Wow. So much negativity. Thieves do well today and can fit multiple roles. Dec 10th isn’t the end of the world, lol.
Which part of this discussion, exactly, said or implied that Dec 10th is “the end of the world”? It was my understanding that this was a general discussion thread about thieves, and is only loosely related to the coming update.

Currently I’m working with D/F. Probably one of the most interesting/tricky weapon sets to play for an Elem.
Yes, yes it is. I think it’s great fun, though.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I look up at the stars at night and wonder, why are we here? What is our purpose?
In all seriousness, what is the role of Thieves? “Jack of all trades” belongs to the Engineer; “highest damage output” is far easier done by other classes, like LH Eles and Warriors; “group utility” is served by Eles, Mesmers, and spirit Rangers. It’s a fun class and I enjoy it, but I feel largely ineffective in group dynamics.
It would be disingenuous of me to say the class is completely useless, or to ever claim that I intend to delete my Thief. But I’m not really sure if our status in the current game reflects what the class was meant to be.
I think the Thief has been failing to meet expectations since it’s institution in the game. It’s certainly failed many of mine.

I’m sure there have been threads about this before, but hopefully the experienced Thief players will humor me (I am but a nooblet, and know little of the ways of theorycrafting):
Where exactly is the payoff line in balancing power with precision/crit damage? I see several comments here that say or imply that an extremely high crit chance isn’t especially valuable, but I have no idea where the benefits start to decrease. Is there a specific point of “exponential decay” in the value of crit chance? Does that vary between weaponsets?
tl;dr: I use S/D and I don’t know how to math. Teach me, senseis.

Don’t let this thread die, its living story that needs to die if it continue being temporary contents only.
2 weeks of temporary content, play it or miss it forever is not a good idea.
It seems arenanet is trying to be different for the sake of being different.
Living story should be permanent so that even if u miss 2 months of content, you can take ur time to clear it and catch up with the rest of the players.
Taking that into consideration, make the living story non-zergy so that 2 months later when not much ppl is doing it,it can still be completed by small groups.No. No thank you. Not for me.
Living World is awesome. The world happens with or without you. That’s what it means to play in a Living World. You might miss some stuff sometimes. Big deal. There’s new stuff coming out all the time.
I like the temporary content.
I like that Living Story is not permanent.
I like what ANet is doing I hope they continue to develop the game just as they have been.
I don’t mind temp content, but I missed out on some LS content and now, even though I’m participating, I feel like I don’t really know what’s going on. I don’t know any of these NPCs that evidently know me—Rox, Braham, Marjory, and Kasmeer—and I don’t understand the references that are being made to previous LS content.
It’s all well and good that I’ve missed some chapters and the content therein, but I should be able to find out in-game what exactly it was that I missed and how it affected the story as a whole.

It seems like they must be race-restricted, but why? They’re pretty essential figures in the lore of the game, and given that you can find Caithe, Trahearne, and Dagonet, I don’t see the sense in restricting them to only one race.
And why would there an NPC that gives you hints where you can find them, if they can’t be found at all?

As Shanna said, I believe this face is in-game in a slightly different version. I think what you’re looking for is the fourth option in the top row of this image, but the fourth face in the second row isn’t terribly far off, either.

So, on my Human, I decided that I wanted to go find and chat up the various Sylvari Firstborn in the world. Dagonet, Trahearne, and Caithe are easy to find, and I figured finding the others in the Grove—Aife, Niamh, Kahedins, and Malomedies—wouldn’t be much harder. There’s even an NPC that gives you hints as to the locations of most of them, not to mention the fact that they all have their own houses within the gardens of their respective cycles.
But I guess we’re all playing hide-n-seek and nobody told me, because I can’t find them anywhere. Even searching in the home instance turned up nothing.
Has anyone been able to find these NPCs on their Human? If you have, and you could tell me where to find them, that would be swell. I’m starting to get dizzy from running in circles.

I’d like to see more options for bows, since there were 5 different types in the original Guild Wars.
Hornbow, in particular, could be used for burst DPS/single-target spiking.

If I understood you right, you’ve tried to upgrade the gloves with the same rune 3 times?
The gloves already have the Mad King rune on them. Runes don’t stack on the same piece of armor. The benefits it lists are the potential benefits from having the runeset on multiple pieces of your armor. To get all the benefits, you need to have a Mad King rune on your helmet, shoulders, chestpiece, gloves, pants, and boots.
This is the wiki page for runes, which provides more information on what runes are and how they work.

Thief was my first main, and it’s still a class I enjoy. Like the Ele, it’s a lot of fun, although sometimes the rewards don’t compensate for the risk.
I’ve heard others say that they really enjoy Mesmer and Engineer, although I don’t have enough experience with either class to say much on them.

All those humans running around in Tier 3 Cultural Armor probably spent real world money to buy 27 or so gems, and then traded those gems for 119 gold in order to buy the human tier 3 cultural armor.
I’d actually be interested to know how many people do that. I didn’t, and my assumption was that most people just farm the gold for it.
Now 500+ dollars (or the equivalent in time invested in farming materials) on the other hand is quite significant. Which is probably why you don’t see as many people with Legendary Weapons running around.
Legendary weapons also take a ridiculous amount of time and materials to make.

Human Females have the single best looking Tier 3 Cultural Armor for Elementalists in my humble opinion.
Human T3 seems to look fantastic in general, but it’s very commonplace.
Well, yeah, I suppose it would be common place. For that matter any and all Tier 3 Armor should be considered roughly common place. Seeing as how the entire set of Tier 3 Armor costs roughly 26.18 US Dollars. (assuming the rate of exchange that I found via a google search is correct…)
I think the price is US dollars isn’t really a significant factor compared to how nice the skins look and how many people play Humans—especially since the T3 is insanely expensive compared to the crafted skins on the TP—but that could just be my perception.

I’d like to see Thieves and Eles get a larger health pool, because I think that their current one does not correctly compensate for their shortcomings. Eles no longer have the damage or mobility to be competitive, and Thieves mitigate damage by avoiding it, which is being made more and more difficult for them to do.
I also think the gap between the lowest health pool and the others is unnecessarily and illogically wide.
However, I have very little experience with Guardian, so I have no idea how a change like that would affect them.

Their dialogue speaks in a familiar amnner to my character who does know them, Rox has some lines about hallucinating rytlock and Braham has a few about hallucinating his mother, rather than either of them introducing themselves.
That’s actually my point; I get that exact same familiar dialogue from them, and I have no idea who they are, outside of information I’ve gotten secondhand through map chat or read on the wiki.

If I were you I would look at the recent proposal for Dec 10th patch notes, and read some of the comments (perhaps ctrl + f to find comments related to Thieves). Evolution has played it’s part in Tyria. The weak have been weeded out and those who could not handle the style of play have left; only the strong remain.
It should be a point of pride for those elementalists who still practice their magicks in these harsh times filled with deathly condition spamming necromancers and rampaging warriors while also being regularly smitten by the unseen gods above (ANet).
It should be known that those elementalists who still delve into the arcane and go toe to toe with the other classes have to play on a whole other plane just to match levels with them.
This being so, let it be so that being an elementalist makes you better than everyone else.If you are a proud elementalist, put this in your signature.
#ELEtismPS: I have set up the E L Etism[ELE] guild and I plan to use it for productive elementalist business in the near future. Whisper “Gasmic” for a guild invite. (More info on this to come in a later thread.)

O bby. I like the way you Ele.
On a serious note, I’m glad this is taking off. It not only makes me feel like a trendsetter, but I’m glad to see people taking pride in playing Ele. It’s an enjoyable class.
I’ll probably ask for an [ELE] invitation later tonight when I get home from work, because I’d like to learn how to play the class to the best of my ability. Right now my strategy is essentially “mash buttons and hope for the best” mixed with a little “ohgodohgodohgodohgodCANTRIP”.

After having some time to process all this information and responses it seems that anet is trying to dumb down the thief. Nerfing skills that are activated and putting power into passive stuff. Destroying sword/X. Nerfing general evasion/stealth tactics. Buffing completely useless traits to justify it. Completely limiting build diversity into only 1 viable build now for tpvp and in wvw. D/P will be the only usable weaponset, even after infusion nerf because d/d offers no defensive capabilities at all and doesn’t have any DPS advantage over D/P.
I feel like arenanet is trying to fix something that isn’t broken and in the process they are going to break the thief on dec 10.
I’m not sure why they feel the need to dumb it down—as you said, it’s like trying to fix something that isn’t broken. It already has a pretty low skill floor, and I feel like some of these changes are reducing the ability of experienced players to earn rewards with build synchronicity and risk-taking.
Perhaps it’s just me, but that’s the general impression that I’m getting.

If you were at the top of the tower to begin with when you entered the instance, you shouldn’t have to run L3 again. You can just walk down to the chest.

I’m assuming you’re referring to if this stealth attack crits with the Hidden Killer trait? It’s an interesting bonus with that trait that I didn’t think about before, but not everyone uses Hidden Killer. Executioner is better for pretty much every build I make/run.

I agree that the consequence of weakness on Backstab-based builds can suck, but I think it’s fair. It’s a gamble that any player takes when they base their burst around 1 or 2 skills.
If weakness is a persistent issue, you could try changing out one of your utilities for SoA.

I use a D/F cantrip build, and I think cantrips are the better option. They’re fun to use, and even with my terrible reaction times I can survive encounters and contribute to a group.
I only have two complaints when it comes to cantrips: the 20% recharge reduction is pretty much mandatory; and compared to Armor of Earth, Lightning Flash, and Cleansing Fire, Mist Form seems lackluster—although it’s cooldown is normally a whopping 75s. The only time I’ve ever found occasion to use in PvE is running around in the Toxic tower, wherein there’s a lot of aoe, projectiles, and tight spaces.

They used to be a little better—you could sometimes combo the 2 and 3 skills together to reset a mob and then revive yourself—but they changed the AI a while back so that it takes NPCs longer to reset. This made the stealth nigh on useless, and as far as I know it still hasn’t been addressed.

Druidic.3146 (Lady Steamhawke is his ranger’s name) has been running a Power Longbow Greatsword build lately, got him fairly high in the PvP leader-boards.
The build looks to be even better after the Dec 10th patch, so maybe it is a potential option after the patch.

No, I don’t know for sure—I assumed it was once per day since they encourage you to do that instance multiple times, and the drops are exceedingly rare from what I’ve seen.

Now that you understand how difficult the content is inside the tower, build around it. Forsake your usual utilities for things that will help you survive—evades, distractions, CC, teleports, and/or invulnerabilities. Also consider changing one of your weapons to something more survivable; many weaponsets have built-in evades.

I’ve trained through the levels and fought through them at various points during the day, and I can say with certainty that running is far easier and less tedious than fighting through all the mobs.
There were several occasions where I would get holed up with a group somewhere in the maze, and we’d be trying to fight our way out for several solid minutes because there were just so many mobs. Especially in those events you have to do to clear the way out of a level—which spawn more enemies—like freeing people from the spider sacs.
The only time zerging through it is stressful is when you would take a wrong turn or get otherwise separated, in which case you were on your own to try and make it through the train of mobs.
