It would have to be re-coded in all the parts that utilize CPU extensions among other things. That alone could take more than 3 months. Then, you have to playtest, that would take about 2 months as well, then you have to re-code if any bugs occurred. Would take the same amount of time as the initial recode usually.
Regardless, it would take a year or more to do alone. After they optimize it and whatnot, they should really think about enhancing the textures to be more vectorized. Why? You think that would take more power? No. It’d take less. Because vectoring would be completely up to the CPU and GPU (Wait, what?) But think about it. There would be no texture files with insane file sizes. This would take up far less RAM (just a few megs), and allow the computer to load in more players / etc. (Oh, I see.)
That said, Vectors are just text files anyway that are fancy. Take XHTML and how it can make SVGs.
Oh, the HUD/GUI is one of the most demanding pieces in Guild Wars 2 by the way. They should take a lesson from valve on how to dynamically generate a HUD/GUI. Since the HUD/GUI is mostly 2D, vectors would be the easiest to use there. Vectors also scale, so even if you have let’s say, 5000×5000 4:3 screen, there would be no noticeable aliasing due to how vectors work. But wait, doesn’t that mean we wouldn’t have to have anti-aliasing on? Sort of, and sort of not. You could have it on say, 2x, and it would work well. it all depends on how your monitor works.
Furthermore, porting the game to 64-bit would ease a ton of issues with the game. However, people with 32-bit OSes would suffer from that. (Even though you can tell the 64-bit code to interface with a 32-bit bypass of sorts. Since 64-bit is backwards compatible with 32-bit, unless it’s IA64.)
(edited by Iyeru.5240)
The program has to be PAE compatible, and your Windows to be PAE compatible. It needs more than 2 GB of RAM space for itself alone. So like above, upgrade to 64-bit with more RAM, and you’ll be fine.
I have an AMD GPU, so not only will this not work properly, I still have LOD flickering in this game, even if I turn off in-game AA and turn off edge-detect (Edge detect and in-game AA is the problem when it comes to mesh/texture flickering. TERA has the same problem, but it can be resolved by disallowing the game to do its own AA features.)
please, don’t post that completely false nonsense about the eye only seeing 24fps.
eyes don’t have a shutter or a frame rate, and below 40fps is simply not visibly smooth in most games.
This man speaks truth. Eyes can tell the difference all the way up to 600 Hz on Plasma, and farther still.
I can vouch for Mushkin. I have these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226184 (Four sticks total)
And the lower stock voltage means it runs slightly cooler, yet still can get 1600 MHz at 1.35 volts.
(edited by Iyeru.5240)
On the store I ordered the 3570k, the difference between 3570k and the regular 3570 was 204 eur vs 212eur so I thought, might as well go for the 3570k
You’ll still need to overclock it to 4.5 GHz.
Your i5 is a first-gen core-i series:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115215
The best i5 for GW2 is this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504
You’d need a new motherboard though, as it requires 1155, not 1156. GW2 is still horribly unoptimized, and requires a good single-thread performing CPU, rather than dumping it on more threads, or GPU. If you want to compare GW2 to TERA, you’d have to remember that TERA uses Unreal, not GW1’s Engine (GW2 = GW1 Heavily Modified.)
Btw, the Pack Bull event in the human area of queensdale is literally broken. If the bull is in the fortress thing on the river, it will never move.
Well, just attempted an overclock to 4.0 GHz with 1.5v at 200 MHz x 20:
Results are on the Kaineng Server/World…
http://i.snag.gy/Tr88L.jpg (max temp seen was actually 37 C after loading heavy areas)
With these settings in wayfarer’s foothills:
And in Lion’s Arch: (Avg, 8~40 fps, depending on where you’re walking)
And in the Bandit cave in queensdale:
http://i.snag.gy/9lQ2l.jpg (Often below 14 fps, even though I said the patch helped, it only did for a little while.)
As a note, this overclocking causes areas to load slower after I enter them. For instance, graphics load really fast, but NPCs and Sound don’t, they take much longer than normal.
erm, no, the 680 was definitely released before the 690, since the 690 is 2 underclocked 670 gpu’s….
So… if it’s two underclocked 670s, wouldn’t it have come before the 680 then? Didn’t the 670 come before the 680?
c
If you are planning on getting a 690, there’s only really one to choose:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130781
This one was recently released a few months back, and is currently the only 690 still being produced due to the card actually not performing as well as it should. Reason why this one was released later, was because EVGA figured out how to cool the kitten thing properly with just one fan. (Since no other company made a 690 with more than one fan.) This way, the card can perform better than the previous ones that were released. The GTX 680 actually released after the 690 iirc, and this one by EVGA released after that, quite a bit later actually.
But like above, you’re better off only getting it if you plan to get more than one. (Keep in mind, you’d need one hell of a PSU to do more than one, they take a chunk out.)
You can always go for professional versions of NVIDIA too (Quadro) but their specs are labeled differently than consumer cards.
Also, never EVER buy from PNY.

Thanks guys. I’ll go guardian, mainly for farming purposes for the time being. Once I get her to max or I feel confident enough, I’ll try out the others.
Thank heavens the game has no durability system besides the whole dying thing. Or else I’d probably drop it, and use it as a time-waster.
I’m fine if I get a warning or something beforehand, like a circle AOE or something similar. But as an elementalist, even some general pve mobs will own you even if I dodge correctly (IE: Boars that just keep on running at you, skelks that just keep running right after a melee attack, etc.) Dodging is fun, but only if I can do it right. Seeing as most mobs have a VERY short melee animations, the moment I dodge, they start running at me, making me dodge again. Staff builds (Since I don’t like DPS, I prefer Burst DPS, where one hit = massive damage, rather than over time) often gets canceled by dodging, as Staff non-AOE spells require a direction, unlike wand.
If you face away from your enemy too long, the magic spell will stop auto-attacking, often, this “long” period is the two dodges I often get in immediately when a mob comes close (yeah, I use up pretty much all my energy as soon as they’re close, no joke. Seeing as I explained above the very small animation time, etc.)
Seeing as I’ve played this game a bunch, to know that in newbie areas on the servers I want to join have barely any people willing to help you if you’re stranded in the middle of no where, or came too late to get a party for a skill point boss challenge… I’d sooner go solo than rely on the community.
Unfortunately, I’ll never be good at dodging, trust me. I’ve practiced it enough as a scout on TF2, and on PSO2 to know I’ll never be good at it.
As in, I can’t dodge worth jack. I normally know how to keep aggressiveness on me in non-action MMOs, so being a tank here would be useless for the most part unless I knew what skills as a tank steal aggro from others. (So tank’s out the door mainly.)
I’ve been playing elementalist just up to the end of the starting areas for each race, and I’m no good at it really, unless I always party, every second of the game with someone, which, is out of the question, since I have sporadic playing sessions, and never have a schedule.
So I ask, what is a good class for someone who isn’t good at timing things, and can solo, moderately, well.
Just note..no laptop out can keep fps from dropping below 30 in places like LA and WvW.
Unless you get a laptop with the Intel Core i7-3920XM.
The last patch actually helped my FPS a bit, especially in the bandit caves of queens dale. o.o I even have a worse processor than you do =/
(edited by Iyeru.5240)
Change NVIDIA Optimus to force the Intel Graphics off.
The processor will barely run the game: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Core-i7-740QM-Notebook-Processor.31146.0.html
And single-thread chart doesn’t even have it listed.
From what i know of it ..that requirs a patch/hack for Windows ..at which point if ur going to go that far u might aswell ‘aquire’ wink wink Windows 7 64bit :P
PAE has been built into Windows 32-Bit since Windows 98SE. Linux, even longer.
That said, AION gives Out of Memory when I install it via the NCSoft launcher on 64-bit Windows 8 with 16 GB of RAM.
(edited by Iyeru.5240)
If u have 4gb of physical RAm and a 32bit OS then u will only ever have access to about 3.XXGb ram ..that shared with all other processes doenst leave much for GW2. You could try turning of all other non critical processes to free up used ram so GW2 can have a biigger share ..but my main advice would be to ‘aquire’ a 64bit OS.
If the motherboard and CPU are PAE Enabled, a 32-Bit OS can take up over 4 GB of RAM: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension
That bandit cave has bad fps for everyone. Devs need to optimize it.
The FPS in the bandit caves is due to the GUI/HUD not being optimized.
Well that sucks, thanks for the help guys. I’ll keep looking and get back to you.
The only places you’d find a laptop with an Intel Core i7-3920XM are custom online places like dell’s alienware configurator, cyberpower, sager, ibuypower, originpc and any of the manufacturer websites that allow customizations. Newegg USED to have one, but it’s discontinued:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834310461 (You can still get this on lenovo’s website.)
Lenovo’s is probably going to be the cheapest of the bunch even though it has a Professional-Grade NVIDIA GPU in it.
(edited by Iyeru.5240)
According to this: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html
the laptop scores a pitiful 968 (AMD A6-4400M) on single-thread operations. Guild Wars 2 is not optimized for multi-core or GPU usage.
You need something with at least a score of 2000 on the Single-Thread chart to participate in Wv3 decently.
You might have to take ownership of the .exe or the entire game folder in order to do it.
How is this done?
To take ownership, use this:
Sometimes, when enemies die, Arc Lightning stays active the entire time even when the enemy’s body despawns, this causes (on your screen) the animation to play as you continue to get farther away from the body. This is remedied by casting the spell again and waiting for it to be done, but this shouldn’t happen in the first place.
I found out why the bandit caves for queensdale lag so terribly much. It’s the HUD/GUI. While using the “Point of interest” movie cinematic in the cave, the movie runs at 60 fps as if there was no problem at all. With the HUD/GUI on, the caves run around 5~15 fps.
When exiting the cave or looking away from the cave’s deepest parts, the fps gets instantly better.
While looking down at certain areas, I can easily acheive higher than 60 fps (if vsync is off.) This actually said 61 when I took it, but went to 59 when the screenshot was taken:
here are the options used:
(edited by Iyeru.5240)
Out of all Intel’s Mobile processors. The only one that would do well on Wv3 would be the i7-3920XM:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-3920XM+%40+2.90GHz&id=901
It scores over the 2000 mark: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html
However, choosing an nvidia GPU like the 670M or the 680M will set you back to the 500 series in terms of desktop power. AMD rules the mobile market in terms of GPU as such.
Seems to only be using one of my cores at 50-70%
all the rest are 5-20%
If this is true how do i enable more cores being used?I disabled core parking on my i7 yesterday, does AMD have that too?
No. It will try to force spread out a process that takes more usage across all cores on AMD.
Well, I just updated my graphics card driver, and now have 25-30 fps on medium. That’s good enough for me. :-)
A lot of people want 60 though, like me.
Something special must be happening for me. I just lowered my graphics a little bit more and I’m still seeing CPU usage push 95%. This is with a quad core running over 4GHz. That CAN’T be right. I even set the priority for GW2 to high and there is no improvement in FPS.
If it’s not a 3770k, then that’s the reason.
The only intel mobile processor that’s good at playing GW2 (In fact, out of ALL the mobile processors) is the Intel Core i7-3920XM.
Borderlands / 2 don’t use the same engine as GW/2.
The only Mobile series processor that would do well is an Intel Core i7-3920XM anything cheaper is asking for trouble.
Targeting occurs automatically based on what you look at / is currently closest to you where your character is facing.
The FX 8350 would do , but u wont be able to get a constant 30+fps everywhere ..like LA and especialy WvW ..even if u OC.
You really should consider Intel, they have much stronger single thread processing power atm, and the 3570k isn’t really all THAT expensive all things considered.
We also have a discussion here https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Anet/first#post1114560.
I think the answer is that the Guild Wars 2 game engine is the problem. Seriously, don’t blame the CPU when optimization is the job of the developers – especially if Guild Wars 2 is only the exception to the general rule.
Link is not accessible.
I’m not big on OC’ing, so I’d have to have a professional do that. I’ve blue screened and crashed so many times when attempting to OC, that I will never do it myself.
So this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131854
and this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116502
or this motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293
would be best for GW2? I have a Thermaltake Frio (hopefully I have my Intel brackets still >_>)
The FX 8350 would do , but u wont be able to get a constant 30+fps everywhere ..like LA and especialy WvW ..even if u OC.
You really should consider Intel, they have much stronger single thread processing power atm, and the 3570k isn’t really all THAT expensive all things considered.
I bought that 7950 just in December (to replace my old PNY GTX 470), so I’m not making a major change to my motherboard or Processor anytime soon. Besides, Intel changes their motherboard style each new processor line, it’s a bit annoying to say the least. I have a HAF-X, and I know some motherboard types won’t work in it unless you put the backplating for the CPU cooler and install the CPU cooler in first before putting the motherboard in the HAF-X. (Only Intel motherboards have the problem, no AMD motherboard does.)
(edited by Iyeru.5240)
Anyway the answere to ur original question is that ur CPU does not have strong enough Single thread performance.
I’m not changing to intel anytime soon, so I guess I should get that top-end FX series then. Or just wait until mid-next year see if AMD comes out with even better AM3+ CPUs.
I have Tera myself ..it does run smoother. .till u get into a RIFT event with 50+ players + 50+ monsters around.
That’s to be expected of all MMORPGs though. You’d need a dual-CPU Motherboard to even get that good. (this plus x2 this)
Even a 1100T is bottlenecked, jumps from 15 to 30 (sometimes even 50 if the camera isn’t being moved) This is on stock though, 3.3 GHz.
Tera used Unreal Engine. GW2 uses Modified GW1 engine.
it is highly unlikely a optimization will ever come that wil lincrease performance enough to match other well optimzed MMO’s.
So i wouldnt hold ur breath. This is GW2 and this is how it performs. just like all new games that come out ..some requir beafier rigs than others. You want to play it u need the rig.
You do realize that TERA came out only a few months before GW2 right? So shouldn’t TERA be just as bad due to that logic?
Yeah, I do too, and the grid actually goes onto the NPCs as well sometimes. I have an AMD Radeon HD 7950 with Beta 12.11 (Since it fixes dx9 image corruption) Drivers.
GW2 isn’t TERA, they use different engines and every game is different.
Then I hope they optimize it soon =/
Then how is it that TERA runs perfect? :V
You have enough ram or pagefile setup?
This, definitely. The game takes over 1.6 GB of memory (RAM) alone.
dxdiag: http://pastebin.com/netUzypV
(Ignore TERA Not Responding. It’s an issue where it doesn’t have focus. Alt+Tabbing back in fixes the problem instantly.)
On TERA, I get perfect fps and panning, smooth, no stutters and no dropped FPS. GW2 has fps drops while panning, even when no one is on screen besides me.
On Tribes: Ascend the game has unplayable FPS on all settings (0~5 fps)
On Ragnarok Online 2 when 30~50+ users are on-screen at once with max settings (shadows off = no problems) camera panning has problems too.
Skyrim has no problems whatsoever (FPS exceeds 60 even with sharpshooter’s old ENB) save for minor shadow issues while using FXAA (fixed with AA forcing and a dll patch in the skyrim directory.)
Here are temps while running TERA while panning slowly and fast:
