A few months before Gw2 was released we knew enough to justify the price. There was a ton of content they were talking about and a huge opened world. We didnt need every last detail. I will wait to see if more content will be released that justifies the price. I most likely will buy HoT either way its not like I’m broke but it still kittenes me off that they pulled such a ugly move.
No, we didn’t. We knew what they told us, but it was all vaporware so far. The pre-purchase was available in April 2012; the game didn’t come out until August.
I get that you are dissatisfied with the what they’ve told us to-date and that’s fine. But I’m not sure why you think they are intentionally trying to pull a fast one on us. ANet has always been terrible about hyping their own successes; this is just another example.
It’s intended behavior that the dye colors stay with the armor. It’s inconvenient for leveling (as you noticed). However, it’s better for those of us who have L80s with multiple armor sets: I spent time coloring one set for dungeons and another set for PvE exploration; I don’t want to have to be stuck with one scheme for both.
Be nice if it was an option, except that’s probably costly in terms of development time.

Gw2 did come out with only 5 character slots but the amount of content that we got justified that. The amount of content we are getting, from what we have seen, is not nearly worth the price tag so we cant compare the two.
When GW2 was available for pre-purchase, we knew roughly about as much about it as we do today about HoT. That is: we didn’t know much. We were told how many profs and races, we were told how many zones (but we had no idea how large).
So, I agree, we can’t compare the two.
So why not wait until you learn enough about HoT and then decide if you think it’s worth it or not?
Personally, I have had 100s of hours of fun over the last 3 years after spending a mere US$75 (for the mid-tier original game). I expect that for US$50, I’ll get 100s of hours of fun from HoT. (Not to mention: the Living Story Season #3 will be included in the price.)
Now, it might not be the same bargain deal that GW2 was 3 years ago. Still, that’s a far cry from saying that the $50 price tag is too much, with or without character slots.
Today, the recipes are very popular because …what’s left to distinguish players now? 2 years ago, giant eyes were more plentiful because more often folks figured that they’d make a legendary first. Now, some feel that for the effort, it makes more sense to make something that no one else is likely to have.
This will change as soon as we learn more about HoT’s new skins (including perhaps/likely new legendaries) and the acquisition methods.
Plus, as others have stated, ANet is probably going to work on the supply side of things as well.
tl;dr the supply and demand for Giant Eyes will both change soon™, so it’s a temporary issue.

I don’t think they expected the reaction. It has stolen attention from the massive rebalance update coming up on Tuesday, from the Guild Halls reveal, and from the fact that we can finally pre-order/purchase (which means: they are thinking about a release date internally). All of that should be the big news dominating forums, reddit, and fanzines. Instead, folks are either criticizing ANet or defending ANet from over-the-top reactions.
I can’t imagine that they expected that.
Further, if they had considered this possible (never mind likely), there are any number of ways they could have offered the same pricing tiers that would have been likely to avoid or at least dampen the reactions. For example, if the original offer had been US$50 for HoT+character slot or HoT+base game — that’s basically the identical “price” for vets and newbies in terms of revenue (US$50 either way), but both parties would have felt they were getting “something” for “free.”
tl;dr no, I doubt it occurred to ANet that people would react (and overreact) to the prices/tiers this way.
The translucent pink oozes at the PR&T Esoterics in Metrica Province are not rendering properly. Only their alpha layer is showing. Check screenshot please.
Is that what everyone else is seeing, too? Visual “artifacts” like that seem generally confined to just one player. It can sometimes be resolved by restarting the game and more often by repairing the database:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Command_line_arguments#-repair
The game I’ve been playing sounds a lot different from the OP’s. I don’t see any sort of toxicity on a regular basis during group events, and I participated in all of Living Story #1. Dry Top improved upon those challenges and Silverwastes has done it better still (although I could have lived without the RNG grind of mordrem parts). Players come together randomly to handle substantial challenges and it’s one of the things I really enjoy about GW2.
tl;dr I think the game already encourages people to work together.
(I’m not against making guilds more useful; I just disagree about the reasons.)
I bought a character slot back shortly after launch.
I still think the expansion should come with one.
I think it’s fair that the expansion does not include a toon slot. However, I think it was a poor marketing move on ANet’s part. In their shoes, I would have offered the base tier of US$50 (as it is) and offered new players the core game (as it does already) and veterans a character slot and an extra title (“Walks Uphill in Both Directions”, a testament to how much vets have gone through).
People forget that when guild missions were introduced, the game had hardly any content for large guilds, while it’s full of content for small guilds. Pretty much every event can be done by guilds of three or more; guild missions introduced content that (at first) required 10-20 members to work together. Now, of course, we’re very familiar with the tactics for the dozen or two missions and all but the challenges can be done by 5 or fewer people.
I’m not against including guild missions that are easier for tiny guilds. However, I think it’s better for guild content to be oriented towards 20+, 50+, and even 100+ member guilds.
There are a bunch of filters that are designed to prevent common work-arounds to avoid obvious filters. In this case, the letter combinations would be
No forum filter is going to good enough to avoid false positives and yet catch all the things the moderators would want filtered.
Regardless, the current filter — poor as it is — is the one we have. It’s not that hard to find ways to work around it, so you can be shy about anything you want.

… offer an upgrade for the xpac for $30 to $35…
…
How is this not reasonable? This solves ALL problems!*
It doesn’t solve the problem of their revenue stream, which this plan would reduce by 40% for the 3-4 million players most likely to purchase the xpac.
Or do you think that lowering the price for veterans by this much will increase the number of people pre-purchasing by a lot more than 40%? I don’t know myself, because I don’t have access to any of their sales data. I don’t doubt sales would increase; I only doubt that it would increase by enough to make up the difference in price.
If you are experiencing those symptoms, it means that the game servers and your client aren’t communicating as expected. You’ll have to exit the game and restart it and hope that it connects correctly
I’m calling B.S. on this one, every person in the zone agrees that it’s borked and relogging just warps you into some mystery place with missing terrain until you WP again.
You may want to check these things out for yourself before professing your ignorance in the future.
I did check it out for myself; I didn’t experience the lag myself, although others in the zone did. You may want to avoid making assumptions about folks trying their best to help out others.
My current favorite is gw2shinies.com. It has almost every tool I was using on my own (and a few I never considered before).
Colin announced today that we’ll be able to convert ascended armor and weapons in the Mystic Forge.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Ascended-Gear-Anet-please-fix-this/5173842
Players who already own the Guild Wars 2 core game will get to choose to receive one of the following items:
That’s only a “fix” if you happen to believe that there’s something broken; not everyone does.
I agree that ANet was tone-deaf to the community by choosing the specific price points and features for each tier; I don’t agree that they set unfair prices. In other words, they did a bad job of marketing their own triumph, which does not mean they can do a good job by changing it now.
I don’t understand the rationale behind assuming that the price of a game or an expansion should be entirely based on the amount of content, as measured in some arbitrary metric, such as number of zones or professions. Most new computer games seem to enter the market at US$40-70 and most expansions at US$25-60. To me, those prices are entirely based on what players are willing to spend relative to how many units the publisher hopes to sell; they have little to do with what’s in the game or expansion.
I believe ANet’s track record is excellent: regardless of the price, ANet has always delivered thousands of hours of entertainment to me, including near 100% uptime for the game, no downtime during updates, and lots and lots of free content, with no subscription. I’m willing to bet US$50 that HoT will be the same.
So HoT could have 3 new zones or 30, 1 new prof or 10; I’m buying it because I fully expect the same high quality fun I’ve been having since launch.
For those who aren’t willing to trust ANet on this (for whatever reasons), don’t pre-purchase — wait to see what folks say about the BETA (including those with Maguuma Portals or those who did pre-purchase). If you need to, wait until the expac has been out a few months. The only thing you’ll miss is the excitement of being there on Day 1 (and the potential bugs or capacity issues that might ensue).
- Attribute points on equipment have been increased by ~30%*
Have they actually stated by how much boon duration will change? What if most stats change by 28% and boon duration increases by more? Until we know the specifics, I think it’s premature to ask for specific new prefixes or sigils or runes.
You can put 1,500 units into your material collection, if you buy all the upgrades.
The wallet is for currency, that is things that are used to purchase items from vendors. The wallet is not meant to store materials nor consumables.

Excellent news. Thanks for cross-posting, JaFW.
ANet has a major problem communicating, but I strongly disagree with the OP about what it is. I wholeheartedly approve of them rarely releasing details of what they are working on until it’s ready — there are just too many players who can’t accept that plans can and will change, depending on planning and programming issues, changes to the game environment, etc. People still try to hold to the letter of high level goals offered by ANet before GW2 was announced.
So, I think the communication issue is that ANet does not really know how to hype their own product. They over-market minor things (e.g. home instance portal) and downplay huge things. They announce GW2/HoT the same week they are going live with the biggest rebalance the game has seen to date (arguably bigger than anything that happened during GW1 days), affecting all professions, all trait lines, etc. They chose prices and tiers for HoT that invite controversy, diminishing the big news…that the game’s first expac is on sale! (Worse, nearly any poster to these forums could have told them that, fair or not, those tiers/price points would create insanely distracting controversy.)
tl;dr Yes, ANet communicates poorly. I think the OP has it wrong, though: the type of communicating advocated wouldn’t have changed what happened this week.
Hi,
As you might know map exploration is the worst feature of the game, when you did it 1, 2, 3 times you just can’t do it more it’s horrible … but you still need it … so boring, So please Anet add something in the gem store for people who already did the 100% map exploration, something to instant unlock the map can be 2000gems can be 5000gems no matter i will buy it on all my caracters and im not the only one, trust me !
PS : sorry for my english
Why do you “still need it”? Or do you mean, you just dislike having to go out an unlock waypoints for all your alt characters?
I guess if you insta-L80 a lot of alts, it could be a problem. Me? I tend to aim for at least a few levels in the open world, so I can get a chance to try out different trait/weapon/skill combinations, so it’s natural for me to run through zones, unlocking WPs while I do that.
That said, I would support a consumable that folks could buy that would allow them to unlock just strategic waypoints, e.g. any WP that is next to another zone.
PS to OP your English was fine (I had no trouble understanding your main point).
Under contract ArenaNet is offering Core + Expansion to every purchaser and only delivering Expansion to existing users.
Actually existing users can get exactly the same thing offered to first time buyers. Both get a new account with both core content and HoT included. The existing user, of course, has the option to forgo, at their discretion, the new account in favor of linking to an existing account.
I wouldn’t expect many existing users to choose not to link accounts, but the option to have exactly the same as the first time buyer is there.
Good point.
Although, to be fair to some of those criticizing the pricing, this still means that veterans aren’t offered anything for their years of loyalty. (Well, ‘nothing’ aside from a great game that has given them hundreds or thousands of hours of entertainment, which is probably how NCSOFT and most other game publishers would think of it.)
It’s not specific to EBG and Fireheart Rise per se. We’ve seen this before and (in the past), it’s turned out to be a combined problem with the ANet (virtual) server not communicating properly with players’ version of GW2. It tends to affect all the maps attached to that virtual server and sometimes (as in this case), it doesn’t affect everyone or even necessarily all instances of the map.
I believe you can work around it by guesting until you get a new IP.
I’ve heard (without being able to confirm) that a large guild can “force a fix” by getting 100+ players into the zone, so that it caps and the game is convinced it needs to create a new instance. (As it caps, some players might represent another guild without being in a party with guildies, so that they are more likely to be sent to a new instance.) I’d like to believe this would work; I just haven’t participated in this personally.
There are a bunch of existing reports about this. You probably didn’t spot any of them because the title of the post is usually non-descriptive (such as “TP bug”).
Currently, I’m working around it as follows: I move the cursor to the “gold column” and then press “tab” to move the highlighted field to silver or copper, as needed. I can then manually type in a new number or move the mouse cursor to the field, which now works ok. Annoying, but reliable.
edit: shift-tab works to move the active cell in the reverse direction, so [tab] moves from quantity→gold→silver→copper and [shift+tab] from copper back to quantity. Unfortunately, if you overshoot, you have to start over; I have no idea what happens to the ‘focus’ after.

It’s a server-client communication issue — your skin was removed from the guild bank (a server-side action) and was moved to your inventory (also server-side), but your client delayed updating this information for… [reasons].
It happens periodically: people who are in charge of re-arranging guild inventory run into regularly, while most folks never see it (or, I guess, fail to see).
For those playing along at home, there are a couple of ways to work-around the issue:
The wiki has a good check list:
What if they disagree? What if they care about players but still think they priced the game like any other expansion.
I’m not saying ANet did a great job of pricing or marketing (I don’t think they did). I am saying that reasonable people can disagree about what is fair.
Plus, even if everyone at ANet agreed with you that they should discount the price by US$10 for veterans (or add something worth about that much to the basic tier), they couldn’t possibly announce it immediately, let alone make it happen instantly. At the very least, they have to consult with their providers for how to make it happen, get sign off from NCSOFT (whose shareholders would be expecting the original pricing scheme), and hire enough Customer Service personnel to handle all the requests that might come in as a result.
since i bought 4 × 20 slot fractal exotic equipment bag the inventory command “compact” is not working. i’ve tried to change bags’ order or combine 2-3 fractal bags with normal ones but still not working
The “compact” command has no effect on the items inside a specialty bag, which includes all of the bags purchased with fractal currency. The command only works on ordinary bags.
This is a big advantage if you want to have items remain in the same inventory slot after compacting and a big annoyance in other situations. Consequently, I only use fractal bags on toons that don’t “compact” often (i.e. mules).
Eh, while I strongly disagree with the OP about whether there’s an issue, I don’t think it’s “childish” to be upset that the price appears to be “out of reach” for the OP. As the OP correctly points out, the cost of creating the back pack already makes it a luxury item, so it’s somewhat of a mystery why ANet decided to short the supply of recipes (or at least, not introduce a new source for them in 2014).
We can’t know the extent of the impact until the patch hits. And even if we did, ANet would have to stop the patch to make any changes in the amount stats are affected and/or the availability of certain types of ascended stats.
Personally, I would prefer to see a different system, one in which we could pick the the stats directly (instead of memorizing an arcane nomenclature of names-to-stats) and one in which it was easier to update stats in ascended gear than in exotic (whereas it’s easier to change exotic stats right now). In the meantime, though, we can make good use of the system going live on Tuesday (Pacific Time).
I always thought that the tax was a flat one, around 25%. Looking at spidy however, and it looks like it is now days it is around 50%.
Nothing has changed. There’s a flat rate of 15% in both directions, which is the same for “selling” anything on the trading post (5% listing fee, 10% sales tax), since you “sell” gems (for coin) or you “sell” coin (for gems).
What has changed,
Nothing.
and wasn’t this supposed to be market based, supply and demand?
Still is.
With the guild halls, changes on chats, influences and etc. I wonder will there be a free transfer before or during HoT like back during GW2 launch?
The reason you could transfer for ‘free’ at launch was that they hadn’t enabled guesting yet. There was no way for people on World A to play with those on World B in the open world; you could only do so in instances (personal stories or dungeons, the only kind at the time).
If you recall, before launch, they had a schedule of fees for transferring and around launch, they waived it. Once guesting was enabled, the transfer fees applied. (As I recall, there was a grace period of about a month after the announcement, when you could still transfer for free.)

If you want a refund, ask for one. However, I don’t see how anyone can say whether the expansion is overpriced or underpriced. All we can say is that it costs US$10 less than the original game cost at its release and that it’s more than some expacs of other franchises.
Personally, I think ANet has always delivered great value for my money and I’m inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt. I don’t care if the game has 1 map (with 3 biomes) or 50 maps (with 1 biome) — I care that it generates hours of compelling gameplay.
For me, $50 is about as much as I can spend on games for the whole year and I’m willing to plunk it on HoT. If you don’t think it’s worth it, sure, ask for a refund.
The wallet is used for things that are currencies, i.e. that are used to purchase something. It isn’t meant to cover every single occasional-use consumable.
Buyer beware. There is evidence it reduces the amount of ore you get in exchange for the watchwork sprocket drops.
http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/1wfp5r/watchwork_pick_looking_for_data/
That post doesn’t actually provide any specific data, so I don’t know how one could draw that conclusion. Regardless, sprockets have been consistently worth >2.5s, which is more than any ore except orichalcum. Unless you only mine ori, you’ll still profit.
It’s the only infinite use tool that can pay for itself eventually. For those who farm rich nodes every day, that could be as little 5-6 months at current sprocket prices for a heavy farmer. However, for most of us (who will farm a lot for a short period and then get bored), they probably won’t pay for themselves. Still, reduced-cost pick is better than a full-priced one.
tl;dr I highly recommend them for anyone considering an infinite-use tool.
It’s unclear, Provost, and I doubt if we’ll find out enough information before launch to decide whether it’s more efficient to create a new guild now or then.
It’s not very expensive to buy influence with gold to create a guild with 50 slots or even 250 and it doesn’t take that long (especially if you have a few friends rep the guild while you do daily dungeons or silverwastes together). So, I’d recommend you do it now.
At worst, you gain the benefits of the extra space now and forever after. If you don’t need the space later, you can invite a friend and give the guild to them (which is what I did way back when I needed the guild slots more than the inventory slots).
My bank has a deal: new customers can get $100 for creating a new account of a certain kind, exactly like the one I have — I get nothing for maintaining my account.
My ISP has a deal, for new customers only. My mobile phone carrier has a deal, for new customers only.
It’s not that unusual for businesses to offer incentives for new customers that aren’t available to existing ones.
Mind you, I think ANet made a huge tactical mistake in doing so — there are dozens of posts about the PRICE and hardly any from people excited for the expansion. I always find it amusing when people accuse ANet of overhyping things, because this is yet another example of how terrible they are at hyping the most exciting things that they have done.
tl;dr nothing wrong imo with ANet’s price points or incentives for new players. Still, they made a big mistake in their choices.
We don’t know how big Verdant Brink is. We don’t know how many other maps. We don’t know if Verdant Brink is typical or small compared to other HoT maps.
In terms of value for my dollars/pounds/euros spent, ANet’s track record has always been good. I don’t blame people for wanting to wait to see more, even if I don’t understand the outrage. Don’t want to spend US$50? Don’t spend it.
the map key is always in the same spot, however for some reason it doesn’t always trigger.
You can try swapping characters or guesting to another world with the original character. Choose one that is reporting as ‘full’ to maximize your chances of getting into a new instance. You can check the instance # using the emote, /ip.
I’ve recommended this technique to everyone reporting the same symptom — in every single case, they were able to get the key.
If you are experiencing those symptoms, it means that the game servers and your client aren’t communicating as expected. You’ll have to exit the game and restart it and hope that it connects correctly (as it does for most players).
It’s true stuff like this should not happen. It’s also true that things don’t always work as planned. (And yes, I also hope this means that ANet is learning from mistakes rather than learning how to make more mistakes.)
Pet names are the Ranger hobosack.
Sure, so it’s probably on their radar to do. On the other hand, it might (or might not) be more complicated and/or more effort than hobosack-removal was or that change might have dovetailed with other things going on.
So again, the point is it’s one of many good ideas out there and not necessarily near the top of the priority list.
New patch up, but BLTC interface still bugged beyond annoyance.
The BLTC uses html/css; I don’t think they need to patch the game to work on it.
As I understand it, /block isn’t designed to protect us from stalkers. If someone is stalking you, ANet wants us to report them (via a Support Ticket) so that they can take action.
The current feature definitely needs some improvement, except I don’t think this proposal would be the best use of limited resources.
Cue in the legendary owners that will come complaining their “hard” work would be devalued.
To be fair, it would be. It is more expensive and more time consuming to obtain a legendary.
An alternative to the drop-down for ascended gear would be offering mystic forge recipes that allow conversion. Instead of old gear becoming useless, you could transform it instead. e.g. old ascended + spirit shards + vision crystal +
- T6 blood: zerker
- T6 totem: cleric’s
This would leave legendaries special (by allowing easy stat changes) while still offering up a simple and “reasonably” low-cost method of switching stats.
Another alternative would be to offer legendaries the chance to swap sigils.
I was farming for my legendary when they were fixed stats of the same level as exotics :o I stopped doing it when they were better with free stat change.
A “low cost” method of switching stats that cost THAT much in mats is in no way conductive to build experiments by players. This sucks really :/
“That costs that much in mats” — what? Right now, to experiment in exotics or ascended, you have to buy an entire new set. My proposal is to make it cheaper to change ascended stats. In fact, I deliberately left the numbers blank to avoid exactly that sort of issue, i.e. whether the “price” is too low or too high.
There’s still no better spot than silverwastes for the things you want in a single farm. Some argue that chest farming is more efficient overall, some say it’s aggressively changing maps to do breaches/vinewraths (and skipping most of the build up).
Another popular choice is Edge of the Mists (which also requires getting a good map).
All other types of farming (including FGS or Southsun etc) will leave out one or more items from your list.
Content has been designed around exotic, not around ascended. The introduction of core specs isn’t changing that.

Just a reminer that this haven’t been fixed. Annoying just closing inventory and opening it again to see it smaller in size, I don’t know what is causing it but it’s clearly a bug, and it’s not even being looked into.
I’m not sure why you think they aren’t looking into it. It’s difficult to nail down because it can’t be replicated on demand, which is one of the things they need to do to validate any potential fix.
Hey though, it would be nice to save names. But I just don’t think it’s a big deal.
I think it’s a pretty big deal.
Sure, and you’re not alone in thinking that. However, you might also notice that there are plenty of others who disagree and think it’s merely “nice to have” or even “completely unnecessary” (some of whom even have rangers as main characters).
From ANet’s point of view, therefore, it’s a large undertaking (modifying or creating a database to handle remembering the names or even retrieving names stored client-side) and the result is a quality-of-life improvement for a tiny subset of the community. In other words: high cost/risk and minor benefit.
There are plenty of good ideas out there that will never be included in the game because there are always better ideas that are easier to implement.
I have bunch of tomes and scrolls – what will happen to these in 23. patch?
As explained in the original post, scrolls will be converted into spirit shards, that will be stored in your wallet. Tomes will remain tomes with the same function for sub-L80 toons.
