Game Updates: Traits

I think that the trait system is more fine than god-awful as people make it out to be.

It is annoying for power-levelers but it is fun for those that play the game.

One thing that I feel ANet needs to add in is a Quest text or a notification whenever you are high enough level to find a trait. Most traits are level-based anyways.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Trait_guide#Trait_unlock_methods_sorted_by_level_range

I disagree as the trait system makes no sense: I may be able to get traits at level 18 but I’m not able to see them – so what’s the point? Upleveling makes no sense anymore as a lot of the traits are either only availlable at a rather high level – or people can’t see or use them anyway. A lot of really important traits are locked behind a high level, I’ve mentioned condi removal on my mesmer, f.e. People are being forced to play the game in a certain way, my wvw characters won’t make pve dungeon pugs happy, so I have to either get a second gear for them or buy the traits or live with being criticised for my “builds”. People who don’t like wvw will have a really hard time to get the wvw related traits. There’s no real indicator as how to obtain the traits, just a vague direction, that collides with the NPE.
It might be okay if one is a pure PvE player (except the wvw traits) but a lot of people aren’t.
And hey, I know all of this, a lot of people don’t so they will be surprised when facing all these troubles.

Understood. Suggestions that have been made are good; they don’t need to be repeated. It’s a huge thread, but it’s extra meaty and it’s been and will be read.

And the devs have made it clear that there’s no chance that these concerns will be forgotten. Absolutely no chance of that at all.

Please do me a favour and tell somebody to either fix the “Branded Devourer Queen” event chain or to chose another task for that trait as it’s bugged and has been at least since April now. I’ve actually unlocked all but 3 traits and 2 of them are map completion, so this one will be the only trait I will be missing. So it is possible to unlock “all” traits but the effort is just too much – I’ve been on it quite a while – the problems occurring are plenty and someone who isn’t used to this game might despair. I was lucky that “Story Dungeon Completer” is a daylie today so I have been able to get 3 traits – as one example – I knew that my chances getting a story group were good today, small details I wouldn’t have noticed as a new player.

And I’m not so sure I want to repeat all of this for my other two characters who have been created after April 15th – and I’m not so sure I want to create the last class I’m missing. Yes, I like having all traits, I’m that weird.

NinjaEd.3946 – I would have to agree with Jana.6831. I hardly see thieves use auto attack often, sadly I see more people abuse CnD because of the insane damage it does over and over, and wait until they can get them low enough to burst them down with a final backstab. Poison is really a game changer for most classes and can cancel out their entire build, people just need to learn to auto attack more for the poison on 3rd chain.

I know of the poison on auto attack, but as dancing dagger stands now it is entirely not worth the effort. POison is just a thought to help out s/d and p/d whom do not have poison, but its just a shot in the dark towards an entirely different discussion. If you wana add dancing dagger to this discussion I’d be happy to pitch in but right now its just in the crossfire of my problems with d/d (skills being un-used).

(Only reason I say poison is because some npc mobs have dancing dagger which do not bounce but instead apply poison. So not even my idea really lol).

It’s unlikely to get the same skill twice on the same weaponset and ask yourself where you can use 33% less healing better; on a melee skill that doesn’t cost initative or on a wonky skill that costs 4 initative.
P/D is the least set which needs help and S/D is mainly played without dagger, that’s just for the mobility or to cripple or stomp enemies.

I think you twisted the meaning of his words: There’s no way anyone knows which traits one is going to use and for most people it also isn’t clear who their main character will be. So saying that one has only to buy 15 traits is nonsense, even if not all will be used – but there’s no way to determine which ones that will be.

I challenge you to find any significant percentage of players that have EVER enabled more than 30 Traits on a character for any type of serious excursion into actual game-play…..that is LESS than half the available 65. I’d be willing to guess that 80% of players have never used more than 20 Traits on a single character.

Granted, this system inhibits testing and discourages “completionist” pursuits while being less than helpful to an entirely new player (that has NO idea what “good” and “bad” Traits might be), so I personally think it needs some drastic “tweaking” from it’s current state.

Alright, then let me see, my main is a thief. He used (oh my) Blinding powder, Hard to catch, Vigorous recovery, Fleet of foot, Pain response is now using Fleet shadow. In that line. Ok, next line: Slowed pulse, Hidden thief, Shadows embrace, Cloaked in shadow and Shadow’s rejuvenation. Next line: Side Strikes, Practiced Tolerance, Hidden Killer, Executioner and Signet of power. Next line: Has used mug, in the condi setup he still uses it. Has used Panic strike and revealed Training. Other traits being used having been used: Uncatchable, Long reach, Ricochet, Sleight of hand.

Any more questions? ; )
(Why shouldn’t everybody have access to all traits just because you think that no one ever uses more than 20 – I used more than that as you can see – and I’m not lying, I really tried all of them out or am still using them, depending on what weapons I use)

Step 1 : Read.
Step 2 : I like it. Yes or no?
Step 3 : If yes, GO GET ’EM! If no, next…

Simple enough to me.

In general everyone knows what build they are looking for, even if its just a basic concept, by reading the trait and skills that you are comfortable with, you can form an idea if the trait fits with your concept and preference BEFORE going out to get it.

Did that on my engi, only to find that the trait was bugged.
No, people usually don’t know or even if they know the tendencies but not exactly what traits might be best for that as that knowledge is only achieved by tryying it out, just like skills, I try them out, even if I have read what they’re doing before. And I try others who I didn’t like by reading their descriptions after I’ve watched some other people using them – and that’s kind of how it should be “play as you like” and not “play if you’re not restricted”. No offense, I guess I get your point of view, but new players can’t know all the stuff veterans know including what might be good and people playing the competitive sides of the game need different builds from time to time.

I’m guessing because the new account won’t have access to the gold/skill points and any benefits that previously levelled characters can provide

I’m guessing it’s because he/she doesn’t know that every character created after april 15th faces this.

Hahaha, your rage and contempt of others is entertaining.

The only time I raged was when I dced after I had downed 3 enemies who were about to cap a tower. I think I said “KITTEN” quite a lot of times and that was it – I’m not a raging person, sorry.

Think I need to buy a new account just to put this in perspective again, but I am pretty sure that it REALLY is not that bad, and just like every other change that people find even the slightest bit inconvenient are just raging for the sake of raging and because they can not rush through their alts anymore.

Why buy a new account? Just create a new character and try it.

How is it so unobtainable when you can just buy it if you are just purely unlucky or unskilled enough to do the requirement?
Difficulty in content is NOT a bad thing.

Because the idea behind it was to either earn them or to pay for them – a lot of people have troubles earning them for above reasons – and that shouldn’t be. Also one event seems to be bugged (Defeat the devourer Queen). I have got 55 traits on my newest character unlocked without buying a single one but I wouldn’t have made it without extern websites and without enough random people who were around – someone new to this game will have real troubles to try to earn the traits so I guess they won’t bother and if they don’t they won’t enjoy the “endgames” like pvp, wvw, dungeons, fractals and even the halloween event. Anyway builds change and I for one am not a real fan of cookie cutter builds, they may be helpful at the start but I’m usually using a slightly different build, so “just buy the ones you need” doesn’t really make sense.

I admit I didn’t get the sarcasm in the OP.
Anyway, I found the labyrinth really hard last year and completely easy this year. After doing it for a while I went back to cap a camp in wvw and wondered if anet has stealth buffed the npcs – I guess they haven’t.
Anyway, since I can also give some good advise : You mean the “flat on the back” of the candy corn champ? That’s easy to avoid: To be invulnerable against his flying candy corn you have to stand in the glittering candy stuff, from that you get stacks (you can see them) if you have 9 stacks and don’t move immediately out of the ooze, you will have a sugar rush and are immobilzed. So what I do is to wait until about 7 stacks, move out of it, move back or not, and am fine as I’m invulnerable to flying stuff as long as I have the initial stack and also fine as long as I don’t have 9+ stacks of sugar. But even then I’m invulnerable, it’s worse to not have been in the ooze at all.

Put it this way: does anyone have fun fighting against SA thieves? Does it make interesting, engaging fights? I’m pretty sure the answer is no.

Depends on how much they abuse stealth. D/D for instance is fun to fight with and against, but most d/p players just hide for days and don’t engauge after they fail miserably to down you time after time.

Then what about warriors who just run away, reset, come back and do that for eternity?

The point of this thread is how SA reward you for sit in stealth doing nothing , the reward come from the heal , the heal come from Shadow rejuv … The ability of reset the fight as thief don’t come from stealth itself but from this famous trait in SA .
I know SA is mainly for the " hidden thief playstyle " , but the regen is simply too kitten strong .

Well, I was asking other players who I know are wvw thieves and who said it was too strong, sorry that I didn’t respond to the OP with this who wanted to get rid of the complete traitline yet only seems to speak about pvp.
I can’t sit in stealth, sorry, only time I’m really able to do that is when in shadow refuge which is visible to everybody and which doesn’t make me invincible.

No, it’s not irrelevant as what you guys want is a thief nerf so other thieves have it easier to kill other thieves – there are a lot of other classes out there who have a lot of utilities against thieves and who have also passive regeneration, passive condi removal and so on. So to me it would make more sense to say “buff xy” right now, but then again I don’t really have an overview about other classes traits and skills and general abilities. If you use S/D you have condi removal on your weaponset which is likely easier to obtain than stealthing for a D/D thief.

Edit (I should stop the editing, nonetheless): You didn’t really get my point, the point is that the healing depends on how much initative you spend over time and how easy it is for you to get initative thus more healing – it would be a different playstyle like mine right now but I can well imagine that people can generate as much healing with this traitline.

moi: the problem I have is that there are no arguments as to why it is too strong and that’s what I would like to know – you’re not making a point by comparing it either to other thieves traits (compare it to some other classes traits maybe) or by saying “it’s too strong”. I just want to understand you guys.

Edit: assassins rewards heals for 88 per point initative spend, CnD uses up 6 initative, that’ll be 528 healing, rethink your statement?
Anyway, yes, I would like to play like I’m used to and the solo roaming I’m doing is because my build hasn’t gotten any further nerfs lately. Had to give up my former build in April and I really wasn’t happy about it.

Edit²: It’s 86 and therefore 516 heal for one CnD.
If talking about whether this is worse than SA one also has to have a look at how much initative is spend, how fast initative recovers and what traits are in that traitline in general, like pain response or quick recovery. Then you have infiltrator’s signet and maybe some other aspects I don’t know of. So the whole thing is a bit more complicated than just saying “it’s too strong, anet nerf”.

It’s just because the healing power of it is too strong for the amount of stealth you can access with Shadow Arts. I suggest it be around 280 per second.

So who has got a disadvantage because of it? Other classes or other thieves who haven’t invested in SA?
When I fight I’m usually stealthed for 1-3 seconds (D/D), if I use shadow refuge it’s mostly to run away or to get rid of the condi spam which of course doesn’t stop while I’m in shadow refuge. It must have a disadvantage for you guys to even suggest your own class to be nerfed.

Thanks, I’ve had this so many times the past weeks, I kind of expect it when I’m in an open world megaserver pug but when I’m already soloing a camp and the veteran is the last one standing at 5% health and I try to backstab him, a ranger runs in and knooockbacks – and that camp after camp until I waypoint as they have the habit to follow me. Same happens with necros and mesmers. I don’t complain if I come into a camp while somebody else is already soloing it but I sure won’t “follow” them.
Sorry but had to get that off my chest. And yeah it’s annoying in these big zergs as well but I would’ve thought that a wvw regular would know better. So maybe there should be a knockback tutorial for everybody.

The NPE and new trait system both have made things more confusing. None of it makes sense and nothing has shown that it was worth doing. If it really made a difference they would have been spouting off about how much better the change made things for retention after the free weekend by now.

I just kind of wanted to (again) point out that the trait system is a mess – that was nothing against your post =)

I actually think that the NPE is a good thing for new players but delaying and hiding traits isn’t. I know that I didn’t really care about traits although they have been availlable to me back then, but I accidently chose the then meta build for power rangers 1 month after I started this game and 2 weeks after I hit 80 – so even new players can make something useful out of traits.

I’d bet money that they really wanted to level gate the entire wvw and pvp but they either couldn’t figure out how to or no one ever thought about the portals and hotkeys. Its 1/2 assed crap but they aren’t fixing it to be what I think they originally intended because it gives the white knights away to defend stuff. By making it sound like every complaint is really just misinformation. Which is why they won’t come out and say what is working as intended and what is not. They won’t say because they don’t know what they can spin one way or the other.

No serious wvw player levels their alt in wvw because of the traits. Had my mesmer as an example early in this thread: I had to do 100% map completion of herathi hinterlands to be able to remove conditions when healing. So even if they would hide it it wouldn’t make a difference, except for EotM which is doable without traits.
In the end what destroys their NPE is the traits as that will likely be the most confusing part for new players as one starts with none and they are hidden behind mechanics one only understands when knowing a website which explains it. So there’s no idicator as to how useful these traits are (and if they’re needed) and how to obtain them.

I really loved the concept of not having to talk to the quest giver, not having to return, not having items in your inventory you have to carry around, well HAHA: Talk to the quest giver first to get weapon x, collect some trophies and bring them to the quest giver, return after the quest to see if he has got any collectibles – so much for that.

D/D vs. D/P vs. P/D

in Thief

Posted by: Jana.6831

Jana.6831

Once upon a time I read something someone wrote in a thread or somewhere it was: I chose my build depending on what I want my purpose to be.
So roaming isn’t = roaming – I roam alone to cap camps and to scout. For that I chose D/D and SB because D/D is faster than D/P and the SB is nice for spanking trashmobs. I did the same with my condi thief although she has P/D and SB – but yet again the same purpose.
If I were to run with a group most of the time, I would chose utilities for group fights. If I wanted to 1vX most of the time, I would chose D/D D/P probably, or stick with D/D SB and learn SB some more, chose different sigils and skills.
So in the end the descision is up to you and theorycrafting what build is best is kind of nonsense as it depends on the player.

When I have my wvw stacks and full bloodlust my backstabs can go a lot higher than 10k, depending on who I hit (Edit: And how long I’ve been in stealth beforehand) and it isn’t only uplevels who get hit the hardest. When I was on my condi thief I lost about 5% of my fights and that was against condi builds (was an even worse noob back then). Not a huge fan of condi, so I don’t really know what potential other classes have so I can’t say whether or not it’s just condi thief who is OP or conditions in general or runes of perplexity (which I don’t use, btw).

Yes, I get that this is the best method for you, sorry if it sounded as if I didn’t acknowledge that you were talking about your personal preferences. I disagreed with that at level 80 getting traits is trivial and my personal preference would be doing the story while leveling up for above reasons.

I actually leveled my necro almost purely in pve and it worked without traits, didn’t take me any longer than with my other newer characters who were mostly leveled in EotM, but then again I did the story and it never takes me long to get a character to 80 anyway. My necro had been leveled under NPE which was pretty helpful to me as the free gear helped a lot as I didn’t need to do EotM to get gear for my level.

If one isn’t into wvw, EotM, dungeons (for various reasons, like wrong gear, wrong class, no guild) and personal story it’s about 20 traits one misses out on, no matter the level.

So far, I’ve only found one way that makes the new Trait system … somewhat bearable.

> Speed level to 80 using EOTM, which saves up enough badges and gold for an exotic armour set; weapons can be gotten with excess gold.
> Systematically unlock traits based on their location.

At level 80, unlocking traits would be trivial (for the most part). Some of them will still take time, but at least it won’t be difficult when properly geared. The problem is, at level 80, you’ll have no traits unlocked, so you’ll be severely kitten until you start unlocking traits.

No, it isn’t trivial at level 80 and your method has got some flaws: There are 5? traits which are only obtainable by doing personal story quests, that takes time and one also gets a lot of exp, so powerleveling in EotM is a method but not the best method – combining it with personal story might be.
Also as I’ve stated somewhere in this thread: My mesmer for example is pure knights, she has got few traits unlocked and in any way nobody would really want me in their party when doing a dungeon. Same goes for my necro who is full zerker but.. necro. So even at level 80 not trivial, there are a lot of factors which make traithunting difficult – another of them is wvw – I do it all the time, so I don’t mind waiting for the dredge, frogs, ogres or grub, but I can imagine that it’s really exhausting for someone who doesn’t play wvw regularly.

Between making PVP not enter-able until level 22, to siege disablers (WVW BAND-AID), now this! Seriously ANET!? You’re taking what WAS a great game and “fixing” stuff that’s NOT broke. This one has to REALLY take the cake!

Just saying… you can still enter WvW and EotM using portals and the hotkey. I was in EOTM on a level 2 the other day.

That just makes it that much more senseless. Hiding things, that are still there is more likely create confusion, not reduce it if we are really concerned about “new players”.

Skill Point challenges are map hidden and disabled unless another player has already initiated a skill point encounter, then the under-level player can get credit.

Vistas are map hidden but achievable.

Many gather nodes were removed in addition to being map hidden…but entirely usable…

It’s a confusing inconsistent muddled mess that was perfectly fine before ANet changed it!

Is this thread about traits or NPE?
I think the NPE doesn’t really hinder new players only older players who really want to do PvP, the rest is something most people can live with (if they’re willing to admit it) – the trait changes effect all of us.

I have about 45 traits unlocked on my necro, my newest toon. What’s missing for now is map completion, most dungeons except for Arah as I completed my personal story, Branded Devourer Queen as that event seems to be bugged and some traits I haven’t come to yet – might never unlock the Trait for Vexas Lab, which was bugged the last time I tried and well yeah, I don’t really like that “quest”.
Anyway, I wouldn’t have made it without Dulfy and that’s kind of the contrahery what they tried with the NPE – I have to know there is a webside outside of GW2 which explains me how to do stuff in GW2. I found Dulfy 3 or 4 months after I started to play and pretty sure someone on my server linked it – I have never seen Dulfy being linked on my now EU server.
So, it is possible to unlock traits but it takes a while and doesn’t work without knowing how. A vague map direction doesn’t really help.

Boss events: Why "lfg"?

This is flatly wrong. The devs have explicitly stated otherwise since launch.

http://www.incgamers.com/2011/06/interview-designing-guild-wars-2-part-2

The devs can state whatever they want to state. What I stated is how the game currently is. It is a bug, and it needs to be fixed so that it’s in line with what the devs actually have said.

You’re welcome to try the tests I suggested in my post to see for yourself. I, like most players, assumed that I simply wasn’t doing enough DPS to qualify for a champion bag when I occasionally didn’t get one from the Svanir Shaman or similar champions. But the end results didn’t mesh up when I tried actively going for more damage, so I decided to test things out myself, and the post above is what I came up with. I’ve done all those tests I suggest that other people do. If you do them too, rather than posting three year old dev statements, you’ll see that things are currently not working as intended.

I have; I just finished leveling 3 alts in EotM in the last couple months. Plenty of champ kills where I’ve gotten credit without a party and arriving late to the fight with a 40-50 man zerg beating on the champ. As long as I got a few thousand damage in I always got a bag.

I’ve also had plenty of fights on uplevels where I didn’t do enough damage to get credit & loot even though I was there from the beginning of the fight.

How about: You’re both right. The one is PvE, the other “WvW”, I can jump in lords room with the Lord at 20% health and 40 people hitting on him, do some well placed (ahem) heartseekers and get loot but the same doesn’t work at Maw or any other world boss.
Edit: Or maybe it does with some, I just didn’t notice/remember.

GreyWraith came to my help, thanks for that =)

I didn’t read the OP in full, had I I wouldn’t have answered – It’s just that I come from a server which had world boss trains long before megaservers were introduced so it was a150 man zerker zerg each night and not being in a party really meant something.

The chances to get loot when in a group are a lot higher as alone you often won’t make enough damage to count, although anet lowered that.

You see – that’s what I meant by evidence versus anecdote. What you’re saying is that you believe that, when you’re in a group, you get a degree of credit for damage that the rest of the group get. I’m not saying that’s wrong, but I’ve never noticed it myself, and I’ve never yet managed to find anything to say that it’s true, either. Can you link to something that actually confirms that’s how the game works?

I only told what I experienced, someone else stated the facts, should I quote them?

I’m almost never in a group and I often miss out on loot was even worse when I was on my condi engineer before some patch around april, even events wouldn’t count as I just didn’t do enough damage.

What would you do with 1000g ? ? ?

The answer is quite obvious: People who have that kind of gold and spend it do so on a precurser as it’s more than enough for everything else.

Acount wide pack in inventory

That option already exist and its called a Bank. Its account wide

In WvW You can access your personal bank through all guild bankers, including borderland bankers and Guild registrar.

Talk to a guild registrar and selecting first option “I want to access guild bank” and if you want to access your account then in the window on the top left select “Account Vault” instead of inventory, open inventory window with ’’I’’ and you can deposit/withdraw. It work in all borderlands as well as regular areas where a guild registrar can be found

Just put your blue prints in the bank instead

Did you ever try what you just advised?

Edit: Ahh ok – had a hard time finding the guild registrar as when there’s a “bank” it’s always two of them a guild bank and a usual bank.

(Just last week I noticed that all WvW maps were missing a banker. Sometimes banker is there but not when I needed it, of course. Perhaps Anet tried to make a need for the golem banker they promoted.)

The bankers are bought by your teammates. Has got nothing to do with anet.

Each homeland has crafting sites, which double as bank access.

Yes but there are also people playing on opponent borderlands and on Eternal Battlegrounds and sometimes these maps have queues.
I would love a siege bag which all of my characters can share as I forget who’s carrying what, but I guess that isn’t going to happen.

Actually yes, it is 100% true. It means exactly what I said. Never said anything about dodging, the TP, SPvP, etc. I was talking about weapon skills, PS, dumbed down starting zones, profession mechanics, burst leveling, etc. Surely you didn’t think skill points and diving goggles were the only things gated?

Alright, since I’m already here (I should not, really, spending way too much time on the forums ) anyway: A friend of mine once complained that I have to kill EVERYTHING – and yeah, he’s right, I usually kill everything, sometimes not but that’s unusual – it took me ages to get all the weapon skills, so I wonder how you guys miss out on them if you’re surely not killing as many mobs as I do. That’s kind of an honest but rhetorical question – I can’t believe that any veteran is restricted by the level gated weapon skills, sorry.

You realize that I mentioned a lot more than just the weapon skills, right?

And it’s been pointed out a lot that this new system often ends up being even more confusing, since if I level to lvl 5 using just one weapon and decide to try out a different one, I’m now confronted with 5 new skills that I’ve never seen before. How is that any less confusing that the way it was before?

And anyway, that wasn’t even the point. The point was that the OP stated that since the NPE was made for new players, so vets can’t complain about it. I was pointing out that since the NPE in most cases doesn’t differentiate between new characters created by vets and those created by new players, vets have every reason to complain.

There you are:
First: You say players are restricted by the gated weapon skills
I say that the people have all the skills unlocked at the same level they had it before.

You didn’t say anything before so if I got anything wrong then you should’ve explained it better.

Second part: You say nothing about that in my opinion players can’t be restricted as I don’t believe that anyone ever had the weaponskills unlocked before they have now.

So: You didn’t discuss my point but complained that I didn’t pick your other points – you seem to be a very difficult person.

Edit: If you mean that I should’ve discussed whether or not vets are being restricted by the NPE – maybe but I just wanted to point out that the weapon skill gating is no valid point to me.
And since the trait update destroyed a lot of the leveling process back in April, I don’t really care about further restrictions, so unless the trait mess isn’t somehow sorted I would complain about the restrictions coming from that and not about the NPE since that will be gone once you hit 80.
That is all I wanted to say.

I have no idea what Caeds power build is, but condi P/D thieves are pretty mean (have a look at weapon skill #3). I still kill them though – as a power thief.
