Illconceived Was Na.9781

I don’t see any reason to make legendaries bound on acquire. People want to spend hours and hours making uber-weapons — why shouldn’t they be allowed to sell? People prefer to do things they enjoy and acquire gold (but not the scavenger hunt) — shouldn’t they be allowed to purchase those same weapons?

Also, the current prices aren’t indicative of the future legendary market: only a few people can craft a legendary and only a fraction of them would be willing to sell — this makes the supply tiny. Similarly, the number of people that could afford to pay premium prices to be among the first to wield a legendary is tiny. Things will change as more of us gain wealth, as ANet makes adjustments to the supply of materials required to craft, and so on.

Someone reported an interesting way to resolve the issue. They adjusted an option for their video card (yes, video). It turned out that both HDMI for the video and the on-board sound card were trying to render the game sounds and this caused a reverb effect, which amplified certain sounds (but not others).

See: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Something-to-try-for-annoying-sound-bug

Whatever your results, please post to that thread so that others can see how effective it is. Good luck.

Illconceived Was Na.9781

You can form your own team for every PvE achievement except for Toypaclypse, (which uses a “hot join” mechanic and is treated as PvP). The PvP Snowball fight also uses hot join, perhaps to prevent any small groups from dominating the event. The other achievements are either individual, e.g. making snow-people, or competitive, e.g. choir bells.

Ultimately, that means you can get 12/12 achievements for “Apprentice Toymaker” by doing all group activities with your guild.

(The same was true for Halloween and the Karka invasion: PUGging wasn’t required for those either.)

The issue only comes up if a server ends up the same color week after week. (Assuming ANet wants to keep WvW maps for map completion.) This could be resolved for making sure that never happens more than two weeks in a row. If that were true, everyone should have access to a third of each of the maps for at least a day or two every week.

I don’t play WvW that much, so what I did is checked on late Thu (when some people lose interest) and Fri/Sat (when my server is guaranteed to hold a portion of the map).

I agree with the OP that Southsun feels underutilized. You cannot go there to complete your dailies (not enough foe types, low density/frequency of events, and no chained events). It’s suitable only as a farming location (especially for Ori Ore).

If you update one of your bags with any of the special types, the mini won’t be transferred via “deposit all.” (e.g. safe boxes, invisible bags, craftsman bags, etc.)

I agree it’s annoying to do this. But what I’d really like to see is an equipment slot in the [h]ero panel that allows you to place a mini. If checked, the mini would automatically spawn whenever you zone. (If unchecked, you’d have to manually display it.) In addition to addressing the two problems mentioned in the OP, it would also free an inventory slot.

Is dropping blueprints considered abuse?

in WvW

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

As described, this sounds like an exploit in a technical sense (it bypasses a game mechanic). We don’t know if ANet is bothered by the practice or not — we only know that they aren’t worried enough about it to make a statement, hotfix the issue, or take action against a lot of players.

Here are the facts as we know them:

  • Blueprints are soulbound/non-transferable
  • People have found a loophole that allows the blueprints to be transferred between accounts.
  • ANet has suspended people for using similar loopholes, when they have impacted the economy or given an unfair advantage to players, teams, or worlds.
  • A lot of people transfer blueprints so that key players in WvW can make use of them at the appropriate time.
  • ANet has not, to our knowledge, suspended anyone for transferring blueprints.

Instead of worrying about what ANet might do, I’d recommend that people offer suggestions about what they’d like to see changed for managing blueprints. As it stands now, I have half-dozen slots filled with BP, but I don’t WvW often enough to make use of them. I’d love to donate them to the cause. The only way to do that right now is working around the soulbinding — I’d prefer that ANet block the ability to do that or make it easier to transfer them.

I didn’t get anything substantial from RNG. I paid coin for stuffing/glue to try to make EL tonics — nothing. But I don’t care because the event is fantastic.

  • The NPCs having snowball fights in LA.
  • The presents that you unwrap and spawn a handful of really challenging foes.
  • The Jumping Puzzle (which I still can’t finish)
  • Making snowman
  • The choir challenge
  • The Toypaclypse
  • Fighting toy soliders, stuffed griffons, princes dolls (special skill: throws tantrum), etc.
  • ANet gave everyone a 15-slot bag and a new backpack skin. (Plus, as usual, a bunch of other skins.)
  • Everyone got to make two of any five of the available miniatures, without paying coin or gems. (Just had to complete the dungeon 5×.)

Oh, and the cash shop has a bunch of stuff, if you want to spend money.

I’m very happy with the event, even though I didn’t get any of the rare drops from BL chests, the forge, or other sources.

It’s not “hard” to choose “wait,” but why should people have to choose? Also, there’s no warning that if you choose to travel, you will respawn as defeated and incur a penalty. This doesn’t seem to be intended behavior.

The question isn’t whether this is a “significant” penalty — it’s whether there should be any penalty at all for traveling when prompted by the game. It doesn’t happen in PvE, it doesn’t happen when there is no queue (because you can’t travel while in combat) — it only happens after waiting for the queue.

I love the jumping puzzles for the special events, even though I have no hope of being able to finish them. I hope to see more of them and I hope that some day, I’ll be able to manage them. They are entirely optional: I can get the event uber-title without jumping and, if I really need help in PvE, there are plenty of mesmer jumpers around willing to portal me to anywhere I need to go.

in Suggestions

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Suggestion: Postpone the pop-up for switching maps during combat, so that people aren’t punished for moving.

Background: Recently, the game was updated to prevent people from avoiding being “finished” by defenders in WvW: if you change maps or logout, you will respawn in the new map as “defeated” and with broken armor.

Issue: Unfortunately, this also applies to two other situations:

  1. During combat with NPCs only.
  2. When the queue for another WvW map allows you to change maps, e.g. from a Borderland to Eternal Battlegrounds.

I don’t think we should be penalized for the second situation (and probably not for the first either). You shouldn’t have to choose between traveling (and being forced to repair your armor) or getting out of the current combat and risking having to queue again.

Suggestions to deter zerging in WvW

in Suggestions

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Zergs are not good for WvW. They trivialize the accomplishments of smaller sized groups and players in the zerg are left feeling their individual contributions to the zerg do not have a lot of weight to the success or failure of the zerg.

I disagree. Some people like to follow a group — it’s arguably safer and it can be fun to be involved in a big group event.

Some people prefer focusing on targeted objectives and there’s a strong role for them, too. Zergs do not “trivialize” squad accomplishments. On the contrary, they show just how important teamwork is over sheer numbers — I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a tiny coordinated group fend off groups of disorganized defenders or take important objectives.

WvW can be improved in many ways, but I don’t think zerging is a problem in itself, so I can’t support any of the suggestions.

MF not working.

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

Let’s be clear on what MF is not doing:

  • It doesn’t guarantee better loot on any particular kill — it merely increases the likelihood.
  • It doesn’t guarantee better loot for any particular run — if you sacrifice too much damage or durability, then you will contribute less to the fight and get less loot in general.

In other words, spending 30g on MF is an investment that will pay off only after spending dozens of hours farming. It’s generally not worth the effort for most people.

To claim that there is no improvement, one must first compare 1,000s of drops, not just those for one run.

One person compared a mere 300 drops with 100% MF and another 300 without any MF. See: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/10547v/i_am_back_with_more_magic_find_data/

The difference is significant: better loot w/MF, although not drastically better.

  • Without MF: 43 gear items of which 6 were green, none gold.
  • With MF: 35 gear, 13 green and 2 gold.
  • Without MF: 37 mats, 4 were T6
  • With MF: 42 mats, 7 were T6
  • Without MF: 1078 copper
  • With MF: 1740 copper

If that rate is close to correct and if you did the ~135 dailies every day since head start, your “expected” number of received kits is only 4.6. The chance of getting 0 is (1-3.6%)^135, or about 0.7%. So, it’s unlikely that anyone specific will get 0 BL kits, but out of every 100,000 people playing, we should “expect” about 700 of them to suffer this.

  • October: 2,000 reports/hour.
  • December: 20 reports/hour.

Even assuming players are only able to report the tip of the iceberg (10%) now, that would mean we should be reporting 200/hour… a drop from 2,000 to 200 is still extremely impressive.

Finally, there will always be bots in the game as long as the bot owners can make money off of illegal techniques, which primarily depends on gold selling.

Lifetime Survivor Achiement bug

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Illconceived Was Na.9781

Illconceived Was Na.9781

It turns out another developer now says it’s intended that rezoning/restarting the game reset survivor progress. The theory is that people would abuse it to avoid dying.

  • Jason King said — "It’s a bug that it resets when you log out/zone/etc. (^-^;)"
  • Jeffrey Vaughan said — “Did you change maps at any point? That will reset your progress. (So players can’t abuse it by switching to another map when they’re about to die.)” and later “Yes, one sitting. (Again, to keep players from trying to cheat by disconnecting right before death.)”

But this doesn’t change the advice:

  • You don’t have to avoid death since character creation, only since the last time you died.
  • It’s both faster & easier to obtain this on a higher level toon (L55+).
  • The safest way is to level via crafting (especially using a crafting booster).
  • The second fastest way is to pursue event chains, using a food and a potion/sharpening-stone + guild experience bonuses (there is a banner and a guild wide boon). It’s also easiest on Thursday night/Friday morning (when your WvW/Power-of-the-mists bonuses are strongest — that increases your opportunities for XP and increases your durability).
  • The second safest method is to level up via map exploration in cities and lowbie areas. (Again, you want to be higher level to do this.)

Jumping Puzzles should be marked on the map

Illconceived Was Na.9781

What’s wrong with marking the jumping puzzle on the map after the character finds it on the map? That’s how every other part of the map UI works now. For WPs and POIs, you don’t have to get that close. So what if for JPs, you had to reach the beginning? (Even now, this usually unlocks one of the location names in white on the map, too.)

I don’t see the benefit of forcing people to use non-game resources to find things in the game. Also, while it might be a bit of a surprise for you the first time you stumble across a JP or a little mini-story (plenty of which aren’t documented anywhere as far as I can tell), you’ll know the next time you’re in the area…and your alts won’t have any trouble finding them either.

Survivor in GW1 was originally an “iron man” achievement: you couldn’t ever die. Currently (and as of over a year ago), it works the same as in GW2: experience since last death (although you can rezone/logout/etc).

It’s still a significant accomplishment if you do it through foe deaths, albeit a lot easier than Iron Man.

BTW: it’s much easier to gain the title using L80 characters, because the XP gained per foe death is greater (one of the mechanics in the game that makes leveling from 70-80 take about the same time as leveling from 60-70). With an L55 character even, you can complete map exploration in an L50+ zone and get the title — maybe about 1-2 hrs for some people, longer for others. You can reduce that time by taking an L70 character into a higher level map.

Other good things to use: XP boosters, XP banners (from guild influence), and food (+10% xp/kill) and potions/stones (another +10%/kill). Those all speed up acquisition of this title.

Regarding how long it might take to fix this one: the last quote I saw suggested it isn’t a priority fix for them. Probably because the title is easily achieved even without the fix.

And I have to agree: the bigger problem is that there’s no clear explanation of the requirements, so a lot of people are confused by seeing the progress bar remain fixed. (I think there should be two bars: one for max and one for current.) Not being able to rezone/logout is annoying, but it’s easy enough to work around.

Lifetime Survivor Achiement bug

The achievement is working as designed with one exception: it stops progressing if you change maps or characters.

The title measures the most experience gained without dying, not since creation. You do not have to reach L30 without dying: you can go from L65 or even L80. Probably the easiest way is to have an L65+ character max one crafting discipline. The second fastest is a high-level toon in a dungeon. And third fastest is high-level toon during a series of dynamic events with lots of mobs.

After a death (or map change), you have to catch up your progress again. You can see how much XP gained by using the _ /deaths _ command. In order to update the achievement bar, you have to gain more XP without dying than you had earned prior to the last death. So using the OP’s example,

  1. Start a new toon, level up until gaining 8,400 and die (or fall or leave the map).
  2. Now, the toon gains 500 more xp.
    • The toon’s total xp is 8,900.
    • The toon’s progress towards survivor is 500 xp.
    • The achievement is not updated.
  3. Continue on for a bit until reaching 19,000 xp.
    • The characters total XP is 19,000 XP
    • The progress towards survivor is now 10,100 XP
    • The achievement track will show 10,100 XP.
  4. The character dies again and then gains another 5,000 XP
    • The total XP is 24,000 XP.
    • The progress is 5,000 XP
    • The achievement track shows 10,100, because you have not exceeded the prior total.

BOTs farming

To report Bots that move too quickly to tag, file a support ticket (link in the upper left toolbar for this site — use the “Ask a Question” option).

Include in the ticket:

  • Time & date observed.
  • Server/World
  • Zone + nearest landmark (POI or WP).
  • Your character name (to help them find out where you where).
  • Any other detail that can help them follow-up (profession, route, pattern, particular actions, …).

You’ll get an automatic note with some information that probably won’t interest you. Later, you might get a follow-up saying whether they found the bots or not.

However, they will follow-up: the support ticket will go to the same team that gets the /report from the in-game tool.

Thanks for taking the time to help rid the game of these guys.
