyond the initial price, for those who want them. Some of us are happy with our cafeteria food. It’s delicious, it’s plentiful. We can spruce it up with some fancy fixin’s. If we get tired of it, we eat somewhere else. Some of us didn’t like it and never came back. Those two groups are the rational ones. Then there are the Masochists, who don’t like the food but continue to eat there every day, doing their level best to ruin the experience for everyone else and even paying extra for food they don’t want just to have something else to complain about; there are the Sadists, who like the food enough to eat three meals a day but can’t admit it to themselves because they are just the type of people who can’t publicly approve of anything, instead nitpicking about which seasonings other restaurants use and how the cheese is from Iowa instead of Wisconsin; and there are the Gluttons, who eat everything in sight as fast a possible, buy extra food, and publicly denounce the cafeteria because they’ve only been provided enough food for three meals in one sitting when clearly they need enough for five meals three times a day and how dare they not cook enough food because Do-You-Know-Who-I-AM?

You can probably guess how I feel about those three.

“White Knights,” we need to start our own guild or something. Just to be that much more annoying.

I’d join up!

Not that you would, but please don’t let forum grouches intimidate you. This game is fantastic, as a lot of people can attest to, and it sounds like you’re going to have a great time with it

If you add up all the living story added fro season 2 so far, and played it through you would probably get 3-4 hours of game play released over half a year.

I’m sorry, friend, but if you’re blowing through the full content of every release in less than half an hour, you are both an impossibly fast player and doing it wrong.

And of course there’s the fact that these holiday bits are regular, planned events that occur every year and should be no surprise to anyone save a brand new player who really should have no reason to complain if they still have the whole existing game ahead of them to play and enjoy. Try to have fun and earn some limited-time loot instead of kitten ing against the machine.

Pardon my ignorance, but are you suggesting a plugin to let you PM players/guildies, or something linked to all chat channels? Because I, for one, would get really sick of ghostly voices from another dimension filling up my chat box while I’m trying to communicate with my map.

This is probably old news, so pardon me if I’m late to the party.

I just realized that Taimi is Jimmy Neutron. This fact has forever changed me.

but but but… he’s a troll!!! He’s supposed to do that :P

Ooh! Ooh! Can we get a literal internet-style Troll boss in an upcoming update? Some sort of brute with completely OP attacks who spouts random inflammatory phrases relating to the most common complaints from whatever the current release is? I’d have a blast sissy-flailing against him while laughing my kitten off.

I don’t mind the idea of a less likeable race being added to the game

Wasn’t that the role of the Charr? Villains of the first game, turned allies against a greater threat.

Haha, I never thought so. I always viewed them less as villains and more as a wronged culture/unwitting pawns. kitten titans.

….. Korians? Really? Are we also gonna bump into the reviled ‘Chynise’ and the detestable ‘Rushians’ later on?

I very much doubt the mortals would ever ally themselves to an Elder Dragons or their minions is any major way.

This right here. I don’t understand what make the uneasy alliance between the major races and these ‘Korians’ a “forced necessity.” Why the hell would they be allowed in the pact? Why would they want to be? The pact’s purpose is to stop the elder dragons.

I don’t mind the idea of a less likeable race being added to the game (as long as it doesn’t turn into Horde vs. Alliance, ugh). I don’t think this is the way to go, though.
