What is this business of “a top thief”? This is quite kitteny to come into a forum and post “a top thief” as if everyone knows anything about this shadow. The ones that advertise themselves get torn down the fastest.

I bet I could nail down this “top thief” >:) What say you good sir? A duel, or multiple?

if you don’t know ningyou you have never played guild wars 2 pvp

thanks for the comment.

I’ve played GW2 PvP, and I don’t know him.

Its prob cause u play Spvp but you dont play it competitive like in a team that only do that or on the leagues thatteams played to get into PAX and stuff like that, if you even watched the games from the top teams going for PAX you would know him and know that hes awesome

I’ve also played tPvP.

Congratz? even my little brother can play tpvp if he wishes.. now competitive level as i said you probably didnt or tried just a little. w/e if you never hear of him its only your loss =/ good luck out there

Well, first the assumption was that “everyone who PvPs has heard of this person,” and then when I said that wasn’t the case, it became “well, then you’ve never played anything besides sPvP.” And now that I’ve refuted that claim, it becomes “well, then you’ve never played tPvP competitively.” Next, will I have to say that I’m a dev for my opinion to be valid?

The argument being presented here is a fallacy. I shouldn’t have to have a certain PvP resume to objectively consider someone a “top” player.

The thing is if you dont play competitive or watch competitive (pro) teams playing how can you possible know or judge that a player is TOP or not

I never said that I don’t play competitively or watch teams that I consider to be skilled. You’ve made that assumption.

Where did I make such a claim? I provided the personal story as an example, to refute your claim that individual play was not part of ArenaNet’s “design”.

Speaking of logical fallacies, you seem familiar with one called a “red herring.”

You mean where someone brings up a completely irrelevant fact (personal story is solo) in order to mislead or detract from the actual issue (wvw/spvp/etc weren’t designed for solo play)?

Yes, you could say I’m in the midst of dealing with one now.

You made the general statement that solo play was not part of ArenaNet’s design. I provided an example that it was. That’s not an irrelevant fact. That’s a rebuttal.

WvW largely uses the PvE balance dynamic. Since we’ve established that individual balance is a necessity in PvE, this means that it should also be a necessity in WvW. Roaming is particularly a matter of 1vX balance; in a game where every class is supposed to be able to fill multiple roles, it implies imbalance if some classes can roam easily and/or effectively while others cannot.

Since sPvP is used as a forum for people to independently test builds and farm glory, there is an incredibly large 1vX dynamic. Although there are always exceptions, more organized team dynamics are generally relegated to tPvP, where such organization can earn greater rewards.

How is solo play not “intended by the game design”? If I recall correctly, there is an entire set of quests called the “personal story” that are intended to be played alone.

Are you somehow trying to imply that the Elementalist, or any class, is incapable at completing the Personal Story?

Or are you just trying to strawman one aspect of game play that was intended to be solo’d in an attempt to justify playing solo in another aspect of game play that wasn’t designed to be played solo?

Where did I make such a claim? I provided the personal story as an example, to refute your claim that individual play was not part of ArenaNet’s “design”.

1vX balance can mean a great deal to someone’s gameplay if they prefer soloing in PvE, roaming in WvW, or want to PvP in general. Of course individual play is an aspect of the game that was intended, and should be supported.

I think it’s arrogant to say that solo play “contributes nothing” just because you, personally, find it trivial.

I think it’s arrogant to expect the game to be balanced around a style of game play that obviously wasn’t intended by the game design. I mean I get some people like it and hooray for them but just because you decide to use a screwdriver like a hammer doesn’t mean the company who designed the screwdriver should change it to support that.

How is solo play not “intended by the game design”? If I recall correctly, there is an entire set of quests called the “personal story” that are intended to be played alone.

if you cower behind the zerg, and god forbid someone pulls you out of there….maybe.
Try to get out, roam, do 1vs1 and 1vs2 and you will instantly notice what’s missing.

What do 1vX contribute to the over all WvW effort? Nothing.

we are not here to establish what contribute does it gives, we are here to discuss if that scenario is balanced for Elementalist or not.
The answer is: no, is not balanced.

on a side note:
- stomping gives points to your server (using skills from the safety of a zerg doesn’t)
- only with direct confrontation (1vs1 and 1vs2) you can ascertain class balance: yelling “p0wn3d u n00b!!!” to unlucky folks that crossed your AoE while escaping from your zerg is not going to improve your individual skills and create a very misleading concept of “balance”.

If the scenario contributes nothing to the WvW effort then why would I waste my time on it? I don’t care if we’re balanced 1vX because 1vX contributes nothing to any element of game play. It’s something people do that was never intended by the game designers so why would you expect them to balance things around an aspect of game play that was never intended/supported? It’s just naive.

As for “cowering” behind the Zerg, it’s the Zerg that wins WvW. Elementalist is one of the best characters in these scenarios having great AOE support and great ranged AOE DPS/CC. Sure a Guardian can bring AOE Support, but lacks the ranged AOE DPS/CC. A Necro can bring the ranged AOE DPS/CC but lacks the AOE Support. We have it all in one tidy package.

  • you can’t kite the boss indefinitely. When the champ can’t go into melee once each minute, he loses the condition too and becomes free for all.

I like your idea, but I don’t agree with this particular restriction. Why shouldn’t people be allowed to kite? It’s a champion, which is intended to be fought by a larger group, so kiting seems like a logical way to kill it. Saying “no kiting” also forces anyone who fight at a distance—like, say, a Ranger—to run up to the champion once per minute, interrupting their rotation, and dodge a telegraphed move for an arbitrary reason. I think if they can kill it in <15 minutes, then anything’s fair.

I think this sytem might also cause problems when it comes to lvl 80 players claiming champions that are part of the “trains” in Queensdale and/or Frostgorge. I don’t particularly like those trains because I think they cause unnecessary community conflict, but I think that signets of capture could exacerbate that problem.

Otherwise, though, I do enjoy your idea, especially since soloing champions is challenging entertainment. I would say perhaps make the cooldown longer, or make it so that you can only do something like that 1-3 times a day.

Flame wall: Maybe just give it a secondary activated ability that causes damage and blow out on a critical hit or something. Or allow it to inflict torment? Cleanse conditions? Anything to make the skill more interesting or at the very least, make it a bad idea to run through the giant flaming wall lol.

Torment would be a nice addition. Flamewall definitely needs some kind of a boost, as many in this thread have stated. It would be nice if Fire Shield had a little more kick, too, like a +5% damage boost for the duration.

In my opinion, air is the least problematic attunement for focus, but I’d love to see Swirling Winds grant out-of-combat swiftness. I’ve never understood why the damage-focused offhand dagger has a mobility skill, but focus—which is supposed to be utility- and CC-focused—does not.

Best and Worst of GW2 Releases - Year 1

in Living World

I think the holiday events are among the best updates, because they provide a slew of entertainment that appeals to all different kind of players. Personally, The Mad King’s Clocktower was one of my favorite game events that I’ve ever done. I enjoyed the Wintersday jumping puzzle(s), too, but I wish the rewards had been better.

I think the worst is the Living Story. Besides feeling like I’m being spoon-fed content so I will be encouraged to play, it’s confusing. Even when I was heavily involved in the content, because I was excited about it—namely, the Prelude and the first chapter—I had no idea what was going on. It also annoys me that fantastic content, like the dungeon, is whisked away before I even get the chance to experience it. I’d rather not touch that content than be perpetually afraid that I’m going to miss out on something fun/important.

I can spam 8k+ hits on my thief. pretty easily.

i play a thief and I agree that stealth is poorly designed. it’s op’d to be able to remain stealthed the entire time while attacking. that’s while I don’t spec permastealth. it’s for easymode scrubs.

Off-hand Sword idea

Old topic, but since we’re all commenting…

Both of these skills would incredibly OP, you could use 5 > 4 > 5 until you had 25 stacks of might, switch to D/D, then burst them down with the old CnD > Mug > BS combo with 25 stacks of might.

I think that they sound cool as a concept, but in reality, they’re just far too powerful. I do however agree that we should get an off-hand Sword and I really do hope that it becomes a reality in the future.

Both of the suggested skills have a cost of 6 initiative, and the 4th skill can only give you a maximum of 3 initiative, so I’m not sure how successfully you could spam 5 -> 4 -> 5.

Pet should be an invulnerable/innocuous companion who neither deals nor takes damage.

Instead every pet offers various utilities existing on the class mechanic bar.

Boom. Ranger fixed.

That would be interesting and worthwhile, I think, but it would be a little odd to have a shark just maxing and relaxing beside you while a krait tries to stab your face in.

Also, this is a minor issue compared to everything else fundamentally wrong with the mechanic, but it bothers me to no end: why are the pets permanently juveniles? I’d like my polar bear to grow up and lose his stripes.

Is it Fun? How ArenaNet Measures Success

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Imagi.4561

At the moment, one of my biggest complaints with GW2 is rather odd, but: I think the combat system is too fast-paced. Often—and especially in groups—combat is not so much proactive as reactive self-preservation and button-mashing. Events with zergs are downright frenetic, like a rabbit on heroine. I don’t find that particularly fun.

The grind and gear treadmill I am disappointed about, but not surprised. The advertisements for GW2 always had a little bit of “too good to be true” flavor to them, so I tried to take everything that was said pre-release with a grain of salt. They also said that the effects dynamic events would be “permanent,” and that’s hardly the case.

I see what you’re saying, but in the rifle concept he’s talking about 3 distinctly different attacks, not one attack with a damage modifier based on the variable of distance. One is a short-range cone, one is a mid-range with the chance to ricochet, and one is a simple long-distance shot.

New chars can't get new hairstyles? Why?!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Imagi.4561

Imagi.4561

New hair styles in the gem store is a perfect example of what people wanted out of the gem store – stuff that is purely cosmetic and doesn’t matter.

However, the hair shouldn’t be a part of the kit. What makes it slightly worse is that when the kit was first introduced, although they were unsure how it’d actually work (because it wasn’t final), they said that new kits may be released in the future and only those kits will have the new styles. For example, imagine there being 2013, 2014, 2015 etc, style kits, and if you want these hairs, you’ll need the 2013 kit specifically. That would also mean that any old kits won’t get you the new styles and all old styles would be eventually lost.

What they should be selling is “series 1 hair styles” that unlocks the hair styles for you account and comes with a free hair style makeover kit. On the character creation screen, these hair styles would be selectable but locked until purchased to let people know they’re there. A month from now, no new player is going to know about these hairstyles.

“New hair styles in the gem store is a perfect example of what people wanted out of the gem store – stuff that is purely cosmetic and doesn’t matter.”

Some people maybe. Clearly not all people as you can see in this thread.

They just need to put a barber in the game and I pay for that barber and the hairstyles with an expansion.

I like that solution. I played LotRO for a time, and I really enjoyed the barber services. Especially since it was done with in-game currency.

I understand that the company has to make money in a game with no subscription fee, and I can understand them doing that through various clothing and weapon skins, unusual hair/eye colors, and possibly tattoos and piercings in the future. Logically speaking, these are all things that characters in GW2 would need to obtain through some kind of service, like a tattooist. But normal, natural hairstyles? Why wouldn’t these be available to a character from the beginning? Is there some kind of mystical force preventing an Asura from putting her hair in pigtails until someone else does it for her?

I understand I’m nitpicking at logic in a game where a sentient plant-being can breathe fire at a centaur, but to me it seems like a disconnect in the design principle.

Sniper rifles really don’t fit if you think about it. What kind of thief snipes? Very, very few I can think of in reality or in fiction. It runs against the spirit of the class which is infiltration, stealth and improvisation. The only theme it shares with a sniper is undetectability, but a lot of other completely unrelated GW2 things have that also going like the Snow Leopard elite.

How many traditional Rangers or casters can use a greatsword?

I think a Thief rifle would be interesting, but I don’t see the logic in having the autoattack chain being short-range -> mid-range -> long-range. The chain wouldn’t be able to hit anything farther away until the third skill, and the first two skills have to succeed to get there.

I do agree that Rangers should get first dibs on the rifle, though. If Thieves got one first, the rage would be incalculable (although amusing to read).

It isn’t a chain. It changes depending on the distance of the target.

I actually enjoy Trahearne’s voice acting. Although it’s deadpan, I think Matthew Brenher has a very interesting voice.

However, I agree with many other posters that his character feels like some fanfiction writer won a secret contest, and got their character incorporated into the game. There just isn’t enough information given about his personality for me to really like him.

For one thing, he doesn’t seem to have any emotions, ever—and I don’t just mean with vocal nuance. He didn't seem to have one kitten to give after Tybalt died, and essentially blew off his death with "Yep, sorry about that." Meanwhile, I was emotionally devastated, and I had evidently known Tybalt much more briefly than Trahearne had.

There’s a lot of personality facets that we get with more fun, likeable characters, but not Trahearne. What does he want in life (outside of his Wyld Hunt)? What excites him? What’s his sense of humor like? Does he have any regrets or prejudices (towards Asura perhaps, after what happened to Malomedies)? Has he ever done anything stupid? Does he have any funny Sylvari stories? What does he do with himself when he isn’t worrying about Risen and Zhaitan? Does he have any hobbies, like tap dancing or playing drunk checkers? Has he ever fallen in love?

TL;DR Trahearne is a flat character. People will like him more if he’s given an engaging personality, or at least an interesting history.

easy – i’ve played that spec. it was too easy. i am sorry that you don’t understand that permastealth is bad for the game and only for scrubs. I left it as soon as it was obvious how easy it is.

I’ve played BS too, but I’m rather skeptical that you have any realistic grasp of how it works on an encounter-by-encounter basis. When I played it, I actually found it much harder than S/D evasion, because it required much more exact timing and was less forgiving of mistakes. Based on your definition of it being a “scrub build,” I would argue that skilled BS players operate on a much higher skill ceiling than skilled S/D players.

You may not like stealth, but the entire Shadow Arts traitline is devoted to making it better, just as Acrobatics is devoted to evasion. It may be cheap at times, but it’s still a valid build.

I’m completely underwhelmed, all you posted was some fluff and meh balances. Cool, you’re going with the anti stealth route. Congrats on making S/D the only viable thief build in the years to come, ANet YOU SO SMART TEEHEE!

I think it’s even more silly you tied that mechanic to a ranger – who is almost impossible to backstab thanks to pet eating 90% of them because your targeting is absolutely atrocious. On top of their perma regen and protection I may as well just roll a ranger. Forgive me if rangers have been nerfed, last I played they were unkillable by a BS thief if they knew what they were doing. Hell they seem to have more evades than a thief.

I guess you’ll listen to thief QQ but ignore every other glaring issue with the game that players are crying about. I’m impressed, continue the amazing work.

If you can’t bs a ranger, you need to l2p. I find it easy on my thief. Rangers are pretty easy to kill in WvWvW. Seriously, L2p

Sanduskel, you proudly tout that you are an evasion-based S/D Thief, and that Thieves with stealth-based builds are “scrubs.” But Backstab is on the dagger mainhand. So how would you have any grasp on how easy it is to BS a Ranger?

My troll senses are tingling.

Sylvari to me look really cool as thieves, but their story doesn’t fit a thief at all.

I’ve heard that before, but Caithe is a Thief. I have a harder time accepting Norn as Thieves, since it doesn’t really seem to fit their lore or “racial personality.”

Thief Stealth = Worst Mistake In The Game

i play a thief and I agree that stealth is poorly designed. it’s op’d to be able to remain stealthed the entire time while attacking. that’s while I don’t spec permastealth. it’s for easymode scrubs.

You keep using that word but I don’t think it means what you think it means.
I forget who originally linked this a month or so ago, but I would say your constant attacking of other thieves is a projection of what you are onto someone else.

The Scrub:
http://www.sirlin.net/ptw-book/intermediates-guide.html

well if you have to rely on perma stealth, you wouldn’t recognize a true scrub.

I don’t particularly care for the stealth playstyle, but I don’t see how it is any more or less valid than evasion. It’s just a different way to play.

it’s much much easier to play that evasion. honest thieves admit as much. decent thieves consider it the scrub easymode spec.

Really? Honest and decent thieves admit as much? Both sets have their strengths and weaknesses. In fact it’s much harder to take down a boon bunker using D/P than S/D. You might actually see honest and decent thieves running around with both sets to make up for what the other is lacking. Everyone thinks that their class/build takes more skill to use. Warriors can wreck perma-stealth builds now by equipping berserker stance. BTW, I run around with S/D as my build because of the shortcomings of D/P. That would be the reason I linked the definition of scrub to you because you seem to think it’s just easy mode, but it’s pretty easily countered by skilled players. S/D is overall the stronger set, but keep telling yourself that you are better because you use evasion instead of stealth. Why don’t you try using both at the same time and see which one you end up relying on more.

it’s obviously easier. so many more thieves use the permastealth and that’s the spec that kitten es most players off. it’s very clear which is the scrub easy mode spec. why else would this spec be played by the majority of thieves?

It’s very frustrating that most thieves pick this scrub easymode spec, because it ruins the reputation of all people playing thieves. Many players hate me simply because I play a thief, but their rage stems from the exploitation of perma stealth in wvw.

Because no one ever complains about perma-evade boon stripping thieves right? They aren’t thinking about making changes to non-stealth thieves at all.

Nope. never heard a single complaint about that.

Really? Then, if no one complains about the boon-stripping capacity of S/D evade builds, why are they nerfing it?

Thief Race

The only races I can really give recommendations on are Human and Sylvari, since I’ve played through all their early storylines.

For Human:
Poor (although it’s a little cliche, it fits) -> Dead Sister go well together, and probably fit the class the best. If you don’t want Poor, then Commoner -> Unknown Parents also mesh well.

For Sylvari:
I liked the combination of the White Stag and “Where life goes,” although The Shield of the Moon and “Act with Wisdom” also work well.

The third component of each race—which god were you blessed by or what cycle were you born in, respectively—are really more about personal preference and you character’s specific personality.

I’ve done the Ash Legion storyline on a Ranger, and I really enjoyed it, but I agree with other posters that Charr Thieves aren’t my favorite.

I would prefer a Ranger more akin to it’s predecessor in GW1, where Beastmaster builds were a viable option…as were builds where you didn’t even have a pet.

I love pets. I also love seeing them survive encounters, and having the option to build my Ranger without a companion, if I so choose.

p.s cnd isn’t unreliable, lol

I’ve played a S/D build since betas. I’ve always loved the aesthetics, and I’ve always thought it was fun. I used to get mocked for using it, because after the changes to offhand dagger, it was borderline kittened. In that day and age, it was difficult to play. I was proud of myself for being competent with it.

In today’s meta, that isn’t the case anymore. S/D is popular because it’s much harder to counter than Backstab burst, and it’s lower risk.
