Items missing in the mail?

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There was a brief systemwide outage earlier. Mail and trading post lagged for a while. Some things I sold didn’t show up in “items I’m selling” nor “items I’ve sold” and there was no cash waiting for me…but after 30-60 minutes, everything cleared up. Mail has been slow for me since that outage.

If the items are really gone from your friends inventory, then I suspect that they are stuck in the mail queue. Assuming you’ve deleted most of your other player-to-player mail in your inbox and you have received other mail from the same person, I think you are going to need to ask for help from the Support team.

I recommend that your friend file the ticket, since she sent the item (and that’s the first place Support should start looking).

Good luck.

I agree that ANet could make things less ambiguous by using 23:59 = 11:59 PM or 00:01 = 12:01. Using “midnight” is always going to confuse someone.

One could also argue that 1999→2000 wasn’t the start of the new millennium, since technically that would be 2000→2001 as there was no “year 0.” But the fact is people aren’t computers and they believe what they believe. Arguing the “facts” of grammar/dictionary definitions is largely a losing battle (unless you are a copy editor); it’s usually best to phrase things to avoid the ambiguity.

Regardless, this amounts to a suggestion, rather than a bug — you’re more likely to get action on it if you place the idea in the suggestions section.

Why The Economy is Borked

in Black Lion Trading Co

Illconceived Was Na.9781

I don’t agree with the original problem statement. When there’s a large gap between the lowest WTS and the highest WTB, speculators will enter the market, attempting to make money off that difference. The bigger the gap, the more people that will try to use this as an easy way of buying low and selling high.

That ultimately drives the WTS prices lower (each speculator undercutting the others to sell quickly) and drives the WTB higher (each speculator trying to obtain enough product to sell). This will drive that product to a new equilibrium more quickly than any sort of proposed “government regulation.”

Since I don’t agree that there’s a problem, I can’t support any of the proposed changes.

Why do NPCs focus "downed" players?

I’ve taken to building in more durability to kit and traits rather than more damage. This had reduced the number of times I’m downed, decreasing the likelihood I’m defeated. I agree it’s no fun being defeated, but it’s also less fun for me if I don’t have to outsmart the AI — I like it that the foes are smart enough to go after low health and downed targets; that’s exactly what players do to reduce threats in PvE and PvP.

At the end of “Beneath the Waves,” (Sylvari personal story) you have to unlock some cages. There’s a very narrow range of spots you can be to get the “Unlock [F]” message. I need to spam movement keys, jump, and [F] until I lucked upon the ways to open cages for the Sylvari and the Asuran. (For the Hylek Ehutl, if you stand just so, you can open that cage.)

The locks seem to be just above the ground level of the cages and it’s not clear if that action has priority over talk/greet.

Weekly Bot/Gold-seller Reports

Illconceived Was Na.9781

A lot of people are under the impression that ANet isn’t banning accounts for botting or gold selling. My impression from reading posts by Gaile and other employees is that ANet bans accounts for those activities regularly.

A lot of people (on the forums, on Reddit, in game, and elsewhere) are despairing that they are wasting their time reporting these accounts.

It would go a long way towards combating the perception of inaction by ANet if, every week, ANet could publicly report that it has banned X-number of accounts for gold selling and Y for botting (or even just Z for both).

I assume that bots and scammers will keep returning as long as there are enough players willing to use their credit card to pay them for in-game coin.

For now, you can create multiple groups of 5 or less and then have each group call a target on a member of one of the other groups. That doesn’t make them easier to see on the mini map, but each group will be able to find the other group by scanning the environment.

(My guild regularly does this when we have 2+ parties out.) It’s a work-around , but gets the job done.

Bot invasion

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Illconceived Was Na.9781

ANet bans bots all the time and new bots take their place. They don’t always ban accounts immediately after a report; they like to observe known bots for a while to document their behavior.

A lot of bots are run by human beings working under sweat-shop like conditions. They don’t have any trouble authenticating a color or texture pattern every 15 minutes to keep the bot account active.

The only thing that will stop bots is when players stop doing business with 3rd party gold sellers. As long as people are willing to use their credit cards to pay for virtual gold, bots will continue to farm for loot in every game. All the producers can hope to do is keep them to a minimum.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Sale items: I don’t see that there’s a problem having items up for two weeks or longer. I’ve listed some stuff that I don’t expect to be worth much until October; I’m content to wait.

But there’s a bigger issue with automatically setting prices: this has unexpected impacts on the economy and can be manipulated by shrewd traders: anyone can hope to get lesser prices by simply listing an item repeatedly at a discount rate; those who are wealthy will gain from this and those who have less will not.

Instead, ANet could make it easier to relist an item at a lower price. Currently, you have to remove the listing and repost; they could add an “edit” button instead (same listing fee though).

Trade Flipping: you already cannot post an offer for less than 1c above vendor value; most of those listings are there because they were entered before that feature was added. Perhaps they could be removed by ANet.

However, there are a lot of people selling items for more than vendor value, e.g. selling Grand Master Training manuals for 2.5-3g (although they are available in every city for 2g). I think this is people trying to take advantage of other people’s ignorance, but I don’t think ANet needs to act to prevent it. People need to learn to check the wiki and the TP before listing a buy or sell offer.

Monthly achievement-experience survivor

It takes less than 1-2 hrs to max this for the monthly by following events in an L50+ zone. I ended up getting this by accident by following a friend working on map completion: reached a new tier in one zone, zoned (forgetting I would lose everything), and then maxed in the next zone.

I’m not sure whether ANet intended for the game to reset your progress when you zone; I suspect they didn’t and this will be fixed as soon as more serious (i.e. game blocking) issues are addressed.

With regards to the other ideas, I like one and perhaps don’t understand the other:

  • You should be able to see current progress on the title: /xp, /experience, and /exp are good choices to show XP gained since the last death.
  • I don’t understand what you mean about tiers: the monthly achievement is a higher tier achievement; you get rewarded once for it. I don’t see that there should be four different rewards. (You can already get 30 lesser rewards by meeting the lesser requirements for Daily Achievements.)

Block, Report, and Auto-unblock

I’d like to have an option to automatically do three things:

  1. Block an account
  2. Report the account for gold selling
  3. Later, if the account is determined to have been a legitimate, but hacked account and is unbanned, to also unblock it.

Actions 1 & 2
Here’s the scenario for the first two actions above:

  • You see classic spam in /map chat advertising a gold seller/real money trader.
  • You /report them (for “scamming,” although “gold selling” would be a more helpful choice)
  • You /block them so that you stop seeing the spam.

Next steps

  • ANet suspends/bans the account.

The Third Action
The purpose of the third action is to deal with this result:

  • In some cases, it turns out that this was a legitimate account that has been hacked,
  • ANet restores ownership & unbans the account.
  • Unfortunately, there’s no way for you to know that your /block is no longer necessary and can be removed.

Do guilds transfer to new home servers when the GL transfers?

You’re right about how it works for overflow (I forgot about that), so you’re probably also right about how guesting will work, even though we don’t know for certain yet. But that’s still a disincentive to guesting, in terms of influence accrual. Either the home world loses out or the guest world loses, unless both worlds get the increased influence of multiple guildies cooperating.

ANet hasn’t really articulated why they think it’s important to divide influence in this way, so it’s hard to know whether posts like this are, erm, influencing their thinking on the topic. We do know they changed other things based on player feedback, so I’m hoping that they realize how much the current mechanic hurts smaller guilds.

Stay away from the high-supply items, if you want to make money. Sure, some things appear to be in near-infinite supply, but far more things are in high demand. People are still buying up all the “activators” they can find (vials of blood, scales, teeth, bones, etc).

A speedy economy helps everyone: you no longer have to farm for specific items, you can do anything you like that increases your wealth…and then buy what you want on the TP. And no more waiting around.

The universal TP is also better: if we depend on supply & demand per world, we are at the mercy of relatively small groups of people who organize to create artificial surpluses or shortages; it’s nearly impossible to do that now (at least, for more than a few items). It also means that we can buy just about anything right now (if we want to spend more) or wait until our offer price is met (and vice versa for selling: sell now for less cash, wait for price to be met for more).

I’m willing to bet that most of the concerns about the trading post fade away as people get more comfortable making it work for them.

No credit for Big Boss Event?

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

This is working as intended, sadly. Currently, event participation is measured in DPS.

I keep seeing people saying this, but it doesn’t match my experience. I’ve gotten gold participation for events that I supported (rather than added to the damage). I’ve gotten bronze in events for which I thought I was one of a few participants and thought I was doing more damage.

I’m not saying damage is irrelevant to the credit (or appearance of the chest), but I suspect it is much more complicated than a simple question of how much damage did you inflict.

It would be helpful if ANet provided some guidelines: does damage count for the majority of credit? Does it help to revive? Does it help more to rez from defeated? Does blocking or healing count at all?

Allow saving multiple weapon sets for use outside combat.

in Suggestions

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Allow saving multiple weapon sets to be used outside of combat.

Typically, a lot of people use 3-4 sets of weapons:

  1. For running. Includes more speed bursts or distractions for foes along the way.
  2. For quick combat. Something to get the job done quickly, when the risk is low.
  3. Boss or event combat. Something with more durability.
  4. Special circumstances. A few skills that work great in one situation, but not another.

Right now, it’s tedious to switch repeatedly, especially when you have collected other, similar weapons along the way. Sure, some people would use this to add a few more slots to inventory, but in the long run, it’s not going to slow down the demand for runes of holding, extra bag slots, or storage toons.

Ideally, you could cycle each set (for the six professions that can run two during combat) via a key, but it would also be okay to go into the hero panel to swap; that would still be easier than the manual situation we have now.

Can’t happen. You wouldn’t use their glorified 15% fee on sold items. NEVER TOUCH THE GOLDSINK… but don’t worry in exchange they gonna explain you that it’s for your safety and you should use mail if TP doesn’t appeal to you. facepalm

This is a narrow view of trading. It’s trivial to make more on the trading post despite the 15% in fees. Why? because you have an infinite amount of time to sell to 1,000 times the number of potential customers. If you’re a buyer, why risk the 0.1% chance of getting scammed to save a few silver?

The trading system prevents scamming (except via exploits, but only patches fix that), it is more convenient for buyers and sellers, it is simple to use, and, for those who want to, it’s also easier to save/make money.

Trading Post

  • 1,000,000 customers on the trading post.
  • Available 24/7.
  • Post once, wait for results.

WTS/WTB

  • 500-1,000 customers at most.
  • Not all of them are reading /map chat.
  • Not all of them are potential customers.
  • Every sale requires multiple posts: advert, question & answer, and transaction.

Do guilds transfer to new home servers when the GL transfers?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Honestly, it doesn’t make sense to me at all.

It’s anti small guild (quality over quantity).

  • If a guild is 1,000 people, 500 on each world, no problem; they can afford to build everything twice.
  • However, a small guild (20 on each world) is crippled three times: they have to pay twice as much for the same upgrade, they don’t get twice the benefit, and they earn influence more slowly.

It’s anti-cooperation: there’s a disincentive to guest to the second world, since it would decrease influence gain in the first.

It’s inflexible: if a guild wants to change worlds for whatever reason, they have to pay per-person gem costs and rebuild all the upgrades (Well, no gem costs today, but there will be soon enough.)

I understand the idea of a RL social organization having to build their clubhouse in each city they have members in, but this isn’t RL. This is a game that ANet claims is focused on building the community…and this mechanism creates disincentives to growing the community across worlds.

I’m of two minds about this:

  • It’s a choice that guilds can make. I tend to think that a lot of guilds will die from misuse/misapplication of the tax.
  • It seems like the most anti-community tool ANet could add; it’s regressive (affects new & poor players more). Plus, there are already tools that allow the guild to increase influence gain.

I’d like to see clarification on the problem that guilds have that would be solved by a guild tax. Perhaps there are other solutions. Taxes are useful for top-down structures, but make it harder to develop grassroots organizations.

  • Not enough influence? Add more boosters to the game.
  • Trouble supporting guild crafters with supplies? That can and should be solved by social and organization changes.
  • Trouble supporting newbies with kit? Again, that’s a social and organization issue.

Guild capacity

Illconceived Was Na.9781

That’s fair. The current system rewards working together (a party of five guildies earns influence more than twice as fast as five people working by themselves). But normalizing the per-member costs should be ok:

  • Guild Storage: same price, since number of slots is the same for both large and small guilds.
  • Banners: add a moderate charge: they could impact more players, but depends on how they are used.
  • Guildwide bonuses: those provide 100 times more benefit to a 1,000 player guild over a guild with 100, so maybe they should cost a lot more for the mega guilds.
  • Upgrades: probably should also be more (e.g. researching L4 politics).
  • Accelerating progress: that’s a lot easier for large guilds to pay for. Maybe a modest scaling for this, too.

Guild capacity

Illconceived Was Na.9781

There are balance issues. Pinkeh’s guild is sitting on 120k influence surplus, while my guild (which has to split into US and EU worlds) is going to require 3-4 weeks just to bring both “charters” into equity. So, yes, banding together in bigger groups has advantages…and therefore handicaps those who prefer to be in small guilds where everyone knows each other.

However, I would prefer that ANet handle this by allow guilds of up to, let’s 10,000 people and nerfing the influence gain (and/or require that larger guilds spend somewhat more on upgrades — after all 10% +xp for 50 guildies is a lot less than +10%xp for 1,000).

It might be the case that the current coding for the guild interface presents some scaling issues. During headstart and since, we’ve since problems with being able to invite people, whether they can rep the guild, or whether they have access to guild services (not to mention the confusion with upgrades and influence being restricted to the home world of the member). If so, it would be helpful if ANet were to let us know.

However, I would like to see a couple of buttons to do this:

  • 100 gems (shows the current coin required; disappears after 10-20s; works even if you don’t have any coin)
  • 100 silver (same idea for the gold tab)

The one-click allows players to realize that prices are dynamic and rapidly changing, while still providing clear/concise data …and without requiring the players to own gems or coin to see the stats.

It might be associated with people being on different worlds (especially cross data center worlds, e.g. Anvil Rock (US) vs Blacktide (EU) ). But not everyone on a different world (or different data center is affected).

In addition, I sometimes cannot send email (neither via account nor character name) or in-game whispers. Other times, I can send, but they cannot reply. Or I can email, but not whisper…and so on. It’s also inconsistent: some days, I don’t have any problem contacting that particular person.

If it’s a bug, I don’t mind waiting for a fix (annoying, but we can often work around it by emailing a third person). On the other hand, if it’s an account issue, I’ll submit a ticket right away (I don’t want to add to their queue unnecessarily if it’s not).

Account-wide Dyes

Illconceived Was Na.9781

ANet originally planned dyes to be account wide. They changed that during the summer, stating that they thought limiting the selection for each character would provide more individuality across all players and each character.

Some players thought this was camouflage to generate more income from gems (since it would increase demand for dye packs). I disagree: it’s cheaper to buy the dyes you want from the trading post. (Nearly all fine dyes are available for a low price.)

Originally, I was against this idea for most of the reasons stated above (inconvenient, hard to keep track, etc.). Now, I’m a fan: this caused me to think about a design for each character fitting to their role or default appearance.

Also, consider the situation in 3-4 months: everyone is going to naturally acquire dyes and have a substantial fraction unlocked. If GW2 used account-wide dyes, then there would be nothing more to do. I prefer to have minor goals like this that can last a lot longer than a few months or a year.

(On the other hand, I would be interested in being able to use gems to transfer the unlocked dyes from a deleted character to a re-rolled one; starting from scratch in this game is really annoying.)

Make your guild more interesting and promote play and cooperation within your guild and you’ll be surprised how many people choose to represent/play your guild. It’s like cheating in a marriage. You go somewhere else to get something you can’t get at home.

I think it’s a GREAT idea, that skips on drama, and actually allows us more free choice in what and whom we play with.

Agree with this.

The current system, which allows people to rep at-will, means guilds have to focus on quality over quantity.

However, I wouldn’t mind a few tweaks. For example: allowing multiple chat channels for different guilds (so you can participate in more than one chat — this would solve some of the issues listed above). It would also help if the “Message of the Day” would display fully in the guild summary (and follow the same line-breaks or even allow some formatting: bold, italics, and bullets). This would make it easier for guilds to keep members informed without forcing people to visit external websites.

I’m against this.

The trading post works best when everyone uses it. The mail system already allows player-player trades between trusted friends. Plus: there is no way to scam or mislead people via the trading post; there are always ways to do that if PoD or P-P is enabled.

I’m also against using the mail system: I typically buy or sell more than 10 items during the day; I don’t need my mail full of trading post receipts. I also get about anywhere from 5-10 emails / day from friends. The current TP design (without any search or filtering feature) is a bit tedious, but I can see everything I’ve bought or sold in one place.

I hope ANet waits at least 9 months to let people get used to the current system before doing anything that can destabilize it (like enabling player-player trades).

Do guilds transfer to new home servers when the GL transfers?

For Shael:
Members on other worlds do not have access to any of the upgrades: no emblemer, no access to the armorer, shared storage, or weapons.

I haven’t been able to test the following:

  • After building storage on a second world, is it +50 more slots? Or is access to the same 50 from the first world? (The first possibility seems ok to me; the latter is unfair: if you spend twice as much influence, shouldn’t you get twice as much storage).
  • if you buy the emblem from the Armorer on World A, does it still display on other worlds (I can’t afford to drop that much coin on looks yet).

  1. Sometimes guild service become unavailable. This has been a bug since headstart (perhaps more than one glitch or a series).
  2. If you change worlds, none of your upgrades will be available; you have to earn the influence and rebuild for each world individually.

  • You can turn off /map chat in your chat options.
  • As people realize how much easier it is to trade using the TP, we’ll see some dropping off of WTS/WTB.

I agree it would be useful to have a better mechanism for people looking to form dungeon and event PUGs.

+1 to both ideas:

  • Make harvesting tools account bound on purchase; soulbound on use.
  • Clearly label anything that is account-or soul-bound, especially for items that can be purchased.

Please post all five numbers in the sales window before players press the submit button:

  1. The asking price. (Already shown.)
  2. The listing fee. (Already shown.)
  3. The sales tax (not mentioned).
  4. The amount that will actually be available at pickup (because, apparently, not everyone does the math).
  5. The net income (again, because not everyone does the math).

This would prevent a huge number of misunderstandings and player bitterness at seeing unexpectedly low amounts in in the pickup window (and would also reduce a number of mistaken bug reports).

In addition, it would allow players to realize that selling items at 1c above vendor price is wasteful (unless their inventory is so full and they cannot find a merchant).

Example

  • Your asking price = 4g 60s
  • Listing fee = 23s (payable now; non-refundable)
  • Sales tax = 46s (payable upon receipt; you will receive 4g 14s at pickup)
  • _________
  • Net earnings = 3g 91s (after all fees are paid)

…3g10s Listing Fee 15s.
…received 2g79s.

  • The listing fee is paid when you post. The 15s came out of inventory.
  • The tax on a 310s sale price is 31s.
  • 310-31 = 279, i.e. it’s working as intended.

Of course, ANet should post all five numbers upfront:

  • Your asking price = 4g 60s
  • Listing fee = 23s (payable now)
  • Sales tax = 46s (payable upon receipt; you will receive 4g 14s at pickup)
  • _________
  • Net earnings = 3g 91s

[Solution] How to solve the dead Trading Post?

in Black Lion Trading Co

I completely disagree. The trading post is an excellent tool.

  • Those using it as supplementary storage pay for the privilege: 5% listing fee (and risk losing items if they pay too little).
  • There’s a natural oversupply of certain items because everyone started the game in the last two weeks, so they are in the same areas, looking for the same goods (and want to get rid of the same).
  • Not everyone knows how to use it; that will change with time (today, we see lots of people selling for 1c over vendor; eventually we won’t).

I think it’s great that you can sell your Red Herring of Magnificence from anywhere in the game. Why force people to cart stuff around?

I don’t see any problem with items remaining on the TP for decades. I bought some stuff cheap now because I think it’s grossly undervalued today. I predict (or hope) that the price will increase in a month or so and at that point, people will pay my asking price. For example, any food with +magic find should probably sell for more than the 1-3c they are getting today.

The system today rewards anyone who wants to make it work. At the same time, it’s also simple enough for people who don’t care about analyzing market trends to also earn money.

Right now, there are a million or more people using the trading post; it’s going to take time for it to come to an equilibrium. In the meantime, use the opportunity to buy a lot of cheap mats for all the newbie toons that will appear in six months demanding quality, low level armor.

Phase retreat (and other teleports) won’t move you if there are intervening objects. I’ve never had it fail unless there was something behind me.

However, it will teleport me below the “ground” or into a a crevice and my character cannot move from the spot. (Some times, I can get out of it reversing the process or using another teleport, but during combat, it pretty much means I’m unable to participate until I’m killed by AOE or the battle is over and I am allowed to move to a waypoint).

Never played the game and my account is banned?

Hackers have attempted to login using credentials from email addresses that aren’t used in the game yet. ANet blocked those addresses from using the game so that your account cannot be hacked before you start playing.

If I register with me@example.com and a password of abc, and I go away for vacation for a few weeks, and someone else signs into the client with me@example.com / abc, ArenaNet isn’t going to know if it’s me or not.

If you’re saying they are blocking people from registering using email addresses that are in lists floating around, is there a link to such a post?

ANet’s posted about this topic several times. Currently on the wiki:

Hackers have lists of email addresses and passwords stolen from other games and web sites, and collected through spyware, and are systematically testing Guild Wars 2 looking for matching accounts

I probably explained it poorly. Here’s what I meant:

  • A hacker obtains credentials from FacelessBook.com.
  • They start up GW2.exe using the known address of me@example.com with the FB password.
  • This fails, because Me hasn’t yet purchased the game.
  • ANet locks out future accounts from using that address.
  • 2 weeks pass and Me purchases the game, attempting to logon using me@example.com. They find themselves locked out for goldselling (or whatever).

This is a good thing, because it means that Me will suffer a day or two of frustration in exchange for which they won’t be sandbagged later by a goldseller locking them out, stripping their account, and then allowing it to be banned anyhow. It also means that Me is more likely to create an independent email address.

Obviously, it sucks to be in that situation for even an hour, but it’s far better than the alternative

Server choice isn’t permanent right now; the transfers are going to be free for a bit still. You guys can play on any other world and keep trying to move. I recommend finding a time that isn’t peak use (I’ve been tracking worlds and none of them are listing as full 24/7; every one has a medium usage period and you shouldn’t have any trouble transferring then.) Good luck.

Gem Market Manipulations?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

If you assume that ANet has build a sales tax gold-sink into the system, I think your number make more sense:

  • Let’s say 100s = 431 gems; after a 15% tax, that would be 366.
  • Take those 366 to convert to 85s, but pay another 15% and you end up with 72s.

So if you try to churn gold → gems → gold, you need to wait for a > 30% price increase. (Which is why most people playing the market tend to invest in dye or mini packs instead.)
