They are not in charge of the Trading Post. The economy purely depends from the players, having in mind that it’s players selling to other players and there’s no base price.

That’s not entirely true, the prices are a question of supply and demand, and ANet alone controls, or let’s better say limits, the supply.

Did you see how many people did the Lost Shores event once we knew that spending 2 hours in the event chain for 4-5 exotics was the reward? People wanted to do that event. Right now there is no motivation to do anything except sit in LA and stare at the screen.

Most people didn’t know that (I didn’t, was this mentioned somewhere before?), they just wanted to participate in an epic event. If you cannot motivate yourself to do anything else than grind, that’s entirely not the game’s fault.

just another stupid term in skinwars2. Nothing more and everything less.

Reading through the list of your comments, you didn’t even play for at least three weeks but never get tired of trolling around in the forums and telling everybody how much you hate the game in almost every aspect. If you don’t like it at all, move on maybe? There’s plenty of other things to do. I consider this behaviour kind of an annoyance.

I don’t see why they don’t just take the end event chest “code” – move it to Lion’s Den and give everyone who is on their selected list of DC’d people and provide them one weekend to click on the dang chest and be done with it. This way we get what we get…

If the game code doesn’t allow for such a mechanic, that’s not a trivial thing to do. And I don’t want to witness the outrage if something goes wrong here.

"Progression" in MMOs

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Iruwen.3164

@Iruwen.3164

“Every other MMO out there has vertical progression […]”

That’s not the argument, though. The argument is that we accept that a game has to have some VP in order to keep people like you happy, people who need the placebo effect (and I do feel sorry for you because of that, that you’ll never be good at anything because you rely on stats).

The argument is that there are good games out there which have a power plateau, like GW2 originally promised to have. Except GW2’s power plateau has now been cast aside. To ArenaNet it doesn’t exist any more. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t games out there which did embrace it.

MMORPGs that do:

- Champions Online
- Star Trek Online
- Guild Wars 1
- Dungeons & Dragons: Online
- Marvel Heroes (out soon)
- Neverwinter (out soon)

Champions Online is one of my favourites. It never promised a power plateau, but it’s been true to that element of game design. And to be honest, the Nemesis Confrontation content at level 40 is far, far more interesting than anything GW2 has to offer. And that’s because it’s content designed around player builds and skill, rather than the “I have no skill!” placebo of vertical progression.

I guess for those who have no skill and want to stagnate forever, never having any skill, the placebo effect of vertical progression is fine. But I like having skill, blast it all! And I like getting better at things. And the only way that can happen is if a game challenges my skill, rather than opting for the placebo effect of vertical progression. This is why the best games out there, hands down, don’t use vertical progression.

There’s a reason that Grand Theft IV, for example, doesn’t do vertical progression.

(Edit)

Let me explain this to you. The reason vertical progression is a bit of a cancer is because of the placebo effect which removes skill. Okay, take Super Mario Bros. What if you had stats which increased the length of the invulnerability star, that allowed you to take more hits before shrinking, and allowed you to double jump up to 8 times.

Now, imagine how easy Super Mario Bros would then be, since you’d often be invincible, you’d take a lot of hits, and you could double jump to save yourself from pits and dangers. Sure, you’d feel awesome, but it’s a hollow thing. It’s just mitigating the fact that you’re horrible at the game. So it’s replacing your need for skill with stats.

That’s the “placebo effect” of vertical progression. I’m not a fan.

That’s a nice long post, I’m just not sure why you’re addressing this to me, I’m arguing against vertical progression all the time? Did you actually read the rest of my post or just “Every other MMO out there has vertical progression”? I was clearly saying that GW2 is the wrong game for people that want this game mechanic and that it’s in almost every other MMO, so leave GW2 to the people that don’t want it.

What is sad is that a majority of players already completed most of the abusing and was done with it. We, the rest, just found out and now it’s gone. As the OP said clearly, nerf some more. This is my first real disappointment with this game. The fact that many people already took advantage of it and you were left behind is the sad part.

What makes me sad is posts full of pure envy like this. People shouldn’t have been able to take that advantage in the first place, good that it was fixed.

Just because you don’t like the look of the legendary that would be interesting for your spec. Then get another one, just for the look. And if you’ve really done all you can do in the game except grinding a legendary, it’s probably time to accept that a game has an end if you’re not playing just for fun (like with almost every shooter – you shoot people, that’s it, nobody complains, only with MMOs).

I miss character progression in GW2 and since character progression is thing driving me to log in and play the game, I have no will to log in.

So you have your acended and lagandary gear than?

Please enlighten me. What actually makes legendary legendary? The staff looks ugly and reminds me of pony rainbow stuff. Why on earth would I want my character to have that?
Plus I already have exotic staff that has the same stats (actually much better, since legendaries stats are totally useless for majority of players) as the legendary so getting it wouldnt progress my character anywhere.

Wrong game for you then. You wouldn’t start playing CoD if I don’t like shooters too. Every other MMO out there has vertical progression, you shouldn’t have chosen the only one that doesn’t as it was advertised as such.

Funny how people instantly accept such claims without hesitation, even if this was true, it’s pure coincidence. And everybody had the same chance.

That chance should never have existed though.

Legendary, why is it legendary ?

Iruwen.3164

Ill just say once again “take a lot of time” is incorrect factor completely. Its fact that many ppl spent cc 20-30$ to get 200-400g and obtain 90% of requirements. Others used bots/hack tools to do the same.
Im not saying there are no ppl who play fair, what im saying there is nothing that “take a lot of time”.
To be perfectly honest, long term goals should be achievements , tittles. To common player, finishing full map is taking long time, if he is trying to enjoy it.
Legendary is already taking far more time to obtain , w/o need for insane amount of gold, so that distinguish it from, exotics.
What was the problem to implement “mentoring” new players, or “craft” starter gear, or hell, achievement on revive ?
Would it not be far more RPG if you would have to “save/rebuild the overrun village” in some zone ? If you think about it, this would srsly help almost dead , and constantly contested (example) zones to get some life , and would not be so , easy to obtain since ppl would do it ?
All i say, grind xxx mats , is not , legendary.

PS.
Doing ANYTHING in GW2 takes far more time then buying gold from bots/gems. Thats a fact.

- as Mirta already said, it’ll still take a lot of time for the other requirements, and also if you change the requirements, and as I said, time is the only factor you can really use because it is a metric the game can measure
- not that it’s important, but from what I see 100g cost about $30 and you cannot measure this from from a gold buyer’s pov since they’re just cheaters and likely to be banned; if you change the requirements, people will just use a different cheat, although I doubt that most legendary owners risk that at all considering how much time and gold they have to spend, so that argument is rather arbitrary
- if you spend money on gems and then gems on legit gold, no matter how much you spend, you still have to do the rest of the requirements, also that investment should be honored and since legendaries don’t have better stats, it doesn’t do any harm – spending money for a good thing (keeping GW2 alive) can also be considered heroic :p
- your proposals, like crafting gear or reviving lots of people, are just other forms of grind; GW2 is still just a game and everything is judged by hard numbers, I don’t consider reviving people just to get a legendary heroic at all, it’s completely egocentric
- how would you want to to do that overrun village thing, it would probably be just another combination of grind (killing mobs) and a lot of time needed and it would become either very easy because many people would do it, basically a giant farm spot, or undoable because nobody who doesn’t want a legendary would go there

I will never own a legendary, but the current system is fine imo. They just have to make getting the precursor less depending on luck/gold, which they’ll do.

If more of their focus is on new content instead of restoring hacked accounts or fixing bugs that affect a very small subset of the player base, I see nothing wrong with that.

Doh, isn’t that what they are doing? Focusing on new content and fluff items instead of fixing bugs/classbalance/whatever… sigh.
Bugs first, then content. But I digress, back on topic – sorry.

Those are completely different areas of the game and there are different developers or teams working on different issues, so no they don’t do one thing and don’t care about everything else, they’re working on several aspects of the game at once like every other software developer. They have probably been working on the new content and one time events long before most of the bugs we currently experience even existed, content designers are not necessarily programmers. The fact that some bugs have not been fixed since release may be a hint that they didn’t design the engine properly from scratch so those bugs are now hard to fix, the same is true for reoccuring problems (loading screen) or fixes on one end breaking things on the other (skill changes), but not that they’re disregarding fixes.

Getting a legendary is supposed to take a lot of time, otherwise everbody would have one soon. There are not many diversified things that you can do in a game and say “yeah, he invested time without grinding and he’s social, truly deserves a legendary”. Map completion is one of those things, what should be the others? The clock tower JP was kind of hard, but was it legendary hard? Was its completion balanced for every class and race? ANet cannot add tons of content that is just doable for a few players just to get a legendary, that would be highly uneconomical. And how should the game know what good things you did to other players that can not be farmed, like revives? They had to solve it somehow. I doubt they’ll change the required mats, just reduce the luck required to get a precursor.

Mass invis can hit more than 5 targets (the most i’ve seen at once is 9), and curtain is almost unlimited (same with veil). Anyone who thinks it’s not useful hasn’t put much effort into trying it out.

That’s strange – MassInvis in my experience even get’s less than 5 because it also uses phantasms, pets, etc.

True about curtain – my bad – I play the game in German and got at least one stack of confusion on me – I meant veil, the second invisibility slot-option not the focus 4 skill.

I’ve stealthed my guild smallman on many occasions with it, but there’s no special trick I’m doing. The only reason I can think of that it goes over the 5 person cap is that the spell is a wave (the tiny line you see shoot out around you when you cast it) and that it functions like a line field effect like curtain and veil rather than a field like time warp, null field, and chaos storm. I tend to stick with mass invis just because I’m a bit on the selfish side and the cd is far shorter than TW… making it more useful in a situation I want to rez or stop a stomp.

It’s simply bugged then. What annoys me is that people complain about the mesmer but don’t actually know how the skills work, or are supposed to work, that they mix up utility skills with elite skills, which are supposed to be strong due to their long cooldown or they wouldn’t be called “elite”, and that all the negative bugs are never mentioned, just the positive ones, although the negative ones affect a lot more of our traits and skills. Imo they should instantly nerf the portal so it can teleport only five people, but fix its duration then and undo that stupid cooldown change that didn’t actually change anything. Change the moa skill? Fine, but then also fix its duration which is now often between 3 and 6 seconds, at least in PvE. And so on.

I think Anet is missing a huge economic opportunity here. They should sell sponsorships to the legendary weapons. Who wouldn’t want the ‘Legendary Geico Insurance Greatsword’ or the ‘Legendary Pepsi Focus of Fizzle’? Wouldn’t it be great if we could send soup labels to Anet and get a "Legendary Progresso Traditional Soup Ladle of Karka Bashing’?

(don’t miss the sarcasm, please)

More seriously, if a weapon is the pinnacle of the game, and people are making this big a fuss about how hard it is to craft or how expensive it is to buy, after the game has existed less than six months, get a grip. The game is supposed to last years, not weeks.

Hey, I want to see the next season of Game of Thrones, and read the next book in the series, but I just have to be patient. I also am not playing GW2 to ‘finish’ it so i can move on to the next game that pops out. I want it to last.

I don’t expect to log on every night and have something spectacular drop into my inventory because I deserve it.

I can fully understand the frustration with dropping hundreds of weapons into the Mystic Toilet and never getting back what you need – that is a suck mechanism that degrades the game. I fully expect Anet to fix or supplement this in time., because that is what they did with GW1, over time. Meanwhile, I just don’t go there.

But other than that, I think people are wasting too much energy churning about this, and ascended, and FOTM, and not enough energy enjoying what’s good in the game.

I totally agree on this. Some people, see above, have already played ~900 hours. Some probably even a lot more. Three months after release, that equals 300 hours per month, 10 hours per day. Every day. Apart from the fact that this isn’t sane at all (no offense implied, it’s a fact), do they really expect that there will ever be an MMO that can entertain you for such a long time without inctroducing a simple grind mechanism? It’s simply impossible for ANet to design enough fun content for this kind of addict, but unfortunately, it seems that an increasing number of people invests that much time in a game, so it’s still an important part of the playerbase for them that has to be satisfied. “Normal” people would only reach such a playtime over the course of several years, if they didn’t stop playing long before.

Of course they wouldnt announce such mishap, because it’ll hurt their sales. And that blog post about account security is like litany of common sense, which they fail to follow themselves.

Not telling your customers about such a breach hurts your sales much more (keyword Streisand effect) and is probably also illegal in some countries. As I said above, they should work on better ways to restore a hacked account. Sending mails to the old address is disadvantageous in cases where you cannot access your old mailbox any more. The user could have avoided the hassle by using two-factor authentication, which doesn’t require a smartphone as me and others have already pointed out several times, although I agree that a normal user is probably unable to cope with that option, so I think ANet would be better off officially telling people that they can use any TOTP device (e.g. Vasco DIGIPASS GO 6).

Things are not always as easy as they appear. I manage a database application. The server is backed up several times a day as it is critical information. If a record is deleted, I cannot restore it without restoreing the entire database. That would mean doing a “rollback” on our entire application. It’s very easy to imagine that the GW2 database could be very similier as this is actually VERY common.

Character information cannot actually be a lot of data, they can simply take a timestamped snapshot of the items currently on char as soon as the player is logging out, since that’s probably all that’s needed for a satisfying restore, and keep them until a max timespan and/or number is reached.

I didn’t experience a single bug while leveling to 60 tbh, it was a lot of fun to explore the world and it actually didn’t even feel grindy, except for the usual “gather a quadrillion wolf teeth and bring them to me” quests (which already was more grind than I’d ever accept now). I never really felt the urge to grind until they added Blackwing Lair with patch 1.6, from this time on the game really caused a downward spiral.

Colin Johanson: We just don’t want players to grind in Guild Wars 2.

It’s actually not constructive to quote this out of context. What was meant is that you don’t have to grind to achieve everything in GW2. Legendaries are one exception. It’s currently also true for some other things, like Infusions, but they already said during the AMA that the high ecto requirement is not exactly what they intended and that this will be reworked.

I don’t see an alarming amount here. People specifically come to the forums to complain, so the number of incidents here isn’t representative for the majority of players (the number of people active here is actually way higher according to ANet iirc). On the other hand, if you cannot login, you probably cannot login to the forums too, so that argument works in both directions. But what’s representative is the amount of support tickets ANet receives, and the support account is a separate account, so they can judge by those numbers pretty well. That being said, I tend to believe it when they say that there has been no unusal increase in hacks recently. I doubt they’d straight out lie to everybody, especially since they also have a big marketshare in Germany and the laws here are pretty clear about their responsibilities concerning customer information when it comes to data theft. After having read their blog post about account security, I doubt they’re the “bad guys” (like Sony for example, that was a mess of lying and incompetence).

karma, skillpoints, map 100% isn’t problem at all.
it’s hard to say how much gold is needed but it’s a lot. 1 lodestone is around 1,5 gold, powerfull blood around 25 silver . And because you can buy gems and convert it to gold, for now legendary in 95% can be bough buy cash (because can be bough by gold).

Have you tried to farm half a mil in karma? Do you have 100% map completion? Those things take time. Buying gems and converting them to gold to buy a legendary would take hundreds of dollars I saw a report of one person spending over a thousand dollars worth of gems on their legendary.
The point everyone is trying to make that you don’t seem to get is that you do not HAVE to buy gems to get the legendary I know a few people who have them without spending a dime on gems but they put a lot of work into the game.

By the time you reach 100% map completion alone you’ll have at least 250k karma if you didn’t manage to leave out almost every event. But this actually takes time, yes, and if somebody is willing to pay for gems to achieve most of the other stuff (and he’s gonna pay a lot I guess, could somebody do the math please?) that’s fine for me. Paying on the TP isn’t better or worse than grinding for countless hours. If we were talking about skill vs gems, ok – but since most of it is just grind, I don’t care if somebody wants to spend money on it.

IMO legendary on player should mean that this guy/girl spend a lot of time in game, are good players in most aspects, they did some hardcore things. Reward for effort and skill.
For now it isn’t. It can be bough with money in 95%. And those 5% aren’t connected with effort and skill at all.

It’s luck to get the precursor (or grind for gold) and more grind for the rest. Not really much skill involved. Even a half-brained monkey could achieve a legendary, actually.

Someday when ANet raises the level cap, will all the L80 Legendary become obsolete?

They won’t… problem solved
There is no reason for them to do so.. they will introduce new skills and probably revamp the traits or add other types of character progression in a similar manner but there is no reason to raise the level cap.

It’s already more or less official that the level cap will be raised with an extension.

That’s why I never check that option. I think it shouldn’t even be there, as it just sacrifices security for lazyness. It doesn’t work for me anyway, as our IP addresses are not only different, but also come from totally different class b networks.

People have been hacked who are using mobile authentication. If someone finds out their key, which only Arenanet and their phone have a copy of, it wouldn’t necessarily stop you logging in now, would it.

This shouldn’t ever happen, and I’m not quite sure how this could happen at all. The master key is shown exactly once and you don’t enter it with the keyboard, also the traffic is enrypted. To change the key, you need another TOTP. If a PC is so badly infected that somebody can actually get hold of it, that’s probably bad luck – there’s always an element of risk remaining.

If you have spyware on your PC, it’s probably gonna log the game authentication too. If the forum is using the same authentication backend, which it probably does, this is purely a frontend problem which can be solved for the most part by using TOTP two-factor authentication, which definitely everybody should do. It seems reliable considering it has been available for a longer time now and I haven’t heard of any fundamental issues with it so far.
The two things ANet should work on are account restoration (in the works) and maybe ways to quickly recover a hacked account, if somebody grabs the TOTP key you cannot login at all and should instantly notice that something’s wrong.

I didn’t mean to insult anybody, I’m sure most people are just dedicated hardcore players. But as I said here it doesn’t even have to be a case of cheating, might be anything. I still doubt there has been a breach at ANet though. We’d have way more reported cases of hacks then.

Funny how a bugged trait, Deceptive Evasion, is still our favorite one. That trait has brought me more trouble than aid lately, and seems to be focused on bringing as many critters into the fight as possible.

Yeah, that’s really fun. Already having a hard time? OK I’M GONNA AGGRO THAT YELLOW MOB TOO! Mesmers are awkwardesome.

How does it make sense that heavy armor looks like light armor or vice versa? Also, that would make it impossible to narrow down an enemies profession before a fight starts.

Since this seems to primarily affect power players, maybe they’re using some kind of third party software which contains a trojan… nobody would admit that of course.

Eh no? That wouldn’t make any sense at all.

Will infusion slots kill runes/sigils/gems?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Iruwen.3164

Wait until there’s a complete ascended set with exotic infusions. The stat difference won’t stay that marginal.

There’s a difference between ‘being able to take down’ and ‘having an edge’. Having ascended gear gives you the edge. Doesn’t make you impossible to be taken down.

And that leaves a bad taste after a fight. Was he actually better or did he just have better gear? I can only hope ascended gear will be reasonably easy to get when it’s fully deployed.

First I thought this would just another one of those “I don’t like all that whining about ascended gear, I like to grind” threads, fortunately I read it anyway and was proven wrong. I’ve always done as you propose, and it almost always paid out. There’s a minority of players that are just too immature, but those can still be reported and/or ignored. You have to deal with idiocy in real life too. Our guild is accepting people of all ages because we don’t like the “18+ only” policy of many guilds, I’ve met as many people in my age (30+) that are just plain stupid as those that have yet to grow pubic hair but are very pleasant to communicate with nevertheless. To be honest, I probably learned a lot more from those who still have the time to actually play the game a lot than I could teach them with my limited playtime.

I had hoped that GW2 would actually focus on the RPG part of MMORPG, this worked out only partially and was further diminished by the introduction of the FotM and agony gear checks. With ANet investing effort in balancing PvP and breaking PvE on the other hand instead of completely separating the two game modes, the game is becoming more and more a typical substitute of its genre, attracting a playerbase that couldn’t be less interested in actually playing an RPG.

Facing the mesmer is not simply a mindgame. Players who are experts at picking out the real mesmer still don’t have a really good chance when bugged phantasms are stacking 20+ confusion on a build that hardly shatters. Signet of Ilusions probably has the strongest passive of all signets in the game because illusions gain pretty much all of your stats except vitality, making them unrealistic targets, especially when you are facing a phantasm mesmer. Nevermind the fact that a mesmer stacking toughness/healing/precision condition damage can stack almost constant regeneration/protection through nothing but passive effects gained through traits via illusions that are not realistic targets during a fight if he has specced the right way.

High crit chance+toughness mesmers have such a ridiculous advantage over most professions that it’s really laughable, especially since illusions do not have a chance to bleed on crit when you invest in Dueling; they automatically bleed. There’s so much that mesmers have become accustomed to that any nerfs will send them into ragefits for weeks at a time.

There’s more to the mesmer that’s broken than this, but I figured you might want an example.

You “forgot” to mention all the bugs that are actually a handicap for mesmers, if those are fixed, we can talk about balancing.

Mesmer in PvE?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Iruwen.3164

Iruwen.3164

Yeah, it’s not actually hard to PvE as we have a very good survivability. It’s just not as easy and quick as with other classes. The only thing that’s really broken is the efficiency while farming dynamic events, but that’s something that’ll probably be solved by the upcoming changes to how dynamic events scale anyway.

Probably not, because direct damage doesn’t necessarily mean melee – my greatsword mesmer has a range of 1200 units.

There’s an audience of 2.2 million gamers on /r/gaming, and 79,000 on /r/GuildWars2. The average viewership to either of these places far exceeds that of the official forums.

/r/gaming doesn’t tell us anything about GW2, and ANet said there are more players active in the official forums than they expected, far more than 10% of the playerbase iirc, even 10% would probably already be 200000 judging by the sales numbers.

Counter-Strike up to Source is one of the most popular games of all times, and it doesn’t have any of the modern progression systems that other games have (Global Offensive recently added that). Did we have less fun it? Probably not.
GW2 is even meant to be an MMORPG as far as I know, so it would be better off sticking to the chatroom concept than vertical gear progression, because that naturally attracts players that don’t actually want to RP.
