We’re proud to announce the very first Guild Wars 2 Invitational Tournament on August 31, 2013 at PAX Prime! We’re teaming up with our partner MMORPG.com to host an exciting PvP tournament where the top North American and European teams will face off in a best-three-games-out-of-five match with a cash prize pool of $10,000 on the line.

To determine which teams from each territory will qualify for the Guild Wars 2 Invitational Tournament, teams of five players from Europe and North America will compete in regional qualifying tournaments hosted by MMORPG.com and Mist League.

The European regional tournament will be on July 27-28 and the North American regional will take place on August 3-4.

Both regional qualifying tournaments will have a maximum of 32 teams. The format will be five vs. five single elimination matches, and the winners of each match will be determined by the victors of two out of three games. 1) cash prize “pool” is 10k. is this awarded to first place team only or split between 1st 2nd 3rd etc

2) “The format will be five vs. five single elimination matches, and the winners of each match will be determined by the victors of two out of three games.” What does this mean? First you say single elimination and then you say victors of two out of three games. It doesn’t make any sense.

the problem is a large number of whiners and complainers came to vent on the forums after failing hard and getting stomped on the new Skyhammer map

while the good and pro players that are enjoying the new map and Winning are busy fighting so they’re not coming to the forums as much.

Too bad ArenaNet is choosing to listen to the naysayers instead of their own playtesters and the many many people that are having fun with the map.

3 Professions(Necromancer, Ranger, Mesmer) completely lack the ability to Launch someone and the same 3 Professions also have a small amount of abilities availible that can Push someone, combined with these 3 Professions having less or the same amount of stability availible as the remaining 5 professions, they’re simply not of much use on a map where they’ll be knocked down repeatedly with no actual way of countering it. Due to the massive amounts of Launches / Pushes certain Professions such as Engineers and Warriors also have, these 3 professions have little use on this map.

But then again, I’ll just stand by my opinion that a map where you can oneshot another player simply through crowdcontrolling them is awful.

Necros have fear which is very effective at getting people off ledges, they also have a strong knock back with flesh golem. Ranger has a powerful knock back on a low CD with LB and a 2 sec AOE fear with wolf. Mesmers have an AOE pull on low CD with focus and a knock back on GS.

Do please make sure you know all the classes you’re commenting before doing so. Thanks.

I made no remarks regarding the mesmer Focus as I was strictly talking about Pushes and Launches here, if that was unclear then I’m sorry you didn’t understand that but having re-read what I wrote, I find it terribly obvious that I were talking strictly about these 2 effects.

As for Launches, I provide you with the full list of skills containing them so you can see for yourself that just as I said here:

Mesmers have access to 2 – One however is underwater
Necromancers have access to 2 However they’re both acquired from Elite skills

Warriors on the other hand have access to 5 _ 3 above water_
Engineers have access to 5 _ Special conditions apply to some_
Thief again, is actually missing out. Access to one push while drowning.
Guardians have 3 1 during downed
Elementalists have 1.

I am well aware of the fearing capabilities of the necromancer and the plethora of pet-skills, well in this case its basically 3.
Tail lash, Terrifying Howl and Brutal Charge.

But again, I were talking about the 2 types of Knockbacks(Push, Launch), not the other effects.

All that aside tho, the cannon is nothing else than a simplified trebuchet from the battle of kyhlo and calling fall damage for something fresh is nothing short of insulting.

Obviously you haven’t played the map very much because pull skills are just as important and push and launch skills on Skyhammer.

You’re not allowed to limit this discussion to push and launch skills when pull skills (scorpion wire, temporal curtain-into the void, etc.) are being used effectively on this map to kill other players.

So ANet agrees Skyhammer is not a tPvP map.

Respeccing is not completely “free”. It take quite a bit of time if you need to make major changes and hop around the various vendors or PVP storage. Of course templates would solve this problem but they don’t have them yet.

If you’re complaining about Warriors in Skyhammer, you probably don’t know how to play warrior very well because they can do some serious damage in the cannon room.

Hammer/Mace CC warrior is quite strong on this map. You have to remember, this map cares way less about actual stats and way more about skill effects.

You forget the very lower dps of hammer and mace, against 4, 5 or 6 summons hiting, cc, dealing condition, and protecting the foe. All then ready to face the first one that enter in roon.

Necromancers are very vulnerable to crowd control by warriors and guardians.

No, they can’t. Especially not Engies. All an Engineer has to do is, again, hug the door and DPS you down. You can never kill an Engineer in pure melee as a Warrior.

Uh no, warriors can easily escape through the portal before the engineer dps them down. And come back 5 seconds later. Warriors have very good stability and will prevent a lot of the engineer’s crowd control.

So you walk away and allow the cannon holder to take another shot? He will heal up as well, you know.

As for Warriors, it’s the age-old question of “why bring someone that can do one thing well, when another one can do it best?”. Necro and Engie are way superior to Warriors in the cannon room, plus they can still fight well even with their cheesy push builds, unlike a Warrior that has to slot Stomp, Fear Me and equip a Rifle.

Uh no, you go back in before they can fire another shot. Have you used the cannon before? It has a recharge. If you escape through the portal and they try to take another shot while you are coming back in. You set them up for a knockback or push onto a glass plate (or off one of the edges completely).

I think the entrance to the cannon needs to be redesigned. And the wall in the cannon area should be removed.

Instead of having an asura gate to the cannon. We should have (a series of) jumping pads go to the cannon, maybe a type of mini-jumping puzzle.

Right now it’s a little too easy to use the asura gate to retreat in and out of the cannon room even with the debuff delay.

Many players have learned to hug the asura gate to avoid getting knocked off or onto a glass plate. These same players can also retreat easily outside the cannon room and return 5 seconds later to re-engage whoever they were fighting with. The portal makes it very hard to catch someone and finish them off unless you have people watching both sides of the portal.

What gear do I need to be using to increase the duration of my fear mes to 4s? Mine always seem to last 2s even when I try to make them longer.

Would like tips on maximizing fear duration on necros too, but if no one here knows I’ll ask on necro forums.

So, what everyone wants:

A plain open field with 3 nodes. Nothing else otherwise you get small nodes/positioning advantages, etc.

Nothing but damage skills. Otherwise you get knockbacks and thats cheesy. You get all sorts of CC but thats cheesy.

But actually no, everyone hates conquest, don’t we? And we all want ‘actual’ pvp. Player versus player. So we want deathmatch, I assume.

5 v 5 with only damage skills on a flat playing field.

Ye, sounds fun…

Secondary mechanics are good. But controlling the secondary mechanics shouldn’t be a game-breaking thing. You shouldn’t HAVE to cap the cannon to have a decent chance of winning skyhammer. Forest and Khylo do this well: they have secondary mechanics that can be important but they won’t DECIDE the match and they can be COUNTERED and effectively removed from play. That can’t happen on skyhammer

CC’s are good. They’re vitally important to team and solo fights, and skillfully used CC is a great tactic. The problem with skyhammer is that CC doesn’t help you gain an advantage over enemies through skillful and timely usage: CC gives you an instant kill. This makes everyone bring TONS of CC at the cost of damage, and the counters to CC aren’t nearly as available as the CC itself is. People are able to bring so much CC they can spam it without attempting to time things well and it will be extremely effective because you only need to land one lucky hit to get a ONE SHOT KILL.

Those are the problems with skyhammer. It’s a fun map and i enjoy goofing around with it on custom servers. But it doesn’t deserve a place in competitive rotations

Secondary mechanics are there for a reason. On some maps using them offers a slight advantage (Nifhel). Battle of Kyhlo and Foefire give you even bigger advantages. And similarly Skyhammer’s cannon is a big advantage. There’s nothing game-breaking about controlling the cannon room and you don’t need to divert your entire team to controlling it. Normally 1 is enough with 1 or 2 as backup. Other 2 players should still be capping points. But someone should be rotating into the cannon room immediately if the main guy holding it goes down.

I love this map, reminds me of the old FPS games. I don’t have to change my build at all unless I’m planning on holding control of the cannon, in which case Fear builds with stability on DS activation come in handy, but not as much as some of the other class’s options. The cannon isn’t a big deal, just run off the point and run back. Haven’t had any trouble with it. I like the dynamic they added with the launch pads, probably based on the positive feedback from the Dragon Ball mini-game.

Also the cannon to me seems like a novelty at this point because everyone wants to play with it so you can 3 cap extremely easily because most players are hanging around the cannon room. I feel like mesmers and guardians are going to be the strongest defenders.

Yeah exactly, the cannon is pretty powerful and it gives the teams holding it a pretty good advantage. But players with high mobility builds can neutralize that advantage.

ok so we’re missing Warrior and Ranger and they’re pretty good at melee combat if you just hug the portal all the time you can kill people there.

If players are hugging the portal then they’re not using the cannon so basically you’re disabling the cannon for as long as possible until you win the fight in the cannon room. There’s nothing broken about this.

You can either fight at the door, wait for backup, or just pray the rest of your team is capping points while you’re disabling the cannon.

If I was to name a profession that wouldn’t be good at this map I’d say elementalist, they have knockdowns instead of knockbacks. Only lightning 5 comes to mind for a knockback and that’s just single target, while Mesmer has 2 ae knockbacks/pulls. I’d assume big ol bomb is pretty effective if it lands but its so easy to dodge.

Elementalists also have Tornado conjure earth shield and conjure lightning hammer. And Staff 3 Air Attunement Gust

I mean, I don’t think many people are doubting how well others are doing on the map. But it’s heavily favored on certain classes, just like spirit watch or capricorn. I mean, what’s the point of competitive play if you have to adjust your build + comp for certain maps. This shouldn’t be an RTS but more of an action game where it comes down to actual fight to the death skill not gimmicky 1-hit ko mechanics or having to rely on secondary objectives to win. You don’t even need to fight, you just need to be sneaky enough to land a cc.

O please, I didn’t have to adjust my build at all for this map. I’ve been using the same build I’ve been using for the other tournament maps and it works great.

That being said, if your build doesn’t work for this map then it probably wasn’t that great of a build to begin with or it wasn’t flexible enough for various PVP scenarios. Sounds like a lot of stubborn players that are were too comfortable with their old builds and don’t want to change it up to in order to win on this map.

You bring different skills for different situations. My build was already CC-heavy so it works fairly well on Skyhammer. For the WvW Jumping puzzle, you’d adjust your skills there as well and you don’t bring the same skills you would for open field combat. The amount of whine in this forum recently is so similar to all those complaints about players getting killed in the jumping puzzle.

You got knocked off a cliff? Well, guess what, you’re in a PVP zone. Learn to deal with it.

They should get their build templates working soon now.
It’s obvious you can’t just play with the same skills in this map as in others.
You’ll be needing some more stability and cc.

Tpvp has the same map for a few days so i could just change it all for just those few days.

But for the spvp map rotation you can’t just easily change your build between the matches.

Uh no. I used the same build I’ve used for Foefire, Khylo, and Forest in Skyhammer and it works just fine.

I believe this was intentional. You are supposed to die if you drop down a hole and if you try to cheat death (looking at you silly necros) you get to see some pretty wurms instead.

Don’t worry, you can still rejoin your team just let the wurms kill you.

Edit: BTW, this affects all classes not just necros.

I agree with OP so much. I think they need to tone down the burst on some classes too. Short battles that last 30 seconds aren’t very fun.

Says who? 30 seconds is more than enough time to down and stomp someone. And many people would consider that too long.

Most PVE players don’t do sPvP because they’re scared of dying and getting stomped. They don’t have the zerg to back them up as in WvW and they’re not fighting trash mobs as in PVE.

Necromancers: Damage and condition coverage will likely be nerfed. Survivability will be buffed through life force generation on weapons. Next patch, Sigil of Paralyzation will no longer affect fear.

Aww. I was hoping they would keep the damage and nerf the survivability instead.

I checked the leaderboards just now and my ranking is a few percentage points above what it was 12 hours ago. A few of my guildies have gone up in ranking as well.
